"PROJECT OVERVIEW Crossrail, Europe’s largest construction project, will increase London’s transportation capacity by 10% when it opens in 2018. The Crossrail scheme is a combination of surface and underground railway that stretches 118km east-west through central London from Reading, Berkshire and Heathrow airport in the west to Shenfield, Essex and Abbey Wood in the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley in the east. Crossrail will serve 40 stations, ten of which are new, and bring 1.5 million people within 45 minutes commuting distance of London’s key central business districts. 21km of the Crossrail route comprises twin-tunnels beneath the heart of central London. It is the central section of the route, and the challenges that had to be overcome to construct its tunnels under the historic capital that forms the subject of this paper. The route of the Crossrail tunnels can be seen in Figure 1. These tunnels weave their way through the city’s underground landscape, linking eight new underground stations which connect to the existing London Underground network, providing interchanges with nine existing lines as well as the National Rail and Docklands Light Railway networks.Crossrail began construction of enabling works in May 2009 and launched the first of eight tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in May 2012. 42km of major tunneling work was completed in May 2015, and included 11km of sprayed concrete lined tunnels at the five mined stations (Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel) in addition to the bored tunnel sections. The remaining three sub-surface stations at Paddington, Canary Wharf and Woolwich were constructed as large open boxes prior to the TBMs passing through. Crossrail, Ltd. is a special purpose company formed by the project’s joint sponsors, Transport for London and the Department for Transport, to manage design, construction and commissioning of the project. In 2009, Crossrail engaged Bechtel Ltd. as its delivery partner and a joint venture, Transcend (comprised of CH2M, AECOM and the Nichols Group), as its programme partner. The project is being managed by an integrated programme management team which is staffed by Crossrail and its partners. The railway, when opened, will be operated by Rail for London. With tunneling completed in accordance with the project’s master control schedule, the new railway is scheduled to commence dynamic testing in late 2017, with a phased opening of the tunneled sections and stations through Central London in 2018."

To meet increasing demand of coal, underground mining is largely being replaced by the exploitation at deeper horizons and with greater complexities. The exploitation-proposition may be below not-to-be-disturbed surface properties or below water-bodies, posing a constant threat of inundation. Also, the mounting pressures to limit the adverse impacts on the environment bring the extraction-undertaking to face more challenges. An understanding of subsidence-mechanism and a rational quantification of subsidence parameters is a requisite herein. This paper presents such pragmatic quantification, validated at mine-sites in India. In comparison, better productivity, conservation and safety is ensured in this approach.

To reduce concentrate dewatering and drying costs, the Concentrator Division at Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. investigated available filtration technologies. Numerous methods were explored, including: drum, disk, belt, pressure, hyperbaric, and ceramic media filtration. An economic evaluation of the individual filtration technologies indicated the advantages of ceramic media filtration for Morenci concentrates. This paper discusses the technological development culminating in the first full scale application of ceramic media disk filters in North America. Low moisture contents are obtained at high production rates and greatly reduced operating costs.

Vertical magnetic surveys have been made over about 3, 150 miles of the crystalline area of east-central Alabama. A contour map (100-gamma interval) showing regional magnetic anomalies has been prepared (scale 1:250,000) from data points located at quarter-mile intervals on all public roads. Small one- and two-station anomalies were eliminated, leaving only areally extensive anomaly features associated with regional geology. The regional gradient was "filtered" from the basic data and the resulting magnetic configuration compared to the regional geology. Regional lines of vertical magnetic intensity trend northeast and follow the structural framework of the area. Correlations can be made between a large number of geologic and magnetic features. The strongest regional anomalies are associated with the Goat Rock, Bartletts Ferry, Towaliga, and Brevard fault structures. The Inner Piedmont area is characterized by a broad regional high. The magnetic values of the northern Alabama Piedmont grades gently northwestward, disrupted occasionally by elongate highs and lows associated with amphibolites or granites. Scattered throughout the Piedmont are anomalous areas of high magnetic intensity; some are related to magnetic-bearing rocks, and some Indicate possible mineralization. Deep open-pit mines are becoming increasingly common in the highly mineralized arctic and sub-arctic regions. Air inversion is a frequent occurrence in these regions, and is exacerbated by the natural topography of an open-pit mine. Due to such inversions, the air quality in open-pit mines deteriorates very rapidly. Transport of gaseous pollutants under arctic air inversion is complex and involves an interaction between flow, thermal and convective transport systems. This paper discusses the construction and validation of a three-dimensional model that simulate the flow of air and the transport of gaseous contaminants in an arctic open-pit mine and the effect of low influent velocity and large gust velocities on the contaminants profiles in the mine. It was found that while higher velocities may remove contaminants from the pit bottom, they may not remove the contaminants from the pit entirely, necessitating artificial mitigation measures.

Application of microprocessors, programmable logic devices, and other computer-oriented hardware and software on-board large surface mining equipment to optimize availability and productivity, stretch machine life, and protect against catastrophic breakdown has been a goal of heavy-equipment manufacturers for several years. Progress in this direction has not been as rapid as many manufacturers anticipated in the mid-1980s, and, on the other side of the coin, mining industry and machine operator acceptance of such products has not always been enthusiastic. However, the trend toward such development seems undeniable. Large surface mining equipment in the future will doubtless carry more, and not fewer, applications of computers and computer-related products. The intensity of development interest and degree of progress in commercializing such on-board computer and computer-related products on surface mining equipment varies considerably among the manufacturers. Summarized here are the on-board computer-oriented products of three heavy-equipment suppliers-P&H Harnishfeger, Marathon LeTourneau, and Haulpak not a comprehensive survey, but, perhaps indicative of the direction such development is taking.

"Due to recent coal bursts in Australian coalmines, research of coal bursts has attracted intensive interest from mining researchers and engineers worldwide. Previous research has shown that the sudden drop of fractal dimension may be a precursor of catastrophic failure of rock. This paper examines the fractal characteristics of temporal-spatial distribution of acoustic emission signals released during the compression loading process of coal. This research suggests the possibility of coal burst forecasting based on acoustic emission data. The concept and calculation equation of fractal dimension is introduced in this paper. Additionally, uniaxial compression experiments of Australian coal samples are conducted, and the acoustic emission waveform and 3D location are recorded simultaneously by eight sensors Express-8 AE monitoring equipment in the loading process. The experimental results indicate that the continued slowdown of fractal dimension in time sequence can be used as a precursory signal of coal sample brittle failure. The fractal dimension of the spatial distribution of acoustic emission events decreases with the evolution of coal fracturing.INTRODUCTIONCoal bursts refer to the catastrophic failure of overstressed coal subject to the dynamic and static loads. In recent years, coal bursts have occurred in major coal mining countries and this phenomenon has attracted the research interests of international mining and geotechnical scholars. A total of five coal burst accidents happened in Australian coalmines since 2014. On October 20, 2018, a coal burst occurred at Longyun Coalmine in China’s Shandong province, which led to 21 fatalities. Unfortunately, even after decades of research, it seems neither more accurate forecasting methods nor comprehensive controlling measures put forward by researchers have solved the problems posed by coal bursts.As an instantons energy releasing process, coal bursts are always associated with energy dissipation in the forms of acoustic emission, micro seismicity, and electromagnetic radiation (Yamada, Masuda, and Mizutani, 1989). It is believed by many researchers that the frequency–magnitude relationship of micro seismicity induced by rock failure satisfies Gutenberg-Richer relationship as well (Feng et al., 2017). Hence, based on the principal and theory of earthquake source locating, micro-seismicity monitoring equipment has been adopted in many coalmines to locate seismic event origins associated with coal and rock failure in an attempt to better forecast coal and rock bursts. Although many parameters such as b value (parameter of Gutenberg and Richter’s law) (Lu et al., 2015) have been adopted as indicators of risk, the forecasting of coal bursts is still of low accuracy. The same is true with earthquake prediction, as it remains as a worldwide problem even after decades of research and practice. Acoustic emission (AE) methods are now widely adopted to detect rock failure processes under an applied stress for application predicting the abrupt failure of rock in the laboratory (Li et al., 2017). Previous studies have found that significant overlap exists between research regarding AE and micro seismicity with respect to generation process (both are concerned with the generation and propagation of elastic wave) and event origin location, as geophysical signals of both are same (Lockner, 1993). That is, the frequency–magnitude relationship and early-warning indicators found by AE research in the laboratory have a potential applicability to in-field micro seismic monitoring of coal bursts. Through experimental study, Feng and Seto found that the temporal distribution of acoustic emission counts of rock have distinct fractal structures during load-increase processes (Feng and Seto, 1999). Introduction The relationship between precious metal miners and gold refiners has been uneasy over the years. Reasons for this uneasiness and lack of trust include technical factors, economics of scale, and cultural differences. Technical factors take two forms. First, concentrates, precipitates, and sponge produced at the mine site are notoriously difficult to sample. A nonrepresentative sample can be the cause of misunderstanding and distrust. Dote, however, is relatively homogeneous and can be correctly sampled and analyzed with greater reliability. Second, the technology and chemistry of fine gold and silver production is complex and quite different from dote production. Most mining companies are content not to be involved with additional processing steps. From the standpoint of process economies, it is easy to see why miners and refiners are separate groups. Mine location is dictated by the natural occurrence of ore bodies. Heavy capital investment requirements for infrastructure in remote locations usually limits companies to produce the first marketable product from a mine. Beyond that point, the economies of scale and large capital investments for refineries generally dictate that the outputs of several mines be combined to feed a single refinery. The refin¬ing process is so complex that refineries are generally built in larger cities with a skilled labor pool. Therefore, only the largest mines can afford to refine their own output. Lastly, there are cultural differences between the miner and the refiner. The miner, particularly the small gold miner, is by definition a risk taker in a risky business. Refineries, on the other hand, have historically been operated under legal or implied monopolies approved by the government. The government is interested in owning gold, either for currency reasons or because many national mints are major users of gold coins. It is not surprising, then, to find that miners may regard refiners as part of an unresponsive government bureaucracy or, worse, as "city slickers." It is easy for the two groups to distrust each other with these different backgrounds. The interface between miner and refiner does exist and affects nearly all precious metal mining companies and most refineries. This paper discusses the technical and economic aspects of the interface. It points out how both parties can improve the relationship. Technical interface Precious metals selectively dissolve to produce a pregnant solution. They are then recovered from solution by zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe process) or by absorption onto activated carbon. This is followed by stripping and electrowinning. At this point, the mining company must decide whether to ship precipitates (or sponge) to refiners or to produce a dote. Some factors the company must consider are the ability to sample precipitates, concentrates or sponge, security of storage, and production rates. An important factor is the incremental cost (capital and operating) of converting precipitates or sponge into dote at the mine. Generally, mines prefer to melt precipitates or sponge to dote to avoid prob¬lems associated with sampling them. There are three types of fur¬naces used by mining operators to melt precipitates to dote. The first and most widely used is a sil¬icon carbide crucible heated ex¬ternally with a gaseous liquid fuel. The crucible is easy to use and slag can be skimmed before pouring dote. This simple system is capable of handling 1 t/a (32,000 oz per year) gold. It could cost as little as $20,000. More complex systems could cost up to $200,000. The second type of furnace is the gas- or propane-fired rever¬beratory furnace. This is usually used only by large-scale opera¬tors in the silver business. Precip¬itates in reverberatory furnaces come in direct contact with the flame. The large volumes of flue gas can carry significant amounts of dust and fume that must be re¬moved from the gas before dis¬charging it to the atmosphere. In the days when the Rand re¬finery in South Africa used reverberatory furnaces, the silver leaving the furnace in the form of vapor and fume was estimated at 2.2% of the total silver charged to the furnace. The gold in the gases was about 0.03% of the gold charged. Most of this silver and gold was recovered in the exhaust gas scrubber system. These scrub¬ber systems can be more costly than the furnace itself.

A multiple coal fired boiler house provides steam for utility usage in various production plants. Maintaining stable header pressure and boiler availability is of critical importance for downstream consumers. Advanced Process Control comprising of a G2 based expert system and Model Predictive Control was implemented to improve the boiler house performance. The results yielded improvements in the main header pressure stability, reduction in boiler saturation and significant saving in coal consumption. In spite of the many new insulating materials, both synthetic and manufactured, that have been put on the market since the end of World War II, and notwithstanding the many millions of dollars applied to the development of synthetic mica, natural block mica1 is still a most indispensable insulator in various electronic components. It will remain so, barring some spectacular break-through in research that might provide a substitute fully acceptable as a replacement for mica in all of its superior properties. But this is not to say the future for mica is assured, or free from serious problems. Technological advances have created problems requiring a solution to be found if future requirements are to be filled.

In 1996, 92.5% or 233 Mt (257.4 million st) of coal produced in Wyoming came from the Wyodak coal zone in the eastern Powder River Coal Field. While the mined portions of the zone consist of one to three beds of coal with an aggregate thickness between 15 and 33.5 m (50 and 110 ft), the thickest expression is 61 m (200 ft). The delivered coal from this zone averages 0.33% sulfur, 5.12% ash, and 19.98 MJ/kg (8,590 Btu/lb). This coal zone occurs at or near the top of the Paleocene Fort Union Formation, which is overlain by the Eocene Wasatch Formation. There is also production from two coal beds in the lower portion of the Wasatch at the southern end of the basin. Production of coalbed methane derived from the Wyodak coal zone is currently an estimated 10.2 billion cu ft a year. This production is occurring just west and downdip from the coal mines and is increasing each year.

Recurring movements remotely connected with the Murray fracture zone and the San Andreas fault complex, together with the slow northwestward drift affecting the Baja California peninsula, could progressively have accentuated the tensional situation already connected with the anticlinorium in southern Arizona. From the fragmentary data gathered on the Texas lineament, it appears that a very mild curvature, concave to the northeast, may be present along this belt throughout Arizona. Those localities where the successive changes in direc¬tion of the strands of the lineament belt seem to occur do generally coincide with intersections of both north-northwestern and northeastern breaks. It is along the outward, southern fringe of the belt (at such structural centers like Bisbee, Baboquivari, Ajo) that the greatest impact of regional movements could be expected to have occurred through tangential-torsional stresses. Although it si accepted that the north-northwestern and more particu¬larly the northeastern fractures in Southeast Arizona are propitious to or partially responsible for mineralization, it seems undeniable that the Texas lineament belt must have greatly increased the potentialities for ore throughout the Arizona copper province. While intrusive bodies occur near major intersections, with the Texas lineament belt as a common denominator, it seems, the ore deposits are to be found close to one of the intrusive stocks, varying in distance from contiguity (Bisbee) to one or two miles away (Silver Bell orebodies).

This paper attempts to close the gap between extensive rock testing with field measurements and the mine operator's need for safe mine layouts and alternatives. It was found that many of the variables that influence mine geometry and worker safety are relatively unimportant while others are critical. The development of empirical relationships which tie the critical variables to the "safe useful life" of a trona mine layout and observations made in 140 production areas where the variables were researched over a fifteen year period are discussed. The concepts presented may have applicability in mine design for other bedded deposits.

"“Industry 4.0” – “Mining 4.0” - perhaps you have already heard of these terms? These keywords signify the next stage of industrial production. The internet and production technologies are growing closer together. Machines can communicate with one another, wherever they may happen to be located. The “Internet of Things” is the appropriate term. But what does SAFETY 7.0 mean? It is both brand new and traditional at the same time. It also has to do with the success of companies, with efficient production. And yet there is a great deal more at stake. It has to do with our lives and our safety – the supreme commodity in this world. What exactly SAFETY 7.0 means, what the number 0 stands for and the meaning of the number 7, and what this all has to do with mining will be explained in the following article. Mining is a fascinating undertaking. Mining is indispensable for a country’s economic development, whatever that may concern: infrastructure, energy supplies or raw materials for industrial production. Mining has brought forth many technological developments and innovations that can currently be found in our daily lives. Mining is impressive, grandiose and repeatedly fascinates mankind with its immense dimensions. Miners throughout the world still work hard and, for this reason, are bound to one another in a special way. In mining, every man looks out for the other; you have to be able to rely on each other. That creates a strong bond. The other side of the coin is that mining and disasters belong to normality in the media and thus also in our perception. Accidents at work and even catastrophes occur in mining, quarries, or raw material operations almost on a daily basis somewhere in the world. They are often associated with extremely serious injuries, or even a fatal outcome, for the miners affected and, in turn, dramatic consequences for the families of those involved. It could be in China, India, Russia, or somewhere in Africa, Asia or America – it mostly does not happen in front of our door or in our neighbour- hood. Perhaps because of this in the daily concert of negative headlines, we do not register these catastrophes any more in our minds. We write them off under the heading “Nothing special”, since there are, day in day out, more terrible news items about wars, civil wars, famines, or ecological disasters. Things only really change if there is a dramatic number of deaths or when we are personally affected, close by in the vicinity, or can witness the rescue action live. A geological model accounting for uncertainties possesses important advantages for resource estimation. Machine learning algorithms (MLAs) employed on multivariate geochemical datasets open up ways to new methodologies for such geological models with ease in comparison to traditional geostatistical methods. This article proposes a two-step MLA with an ensemble implementation to define geological domains and their uncertainties based on geochemical data. The proposed workflow is applied hierarchically on a dataset from a porphyry copper deposit to perform binary classification that can be attributed to alteration domains.

Silver ore was discovered at Aspen in 1879, but the district did not reach full production until 1888 after lawsuits were settled and railroads furnished less expensive transportation to the outside world. The boom years were 1888-92; production declined thereafter. From the middle 1920's until 1950, the Midnight mine in the Richmond Hill district furnished most of the output in the Aspen quadrangle. Since 1950, little mining has been done at Aspen. The metals produced were silver, lead and zinc. Native silver dissolved from the sulfide ores was redeposited by waters circulating as deep as 300 m below the land surface, resulting in great secondary enrichment of many of the deposits. Over 100 million ounces of silver were produced in the Aspen quadrangle. Low-grade lead-zinc deposits remain between the old workings locally, and data available suggest that primary ore below levels mined is also of low grade. The ore occurs in the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and the lower part of the Pennsylvanian Belden Formation in sites that were made favorable for deposition by a number of stratigraphic and structural factors.

A state of the art computer simulation package, named UTAH-MODSIM is being developed. This package can run on a mainframe (eg. UNIVAC) as well as on a microcomputer (eg. IBM/PC with at least 512 kBytes of core memory). Friendliness was the major concern in developing this software. The user simply generates a complete flowsheet by presenting the flowsheet on a graphics terminal. This flowsheet defines the circuit to be simulated. With the minimum required data, the user can obtain a complete mass and water balances within a few minutes. Moreover, this package will provide scale-up and capital cost information of specified equipment relevant to design. In order to illustrate the utility of this software, three design examples are given. They are: a) A typical multistage crushing plant. b) A reverse closed grinding circuit comparing one stage with two stage classification. c) A standard closed grinding circuit suitable to liberate a specified fraction of chalcopyrite from a copper ore.

Dynatec Mining Limited contracted to sink a lS00 metre (4960 ft.) concrete lined shaft for Falconbridge Nickel Mines in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The shaft is 6.3 metres (20.S ft.) in diameter inside the concrete lining and is equipped with steel furnishings. Dynatec used the owner supplied 4.6 metre (l5 ft.) diameter double-drum hoist to sink the shaft with 12.S tonne buckets for muck removal and 4 cubic metre concrete buckets for concrete placement. One of the unique features of the shaft sinking operation is the use of a four-boom electric hydraulic drill jumbo permanently mounted in the shaft sinking stage. This paper will describe the performance obtained with the electric hydraulic drilling equipment and the high capacity muck removal and concreting equipment.

The concept of disposing of liquid industrial wastes by deep-well injection is not a new one. Brines associated with crude oil long have been disposed of in this manner, with the additional benefit of aiding secondary oil recovery. More recently, with the expansion of nuclear energy, the lethal, highly radioactive wastes which are by-products of the fission process have created severe disposal problems. During the past ten years, a variety of industries have resorted to subsurface disposal, some of the details of which are given elsewhere (1,2). The list reveals wide variations in injection rate, pumping pressure, cost, and waste disposition. Included are successful installations in Western Pennsylvania.

Graphite is soft and easily floatable but it is quite difficult to obtain high purity concentrate at coarse sizes. Chemical treatment can produce high grade concentrate but it is an expensive process. Graphite containing plus 96% fixed carbon (FC) with coarse flakes commands high price in international market. Such graphite concentrate containing plus 96% FC was produced in Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) by using newly developed reagent (mixture of different hydrocarbons and terpenes, IBM/D7) instead of commonly used frothers viz. pine oil, MIBC, kerosine etc. and regrinding in a special type of mill with special grinding media instead of grinding in a conventional ball/ rod mill followed by cleaning. Both the new reagent (frother) and special grinding media are inexpensive and readily available. The process is under patenting. This paper focuses application of this new grinding methodology for flake size protection, and the new reagent for selective flotation of high purity graphite.
