"Foreword by Lisa SchlinkSuperintendent, operations, Freeport-McMoRan Inc.,Green Valley, AZ, USAThe sixth annual Student Poster Contest hosted by the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration was held during the 2015 SME Annual Conference and Expo in Denver, CO. The contest had another record-breaking attendance of 31 entries: 27 graduate and four undergraduate. The universities represented were: Colorado School of Mines, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, University of Wyoming and West Virginia University.The competition began with an extended abstract review by a panel of judges selected from MPD members. At the SME Annual Conference, all students displayed their posters, highlighting their research. The students with the top abstracts from the graduate and undergraduate divisions presented their research at the MPD Student Poster Session Wednesday morning. The panel of judges then provided tallied scores for the abstract, poster and presentation to determine the winners of the 2015 Student Poster Contest. The first- and second-place winners of both the graduate and undergraduate divisions received $1,000 and $500 scholarships, respectively. The third through seventh places received $200 each, and all other entrants received $100 each and were invited to join the MPD Luncheon.In the undergraduate division, Annette Hein of the University of Wyoming received first place for her research on “Solvent Extraction of Europium from a Nitric Acid Solution.” Second place went to Jennifer Galvin of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for her research titled “Solvent Extraction of Neodymium Using PC88A.”In the graduate division, Caelen Anderson of the Colorado School of Mines received first place for his research titled “Fundamentals of Rare-earth Flotation Surface Chemistry: Hydroxamate Adsorption on Bastnasite”. This is Caelen’s fourth year placing in the top finisher. Second place in the graduate division went to Seyed Hassan Amini of West Virginia University for his research on “Ultra Clean Coal Production for the Solar-cell Industry.”The 2015 Student Poster Contest was chaired by Lisa Schlink (Freeport- McMoRan Inc.) and Emily Sarver (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). The panel of judges included Aaron Noble (West Virginia University), Nick Gow (FLSmidth), Ren Bryce (Freeport-McMoRan Inc.), David Perkins (Derrick Corp.), Jim Metsa (Weir Minerals) and Scott Shuey (Newmont).A special thank you is extended to the sponsors of the MPD Student Poster Contest, to all the students who participated and to the panel of judges. "Nucleation and growth of copper on 316L stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate was studied in the absence and presence of chloride ions and/or organic additives – HydroStar® 4208, DXG-F7® and Cyquest® N-900 – using a potentiostatic technique. The current–time data obtained at 0.16V versus the SHE were analyzed using nucleation and growth models. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of deposits produced at 300 A/m2 show that the addition of 20 mg/L chloride ions increased the size and reduced the number of copper nuclei. Potentiostatic current–time data from the electrolyte without organic additives, and confirmed by SEM images, indicate progressive nucleation with two-dimensional growth under diffusion control. None of the organic additives studied at a concentration of 2.5 mg/L with 20 mg/L chloride changed the nucleation and growth mechanism, but the additives increased the number and reduced the size of copper nuclei, leading to more uniform coverage of the stainless steel substrate.IntroductionElectrowinning of copper is an important process in the manufacture of high-purity copper metal. Approximately 20 percent of the world’s refined copper is produced from acidified copper sulfate solutions by electrowinning (Schlesinger, Sole and Davenport, 2011). In many plants, copper is electrodeposited on AISI 316L stainless steel substrates for a period of 6-7 days, after which the copper is stripped from the blanks. Even though the deposition time for a commercial copper electrowinning circuit is around one week, it is critically important to control the nucleation, growth and nature of the initial deposit (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992).Deposit morphology and structure are influenced by the real current density at the electrode surface. The real current density across the cathode surface is made uniform by proper design of the electrowinning cell and electrodes and careful operational practice. Even with good design and control, some current maldistribution occurs. The outcome of severe current maldistribution is poor deposits that affect product quality and/or increase energy consumption. To combat current maldistribution and create a larger operating window in terms of current density, temperature and copper concentration, small amounts of organic smoothing agents – traditionally, guar products – are added to copper electrowinning electrolytes. Moreover, these additives inhibit the growth of copper nodules and lead to improved deposit quality by producing bright, smooth and dense cathodes.Recently, the use of polysaccharides, such as HydroStar 4208 and DXG-F7, and polyacrylamides, such as Cyquest N-900, has been reported in commercial electrowinning tankhouses as replacements for guar (Ashford, Clayton and Sandoval, 2012; Robinson et al., 2013; Sandoval, Morales and Bernu, 2010). However, little information has been published on the effect of these new organic additives, especially regarding the nucleation and growth mechanisms of copper electrodeposits in their presence."

I. INTRODUCTION During the past few years, the state of the art of disposal of solid and liquid waste products from uranium mining and milling operations has experienced some rather interesting and significant changes. Some of these changes have resulted from technological advances in the milling operations and in the engineering aspects of the actual design and construction of the disposal facilities. However, the most significant changes, at least those which have had the greatest impact on the comparative cost and economics of modern disposal systems, have been environmental requirements and regulatory controls, which have become increasingly stringent in recent years. Without delving into the details of the myriad of new laws and regulations which now control the uranium industry, it can be stated with reasonable confidence that one of the principal purposes of more rigid state and federal controls over this industry is the basic desire to promote safer, more reliable and longer term means of effectively controlling and disposing of the potentially objectionable waste products resulting from uranium mining and milling operations. It is difficult to take issue with these basic goals because their need was spawned by past lack of awareness and inattention on the parts of both government and industry to the long term environmental problems and potentially hazardous conditions which can be created by limited planning and ill-conceived or poorly controlled and executed disposal practices. On the other hand, despite the good intentions of those who developed and those who are administering the regulatory controls now in effect, the basic danger exists that overgeneralization of the approach to disposal problems and overrestriction of the potentially acceptable solutions for uranium mine and mill waste disposal could have a significant, adverse economic impact on the mining industry and the ultimate consumers of their products. The regulatory pendulum, which perhaps swung too far toward lack of controls over uranium mill waste disposal in the 1940's, could now well be headed too far in the opposite direction, that is toward over-regulation in the form of restrictions based on technically unrealistic or weakly supportable

"EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The use of membranes for the treatment of Acid-Mine-Drainage (AMD) water has been a 35 year mining industry quest that has only recently produced commercial scale Zero-Liquid-Discharge (ZLD) plants. The process of development of the membrane treatment of AMD has been defined by the water treatment industry’s efforts to control gypsum scaling of the membranes, an artifact of the concentration of calcium and sulfate ions on the concentrate or “brine” side of the membranes. Improved anti-scalants, changes to membrane surface geometry and a lowered permeate flux rate were all part of solving the calcium sulfate (gypsum) scale formation problem. Whether used singly or as part of a multi-stage membrane treatment process, the production of “left over” membrane concentrate or brine, in any volume large or small, was a second barrier to adoption of the method by the mining industry. The two identified “final brine” treatments were a) solar evaporation ponds and b) mechanical evaporators. Brine disposal by solar means is typically site limited to flat terrains or high net evaporation locations. Mechanical evaporation-crystallization is applicable at all sites but, typically, at onerously high ownership and operating costs. Miwatek, a South African water treatment start-up, has entered the mining AMD ZLD marketplace with two new, pilot-scale tested, processes, both of which are predicated on the innovative treatment of a reasonably concentrated AMD and neither of which produces a final brine that requires disposal. In the Miwatek Brine Treatment, MBT, method the membrane brine is caustic pH adjusted and de-calcified precedent to passage through a second membrane plant. The caustic is generated on-site by a lime treatment of the second-membrane concentrate. The first- and second-stage permeates are blended for discharge. The process usually yields no “final brine” for disposal. In the Miwatek Ettringite Treatment, MET, method a low pH first-stage membrane brine is lime treated in two or three steps in the presence of aluminum in a way that metal hydroxide and calcium sulfate solids are formed and purged from the system. Sufficient aluminum is often present in the feed water to, with judicious recycling, enable operation of the lime-aluminum treatment without the purchase of outside aluminum reagent. The first-stage membrane permeate is blended with the lime-aluminum treated membrane concentrate for discharge. The indications are that the method can comfortably meet the low 250 -500 ppm SO4 discharge water quality standards that have most recently been proposed in South America. The process yields no “final brine” that requires disposal. Projected own-operate costs for the MBT and MET systems are less than the estimated costs for all identified alternative treatments."

Environmental pressures on waste disposal are forcing pigment producers to use higher content TiO2 feedstocks with lower levels of trace elements. Despite this, 50% of the worlds TiO2 comes from ilmenite concentrates with only 37 -54 % TiO2 An industry growth rate of 25 % in the next ten years combined with trends to diminishing resources and lower grades for rutile (95 % TiO2) and leucoxenized ilmenite (55 to 90% TiO2) mean that unless new discoveries are made soon, the industry will become even more reliant on ilmenite. A hypothetical ideal feedstock is presented and strategies to obtain it are suggested. Reasons for some of the mineral specifications are given.

PRINCIPLES OF MAGNETIC SEPARATION The application of magnetic separators relies on the different behavior of individual mineral particles under the influence of magnetic forces. When exposed to a magnetic field, all materials are affected in some way. According to whether materials are attracted or repelled by the magnetic field, they are designated paramagnetic or diamagnetic, respectively. Paramagnetic materials are attracted along lines of magnetic force from points of lower magnetic field intensity to points of higher magnetic field intensity. The very strong response of some materials to a magnetic field is sometimes designated ferromagnetic and the particles attracted frequently retain magnetic properties after the applied magnetic field is removed. Diamagnetic materials are repelled along the lines of magnetic force from points of high magnetic intensity to points of lower field intensity. Only limited commercial use of diamagnetic effects has been made. For practical applications, the paramagnetic groupings are: 1. Strongly magnetic (ferromagnetic) 2. Magnetic 3. Weakly Magnetic 4. Non-magnetic The limits of these groupings are not well defined and will vary in some mineral species. Only a few minerals are ferromagnetic (magnetite is an example) and arbitrarily some investigators have selected 10,000 gauss, or 1 Telsa, as the dividing line between low and high intensity magnetic fields. I. S. Wells has developed a table indicating the magnetic intensity required to separate a selected grouping of minerals which is shown in Table 1 on page 2. A similar table has been developed by Carpco Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida in conjunction with the use of its high tension separators. This table, Table 2 on page 3 shows other minerals grouped in the broader categories cited above. Magnetic separation methods are used either to separate valuable minerals from nonmagnetic waste or magnetic impurities or other valuable magnetic minerals from bulk nonmagnetic values. PREFACE In German coal mines the application of tunnel boring machines has become a very effective and economic technique for major development works. After initial trials around 1970 the breakthrough was reached by driving 13 km of road ways on Rheinland and Friedrich Heinrich collieries, using a DEMAG tunnel boring machine of 6 m diameter. INTRODUCTION The coal mines of Rheinland and Friedrich Heinrich are to be found in the West of the Ruhr Area, the largest coal mining area in the Federal Republic of Germany (Table 1). They form part of the Ruhrkohle company. Rheinland coal mines produces 41000 to 43000 t of run-of-mine coal every day, of which 20500 t are usable coal. Friedrich Heinrich has a daily production of 17000 t of run-of-mine coal, 9000 t of which are usable. The coal is worked at depths of 600 to 1100 m in seams 0.6 to 3.0 m thick. The method of mining is longwall, and the machines used are ploughs and shearer loaders. From 1973 to 1980 a programme was put into operation in these two mines to develop and open up the coal field on the 885 m level. A total tunnel length of 20 km was to be driven. Gold production is one the most important mineral process­ing industries in Western Australia. The gold is usually found in either weathered oxidised zones, or associated with sulfides. In the latter case, oxidation is achieved by some form of chemical processing, such as roasting or more recently bacterial leaching. In all cases, gold is dissolved out of the oxidised matrix by cyanide solution. Pyrrhotite is an iron sulfide generally represented by the formula Fe1_,S where O x 0.125. Three different structural forms ofpyrrhotite are known to occur naturally, stoichiometric FeS (troilite), hexagonal pyrrhotite Fe1_xS and monoclinic pyrrhotite Fe7S8 [I]. Substitution of iron atoms within the pyrrhotite structure by other ions of similar atomic radius such as nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese is also possible [2], and often observed in natural pyrrhotite samples. Pyrrhotite is abundant in Western Australian sulfide mineral deposits which are commonly associated with gold bearing ores. It is generally believed that pyrrhotite has a detrimental effect on gold recovery from such ores, as it is commonly claimed to decompose in alkaline, aerated cyanide solutions to form iron cyanide complexes, thus consuming free cyanide, and to form sulfur/oxygen containing species such as sulfate, through oxidation of sulfur in pyrrhotite, which thus consumes oxygen. From information gleaned from the literature, claims about the high reactivity of pyrrhotite in cyanide appear to be based on early cyanidation studies performed on gold ore samples which have been poorly characterised, and contained impurities such as pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite, which may have also contributed to the levels of species observed in solution [3-5]. In addition, the investigations do not take into account that iron atoms in the pyrrhotite structure may have been partially substituted by other atoms that influence the solubility of pyrrhotite in cyanide solution.

Research over a period of ten years resulted in the development of an efficient automatic ore feed regulator for mill grinding circuits. The facilities that a large mining company gave the inventor made it possible to develop the control apparatus under actual mill operating conditions. The Littlewood Regulator automatically determines the optimum power input at which a mill should operate, and controls the rate of ore feed to maintain this optimum power for any predetermined operating conditions. It is to be noted that the optimum power varies with many factors such as ball, rod, and mill liner wear, therefore the regulator is designed to automaticall keep itself properly calibrated. To efficiently control the rate of ore feed of a mill grinding circuit the regulator analyzes and interprets all power changes of the mill motor. The critical electrical measurements for this type of control are made possible by a patented device that has the ability to detect and integrate minute changes in power. In ball mill operation the small but significant changes in power serve to select the rate of ore feed in accordance with the rate at which ore accumulation takes place within the mill, and in rod mill operation they serve to select the rate of ore feed in accordance with the degree of rod spread.

"The use of composite linings, consisting of permanent sprayed primary and secondary linings with a sandwiched spray applied waterproofing membrane is expected to improve efficiency and reduce lining thickness, but it also brings complex primary-secondary lining interaction. This issue is further complicated by the uncertainty regarding the long-term behavior and parameters of the sprayed concrete–sprayed membrane interface.This paper aims to address this issue by presentation of a series of numerical analyses of a typical shallow SCL tunnel in soft ground with a range of design assumptions on the interface behavior: (1) compression only; (2) compression and tension; and (3) compression, tension, and shear.The results demonstrate that the assumed interface behavior has a significant impact on the primary-secondary lining interactions. A design approach of ignoring the tension and shear bond at the interface may not be conservative particularly for serviceability. This paper explains the rationale behind these conclusions and discusses the implications for design.INTRODUCTIONSprayed Concrete Tunnel Lining SystemsSprayed concrete linings (SCL) have been used in conventional tunneling for decades. However, details of SCL systems may differ to a large extent depending on ground conditions and specific tunneling methodologies.In hard rock conditions, for example, drill and blast excavation is typically supported by rock bolts and sprayed concrete (NGI 2014). Such tunnels are usually designed fully drained and the above-mentioned support elements considered permanent without the need for a further inner liner. Therefore, there is no structural interaction between separate lining shells to consider.In conventional tunneling in the European Alps, a double shell lining is typically utilized, consisting of an outer (primary) sprayed concrete lining and an inner (secondary) cast-in-place concrete lining, separated by a waterproofing system. The primary lining normally includes rock bolts and may include other support elements. The waterproofing system is usually based on a plastic membrane and a geotextile fleece. The tunnel may be designed fully or partially drained or fully undrained. Although there are two structural lining shells interacting, investigation of such interaction is generally irrelevant to designers because the primary lining is considered only temporary (fully sacrificial in the long term). An overview of reasons for this assumption is given, for example, by Lemke (2014). The secondary lining is designed to resist all foreseeable loads on the tunnel. The primary lining may, in reality, interact structurally with the secondary lining during the life span of the tunnel. However, since the secondary lining design must cover all possible (extreme) scenarios, investigation of such interaction does not bring any value to the design."

Perlite is not a trade name but a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous volcanic rock. A distinguishing feature which sets perlite apart from other volcanic glasses is that when heated to a suitable point in its softening range, it expands 5 to 20 times its original volume. This expansion is due to the presence of 2% to 6% combined water in the crude perlite rock. When quickly heated above 1600°F (871°C) crude perlite pops in a manner similar to popcorn. The combined water vaporizes and creates countless tiny bubbles in the heat softened glassy particles. It is these tiny glass sealed bubbles which account for the amazing lightweight and other exceptional physical properties of expanded perlite. The bulk densities of the expanded perlite generally range from 3 pounds per cubic foot (48 Kg M3) to 10 pounds per cubic foot (160 Kg H3).

INTRODUCTION Located on the Colorado River on the Nevada-Arizona border about 56 km (35 miles) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, Hoover Dam is a gravity arch dam 221 m (726') high for electric power generation and water supply. The head waters of the dam form a large reservoir, Lake Mead. The dam is equipped with two emergency spillways, one in the Nevada abutment and one in the Arizona abutment. Both spillways which are concrete lined and 15.25 m (50') in diameter, were intended for use only if Lake Mead is full and incoming flow of the Colorado River exceeds the discharge capacity of the turbines and regular bypass conduits. In the spring of 1984, a combination of rain and unusually rapid snow melt required the opening of the spillways for only the second time in the 50 year history of the dam. As in the previous use in 1942, the massive discharge of water through the tunnels resulted in severe damage to the concrete Linings of both tunnels. This damage is the result of cavitation which occurs as the discharge water flows at very high velocities over minor irregularities in the concrete lining. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has long been aware of the cavitation effect which occurs during these high volume discharges and has been studying solutions. One solution to the problem is to induce air bubbles into the flowing water to eliminate the vacuum associated with cavitation. This solution had been implemented at Yellowtail, Flaming Gorge, Blue Mesa, and Glen Canyon dams by constructing an aeration slot in the inclined portion of their spillway tunnels. Since the spillways of Hoover Dam were already in need of repair, the BUREC decided to construct similar facilities in each of the two 15.25 m (50') diameter spillways coincidental with the other repairs required.

Flotation recovery of molybdenite particles finer than 15 micrones sharpy decreases with decreasing size. A totally hydrophobic latex agglomerant (UBC-1), which was previously reported to be very efficient in agglomerating hydrophobic fine coal, has been found to agglomerate fine molybdenite particles. The agglomeration takes place only in the presence of MIBC which is commonly used as a frother in molybdenite flotation. Adsorption tests confirmed that MIBC is adsorbed onto molybdenite. The effect of the agglomeration on flotation has been studied by floating fine molybdenite from mixtures with quartz using the UBC-l agglomerant and the MIBC frother. A significant improvement in the flotation of fine molybdenite has been observed in the presence of the UBC-l agglomerant. The best results have been obtained around pH 5.5 which corresponds to the iso-electric-point of molybdenite.

We have developed a high-performance, flexible scheme for interpolating multi-dimensional data. The technique can reproduce exactly the results obtained, for example, from Ordinary Kriging and related techniques in 3D, or from Thin-Plate Splines (Briggs' minimum-cuwature algorithm) in 2D. Moreover, com- pared to traditional implementations of these algorithms, our method enjoys large computational-cost savings. The new approach produces an interpolation that obeys a Partial Differential Equation (PDE). The PDE may arise from physically based arguments, but its form can vary widely. It might be specified only implicitly (as through a Model Variogram), or be nonlinear (although a performance penalty could then apply). While a formal equivalence between Kriging and Splines has been known for some time (Matheron, 1980), the present derivation, from radial basis functions, further illuminates this connection. Thus, for example, we can make explicit the PDEs that underlie some of the Model Variograms most often used in Geostatistics. Besides its practical utility, the work thereby ac- quires a theoretical interest.

INTRODUCTION Since Canada commenced sulphur exports in the early 1960's, the volume of exports has grown steadily and by 1984 Canadian sulphur accounted for 45% of internationally traded sulphur. In 1984 a total of 7.6 million tonnes of Canadian sulphur was shipped to offshore markets and the U.S.A. Total shipments, including domestic sales, were 8.3 million tonnes. With a production of some 5.6 million tonnes, inventory was drawn down by nearly 3 million tonnes in order to keep pace with demand. Since 1979, world consumption has exceeded total world production and Canadian sulphur inventory has played a truly crucial role in balancing world supply and demand. Consequently, by the end of 1984 the Canadian inventory, which stood at 21 million tonnes in 1978, had been almost halved to 12 million tonnes. This inventory, however, is still by far the largest in the world and will continue to play a vital role in the world supply until expected depletion around 1990. Canada is the world's second largest producer of sulphur following the U.S.A.. The Current production level of between 5 and 6 million tonnes per annum is forecast to be maintained to 1990 with only a marginal fall in that production level in the following decade to the year 2000. This will ensure that Canada retains its position as one of the largest producers and most important suppliers of sulphur in the world market well into the future. CANADA AS WORLD SUPPLIER OF SULPHUR Since Canada commenced sulphur exports in the early 19601s, exports have grown steadily. (Figure 1) The rate of growth accelerated in recent years and in 1984 a total of 7.6 million tonnes was sold for export, compared to 3.0 million tonnes in 1975 and less than 1 million tonnes in 1964. World trade in sulphur also increased during this period, from 11 million tonnes in 1975 to 17.0 million tonnes in 1984 (Figure 2). Most of this increase in volume was accounted for by Canada and Poland. As a result, the importance of Canada as world supplier expanded from 28% in 1975 to 45% in 1984. The markets for Canadian sulphur can be divided into two broad categories, i.e., solid and liquid (Figure 3). The solid market is the largest, taking about 70% of Canadian output, virtually all of which is sold offshore. The U.S.A. and the Canadian domestic market take about 20% and 10% respectively, in liquid form. In 1984, (figure 4) total Canadian sulphur sales exceeded 8 million tonnes with offshore export sales at a record 5.8 million tonnes and sales to the U.S. of 1.8 million tonnes. Domestic sales accounted for only 0.7 million tonnes. The general trend for offshore export sales has been upward whereas there has been relative stability in domestic sales. The exceptional growth in offshore sales in the 1970's necessitated considerable capital investments by the industry in order to establish a logistics system capable of handling increasing offshore tonnages. Over 50 sulphur plants are currently operating in Alberta and British Columbia. Some of these are connected by rail, (Figure 5) the balance being generally connected by road. There are currently fourteen of the larger rail-connected plants designated as export plants, and these are equipped with sulphur forming facilities. The long distances between these plants and tidewater terminals in Vancouver is a very significant factor in complex logistics of Canadian offshore sulphur exports (Figure 6). Alberta and B.C. plants are located an average of 1,400 kilometers from tidewater.

The trend to higher solids paper coating and to neutral/alkaline papermaking is causing an above average growth in the use of calcium carbonate as both a paper coating and a paper filling pigment. These developments are expected to continue well into the 1990s. Thus, calcium carbonate will account for a somewhat larger percentage of total paper pigment volume. Nevertheless, overall growth in paper tonnage coupled with an increase in filler pigment percentages will create a demand for larger quantities of other pigments as well. Kaolin will continue to be the dominant paper pigment by far, with continued growth though at a somewhat slower rate than calcium carbonate.

Materials related problems at mines can be big ones - like a newly completed 1 -m (3.5ft) water pipeline burst during initial filling, grinding ball consumption at double the typical norms on startup of a new semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuit or 30 open-pit haul trucks in the shop for new bed liners after less than a year’s service. Materials engineering provides solutions to these kinds of equipment problems by selecting good materials and designs, by trouble-shooting service failures and by maintaining high quality in vendor-furnished materials and components. Materials with good properties, correctly made and fabricated, correctly installed in mining and processing equipment, produce ore and final products reliably and efficiently. Materials engineering, applied during design phases, specification writing, and receipt and installation of materials, ensures that equipment will have the best possible shot at performing up to expectations. Good calls on materials properties - specifying state-of-art materials produced by competent manufacturers - help mine managers to reduce downtime and mining and processing costs. Materials that are improperly made or specified can make a mining operation less efficient or, possibly, uneconomical.

Benchtop experiments were performed, in which an electric field was used to enhance separation of water from phosphatic clay suspensions from a central Florida mine. A constitutive relationship was established that relates the increase in solids content to operating time and the applied electric field. An upper limit to the degree of separation was found to be a function of electric field, and the time required to achieve this limiting value was also a function of electric field. The energy requirement for removal of water ranged from 1.25 to 175 Wh/kg water removed as a function of the electric field. A mathematical model was developed that provided good agreement to the experimental values and served to validate the constitutive relationship.

The Stanreck mine of Stanreck Uranium Mines Limited in located on Quirks Lake in the Elliot lake - Blind River area of Northern Ontario. It is approximately 25 miles north of the north shore of Lake Huron, equidistant between the cities of Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie. The property was developed ad brought into production at a rate of 3,000 tens of ore/day during the uranium boom of the mid 1950's. By 1960 mine waters were becoming quite acid through the activity of bacteria. Treatment of this water was begun for pollution control and a small amount of uranium which had been leached from the ore by these acid waters was recovered. Development of bacterial leaching with a view to increasing production by this method commenced in December 1962. Subsequently, it was succeesfull in producing 10,000 - 15,000 lbs. of U308/month. Since late 1964 uranium production has been obtained solely from bacterial leaching. A rare earth concentrate was also made for its yttrium content during 1966 and 1967. This paper describes the development, operation and methods used in the underground bacterial leaching process.
