Unitization and containerization continue to grow with great rapidity throughout the world today. Every industrial nation outside of the Iron Curtain is devoting more and more time toward research of these developing sciences. Unitization and containerization are proving to be the solution to many of modern industry's most pressing handling and shipping problems. Manufacturers make large savings, carriers receive many benefits, and customers take an increasing interest in demanding that their shipments either be unitized or containerized. Unit-loads consist of items, packages or bulk materials pre-assembled into a convenient mass for handling by mechanized equipment and to fit the internal dimensions of carriers. It has been found that unitized handling and shipping offers cost savings too great to be ignored by anyone interested in the distribution of goods. At present, the benefits from unitized shipping and handling are being enjoyed only to a small extent due to the failure of many persons concerned with handling practices in recognizing only some of the advantages of unitization. Before the full benefits of unitized handling and shipping can be realized, some major changes in packaging and distribution practices will be necessary on the part of industry. Numerous investigations in the last two years show conclusively that there are more advantages and more inherent savings for shipping goods on pallets in unit loads than by any other method. There is no question that unit-load handling can offer significant advantages to the user over piece-by-piece package handling. Reduction in handling costs is the primary objective of such activities, but it is by far not the sole objective. Some of the other benefits that can be realized are:

A glauconitic siltstone sample with a potash content of 10% is investigated as a potential potash source. The fine grain structure comprises potash bearing phases of glauconite, muscovite, and microcline. The as-received samples showed poor dissolution ~ 5%. Planetary ball milling was attempted for the dissociation of the underlying silicate structure for the potash release, and ~ 60% potash was obtained after 12-h milling. Mechanical activation (8 h, 60% NaOH) prior to heat treatment (600 °C, 30 min) was found successful in recovering more than 95%K values from glauconite. The final residue consists mainly of quartz, indicating a complete breakdown of the silicate matrix. The mechanical activation process followed is simple, adaptable, and less energyintensive compared to existing methods.

The paper presents the results of a plant test using WEMCO 1 + 1 enclosed flotation machines for inert gas (nitrogen) flotation of by-product molybdenite from copper sulfide concentrate. Copper depressant consumption in the rougher flotation stage was reduced by 68% as reagent consuming oxygen was removed from the flotation air. Unlike other nitrogen flotation systems used in the industry, nitrogen is recovered above the flotation cells and from froth in tails and concentrate streams and recycled, resulting in minimal nitrogen makeup requirement.

In the municipality of Rio Quito, department of Chocó, Colombia, alluvial gold has been illegally exploited by suction dredging. The project consists of using geospatial techniques to identify degraded areas and analyze the viability of remediation dredging to mitigate environmental liabilities. The area has sediments contaminated by mercury and cyanide, so it is necessary to reconform the riverbed with the remediated material. For the last four years, the Kilborn Group of Companies has been involved in several major projects in the Confederation of Independent States (CIS). These include the Kumtor project, the Kubaka gold project, the Kazgold project, the Aginskoe project and the Jerooy project. These projects are all in various stages of detailed engineering and construction. Western mining companies are pursuing mining opportunities throughout the world in search of ore bodies for development. The quest for profitable mining ventures has led mining companies to South America and Asia and, more recently, to the former Soviet Union. When considering the CIS, several factors should be considered. The most notable are geography, mining culture and previous mining production.

The use of nitrogen in molybdenite flotation circuits is a relatively new concept utilized by only a few mines around the world. This paper briefly discusses circuit chemistry and the reason for its success. It follows the entire testing process which resulted in a sodium hydro-sulphide dosage reduction from 18.5 to 4.4 lbs/ ton (9250 to 2200 g/t) through to the final installation of an inert gas generator which will produce reagent savings in excess of one million dollars annually. A description of the various types of nitrogen generators commercially available is included.

An infrared external reflection spectroscopy (ERS) technique has been developed to study the structure of the adsorbed layer of ethyl xanthate formed on copper and natural chalcocite (Cu2S) electrodes. The infrared technique provides information concerning the identity and the orientation of the adsorbed species at monolayer and submonolayer coverages. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies have also been conducted to monitor changes at the surface. The results show that the first oxidation peak on the voltammograms for copper and the first and second oxidation peaks on the voltammograms for chalcocite electrodes are not characteristic of a chemisorbed xanthate species, which is contrary to what has been reported by other investigators previously. As evidenced by the XPS spectra, there was an increase in sulfur relative to copper on the copper and chalcocite surfaces over the potential region where these oxidation processes occur. The spectroscopic results (ERS, XPS) indicate that the second and third (on copper) and the third and fourth (on chalcocite) oxidation processes recorded on the voltammograms are due to cuprous ethyl xanthate adsorption. The orientation of the adsorbed molecules of xanthate was observed to change with increasing surface coverage. Therefore, it has been concluded that xanthate can modify the copper and chalcocite surface in two different ways. At lower potentials, xanthate is a source of sulfur for the formation of a sulfur-rich surface. At higher potentials, an adsorption layer of cuprous ethyl xanthate is formed. Contact angle measurements show that both of these processes of xanthate surface modification lead to an increase in the hydrophobicity of the substrates.

Introduction A problem that has faced mining engineers and mining geologists for many years is how to best explore a particular prospect so that the basic decision as to whether the material present is ore or only high-grade rock can be made with some confidence. It is obvious that one could not begin a large scale mining program on the basis of tests made on a few hand samples. On the other hand, one could not be 100 percent certain as to the average grade or tonnage before beginning development, as this would require the orebody to be mined out in the sampling process. The basic objectives of the exploration program can be stated as (1) to reduce mining risk; (2) to lessen the cost of development; and (3) to increase the profits of mining. The exploration program should be terminated when these objectives are no longer being met. The construction of tunnels is a specific mining operation. In the exploration program one should gather the data needed to determine (1) the type of excavation technique(s) to be used; and (2) the rate of advance that might be expected. As in the evaluation of an orebody, with the data collected it should be possible to estimate mining costs and project life. Unfortunately, at the present time, it is not possible to do this at least when dealing with medium to hard rock types. The reason for this, it is felt, is basically the inability to identify what specific rock mass properties are of use in tunnel design and to specify how these may be obtained in an exploration program. The flotation performance of Florida phosphate rock was evaluated in terms of the mixing behavior of reagents with particulates during anionic conditioning of phosphate slurries. The various conditioning variables that influence mixing, namely, solids loading, agitation speed and the conditioning time were investigated to determine their effect on reagent coating on the particles. The phosphate recovery was used to monitor the conditioning efficiency. The mixing characteristics of the phosphate feed were evaluated in terms of the ratio of the mixing power P, to the minimum power Pm' required to keep the slurry in suspension. It was found that mixing conditions govern the conditioning time required to obtain high recovery. Reagentization was slower at lower P /P m ratios. At higher P /P m ratios, the flotation recovery was optimized and the agitation speed was found to have no significant effect on it. Optimum mixing conditions were obtained for a 74 wt% slurry at an agitation speed of 450 (47 rad/s) rpm. Under the optimum conditions of mixing, recovery was improved at low collector dosages and short conditioning times.

Large diameter autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding mills represent the primary thrust of the expanding grinding technology. In spite of initial difficulties, large autogenous and semi-autogenous mills have reached an acceptable level of technology which provides the mineral engineer with a reliable, low cost means of ore comminution. A successful milling installation begins during the design stage of the grinding mill and the plant it is to be installed in. This is particularly true in autogenous and semi-autogenous mills. Critical mill and plant design factors should be considered while the mill and installation are still only ?paper.? Various current liner designs will be discussed ranging from lifter bar/plate to integral types. Modes of operation such as "high-low" will be considered. Liner maintenance procedures ranging from laydown area in plant design, proper mill shutdown methods, to installation and bolt tightening complete the equation to yield optimum performance possible for any particular grinding application. The objective of this paper is to discuss trends in wear materials, designs and operating practices, and provide some guidelines for good practice as we move through the 1980's. We will put together concepts that relate to the designs, materials and applications so that higher performance can be obtained by the operator for his specific application. The concepts are shown as being in series because they are dependent on each other to achieve the desired performance.

The CH Leaching process is a new, more sophisticated, form of gold, silver, uranium and sulfide copper heap leaching wherein each layer of a multi-layered heap is divided into a number of independent cells, each of which are successively formed and leached in the top layer of the heap to their maximum economic recoveries, and then rinsed and sealed from further leaching. Triangular earth berms form the outside walls of the heap and a gridwork of rock-filled berms on top of the bottom pad form independent under- heap solution storage zones. The high degree of solution recirculation and staging that occurs in this process produces a relatively small volume of very rich pregnant solution. The cellular heap design and its mode of operation result in a uniform, intensive, long-term leach for all of the ore particles in the heap. Besides improved metal recoveries, the process appears to have several cost and operating advantages. In the CR2MR process, sulfuric acid and a soluble sulfide are added to a gold and/or silver pregnant leach liquor to precipitate most of the contained silver, mercury, copper, etc. as sulfides at a pH below 2.5. The other product of the reaction is solubilized HCN. Following a liquid-solid separation step, cyanide is regenerated in the supernatant solution by raising the pH to a level above 9.0. This process regenerates a portion of the cyanide used in the leaching step, removes contaminant ion species (silver, copper, mercury, etc.) from the leach solution and, in a subsequent step, recovers the gold in an enriched form. It is believed that substantial cost savings may be experienced by the use of this process in some gold and/or silver leach systems.

The Egyptian marine phosphorite of Sebaiya West, the Nile Valley, consisting of both non-oxidized hard siliceous and oxidized leached friable ore types, is subjected to a roughing-cleaning silica flotation circuit for production of wet-process phosphoric acid concentrate. Operating at its maximum capacity of 268 t/hr, the following were the main problems encountered during the early stages of running the plant: 1. The tremendous amount of slimes generated by scrubbing the crushed ore causing turbidity in the plant thickener after a short time of operation, regardless of the added flocculant. 2. Rod mill choking leading to inefficient performance of all other equipment and poor flotation results. 3. The drastic increase in imported oleic acid price. Pulp density and slurry flowrate measurements at different points of the plant as well as ore microscopy, size distribution analysis, chemical analysis and x-ray diffraction analysis of representative ore samples coupled with Work Index measurements of feed samples showed that the wide variation in the ore's hardness was responsible for such problems. Application of the locally produced non-edible rice bran oil as a substitute to imported oleic acid in flotation resulted in total saving of U.S.$2 million in 1990. The total unsaturated fatty acid content of the oil is high, ranging from 75.2 to 81.5 mole % of which the C18-unsaturated fatty acid content ranges from 72 to 79 mole %.

A fairly complex analysis is required to select, or evaluate a piece of excavating and bulk handling equipment and obtain its performance. At present there is little agreement as to what specific points should be considered, and even less on what procedure to follow. This paper provides both of these in a consistent and direct form. The analysis applies to all types and sizes of equipment from the bulldozer and the continuous miner, to the B.W.E. The importance of the equipment characteristics, job activities, and work conditions are stressed and separate analytical stems are established in a flow chart for these. They are combined using suitability tests in the following steps: 1) problem statement, 2) natural conditions, 3) suitability guidelines, 4) appropriate equipment types, 5) operational activities, 6) encumbered space, 7) geometric design, 8) equipment sizing, 9) failure and limits, 10) performance and consumption, 11) public policy checks, and 12) costs and profitability. Public policy and economics while considered throughout receive emphasis towards the end. The procedure is iterative, containing distinct feedback loops. Specifying the steps and sequence provides a necessary structure which has long been overdue.

With the aim of environment protection the program package HOMOGEN is used for realizing the planning and noxious components control in the coal produced. Using the program package PRIPREMA the division in levels and transformation (Hermite polynoms) in the N (0,1) distribution are made. By separated kriging 50 m x 50 m blocks are estimated on the levels and detailed distributions of the estimated component content are obtained. The face - longwall face is built in the blocks estimated in this way, and the direction of mining is determined. Using the stochastic simulation the distribution of the estimated production component (e.g. sulfur) on the face is obtained. Simulating the production of all faces in operation the distribution of the estimated daily mine production component is obtained. The estimated depot component is obtained in the same way. This procedure is used in the short-term planning of the estimated component movement for a given period in advance, and also in the daily production control in the case of changing conditions, e.g. the increased atmospheric pressure. The technology is successfully applied to the Velenje Lignite Mine Slovenia.

The purpose of my presentation is threefold: a) to make you aware of what is available in Canada in terms of refractory minerals. b) indicate the mineral deposits that have potential for development. c) show the advantages of Canada as a supplier of electrical energy necessary for the production of electrofused minerals. Canada is a producer of natural refractory minerals, electrofused minerals, and synthetic refractory minerals. Several deposits also have good potential for development. The natural refractory minerals produced in Canada are shown in Table 1. The major minerals by decreasing order of importance in terms of tonnage and values are: dolomite, graphite and magnesite.

The science of predicting future water quality at hardrock mine sites has been practiced for at least the past 30 years. As part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), mines and other industrial facilities in the United States on federal land are required to estimate impacts to the environment, including direct impacts to water quality and indirect impacts that are later in time but still reasonably foreseeable (Kempton and Atkins, 2000; Bolen, 2002). Facilities on private land in the United States may also be subjected to State or federal processes that may or may not require prediction of potential impacts to water resources. Other countries have followed a similar approach, largely based on the requirements of NEPA. A wide array of scientific approaches has been used to predict water quality that could result from construction, proposed expansion, or other action at an industrial facility. In this study, we review the methods and models used to predict water quality at hardrock mine sites, with an emphasis on uncertainties associated with these techniques. Because water quantity and quality are interrelated, methods and models used to predict water quantity will also be discussed, but the emphasis will be on how these methods relate to water quality. This study brings together technical information on water-quality predictions at mine sites in a single paper, and attempts to present a straight-forward approach to using and evaluating the results of the methods and models used to predict water quality at mine sites. Approaches developed primarily in the United States, Canada, and Australia and applied in these countries and in other parts of the world, especially in the last 10 years, are discussed, and the format of the study is geared toward use by regulators of hardrock mines. The approach and results of this study could also be used by environmental managers at mine sites and community groups, and allows for the creation of a checklist for prediction methodology used at mine sites.

In this paper the phrase "exploration for blind metal deposits" refers to exploration activities geared to the discovery of metal deposits which cannot be located by visual surface inspection. The word "system" refers to all of the components (people, money, corporations, techniques, etc.) which collectively result in an exploration process. The details of the system or systems which I have employed in exploration will not be discussed because of client relationships. However, some of the more severe problems in exploration result from how the system's components interact and our attitudes as to what exploration data is telling us, if anything. It is these items which will be discussed. Exploration for blind metal deposits, which has been relatively intense over the last 2S years compared to rather minor outlays prior to World War II has often been an uncoordinated assortment of various specialists employing various techniques (see Dickerson -1). In a program geared to the location of blind deposits, the lack of outcropping deposits or occurrences should not be a deterrent to a well conceived and well planned program. The severe cyclical swings in exploration activity, although often coinciding with depressed metal prices, by and large result from the failure of exploration operators to present a coherent and realistic program to management. It is my opinion that the stream of complaints criticizing management for cyclical exploration support are mostly unwarranted, as many of the programs and goals are ill defined. Although depressed market conditions may serve as the catalyst for exploration cuts, the underlying cause is that when the "chips are down", the non-directional, non-specific nature of many programs is revealed. Thus management should not be castigated for eliminating such programs during bad times, but rather they should be castigated for supporting them during boom periods.

The mining industry of the World, and particularly of the United States, has made a complete reversal from underground to surface mining methods since the turn of the 20th Century. This has occurred even as average ore grades were decreasing and strip ratios rising. In the early 1900's there were over 100 underground mines producing from the three iron ranges of Minnesota -- today there are hone. Practically all of our coal prior to 1930 was mined underground; today over one-third is from surface operations and that percentage is increasing. Although world mining has hot changed to surface techniques as rapidly as has the U. S. Industry, the shift is escalating and will approach our figures shortly. A comparison of World and U. S. production figures are shown in Table 1, taken from the AIME Surface Mining volume, and the trend rates for the U. S. are depicted in Fig. 1.

Bailey, John Campbell Greenway and Edward Steidle will join 227 other mining industry honorees when formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame. The Prazen Living Legend of Mining Award will go to the Powell River Project Research and Education Center, a partnership of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and the Appalachian coal mining industry.The 2015 annual induction banquet and ceremony will be the 28th such event and will be held this year in Pittsburgh, PA, on Oct. 23, 2015, in the Omni William Penn Hotel ballroom.2015 National Mining Hall of Fame inductees:Frank F. "INTRODUCTION Istanbul is a unique megalopolis connecting two continents. Population growth and economic development require permanent solutions and continuous investments on the transportation infrastructure. While the average population growth rate in Turkey is around 1.3% per annum, Istanbul is growing at an even faster rate of more than 1.5%. Even more striking is the fact that car ownership in Istanbul is increasing 5% a year, which is four times faster than the population growth. Although Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has worked persistently to improve the quantity and quality of the public transportation system in the city through, in particular, extending the available rail system network, the need for extra roads has always fallen behind demand. To make things worse, Istanbul is divided by the Bosphorus Strait, the large waterway connecting the Black Sea to the north and Marmara Sea to the south, which leads to the Mediterranean. This waterway is crossed via two suspension bridges, the Bosphorus Bridge built in 1973 and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge built in 1988. Current daily traffic across the bridges is around 450,000 vehicles per day. Ever increasing cross-Bosphorus traffic demands require other routes to be in place a soon as possible. While a third bridge farther north is currently under construction, yet another tunnel crossing is coming to the end of construction and is planned to be in service by December 2016. Being implemented under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Project (ISRTP, the Project) has been under the spotlight not only because of its distinctive technical characteristics but also because of its robust business model, exacting financial and legal arrangements, diverse stakeholders and challenging organizational management structure. The following paragraphs offer an overall view of the Project from inception to where it stands now and extend to the imminent operational phase, touching lightly on all major aspects of this challenging journey."
