Introduction Pebble mill grinding can be defined as wet or dry grinding in a tumbling mill with pebbles used as grinding media instead of metal balls. To clarify the terminology, which may differ in the various mineral industries, it is essential to point out the differences between grinding with partially sized and carefully sized grinding media. When grinding with partially sized media (limited top size only), sizing is usually the setting of the primary crusher and there is no bottom sizing-all fines, chips, sand, and small sizes are included. This is often called run-of-mine or primary autogenous grinding. In this case the entire crusher discharge is fed into the mill and part of it becomes "charge" and the rest is "sand feed." When grinding with carefully sized media (i.e., media that is sized both at the top and bottom of the size range), no fines or chips should be present in the charge to the mill. This is pebble milling and the grinding media consists of ore, rock, Danish pebbles, gravel pebbles, or ceramic pebbles-media that is appreciably lighter than steel balls. The grind¬ing charge is fed to the mill to maintain a load and it does the grinding usually on a classified sand product of suitable size. If the grinding media is the same as the raw material being ground, this type of grinding is also called secondary autogenous grinding. Pebble milling was in common use in the gold mines of South Africa in the early 1900s. It is by far the oldest form of autogenous grinding. It may be used to grind crushed ores from a maximum size of about -% in. to all -10 µm. Pebble milling differs from "run of mine" grinding in many ways, but two big differences are: I) The ore itself is crushed to approximately t/4 in., or it may be further reduced to 8 or 10 mesh in a rod mill or fine crusher. 2) Then carefully screened ore of the correct size is placed in one or more stages of pebble mills to grind the ore to its desired final size. The media size is carefully selected to be the most efficient for the particular size reduction required in each stage. This is a precise practice, and pebble mills can be designed as easily and accu¬rately as can rod mills or ball mills by those skilled in the art. A pebble mill is a rotating cylinder in which the grinding media has been carefully sized for the job in hand. If the mill is doing coarse grinding, the media will be correspondingly large and the mill might be called a primary (or intermediate) pebble mill or a lump mill. If it is to do fine grinding, the media selected is proportionately smaller and the mill would be called a secondary or tertiary pebble mill. The media itself is normally rounded pebbles made from screened ore from the primary-crusher discharge. The charge could be rounded pebbles of the correct size removed from a primary autogenous mill, or the pebbles could be carefully sized gravel, sized beach pebbles, or sized flint pebbles. Usually the specific gravity of a pebble is from 35 to 55% of that of steel balls. It commonly varies from 2.66 to 4.2, depending on the specific gravity of the ore. Primary pebble mills, or lump mills, would be charged with pieces of rock up to 10 in. maximum and 5 in. minimum and would grind crusher discharge with a maximum size of 1/4 in. on hard ores and 3/8 in. on softer ores. Secondary pebble mills could be charged with pieces of rock screened on 4 x 4-in. square mesh and retained on 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 in. These mills would grind material with a top size of 8 to 10 mesh. Tertiary pebble mills could be charged with screened rock that would pass 3 x 3 in. and be retained on 1 x 1 in. and grind 35 to 48 mesh sands. Principles of Operation Media Size To operate a pebble mill efficiently it is imperative that great care be taken in screening the rock feed that is fed into the mill to round up into a range of pebble sizes that are suitable for grinding of the sands that are also being fed into the mill, having regard to the top size and the average size of such sands. Since most mill operators know from experience the correct size of steel balls to be used in a mill to handle different sizes of sand feed, it is convenient to relate the pebble size to a ball size. If the correct ball size is not known, it is relatively simple to conduct batch laboratory tests in 12- to 18-in. laboratory mills to determine the optimum size of steel ball. Also, Bond and others have published formulas for calculating the optimum ball size. When the correct size of the individual steel ball is known, then a pebble of the same weight will perform the same grinding if used in the proper size of mill and under the proper conditions, which will be defined later. This media size, as defined by the average weight of the individual pieces, is most important. The following tests will serve to clarify this point. Laboratory Tests Using Steel Balls or Pebbles. Several labora¬tory grinds were made to compare a given size and weight of steel ball with a pebble of the same weight but larger size, and of the same size but lighter weight. The following loads were used in the 12-in. laboratory mill: All 1 1/4-in. steel balls weighing 122 ± 10 g. All 1 3/4-in. pebbles weighing 123 ± 5 g. All 1 1/4-in. pebbles weighing 45 ± 3 g. To equalize capacity, the test with the steel balls was run only 34% as long as the tests with pebbles. In each case, 2,500 g of primary sands were ground at the optimum gravity for the media being tested at a speed 78 1/2 % of critical speed, and for 170, 340, and 680 revolu¬tions for the steel balls, and 500, 1,000, and 2,000 revolutions for the pebbles. Compliance standards for respirable dust which are reduced because of high quartz concentrations have become an industry-wide problem. Research on the physical and chemical character of quartz-classified particles in respirable coal mine dusts indicates that they may exist in intermixed layers or may be coated by clay or coal material. The relative amount of intermixing varies with the coal seam being mined. If most of the quartz particles of a mine dust are "pure," then the dust may have a high fibrogenic risk potential because of truly free silica and the compliance standard should be lowered. If, however, the quartz is locked inside another material matrix, or coated, a reduced compliance standard may not be appropriate.

The fluidized solids technique for the calcination of phosphate rock has been well established for over 10 years. This paper is intended to review the recent performance of many of the Dorr-Oliver FluoSolids* calciners. In addition, design features of these three compartment refrac¬tory construction reactors will be described and a comparison made with fuel requirements for single compartment calcination. Also presented will be certain, aspects of the use of the rock including a discussion of non sulfate sulfur in the rock. A system is described for producing a blended mixture of calcined and uncalcined rock.

This paper presents the process methods of beneficiating various copper-cobalt and copper-zinc ores mined by Gecamines in Zaire. Geology and mineralization of both sedimentary and vein type deposits are described with special emphasis on the production of oxide, dolomitic and sulfide concentrates. Description of different types of concentrators and their treatment methods are discussed for the production of sulfide, oxide and dolomitic concentrates. Production of concentrates, their consumption and stocks are briefly reviewed. Modernization of the concentrators with substantial investments on grinding, classification, flotation methods and tailings treatments are also discussed to improve the metallurgical efficiency of the concentrators with a view to improve the production of concentrates both qualitatively and quantitatively.

In a previous article1 the methyl stretching vibrations for a series of xanthates and amines were reported, and the frequency of the methyl stretching vibrations in a homologous series of the alkyl compounds were shown to decrease exponentially with chain length and approach a limiting value corresponding to that of saturated hydrocarbon beyond six or seven carbons. These observations were explained quantitatively by the theory of Goto and Takenaka2 who proposed an equation relating the frequency shifts to the inductive effect of polar groups. As a result, the alkyl groups in the shorter chain heteropolar compounds were interpreted as becoming somewhat polar, and a good correlation was observed between the CH3-stretching frequencies and such surface chemistry parameters as contact angle, surface tension lowering, solubility, and critical micelle concentration" The substitution of fluorine atoms, the most electronegative of all atoms, for the hydrogen atoms in alkyl groups was expected to reverse the direction of the inductive effect within a heteropolar molecule, and its effect on the C-F stretching frequency shifts and on some surface chemical properties became of interest. In a recent study the C-F stretching frequencies of a series of normal perfluorocarboxylic acids and a few 1,1' -dihydroperfluoro alcohols were determined as a function of chain length and the results were compared with the corresponding hydrocarbon analogs. Furthermore, the nature of the induced polarity in the hydrocarbon and fluorocarbon groups was investigated through surface potential measurements at the interfaces of air-aqueous solutions of normal butyl alcohol and of l,l'-dihydroperfluorobutyl alcohol and through differential capacity and electrocapillary measurements at the interfaces of mercury-aqueous solutions containing the above two alcohols. Experimental Normal perfluorocarboxylic acids and 1,1' -dihydroperfluoro alcohols were provided through the courtesy of the 3M Company, St. Paul, Minnesota. Normal butyl alcohol was purchased from Distillation Product Industries, Rochester, New York. A Perkin-Elmer Model 621 infrared spectrophotometer was used to investigate the spectra in the frequency region of 1200 to 1270 cm-l with frequency scale

Due to inefficiencies of the flotation process, significant effort has been recently provided to develop gravity separators for treating ultrafine particles. As a result, several enhanced gravity concentrators have been developed and commercialized. The Altair Centrifugal Jig is an enhanced gravity separator that provides relatively efficient separations on +25 µm size fractions. An experimental program conducted on -600 µm coal found that the Altair Jig reduced the ash content of the 600 x 44 µm from about 30% to 10% with an 86% combustible recovery value. The pulse water pressure, feed volumetric rate and ragging volume were found to be the key operating parameters affecting the separation performances obtained from the process. An extremely low density cut point of 1.54 and an Ep value of 0.08 were indicative of the high process efficiency values achievable by the Altair jig.

Design of the Bajo de la Alumbrera Project started in June 1995 and concentrate production commenced early in the Third Quarter of 1997. The project is situated in North-Western Argentina and is being developed by Minera Alumbrera Limited which is owned by MIM Holdings Limited of Australia (50%), North Limited of Australia (25%) and Rio Algom Limited of Canada (25%). This paper outlines the key features that were incorporated in the design from both process and plant layout perspectives. It explains the background of flowsheet and equipment selection for the plant. A feature of the flowsheet is that it incorporates gravity gold circuits in both primary and regrind circuits for recovery of gold to dore as well as in the copper concentrate product.

The successful technical demonstration of coarse coal slurry transportation at Consolidation Coal Company's Loveridge Mine in West Virginia suggests that it is now appropriate to seriously consider this technology in other applications, especially the transport of ' coal in surface mining. Early examination indicates that coarse coal slurry transport may be highly competitive with existing haulage systems, depending on a number of factors. These factors are not yet completely defined, but certainly will include production rates, coal physical and chemical properties, terrain, soil conditions, climate, water availability and quality, availability of skilled labor and other economic considerations impacting the existing haulage systems.

Over 2 million tons of steel furnace dusts are produced each year in the United States. Recycling of these dusts rather than disposal would conserve mineral resources, reduce land requirements for disposal, and decrease pollution. In addition to the iron content, the dusts contain appreciable amounts of zinc and lead. Removal of lead and zinc with simultaneous reduction of Iron oxide has been achieved by inert atmosphere roasting of carbon-containing pellets prepared from steel furnace wastes. High- and low-carbon wastes were blended to obtain mixtures with sufficient carbon to serve as a reductant during subsequent roasting. The mixtures were pelletized with the addition of bentonite and water, and the dried pellets were roasted in a stream of nitrogen at temperatures ranging from 900" to 1,150° C. Zinc and lead contents were reduced to the 0.1 percent level or less by roasting mixtures containing as little as 7 percent carbon for 1 hour at 1,100° C. ton metallization increases with available carbon content; 50 percent metallization is achieved with 7 percent carbon, 85 percent metallization with 12.5 percent carbon, and over 95 percent metallization when the pelletized mixtures contained in excess of 20 percent carbon.

As the mining industry begins efforts to examine the feasibility of extraterrestrial resource utilization, the extraction and processing of icy regolith containing water and other volatile materials will be the initial focus for future expansion of capabilities. Pure water is essential for human consumption, and a source of oxygen and hydrogen. The latter, along with the volatile materials, lend themselves to the creation of fuels that may be used for further space exploration at distances not currently feasible. For any extraterrestrial scoping project, the transport of materials to geoscientists remains virtually impossible. Therefore, analysis must be done in-situ, possibly millions of miles away from the nearest human. To address the need for geologic resource estimation in the absence of geoscientists, an infrared framework has been developed for the analysis of water ice content in simulants of permanently shaded lunar regolith. This framework relies on a convolutional neural network model for the rapid analysis of percent water ice content in samples, at which point standard geostatistical methods may be employed.

PREFACE Debris disposal can very often be a severe problem and major restriction on tunnel boring projects, especially for small diameter tunnels and in underground mines. Hydraulic transport could provide a suitable solution. Investigations have therefore been made in connection with a full-scale project of 4.8 km length and 2,3 m diameter, to obtain the required technical and economical data for planning an optimized transport system, e.g. for a tunnel boring drivage of 6 - 7 m diameter in underground coal mines. INTRODUCTION The Radau-Tunnel, chosen for the investigations, has been designed for transferring flood peaks between the rivers Radau and Grosse Romke in the Harz-Mountain of Lower Saxony. A DEMAG TVM 20/23 H tunnel boring machine was used to drive the tunnel on a rising gradient of 0,53 %. The rock consisted of shale and hornblende (55 %), granite (15 %), diabase (15 %), chert (8 %) and gabbro (7 %). The project has been sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology.

Flotation pulps with boron minerals such as colemanite and borax using primary amine collectors, e.g. dodecylamine, exhibit collector precipitation above a critical pH depending on the amine concentration. This was earlier attributed to the formation of a mine hydroborate. However, results from this current study indicate that the precipitate is dode-cylamine, rather than dodecylamine hydroborate. A systematic study involving solubility, zeta potential, microflotation, adsorption, and surface tension measurements is presented to elucidate the role of a mine precipitates in boron flotation systems.

Appreciation and awareness of the unique nature of mineral investment and ultimate development of a mine are crucial in promoting sustainable development. Special characteristics of mineral development include high capital intensive, long pre-production period, high risk, and the unavoidable ?economic? depletion. This paper examines ways to integrate these unique attributes of the mineral industry into the educational process, so that a properly advised and knowledgeable culture in terms of a sustainable mineral industry can be developed. Specific approaches are investigated in order to achieve this objective. These include a stochastic evaluation of a mineral investment proposal, adding a premium to the cost of capital that is used for valuation process, and internalizing incidental costs to the private cost function, thereby realizing the true (vs. apparent) marginal social cost of the proposed development. Undoubtedly, a total evaluation of any mineral project that accounts for both tangible and intangible parameters will contribute to sustainable development objectives. By incorporating the practical application of apparent theoretical topics such as risk, probability, and externality, and their relevance and impact on mineral lifecycle (prospecting, exploration, development, exploitation, use, and ultimate disposal) into the educational process, it is hoped that a generation of technocrats and decision makers that are familiar with and concerned about sustainable development will emerge.

The outlook for coal continued to improve in 1980, fueling expectations that a long-awaited boom is at hand. The surprising surge in coal exports contributed to the latest wave of optimism. Overseas exports hit 66 Mt in 1980, buoyed by a significant increase in demand for steam coal, up from 1979's 2.3 Mt to 15 Mt in 1980. US coal production rose 6.9% to 750 Mt in 1980 and total coal consumption increased 8.1% to about 725 Mt, due primarily to higher world oil prices and setbacks in the US nuclear power industry. Yet the industry is beset with problems-both internal and external. Although demand for US coal is growing, the industry's excess productive capacity is estimated at over 90 Mt/a. Public utilities, where real increases in coal consumption must come, are still moving slowly, blaming delays on antipollution equipment costs. Coal supplies are uncertain, subject to the vagaries of the UMW. For the sixth time since 1964, the coal industry and UMW failed to renew their labor contract without a national strike, reinforcing the perception held overseas that the US is not a reliable supplier. The expected boom in coal exports will, in part, depend on our ability to assure foreign buyers that US sources are dependable. The US industry is also plagued by inadequate facilities linking mines and consumers: inadequate rail systems, coal ports, and barges, For US producers to be competitive, ports must be expanded, rail lines improved, and harbors dredged to allow 136-kt ships to load coal. The im¬provements will require an enormous commitment and investment. Despite these major problems and unresolved issues, two factors continue to favor an increased reliance on coal as an energy source: abundant US reserves and coal's comparative price advantage. Coal's performance in the 1980s may at last exceed its promise.

"World-class manufacturing" (WCM) techniques can be applied in milling operations to substantially improve productivity and reduce costs. Through the use of "just-in-time" and "total quality control" practices, WCM methods establish an environment for continual and rapid improvement in all aspects of production operations, with particular gains in product quality, costs, flexibility, employee involvement, and responsiveness to customers. This paper examines WCM techniques that can be utilized specifically in the mill, and their influence on plant configuration, organization, and scheduling practices; equipment selection and maintenance methods; training; the role of supporting staff; and methods of data collection and analysis.

In attempting to assess the contributions of Antoine Gaudin to the profession which he illuminated for almost a half-century, we will need to examine a very broad canvas. He was active in three significant areas: as a teacher; in research, both through his own endeavors and those of his students; and as a consultant to the mining industry and to the Government. Beyond these specific contributions, there was the major personal influence he had on scores of students, friends, and colleagues in the profession. If a single measure of the man's contribution is to be found, it will be the extent and direction in which he influenced the practice of his profession. To find this we should examine the state of miner- al processing when he began his activities in the 1920's, the progress which has taken place over the past half-century, and the part his activities played in this advance. However, there is a provocative and broader examination which I have chosen to make instead. This is to examine the past century in mineral processing through the lives of three men who, by common agreement, stand on the heights, both in teaching and in their contributions to industry: Robert H. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart, and the man whose memory we honor this evening, Antoine M. Gaudin. Their careers, by coincidence, cover just a century. This is also AIME's first century, and the first century of mineral industry education in the United States. In fact, mineral processing itself on any significant scale in the country encompasses only a century and a quarter. BEGINNINGS OF PRACTICE IN THE U.S. Before the 1840qs, U.S. mining, except for coal and iron ore, was on a small scale and was confined to the eastern states, with processing practically nonexistent. The 1840's saw the beginning of Michigan native copper production, including ore dressing; the 18501s, iron ore production in Minnesota; and the 18601s, lead production and processing in Missouri. But the most explosive event was the California gold rush after 1848, which not only brought tens-of-thousands of fortune hunters to the West, but also catalyzed broad mining activities and processing within the following decades. Heavy media separation (HMS) is one of the most widely used gravity methods in the mineral industry. The feed is separated, according to the specific gravities, into two products; float (light) and sink (heavy) particles. The universal acceptance of the process is due to simplicity, efficiency and robustness for ease of control. However, if optimum separation is desired during the operation of heavy media plants, a delicate balance of a number of variables is essential. Among the variables, the two which are generally the most frequently checked and controlled are specific gravity and consistency of the medium. The latter is a function of the settling rate of the media. The medium is generally made up of finely ground ferrosilicon, magnetite, galena, shale, quartz sand, clay contaminants and water. The frequently present clay in the medium acts as a stabilizing agent, since the coarse heavy medium solids (called media) would quickly settle if they were mixed only in water. Clay concentration of the medium varies between 3-7% by height (1,2). Although clay is essential for reasonable media stability, clay concentration greater than 7-8% imparts too high a viscosity to the medium, and the feed cannot accurately stratify and therefore separate into the required products. To be on the safe side, plant operators clean the medium from most of the clays, and would rather work at a lower stability than have a very viscous medium on their hands. The most recent advance in the area of consistency control rlas made by the introduction of atomized (spherical) ferrosilicon (3). This extended the upper limit of the use of ground ferrosilicon from 3.3 to approximately 3.6, broadening the range of the optimum operating conditions. A viscosity control method was also worked out by the use of low cost additives which lower viscosity while retaining a favorable low setting rate (4). Recently (5) polymers have been successfully used in oil well drilling muds then the requirements were mainly to suspend and transport cuttings during the periodic shutdowns and dril1ings respectively. The following is a progress report on a continuing study being made by the Sanitary District for purposes of developing reliable data for predicting costs and progress on future tunnel contracts. All data available to date on five separate tunnel contracts has been analyzed. All were machine-mined in soft ground, all used steel ribs and wood lagging and finished inside diameters varying from 5'6" to 6'6". Basic data regarding progress per shift, hours mined per shift, hours of downtime per shift, cause of downtime and type of soil mined were reported by the District's resident engineer at the job site. Figure 1, Weekly Mining Report is an example of the form used. Data regarding manpower and equipment used during tunnelling operations was also supplied by the resident engineer during the course of construction. Soil type being mined was verified by the resident engineer during construction, by visual observation, and compared with data listed on a previously prepared soil profile. The validity of the concept of mine resistance in ventilation systems is examined. Mine resistance is the proportionality constant relating the head generated by a fan and the quantity flowing through it when the fan is connected to a mine circuit. It is the total effect of all branches in the mine ventilation circuit. Its importance lies in the fact that for new mine projections, and in the extensions of existing mines, ventilation calculations are usually based upon adjustments of the mine resistance. In ventilation circuits with regulation, and/or with multi-fans, simple adjustments of the mine resistance curve do not lead to correct solutions. A ventilation system consists of several interconnected subsystems where one subsystem behavior affects that of the others, and the total system. Through a series of simple but realistic examples, the authors will demonstrate the importance of the systems concept in mine ventilation, and its practical application to coal mine ventilation planning.
