This paper presents an experimental method to determine the degree of gangue entrainment in mechanical flotation cells and proposes new and inexpensive methods to lessen it. The applicability of froth washing and vibration was studied in laboratory, pilot plant, and plant scales. The effect of wash water on metallurgical performance was tested with various streams from the Falconbridge Strathcona mill at laboratory, pilot, and plant scales, with the 2nd cleaner at the Eastmaque Kirkland Lake mill, and with the 2nd and 3rd zinc and 3rd and 4th copper cleaners at Les Mines Selbaie mill. It was found that gangue recovery was closely related to water recovery in all systems. Wash water at an optimum superficial rate from 0.03 to 0.07 cm/s reduced entrainment by anywhere from 30X to 70X. Wash water can be further assisted by mechanical and ultrasonic vibration of the froth. A further rejection of 10 to 20X becomes possible. As a result of this work, a number of plants in Canada and in the United States have evaluated and/or are now using froth washing.

For more cost effective strata control, a fundamental understanding of the behavior of the support system is needed. To assist in this understanding for shield supports, behavior of a four-leg shield design used on a soft floor in an operating longwall system is presented. The shield was constructed having a split base and a split caving shield. Attention is focused on other-than-normal loading on the canopy and its effect on deformation of the lemniscate links. Examples of the typical bending and twisting deformations are given. Schematics of the canopy, caving shield, and lemniscates showing important forces and moments are presented. Approximate minimum values of the forces and moments are calculated. The need for use of more inclusive three-dimensional design techniques is demonstrated.

INTRODUCTION In uranium miners, a causal relationship between exposure of the lung to high levels of alpha radiation and the consequential induction of bronchial carcinoma is now well-established (Wagoner, et al., 1965). Quantitation of this cause-effect association presents considerable difficulty, however, as the result of various confounding factors such as the contributing effects of smoking and/or arsenic exposure (Archer, Gillam, and Wagoner, 1976), normal metabolic variability and, perhaps most important of all, the absence of accurate radon/radon daughter exposure data. Estimates of cumulative lung exposures suffer from inaccuracy due to critical factors such as 1) unknown ventilation rates; 2) difficulties in obtaining representative mine air samples; 3) the variable character and magnitudes of the exposure sources; and 4) specific differences in metabolism and job histories that exist among miners. It was with considerable enthusiasm, therefore, that investigators readily embraced the idea of using skeletal burdens of the relatively longlived descendants of radon and its short-lived daughters, i.e., 210 Pb and 210Po (Archer, et al., 1968), to provide a measure of cumulative past exposure wherein the body acts as an integrating dosimeter. Early studies considered excretion rates of 210Pb and 210Po in urine, blood and hair (Sultzer and Hursh, 1954; Black, et al., 1968; Jaworowski, 1965; Bell and Gilliland, 1964) as well as their concentrations in bone samples, if and when they became available (Blanchard, Archer, and Saccomanno, 1969). These methods were ultimately complemented by in vivo, whole-body counting techniques using low background, NaI-Csl(T1) detectors (Eisenbud, et al., 1969). By this latter method, it would be possible to measure the skeletal burden of 210Pb directly, thereby avoiding the many difficulties associated with the relation between nuclide excretion rates and body burden. The rationale was simple; by knowing the skeletal burden of 210Pb it should be possible, by the judicious use of an applicable metabolic model, to estimate the cumulative lung exposure to alpha-emitting radon daughters (Fig. 1). Various models that were consequently constructed, however (Fisher, 1969), all suffered from the same limitation, i.e., the assumption that the source of 210 Pb in the skeleton and the source of lung exposure to the short-lived radon daughters were simply related and, if not, were at [ ] least not too variable (Raabe, 1970). By now, the difficulty with this assumption has been recognized and more sophisticated modeling techniques have been attempted which presumably present a more realistic picture of exposure conditions (Holtzman and Rundo, 1981). There is, nevertheless, the pessimistic view that due to the variety and variability (in time as well as in character) of sources that may exist for the origin of 210Pb in bone, it may [never] be possible to estimate past lung exposures accurately by an indirect, predictive model. For example, the origin of 210 Pb in the skeleton may include such sources as: 1) the decay of short-lived 222Rn daughters, inhaled and ingested; 2) the decay of 222Rn dissolved in body fluids and tissues; 3) directly from 210 Pb present in air, inhaled and ingested; and 4) 210Pb from non-occupational sources, e.g., food, water, smoking and endogenous 226Ra. The contribution of each of these sources may vary depending upon specific site conditions such as ventilation and mining operation. This paper presents the development of ultrasonic grinding technology for material and mineral processing. The principles underlying this new technology, as well as their implementation in two laboratory scale devices are described in detail. Ultrasonic grinding experiment results are discussed with respect to operating variables and the achieved product sizes. Special attention has been given to the electrical energy consumption of the grinder, and an attempt to compare its efficiency with tumbling mills has been made. A mechanical system capable of measuring the specific grinding energy is also described.

A vital aspect of environmental impact assessment for surface mining operations is the determination of potential effects on water resources. This topic has been the subject of much recent concern, controversy and legislation. As increasing data become available regarding the types of hydrologic effects that may be anticipated, methods for safe guarding our water resources can be refined. In view of our current energy situation, the need to develop coal re- sources in a timely and economic manner is apparent. The challenge to the mining industry is to develop these resources in a manner that is also compatible with the beneficial use of water resources in mining regions. For this reason, thorough evaluation of the hydrology of potential mining areas in consideration of proposed mining processes and relevant legal criteria is essential. While pre-mining hydrologic investigations often suggest generalized potential effects, a more reliable method for evaluating specific potential effects is to establish and maintain a hydrologic monitoring program. Such a program must be carefully designed to suit the specific project and its location. This paper describes an approach for selection of criteria for designing a monitoring program for a proposed coal surface mining operation and gasification plant in southwest North Dakota. Woodward-Clyde Consultants (WCC), recently prepared an environ- mental impact report for the ANG Coal Gasification Company (ANG), a subsidiary of the American Natural Gas Company. The mining will be carried out by The North American Coal Corporation (NACCO). Preparation of the report provided the opportunity for the development of a sensitive and economical monitoring program which would function as a baseline hydrological data gathering network as well as act an an early detection system for hydrologic effects of the proposed mining.

A 25-mm diameter dense-medium cyclone was tested to investigate the effects of geometry and operating conditions on cyclone performance when processing -150 I'm coal. The emphasis was on examining those variables (e.g., flow rate and inlet velocity) which impact the separation kinetics (specifically the number of g's and the mean retention time) and the occurrence of apparent bypass. Apparent bypass, indicated by partition curve "tails", results from the short circuiting of the feed coal to one or both of the product streams and represents a loss and/or contamination of the clean coal. This paper presents the results for this series of tests.

The role of bacterial oxidation in the mining industry is becoming more widely accepted. Western Australia has accepted the technology as a pretreatment for refractory gold concentrates more readily than most. The third of such plants has been completed at the Y ouanmi Gold Mine. This is situated approxi­mately 500 kilometres north east of Perth, in the Yilgarn mineral field. Y ouanmi concentrates are produced from underground ore and contain arsenopyrite and pyrite as the main sulphide miner­als. Refractory gold from this deposit is generally associated with the arsenopyrite portion of the material. Gold Mines of Australia Ltd ("GMA") initiated pilot scale testing at the BacTech premises in November 1993. The decision by GMA to use BacTech's technology was announced in February 1994. Design and construction commenced at this time. Bacterial growth on site was initiated in July 1994 and continuous opera­tion began in the October. Concentrate was added at 0.5 tonnes per hour and this has increased to 1 tonne per hour.

The process of flotation is an extremely important solids separation technique employed in a wide variety of industrial process applications. Froth flotation is practiced in the coal industry to recover fines produced during the mining and cleaning of coal. A recent review article by Aplan (1) covers the processing variables encountered in the flotation of coal and the variety of chemicals and operating conditions which affect recovery. Numerous engineering and scientific studies have been performed with the goal of providing semifundamental laws of flotation behavior for improved screening of flotation chemicals, better equipment scale-up factors, etc. Often the results of such work are expressed in the form of mathematical models (e.g. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) which are potentially useful for evaluating (simulating) on paper such alternatives as possibles process operating or configuration changes, the effects of ore and reagent changes, etc. It appears to be commonly accepted that a complete scientific/engineering characterization of flotation is immensely complicated and not sufficiently developed at the present to accurately predict (or understand) many important industrial facets of flotation. Thus, one is often reduced to detailed experimental characterization in both the laboratory and plant in order to fully evaluate flotation changes or alternatives. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a method of batch laboratory data characterization that is useful in evaluating flotation chemical reagents including froth flotation of coal. The approach consists of running a series of time-recovery curves in a batch float cell followed by the computer curve fitting of this data to a series of mathematical models based on semi-physical reasoning. The unknowns or parameters of these models are then optimally chosen so as to best fit the experimental data. The conveyor belt is the basic building block of a broad range of material handling applications in modern mining systems. The mining plans and site conditions dictate basic system requirements but this is only a part of total design evaluation. The total system in the typical mining situation can encompass all the activities from the excavators at the mining face to the processing plant, site loadout facilities and/or a power plant. The number of alternative configurations which must be evaluated including subsystems and components is limited only by analytical time and creativity. The constraints and issues which must be addressed continue to expand, driven by reliability, environmental impact and cost competitiveness. All of the system requirements must be translated into specifications for costing, final design and construction.

Energy West Mining Co. (EWMC) has implemented a geologic program for improving stability and support requirements along deep two-entry longwall gateroads at its Deer Creek Mine operations located near Huntington, UT. Together with geotechnical monitoring and concurrent review of mine seismicity in cooperation with MTI staff, it has become possible to improve longwall layout designs for two seam extraction of the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon seams. The geologic program consists of surface and in-mine exploration drilling, surface and in-mine geologic mapping, rock mechanics testing and detailed measurements of changes in depositional and structural conditions during development of every longwall gateroad. The geotechnical program consists of underground measurements at seven locations in two neighboring mining districts located in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon coal seams under moderate to deep cover. Within the last five years, additional measurements, including data on seismicity and face conditions, have been incorporated into the data collection program for verifying the in situ coal strength and load transfer mechanisms for improving two-seam designs and support systems.

Traditionally, molybdenum and vanadium have been used chiefly as alloy metals in steel. They impart similar characteristics to most steels, and to some extent one can be substituted for the other. In the United States during the 1950's the production of steel increased about 5 percent, and the reported consumption of both of these alloy metals in steel increased some 40 percent. In Europe during the 1950's the production of steel in¬creased nearly 100 percent. Data on the actual consumption of these alloy metals in European steels are not available, but production and trade records show that the European supplies of molybdenum increased about 150 percent and those of vanadium about 350 percent during the 1950's. If most of the molybdenum supplies in Europe are being added to steel, as seems likely, then the European steel industry has nearly caught up with the United State in the rate of consumption of molybdenum in steel. The vanadium supplies, on the other hand, are puzzling--unless Europe is adding mach more vanadium to steel than is done in the United States, it seems reasonable to assume that other uses are consuming moderately large quantities of this metal or that appreciable amounts of it are being transshipped from Europe. To the extent that a changing volume of supply signifies a changing pattern of use, the increased demand for molybdenum and vanadium in Europe should be of interest to domestic producers and consumers of these metals.

Turkey has important celestite reserves in Sivas. These reserves have gypsum and/or calcite as gangue minerals. Celestite-calcite ore cannot be concentrated by gravity methods due to the low efficiency of gravity methods in fine sizes. Research was tried to concentrate celestite to a market grade by flotation. Parameters such as pH, particle size, dosage and types of collector and depressant were examined. Cyanamid A-845 and Na-oleate combination as collector, sodium silicate as depressant, and Aerofroth-65 as frother were found as the optimum flotation reagents. By applying 3-stage cleaning, a concentrate assaying 95,34 % SrS04 was obtained with 84,93 % recovery.

Property sales and acquisition are prominent features of today's coal industry. Before selling or buying a site, a company must know the property's economic net worth. Any evaluation of economic net worth would be inadequate if determinations of a property's environmental liabilities and costs were omitted. Short-term and long-term costs can result from liabilities related to reclamation, water treatment, subsidence, and hazardous waste disposal. A structured, interdisciplinary approach can aid in the delineation, summation, and scheduling of these costs and liabilities.

The U.S. Department of Energy is supporting the engineering development of three advanced physical coal cleaning technologies--selective agglomeration, advanced flotation, and advanced cycloning--capable of significantly reducing the pyritic-sulfur content of U. S. coals. The objective of this activity is to provide the coal production and electric-utility industries with a cost-effective option for addressing the SO2 emission reductions required by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. A secondary objective is to evaluate the potential of advanced coal cleaning for removing trace elements that are precursors to the formation of hazardous air pollutants. This paper will summarize the status of the three advanced physical coal cleaning engineering development projects.

Abandoned uranium mines in the southern Black Hills of South Dakota were sampled for uranium, radium, and rare earth elements during 1992 and 1993. Analyses of water samples from several shallow ponds in the mine pits showed pH values between 3 and 4 with uranium concentrations between 1600 and 2600 ppb. Rare earth elements and their respective isotopes were analyzed with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer and were referenced to a shale normalization pattern. All samples showed an enrichment in the middle rare earth elements. Rare earth levels often were greater than 0.2 ppm. At one site, the concentrations of lanthanides were 150,000 times above background levels. While the southern Black Hills have long been known for rich uranium ore deposits, these analyses show that significant levels of rare earth elements also are present, indicating that the potential exist for future development.

Selective flocculation was used to produce superclean zinc concentrate with minimized silica contamination. Research was carried out on a flotation concentrate from the Jersey Miniere Zinc Company (JMZ) in Gordonsville, Tennessee. The material was first dispersed with sodium silicate and then causticized tapioca starch was used to selectively flocculate the sphalerite, leaving the silica in suspension. This technique has been applied commercially to iron ore beneficiation but has never been used for processing zinc. The feed material assayed 0.45% Si02. Use of 0.56 kg/tonne (1.13 lb/st) of sodium silicate and 0.070 kg/tonne (0.141 lb/st) of causticized tapioca starch resulted in 98.2% zinc recovery in a purified zinc concentrate assaying 66.0% Zn and 0.24% silica. The present target level for silica contamination in JMZ zinc concentrates is 0.3% Si02. This work has shown that selective flocculation offers a potential method for cleaning flotation concentrates, particularly where low silica products are required.

"Salicyl hydroxamic acid (SHA) adsorption on two rare earth oxides, lanthanum and yttrium, was studied. Adsorption at both surfaces occurred in two stages. Initially, the monovalent anionic collector appears to adsorb significantly and instantaneously in stage one and then becomes sluggish in stage two presumably because the initial stage passivated the surface. By comparison, adsorption during the sluggish second stage with lanthanum oxide did not stop but with yttrium oxide essentially stopped. Surface monolayer formation could not be observed in either of the two cases. Both stages appear to be due to multilayer formation of a surface precipitate as proven by Raman Spectroscopy for lanthanum oxide but inferred for yttrium oxide. Unlike the use of octyl hydroxamate as stated in the literature, increasing temperatures do not increase adsorption such that flotation of rare earths with SHA may be performed at room temperature leading to improved recoveries as well as significant energy savings. INTRODUCTION Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are comprised of the 15 lanthanides along with scandium and yttrium. The REEs with lower atomic numbers are relatively more abundant and are categorized as light REEs. On the contrary, the REEs with high atomic numbers are less abundant and referred to as heavy REEs. They are not really “rare” and, in fact, some of them are quite abundant in the Earth’s crust; it’s just that they “rarely” exist in concentrated deposits but rather are found dilute and practically everywhere. REEs share very similar physico-chemical properties but, because many of these properties are unique, they have gained enormous importance in recent times making several critical and strategic pending their use. For example, REEs have found extensive application in phosphor coatings, magnetics, and automobile cracking catalysts. Early technology was not advanced enough to produce commodity level production of the REEs and can be attributed to REE-bearing ores containing many rare earth minerals (REMs), not just one. In this regard, there are numerous REMs but bastnaesite, xenotime and monazite are considered to be the most common. Bastnaesite is a fluorocarbonate whereas the other two are phosphates. The separation of the individual REE-bearing minerals from the ores is not an easy task since they also exhibit very similar properties. Consequently, when flotation is used, it is done to produce bulk REM concentrates. For REM flotation, it is well established that octyl hydroxamate is more selective than fatty acid collectors (Pradip and Fuerstenau, 1983 and 1991). Liu et al. (2006) indicated that hydroxamates are the most common collectors for REMs. Pavez et al. (1996) studied the adsorption of oleic fatty acid and octyl hydroxamate on REM surfaces. Cui et al. (2012) studied the interaction of octyl hydroxamate with various REMs surfaces using various spectroscopic techniques such as XPS, FT-IR and Raman along with electron microscopy and concluded that such techniques offer ample information to establish adsorption mechanisms. Ren et al. (1997) studied napthalenic hydroxamic acid as a unique collector for flotation of REMs from bastnaesite ore and indicated that more selective collectors were needed. From these studies, it is clear that the quest of more selective collectors is essential but understanding how they adsorb at mineral surfaces is prerequisite to improving flotation performance."

Operators are often challenged with the management of water throughout the life cycle of a mine. High water levels can lead to physical or chemical instability of water-retaining structures. Operators need to predict changes in water levels to make timely operational decisions and plan for contingencies, particularly in remote legacy mines. A closed mine in northern Canada with no permanent on-site personnel had a simple water balance model that was effective for decades to inform annual water treatment operations. In recent years challenging water quality and more stringent effluent quality criteria has strained those treatment operations and led to more water being stored. Additionally, the region has experienced more precipitation and higher water levels, which have triggered emergency response activities. A calibrated probabilistic model was used to provide enhanced prediction capabilities and to identify key sensitivities in the water balance for monitoring. A several-year case study shows the value that this modelling tool provided for mobilizing personnel and performing response actions, particularly the inclusion of probability paired with forecasted pond water levels. Annual drawdown targets were subsequently established which provided more certainty in scheduling of annual treatment operations

Currently, empirical models are used for predicting the hydrocyclone performance in terms of capacity, cut size (d50,c), water split and partition curve. These models, for example those of Lynch and Plitt, have been developed and checked for hydro cyclones with diameters larger than four inches. For smaller diameter hydrocyclones little empirical modelling has been done. This paper reports extended experimental research on small hydrocyclones. For these cyclones, the suitability of existing empirical models has been checked and their accuracy compared. Modifications of the existing models equations are proposed, improving their predictive capability for the small cyclones performance.

The discovery of the Delbridge massive sulphide deposit in the Noranda district of Quebec resulted from an appreciation of the significance of a mercury leakage halo as a litho-chemical pathfinder to blind ore, coupled to its location relative to a geologically inferred ore-bearing horizon within complex volcanic stratigraphy. Systematic sampling of micro-fractures present in outcrops delineated a diagnostic anomaly, drawing attention to an area considered prospective for buried ore. The massive sulphide deposit was subsequently found to be blind and topped at the 110 metre level.
