Mill crushing drive systems are essential to cement producers. With the increased emphasis on operating efficiency, it is vital that these systems be dependable and reliable. No one needs the costs or headaches associated with unscheduled downtime or inefficient machinery operation. A reliable drive system starts with the proper selection of the ring, or girth, gear and continues through proper maintenance. Ideally, selecting the right girth gear brings together the gear manufacturer, the system designer and the end user. The gear manufacturer must know the details of the application, the demands that will be placed on the gear and the nature of the equipment to be driven. Similarly, the user and the system designer must be familiar with the variables that affect gear drive performance and service. For example, an application that places a torque load on the drive in excess of its rated capacity will result in gear tooth distress and, in severe cases, breakage.

Froth flotation is a widely used, cost effective coal cleaning process. However, its high process efficiency is limited to a narrow particle size range between approximately 50 to 600 µm for coal and 10 to 100 µm for minerals. Beyond this range, the efficiency of froth flotation decreases sharply, especially for difficult-to-float coal fines of weak hydrophobicity (e.g., oxidized coal). This study was aimed at enhancing recovery of an Illinois fine coal sample using a flotation column featuring a hydrodynamic cavitation nanobubble generator. Nanobubbles that are mostly smaller than 1 µm can be formed selectively on hydrophobic coal particles from dissolved air in fine coal slurry. Results indicate that combustible recovery of a -150 µm coal was increased by 5-50% for different size fractions in presence of nanobubbles, depending on process operating conditions. Other major advantages of the nanobubble flotation process include lower collector dosage and air consumption since nanobubbles are produced from air naturally dissolved in water and they act as a secondary collector on particle surfaces, thereby resulting in considerably lower operating costs. Once every three years the eyes of the construction and mining industry?s turn to Munich, Germany for the bauma trade fair and exhibition. From April 19-25, Messe München International (MMI) will host the 29th edition of this massive show that, despite the recent recession and global financial struggles, has grown yet again. The show, which is completely booked, will take place on a record 555,000 m2 (5.9 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. More than 3,000 exhibitors are expected to make use of this event. To prepare for the show that highlights some of the largest and most impressive construction and mining equipment in the world, Messe München began working months in advance on getting the infrastructure on the open-air site ready, in time for the arrival of the gigantic machinery exhibits, which started to arrive in March. Part of the preparations include a new entrance at the northwest corner of the exhibition center that was built to regulate visitor flow better. This should help with bauma considering that in 2007 more than 500,000 visitors passed through the gates. ?Although in 2010 the construction machinery sector in many markets worldwide will be recovering only slowly from the recession, we are pleased to report that we are seeing strong demand for exhibition space. This shows that exhibitors regard participation in the world?s leading trade fair bauma as a must, although many are at present having to make cuts in their advertising and trade-fair budgets. We have been particularly surprised by the strong demand for space from exhibitors from markets like China, India and Turkey. The fair is fully booked and many more companies are on the waiting list,? said Eugen Egetenmeir, managing director of Messe München. More than 50 percent of the exhibitors at bauma 2010 come from countries outside of Germany. While the show?s primary focus is on the construction section, it is not as if the mining sector will be difficult to find. With some of the largest equipment in world on display in section C2 (Fig. 1), the mining industry is sure to be well-represented.

Large is the applicable adjective here. The largest hydraulic shovel in the world, the largest copper mine in the world, the largest copper producing company in the world. The O&K RH 300 hydraulic excavator has been put into service to move overburden and mine ore at the Chuquicamata open pit mine of the Chilean state copper mining company, Corporation Nacional de Corbre de Chile (Codelco). A large shovel: Equipped with a 26-m3 (34-yd') rock shovel, the RH 300 is able to fill a 170-t (187-st) truck in three passes with cycle times of 30 seconds. A large mine: At present, the Chuquicamata pit is 4 km (2.5 miles) long, 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, and 520 m (1700 ft) deep from rim to bottom bench. The current 450 kt/d (496,000 stpd) of material mined will increase to 600 kt/d (661,000 stpd) when the expanded production rate is reached in 1989. (Chuqui Expansion details, p. 20). A large mining company: Codelco's total output from its two open pit and three underground copper mines is more than 1.1 Mt/a (1.2 million stpy) of copper. This makes Codelco by far the largest copper producer in the world. It accounts for about 15% of the Western World's copper requirements. Chuquicamata is located in the hot and arid Atacama desert of northern Chile. The mine is located 240 km (150 miles) northeast of the port city of Antofagasta. Mine elevation is 2700 m (8850 ft). Chuquicamata's known reserves of oxide and sulfide ores amount to more than 450 Mt (496 million st) of contained copper. There are also reserves of more then 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of contained molybdenum. Originally, Chuquicamata was a rail pit. The shovels loaded rail cars hauled by locis on tracks along the benches. During the 1970s, the rail transport was replaced by truck haulage. Crushing and conveying rock waste in the pit is the latest step in the continuing evolution of more productive and economical methods of materials movement. In 1990, the in-pit crushing plant will be in operation. The waste will be mainly transported out of the pit on belt conveyors rather than trucks. The system will incorporate a 9.6-kt/h (10,600-stph) semi-portable crushing station, a 14-km (8.7-mile) conveyor using 1.8 m (6 ft) wide heavy duty belts, and a tripper-spreader to stack the waste dumps. Since Chuqui went into production in 1915, more than 2.5 Gt (2.8 billion st) of material has been excavated. This includes nearly 1.7 Gt (1.9 billion st) of ore from which some 16.4 Mt (18 million st) of copper has been recovered. The Chuquicamata porphyry type ore body is an altered and fractured intrusive granodiorite or quartz-monzonite porphyry that carries the mineralization. The action of ground water on primary sulfide minerals in geo¬logic time has created oxide ores and a zone of secondary enrich¬ment. The oxides occur above the sulfide zone and are also mixed with the upper parts of the latter. At Chuquicamata, the current grade of 1.5% copper is expected to decline to about 1% by 1995. To maintain metal production at cur¬rent levels, it will be necessary to increase ore production rates by about 50%, as mentioned, to 153

Maintenance strategy selection plays a significant role in mining design. The nature of maintenance strategy selection is a complex multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem including both tangible and intangible parameters which are often in conflicting with each other. Moreover, when decision makers are uncertain in determining and defining the ratings and the weights of alternatives and criteria respectively, fuzzy theory provides an appropriate tool to handle the existing uncertainties. In this paper, a new fuzzy MCDM method based on the concepts of TOPSIS and AHP was proposed to evaluate the feasible maintenance strategy. The linguistic terms are employed to assess the ratings and weights. Fuzzy AHP is utilized to calculate the weights of the evaluation criteria; then, the rankings of alternatives are computed based on fuzzy sets theory and TOPSIS. A real world case study is presented to illustrate a potential application of the proposed model.

INTRODUCTION The Tokyo metropolitan region, inclusive of the three neighboring prefectures (Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama), has the highest concentration of population and industry in Japan; with an area of 13,500 km2 or only 3.6 percent of the national land, but a population of 31.8 million or 26 percent of the national total, and a Gross Regional Product (GRP) of146 trillion yen (US$1.33 trillion) or 36 percent of the overall GDP of Japan as of 1990. Tokyo Bay, embraced by the metropolitan region as shown in Figure 1 (a), (b), is open to the Pacific Ocean as a marine gateway and is ringed by large cities and coastal industrial zones together with port facilities, all constituting a concentration of prime importance for socio-economic activities. The Trans-Tokyo Bay Highway (TTB highway), which crosses Tokyo Bay and provides a direct transportation link between the west and east sides of the bay, has long been a sort of “dream-come-true” project in Japan. As shown in Figure 2, linked to the Tokyo Bay Shore Highway, Metropolitan Inter-city Expressway, Tokyo Outer Ring Road, Tateyama Express-way, and others, it will play an important role as an integral part of the regional highway network to help promote spatial redistribution and multi polarization of urban functions, thus strengthening cooperation between cities and restructuring the metropolitan region. The TTB Highway is a project of 15.1 km in length designed as a toll highway to cross the bay by tunnel and bridge, and will require ten years to complete at a total cost of more than 1,438 billion yen (US$13.077 billion). Following more than 20 years of feasibility and environmental assessment studies, construction of this giant offshore highway project commenced in May 1989 as the first large-scale highway project with private-sector participation under the prevailing Road Law in Japan, and is now steadily proceeding toward the goal of completion in fiscal1997. This report outlines the entire TTB Highway project, including the waterproofing measures against high water pressure and the rapid construction method applied in the construction of shield tunnel sections.

We have searched and analyzed several modern technologies aiming at the best applications of environmental management, the studying of quarrying ? mining as well as the excavation sites ? utilization ? rehabilitation. We have used long-range reflectorless laser surveying systems, so as to achieve the fastest and most accurate surveying of the extractive work sites. We also used them, in order to collect field data, measure distances, surveying monitoring stations and environmental parameters ? data. Furthermore these systems can make the field work quite faster, more reliable and credible and have low cost in collecting data even in dangerous and non-approachable areas. We have used and processed on the field data in G.I.S. applications, in order to create 2-D and 3-D digital ground models. These G.I.S. applications present the existing relief and the management of the final stage of the area. The suggested techniques and works needed, for reclamation and utilization of the areas, could be tried, evaluated and well presented. The evolution and utilization of these ?smart? modern tools for the effective environmental management of quarrying ? mining ? extractive activity sites, will be presented by using case histories from the Hellenic territory.

Part of a major sewer expansion for the City of Columbus, Ohio. The Big Walnut Outfall Augmentation Sewer?Part II (BWOAS) consists of 13,200 feet of tunnel of 12-foot tunnel passing mainly through glacial deposits with a water head of up to 2 bar. A Lovat RME167SE was used to drive this tunnel with steel fiber reinforced precast segmental liner used for support. This paper will discuss the concepts for tunnel sup-port and TBM selection, the problems encountered with the TBM sealing systems and the solutions used to repair the machine.

The mining industry has searched for a message that will resonate with the public while focusing on the industry’s positive contributions to society. So far, environmental groups remain unconvinced and the public is still largely uninformed. In the authors’ opinion, a number of recent events and experiences have converged to help shape a more effective public communication on mining’s important role. This article presents a perspective on coal’s role in sustaining society by anchoring the message in a transparent way, including a material flow analysis, that links coal’s impacts across a range of social and environmental aspects. Past and continuing image problems In her 1994 paper, Nancy Bingham, with Caterpillar, outlined what the public thought about mining. Based on extensive interviews, the following results were found: • The public believed mining harms the environment. • The public believed mining harms people in nearby communities. • The public believed mining exploits workers. • The public believed mining has little personal benefit to the individual.

Introduction Chloride leaching of sulfidic ores has been known about for 100 years. It is recognized as a highly efficient process to produce concentrated leach solutions. Despite this, chloride leaching found little practical application until recently because of the highly corrosive nature of concentrated chloride solutions. This situation changed with the advent of modern construction materials such as GRP, polypropylene, butyl rubber, etc. And in the past 20 years, research has burgeoned in the area of chloride hydrometallurgy. The research impetus stemmed from the belief that chloride leaching can provide an alternative to smelters for treating conventional copper concentrates. In addition, chloride leaching was thought to be suitable for on-site refining of copper at small tonnage operations located in remote areas. And chloride leaching was seen as a logical choice for treating unusual or complex concentrates that smelters could not handle. Underpinning these beliefs is the attraction of chloride-based hydrometallurgical processes for sulfidic ores. Sulfur is liberated in the environmentally acceptable elemental form rather than as sulfur dioxide. Consequently, sulfidic copper ores have received much attention. A review of Edmiston in 1984 describes 12 chloride-based processes. All managed to progress past the "laboratory beaker" stage of evaluation. In nine of these processes, copper is recovered electrolytically. Key features of these processes are summarized in Table 1. Table 1 shows that the processes must include a copper solvent-extraction step. Only these processes produce a clean copper electrolyte capable, with no further refining, of directly producing high quality cathode copper. The ICI/Elkem process is the exception here. The rest of these processes use o-hydroxyaryloxime reagents for the solvent extraction of copper and are constrained by the performance of these reagents. This is governed by hydrogen ion concentration (Equation 1). The practical result is that only relatively dilute copper solutions can be treated (Canmet, Phelps Dodge), or careful pH control or adjustment is necessary (Minimet Recherche, B.H.A.S.). This negates one of the attractive features of chloride leaching - its ability to produce very concentrated copper solutions, up to 40-45 gl-1. [ ] In all four processes using o¬hydroxyaryloxime extractants, solvent extraction transfers the copper from the chloride to the sulfate medium. To minimize cross-contamination of the two anions, the loaded organic solvent has to be scrubbed to remove the chloride ion. This represents an additional complication in the solvent extraction circuit. And it

From the massive equipment that moves the earth, to the parts that keep the equipment moving, it was all on display for more than 35,000 people who at-tended MinExpo 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 22-24. In the largest show in the illustrious history of MinExpo, the success of the recent commodity boom was reflected in the more than 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of floor space that was jam-packed with nearly 1,300 vendors. Among them, the makers of the industry?s largest machines, displaying their latest and greatest trucks, shovels, excavators, drills and other mining equipment. During the nearly decade-long commodities boom, equipment makers have worked hard to keep up with demand while also investing heavily in research and development. The beneficiaries of this R&D is the end user who saw first-hand at MinExpo 2008 the many advances that have already been made in safety, comfort and productivity from all the manufacturers. R&D has also helped spark more talk of automation, which is being used already at some of the world?s largest mines. Caterpillar and Komatsu have worked with the technology in surface mining and Bucyrus and Sandvik are among the industry leaders applying the science of automation to underground mines. Technology has in-creased greatly since the idea of moving massive equipment remotely was first knocked around and the idea of entire fleets operating around the clock seems to be getting closer to reality. But, until that happens, MinExpo attendees were treated to a show that featured some of the most impressive current machines the industry has to offer. In the largest booth space of the convention, Caterpillar (www.cat.com) displayed the culmination of an ambitious $280-million dollar investment, with the introduction of its new mining fleet of four new trucks. The F-series was un-veiled with common features in safety, cabs, engines, frames and bodies and Tier 2 compliant engines. The F series also features a return to the electric drive option. ?When our customers asked us for improvements to our mining trucks, we responded by making a record investment in every single truck in our line, as well as the increased capacity to produce more of them,? said Cater-pillar group president Stu Levenick. ?New technologies have allowed us to make trucks more reliable, easier to maintain and more friendly to the operator and to the environment.? The 793-series is in the 218- to 227-t (240- to 250-st) class that will be available in both mechanical (793F) and electric (793F ac) versions. The electric drive-only 313- t (345-st) 795F was also introduced, while the flagship 797B truck is in the process of being replaced by the new 797F mechanical drive, maintaining its 345- to 363-t (380- to 400-st) target payload. Completing Caterpillar?s new mining truck line will be new versions of the 785 and 789 mechanical drive trucks. The next generation of trucks will be phased into production during the next two years, with the Cat ac drive models expected to go into production in late 2010. Economical dewatering of ultra-fine (minus 74 m) clean coal slurry produced in column flotation to a 20 percent or lower moisture level will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced fine coal cleaning processes. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate efficiency and effectiveness of three dewatering techniques, namely, hyperbaric, vacuum and screen bowl centrifuge, in dewatering of ultra-fine (D50 -25 m) clean coal slurry produced by the 'Ken-Flote' columns operating at the Powell Mountain Coal Company, St. Charles, Virginia. he hyperbaric filter using 3 bar pressure and 1650 cake formation angle, provided a filter cake with 23.6 percent moisture with a throughput of 800 Kg/m2-h and air consumption of 868 Nm3/t (460 scfm/t). The vacuum filter with 30 percent submergence provided a filter cake with 27.8 percent moisture with a throughput of 122 Kg/m2-h. The screen bowl centrifuge provided a dewatered product containing 32.9 percent moisture at a feed rate of 450 Kg/hr, however, the solids capture was only 65 percent. Addition of 1 Kg/t of a cationic surfactant provided filter cakes with 19.1 percent, 23 percent, and 34 percent moisture using hyperbaric, vacuum, and centrifuge, respectively. Similarly, addition of 0.5 Kg/ton of copper chloride lowered filter cake moisture to 20.7 percent and 24.8 percent, using hyperbaric and vacuum. With the centrifuge no improvement in filter cake moisture was noted. However, use of 80 Kg/ton of 'orimulsion' in the centrifuge provided dewatered product containing 26 percent moisture, and the solids capture increased from 65 to 95 percent. The dewatered product appeared dry and was easily handleable.

A possible process for extracting tellurium and antimony from a residue generated in alkaline sulfide leaching of telluriumbearing alkaline skimming slag was proposed. The central composite design was employed to define the optimal leaching conditions for tellurium and antimony extractions from the residue sample. Using a 23 factorial matrix, the best performance for tellurium and antimony extractions (96.36% and 99.64%) were obtained at 175 g L−1 Na2S concentration for 80 °C during 60 min. The notable degree for influencing tellurium and antimony extractions was leaching temperature, Na2S concentration, and leaching time. The analysis of variance results indicated that the regression model was significant and suitable to be used for the optimization of independent variables within the range. The model was validated under optimal operating conditions based on the experimental design results. Antimony and tellurium in the leach liquor were separated and recovered by H2O2 oxidation followed by Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. 98.93% of antimony was precipitated selectively during H2O2 oxidation, while 95.06% of tellurium was precipitated during Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. NaSb(OH)6 and elemental tellurium was obtained as the product.

Canada is a world class producer and exporter of minerals and mineral products. Today's highly mechanized Canadian open pits use state-of-the-art equipment and support technology. They are taking advantage of larger equipment, including in pit crushing and conveying, truck dispatch systems and electronic management tools. Mine planning is computerized. Environmental issues are dealt with in all phases of planning, and equipment modifications are pursued to keep them functioning in the hostile Canadian north. In 1991, Canada's mineral production (excluding fuels but including coal) totaled $C 16.9 billion, a decline of 13.8% from the 1990 total of $C19.6 billion. It is a major producer of nickel, zinc, asbestos, potash, molybdenum and uranium. Canada is also an important source of copper and iron ore (Fig. 1).

INTRODUCTION Project Background The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) hired the Seattle office of Parsons Brinckerhoff to lead a team of consultants to produce an Environ-mental Impact Study and perform conceptual and preliminary engineering. The pur-pose of the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement project is to replace the existing earthquake damaged and aging viaduct and sea wall, adjacent the downtown waterfront of Elliott Bay, with structures that have improved earthquake resistance and that maintain or improve mobility and accessibility for people and goods along the existing corridor. With an estimated replacement cost over $4 Billion and construction duration exceeding 8 years, it is one of the largest transportation design projects on the West Coast of the United States today. Seattle, Washington is a city of over 2 mil-lion people in the Northwest corner of the United States. Ever since the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897, Seattle has been considered a departure point to Alaska. Because of this, the street along the waterfront was named the Alaskan Way in 1930. Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall The Alaskan Way Viaduct (AWV) carries State Route 99 along the shoreline of Elliott Bay through downtown Seattle and is a vital part of Seattle’s highway system. The viaduct carries approximately 110,000 vehicles per day or 25% of all north-south traffic through Seattle (Figure 1). It is 3.4 km (2.1 mile) long with 3 lanes in each direction and was constructed of cast-in-place reinforced concrete between 1952 and 1956. The wear and tear of daily traffic, salty marine air, and several earthquakes have taken their toll on the facility. Studies in the mid-1990s provided early evidence that the viaduct was nearing the end of its useful life. The viaduct’s increasing age and vulnerability was apparent by crumbling and cracking concrete, exposed rebar, weakening column connections and deteriorating railings. In early 2001, a team of structural design and seismic experts began work to determine whether it was feasible and cost-effective to strengthen the viaduct by retro-fitting it. In the midst of this investigation, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Puget Sound region (the Nisqually Earthquake, located 56 km (35 miles) from Seattle and deep below the surface) caused moderate damage to the reinforced concrete structure. WSDOT closed the viaduct for inspection and repairs intermittently for several days over a period of several months.

Coal’s one-fifth share of the nation’s energy consumption is nearly as high as that of natural gas. Coal is the electric utility sector’s principal fuel supplier. It accounts for about55% of the electricity generated at power stations.

Extending an organization?s knowledge base throughout the entire enterprise can improve operations. Until recently, though, field operations were often left out of the information loop, as extending high-bandwidth communications into harsh environments often proved impossible due to thermal extremes, physical hazards and caustic chemicals. However, advances in the design and manufacture of rugged fiberoptic cables have now enabled the successful installation of 10-gigabit transmission links to places such as mining operations. The experience of Consol Energy exemplifies how plant managers can successfully enlist ruggedized tight buffered cables to help carry the efficiency of ERP communications into even the most challenging work environments. ?As part of our ERP implementation, we extended our corporate network underground into our mines using fi beroptic cable,? said Tom Prokop, manager-site support for Consol Energy. ?We?ve actually had rooffalls bury the cable between rocks and still did not lose data communications. Our maintenance personnel are now able to access our ERP system while underground at locations that can be up to 32 km (20 miles) away from their desks or the warehouse. Access to the corporate network allows them to order parts, look at electronic schematics, access monitoring data, no matter where they are in the mine. With a few hundred workers below ground, this immediate access translates into a time-savings that adds up in a hurry.?

Construction of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT), the last leg of the Anacostia River Tunnel System on DC Water’s Clean Rivers Project, started in September 2018 and was completed in April 2021. The 26-foot-bore earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) mined 26,737 feet at elevations between 80 to 160 feet belowground. Approximately 55% of the tunnel was cut through lower predominantly coarse-grained facies identified as the Cretaceous Patuxent Formation (undifferentiated) (PTX), and the remainder was cut through upper predominantly overconsolidated fine-grained plastic material facies identified as the Cretaceous Patapsco/Arundel Formation (P/A). Mixed face conditions were encountered in the transition from the P/A to the PTX and vice versa. This paper reviews the performance of the TBM that mined the NEBT through several unique challenges, including 8,000 feet of tunneling under the heavily developed Rhode Island Avenue corridor, major sensitive structures, cast iron water distribution mains, and other sensitive utilities.

The NC State University Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) and Waste Reduction Partners (WRP) of the Land of Sky Regional Council joined efforts in 2000 to initiate a technically sound and practical program for the management of high-volume coal combustion by-products (CCBs) in North Carolina. The accumulation of CCBs from coal burning boilers throughout the state of North Carolina posed a substantial storage problem, and the area was overripe for an effective management program, which would be environmentally sustainable. In particular, the public utility generators had filled storage ponds on their properties, and the storage overload had grown to critical proportions. Much the same situation existed for paper mill biosolids, which were stored on site in landfill cells along with daily output of CCBs from the mill boilers. A conversion process via the patented pyro-process12 (US Patent No. 5,342,442) to produce synthetic light weight aggregates (LWA) from CCBs and paper mill sludge was conceived to process large quantities of both these waste materials. MRL and WRP initiated and formed a consortium that brought together academia, private industry and state agencies to evaluate the production of LWA by the pyro-process. The industry partners included representatives from the power companies, industrial ash generators, expediters for coal ash products, as well as concrete block manufacturers. It was important to welcome interested parties from not only the western North Carolina area and other parts of the state but also from neighboring states including Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia. Membership of this consortium evolved during the intervening years to include the following participants and supporters: Progress Energy Carolinas; Duke Energy; Santee Cooper; Full Circle Solutions; Land-of-Sky Regional Council; NC Department of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance; Ecusta Business Development Center; Blue Ridge Paper Products; Jackson Paper and Manufacturing Company; Miller Perlite; Appalachian Products; General Shale Brick; Metromont Materials; Small Business Technology Development Center of the University of North Carolina system and North Carolina State University The initial development program conducted at the Minerals Research Laboratory (MRL) was to formulate an acceptable LWA product, which fulfilled user specifications for light weight concrete block and structural concrete application. Support work and program coordination efforts were furnished by retired technical volunteers in WRP. The work advanced steadily, using proven technologies well established in the mineral industry, to generate a very satisfactory LWA. The consortium then concluded that a more comprehensive CCB conversion program would have more appeal for full scale manufacture and commercialization, if a variety of products from CCB separation were generated. This product assortment would include bottom ash, low carbon fly ash, recovered carbon of high purity, as well as the synthetic LWA. The bottom ash would serve the concrete block market, the fly ash was in demand for ready-mix concrete, and the high carbon product could be pelletized and used as a fuel for reburn or by the steel industry, and the LWA was a sought-after component for light weight concrete applications. After scouting all these potential markets and finding them to be viable, the consortium then inaugurated an integrated pilot plant program for the CCB separation and conversion. The plan was organized in three (3) parts: (1) Phase I ? bench scale evaluation studies (2) Phase II continuous pilot plant evaluation and (3) Phase III ? conceptual commercial plant design including marketing efforts and attraction of business entrepreneurs to build a full scale manufacturing plant. Phase II would serve to validate the process in a continuous mode and produce substantial quantities of products for preliminary marketing efforts and for demonstration-of-use purposes. The consortium agreed to the name, CAROLINA ASH PRODUCTS, (CAP), for the integrated pilot plant program. The products generated might be designated with the CAP label as: bottom ash would be named CAP Granules, low carbon fly ash would become CAP Ash, recovered high carbon product would be CAP Carbon, and LWA would have the name CAP Stone. Phase II of the program processed 20 tons (18 t) of ponded ash from Progress Energy storage at a rate of 600 lb (271 kg) of raw ash per hour with favorable results. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Prior to committing laboratory research and development effort as well as support and coordination activities to this program, it was necessary to determine (1) the level of need for a freshly launched CCB reutilization program in this state and (2) what degree of versatility was necessary for such a process. State agency records and a survey of recent boiler operations indicated that in the state of North Carolina at least 77 facilities manage CCBs from their boiler operations. Despite continuing development efforts in more eastern parts of the state, the use of CCBs for commercial applications has not increased to a level which alleviates the need to store vast quantities in private monofills on the generator?s property. More than 1.25 million tons (1.13 million t) of CCBs are landfilled in NC annually, with 300,000 tons (271,985 t) per year generated in western NC alone. Many different boiler types, which span both very old units and those that are modern and efficient, were to be found. These included stoker-fired units, pulverized coal boilers, slag-tap furnaces, and fluidized bed combustion boilers covering a range of sizes. Any systems designed to separate CCB components from all these sources and convert them to useful secondary products would need broad processing latitude and flexibility. Up to the present there has been a paucity of research done in the western part of the state to find productive alternatives to storage in landfills. With tipping fees in our largest landfill now approaching $40 per ton ($44 per t) and escalating transportation fees (about $200 per truckload up to 40 tons, traveling a distance of 25 miles), the problem has become urgent both economically and ecologically. A well-designed, integrated wet process for CCB separation into value-added products had much potential to be less expensive than landfilling as well as to provide saleable materials with acceptable profit margins. These preliminary investigations also revealed that other major waste streams, in particular paper mill sludge and municipal and animal waste biosolids were important candidates for priority attention. Since these biosolids could furnish the organic component of a synthetic LWA product, they could be consumed as part of the same program. This added interest value to a growing list of partners to support and participate in the program.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL), investigated a means to evaluate the potential impact of surface conditions above underground mines on emergency response activities. Recent events have highlighted the need to conduct critical emergency operations on the surface above underground work areas. Accessibility and usability of the surface, such as the ability to drill holes or deploy seismic monitoring or through the earth communications systems, are an important consideration for emergency response planning. This paper identifies critical surface conditions such as: surface waters, valley fill, highways, railroads and significant structures that must be considered in emergency response planning and in the conduct of emergency operations as they relate specifically to the seismic detection of trapped underground miners. Results of case studies indicate a need to consider the impact surface conditions may have on emergency response capabilities.
