"Refuge alternatives provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their refuge alternatives meet the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and management of heat from the occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements and carbon dioxide generation that are representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current U.S. coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in.) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in a refuge alternative. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 113 to 134 W, depending on occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 L (0.81 cu ft) of oxygen per hour per person and 20 L (0.71 cu ft) of carbon dioxide per hour per person, which means the margin of safety is 50 percent or more compared with the MSHA requirements. The information on metabolic heat generation can be used to assess refuge alternative thermal environments by testing or simulation. The required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal can be used to assess refuge alternative requirements. This paper presents case histories of the construction of four large diameter circular shafts using reinforced concrete ring beams as the primary internal support system. The case histories pertain to concrete ring beam systems which have been successfully used in shafts up to 130 feet in diameter and 75 feet deep. Soldier pile and lagging, and driven steel piling earth retaining systems using ring beams, are discussed together with the cost savings associated with using concrete ring beams. Soil conditions encountered at the case history sites are discussed together with the development of design criteria for each shaft. Instrumentation data obtained at one site are also presented.

A Norbridge review of 25 top mining companies highlighted financial problems for many firms. To better understand these results, Norbridge benchmarked 17 mining companies to understand the problems that companies face, the methods being used to improve performance, and the results that have been achieved. The study indicates that many mining companies in three sectors-coal metals, and non- metallic minerals-have implemented new strategies to improve performance. Many of these strategies supplement traditional initiatives with two types of process improvement efforts, facility-specific and company-wide, to help generate performance gains. The study compares the results of these strategies in each sector. INTRODUCTION imes are tough in the mining industry. Norbridge reviewed financial results of 25 top mining companies for the past 2 years-seven coal companies, twelve metals companies, and six non-metallic minerals firms.*The study found that 40% lost money in 2002, and * Coal companies include Alliance Resource Partners, Arch Coal, Consol Energy, Massey Energy, North American Coal, Peabody Energy and Westmoreland. A bewildering number of continuous thickeners and clarifiers are used in mineral industries and other heavy industries. General types are: 1. Conventional Thickeners (Fig. 1). 2. Thickeners with Flocculating Feedwells (Fig. 2). 3. Solids Contactors (Fig. 2). 4. Tray Thickeners (Fig. 3). 5. Lamellas (Fig. 4). 6. Conventional Thickeners with Lamellas 7. High Flow, Fluid Bed Thickeners (Fig. 5). These units must be adapted to varied applications. They must provide operating flexibility to meet process needs. Such factors multiply the decisions which must be made prior to the selection of a thickener. The seven types of thickeners listed above, with their variations, share design concepts which limit their application and which can be used to evaluate their performance. Some of these are listed: 1. Feed velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 2. Natural or reagent flocculation is necessary. 3. Horizontal settling area is the basis for capacity. 4. Overflow velocities must be limited and/or controlled. 5. A controlled underflow is necessary. Applying these needs to the basic process concepts is thickener selection. The basic function of a thickener in the minerals industry is the separation of a thickened sludge containing fine solids from water. The Haile Gold Mine is one of the earliest gold discoveries in the eastern United States as well as one of the largest gold producers from that region. Gold was first discovered in the gravels of what is now known as Haile Gold Mine Branch in 1828 on lands then owned by Colonel Benjamin Hale (spelling not the same). Small placer workings were immediately started and it was not long before the surrounding residual soils and saprolites were also found to contain gold. Following the presence of gold in the residuum eventually lead to the discovery of the underlying gold-bearing lodes that actually outcropped in saprolite form where not masked by heavy vegetation or a thin veneer of Coastal Plain sand. The earliest attempts at production, immediately after discovery, utilized slave labor, washing gravel and residuum from leased tracts that were 15m (50 ft) square. Several at- tempts at small milling operations were made during the en- suing decades, but there was really no substantial or successful production until the 1880s.

A physical and chemical characterization study was carried out on 483 kaolin samples from 2.9 km2area at the Para Pigmentos mine along the Capim river, northern Brazil. The samples obtained from cores, drilled with regular spacing of 100 m, were evaluated using grit percentage, particle size distribution (psd), brightness, leachability, magnetic response and viscosity. These parameters were correlated with each process step in the plant and also the physical and chemical properties of the ore and finished product. Cluster analysis was performed and four main groups of kaolin were identified. These were then related to their performance at the various process steps and the quality of the initial product. These groups are well defined by plotting grit X “psd” and TiO2x “psd” in scatter plots.

This topic addresses historic and current techniques of excavating, supporting and lining tunnels of 4 m (13.1 ft) and smaller. Special considerations relate to the economics of working in close quarters and the sizes of tunnel which achieve the required facility in the optimum economic manner are discussed. The excavation discussion includes TBM, conventional and special techniques for hard rock, soft ground, subaqueous, free and compressed air tunnels. Internal and external support methods discusses timbering, steel ribs, bolting, strapping, shotcreting, grouting, and freezing. Lining methods include cast-in-place concrete, concrete pipe, segmented linings, shotcrete, and others.

Some attempts were made to recover gold from aqueous systems using immobilized persimmon tannin. This adsorbent adsorbed gold from solutions containing hydrogen tetrachloroaurate (III) with high efficiency, whereas there was minimal adsorption from solutions containing gold (I) sodium thiomalate and sodium dicyanoaurate (I). The adsorption of gold was rapid, and was affected by the pH of the solution, temperature, external gold concentration and amount of adsorbent. Adsorbed gold was easily desorbed with 1 M thiourea solution, indicating that immobilized persimmon tannin can be repeatedly re-used for the recovery of gold using adsorption-desorption cycles.

At the request of the U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the suitability of using tri-sets for protecting mine personnel in roof-fall prone areas. A steel-set arch provided by MSHA served as a basis for evaluating the performance of the tri- set. All tests and analyses were conducted according to the arch canopy test and design procedures developed by the Bureau. Theoretical resistance functions were established for the steel-set arch and tri-set and were representative of their experimental behavior. The resistance functions were used to determine the energy absorption capacity of the structures and to predict their dynamic response to impact loading. The dynamic tests demonstrated that the arch canopy design procedure is appropriate for tri -sets and yields conservative designs for both steel-set arches and tri-sets. As a result of this work, it is recommended that tri-sets may be considered for protection against roof falls, provided that the arch canopy design procedure is utilized for each application and that the principles underlying the design procedure are understood.

I feel that if we are to understand the problems that beset this basic mining and manufacturing industry and, more important, if we are to appreciate the solutions to these problems that I plan to put forward in a few moments' time, then we had better look at asbestos from the proper perspective. Asbestos has a unique combination of properties - properties not found in any other natural substance or man-made material. This has resulted in asbestos finding its way - in fact, being welcomed - into literally hundreds of applications.

Paste is a high density mixture of water and fine solid particles with a relatively low water content (10-25%) such that the mixture has a consistency as measured by the ASTM slump cone test from slightly greater than zero up to nearly 12 inches (305mm). Particles of different size classes will not segregate or settle when the paste is not being agitated or when it is stationary in a pipeline. Cement may be a component of paste. Larger particles of aggregate can generally be added to a paste without greatly changing the pipeline transport characteristics. A paste may bleed water slightly when it is allowed to be motionless for periods of up to several hours, but the solids do not become so dense that the paste cannot be easily re-fluidized. The dividing line between the definition of a high density slurry and a paste is not sharp. It is a practical matter that must be considered when designing a pipeline transportation system. If the pipeline is very short, there is very little risk of plugging the pipeline with a high density slurry when flow is stopped for short time periods. With longer pipelines the mixture must remain stable without motion for periods as long as several hours to avoid pipeline plugging. The fine particles in a paste mixture can be composed of mine tailings or naturally-occurring clays, silts and fine sands. The mineralogy of the particles thus can have a wide variety from quartz and feldspar to clays, micas and even salts.

Boddington Gold Mine is situated 130km South-east of Perth, WA. The operation is managed by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd. The Direct Leach plant was commissioned in mid 1986 at a rate of 3 million tonnes per annum. The plant was upgraded to 4.5 mtpa in 1988 and almost immediately to 6mtpa in 1989. Subsequent debottlenecking resulted in further increases in throughput up to 7mtpa by 1991. The SupergenelBasement Plant was constructed in 1990 and commissioned in early 1991. It was designed to process both copper-gold-silver anomalies within the laterite gold orebody and future hard rock ores. The Supergene plant incorporated control potential s­ulphidisation (CPS) and flotation ahead of CIL to remove a host of copper minerals. It operated in that configuration for 2 years at rates up to 350,000 tpa and average grades of 6.0 git gold and 1.2% copper. Gold recovery averaged 90.7% and copper recovery averaged 80.0% before the flotation circuit was decommissioned in March 1993. Quartz hosted high grade, free milling oxide and basement ores were discovered at the northern end of the orebody in 1990 and now comprise the major feed source to the basement plant. Oxide ores are currently milled at a rate of 550,000 tpa, while basement ores are milled at a 420,000 tpa rate. Metallurgical testwork during the feasibility stages indicated that up to 30% of gold in plant feed could be recovered by gravity separation methods. It was also highlighted that signifi­cant improvements in overall plant recovery and reduced operating costs would be achieved by maximising gravity gold recovery ahead of cyanidation. To achieve this, rec;iesign and upgrade of the gravity circuit was necessary.

Introduction Rod mills are horizontal, cylindrical, rotating, tumbling mills in which steel rods, that are usually about 6 in. shorter than the length of the grinding chamber, are used for grinding media. Fig. 33 shows a cutaway view of a rod mill. Rod mills were first used around 1910 because of their ability to grind in open circuit, consistently produce a uniformly sized prod¬uct, give greater continuous availability, and give lower maintenance costs. They have basically replaced roll crushers and coarse grinding ball mills in comminution flowsheets. The present 20-ft limit on rod length, based on rod manufacturing methods, and the pulp flow char¬acteristics, that influence mill capacity, have established the maximum rod mill sizes' of 15 x 21 Vs ft using 20-ft rods and drawing from 2,200 to 2,300 hp. Rod Mill Uses. The principal uses for rod mills are: preparing feed for ball or pebble mills, grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand, preparing coarse agitator feed for leaching operations, and for primary grinding circuits, particularly in industrial mineral applications. Wet grinding is the most frequently used grinding process for rod milling. There are a few special cases where dry rod milling is used. Preparing feed for ball or pebble mills is the most common use for rod mills. In ferrous and nonferrous ore concentrators, wet open-circuit grinding is used to prepare ball-mill feed. Figs. 34 thru 37 show the four basic grinding circuits used in these concentrators. In rod mill-ball mill grinding circuits, where the rod-mill discharge contains 25% or more of the grinding circuit product-size material, the rod-mill discharge can be fed to the ball- or pebble-mill classifier as shown in Fig. 34. This is the most frequently used rod mill-ball mill circuit in the nonferrous ore concentrators. In a few concentrators such as Anaconda's Weed concentrator,55 the rod mill discharges to one classification stage which makes the same or a slightly coarser particle-size cut as the classifiers used to close the ball- or pebble¬mill circuits, as shown in Fig. 35. In concentrators where rod mill-ball mill circuits are used to grind low grade magnetic iron ores such as Reserve Mining Co., Silver Bay, Minn.; Erie Mining Co., Hoyt Lakes, Minn.; Eveleth Taconite Co., Forbes, Minn.; US Steel, Mt. Iron, Minn. and Atlantic City, Wyo.; Inland Steel-Jackson County Iron Co., Black River Falls, Wis.; and The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., Adams mine, Kirkland Lake, Ont., the rod mills discharge to rougher magnetic separators (cobbers), the concentrates from which are fed to a ball milling stage as shown in Fig. 36. The same basic circuit is also used with gravity concentra¬tion methods such as spirals (Hanna Mining Co., Groveland, Mich.), tables (St. Joe Minerals, Bonne Terre, Mo.), and jigs. When the rod-mill discharge contains less than 25% of the grind¬ing circuit product size, this indicates an ore that does not readily produce the fines needed to help carry the coarse feed into the ball charge. When this occurs, the fines in the rod-mill discharge are needed in the ball mill or pebble mill so the rod-mill discharge flows direct to the second-stage mills as shown in Fig. 37. Rod mills are used to make feed for open-circuit ball mills such as those used in wet grinding cement raw material (American Cement, Brennan Ave¬nue plant, Detroit, Mich., and Port Huron, Mich., plant, and at the South Dakota State Cement plant, Rapid City, S. Dak.). Grinding gravel or aggregates to the size analysis required for making concrete sand is used in areas where natural sand of the proper particle size gradation required to make concrete is not availa¬ble. Three-quarter inch crushed aggregate is ground to 4 mesh using center peripheral-discharge rod mills (Fig. 38) operating in open circuit. US Corps of Engineers specifications state that the sand product be 93-100% passing 4 mesh and contain no more than 3-7% passing 200 mesh. It may be necessary to classify the rod-mill discharge to remove any excess -200 mesh sand produced in the rod mill. Particu¬larly when processing aggregate with high abrasion indices, center peripheral-discharge rod mills are used instead of hammer mills, fine bowl crushers, and crushing rolls for the production of specification sand. A unique machine has been designed for mining narrow veins. The machine, called the NONN, walks on the walls of the stope and carries a boom-mounted hydraulic impact breaker. The concept of walking on the walls allows an existing muck handling system such as LHDs to operate beneath the NOMN. The NOMM has four sets of legs which can be manipulated independently or concurrently to cause the carrier to walk in any direction and to turn sharp corners. The mining rate using the breasting method is targeted to be 25 t/hr.

Introduction The history of mining machine development has been and is one of "bigger is better." While this may not always be true, it is currently the only approach open to machine designers without specific in situ cutting force information. The US Bureau of Mines has tried to modify this approach by supporting research, both in the laboratory and in field tests, that demonstrates that bigger is only better if the equipment is used correctly. In-house research has shown conclusively that deeper cutting reduces both dust and energy (Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). This approach has been applied to a large Lee-Norse (LN456) continuous mining machine, which confirmed that slow deep cutting is beneficial and does not have a negative effect on production (Black and Rounds, 1977; Black et al., 1978). Specific in situ engineering data needed on coal cutting forces have not, however, been obtained by field tests with the LN456. Although the machine was instrumented to obtain data on one seam, it would be impractical to move the machine from mine to mine. It became apparent that a portable, easy to use device was needed for obtaining coal cutting forces in situ. Such a device could provide the engineering data needed by manufacturers, the site-specific cutting information needed by operators, and a field research tool to establish correlation with laboratory cutting tests. Design and Development According to a set of design guidelines established by the Bureau, the proposed device should be able to measure cutting forces directly with standard coal cutting bits, be transportable by two miners, and be self-contained. These guidelines were given to Ingersoll-Rand Research Inc. (IRRI). The contractor performed a rigorous review of 16 existing in situ portable tester designs, none of which could use a standard coal cutting bit to measure cutting force directly. These included a wide range of devices, all of which are discussed in the final report (Banerjee and Wisner, 1982). A series of design tradeoffs were established to satisfy initial design guidelines. The final deci¬sion was heavily weighted by an industry survey to determine the preferred concept from four man¬ufacturers and four operators. To assure ease of use with maximum information, all respondents wanted a linear cutting device that could work in seams down to 1 m (40 in.). The final design choice was between a linear and a rotary tester. The rotary tester would cut on an arc in the same manner as a rotary drum machine. It had several faults, however, that could not be resolved within the scope of this contract. The worst was related to arc cutting (Roepke, Lindroth, and Myren, 1976). Since any bit cutting on arc enters the coal at zero depth, goes to maximum depth only at the horizontal centerline, and exits at zero, maximum cutting force is obtained only at the instant the bit crosses the horizontal centerline. This centerline peak response would require that many replications be made with an arc-type cutter to get reliable force information. The arc-type tester would require extensive face preparation to establish the cutting path and extensive wasted clearing cuts to advance the device for additional layers of cuts. The linear tester could be mounted directly on any face or rib with only minor preparation. By its nature, a linear cut at a constant depth provides multiple peak force data over the length of the cut, thus reducing the required number of replications. This paper provides a discussion of the various federal and state laws governing water quality as related to mining operations. The specific laws addressed are the Clean Water Act, and the Arizona Mined Land Reclamation Act. Topics that will be addressed are mine water and process water discharges, storm water discharges, pollution prevention, dredge and fill, spill prevention control and countermeasure plan, and surface water protection. Proposed changes to the laws and regulations will be discussed. Compliance strategies will be suggested to prevent potential noncompliance and enforcement.

CITY OF EDMONTON Rate of Growth The City of Edmonton has been classed by some economists as being the most progressive City in Canada since the early 50's. The high rise buildings that are changing Edmonton's skyline, the rapidly expanding sewer and water network, and the proposed rapid transit system all indicate the requirements of an ever expanding City. Edmonton, the core of Canada's Energy Empire is the country's seventh largest metropolitan area. Bisected by the 22 mile long park of its magnificent river valley, it sits in the midst of the 50,000 sq miles of riches that have created it. Underneath the City, however, extending down for thousands of feet and encircling it for a radius of scores of miles, lies a fabulous store of petroleum wealth. By the early 1940's, based upon the needs of the farming areas, accompanied by some small exploitation of coal and timber, Edmonton grew to 100,000 people. Then in a short space of 20 years Edmonton shot up to be a city of 450,000. Figure 1 (Slide No. 1) indicates the population growth in the City of Edmonton and the Census Metropolitan Area from 1906 to 1971.

Florida phosphates ore typically processed by reverse flotation with an intermediate acid-scrubbing step. A single-reagent flotation process, using fatty acids or amines as the collector, would eliminate the intermediate scrubbing step plus an additional flotation step. This would not only simplify the process flowsheet but would also result in reduced reagent costs. The potential of single-reagent flotation of Florida phosphates using fatty acids as the collector is examined in this study. Introduction The beneficiation scheme now used for Florida phosphates involves the following three steps (Smith, 1976: Lawyer et al.. 1978, 1984: Moudgil et al, 1976, 1979, 1986, 1987): •rougher flotation of fluorapatitc particles using a fatty acid-fuel oil mixture as the collector. •scrubbing of fatty acid, and •cleaner flotation of silica particles using amine collector. Several attempts have been made to simplify the process flowsheet by floating either apatite or silica (not both, as is the current practice). However, single-reagent flotation schemes have had limitations in meting the concentrate-grade requirements of the phosphoric acid plants. In this study, an attempt was made to use a minimal amount of the fatty acid-fuel oil collector to obtain an acceptable grade (rougher) concentrate. Invariably, the recovery in such cases is expected to be lower than in the conventional rougher-flotation step. Therefore, scavenger flotation of tailings with additional fatty-acid collector was conducted to improve the phosphate recoveries.

According to previously established theoretical analysis and under certain conditions, a critical sampling grid can be determined for an earth-related space-distributed natural variable. Sampling above this critical limit adds little to the mapping results, while based on this limit the ideal process of reproducing the original phenomenon is theoretically defined. The objective of this paper is the application of the above theory to the Klidi lignite deposit in Florina, Greece, where Public Power Corporation (Greece) has conducted a sampling campaign to estimate the deposit thickness and its heating value. Data acquired for these two variables were analysed in the space domain in order to derive their respective correlation functions. The structural analysis of the deposit generated two covariance models, one for the thickness and one for the heating value, from which the critical sampling grid was identified. The conclusion drawn is that in some parts of the deposit the sampling grid is denser than required. Finally, an optimal sampling grid is proposed in order to gain the maximum information at the lowest cost.

Mining impacts to groundwater are being comprehensively regulated for the first time in Arizona with the implementation of the Aquifer Protection Permit Program. This far reaching program is one of the nation's strongest groundwater quality protection programs. Aquifer Protection Pennits (APPs) are required for almost all mining operations and will compel mining companies to pay increased attention to the potential groundwater quality impacts from their activities. All regulated mining operations will have to employ discharge control technologies and monitoring will be heavily emphasized. Technical requirements and relevant permit conditions are discussed.
