This paper summarizes the results of an investigation into possibly the largest coal pillar failure in the USA. The newly opened drift mine is located in Southeastern Kentucky and worked an 11 feet thick coal seam, all other mines in the District worked seams 4-5 feet thick. The initial mine development consisted of 14 main entries (Fig. 1) which were driven in two sets of 7, under increasing depth of overburden. As the left seven entries came under deeper overburden the pillar ribs began sloughing which caused many of the concrete-block ventilation stoppings to crack. The mine management stopped the advance in the left seven and continued with the right seven entries. During the spring of the following year development resumed in the left seven, rib sloughage occurred again and this time severely cracked many stoppings and many were totally disintegrated from the excessive deformation. Within few weeks the sloughage was so heavy that many of these entries behind the active face were filled with piles of sloughed coal slabs. When the face reached a depth approximately 1150 feet, the sloughage became a slow, massive squeeze. The entry convergence (closure) reduced their height from 11 to 7-8 feet and the squeeze spread back to shallower depth covering an area roughly 300 pillars.

From Alaska to Florida and California to Maine, the National Forest System (NFS) is host to unprecedented levels of prospecting and development. The NFS is large (191 million acres), geologically attractive from the mineral standpoint and relatively unexplored. Significant recent finds and developments involve silver, gold, platinum group metals, molybdenum, cobalt and phosphates. Exploration and development are closely regulated, but most of the NFS is open. The Forest Service endeavors to be a good host to the mineral industry, but increasingly is asked or forced to delay or disapprove mineral projects to protect the environment.

Visible-wavelength and near-infrared multispectral image cubes for the Animas River Watershed from Hermosa, Colorado to the headwaters at Animas Forks, Colorado were acquired on June 18, 1996 using the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's AVIRIS (Airborne Visible and InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer) instrument (Green et al., 1998). These image cubes have been analyzed using the USGS Tetracorder V3.4 implementation (Clark et al., 1995), an expert system which utilizes a database of more than 300 laboratory spectra of endmember minerals and mineral mixtures to generate maps of mineralogy, vegetation coverage, and other material distributions. Major iron-bearing, clay, carbonate, and other minerals were identified along with several minerals associated with acid-generating hydrothermal systems including pyrite, jarosite, alunite and goethite. Additionally, distributions of alkaline minerals such as calcite and chlorite indicate a relation between acid- buffering assemblages and stream geochemistry within the watershed.

The practical and effective pulp distributor here presented is believed to be of a completely new and innovative design. It was developed at the San Nicolas Plant of the Marcona Mining Company in Peru, where it has been thoroughly plant tested using iron ore slurries of a particularly abrasive nature. It has proven to be superior to the apparatus originally installed, or to any observed in operation elsewhere. In plant practice the capacity and efficiency of many process units such as screens, magnetic separators, and jigs are strongly affected by the loading pattern, and for better results the flow of pulp must be proportioned across the receiving lip in equal quantities per unit width. The distributors originally installed on the drum magnetic separators in San Nicolas proved to be unsatisfactory, and several trial modifications failed to show any improvement. As is usually the case, feed rates were being steadily increased, and appreciable losses to tailings resulted. A check of the distributors on the market discloses no reasonable substitute, so efforts were directed toward devising an entirely new type. Required was a positive type of action which would guarantee that the pulp flow be spread equally along the length of the drum. Discussion As indicated, the motivation for development was simple necessity. The plant in San Nicolas crushes, grinds, and concentrates magnetic iron ores of a particularly abrasive nature, and depends largely on magnetic separation to obtain a marketable product. Feed to the numerous drum magnetic cobbers and finishers varies from rod mill discharge at a nominal minus ten mesh to a ball mill fine grind of seventy percent minus three hundred and twenty-five mesh. After mope than fifty years Of Continuous operation, the Nevada Mines Division found itself faced with declining ore headings and metallurgical efficiencies, and rising operating costs. Although intensive process improvement programs had been initiated at various times in its history, insufficient return on investment served to defeat plans for any major changes in circuitry. The advent of practical large-volume flotation machinery, along with the success of long-range exploration drilling programs, complimented the results of an intensive program of research and development. The result of laboratory testing, pilot plant testing, and full scale plant tests was the proven indication of metallurgical improvement given increased flotation residence time and the effect of mechanical agitation in flotation.

PT Freeport's mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia uses a number of 500 m (1,640 ft) long vertical ore passes to transfer ore from the open pit to the mill. The current tonnages moved are in the order of 125 kt/d (138,000 stpd) and this will be increasing to 240 kt/d (265,000 stpd). This amount of falling rock generates high pres¬sures in the ore bins, when ore feed is terminated the pressure is no longer constrained resulting in back blasting of materials and air the ore passes. Three methods were tested to try and eliminate or reduce this problem; recirculation the entrained air, widening of the orepasses and relieving the pressure the back blast. The final method proved to be the most effective in the short term. As a long term so¬lution the orepasses are currently undergoing widening.

Outokumpu developed TankCell flotation cell technology beginning in 1990, following 35 years of successful flotation cell experience and application. In 1994, Outokumpu proved favorable operating success of 100-m3 (3,500-ft3) TankCells for porphyry copper and zinc flotation. In 1995, evaluation of a 150-m3 TankCell led to the successful application of these large cells in several operations. More than 350 TankCells of 100 m3 and larger in volume have been installed and are in operation. Key features of the Outokumpu TankCell design will be described. In addition, discussion of operating data from various metallic mineral flotation operations worldwide will be presented. Large flotation cell development continues today, with operating cell volumes of up to 160 m3 (5,500 ft3) in operation.

The Marlin deposit is a low sulphidation Au-Ag, epithermal system, with reserves of more than five million ounces gold equivalent. Marlin was discovered in December 1998, after a nine months grassroots exploration program in western Guatemala, focused on volcanic terrains of the Sierra Madre. Before the Marlin discovery, several gold prospects were found along an east-west corridor of approximately 70 kilometers long, associated to regional faulting systems. The deposit is hosted in faults, within Tertiary andesitic rocks and bedded volcano-sediments. Host-rocks are argillized closer to the surface and propyllitized at depth. Mineralization occurs in multi-stage quartz stockworks and breccia veins.

A statistically designed pot grate-kiln test program was conducted to determine the agglomeration process variables necessary for increasing the low temperature disintegration resistance (LTD) and reducibility (R40) of magnetite-based Empire acid pellets. The ASTM tumble index and compression strength were to be maintained at an acceptable level. Six process variables - bentonite addition level, preheat time and temperature, firing time and temperature, and cooling rate - were investigated within the constraints of the Empire plant. The bentonite addition level and firing temperature had the largest effect on pellet properties. The results of this program were verified during a plant trial. The target firing temperature at the Empire plant has been decreased for increasing the LTD and R40 of commercially produced Empire pellets.

The West Leg Interceptor is part of a new sanitary sewer system in the southwest suburbs of Cleveland. The first two construction contracts were excavated in glacial soils varying from hard tills to pressurized silts and flowing sands. These soil and groundwater conditions were locally problematic during shaft and tunnel excavations and final lining construction. A variety of solutions were developed primarily during construction. During the WLI-1R Contract, subgrade pressures, continued ground losses, and displacements necessitated extra eductor wells and modified inverts for stabilization of shafts. At the WLI-2Contract, one shaft excavation in similar ground required only one extra well. In the WLI-1R tunnel, localized inflows of groundwater, silt, and sand through the geotextile fabric were stopped by cement grouting. In one WLI-2 connector tunnel, damage to the TBM flood doors combined with wet, flowing silt and sand led to ground losses, surface settlements, plugging, patching, and chemical grouting. The concrete lining in the main WLI-2 tunnel required remedial work to improve watertightness at joints.

Attapulgite is a magnesium aluminosilicate clay mineral which exhibits unique, processing-enhanceable physical and chemical properties that are related to its current commercial uses. Properties of commercial interest are gelling, absorption, adsorption, binding, acid neutralization and many others. Major industrial applications are: (1) absorption by heat treated grades utilized in industrial oil and grease absorbents and in agricultural pesticide carriers; (2) gelling of aqueous liquid products by colloidal grades for stabilization and viscosity control in salt water drilling fluids, suspension fertilizers, liquid animal feed supplements, paints and tape joint compounds; (3) adsorption by heat treated varieties for the removal of catalysts, color bodies and other polar compounds from hydrocarbon streams; (4) gelling of organic liquids by colloidal attapulgite/surfactant blends in oil-type paints, fibrated and nonfibrated asphaltic coatings and mastic compositions, and (5) the binding of feeds and molecular sieve sorpents with colloidal type attapulgite products. These applications and other less common uses and potential uses will be discussed along with, the necessary selective mining and plant processing features related to each property and application.

More than 150 Mt (165 million st) of material crashed down at the Bingham Canyon Mine (Rio Tinto/Kennecott Utah Copper) near Salt Lake City, UT on April 10, 2013. The mine, one of the largest openpit mines in the world, ceased operations and evacuated personnel prior to the slide when it was discovered that material was moving at a rate of 5 cm/d (2 in./day). The slide destroyed the mine?s visitor?s center, buried several pieces of large mining equipment and severely hampered production. The Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. immediately began to assess the damage and look for options to reestablish operations. The highly unstable ground ? emphasized by another minor slide in September 2013 ? makes any cleanup efforts extremely dangerous. With terrain too dangerous for human operators, Kennecott was forced to look for alternatives that would help the company work on the treacherous slopes of the landslide while also keeping personnel safe.

This chapter on the role of minerals in developing economies is oriented toward economic policy issues. The discussion and analysis cut across the technical, economic, legal, and policy fields. The goal of this chapter is to pro- vide relevant background information important to individuals involved with the minerals sector in developing countries. Where possible, trends are shown to provide a basis for understanding the evolving role of minerals in developing economies. This chapter is divided into the following five sections: (1) characteristics of developing countries (which presents selected statistical comparisons); (2) government objectives in developing countries; (3) government policy formulation in developing countries; (4) determinants of future trends, and (5) a summary of the chapter's major points combined with the authors' view. CHARACTERISTICS OF DEVELOPING COUNTRIES There are 155 nations in the world categorized as "developing countries." In total these nations represent about one third of the value of the world's mineral production, three quarters of the world's population, and over half of the world's land surface area. The group of so-called developing countries is quite diverse and there are exceptions to almost any general observation about the group as a whole. Most definitions of the term "developing country" are based on levels of per capita income. However, if per capita income is the sole criterion used in categorization, then several oil-exporting countries would jump from the category of developing country to the category of developed country.a Obviously, this results in a poor fit with respect to other measures. In general, the majority of developing countries can be characterized by relatively low per capita income, high population growth rates, high levels of unemployment, low levels of education, short average life ex- pectancies, income distribution skewed toward the highest 20% of the population, and a large share of exports represented by primary commodities. b For the purposes of this chapter a slightly modified version of the widely used World Bank system of classification (shown in Table 1.2.1) is used. As summarized in Table 1.2.1, developing countries are divided into three main groups based on estimated gross national product (GNP) per capita. It should be noted that the high- income, oil-exporting countries have characteristics of both developing and industrialized countries; however they are included for most statistical comparisons within the group of developing countries. Conventional remote sensing applications for the exploration of natural resources has largely been the domain of low resolu­tion Earth orbiting systems such as Landsat™ which can sample a broad range of the spectrum. As the classic application of remote sensing, it has proven its worth through the discovery of numerous mineral deposits worldwide. Often this technique relies more on the spectral content of the imagery for narrowing potential sites on the ground, but often cannot reveal the detailed context of the observed response. As the dawn of the new era in remote sensing grows closer, high-resolution imagery is proving its worth for the definition of mineral potential and its cost sav­ing advantages for mine management.

Proximity Detection Systems (PDSs) are used in the mining industry for protecting mine workers from striking, pinning, and crushing injuries when they work in close proximity to heavy machines such as continuous mining machines (CMMs). Currently all Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approved PDSs are magnetic field based systems which can be influenced by the presence of wire mesh that is commonly used for supporting roof and ribs in underground coal m ines. In this paper, researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterize the influence of the mesh on the performance of magnetic PDSs by measuring the magnetic field difference around a CMM caused by the presence of the mesh. The results show that the magnetic fields are generally enhanced by the mesh which causes the PDS detection zones to be increased correspondingly. It was discovered that the fields around the joints of two mesh sections have the greatest enhancement and thus deserve more attention. In addition, it is found that the presence of mesh can also cause a variation in the generator current. The influence of mesh is characterized by the change in the generator current with respect to the distance between the generator and the mesh. It was found that the generator current change caused by the mesh can be significant (on the order of ten) when the mesh is extremely close to the generator (e.g, less than 1 cm) and is negligible when mesh is relatively far (greater than 0.15 m). The findings in this paper can be used to develop guidelines and best practices to mitigate the influence of mesh on PDSs. INTRODUCTION The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requires operators of underground coal mines to equip place-changing continuous mining machines (CMMs) with proximity detection systems (PDSs) to protect mine workers from striking, pinning and crushing injuries when they work around these heavy machines. Although a variety of technologies can be implemented for proximity detection, the magnetic-field-based PDS that was originally developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has shown great effectiveness in challenging mining environments and currently all MSHA-approved PDSs are magnetic-field-based systems. As shown in Figure 1, a magnetic PDS typically includes two major components----the magnetic field generator and the Miner Wearable Component (MWC). Magnetic fields are generated by injecting a high electric current into a ferrite-rod antenna sealed in the generator. The magnetic field strength detected by an MWC varies with the distance between the MWC and the generator. In a typical PDS, multiple generators are mounted on different locations of the machine. The relative location/zone of an MWC is determined based on the field strengths from different generators picked by the MWC. Ideally, for a PDS to work properly in the underground, the magnetic fields generated by the different generators should be stable and not vary with the environment, as the system would interpret any variation of the magnetic field as a result of the distance change between the machine and the miner wearing the MWC. In reality, however, this is not always the case since magnetic fields can be altered by a number of environmental factors such as the presence of steel wire mesh that has been widely used in underground coal mines for supporting roof and ribs In this paper, the influence of mesh on the PDS performance is investigated and the magnetic field change caused by the mesh is measured.

Managing a mine or mineral processing operation in today's environment presents many unique challenges to mining companies. In recent years, headlines around the world have publicized major incidents such as those associated with the Marcopper Mine in the Philippines, the cyanide release in Guyana from the Omai gold mine and numerous other mishaps associated with mining. These notable upsets were due to engineered system failures, either during normal operations or as a result of uncontrollable events. There fore, many mining firms are attempting to assess their overall risks and establish some priority for expenditure of limited operational and environmental budgets. Failure of an engineered component can have dire operational consequences that affect profitability until repair or replacement can be completed. In addition, there may be significant environmental consequences associated with the engineered system failure. This, too, may affect profitability for an extended time or even the viability of an operation. An engineered risk assessment (ERA) can support a mining company's efforts to cost effectively manage environmental risks associated with the operation of its facilities. The ERA approach also provides information about the current condition of engineered systems. This ERA approach provides a systematic review of the risks of an engineered system failure and the possible associated environmental consequences at mining company facilities. This approach has been successfully applied to many industries and types of engineered systems (Barneich et al, 1996; Whitman, 1984; Power and Tomkins, 1974; Keeney, Nair, and Kulkarni, 1979). This approach evaluates all mining and mineral processing facilities located at a single site and compares them with similar facilities located at multiple mine sites. The ERA approach has been applied to a mining, milling, smelting, leaching and refining operations. These assessments can be part of a comprehensive environmental program to aid in the recognition and cost effective management of the potential environmental risks associated with the operation of facilities. To improve coal flotation Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Research Department has been working on a number of related problems based on both physical and chemical factors. The ideal is of course full understanding of the interrelated effects of both sets of factors. However, detailed studies5 of each physical factor have produced immediately usable results in commercial coal flotation and are providing the bas is for our current work on the effect of chemical factors. Since these detailed studies provided the basis for the present investigation of froth sprinkling, their key results are highlighted here. For example, for a highly floatable bituminous coal, particle floatability was shown to be directly related to the percentage of coal surface available for bubble attachment and inversely related to particle mass. The data also underscored that in a given size range the addition of mineral matter to a particle makes flotation more difficult both by adding to the mass of the particle and by decreasing the amount of coal surface available for bubble attachment. Size also affects particle floatability in that as the size of particles of a given specific gravity increases, mass increases and the ratio between coal surface area and mass of the particle decreases. Flotation tests showed that any recovery of the coarsest particles in a coal feed is accompanied by progressively higher recovery of finer and finer particles. Consequently, fine high-specific-gravity particles are recovered with the coarse good coal. As a result, when the entire 14M x 0 size range is processed by froth flotation, the good coarse coal is contaminated with high-specific-gravity fines. It is the small quantities of these fines that must be rejected from the froth product if flotation efficiency is to be increased above its present level.

A drill system configuration capable of working in the arctic offshore environment was developed to evaluate the placer gold resources contained in the glacio-fluvial sediments offshore Nome, Alaska. This system is capable of working on the shore fast ice during the winter months and is deployed on a drill ship during the summer. Transfer of the drill between its summer and winter configurations is accomplished with a minimum of modification to the design. The system is designed around the Becker drill. This percussive, reverse circulation drill is capable of penetrating the indurated glacial sediments present in the offshore Nome environment. This drill has operated effectively to depths in excess of 50 m (164 ft) below sea level. Since early 1987, in excess of 2000 holes have been drilled using the system. The drill system often operates in extreme weather conditions. It has averaged approximately 10 holes a day of drill production. The ore reserves defined during these drilling programs have resulted in the recovery of more than 70,000 oz (2.18 t) of gold to date, by the mining vessel Bima.

The process of marine diamond mining off the west coast of southern Africa started in the late 1950?s by a Texan, Sammy Collins, and subsequently continued by De Beers to the present day, has proven to be an excellent proving ground for the development of technology and mining systems that ensure a sustainable and financially viable business. Reviewing the development of resin-in-pulp (RIP) technology for the extraction of gold in the world, especially in South Africa and USSR, and the chemistry of interaction between aurocyanide ions and anion-exchange resins. RIP benchtest and pilot plant investigations show that the resin of the weak-base and strong-base can absorb gold in the cyanide pulp and gold can be eluted from the strong-base resin by electro-elution. The possibility of future application of RIP technology in China fa also briefly discussed.
