Fluid energy grinding, or jet pulverization, refers to the process of entraining solid particles in high velocity gaseous or vaporous streams and reducing their size by impact and attrition against other particles or some sort of target. Since all desired size reduction is not achieved in one pass through the zone where energy is applied, some form of classification is necessary to return oversize particles to the grinding zone for further size reduction. Applications Fluid energy mills have normally been used to produce products where the particle size is basically finer than 325 mesh. Products having particle size distributions with a maximum size of 4 or 5 µm, and with a high percentage finer than I µm, can be produced using fluid energy mills. More recently, some fluid energy grinding units have been applied economically to produce ground products with 1 or 2% coarser than 200 mesh. It is also possible to consider usage of a jet-pulverizing zone, without the usual integrated air classi¬fier, operated either in open circuit or in conjunction with a screen. Feed sizes to be delivered to the fluid energy mill depend on the material involved, the type of jet pulverizer used, the finished product size requirement, and the upstream process. In some units feed sizes up to l in. or larger can be accepted, but practical economics usually require the starting material to be -4 mesh or smaller and some pulverizers are typically fed at 20 mesh top size. It is not unusual to find feed materials at essentially -325 mesh when extremely fine products are needed, since capacities are improved with finer feeds. Conventionally the fluid energy grinding process has been used for relatively soft and nonabrasive materials. This includes very low¬melting-point and temperature-sensitive materials or coatings, since there is no measurable temperature rise during fluid energy milling. More recently, however, jet pulverizers are being used on highly abra¬sive materials such as silica, feldspar, glass, zircon, calcined alumina, coke, boron carbide, and similar materials. Since the primary energy application is by impact of particles against themselves, there is a low rate of wear resulting in a small amount of product contamination and in low maintenance costs. Usually the fluid energy pulverizer produces a more narrow particle size distribution than other mills provide, and this is useful where such a requirement exists. It is possible, within limits, to adjust classifi¬cation and other functions of the overall fluid energy system to vary the particle size distribution curve and thereby approach the broader distribution obtained from other grinding methods. By controlling the temperature, composition, and humidity of the fluid used, it is possible to incorporate other functions with the size-reduction process. These include drying or adding moisture, coating, mixing and blend¬ing, and even oxidation or reduction and other chemical reactions or their inhibition. The finished product is discharged in the fluid stream and is conveyed pneumatically to the desired point, where a suitable dust collector must be provided. Operation and Mechanical Features One of the earliest fluid energy mills is the Micronizer now manu¬factured by the Sturtevant Mill Co. Similar units are also manufac¬tured by Jet Pulverizer Co. and others. As shown in Fig. 81, the micronizer consists of a shallow circular grinding chamber with noz¬zles arranged at the outer periphery to discharge tangentially inward. Fluid (usually compressed air or superheated steam) is provided to the nozzles from a manifold at pressures normally in the range of 100-150 psig and at temperatures up to 800°F or higher, depending on the raw material, required results, and economic factors. Coal produced from surface mines in the Western United States is becoming a more important part of this nation's economy as other types of fuels become scarce. This paper reports the investigation of alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams. The results of this investigation are presented as the engineering-economic aspects of alternative parting handling methods involving stowing or back filling techniques. The coal and parting characteristics were selected as being representative of those under consideration or actively mined in the West. The basic philosophy of evaluation is to establish a mine-within-a-mine where equipment selected for minimal capital investment can remove the parting and second seam nearly independent of the ongoing, present production. With proper consideration of design, this parting-coal removal is evaluated as a second operation within the first and has its own profitability measure. The Fort Union Area of Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas contains large reserves of low sulfur sub-bituminous coal. In many locations, several coal seams are close to the surface and are separated by relatively thin layers of parting. The removal of overburden and the mining of the upper seam is accomplished effectively with conventional mining methods and equipment. Mining a second seam of coal and handling the parting in accord with economic and environmental controls presents a number of problems. Typically, mining companies have adapted the conventional strip mining techniques used in the East. However, the extreme thickness of the western coal seams offers alternative mining method possibilities for parting and second seam removal.

"The U.S. stone industry is in a transition from surface quarries to single and multiple level underground stone mines. The factors driving this transition include surface quarries; ? reaching their economic stripping ratio, ? encroaching on the mineral reserve boundary where the remaining reserves are below the active pit, ? dust, noise, and blast vibration concerns as suburban neighborhoods and development move into formerly rural areas. Ground control is critical to the success of a safe and productive, mining operation. The primary focus of the ground control engineer in an underground stone mine is the stability of the roof or back, development and benched pillar stability, stability of the sill pillar between vertically adjacent mining levels, and floor stability. Roof stability begins with the selection of a stable back horizon based upon the presence of a thin shale parting, stylolite, or other discontinuities from which the production shot can easily ""peel"" away leaving a stable back stratum. Room width and the decision of whether to bolt the roof, the bolt length, bolt type, bolt diameter, and spacing of the support is controlled by the thickness, fracture spacing, jointing, and material properties of the back strata. Horizontal stress controls the header and crosscut azimuth as to avoid driving perpendicular to the maximum horizontal stress direction. Stable pillar dimensions depend upon the interaction of the; ? vertical stress resulting from overburden thickness and multiple level interaction of overlying level(s), ? mining height during development and the final mining height after floor shots are taken while benching, ? presence of faults, folds, or joints passing through the pillar, and ? stone lithology recognizing that the presence of oolitic bands, shale partings, and bentonite beds create zones of weakness that can destabilize an otherwise competent pillar. Floor stability is typically not a significant issue for underground stone mines because the bearing capacity of the stone exceeds the vertical pressure transferred through the pillar. However, floor heave can be a ground control issue where shale partings, moisture sensitive strata, weak stone bands, or horizontal stress is present. Roof stability and pillar stability problems can be initiated as the floor heave enables the pillar and roof to settle. The ground control issues for underground stone mines are most clearly presented through a series of case histories. The case histories presented in this paper are a mix of ground failures and successful mining. The focus is on the geotechnical data required for underground stone mine ground control for roof, pillar, and floor design and stability analysis."

"Even with modern detection and firefighting techniques, mine fires continue to be a safety concern. However, some underground mine fires can be addressed with the remote application of high expansion foam, reducing firefighter exposure to hazards. The flow of this foam can be numerically or computationally simulated in order to gain a better understanding of its behavior, but rheology parameters are needed as inputs to produce accurate simulations. For this reason, this work studies the rheology of firefighting high expansion foam using a foam generator and Poiseuille –Flow Rheometer. Rheological parameters for foams with expansion ratios between 250-1280 are represented by the consistency index (k) and the power law index (n) due to the results show a strong agreement with the Power Law model for non-Newtonian fluid viscosity. Furthermore, experimental results show that high expansion foam behaves as a shear thinning fluid with a power law index around 0.4 and viscosities in the range of s 0.1 Pa-s and 0.042 Pa-s under shear rates between 44 ??-1 and 187.3 ??-1. INTRODUCTION High expansion foams are called to foams with expansion ratio greater than 200. Expansion ratio (??) is defined as the ratio between the volume of foam produced (i.e. volume of foam solution and volume of gas) and the volume of foam solution used (NFPA 2014). Because of its high expansion ratio, one of the most important application of high expansion foams is to fill or flood large spaces such as hangars, storage facilities and underground mines for fire suppression. The foam can fill large structures using small quantities of foam solution within a short time (Sthamer 2012) (Martin 2012). Although the specific high expansion fire suppression mechanism has not been understood on a quantitative basis, a possible mechanism is fuel isolation when the foam act as a physical barrier between oxygen and the flame. Furthermore, as a consequence of this contact water is evaporated, causing cooling of fuel and surrounding air. Besides, water vapor as product of water evaporation causes a dilution of oxygen concentration available to the fire (Fleming and Sheinson 2012). High expansion foam can be applied remotely by means of conduit pipes or in situ close to the fire. In most of the underground mines scenarios, fires have to be addressed remotely to reduce miner and firefighter exposure to the hazards (Smith et al. 2005). Although high expansion foams should not be blasted and must be deposited directly on the area of application because of their low density (Harding et al. 2016) sometimes it is complicated to apply it directly to the fire due to complex access areas at underground mines. In these cases, foam has to be applied far away from the fire. Despite of this fact there is a lack of knowledge in terms of rheological behavior of high expansion foam under high shear rates (Gardiner, Dlugogorski, and Jameson 1998). Furthermore, there are a few attempts to simulate numerically the high expansion foam flow due to the ignorance of its rheological parameters and its complex behavior. (Weaire 2008)."

More than eighty years ago, in what we generally consider a more leisurely age, workers and engineers began the construction of the longest railroad tunnel in the world. When completed, the Simplon Tunnel ran more than twelve miles through the alps to connect Switzerland and Italy. Work began in 1898 and the tunnel was completed in 1905. In all it took about seven years to build one of the world's great tunnels. More than seven years ago, in what was hoped to be a rapid and constructive to the deaths of 38 workers in two spectacular tunnel disasters in 1971, the secretary of Labor's Construction Advisory Committee on Safety and Health began in January 1972 a search for an effective standard on tunnel safety. Much hard and useful work has been done, especially by the construction advisory committee' but more than seven years later, we still don't have a tunnel standard. We may speculate that, when the Simplon Tunnel was completed, workers and their bosses assembled to celebrate their achievement and to count their casualities. We have no need to speculate on the lack of achievement up to this time. An so far as I know, the bureaucrats have suffered no casualities except perhaps some unreported cases of ring-around-the-color. The only moral I can draw from all this is thai it is easier to penetrate solid rock than it is to get through bureaucratic fog. We can only hope that OSHA will finally take advantage of the work which was finished years ago and complete the actions necessary to give us a tunnel standard. The occurrence of underground fires in narrow tabular ore- bodies where high density timber support is used is a dangerous and disruptive occurrence. The containment and extinguishing of the fire remains a very important consideration in reducing not only the loss in production time but also in limiting the extent of the area damaged by the fire. Mindful of this, Gold Fields have adopted and developed the inert gas generator system from its origins in Poland for use in Group precious metal mines. The system generates an oxygen- deficient atmosphere which is introduced in the fire area after this has been sealed. A number of problems had to be overcome to operate this system successfully within the infrastructure of these mines. Of particular significance is the operation of a jet engine, the prime component of the system, at air pressures encountered below sea level. The modifications have been found to be satisfactory to the point where, since 1992, ten underground fires have been extinguished using this system. Invariably, the areas affected by these fires were extensive (over 1 000 000 m3) and required continuous operation of these units over extended periods of time (in some cases in excess of 400 hours).

Simulation modeling of portions of two platinum mines using General Purpose Simulation Software (GPSS/H™) is presented in this paper. Both mines, located in the Bushveld Igneous Complex PIC) of South Africa, exploit Merensky and UG2 reef horizons, which are processed separately and therefore handled individually from the stope face to surface, requiring duplication of storage arrangements and batch operation of transport facilities. The first simulation assignment concerns the upgrading of a shaft system operating exclusively on Merensky ore, to hoist UG2 ore and increase production. The second assignment comprises a simulation of rock flow from the stope face to surface by way of tramming, inclined conveying and vertical hoisting. Development ends and stope boxholes were modeled down to individual hoppers (cars) demonstrating the versatility of the GPSS/H™ language.

The forces of nature have concentrated sand at various geographical locations that are being mined and processed for a large variety of industrial uses. While most operations serve a number of industries, this paper deals only with the foundry requirements. The forces that have decomposed a source rock, transported this material and redeposited it, have created two general types of sand. These types are classified as the (1) Lake and Bank Sands and (2) Silica Sands. The Lake and Bank sands will contain 92 to 94% Sio2 while silica sands are in excess of 98.5% Si02 and most of the producers wash these sands to up grade their products to 99.5% or better. Included in the Lake and Bank sand would be the river sands that are used primarily for construction purposes. The Foundry Industry is broken down into three types of castings : 1. Grey Iron Foundries The grey iron castings largest market is the automotive industry in Ohio, Northern Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. These castings are poured at temperatures ranging from 2400° to 2700°F. The Silica Sands or the Lake and Bank Sands will satisfy the requirements of the grey iron castings. There are 2 ½ to three million tons per year shipped from the state of Michigan far grey iron castings by the Lake and Bank Sand Producers.

Calcium carbonate is perhaps the most widely used mineral in the world. With total consumption of all calcium carbonate exceeding over 25 million tom per year, within this class of filler, a relatively smaller segment of precipitated calcium carbonates (PCC) is often misunderstood as a commodity product and bundled in the same category as ground calcium carbonate. However, each material has a distinctly digerent role and characteristics. Precipitated calcium carbonates are used to influence specific performance in a specific application whereas ground calcium carbonate is used primarily to reduce cost in many applications. In this paper, attempts are made to demonstrate the role of nano-fine-PCC in improving shear-thinning characteristics of common and specialized sealants and automotive underbody coating and how such "nano-particle" cal- cium carbonate properties can be exploited to process PVC plastics while reducing overall cost. We also review the role of precipitated calcium carbonate as "nano" material and why it must be viewed as a specialty additive.

The ore reserve modelling of stratiform uranium deposits to be mined by selective underground mining methods must be done with consideration of the erratic nature of the ore-forming processes that produced the mineralization. Estimation methods that model the uranium grade as a smooth transition between high-grade and low-grade drill hole intercepts tend to greatly overestimate the ore tonnage. Care must be taken to first establish realtistic ore pod geometries and then estimate the grade of the reserve units within the pods.

Jade is a commercial term encompassing green, white, black or yellow-brown jadeitite and nephrite. Jadeitite consists of Na-rich pyroxene, whereas nephrite consists of prismatic to acicular amphiboles of the tremolite-actinolite series forming bundles that are randomly oriented and interlocked. Nephrite is tougher (harder to break) than jadeitite. Its fracture strength is about 200 MN/m2 whereas that of jadeitite is about 100 MN/m2. On the other hand, jadeitite has a higher hardness (7 compared to 6.5 on the Mohs scale). There are over fifty known nephrite occurrences in British Columbia (B.C.). These occurrences consist of individual blocks, boulder fields, talus blocks and in situ occurrences. Most of the in situ occurrences are lens or cigar shaped. They occur at, or near the contact of ultramafic/mafic rocks (mainly serpentinites) with cherts, and other metasedimentary or igneous felsic rocks of Mississippian to Jurassic oceanic terranes such as Cache Creek and Slide Mountain. These contacts are commonly interpreted as shear/fault related. In general, it is believed that the B.C. nephrite formed by metasomatic exchange between ultramafic and silica-bearing rocks. Impurities in B.C. nephrite are spinel group minerals (chromite, magnetite, picolite), diopside, uvarovite, titanite, chlorite, and talc. Jadeitite is slightly denser than nephrite and good quality material sinks in methyl iodine. There are no known jadeitite occurrences of economic interest in B.C., but there are at least four geographic areas where favorable lithologies, and metamorphic conditions (Pn) required for the formation of jadeitite coincide. These are Bridge River, Pinchi Lake, Dease Lake, and Jennings River. These areas are known to contain small concentrations of jadeite, or are characterized by blueschist or eclogite-grade metamorphic conditions. Rhodonite and pyroxmangite are MnSi03 polymorphs. These minerals are pyroxenoids and are macroscopically and microscopically very similar. For brevity, both are grouped together under the term "rhodonite". Most of the B.C. occurrences are hosted by late Paleozoic chert sequences and are lens shaped and concordant. The common association of rhodonite with iron formations, jasperoids, and/or volcanogenic sulphide deposits in southwestern B.C. permits the delineation of favorable horizons using magnetic or electro-magnetic geophysical methods. Geographic associations between manganese showings and sulphide deposits, and the hydrothermal chemical signature of the rhodonite occurrences from this area, suggest a genetic link between rhodonite and volcanogenic sulphide deposits. The typical rhodonite rocks consist of rhodonite, pyroxmangite, neotocite, black amorphous Mn-oxides, Mn-bearing garnet, ± epidote, ±chlorite, ±rhodochrosite, ± parakutnah-orite, ± Mn-bearing calcite, ± iron oxides and hydroxides. Garnet ± epidote forms yellow patches and layers within the rhodonite. Within some of the rhodonite occurrences, the garnet is altered to chlorite. Rhodonite-bearing rock is commonly cross cut by secondary manganese oxide veins, creating a characteristic web-like texture. In several localities, the contorted bedding planes are readily recognized. Mn-calcite and quartz also crosscut rhodonite. Rhodonite deposits hosted by high grade metamorphic rocks may contain pyroxmangite. Rhodonite is an important gemstone and ornamental stone in B.C., second only to nephrite in dollar value. B.C. nephrite and rhodonite have been used for the past 100 years in local jewelry and ornamental applications. More recently they have been used in table tops, and they have potential as upscale materials in tile-making. There may be a market for tiles made from lower grade materials that were previously extracted and stockpiled. The prices of nephrite, jadeitite, and rhodonite vary widely with quality, but gem and ornamental grade stones are relatively highly priced materials and they trade world-wide.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure, and other types of sensors are increasingly being used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP) while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration, and testing methodologies that were employed by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide Internet Protocol data transport. INTRODUCTION To enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry [1]. However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology (IT) infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer IP-based technologies that are part of IIoT. This was the case with a mine in the Western United States; it lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. The mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios. DATA RADIO SELECTION The primary selection criteria for the data radios were network data format, modulation type, and radio channel spacing. The network data format decided upon was Internet Protocol. This format allowed for straightforward integration between the IP-enabled data acquisition system located in a remote heading and the network switch located in the control room. It also eliminated the added complexity of additional network hardware such as Ethernet to Serial converters. IP additionally provided a direct path to integration into higher bandwidth networks, such as fiber optic, should they become available."

The selection of a slope angle for an open pit in rock has often been made without the benefit of a comprehensive engineering study. This is largely due to the fact that the hardware and procedures necessary for such a study have not been available. Recently this situation has been reversed. The application of borehole television and terrestrial photogrammetric devices has made possible the accurate determination of rock joint structure, on which stability calculations can be based. Another important aspect is the evolution of practical methods of conducting in-situ rock joint strength tests.

The reliability and comparability of LCA results crucially depends on the quality of LCI data, that is defined by specific normative requirements. In parallel the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) provides a set of guidance documents for enhancing the quality, rigor, and utility of SD reporting with specific reporting principles that address similar issues on a company level comparable to LCI data quality requirements on the process level. In order to assess the general suitability of the fundamental reporting principles for LCI data quality purposes selected reports from mining and minerals (M&M) sector are assessed within a detailed analysis."

"BACKGROUND As of December 2015, there are roughly 475 road tunnels within the United States according to the most recent national tunnel inventory data compiled by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA); whereas, there are more than 615,000 highway bridges on public roads. The FHWA estimates that tunnels represent nearly 100 miles of Interstates, State routes, and local routes. Tunnels are part of the national transportation infrastructure and represent a significant financial investment for the owner and, hence, the tax payers. Tunnels, that are not properly maintained, usually require more extensive repairs and consume more resources. Tunnels must provide safe, reliable, and effective transportation even as these structures age and deteriorate. Furthermore, tunnels generally remain in service for extended periods of time due to their very high construction costs. For example, many tunnels were constructed decades ago during two historic periods of highway system expansion; the first period correlated with the era of public works programs linked to the Great Depression of the 1930-40s; and the second period of expansion occurred with the building of the interstate highway system in the 1950-60s. As such, these tunnels are fast approaching 60 to 80 years old. Congress enacted the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), which was signed by the President on July 6, 2012. This legislation followed a fatal tunnel incident on July 10, 2006 and a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report1 that noted the importance of conducting regular tunnel inspections. MAP-21 authorized the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to develop a mandatory inspection program for all tunnels on all public roadways (Bergeson and Ernst 2015): To help safeguard tunnel users and to ensure reliable levels of service, the FHWA developed the National Tunnel Inspection Program (NTIP), which is comprised of the National Tunnel Inspection Standards (NTIS), the Tunnel Operations Maintenance Inspection and Evaluation (TOMIE) Manual, the Specifications for National Tunnel Inventory (SNTI), and the Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE). The data collected from the program will be stored in a National Tunnel Inventory (NTI) database. A comprehensive and refresher training program was also developed to help qualify and certify key tunnel inspection personnel to include the program manager and team leader."

Southwest Salt Company is solution mining the Luke Salt Body of probable late Miocene age. The discovery hole, from which the first core was recovered, was drilled in 1968. The deposit was encountered at a depth of 880 feet, and the bit was still in salt at the bottom-hole depth of 4,500 feet. The solar ponds, developed on land formerly dedicated to agriculture, have an annual capacity of about 90,000 tons. Because land values are very high, mining rates and procedures are governed by the need for near-saturated brine to minimize land requirements. Because of the frequency of dust storms, the salt operation uses a unique wet-harvesting method. Most inventory is kept in the ponds under brine and harvested only a few days before shipment. Studies of the nature of crystal growth and the distribution of windblown and brine impurities led to the development of procedures for processing salt of high chemical purity and low insolubles content. Chemical purity exceeds that of most salt produced in fuel-fired evaporators. Salt is shipped from Phoenix as tar east as west Texas and as far west as central California. Occasional shipments have been made to Hawaii and Alaska.

The Nuggety Gully prospect is located 170 km (106 miles) south- east of Port Hedland and 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Marble Bar in the Pilbara Region, Western Australia. The area is held under title by Esso Exploration and Production Australia, Inc. The prospect covers a significant, but currently uneconomic body of molybdenum and copper mineralization of porphyry style, associated with Archean high level acid intrusives intruding sediments and volcanics of a narrow east-west Archean greenstone belt. The Nuggety Gully intrusive rocks have been dated at 3.2 b.y. ± 117 (de Later, oral communication). The current resource estimate for the deposit is 102 Mt (1 12 million st) of 0.1 1 % Mo and 0.15% Cu.

"The data from EPB cells located inside the pressurized chamber of EPB TBMs and also the data from the pressure sensors in grout lines are quite important in controlling the EPB operation. However, there have always been questions in regards to pressure distribution along the shield body. Could the pressure distribution data be used to come up with potential locations for ground loss? Does the overcut region, the space between the shield body and the maximum cut diameter, consist of broken material or EPB muck, or does that region consist primarily of void space? During free air interventions, how does pressure distribute along the TBM body? To address these questions, one of the two EPB TBMs used in the Northgate Link Light Rail project in Seattle, WA is equipped with EPB cells in front and rear body to monitor the pressure distribution along the TBM body in addition to the standard 6 EPB cells located inside the cutterhead chamber and pressure sensors located at the grout lines. This paper discusses the results of this study and weighs on the valuable data that can be collected by using the shield pressure sensors.INTRODUCTIONThe cutterhead of the TBM is normally equipped with overcutters on the cutterhead periphery which extend into the annular space beyond the diameter of the TBM shield. Thus, the overcutters serve to disturb and excavate some of the ground in the annular space which reduces friction and resistance around the TBM body. This phenomenon is necessary to help the TBM steer and navigate around curves. Additionally, the shield of an EPB TBM is also often shaped like a cone, with the diameter decreasing from the front to the tail shield. This conical shape also helps the TBM to navigate because material that is cut by the cutterhead either gets pulled into the cutterhead or it gets pushed out of the way – around the cutterhead and into the annular space. In EPB tunneling, the conditioned material from the face that does not get pulled into the cutterhead mixing chamber flows into the shield gap and pressurizes the surrounding ground. Additionally, grout can travel from the segment annulus into the shield gap. The pressure in the shield gap mainly depends on the pressure of the material at the face and the grouting pressure behind the tail shield."
