With the inauguration of the open pit operation in Bagdad, plans were formulated for a large scale leaching operation. Dump stockpiling was started almost immediately, but actual production was not initiated until the spring of 1961. Like all neophytes, we started something about which, on a commercial scale, we knew next to nothing, either dump preparation or leach procedure, and as a consequence, we are still paying the piper. True, we had been through an extensive laboratory pilot program, but it soon became apparent that there was considerably more to increasing solution volumes than simple multiplication. Had we initially possessed our present acumen, the Cyprus Bagdad plant could be operated more efficiently and at a better profit. During the past several years, the art of dump leaching of copper has improved in many ways, primarily because of the application of scientific principles gleaned from general mining practice. Rigid pH control and the use of atomic absorption techniques for rapid," accurate assaying have probably played a leading role in this respect, although we cannot overlook the other sophisticated electronic controls lending improvement to acid addition and pumping, better piping materials, and lastly, the more efficient use of our pregnant liquors. Thin too, the years of experience have given us a greater understanding of dump behavior in general; and, we can, to a greater extent, measure, predict, and avoid some of the idiosyncrasies inherent in every dump. However, it is my firm belief that we will still be confronted with unexplainable dump behavior as long as we are involved in leaching. We have found our dump to be a wonderful money bank, but one that is capable of yielding a wildly fluctuating profit.

INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. Zoning and environmental restrictions on land usage now make open- pit quarrying more and more difficult, especially near urban areas. One option for quarry operators is to go underground for mineral production. While underground-mining costs are higher than those for open-cut work, there are several compensating advantages. In many cases it is possible to produce the same material underground without affecting land values, and the surface is preserved for industrial, residential, or agricultural purposes. Proper planning can yield underground sites which have great potential value for industrial plants, warehouses, or other business uses. It is essential to plan underground mineral extraction using a three-dimensional modular-room architectural concept to fully exploit secondary space utilization. Prior to the start of underground mining an operator must make a careful geological engineering study to deter- mine the suitability of the deposit and must prepare a plan for safe and economical mining for the purpose of converting to secondary usage.

In recent years the hue and cry of American industry concerning the pressure of foreign competition on the domestic marketplace has become all too familiar to most of us, as we are all well aware, the steel industry has not been exempted from this pressure, reduced production levels, work force cutbacks, and in some extreme cases, plant closings and company liquidations have resulted, new regulations governing imports and quotas have been enacted, foreign trade agreements reached, and more strict regulation enforcement practices undertaken, despite these, and other measures, the impact of aggressive foreign competition has not lessened, the concensus of numerous management consultants is that in order to successfully cope with these problems we must draw on all available technology to provide the tools which will enable us to enhance our management effectiveness, one area requiring particularly close attention in any mining operation is that of managing critical resources - namely time, energy and equipment in a fast and efficient manner, In mining, with critical resources deployed over a large geographical area, any degree of success involved with resource management is dependent upon knowing the current status of all work related activities, if we, as mine operators, are to be more successful in this area, additional tools are a necessity and modern technology has provided a multitude of new options from which to choose.

The importance of underground stress instrumentation cannot be minimized. It was Lord Kelvin who said that unless you can assign a number to a quantity,, you know very little about it. Most engineers will agree although this kind of statement is resented by our friends in non-technical fields. Mining is undergoing a revolution from art to science. But how can mining methods be optimized if there is no way of measuring the effectiveness of a given mining method? Do we know how effective a' support is unless we can determine its reaction to the mine structure? How do we assess the need for modifications to existing systems and supports, and how do we measure the effectiveness of such changes? Cut and try techniques are too wasteful of time and energy, and rarely provide solutions to a given problem. The purpose of underground stress instrumentation is to provide answers to some of the above questions -- answers that cannot be obtained otherwise This does not mean that laboratory studies are not valuable -on the contrary. Laboratory and underground studies supplement one another. Rock mechanics had its conception with the study of stresses in homogeneous, isotropic, and elastic models subjected to various force systems. These analyses were valuable inasmuch as they pinpointed possible sources of trouble due to stress concentrations. If the results observed underground did not always agree with the experimental analysis, it was not an indictment of the latter. More probably, the discrepancy could be attributed to the lack of similitude between model and prototype. The more nearly one can simulate underground conditions in a model, the more apt one is to produce results which correlate well-with underground observations. It is impossible to completely simulate underground conditions because all of the significant design parameters have not been recognized and evaluated. What better way can one evaluate these parameters than by underground stress instrumentation?

The Newmont roasting plant in Carlin, Nevada, commenced operating in December 1994. Over the years, refractory ores and pyrite concentrates from different gold deposits constituted the feed to the facilities. Historical plant performance indicated that the roasting temperature was the main variable affecting the structural characteristics of the calcine, which in turn affected the recovery of gold by cyanidation. Gold recovery as a function of roaster temperature has been closely monitored since October 2000. The original design temperature was 550° C. Lower roaster temperatures of around 500° C resulted in a gold recovery increase of more than six percent. This increase was directly related to an increase of the surface area of the calcine. The implementation of an ?intelligent? process control system helped significantly in achieving steady low roasting temperatures, thus obtaining high gold recoveries of 92 to 93 percent. Under these conditions, several roasting campaigns with high-arsenic-containing ores were conducted, which resulted in a significant decrease in gold recovery. The reduced gold recovery was caused by the loss of surface area (e.g., porosity) of the calcine as the arsenic content of the roaster feed increased.

Other than being used to convey fill material for the gob stowage or building of ribside packs on advancing longwell faces, pneumatic conveying has not been used for the transport of materials on a large scale in mining operations. The technique is extensively used in the wood products industry for conveying wood chips, limestone and other ingredients for the manufacture of paper, for the transfer from railcars, barges or ships to silos or stockpiles and further transfer into the pulp mills. This method of material transfer has the distinct advantage of transporting suitable material over horizontal and vertical distances within the same system. In considering material associated with mining, this includes, ore, coal and rock up to 4 inch cubed size, throughputs of 200 tons per hour over horizontal distances of 3000 feet or vertical lifts of 2000 feet. In recent years tests have been carried out to determine the physical and economic limitations of pneumatic hoisting, the results of which have led to the installation of two fully productive coal hoisting systems at mines of the National Coal Board in Great Britain. The equipment used for the pneumatic hoisting of coal or waste rock is described in this paper, together with a brief history of the tests which led up to the installation of the two hoisting systems in Great Britain.

A detailed investigation of the stability in cyanide solutions of native gold and gold-silver tellurides in a flotation concentrate from the Golden Mile, Kalgoorlie, has been undertaken to assess whether leaching under different conditions can be used to quantify the distribution of Au between native gold and gold-silver tellurides, as suggested by, for example, Chryssoulis and Cabri (1990). The leaching was carried out on +20 µm native gold and gold-silver tellurides separated from a high-grade flotation concentrate and then diluted with barren quartz. The material leached assayed 270 ppm Au and 118 ppm Te and the leach conditions used were:- Stage 1: Leaching in dilute cyanide (0 .1 % ) at pH 9 .5 for 24 hours to dissolve native gold but not gold-silver tel­lurides. Stage 2: Leaching the residue from Stage 1 in strong cyanide (2%) and pH 12.5 for 96 hours to dissolve gold-silver tellurides.

Explosion-resistant seals in underground coal mines isolate the environment within the sealed area from the active workings of the mine. The current United States Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requires these seals to be constructed of solid concrete blocks. The CFR also allows for alternative methods or materials to be used to create a seal if they can withstand a static horizontal pressure of 138 kpa (20 psi), provided the method of installation and the material used is approved in the ventilation plan. The purpose of this report is to identify those explosion-resistant seals that have been tested and meet or exceed all the requirements of the CFR.

On July 7, 1971, noise regulations for underground coal mines were implemented under provisions set forth in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. These same regulations now also apply to coal mine surface facilities. In August 1971, in anticipation of these regulations, the Bureau of Mines, through the cooperation of the mine operators, conducted extensive noise surveys in three coal cleaning plants. The survey was conducted in an attempt to identify those occupations where exposures would exceed the proposed regulations.

In today's work environment a tremendous amount of data is required to provide the regulatory agencies justification to issue a mining permit. The demands for data, specifically environmental characterization data, grow and the mine plans must address the issues raised by the interpretation of that data. Computers and computer software can provide operators and consultants with the tools necessary to assimilate, digest and interpret these seemingly unmanageable data sets. This paper presents some examples of how Mincom's MineScape software can be applied to the task of developing coal mine permits in an electronic format.

Strain burst can occur in underground hard rock excavation when the in-situ stresses are high enough. The prerequisite for rock burst is that the total energy released from the rock mass is higher than the energy needed for rock fracture. The total released energy is contributed by both the burst rock and the surrounding rock. The part of the energy from the burst rock is constant per unit volume of the rock, but the part from the surrounding rock is associated with the burst volume. A greater amount of energy will be released from the surrounding rock in the case of a larger volume of burst rock. The postulation for the energy conversion in strain burst is verified through a FLAC3D model in the paper. It is assumed that the strain burst occurs in a circular tunnel that is located in the hydrostatically loaded rock mass in the model. Six pairs of notches with different depths are created in the opposite walls of the tunnel to simulate the bursts. The energies released from the notch rocks and from the surrounding rock are calculated during the burst. The simulation results show that the percentage of the energy released from the surrounding rock in the total released energy increases with the notch depth. The numerical modelling confirms the postulation that the surrounding rock contributes more energy than the burst rock itself in large-scale strain bursts

The response of 174 domestic water supplies to longwall mining of the Pittsburgh coal seam was compared to various physical parameters. Sixty-four percent of domestic water supplies returned to service without the need for intervention, while thirty six percent required intervention to reestablish a suitable water supply. Domestic well response is strongly correlated with the topographic setting. Valley wells showed the least effect while hilltop wells showed the greatest effect. Well response was also found to be correlated to the location of the well above the mining with greater effects observed in zones of surface tension and compression, and fewer effects in zones which are stress neutral. Ground water supplies remained unaffected or were re¬established at 149 of 150 sites, indicating that ground water resources remain available to domestic wells after mining. Results of this study support the stress-relief model of ground water flow in the Northern Appalachian Basin. Longwall mining's effect on this system is to locally increase fracture connectivity in the near surface zone. This may shift the zones of saturated fractures to greater depths beneath hilltops and hillsides, and increase recharge and storage in valleys. General trends in well response are predict¬able utilizing the stress relief conceptual model, the topographic setting of the water sources, and their location over the mine.

INTRODUCTION The flotation of minerals from their ores in flotation cells involves understanding many chemical and physical processes ranging from electronic events in the bulk mineral and in the mineral surface regime. molecular events at interfaces, the statics and dynamics of thinning and rupture of microscopic to molecular intefacial films, the fluid mechanics of bubble- particle events, the dynamics of air-water-solid colloid states in a flotation machine, etc. etc. D.W. Fuerstenau, whom we honour in this symposium has made unique contributions to many of these diverse physico-chemical and technological sub-processes. The present paper is concerned with a number of observations of the behaviour of minerals in flotation cells and the surface science of some mineral sulfide-water systems. We do not intend to be comprehensive in our analysis, but rather to highlight the challenges that face the scientific masochist who chooses to understand "froth flotationn. In what follows, emphasis is placed quite deliberately on technologically relevant, dynamic or realistic flotation processes i.e. the recovery in a froth of a given sulfide mineral particle of a given size and history from synthetic or actual ores in a flotation cell. "During the past decade, column flotation cells have become widely accepted for upgrading ultrafine sulfide ores. However, the use of columns has been widely relegated to cleaner circuits due to their comparatively high selectivity derived from the use of wash water dispersed over a deep froth. High tonnage rates and low feed grades make using column technology in roughing and scavenger stages challenging due to the resulting size of the needed equipment. To specifically address this challenge, a new high-intensity flotation system known as the StackCell™ was developed. This technology makes use of a novel pre-aeration method coupled with froth washing to simultaneously provide improved flotation kinetics and selectivity. The novel aeration system provides efficient bubble-particle contacting thereby shortening the residence time required for particle collection. This article reviews the technical design features of this new flotation technology and presents recent data from in-plant pilot testing in a copper-sulfide application. INTRODUCTION Column flotation cells have become very popular in the minerals processing industry for cleaner circuits due to their ability to produce a high-grade froth concentrate via the use of froth washing (Luttrell et al., 1999; Kohmuench et al., 2004). The use of wash water minimizes the nonselective recovery of ultrafine impurities that are normally entrained into the froth product from conventional flotation machines. On the other hand, the unique design of a column cell typically requires a large tank volume. Column cells must be tall to ensure that the pulp residence time is long enough to offset their inherently slow flotation kinetics and to minimize internal mixing that is detrimental to overall cell performance. The tall design minimizes the total floor space required for the column installation, but substantially increases the foundation load. The large size of the column tank can also create issues during fabrication, transportation and installation. To address these concerns, the engineering team at Eriez Manufacturing developed a next-generation flotation technology called the StackCell?. This high-intensity flotation machine was designed to provide column-like separation performance within a very compact volumetric footprint. This article describes the key working features of this new technology and provides data from recent pilot-scale tests conducted in gold and copper-sulfide applications"

Gas wells have often intersected mining resources, but unconventional shale well drilling has more recently challenged mines to balance the risk of interaction due to higher pressures and larger quantities of gas. Full extraction mining, such as the longwall method, induces ground movement that may influence the casings if wells are drilled within the mining area. The possibility of a casing shear would lead to the risk of unplanned gas migration into the mine. This has the potential to quickly overcome the ventilation system and reach the explosive range which, if ignited, can have catastrophic consequences on the health and safety of underground workers. The utilization of network software to model mine ventilation is a common practice in the mining industry and can assist with a well breach scenario. This work focuses on a well breach in between two longwall panels after second panel mining with gas entering primarily through the gobs of the adjacent longwall panels. Applying the network software Ventsim, a gob zone and ventilation network were created to better understand the distribution of gas within the mine and the limitations and effectiveness of a ventilation system. The model shows both a transient flow simulation and steady state concentrations throughout the mine ventilation system. Using a standard Pittsburgh coal seam longwall ventilation scheme, we find that the system can dilute a significant inflow of up to 700 cfm of methane.

Escanaba, Michigan, is located on the South¬ern shore of the Upper Peninsula on a sheltered area of Lake Michigan called Little Bay de Noquet. The Chicago and North Western Transportation Company has operated a rail-to-ship ore transfer facility at this location for well over 100-years. It is the only terminal of its type on Take Michigan and thus can offer a longer navigation season to lower lake markets than other upper lake ports. It all started in 1864 when the Peninsula Railroad of Michigan, now a part of the C&NW, completed a 100 km rail line from Little Bay de Noquet to the Jackson Mines at Negnauee, Michigan. During that first year of operation approximately 31 000t of ore were loaded onto ships at Escanaba from what was then called the Merchants Dock. By 1871 demand had already exceeded capacity and it was necessary to build a larger dock, which in turn was replaced with a still larger pocket dock in 1903. There are no plans or records available to indicate how the ore was handled from rail to ship prior to the construction of the pocket dock.

The results obtained from hatch, flotation experiments on two coals were used to develop relationships between the recoveries of water and solids into the concentrate. When the recovery of non-ash material (RN) for any size fraction is plotted against a parameter X, defined as [x _ Amount of (W) recovered x Collector dosage (C)in the concentrate (cc)(kg/t)] a single "non-ash recovery curve" is obtained. Non-ash recovery curves thus obtained from different size fractions are used to get a unique "modified non-ash recovery curve" for a given coal, using the reduced efficiency curve concept. Similar observations have been noted in the case of recovery of ash material (RA) also. The amount of water recovered into the concentrate is plotted against a parameter "Water Recovery Factor (WRF)," defined as [WRF = T.F.(1+C)] where T is time (in sec) and F is frother dosage (in kg/t). Plotted in this form a characteristic water recovery curve, for a given coal is obtained that may be defined by the following equation: [W4=W_(1 pWRF-e] The above relationships have been verified against the experimental results obtained from three more coals and are found to give satisfactory predicted values.

Grade control models are supposed to provide a higher resolution than long-term or interim models. However, available grids from diamond or reverse circulation drilling do not provide that required resolution. In this study, a geostatistical workflow is proposed to integrate available grade data from production blastholes with its operational parameters taken when drilling downhole. The step of geological logging can be replaced by machine learning models for classifying blastholes into lithologies and hardness classes. Next, indicator and ordinary kriging use the classified blastholes and previous data for estimating the model domains and the grades within each one. The workflow is applied in a world class iron ore mine in Brazil.
