PREFACE The National Waste Terminal Storage Program was initiated to conduct the research to select a site for the disposal of high level radioactive waste in deep geologic formations. As part of this program, the Savannah River Laboratory at Aiken, South Carolina, is conducting geologic research of generic applicability on the potential subsurface damage to a repository from an earthquake. Part of this study involved the collection of data on subsurface damage due to an earthquake, and another part involved the calculation of displacement fields as a result of an earthquake. Both of these studies were conducted at Terra Tek of Salt Lake City. This report is an abridged and combined version of both studies which was presented at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference in Atlanta, GA, on June 19, 1979.

Added value is a term loosely used in the industry, but what exactly does it mean? What does it take to make a value-added product and more importantly how does a company maintain the value added to its products? Most people agree that value-added means the value of a mineral minus the cost to produce it. But what is misleading is that producing value added products does not necessarily guarantee the profitability of the products. In some cases firms that make "value-added" products are not very profitable. It is not only important to understand how to make a value-added product but also how competitive forces in the market can erode the value added. Therefore, when we look at value-added opportunities, we must understand how to obtain the value added and more importantly how to maintain the value. There are four major factors that limit a company's ability to add value to its products. This paper will examine these factors and will use the ground calcium carbonate and mica industries as examples.

I was very interested in Professor Park's data on subsidence over longwall panels. His paragraph labeled "Conclusion," however, does not seem appropriate for the article. Nothing in the article gives any discussion of how knowledge of subsidence characteristics can be used in mine design to minimize damage. That thought may have been a reason for undertaking this study, but not a conclusion of it. From his article, I would conclude that subsidence movements last considerably longer at great depth. And the National Coal Board's subsidence prediction model represents this area reasonably accurately, though most literature claims their model predicts far greater disturbances than actually occur in most areas of the United States. Also, I would like to know, is the method used to determine angle of draw? The criterion used can make a significant difference in the value obtained. With 30 m (100 ft) spacing and a 122-m (400-ft) depth the angle between stations can be up to 14°.

In Roman and earlier civilizations the term cement was applied only to mixtures of lime, pozzolana, sand, water, etc., used as a mortar to bind larger stones. Today, portland cement, the subject of this section, can be briefly defined as follows: The product obtained by finely grinding clinker produced by calcining to incipient fusion (i.e., sintering) an intimate and properly proportioned mixture of argillaceous and calcareous materials. History The Egyptians were probably the first to join building stones with a mixture of sand and a cementitious material (i.e., having the property of or acting like cement). It is generally accepted that the cement used by the Egyptians on such structures as the Great Pyramid was calcined gypsum, Later the Greeks began to calcine limestone for use as a mortar with sand and water. Still later, broken brick and tile were added to the mortar to make the first concrete. The Greeks and Romans found that some sands produced mortars that were especially resistant to the action of water. Hydraulic (i.e., underwater-hardening) cements formed by combining slaked lime, water, and finely divided siliceous materials (e.g., pozzolana) possess superior strength and are capable of resisting the destructive action of water. They were used on the Pantheon, Colosseum, and other structures, some of which are still standing. In 1756 an English engineer, John Smeaton, found that an argillaceous limestone (i.e., containing an appreciable amount of clay as an impurity) produced a cement with greater resistance to the action of water. Despite Smeaton's findings, the use of the old mixture of lime and pozzolana long retained its popularity. Significant contributions in cement technology from England, Swe¬den, France, and Holland were made in the next 68 years. However, the invention of portland cement is generally credited to Joseph Aspdin, an Englishman, who in 1824 patented "portland cement." The name was selected because, on hardening, it resembled the natural building stone from the Isle of Portland, England. The patent features mixing ground limestone and argillaceous materials in appropriate proportions and calcining (i.e., expelling CO2 by roasting) the mixture. This superseded the existing practice of calcining naturally occurring argillaceous limestone. In about 1845 Isaac Johnson, also English, conducted experiments on proportioning the components and calcining them at higher tem¬peratures. His accomplishments are accepted as the beginning of the present-day portland cement industry. The U.S. cement industry originated with the demand for good hydraulic cement for building structures such as the Erie Canal, which was started in 1817. The first discovery of cement rock (i.e., naturally occurring argillaceous limestone with near-optimum ratios of calcium carbonate, alumina, and silica) near Fayetteville, N.Y., was made by C. White. In 1818, White secured a patent for the manufacture of natural cement from that deposit. Subsequently, several natural cement plants were built in 1830-1840 at Rosendale, N.Y., and in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. David Saylor, who participated in establishing a natural cement plant at Coplay, Pa., in 1850 discovered that a superior cement could be produced by calcining the rock at higher temperatures than hith¬erto. In 1871, Saylor obtained a patent and commenced the manufac¬ture of portland cement. By 1890, there were 17 portland cement plants in the United States with a combined annual output of 62,300 tons. At the end of 1970, the number of plants producing portland cement in the United States (including Puerto Rico) was 169, down from a maximum of 185 in 1967, with total annual shipments of 73.4 million tons valued at $1,298 million. (Fig. 1). In 1970, annual world production of hydraulic cement (which includes pozzolanic materials, hydraulic limes, natural cement, alumina cement, and portland cement, all of which are in current use in various parts of the world) reached 630 million tons (Table 1). Flowsheets of typical U.S. cement plants are shown in Chapter 13. Chemical Composition and Physical Properties It is generally accepted that portland cement clinker consists of a mixture of compounds or synthetic minerals. The four principal compounds are:

The Jones Hill prospect is a Proterozoic age, volcanogenic, semi-massive to massive sulfide deposit. The deposit is located on the western edge of the Pecos greenstone belt in the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northern New Mexico. The prospect is found in a block (West Block) of meta- igneous rocks, primarily diabase, metavolcanic rocks, and metasedimentary rocks (fig. 1). This assemblage is typical of lithologies found in the greenstone belt. Metamorphic grade is greenschist to lower amphibolite. The West Block is bound- ed on the west by Proterozoic age (1.7-1.4 b.y. by Rb/Sr), granitic plutons collectively called the Embudo granite, and on the east by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, primarily sandstones, shales, and limestones of Mississippian and Pennsylvanian age. The mineralization occurs in a single horizon which has been overturned and cut into two blocks by a high-angle reverse fault (fig. 2). The mineralized horizon is found at the contact of felsic metavolcanic and rnetavolcaniclastic rocks with overlying intermediate metasedimentary rocks. The local stratigraphic sec- tion from bottom to top is as follows: 1) porphyroblastic quartz- sericite schist (originally a rhyolitic, subvolcanic intrusive); 2) quartz-sericite-chlorite-biotite schist (felsic metavolcanic and metavolcaniclastic rocks); 3) chlorite-talc-biotite-sulfide schist (altered felsic metavolcanic rocks); 4) carbonate-quartz-sulfide [ ] chlorite-tremolite-talc schist (mineralized exhalite); 5) quartz- chlorite schist (silicified tuff); and 6) amphibole-chlorite-feldspar- biotite schist (occasional mafic to intermediate metavolcanic flows).

INTRODUCTION The following papers describe the extraction of nickel in the form of ferronickel from the Dominican laterites. The Falconbridge process was developed initially in the Falconbridge Metallurgical Laboratories and subsequently in several successive stages of pilot plant operation in the Dominican Republic. In the course of this work we came to believe that there is advantage in piloting on site. Mining, metallurgical and geo-political considerations all have major impact and that belief has been borne out by commercial plant experience. Lateritic nickel ores differ substantially, even within the same orebody, in their amenability to extraction methods. The Falconbridge process takes account of the heterogeneous nature of the deposit. Three years of geological field exploration led to ten years of process development after it was realised that the then known metallurgical processes would not give economical extraction from the Dominican ores. In addition to establishing the viability of a novel pyrometallurgical approach, it was necessary to verify design parameters for a very considerable scale-up to prototype commercial operation. The plant was eventually constructed within the original estimates of time and cost. Unique features contributing to the technical and commercial success of the project are described. Additionally, some bold extrapolation based on pilot plant work, eventually proved to be quite conservative. The mine is not a conventional open pit operation, but is perhaps better characterised as an earth moving job. Novel application of mobile equipment led to great flexibility in the mine, where operation of several mining fronts is essential to maintaining uniformity of ore feed to the plant. As you know most of the gold and silver is produced by one of the following processes: (1) Agitated Leaching - Carbon adsorption or Merrill-Crowe (2) Heap Leaching - Carbon adsorption or Merrill-Crowe The figure 1 shows a typical flowsheet for recovery of gold and silver using Agitated or Pachuca Leaching Operation. The ore is crushed and ground and then leached in cyanide tanks solution using either Pachucas with air agitation or tanks with mechanical agitation. The soluble metal values are separated from the pulp by counter-current washing. The precious metals from cyanide solution are either recovered by zinc dust (Merrill-Crowe Process) or by loading on carbon and stripping with hot caustic cyanide solution. Gold and silver are electrowon on steel wool cathodes.

A computer performs all logic and computations customarily done by hand in preparation of engineers' estimates or contractors' bids on tunnel-shaft systems. The program described is based on construction methods, work forces and equipment selections corresponding to the current state-of-the-art of rock, soft ground and cut-and-cover tunneling. The program contains logic to permit estimates of cost of complicated tunnel-shaft systems; it is not necessary to input quantities, as the program calculates those from the tunnel design that is internally generated. In any estimate, the program bases its cost computation on user-input requirements and site conditions, such as tunnel shape and size, shaft depth, ground characteristics, construction methods, and other factors. To provide great flexibility, the user of the program is provided with options for accepting designs built into the program or overriding these designs by his own inputs. An illustrative example is presented.

The recent developments in refractory precious metal ore processing (Bio-oxidation, Autoclaving), and the revitalization of the more traditional roasting processes have attracted great attention in recent years and are indeed the focus of todays symposium. It must always be remembered, however, that the term refractory ore by definition means that the material 'must be capable of being treated at a profit". Given the high cost of the refractory processes, the requirement to be treated at a profit requires very close scrutiny during the evaluation phase of the property development. The M.G.M. film company has the latin motto Ars Gratia Artis meaning Art for Arts Sake. Ingeniatore Gratia Ingeniatoris (a very crude attempt at saying Engineering for Engineerings Sake) should not be the motto for mining companies intent on exploiting refractory gold deposits, but rather the wittily tilted heading for this paper "Take the money and run like a thief". The following hypothetical case studies show that the high technology solution is not always the best financial solution.

"Solvent extraction of copper pregnant solution (PLS) obtained from ammonium peroxodisulfate assisted leach was modeled using response surface methodology. Mixing speed, pH, reagent concentration and organic to aqueous (O/A) ratio were selected for testing. A pitched blade mixer was used in the experiment. Mixer speed contributed significantly to copper extraction significant, while pH had minimal effect on copper extraction. The response model developed has an R2 = 0.97 and Adeq precision of 28.3. A parallel kinetic comparing study using a straight blade Rushton turbine in a turbulent regime of mixing showed no difference (p-value =0.308) between peroxodisulfate assisted leach PLS and conventional ferric/sulfuric acid leach PLS- the power draw data support this conclusion. INTRODUCTION High arsenic chalcopyrite concentrates are a problem to the smelters all over the world due to high arsenic gas emissions during smelting. Therefore leaching is often the alternative for extracting the copper in these concentrates if dilution with low arsenic concentrate is not possible. High-pressure autoclave leaching is used. Alternatively, the use of stronger oxidants such as peroxodisulfate has been proposed [16, 18]. There is a concern brought up by the hydrometallurgy community about the faith of the organic extracting reagent coming into contact with stronger oxidant residue in the pregnant leach solution (PLS) and hence the efficiency of such extraction process. This work, therefore, looks to answer such concerns. PLS generated from leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate with the peroxodisulfate ion was used in this solvent extraction experiment. As a liquid-liquid extraction, solvent extraction involves contacting the aqueous PLS with organic extractant via mixing. Mixing is known to increase the interfacial area for mass transfer by decreasing the diffusion path length (Jussi et al.1997). EXPERIMENT Instruments and Reagents Reagent grade Acorga 5910 reagent was used in the experiment was supplied by Cytec (Current name Solvay), Ammonium peroxodisulfate and sulfuric acid were reagent grade obtained from Amazon. Apparatus The solvent extraction tests were carried in a 2000 ml plastic cylindrical reactor equipped with four 0.5” baffles. In the hypothesis test, the reactor was a 4000 ml cylindrical reactor with four 1” thick baffles arranged evening in the reactor. This paper considers the international market trends of the rare earths and how they are strongly influenced by the by-product/co-product nature of their mining and processing. The two main economic minerals for the rare earths are bastnasite and monazite. Monazite is primarily a by-product of mining ilmenite and rutile and is affected by changes in these markets as well as the presence of thorium. Bastnasite is a by-product of mining iron ore in China and a stand-alone product in the USA. The paper will use conceptional relationships and empirical data to delineate the various by-products/co-products relationships and how they determine observed international market behavior.

The Tacoma, Washington plant is one of six plants in the United States Gypsum Company's Acoustical and Mineral Fiber Division. The Tacoma facility was acquired in 1959 along with six other mineral wool plants from the American Rock Wool Company. Originally, the Tacoma plant was built as a carbide plant during the Second World War and after that was converted and operated as a mineral wool plant by several insulation companies. Through these early years, the use of raw materials at Tacoma consisted primarily of slags along with small percentages and various combinations of silica (in various forms such as gravel), limestone and basalt. These raw materials were melted in cupolas using coke as the heat source. Raw material usage and types as well as mineral wool production methods and equipment remained without major changes for many years.

As noted by D.W. Fuerstenau in his Plenary Lecture at the Conference on Extractive Metallurgy of Gold and Base Metals, Kalgoorlie, Australia, "Com¬minution of solids is surely one of the oldest technologies that, even in this day and age of DNAs, chips and space exploration, continues to challenge our scientific acumen and engineering ingenuity." Thus, the fundamentals of comminution continue to receive a great deal of attention in the literature. This was particularly true in 1992 with the publication of the proceedings from the SME-sponsored symposium, Comminution Theory and Practice. Papers covering topics ranging from liberation to comminution fundamentals to novel size reduction techniques are included in this review. Liberation Liberation continued to be a prime area of research interest, not only in terms of liberation modeling, but also in understanding the basic mechanisms involved in mineral liberation. King (Comminution - Theory and Practice, pp. 3-15) described a method for determining the interphase area between mineral grains. He showed how the mea¬surement of interphase area before and after comminution could be used to determine the presence or absence of intergranular fracture. Lin, Miller and Cortes (Kona, Vol. 7) discussed the use of computed tomography (CT) as a nondestructive means of investigating three-dimensional particle composition. The use of this technique in constructing coal washability curves from CT data was presented.

Mexico City's growth has encourage development of underworks to meet drainage and transport requirements. Deep Drainage System has been constructed through a complex tunnel network, 108 km in total, varying from 30 to 12 m in depth and 6.24 or 4.00 m in diameter. Wide range of stability conditions presented in soils has forced the use of several tunnelling methods, going from the manual procedure by the use of pneumatic tools, to slurry shields, or open face shields, with the aid of or without compressed air. For transport, subway tunnels have been excavated in very compact silty sands, 9.15 and 9.51 m in diameter, with the use of open shields one of which was designed by Mexican engineers as a prototype machine. This paper tries to describe evolution of tunnelling methods used in Mexico City during last 20 years.

Heathrow Airport is owned and operated by BAA who are engaged in a major programme of expansion. In order to link the expansion of the airport in the west with the existing central terminal area, a twin bore, 8.8m outside diameter, road tunnel,1280m long, is being constructed. The tunnel drives pass over, with limited clearances, an operating railway tunnel, and pass under, with about one diameter cover, the airport taxiways and aircraft stands. Selection of the machine was heavily influenced by the need to minimise settlement.

New tunnels of significant alignment lengths such as mountain tunnels, base tunnels, as well as beneath urban centers pose unique environmental challenges. This paper highlights key environmental considerations for planning, design, construction, and operations by sharing lessons-learned from the authors' extensive project experience on these types of tunnels. Discussion of unique constraints include limited right-of- way, ventilation and emergency egress during the construction phase and revenue service, safety and security, and protection of existing structures. Practical approaches and applied innovative state-of-the-art solutions addressing distinct sustainability challenges and unique requirements are shared from US and international project examples.

In 1976, a decision was made by Anamax Mining Company to install an unusual conveying system to transport ore 10.3 km (6.4 mi) from the new Eisenhower Mine to the Twin Buttes concentrator. The system, supplied by Cable Belt Limited of the United Kingdom, represents a radical departure from conventional belt conveyors. The driving tension is applied through two endless wire ropes driven by a single 2 240 kw (3 000 HP) drive while the belt acts only as the ore carrying medium. Full production was begun in January, 1979. Start-up problems hampered production for several months but were resolved by a joint Anamax-Cable Belt effort. The system has been operating at design capacity for 4-1/2 years, and has proven itself as a reliable, low cost ore transportation system.

Introduction Hydrogen peroxide is known to the mining industry as a powerful oxidant, able to attack and to destroy cyanide, the most important leaching reagent (Knorre and Griffiths, 1984; Griffiths, 1988; Griffiths, 1988). CN- + H202 => OCN- + H2O The most recent development, however, is the use of H202 as an oxidant in the cyanidation of precious metals. This application may appear to be a contradiction to the above mentioned detoxification process. This can, indeed, be the case if certain conditions are not considered carefully. Degussa has developed a new process to enable the application of H2O2, in this field without having any detrimental effect on the cyanide. The incentive to seek an oxygen supplier like H2O2 instead of air was the fact that one of the most important conditions for the fast dissolution of gold is the presence of physically dissolved oxygen in the pulp (Kydryk and Kellog, 1954; Warstell, 1987). 2 Au + 4CN- + 1 /2 O2 + H2O => 2 [Au(CN)2]- + 2 OH Complete gold recovery within a reasonable leaching time may only be achieved if the pulp is saturated with dissolved oxygen. Gold losses in leach operations mainly occur due to the following reasons: • In some cases, the saturation of oxygen in the pulp cannot be achieved by aeration due to the difficulty to transfer oxygen from the gaseous into the liquid phase. This happens, for example, in pulps with a high viscosity. In such cases, even violent aeration only results in a low concentration of dissolved oxygen in the pulp. • In any case, the starting phase of leaching requires the highest amount of oxygen. Therefore, it is especially important to raise the dissolved oxygen level to saturation in the starting phase. Peroxide assisted leach process (PAL) The intention of the process is to introduce oxygen in a liquid form. As a result of intensive research work, it could be shown that hydrogen peroxide can be used as a source of oxygen in the leaching of gold ores. To avoid side reactions, the following conditions must be applied: • Hydrogen peroxide must be diluted before it is added to the pulp. • The dosage of H2O2, must be properly regulated based on the oxygen level of the pulp. • An important part of the continuous 02-control is a special oxygen electrode, which resists the extremely abrasive action of the pulp.

The selection of a suitable nitrate removal process depends on a variety of site-specific chemical and environmental issues. The dominant technologies for nitrate removal include biological denitrification and continuous countercurrent ion exchange. The decision to apply either of these technologies, or both together, depends on the nature of the waste water to be treated. Factors that affect the selection of the biological system include the feed composition and feed temperature. Ion exchange nitrate removal systems ere less sensitive to the feed composition but require disposal or destruction of the concentrated pregnant eluate. The paper discusses Tetra's continuous countercurrent ion exchange technology (CCIX™) and fixed film biological reactor, Denite®. The treatment of the ion exchange pregnant eluant is also discussed.

The United States Bureau of Mines conducted research on high-intensity magnetic separation methods for upgrading tantalum concentrates from Alabama. Process flow sheets were studied to maximize tin removal and minimize tantalum loss. Using laboratory-scale equipment, concentrates were produced which contained over 65% combined Ta2O5-Nb2O5. Up to 78% of the tin was recovered as a byproduct, containing about 70% SnO2. Only 1 to 5% of the tantalum reported with the tin byproduct. The producer subsequently incorporated high-intensity magnetic separation into its process flow sheet to provide concentrates for the National Defense Stockpile.
