Intense, tropical weathering of Cretaceous-Tertiary sediments has developed similar laterites in distant areas of the Amazon Basin. In two areas, Trombetas and Paragomina s, bauxites of commercial potential arc found. The bauxite comes mostly from the lower horizon of the three component laterite. The laterite is overlain by a clay cover, possibly an integral part of the weathered profile. The laterites are found on almost flat plateaus with individual areas of up to 80km2. There is a close relationship between the morphology and the ldterites. The process of lateritization is allegedly Pliocence but probably continues today.

The objective of this investigation was to study the electrokinetic behavior of oxidized coals to indicate the feasibility of separating oxidized coals from ash materials and pyrite by an mine flotation process. The effects of soluble inorganic electrolyte products from coal oxidation were also examined. The electrokinetic behavior of coals of different rank and degree of oxidation were studied by an electrophoreses technique. Generally, increasing the oxidation increases the negative value of the zeta-potential and decreases the isoelectric point (IEP). Flotation results indicate that the flotation recovery increases with decreasing pH values, and that with ferrous sulfate at pH 6.5 the flotation recovery is optimum while the pyrite was depressed. Comparing the flotation results with the electrokinetic results verified that in the presence of ferrous sulfate, the maximum hydrophobicity of oxidized coal with dodecylamine and frother is near its IEP which is around pH 6.5 to 7.0.

This paper addresses the use of the microcomputer programs BACKONE and BACKWEDG for an estimation of rock mass strength characteristics by back analysis of plane and wedge failures. The artificial support requirements are also determined by the programs PLANE2, BOLTPAT, and BOLTWEDG in terms of rock anchor installation angles, tensions, and installation patterns. These programs have been combined into a package called BACKPACK, which can be applied in open pit mines where some failures have already occurred.

The solvent extraction of vanadium (V) from Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution was attempted using Aliquat-336 (methyltrioctylammonium chloride) extractant dissolved in sulfonated kerosene as diluent with 2-octanol as phase modifier. The influence factors, such as Na2CO3 concentration, NaHCO3 concentration, temperature, extractant concentration and impurity P, on vanadiumextraction were investigated. The results revealed that the single stage extraction efficiency of vanadium reached above 89%from 20 g/L Na2CO3 – 20 g/L NaHCO3 solution under the following conditions: extractant concentration of 15%, room temperature of 20–30 °C, 2-octanol of 6%, phase ratio (O/A) of 1:1, and oscillation time of 1 min. The addition of NaHCO3 into Na2CO3 solution could lower the pH value of the Na2CO3 solution, improve extraction efficiency of vanadium, and not introduce other impurities. The phosphate anion did not interact with the vanadate anion in the Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution. The P in the Na2CO3–NaHCO3 solution had little influence on vanadium extraction.

The only good news in the exploration sector in 1982-a year plagued by low metal prices and weak demand-was precious metals. Gold in particular remained in the forefront, as it has for at least the past three years. The reason for this is partially due to gold's seeming resilience to conventional supply side factors-such as new production-that normally influence many other metals. Also, with projected production costs of about $6.40-$9.65/g ($200¬$300/oz), modest deposits with average grades can offer an early return on capital investment and good profit potential. Keeping escalating capital costs for new mining ventures within reason has shifted gold exploration efforts in recent years. Many mining companies are seeking relatively low grade, modest tonnage, near-surface gold mineralization. This, of course, leads to lower development costs using open-pit mining methods. Recent refinements in the carbon-in-pulp recovery process also has enhanced the economics of such deposits. Slumping economic conditions certainly played a key role in shaping exploration activity last year. Nearly every major mineral-producing state recorded exploration slowdowns. In Alaska, for example, development expenditures approached the level of exploration spending for the first time in the state's history. This not only reflects major companies' decisions to move toward production but also the economic slowdown. The worldwide recession stopped Nevada's exploration and mining boom "dead in its tracks," said John Schilling, state geologist. The year was one of layoffs and closings for the state's mines and exploration offices, he reported. Similar trends were noted in most other states, especially in the West and Southwest. In the Pacific Northwest, however, exploration appeared to continue at a relatively good pace considering the metals market. In the mining geophysical community, recent advances in telecommunications and microprocessor technology are continuing to provide a positive impact. Many geophysicists have begun using satellite digital communication links to access computer systems from remote sites where using a microcomputer would be difficult. There were also major contributions made in exploration geochemistry last year. Highlights include progress in formulating mineral deposit models, geochemical exploration in glaciated and arid environments, and publication of many informative books. The following state-by-state summary and articles on geophysics and geochemistry provides a detailed view of exploration events throughout the US in 1982.

This paper presents the ventilation design for an underground testing facility in a salt medium. The under-ground workings consist of two 3.6 m-diam (12 ft-diam) watertight shafts and about 1830 m (6000 ft) of drifting. These facilities are designed to provide access for an in situ testing of a salt horizon in which a variety of hazardous and nonhazardous materials could be temporarily stored or permanently deposited. The ventilation system includes a design basis for gassy mine conditions and provides for the option of bulk air cooling and heating.

In 1996, Rio Algom, Denison Mines and the Elliot Lake Research Field Station (ELRFS) formed a consortium to implement a regional environmental information management system (REIMS) for the Elliot Lake area in Ontario, Canada. ELRFS is an affiliate of Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, The discovery of uranium in the Elliot Lake region in post-World War II led to the development of 12 mines and 11 associated mills between 1955 and 1958. During the late 1980s, declining world demand for uranium, combined with the discovery of high-grade uranium ore in other areas of the world, made the Elliot Lake mines uneconomical. As a result, all area mines ceased opera¬tions by the end of 1996. The eight facilities and three tailings management areas operated by Denison Mines and Rio Algom's five mining waste management areas contain 150 Mt (165 million st) of potentially acid-generating tailings. The areas cover 13.2 km2 (3,265 acres) and receive drainage from an additional 13 km2 (3,212 acres). The primary objective of the joint initiative was to implement a personal-computer-based, regional, environmental-information management system for managing historical data and ongoing environmental programs in the Elliot Lake region. The Elliot Lake consortium decided it needed an information system with an integrated, process-oriented and requirements-driven approach to collect and manage the environmental information. Following a study of environmental information management systems currently used by the mining industry, the consortium decided to base REIMS on the "Envista" product. This is a commercially available, environmental information management system marketed by Envista Technologies of Saskatoon, Canada.

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center of the Mine Safety and Health Administration has developed the Mine Emergency Responsiveness Development (MERD) program to improve the reaction and response of mine personnel in mine emergency situations. The MERD program simulates problems that may be encountered in underground mine fires, underground mine explosions or surface mine accidents. Since its inception in 1982, the MERD program has been presented to MSHA, Industry, Labor and State Government Personnel. The program is extremely versatile and is easily adapted to suit various training requirements. It gives the participants the opportunity to experience some of the emotions, frustrations and successes of a mine emergency in a controlled environment without having to be involved in one. Past participants have indicated that this training has better prepared them in actual emergency situations through increased awareness and advanced preparation of plans and resources. In 1992, a Mine Simulation Laboratory, which simulates a coal mine and metal/nonmetal mine, was built to improve training for mine emergencies and prevention and fighting of mine fires. This facility has been included in the MERD Program to provide realistic and practical training for mine rescue teams and MERD participants in advanced mine emergency operations. This paper presents an overview of the MERD program.

This paper is about a horizontally curved conveyor, which carries 6,050 stph of limestone over land from a new quarry to the owner's plant. The conveyor is 5,012 ft long with a horizontal curve radius of5,OOOft Site conditions made a curved conveyor design the most optimal and economic solution. Using our unique custom conveyor calculation program, TKRI was able to accurately model and design the conveyor to properly track the belt and prevent any spillage through the horizontal curve radius. A data monitoring system was installed that allows monitoring of the conveyor both locally and remotely. The remote monitoring allows TKRI to contact the owner for preventive maintenance. Preventive maintenance can reduce the conveyor downtime during normal operating hours.

This paper deals with the search for the best practical means of storing sulphide bearing tailings, where there is no residual excess of carbonate material. It is the common experience that the sulphide content decomposes, with the aid of bacterial action, and the resulting sulphuric acid escapes, along with any heavy metal solutes, through embankments that are usually porous to some degree. The problem is typified in the tailings of the uranium operations of Elliot Lake, Ontario, where mining started some 20 years ago. The approach to tailings disposal paralleled the practice for other hydrometallurgical plants treating gold and base metal ores. Impoundment areas were designed to retain solids, and a clear and neutral overflow was considered satisfactory practice. Now experience has shown that these areas, some idle for over a dozen years, release acids, in seepage and overflows, to an unacceptable degree. To protect natural water courses neutralizing plants are operated wherever required. Lime slurry is fed continuously into the tailings outflows in a quantity sufficient to raise the pH to 8.5 and precipitate heavy metals that may be in solution. The objection to this procedure is that the plants will require servicing indefinitely, unless a better remedy is found.

The relative representation of the topics of research, how the research is performed, and who has performed the research have all changed significantly over these decades. Although there are a lot of subjective ideas concerning these changes, and there is a fair amount of anecdotal "analysis," there has been no actual study of these trends to verify the facts. During 1982, record advances have been achieved in the excavation of vertical shafts with a V-Mole (a vertical shaft boring machine). The V-Mole, supplied by Wirth GmbH in Erkelenz, West Germany, has been used in West German coal mines since the early seventies, mainly for the construction of internal shafts. In 1981, it was brought into the United States for the construction of a series of ventilation shafts with depths varying between 512 m (1680 ft.) and 622 m (2040 ft.) excavated to 7.0 m (23 ft.) diameter. These shafts were needed for the development of coal mines for Jim Walter Resources, Inc. in Brookwood, Alabama. After a description of the mechanized shaft excavation system with the V-Mole, the conditions and parameters, such as ground, shaft dimensions, and linings are discussed. These factors are important considerations for a technically and economically feasible utilization of the V-Mole. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of using the V-Mole technology in comparison to other shaft construction methods are evaluated.

Section 317(e) of the Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act of 1969 directed the Secretary of the Interior to prepare standards under which all working places in a mine shall be illuminated by permissible' lighting while persons are working in such places. Section 317(e) further provides that such Working places shall be illuminated within 18 months after such standards are promulgated. In accordance with this section of the Act, there was published in the Federal Register for December 31,1970 a notice of proposed ru1emaking which prescribed the illumination to be provided in the working p1 aces of underground coal mines. In 1ight of written comments, suggestions, and objections to this proposed ru1emaking, the proposed standards were with-drawn and reproposed in the Federal Register for Wednesday, October 27, 1971. In light of further comments, suggestions, and objections, a public hearing was held on April 4, 1974 and standards were again reproposed and published in the Federal Register for April 1, 1976. Promulgation of the final lighting standards took place on October 1, 1976 which means that the underground coal mining industry must comply with face illumination requirements by April 1, 1978. As mentioned previously, the first proposed ru1emaking for illumination of underground coal mines was published in the Federal Register on October 27, 1971. In early 1972, Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) and the United States Bureau of Mines agreed to a cooperative study of underground face illumination; Conso1 felt that expertise in this field would become increasingly important. Conso1's initial efforts in illumination were aimed at investigati.ng practical lighting systems for underground face equipment. We were concerned with installing unobtrusive lights which provided sufficient face illumination for safety, but at the same time were readily maintainable, electrically reliable, and physically sheltered from damage.

The design of an underground opening involves the coincidence of two highly complex and poorly specified components. First, the structural or mechanical characteristics of a geologic rock mass are not only extremely variable but are also very difficult to evaluate. Second, the general lay¬out of mine workings contains a large degree of indeterminancy as to the structure itself as a result of the indefiniteness of the mining process, and also because of the inherent redundancies associated with bulky and weighty structures. Even for the relatively simple problem of tunneling this complexity is well recognized to be "without question that to which the study of geo¬logy (for the Engineer) can most fitly and usefully be applied".1 It can, therefore, be appreciated that the comprehensive opening design problem involves a complicated assemblage of component structures made up of a sketchily defined, or sometimes even an undefined material and acted upon by largely unknown tectonic forces.

Up to now, the leaching of manganese carbonate ore is usually performed at high temperature of 363K and the leaching rate is lower than 90%. Although in laboratory test, the leaching rate is only 90%. This paper introduced an improved method for leaching of manganese carbonate ore. Certain ammonium salt was added to the pulp to raise the solubility of Mn2+ and reduce the adsorption quantity of Mn2+ on the ore surface. Experimental results show that a leaching rate over 95% can be obtained at the temperature >273K. The activation energy is calculated to be 7.15 KJ/mol and is lower than that of normal leaching technique. The effects of the parameters, such as particle size, pulp density and initial acid concentration on the process results are investigated. A leaching rate higher than 95% can be obtained under the following conditions: particle size below 0.25mm, leaching time 60 min, stirring speed higher than 960 r.pm. H2SO4:MnCO3>1 .2, pulp density 105-205 g.L-l. A kinetic model was deduced, verifying with actual experiments. It showed that the model can describe the leaching process successfully.

An innovative patented process has been developed to convert high volume wastes--fly ash from coal-fired power plants, municipal solid waste (MSW) ash from incineration, solids from waste water treatment and paper mill sludge into a high value and environmentally benign product in the form of a lightweight aggregate. Lightweight Aggregate is widely used in the building construction industry in the United States, Europe and some Asian countries. This paper will present the development of the process, the process itself and details on the first commercial scale plant. The commercial plant is owned and operated by Wisconsin Electric Power (WEPCO).

Someone once said, "The safest mine is one in which no one goes into." We all recognize this as being perhaps wishful thinking. We also recognize in it a certain amount of truth and an ultimate goal if we are optimistic. All of us are aware of the many things that have been done, are being done and will be done to reduce manpower in mining. For those of us; who are optimistic about this ultimate goal it would appear from the records-we are more than well on our way to the so called safest mine. Let us see what has been done in the past 20 years. T e period from 1935 to 1956. For example in the coal mining industry: In 1935 there were employed 462,903 men who produced an average of 805 tons per man per year or 4.50 tons per man per day. In 1955 there were employed 225,093 men who produced an average of 2,064 tons per man per year or 9.84 tons per man per day. There are no comparable figures compiled for the metal mining industry as a whole that can be broken down in this manner. However, from examination of figures available for different groups in metal mining there is a trend similar to that in coal mining. No-dbout the above figures reflect the intense development and perfection of machines and mining systems to tear out, transport and process our mineral wealth. The figures also show the mining industry has been able to double its production and at the same time reduce its manpower by half. When you compare the number of men employed today with the number which would have been employed 20 years ago to gain todays production at that time it become apparent that greater safety has been accomplished. For example the years 1935 to 1956 for all mining show. In 1935 there were approximately 649,226 men employed in mining and reports show 1,399 fatalities and 74,913 non-fatal injuries. In 1955 when there were 313,883 men employed in mining 496 fatalities and 25,365 non-fatal injuries were reported. To have produced the same tonnage of material in 1935 that was produced in 1955 it would have required the employment of approximately 1,298,452 men. 2,798 could have been fatalities and 149,826 could have had non-fatal injuries. You can now measure the full impact of what has been accomplished in the past 2o years by the aggressiveness of mine management, the wizardry of our engineering personnel and the thoughtfulness and devotion of our safety people and their programs. Therefore, there is a trend towards the goal of our opening statement. We whoare toptimistic believe this trend will accelerate at a-faster pace. Why? Because anyone engaged in the mining industry today can well afford to invest a minimum of $30,000.00 in capital equipment todisplace the labor of one man. This fact alone is a terrific incentive for mine management to apply and manufacturers to develop equipment of a type to get the men out of the mine. Now you can determine this problem not only becomes one of safety but also one of economics, When productivity is stepped up and manpower reduced management is learning the hard way what it means to them; in the profit and los s column when a few minutes of delay or downtime of costly machines and processes occur. They have learned that fast and efficient communication systems are the best means of combating breakdown, delays, bottlenecks, supply problems, the saving of lives and property and increasing production. One large western metal mine was able to increase Its tonnage by 4000 tons a day by using modernup to date electronic type communication system. The National Coal Board of Great Britain recently allocated 45,000,000.00 to study and develop faster and more efficient communications when a survey indicated what a serious bottleneck poor communication in their present systems of mining turned' out Lobe.

INTRODUCTION If a uranium mill worker is involved in an accident, analysis of excreta for uranium content and[in vivo] counting methods are used to estimate the extent of the possible exposure and to predict the pattern of uranium distribution among tissues (Spitz, [et al]., 1980). Interpretations of urinary excretion data are based on studies of human exposures to single uranium compounds including U02, U308, U03, UF4, U02F2 and UF6 (Alexander, 1974). Refined uranium ore (yellowcake) is a variable mixture of U03-NH3-H20 adducts (ammonium diuranate, ADU) and their thermal conversion product, U308. The variability in composition of yellowcake (Kalkwarf, 1979; Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) complicates the interpretation of bioassay data from individuals that might have inhaled any single yellowcake material. A test system would be useful to estimate the dissolution behavior of a particular yellowcake aerosol inhaled by a worker and aid in the interpretation of bioassay data collected before and after an accident. A series of experiments was conducted for this purpose. The objectives of these studies were to: 1) develop specific criteria for comparing [in vitro] dissolution systems and 2) use the criteria to evaluate solvents, methods and experimental temperature and pH conditions used in previous studies. Dissolution experiments were conducted using different combinations of solvents, conditions and methods with a common yellowcake sample. Because little information is available from human yellowcake inhalation exposures to evaluate the [in vitro] results, criteria for evaluation of different tests were derived from a model of yellowcake dissolution in lung constructed from a number of cases in which humans were exposed to single uranium compounds known to be in yellowcake (Mercer, 1975). MATERIALS AND METHODS Materials The powder used in the tests was taken from one lot of yellowcake obtained from a commercial uranium mill. The same powder was previously designated as Mill D in Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980 and Mill 2 in Kalkwarf, 1979. The ammonium diuranate content was measured by infrared absorption to be 25% ± 1% (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980). Solvents The compositions of the two biological fluid simulants used are compared in Table 1. Simulated lung fluid (SLF) (Kalkwarf, 1979; Dennis, Blauer and Kent, 1981) was chosen to simulate the composition [ ] of lung fluid as closely as practical (Moss, 1979). Simulated blood serum ultrafiltrate (SUF) (Eidson and Mewhinney, 1980) was chosen because of previous successful efforts to model human urinary excretion of inhaled plutonium aerosols (Kanapilly Raabe and Boyd, 1974) and the dissolution rate of 241Am02 in Beagle dogs (Mewhinney and Griffith, 1981). Major differences are that simulated lung fluid contains Mg2+ and a higher Ca2+ concentration than SUF and that SUF contains ammonium ion. Both solvents include protein substitutes; acetate is used in SLF, while amino acids are used in SUF. Both solvents include phosphate but the chelating agent diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) is included in SUF to prevent possible formation of insoluble uranyl phosphate precipitates that would result in an underestimation of solubility. In addition to the above solvents, modified solvent compositions were prepared to investigate the role of specific salts in yellowcake dissolution studies. Solutions of SUF (Table 1) were prepared without DTPA (SUF-DTPA) and without amino acids (SUF-amino acids). No solution excluded both DTPA and amino acids. Atlantic Cement Company's new multimillion dollar, 10,000,000 barrel per year cement plant went into full operation in February, 1962, bringing into reality a new concept in the distribution of Portland cement. The Cerro and Newmont Mining Corporations, well established in the mineral extraction and dressing industry, backed the venture. To take advantage of the, economics inherent in single production units of large capacity, it was necessary to first find a market' capable of absorbing such large quantities. Cement can be economically shipped by rail and truck about 200 miles. Beyond' that radius from the producing facility the freight costs become prohibitive. No single marker area within that radius exists which could absorb such a large volume of cement. However, water transportation provides a relatively inexpensive method of transporting bulk products many times over such a distance. Thus, it was decided to locate the producing facility near a deep water port which had ready access both to the Atlantic Ocean and, just as important, a good source of raw material. An extensive feasibility study was made and the site at Ravena, New York on the Hudson River near Albany was chosen. Here, vast quantities of limestone in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains are found within a short distance of-the deep-water Hudson River.
