Epithermal Ag-Au deposits form at low to moderate temperatures in near-surface environments. Historically, these deposits have been the source of high-grade ores. Increases in the market prices for gold and silver make lower-grade ores economically viable when available in large tonnages. Both the high-grade and bulk-tonnage ores are a consequence of the same processes, and general models of epithermal systems can be useful in the search for new precious-metal resources. A detailed study of deposits at Round Mountain, Nevada; Balei, Russia; Creede, Colorado; Guanajuato, Mexico; and Chanarcillo, Chile, indicates that the hydrodynamics of the fluid systems as determined by fracture geometries, the permeability, and composition of the host rocks are the key factors in the creation of both high-grade and bulk-tonnage epithermal deposits. End-member models that explain the range of observed deposit characteristics are: (1) the hot-springs deposition model; (2) the stacked-cell convection model (where mineral deposition occurs laterally along the interface of two partially separated fluid reservoirs); and, (3) the closed-cell convection model (where deposition occurs in vertical zones due to the relatively unimpeded vertical flow of hydrothermal fluids). Boiling and fluid mixing appear to be agents of precious-metal deposition with the self-sealing of the hydrothermal system being an important adjunct to boiling. Imaginative application of model concepts in exploration has led and can lead to the discovery of new high-grade and/or bulk-tonnage precious-metal deposits.

"From April 22 to 28, the eyes of the tunneling and underground construction world will be on San Francisco, CA, as the world’s most influential underground construction industry leaders gather at the Moscone Center for the 2016 World Tunnel Congress.Recognized as the most important international annual meeting for the industry, the 2016 version comes to the United States for the first time in 20 years and will be hosted by the Underground Construction Association of SME (UCA of SME). The conference will be held in lieu of the UCA’s biennial North American Tunneling Conference and will bring the strengths and resources of the UCA of SME and the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA). The result will be a conference with unmatched technical programming and a showcase of more than 200 exhibiting companies.A program committee led by Randy Essex of Mott MacDonald, Lonnie Jacobs of Frontier Kemper Constructors, Michael Mooney, of the Colorado School of Mines, Priscilla Nelson, of the Colorado School of Mines and Amanda Elioff of Parsons Brinkerhoff formed the program committee and worked for more than two years to build the program. The result is four technical sessions with five tracks in each session and 185 oral presentations.“One challenge was the sheer size of the group that would be assembled, perhaps 2,500 attendees or more, and the large number of abstracts we were likely to receive,” said Essex. “ We investigated extending the conference a fourth day, but that was not workable with the Moscone Center. We settled on having five concurrent technical tracks – something that has not been attempted in past NAT or RETC conferences to my knowledge. The next step was to develop suggested session titles that would span the breadth of subjects that would interest conference attendees as well as serve the conference theme.”"

This paper is concerned with the problem of calculating ground movement that occurs as a consequence of mining. Solution to this problem is straight forward in principle but rather complex in practice. The complexities of the problem arise from the ever present constraints of technology and economics. However, the identity of these constraints is often obscured by a faulty understanding of the fundamentals of the problem and a lack of appreciation of current computational capabilities and costs. As a consequence much time and effort are sometimes wasted on gathering information that is of little direct value to ground control programs while important input data are neglected. This paper therefore reviews the essentials of the process of formulating the ground movement problem. Emphasis is upon application to longwall mining, although much of the discussion applies to other mining methods as well. In many instances, the hardrock term stope could be substituted for longwall panel because the fundamentals of the problem are independent of the excavation dimensions and numerical values of rock properties. The latter affect the outcome of a calculation, of course, but not the underlying formulation. Only the major features of the problem are discussed in this brief review. The objective of the discussion is the generation of a reliable basis for developing a technically sound ground control strategy. Any rational ground control strategy must be consistent with basic physical laws. For example, under static conditions, equations of equilibrium must be satisfied. Operational, that is, tactical, details may vary widely with local conditions, but the basic approach must be based on physical laws. The alternative empirical route is intrinsically unreliable and unnecessary as well. Empirical descriptions of ground motion caused by mining including recent statistical curve fits to specialized data sets (for example, surface subsidence data) as well as antiquated "theories" of ground pressure and so forth, however dignified with mathematical formulas, are hardly worthy of the label "theory". Extrapolation of statistical data is always accompanied by rapidly diverging confidence limits, while empirical equations simply lack predictive capability under circumstances even slightly different from those of the original development. For example, applications of surface subsidence curves generated empirically in the United Kingdom to coal mines in the United States generally result in considerably greater subsidence and wider subsidence troughs than actually observed. Locally, empirical criteria for specific ground control actions may be made practical through trial and error, but such tactics are no basis for the development of a general ground control strategy. In this regard, it is worthwhile to recall the traditional scientific distinctions between speculation, hypothesis and law, between the empirical and the proven.

Over one million yards of granite were excavated for the Helms Pumped Storage Project, including a large underground powerhouse complex. Site investigations and in situ stress measurements were essential elements of the project design and provided the necessary geologic parameters for executing a finite element study of the powerhouse. A construction monitoring program, of geologic mapping, field instrumentation, and rock mechanics testing was then designed and has been successfully implemented. This paper reports on the scope of this construction monitoring program and explicitly compares the measured deformations to those predicted. As a result of this recent field experience the assumptions used in the finite element program are reexamined.

The main objective of this work was to quantitatively investigate exhaust emission levels relative to maintenance (service) intervals during the operation of diesel-powered equipment at an underground bauxite mine in Greece. Such emissions depend on a great number of parameters, including the type of engine (technology) and its tuning, the type of work performed (as related to the engine workload), the suggested maintenance intervals, the altitude, the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere in the underground mine, the properties of the fuel and the operator's training and experience levels. The necessary ventilation quantities were calculated based on exhaust gas-concentration measurements and site-specific relationships between pollutants and adjusted air-quality indices. Diagrams comparing the necessary and recommended airflow for several equipment groups, featuring two engine types and different maintenance intervals, are presented.

Tunnels and underground infrastructures assets, like all assets, deteriorate with time. At some point, they reach the end of their useful life. Therefore, frequent inspections, higher levels of maintenance, and rehabilitation are needed to address loss of life and safety concerns. The repair cost of tunnels will increase if maintenance of tunnels is not satisfactory and timely. Historically, tunnel inspections have primarily relied on visual and manual procedures. Due to their time-consuming nature and susceptibility to human error, there is a demand for alternative automated techniques that can enhance efficiency and reliability in tunnel inspection. By utilizing a tunnel scanning system, such as laser scanner and thermography, or photogrammetry system, tunnel inspection cost, time, and personnel can be reduced. The goal of this study is to utilize deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for automated identification of defects in tunnel lining inspection. This paper presents a framework to classify two types of defects in tunnel lining (water leakages and cracks) using CNNs. The CNNs were trained and tested using 4,608 images. The Precision, Recall, and F1 Score were each 99.6%, confirming the viability of this approach in the automated defect identification in tunnel lining.

Much of the land reclaimed since enactment of the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act is overcompacted. Research has shown that excessive compaction in replaced growing media is detrimental to the establishment of trees. If trees are to be grown on reclaimed surface mined sites, something must be done to alleviate this excessive compaction. Dry bulk density and penetration resistance are two soil parameters that can be used to indicate the level of compaction in reclaimed growing media. The University of Kentucky developed test cells on reclaimed areas at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky to determine the impact of tillage (ripping) on soil compaction and tree survival rate. The ripping methods being evaluated include shallow tillage using conventional farm equipment and deep tillage using a dozer with a ripping arm. Each test cell was planted with various species of trees, and for the first two years of tree growth, data were collected at these test cells for soil dry bulk density, penetration depth and resistance, and survival rate of trees. These data were statistically correlated to determine how ripping affects the relationship between soil compaction and tree survival rate.

Phase III and Phase IV of the Beaver Creek Clean River Project, Albany, NY, includes microtunnel construction of 2,320 feet of 48-inch/36-inch internal diameter (ID) conveyance pipe and a 525 foot long 9.5-ft horseshoe shape roadheader excavated tunnel. Notable challenges were encountered during the construction including mixed face tunnel conditions, undocumented existing fill ground conditions that resulted in settlement during shaft construction, and unstable tunnel face conditions. This paper discusses several of the key challenges encountered during construction and selected solutions to construction sequencing and methodology to successfully complete Phase III and Phase IV of the Beaver Creek Clean River Project.

Several factors contributed to continued declines in mineral-exploration activity in the US in 1985. Low metal prices and, what appears to be worldwide chronic excess capacity in copper, molybdenum, lead, and uranium, have resulted in mineral-exploration expenditures remaining anemic. Economic recovery could result in a healthier mining industry and more cash flow to fund exploration. This is because general economic activity and US mining industry activity have historically been closely linked. However, as the worldwide economic recovery has expanded, the mining sector has continued its downward slide. New cuts in industry exploration budgets in 1985 shocked those who thought the exploration situation could not become worse. Some personnel and equipment had been redirected from base metals exploration to precious metals in the past few years. Last year, continued reductions in exploration sent many professionals out of the mining industry. Recent staff reductions or consolidations of operations were made by Noranda, Chevron, Molycorp, and other exploration companies. The latest data from the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) summary of exploration statistics show that professional staff at year end in major US exploration companies (domestic and foreign operations) fell from 2355 in 1981 to 1868 in 1983 and 1277 in 1984. By the end of 1985, two economic trends were established that could improve the future profitability of mining and hence exploration. First, the price of crude oil began a decline. If sharply reduced energy prices increase worldwide economic expansion, the substantial excess capacity in some of the base metals industries could disappear, and prices could improve. Furthermore, if energy price declines reduce mining and processing costs significantly, metals may recapture some lost markets. The decline in oil revenues has already encouraged some oil-producing countries, such as Venezuela, to look toward development of mineral resources to earn foreign exchange for debt repayment. Second, the decline of the dollar by 21% during 1985 could also help US producers meet foreign competition. During 1985, industry restructuring continued as many oil companies sold off mining subsidiaries and minerals properties. Gold, silver in new discoveries Precious metals continued to dominate the announcement of new discoveries and exploration projects in 1985. A review of domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals shows that 60% to 80% of these projects were directed primarily at precious metals, particularly gold. Base metals exploration activities frequently involved polymetallic deposits with gold or silver values. Because much of this exploration was done on identified targets (on-property exploration), the decrease in wildcat or grassroots (off-property) exploration may be more substantial than indicated by reductions in total exploration activity. Significant gold discoveries in 1985 included several in Nevada, among them the Genesis property of Newmont (near the Carlin mine), Goldfields' discovery of the Chimney deposit in Humboldt Co., and Freeport's discovery of two mineralized sites near Jerritt Canyon. Gold exploration continued to be focused in the western US and Alaska, but gold production starts at the Haile mine in South Carolina, and the Ropes mine in Michigan as well as Amselco's feasibility studies on deposits near Ridgeway, SC, are evidence that gold exploration is not limited to the West. The dominance of gold projects in exploration is not limited to the US, as demonstrated by gold dis¬coveries and exploration projects in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean region, China, Guinea, Ivory Coast, South Africa, the South Pacific islands, and Thailand. From the standpoint of US metal miners, it is perplexing that worldwide exploration and development is also taking place in copper, zinc, tungsten, and other metals with depressed prices. During 1985, the US Geological Survey's efforts to map the sea floor of the Exclusive Economic Zone shifted from the Pacific Coast to the deep water areas of the Gulf of Mexico and to areas off the coast of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. An atlas containing sea-floor maps of the west coast area was published as US Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map 1-1792. Results of the 1985 surveys are expected to be published by January 1987. Exploration trends - Statistical evidence Data from the SEG showed continued decline in the US mining industry's exploration expenditures through 1984. The share of US companies' domestic exploration expenditures directed toward base and precious metals has increased from 51% to 84% from 1980 to 1983 and to 86% in 1984. US mining companies spent about $0.67 of each exploration dollar in 1984 in the US. However, this represents an increase from earlier years. The 1983 data also show that firms spending more than $5 million on exploration accounted for 77% of exploration expenditures. This paper describes some recent work on the identification and development of new chemical reagents aimed at improving the industrial processing of phosphate ores by froth flotation. In particular, three chemical product families which will be discussed appear to offer enhanced flexibility by: 1) utilizing a small amount of a silica control reagent which can significantly reduce the amount of anionic (carboxylic) collector required for a given P2O5 recovery level; 2) utilizing a new anionic collector family which offers high P2O5 recovery and selectivity versus standard carboxylic collectors; and 3) utilizing another new anionic collector family which has, in some tests, allowed for selective removal of dolomite from apatite. Examples and use characteristics of each of these new chemical ideas will be presented.

Powder River Basin (PRB) mines were originally built to serve power plants designed specifically for their coal. Sulfur was the major concern, with BTU and sodium limiting the market for some. The Clean Air Act has extended the PRB market into plants converting from other coals. These new customers are more sensitive to constituents affecting boiler and precipitator performance. At the same time, the prospect of deregulation is forcing power companies to control cost more stringently than ever. Jacobs Ranch Mine has responded to the changing marketplace with an expanded coal quality and customer service program.

With the world’s ever-expanding push to expand technological capabilities, the need for specialized materials including rare earth elements has exploded. One source found in the USA is bastnaesite, a rare earth bearing fluorocarbonate mineral, currently mined at the Mountain Pass Mine in California. To increase production, it is essential to optimize existing processes and create new ones to better utilize current resources. Therefore, a US Department of Energy Critical Materials Institute sponsored research program was carried out at the Kroll Institute for Extractive Metallurgy to expand the fundamental understanding of the industrial bastnaesite concentrate leaching system. With the help of prior knowledge, thermodynamic calculations and design of experimentation based lab testing, a novel single-stage hydrochloric leach system was created to optimize the rare earth extraction from bastnaesite. Historically, the existing industrial process has utilized a two-stage leach system involving a high-temperature hydrochloric acid leach with liquid solid separations followed by a caustic crack stage of the leach residues. A series of single-stage leach experiments were run by reacting locked cycle flotation concentrates with hydrochloric acid to test common leaching parameters. The results of these patent pending single-stage tests have shown rare earth recoveries significantly higher than reported recoveries of historic two-stage caustic crack processes, all while decreasing the equipment required and the type and amount of reagents needed.

Three pits at the Getchell Mine contained water during a hiatus in mining activity (1968-1983). For this period, expected concentrations of As, C1, SO4 and TDS resulting solely 16om evaporative concentration were computed. Computed values are 1.6 to 2.3 times greater than those measured in local groundwaters. However, computed values fix As, SO4 and TDS are lower than measured values in the pit lakes. In some cases, the computed values are only 8% of the measured pit lake values, indicating a major control on water quality via water-rock interactions. In contrast, computed C1 values exceed measured pit lake concentrations.

Introduction Responding to Congressional inquiries regarding the purchase of a number of major domestic mining and metals companies by foreign firms, the US Bureau of Mines examined trends in foreign direct investment in the US. mining and mineral processing industries1. "Foreign Direct Investment in the US Minerals Industry" analyzes the extent of foreign investment in several major mineral commodity industries. It identified the countries of origin of foreign investment in US mineral assets. The study also described several reasons for the growth of foreign investment in US minerals and discussed some potential implications of this activity. Foreign investment trends in the economy and minerals For the economy as a whole, between 1977 and 1985 the number of US affiliates of foreign investors more than doubled - from 4046 to 9824 - as did employment at these affiliates - from 1.2 million workers to 2.9 million (Table 1)2. During this same time period, the total value of assets of all US affiliates throughout the economy rose from $239 billion to $736 billion (1985 constant dollars). In the domestic minerals industry, foreign investment also grew substantially during that same time as the number of US minerals-related affiliates increased by 74% - from 125 to 217 - between 1977 and 19853. During the same period, employment at all foreign-owned affiliate mineral operations in this country increased by 78% and totaled 198,000 workers at the end of 1985. Parallelling the growth in the number of and employment at foreign-owned US mineral and metal operations, the total value of US mineral assets owned by foreign firms (or individuals) has nearly doubled since 1977 and amounted to $30.9 billion at the end of 1985. The rate of increase in foreign investment in US mineral assets was slightly higher in the metals industries than in the nonmetallic groups. Foreign investment more prevalent in minerals Perhaps a more useful way of evaluating the growth in foreign investment is to analyze growth in the "intensity" of foreign investment - the proportion of total US industry assets held by foreign investors. Although insufficient data on total industry assets prevented the development of such a measure, employment data provide an indication of relative differences in the intensity of foreign investment among the mineral industries and other industries. For example, as noted in Fig. 1, the 198,000 minerals industry workers employed at US-affiliate companies in 1985 represented 12.7% of total employment in this sector of the economy. In comparison, for the mining and manufacturing sectors of the economy as a whole, 7.8% of all workers were employed at US-affiliate firms in 1985. For the total economy, 2.7% of the entire civilian employed workforce worked at US-affiliate firms that year. Using employment as an indicator, foreign investment has been more prevalent in the minerals industry than in most other industries. About one worker in eight in the minerals sector was employed at a US-affiliate firm in 1985. "The history of the mining industry is littered with in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC), which should not be confused with the International Protocol for Carbon Capture, projects that failed. The failure is not the technical one of “did it achieve the desired tonnage rate for a longish test period” but, rather, the far more important one of “did it provide return on the investment in the manner that was promised?” While quite a few can claim the former, very few system installations can claim the latter.The reasons for the many failures are numerous, but they are all characterized by a combination of an element of engineering optimism in any, or all of the production rates, the productivity, or the operating and maintenance costs and in predicting the continuity of operating conditions. In these days of big data, propagating such a situation is rapidly becoming unforgivable.In this article, the three most common scenarios put to the corporate board for approval, and the logic as to why they were selected, are examined (with the irony included intentionally).• Fully mobile crusher, fed by a shovel and conveyed out of the pit to a waste dump / process plant.• Semimobile crusher (much more expensive than a fixed crushing station but which apparently allows trucks to short haul inside the pit and improve productivity), which moves when the face moves.• Relocatable crusher (more expensive than a fixed crushing station but which gets relocated at great expense after all the fixed infrastructure impeding relocation is demolished) fed by trucks that don’t leave the pit mostly.This paper will also consider the truth about their operational performance and associate costs."

Artificial intelligence, and especially expert systems, are currently receiving considerable attention. Of interest to the control engineer is the utilization of these tools for real-time process control applications. To evaluate this technology, a real-time expert control system was implemented in one of the grinding circuits at Brenda Mines Ltd. The performance of this micro computer based expert system compared satisfactorily to the proven supervisory control system currently in use. The study confirmed the expectations that expert systems have potential for real-time, supervisory control of mineral processing operations.

The Congress gold property, located near Goldbridge, B.C., is extremely refractory with most of the gold disseminated in fine- grained arsenopyrite. Metallurgical testwork conducted by Giant Bay Biotech Inc. indicated that biooxidation pretreatment was capable of increasing cyanide gold recovery from the ore to greater than 90%. To determine if the bioleach process could be successfully scaled up, a 225 cubic meter commercial size bioleach reactor was built and tested at the mine site in 1989. At that time the tank was the largest bioleach reactor ever operated. This paper discusses our experiences in operating the tank, summarizes some of the data obtained and describes the problems encountered.

Special attention must be considered in the production of high-grade rare earth products, such as mixed rare earth oxalates or carbonates. In the main minerals used industrially, the rare earth elements (REEs) are finely associated with impurities like calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), thorium (Th), uranium (U) and phosphorus (P). Most of these impurities must be removed to avoid losses of rare earth oxides (REOs) as well as to prevent product quality degradation and low operational performance in the downstream steps of solvent extraction or ion exchange. The present study aims at investigating the conditions required to precipitate REEs, either as rare earth oxalates or carbonates, from purified rare earth sulfuric liquor with low Al3+ and UO22+ concentrations and very high Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, and SO42− impurity contents.

"We hear all the time about the value of hard work and perseverance, and the part they play in the professional life of successful people. What we do not hear so much about are the many professionals who work hard and persevere, yet never seem to quite reach the level of success they aim for. Some current authors are beginning to give more attention to the part luck/black swans/outliers play in success. This is not a new phenomenon, Machiavelli had a lot to say about it back in the Renaissance. So how can knowledge of this dynamic help in a modern organization? INTRODUCTION Work hard and you will succeed. Go to the right school, major in the right degree, study hard, and get a good job. Look at the lives of successful people, and do what they do. Be all that you can be. You can be anything you want to be. Really? Those who are successful always get attention, people want to know what they did to reach such a high position. Invariably, at least part of their narrative will include hard work, wise insight, taking advantage of opportunities, etc. If they are of a more generous nature, they might also allow that building the right friendships and collaborations also played a role. All of this may be true; what we do not often hear are the stories of those who did all of these very same things, but did not find success. An example from pop culture: The Voice. I have watched this show occasionally the past couple of years. One of the things I like about the show is that the initial screening of contestants is based solely on their singing voice (hence the name of the show), and not on their appearance. At the time of this writing (early November), the judges have just finished elimination rounds for their final teams to go on to the live shows. Here is my point—in almost every case the judges agonized over choosing who would go forward and who would be eliminated. And the reason is because all of them are really talented singers. It is impressive how gifted they are. At the end of each season, only one is declared a winner, out of that gifted pool of singers. When you hear their stories, they are all talented, hard-working individuals sacrificing for their art. And as far as I know, none of them has ever become a star. Hard work, dedication, sacrifice, talent—sometimes it is enough, sometimes not. I will be looking at the part uncertainty/luck/black swans play in our lives, but I want to make it clear at the beginning that I am not saying everything that happens to us is out of our hands or beyond our control. Taleb makes this same point (2007, p. 52): “This problem is chronic: if you tell people that the key to success is not always skills, they think that you are telling them that it is never skills, always luck.”"
