A significant news item appearing in a coal mining journal in November 1969 stated simply that a Caterpillar D-333-CNA engine had received Bureau of Mines Schedule 31 approval. This item occurring at the time a new mining property in Martin County of East Kentucky was being prospected and prepared for mining, resulted in the manage-ment of Martin County Coal Corporation asking the question, "Why not use diesel equipment in our new operation?" Martin County Coal Corporation is part of the A. T. Massey Coal Company, Incorporated organization. The property being developed is on a 17,500 acre leasehold obtained from Pocahontas Land Corporation and lies in the Wolf Creek area of Martin County. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this undeveloped section of Kentucky to tap a huge reserve of steam coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all of the production from Martin County Coal Corporation mines which ultimately is projected to be 2,000,000 tons annually. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton are being deep mined now and it is in those mines that the diesel haulage equipment was introduced. This paper will endeavor to trace the steps loading to the introduction of the first diesel-powered Wagner Mining Equipment Company ScoopTram in a coal mine in America. It will further elaborate on the features which make this unit a very versatile and useful utility unit as well as the safety features which are incorporated in the machine. During the early 1960's, a method was developed for refining sand from the Arkansas River to produce a feldspathic product that was proposed for use in making colorless glass. Because of the need for chemical uniformity, a cooperating glass manufacturer specified certain ranges of percentages for each chemical constituent of the sand. These specifications were met by fulfilling the single requirement that alumina vary by no more than 20.1 percent from the specified value. This translated to a total variation of only about 1 percent in the feldspar content of the mixed quartz-feldspar products. Because the feldspar was lighter than the quartz, the average density of refined sand varied depending on composition. Densities, determined to five significant figures, of several samples were correlated with their chemical analyses, and the correlation could then be used with density determinations to more reliably indicate compositions than by chemical analyses only. The effects of several variables on the composition of refined sands were studied. There was a regular variation in the proportion of feldspar with screen size. A series of samples with their natural size distributions were more nearly uniform in composition than the same sands after screening and recombination. The screening and recombination process was done so that the sands had identical size distributions. Variations in the refining showed little effect on composition. A pile of flow-back sand from a construction sand washer was found to be severely segregated. However, samples taken from many points in the river near the sand plant and from the flow-back discharge pipe over several weeks very nearly met the uniformity specification. If care was taken to avoid segregation either before or during processing, it should be possible to meet the uniformity specifications for a feldspathic glass sand.

Land subsidence had been observed in recent years throughout the Southwest. Particular examples of this phenomenon that have gained wide publicity axe in the Long Beach and Central Valley areas of California and, the Houston area of Texas. Less well known is the fact that the land surface Is subsiding in many parts of Arizona, including the Phoenix area. The causes of this problem vary from place to place, as do also the rates of subsidence. In Houston it has been related to pumping water from artesian aquifers; in Long Beach to the development of oil fields; and in the Central Valley to both the lowering of artesian pressures in deep aquifers and the wetting of poorly consolidated surficial deposits. The mechanism by which subsidence occurs in southern Arizona, even though it can be correlated with the continued lowering of ground water levels, is not as apparent as in these other cases. It is the purpose of this paper to examine both the causes and affects of land subsidence in southern and central Arizona.

Increases in the price of gold starting about five years ago, and rapid fluctuations since then, have caused a substantial popular interest in the noble metal. Gold prospecting had been at low ebb since the end of World War II in most of the United states except for a flurry of activity in Nevada occasioned by the Carlin and Cortez discoveries. The last five years, however, have seen a great awakening of interest in gold exploration as well as an opportunity for education for many explorationists in the geology and other vagueries of gold deposits. The present writers have participated over the last few years in a search for gold deposits throughout the United States. This search was greatly influenced by the geologic studies of Dr. Wm. Spence at the Haile Gold Mine in South Carolina as reported in a companion paper. Spence's studies resulted in definition of a geologic model that has proven useful in a number of other geologic environments in the united states. These programs were all carried out under the auspices of Cyprus Mines Corporation and permission by Cyprus to present these results is gratefully acknowledged. The writers, however, reserve for themselves all responsibility for the results and conclusions. The exploration program to be described began in the southeastern United States. Spence's studies provided a reasonable basis for interpreting and understanding the geology of the Haile deposit and also provided a means for predicting additional occurrences. This concept was then expanded to other gold occurrences in the Piedmont and became an effective tool for evaluating other prospects. Finally it became evident that the concept could be applied in some western gold districts. The following discussion will then include descriptions of other Piedmont examples and a few western districts that also appear to fit the pattern.

The fluidized bed is an effective method for investigating retorting phenomena and possibly a commercial means of retorting oil shale. Both were examined by Sinclair Oil Corp. (now part of Atlantic Richfield Co.) in the period 1.965 to 1968. The results of the work show that presence of an oxidizing environment during retorting results in loss of oil yield which indicates that vapor phase oil burns in preference to combustion of coke on spent shale. This has implications for several types of retorts. Correlation of the results of this work with that of other investigators shows that the partial pressure of retorting products in contact with oil shale during retorting has an effect on yield. Consideration of hardware indicates that there are several possibilities for commercial embodiment. As a companion to shaft-type retorts the fluidized bed could have good potential. Realistic assessment of costs suggests that further development may have to await commercialization of another process. The existence of a plant in which to test prototype size would markedly reduce such development costs. Results Preliminary development work with the apparatus was carried out using a fluidized bed of sand, as explained later, with the entire system brought up to temperature and flows stabilized. The shale was injected rapidly in a slug (batch) which had small mass compared to that of the high temperature system to make the reaction approach isothermality with reasonable approximation of instantaneous preheating. Typically, the temperature in the center of the bed dropped from 900°F to 600°F one minute after batch addition. It returned to 750' within three minutes and 900° within seven minutes. Obviously, the bed was quenched but it recovered rapidly. Average bed temperatures of 700' to 1020°F were examined to compare the effect of temperature with published results. Yields In the 700°F range were only 10 to 15%, of Fischer Assay (FA). Above about 950'F, oil yields decreased and gas yields increased. Nitrogen was used first as the fluidizing gas to provide a chemically inert medium. Incept for an insignificant dip at 895"F, Figure 1, oil yield was not affected by retorting temperature in the 800° to 900' range as long as residence time was adequate (16 minutes). At 925°F, the oil yield was some 103% FA. With further increase in temperature, the yield decreased to 86% FA at 1015°F. There is no increase in carbon on spent shale, the lost oil goes to Increased gas make.

An extensive geotechnical instrumentation program was undertaken during the construction of a 6.7 m (22 ft) inside diameter tunnel to monitor the ground-structure response and to check assumptions made for design. The tunnel was advanced through sedimentary and igneous rock using a fully shielded tunnel boring machine (TBM) with both temporary support and final lining provided by precast concrete liner plates erected in the tail section of the TBM. The parameters measured and evaluated include rock deformation, strain in the precast concrete liner, changes in tunnel cross section and groundwater response. In addition, an automated camera system is described which was mounted on the TBM to provide a continuous photographic record of the bedrock conditions exposed at the tunnel springline. The performance of various types of instrumentation equipment in an underground construction environment is also evaluated.

"Ed Rapp is among those who believe in the saying that necessity is the mother of all invention. Rapp is the president of Caterpillar’s mining group. As such, he is tasked with leading the world’s largest mining equipment maker, and its customers, through this time of lower commodity prices, while also positioning his company to be prepared for better days that lie ahead.The decade-long mining boom fueled by growth in emerging markets and demand for commodities that led to record prices for some metals paused in 2008 with the global financial crisis. However, according to Rapp, thanks to stimulus packages around the world, and in particular the stimulus from China that was focused on infrastructure, the mining sector recovered fairly quickly, and from 2010 to 2012, mining was strong.And then the stimulus stopped. Credit dried up and global growth began to slow down and, in the three years since, commodity prices have declined by an average of 60 percent. Caterpillar expanded during the boom, acquiring Bucyrus, and investing billions into the mining sector. It has felt the pinch of the slowdown as much as any mining company in the world. These pages, and those of other mining publications as well as mainstream media, have been filled with stories of doom and gloom about the industry. But Rapp, while acknowledging that the difficult times have been painful, also said Caterpillar sees opportunity in the slow down and reaffirmed his company’s commitment to the mining industry as absolute."

INTRODUCTION This chapter will discuss, both from fundamental and practical points of view, the flotation of non-sulfide min- eral s. The flotation characteristics of silicates, salt-type minerals, oxides and coal will be reviewed. Dup- lication of the thorough and excellent presentations by many authors is not intended and a comprehensive list of references is included. GENERAL PRINCIPLES Collectors for Non-Sulfide Minerals : All minerals, with only a few exceptions are readily wetted by water, that is, they are said to be hydrophilic. The purpose of a collector is to coat the mineral surface and render it hydrophobic, preferring an environment of air over an environment of water. Relative to sulphide minerals, the non- sulfides are more naturally hydrophilic and therefore, require a collector with a greater chain length. This is accomplished by using a collector which has a proportionally longer hydrocarbon chain. Both anionic and cationic flotation collectors are used in non- sulfide flotation. Anionic Collectors. These are collectors which ionize in solution to give a negatively charged radical. They have the general structure R-A, where R is a hydrocarbon having 8 or more carbon atoms and A is a hydrogen or an alkali metal. The most common collectors in this group are fatty acids which could have saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon chains. Such chains may be straight or branched. The configuration of the chains affects their solubility in water and their adsorption characteristics. In general, as the chain length increases the adsorption and the collecting power increases. However, it should be noted that the solubility decreases. The solubility of unsaturated chains is greater than that of saturated fatty acids because double or triple bonds are polar and thus attract water molecules. Solubility data for collector metal salts, even though important for a proper understanding of flotation are not available for all collector systems. Solubilities and structures of different fatty acids are reported by Fuerstenau (1982). Values for the solubility products of fatty acid salts selected from a paper by Du Rietz (1958) are given in Table 1.

In January of 1969 the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare, through the National Air Pollution Control Administration, published a series of Air Quality Criteria (4'S) and Control Techniques (6,7) for air pollutants in compliance with the 1967 Clean Air Act which will affect the operation of all fuel burning equipment in the very near future. The design of equipment for the future which will use fossil fuels will also be affected. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the modifications which might be anticipated in the future for fuel burning equipment. One class of the several air pollutants looked at first by the USDHEW was the sulfur oxides. Other pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, will be studied and controls for these will supposedly be written in due time. The obvious use of low-sulfur fuels, coal, oil and natural gas is suggested by the Control Technique(6). Conversion to other sources of power, such as nuclear energy and hydropower, is also suggested. The statement is made that since possible hydroelectric sources are limited and nuclear plants are not yet available on a large scale, the changeover to these sources of power will not be overnight. The bulletin (6) suggests that one possible solution in some areas may be the use of low sulfur coals for short periods of time during periods of severe air pollution. A curve showing the effect of this was given in the 1969 April issue of the Power magazine, where A. E. Boyer and F. B. Kaylor of Stone and Webster also described a computer program called DOSAGE which might be used to check weather, temperature, humidity, wind direction and velocity, and sound an alarm when that 0.1% of the time per season is here that requires the use of low-sulfur fuel. Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation's (KACC) entrance into the alumina market began in 1946 with the purchase of a small plant in Baton Rouge. Louisiana. Since that time KACC has been involved with the design, construct; on, and operation of many alumina plants around the world. One of these plants is located in Gramercy, Louisiana. The Gramercy Works is a multiplant installation consisting of an alumina plant, a caustic-chlorine plant, a petroleum coke calciner and a fluorochemicals plant. Each of these plants require their own specific environmental control programs to abate pollution. Kaiser has made significant progress through the years on their own initiative in pollution control. But many new challenges have been and continue to be created with the enactment of environmental laws. The 1970 Clean Air Act Amendments, the resurrection of the old "Refuse Act" in 1970 and finally the 1972 Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments prompted the formulation of our current philosophy towards the abatement of pollution. Since the formulation of these complicated pieces of legislation, others equally complicated, have come to being. The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act as amended by the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act of October, 1972, the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, the Solid Waste Disposal and Resource Recovery Act of 1976 and the Safe Drinking Water Act sighed in December of 1974 have all contributed to the challenge for an alumina plant to meet regulatory constraints. However, this paper will only discuss the alumina plant?s environmental programs designed to meet compliance with air and water pollution legislation. At the Gramercy Alumina Plant, over $25 million has been spent for pollution control since 1969. The Gramercy Plant is a prime example of KACC's commitment to meeting the environmental challenge.

A program of geological research in support of mineral exploration efforts is outlined. Specific goals are stated, approaches to accomplish their attainment are described, and the type of useful results to be expected are outlined. Because mineral exploration or prospecting has intensely practical goals, research in support of it must be applied research, applied to the problem of maintaining or increasing the discovery rate of the exploration effort. To attain research goals, attention to personnel selection, group structure, and program are critically important, and in about that order. A large percentage of the professional personnel should have had experience in mining geology or mineral exploration, and they all should be prospector-oriented. Structuring in the group should be at a minimum, with wide allowance for the kind of independent research which is essential to the nurturing of on-target creativity. The program should be field-oriented, and it should include a wide representation of those subdisciplines of geology which are applicable to mineral exploration. The types of results to be anticipated include improved or new conceptual models for various types of orebodies and their settings from which new ore guides can be derived, new exploration techniques, and the development of a knowledge bank for various aspects of the exploration effort.

Ore reserves in the Republic mining district were nearly exhausted in 1984 when hole D-54 intersected a vein twenty- eight feet in drill width averaging 1.57 opt gold and 11.95 opt silver below post-mineral lake beds. The discovery area, termed "Golden Promise", has announced proven and probable ore reserves of approximately 372,000 tons averaging 1.0 opt gold and 4.5 opt silver, and drilling indicates another 756,000 tons of mineralized material containing 0.37 opt gold and 1.4 opt silver (Hecla fourth quarter 1986 report). This paper describes new geological interpretations made as part of a district research study sponsored by Hecla Mining Co., which led to the D-54 discovery. Important new geological concepts include: 1) re-interpretation of the volcanic stratigraphy of the district and recognition of a suite of pyroclastic rocks that are unique to the Republic graben, 2) identification of disseminated subaerial mineralization at a paleosurface that corresponds to the newly described upper contact of the Sanpoil Volcanics, 3) recognition that epithermal veins have a maximum productive vertical range of 0-500 meters, measured from the paleosurface, and 4) veins exhibit visual and geochemical vertical zoning within the productive zone with highest gold occurring at an optimal depth, which is interpreted as the average depth of hydrothermal boiling.

Pebble phosphate deposits of Florida have been established from south of Hardee County to north of the Georgia state line or a distance of over 200 miles and mining has been carried out in an ever-increasing scale since 1885. Deposits that can be mined on the economical standards of today, however, are confined in a roughly circular area about 30 miles in diameter, generally within Polk and Hillsborough Counties, in the central part of the State. The phosphate deposit, which is in the Bone Valley formation of the Pliocene age, is covered by Pleistocene terrace deposits of unconsolidated quartz sand. The matrix is composed of approximately 1/3 clay slimes, 1/3 silica sand and 1/3 phosphate pebbles. The phosphate occurs usually as rounded pebbles, ranging in size from about 1 inch down to approximately 400 mesh. The phosphate may vary from well- defined hard pebbles to soft weathered rock. The color and character of the phosphate will range from smooth buff pebbles to black and white or "salt and pepper rock." The screen size distribution varies considerably between locations and the recoverable phosphate varies may extend down to the 400 mesh size in some areas, while in others the phosphate may cut off sharply at about 35 mesh.

"The use of gas, temperature and airflow sensors to monitor mine ventilation atmospheres offers numerous safety and operational bene-fits to mines. Detection of dangerous gases, changes to airflows and temperature variations are some of the obvious benefits of using at-mospheric sensors in mines. The prediction of atmospheric conditions between sensors however is potentially difficult, and gaining full cover-age a mine will require either many sensors or a method of extrapolat-ing and predicting atmospheric conditions between and downstream from a sparser array of sensors. A dynamic simulation computer model technique is demonstrated to predict time based changes to atmosphere conditions downstream from sensors. The dynamic model predicts the time based changes to conditions throughout a mine model by simulating the mixing, addition and dilution of gases and airflow changes in incremental time steps. The advantages of this method is that a real time overview of full mine atmospheric conditions can be viewed at all locations, even areas without sensors. In addition, with careful planning and consideration of potential contaminant sources, the number of required sensors can be minimized. INTRODUCTIONMine Ventilation Sensors The importance of continuously monitoring mine atmospheres has been recognised since mining underground began and the effects of harmful gases on human health were discovered. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries, coal miners would take canaries underground with them as an early detection system against life threatening gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane (Figure 1). The canary, normally a very songful bird, would become agitated, stop singing and eventually die if not removed from these gases, signalling the miners to quickly exit the mine (Davalle, 2011)."

The announcement of a high-grade ore intercept near Wenatchee, Chelan County, WA, by Asamera Minerals in 1983 triggered widespread interest in this old gold mining district. The district has a long history of exploration and production and was actually one of the few underground gold mines that operated in the post World War I1 years in the US. Gold occurs in a north-trending structural zone in folded and faulted Eocene arkose intruded by andesite and dacite dikes having dates in the 42 to 50 m.y. range. Ore has been mined selectively from ladder veins perpendicular to the trend, from the south end of the trend near Squilchuck Creek. These veins narrow and silicification becomes pervasive northerly where wider zones were caved later in the operation. Recent discoveries at "B" reef at the north end are also in wide zones of silicified arkose. The gold lodes originally cropped out as prominent silicified and iron-stained ridges that were described in the early days as "reefs." The early discoveries were made in out- crop about a hundred years ago, and two claims, the Gold King and Macbeth lodes, covering the most prominent out- crops on the north side of Squilchuck Creek, were staked in 1885 and patented shortly thereafter. A five stamp mill was erected in 1894, but failed to liberate gold for amalgamation. The two patented claims were acquired in 1934 by J. Keegan, who carried out limited exploration and shipped small amounts of flux ore to Tacoma during the next few years. There was no substantial exploration or development of the claims, however, for several years after that time, and ownership of the claims eventually passed to a series of trusts administered by a bank in Seattle.

The demand or consumption of fluorspar has been somewhat taken for granted in recent years, except for the specific interest of those that produce, market, and/or consume the commodity. A tradition was established of thinking that as the steel and aluminum industry goes, so goes fluorspar. This is much less true today than in the past. The industry is becoming more dependent on chemical industries that feed primarily off hydrofluoric acid (HF) production. The Bureau of Mines recently published an assessment of world fluorspar reserves and resources that created a foundation of valuable data that can be used to monitor fluorspar availability. Celebrations were held this year commemorating the 100th anniversary of the isolation of fluorine. The United States and other countries continue to struggle with the controversy of ozone depletion and the effect of fluorocarbons on the atmosphere. The goals for the U.S. Government's strategic stockpile are being reevaluated. The market for fluorine chemicals is changing and diversifying, making it a challenge to assess and forecast fluorspar/fluorine demand. This paper reviews the recent past of fluorspar and helps set the stage for a more detailed assessment of this critical commodity.

Zinc ores were first discovered in Tennessee in 1856 at Jefferson City where a deposit of oxidized ore became known as the Mossy Creek Mine. From that time until 1913 small scale attempts at prospecting and mining were made in various parts of the district. The actual systematic development of the zinc deposits dates from 1913 when the American Zinc Company started operations at Mascot. Six mines are in operation by three companies and a seventh mine is being developed by a fourth company. The total daily production from the field is 11,000 tons of crude ore, which grades from 3 to 6 per cent zinc. Most of the ore bodies are large and ramiform, resembling asyrmetrical networks in which the ore shoots form channel like branches with areas of non-comercia1 rock, called blank islands. Most of the orebodies are adapted to large scale mechanization.

Although techniques and practices of mining are highly advanced, coal pillar bursts or bumps continue to occur. Many uncertainties remain because of the highly anisotropic characteristics of coal seams that are associated with geologic structure and the mining-induced spatial redistribution of stress in coal pillars. Thus, to prevent fatalities in underground coal mining, continuous efforts are required to better understand the catastrophic failure mechanisms in coal mines. In this study, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the Discrete Fracture Networks (DFNs) technique was performed to better understand the true anisotropic behavior of the specimens acquired from a bump-prone underground coal mine. The spatial characteristics of the dis- continuities (i.e., cleats and bedding planes) as input data for the 3DEC model are estimated based on the results of the laboratory tests and field observations. The DFNs explicitly generated the coal seam that was poorly or well cleated, indicating the different spacing between cleat apertures using the probability distribution functions for fracture density (or frequency) and size. The heterogeneity of the engineering properties (i.e., cohesion and tensile strength) are also considered by Monte Carlo simulations. Simulation results of laboratory tests using the 3DEC model and DFNs technique agreed well with the results of the laboratory tests. These calibrated results can be used as we seek to evaluate bump risk by modeling at field scale.
