In this paper, the old and the new commercially available reagent chemistries for the improved flotation of sulfide minerals will be summarized. The reagent classes discussed are those that meet three criteria: 1) they are being commercially used and/or large scale plant tested in North America in the last few years; 2) they are clearly different in chemical structure than commonly used commercial reagents of the last few decades and are not simply mixtures of existing reagents and/or simple changes in cation, alkyl group size, etc. and 3) the structural formulae are clearly specified in the public literature.

The use of various electrochemical techniques to study mechanisms of sulfide mineral- flotation reagent interactions is briefly reviewed in this paper. Prior to such studies it is desirable to thermodynamically determine solution conditions favorable for formation of hydrophobic species deemed to be responsible for flotation. The thermodynamic equilibrium involving both the stable and metastable species can be conveniently represented by an Eh-pH diagram. Thermodynamics can also be used to predict conditions where a mineral might not float if depressants are present. Under favorable conditions of flotation there is competition between reactions leading to formation of hydrophobic species with reactions that lead to formation of hydrophilic species. Due to the sluggish nature of the reactions involving sulfide minerals, a knowledge of the kinetic behavior of the system is necessary. Electrochemical methods of investigation are wed in laboratory studies to (1) control the state of oxidation, (2) determine the type and amount of electroactive species present at the mineral surface, and (3) study kinetics of electrode processes. By combining electrochemical techniques and wetting measurements the identification of hydrophobic species that might be present at the mineral surface could be achieved. Both contact angle measurements at mineral electrodes or flotation in a cell equipped with a particulate bed electrode can be used for the wetting measurements.

Automatic tripper control systems can be reliable and as such are suitable for use in the mining industry. Proper application of fundamental engineering principles provides the means for the reliability. Some of the principles are: (1) Be sure the system designer designs a system that does the job operations people want done; (2) Use sound logic design practices to avoid internal electrical problems; (3) The design must be maintenance oriented; and (4) Use good quality components. I would like to discuss a tripper control installation at Kennecott Copper Corporation, Chino Mines Division, in Hurley, New Mexico, and how these principles apply to this tripper control system. First, however, I will expand on the principles to clarify just what is meant. First, "Be sure the system designer designs a system that does the job operations people want done.? Operator acceptance is often the key to the success or failure of an automatic control system. One of the best ways I know of to get operator acceptance is to give him a system that he wants. I don't mean to imply that if bad practices or procedures exist that they should be incorporated in the control system. I do think that many designers feel they haven't done their job if the control system doesn't do things drastically different than the old manual method. Good engineering principles dictate that the job should be done right and if the manual method was right it can very likely be right for the automatic method.

In assessing the future markets for a mineral from a producing district, three key aspects must be considered: 1) the future growth in markets, 2) the competitiveness of the district in terms of production costs and reserve adequacy, and 3) the competition from alternative sources of supply. This paper will focus on the first issue by developing a method of predicting the demand for phosphate from the trends in the major markets for phosphate products, primarily the fertilizer and agricultural markets. The paper will show how broad changes in the final end use markets for phosphate products have evolved over time and how this has affected the needs for phosphate rock. These trends are then projected into the future to make an assessment of future phosphate requirements.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines develops technology to help ensure that the Nation has an adequate and dependable. supply of minerals at reasonable economic, human, and environmental cost. Our research programs seek improvements for almost every aspect of the mineral production cycle--from evaluating the availability of minerals, removing the ore from the earth, to enhancing the performance of mineral materials. The health and safety of the men and women who work in the Nation's mines and minerals processing plants and the environmental impact of mining and mineral processing are major Bureau research concerns. In recent years, the U.S. mineral industry has found it increasingly difficult to compete for a share of world markets. Many foreign producers benefit from lower production costs and higher grade deposits. Some foreign governments subsidize their mineral industries and impose fewer restrictions with respect to environmental controls and health and safety regulations. If the United States is to compete in world mineral markets, innovative technology must be found to lower the cost of recovering and processing minerals. Mining and mineral processing research by the Bureau identifies ways to help the country maintain a sound, competitive industry and a dependable mineral supply, so vital to economic growth and the national security. This work includes efforts to improve existing techniques and procedures; but more and more of the Bureau's resources are being focused on long-term, high-risk research directed at developing new approaches to mining and mineral activities--approaches like in situ mining. Bureau scientists are studying the mining applications of computer assisted mining and investigating a variety of "high tech" approaches to extractive metallurgy. Such cutting-edge research will be necessary if major advances in health and safety, environmental quality, strategic and critical minerals availability, and overall U.S. competitiveness are to be achieved. It is just such high-risk research that the industry cannot afford to conduct itself, but--in the long run--cannot afford to be without. It is this type of research that will help us arrive at a revolutionary breakthrough rather than small incremental changes in health and safety technology as well as recovery methods. Our mining and mineral processing research is also directed at reducing the Nation's dependence on imports of minerals that have key defense and industrial uses. Some of these strategic and critical minerals are particularly vulnerable to supply disruptions. We are working on technologies that would allow the United States to take advantage of domestic sources of these minerals--sources consisting primarily of deep or low-grade ores, ores with complex mineralogy we do not yet know how to process, and small deposits that are now uneconomical to mine and process. Other research activities focus on ways to reduce the Nation"s consumption of key minerals and increase the recycling of these minerals. The opportunities in this area include coal. The current middle eastern crisis reinforces the need for a stable energy supply--preferably a domestic supply. The extensive reserves of coal in this country are well documented. Perhaps what is not as well recognized is the impact that the price of coal can have on its competitive position both for domestic fuel selection considerations as well as for the ability of this country to compete in the coal export market. Today, the role to the United States is as a reliable, but high-cost exporter of high-quality coal. U.S. export coal competes with supplies from other major suppliers, including Australia, Canada, Poland. If U.S. mining costs were lowered by at least $8 per ton in the year 2000, then coal exports would surge by a projected 46 percent, and U.S steam coal displaces significant quantities of foreign coal imports in Europe. The solution of the dynamic population balance model (PBM) of a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone is problematic. The fact that the dynamic PBM model equation solution to the Inverse Problem for grinding systems is degenerate or underspecified is demonstrated. Two numerical solution approaches to the Inverse Problem are used. These are: 1) providing additional constraints on breakage selection functions or 2) performing the Arbiter-Bhrany (or other) normalization of the selection functions. Actual experimental anthracite batch grinding data is used to demonstrate the non-unique functionality of the batch dynamic mill selection and breakage functions for a real physical system. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations is used to solve the batch dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. Different solutions to the same PBM transport equations are provided. The mill, sump and hydrocyclone were modeled as a CSTR operating at various retention times. Batch dynamic PBM data was used to provide the mill kinetic and breakage selection function data. Two different solutions were obtained depending on the numerical solution approach. The severity of the non-uniqueness problem for dynamic grinding is demonstrated. Each solution approach to a dynamic PBM with transport, while giving the same prediction for a single batch grinding time, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. This fact makes dynamic nodal analysis and control problematic. The fact that the constraint solution approach gives a solution may suggest that normalization for closed networks is not necessary. Differences in solutions to the PBM cannot be excused away by inaccuracies in the data used to model the grinding phenomenon.

This paper is concerned with studying the dewatering behavior of three samples of iron ore products. The objective is to improve the industrial filtration performance by taking into account the laboratory results. Mineral samples came from the Iron Ore Quadrangle in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. These samples represent products from the industrial processing of hematitic ores. The samples have almost the same chemical and mineralogical compositions, but they have different size distributions and different specific surface areas. The filtration tests were performed using a modified Büchner funnel apparatus. The results indicate that size distribution and specific surface area have significant influences on dewatering behavior. For Sample 1, the addition of flocculant and/or surfactant was not essential to improving filtration performance. For Sample 3, the cake porosity and the cake thickness were influenced by the addition of the flocculant. On the other hand, the simultaneous addition of flocculant/surfactant decreased the cake formation time and reduced the cake moisture. For Samples 2 and 3, it was also observed that the industrial operation could be improved by taking into account these laboratory results. The objective is to develop a short-range mining plan which satisfies management and operating criteria and also "dovetails" with the long-range mining plan. In the past years, this objective was accomplished entirely by manual methods. Today, the computer is used to assist the engineer with this task. The results provided by these programs usually are incomplete and require further manual manipulation. The advantage of using the computer programs is that the program can be used to evaluate alternative plans on a first-cut basis minimizing the manual work. Subsequently, the most promising alternatives can be analyzed in more detail, commencing with the first-cut results. In this specific case history, one technique for using computer programs to assist with short-range mine planning will be discussed. Some of the basic operating and management criteria considered directly and indirectly are as follows: (1) operating criteria which include minimum and maximum shovel cut size, equipment performance, haulage roads, requirements for blending, and plant capacities; and (2) management criteria which consist of production requirements, cash flow requirements, return on investment, market demands, and availability of capital.

Electric drives hire done outstanding job in many-fields that are related to the mining industry. The equipment that is offered for electric-trucks was developed from the traction equipment which is used on the diesel electric locomotive. Rotating equipment available for use on electric trucks is identical in principle to that which is used on these locomotives. In as far as it is practical, similar controls are used. Another descendent of the diesel electric locomotive can be found in the oil well drilling industry, Here, locomotive traction motors and. electric controls have been modified to fit the particular requirements of the drilling industry, One 2400 H.P. diesel electric drilling rig drilled a 24,000 Ft. well in West Texas with an electrical maintenance cost in the order of 7¢ per hour This was a new rig and the costs are less than the average maintenance costs will be for the life of the equipment, Even soy since it took one (1) year to drill this well, this 7¢ per hour has real significance. Electric shovels use a similar type of electrical equipment; they too have shown real savings over the equipment they replaced. Since electric drives have done so well, in other fields, they warrant consideration for use in high horsepower, large capacity trucks.

Coalbed methane development is an important way to effectively realize a source of clean energy and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases. However, due to the low permeability of coal seams, the development of coalbed methane in China has encountered substantial barriers. Protective layer mining can efficiently minimize in situ stress and increase coal seam permeability, thus improving gas drainage and avoiding gas disasters. This study analyzed the characteristics of gas migration and the change in permeability during the in situ stress releasing process through experiments and numerical simulation to study the gas drainage effect of a coal mine in an unloaded coal seam under specific geological conditions. First, a stress–strain-seepage coupled test of coal was carried out, and the evolution features of coal permeability during stress loading and unloading processes were investigated. Second, experimental results were used to develop a mathematical model of coal seepage under mining unloading conditions. Finally, a numerical model was developed based on the real geological conditions of the Wulan coal mine to explore the characteristics of in situ stress release and permeability evolution, as well as the gas drainage process in an unloaded coal seam. By combining protective layer mining and gas drainage technology, the risk of gas outburst is significantly reduced.

The Upper Santa Cruz Groundwater Basin lies in the drainage area of the Santa Cruz River in Arizona, and extends upstream from the community of Rillito to the international boundary, see Figure 1. The principal water use area lies between and includes the cities of Tucson and Nogales. A subsurface geologic barrier near Rillito provides a reasonable dividing line between the groundwaters of the Upper and Lower Santa Cruz Basins. The Upper Basin contains the Tucson and Sahuarita-Continental critical ground- water areas. The Tucson Water Use Area encompasses the Tucson metropolitan area and extends from the northern boundary of the Basin south to the boundary between the Tucson and Sahuarita- Continental critical groundwater areas near San Xavier. The San Xavier Use Area is the San Xavier Indian Reservation. The north and south boundaries of the Continental Use Area coincide with the limits of the Sahuarita-Continental critical groundwater area. The first study of groundwater in this valley was initiated by Dr. G. E. P. Smith in 1905 and the results were published in 1910, followed by a series of bulletins of the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Arizona, covering the general field of groundwater development and utilization. Beginning in 1939, the Ground Water Branch of the United States Geologic Survey, in cooperation with the Arizona State Land Department and the Arizona Water Commission (AWC), have published a series of bulletins concerning groundwater occurrence and utilization in various areas of the state. In 1975 and 1977, the AWC published the "Arizona State Water Plan" (1), comprising a detailed inventory of water availability and use in the State of Arizona, and a study of alternative futures.

Merrill-Crowe is the primary process used for the concentration and purification of silver in a cyanide solution. The Langmuir Adsorption model for silver recovery in a cyanide solution was used for the study. The maximum adsorption capacity was 6.19 mmol/g for silver. This model properly adjusts the experimental results of the adsorption equilibrium with high correlation coefficients, which also favors the formation of a single layer of molecules adsorbed for the silver in the electrocoagulation- generated species. The thermodynamic parameters ΔG, ΔH, and ΔS were estimated, and it was found that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous. For the kinetic study, the Lagergren second-order equation was used to study the adsorption speed. To characterize the solids coming from the electrocoagulation, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were used; the results of this study suggest that silver is present in aluminite, hydroniumjarosite, and alunogen.

Capstone Copper’s Pinto Valley Mine faced challenges in recovering rock and ore on final walls because of geotechnical constraints that require restrictions on methods for loading blastholes adjacent to the pit boundaries to preserve wall stability. The operation had been using the same drill and blast designs for years. With changing geology, such as harder rock, as mining progressed, material was being left unmined in final walls because of poor breakage. The amount of unrecovered, unprocessed ore was estimated at approximately 380,000 tons a year generated from an average of 60 final wall blasts performed annually. The engineering team from Capstone and Dyno Nobel engaged to minimize the amount of material left on the final pit walls. This paper presents how we collected data, reviewed design standards, and found opportunities to improve ore recovery from pit final walls without increasing drilling and blasting costs. The results collected from implementing the new design on two benches showed the potential for extra revenue of approximately $3.6 million generated annually from reducing final wall unrecoverable underbreak by nearly 71% on the mine’s highwalls.

Native sulfur occurs with barite, celestite, and bioepigenetic calcite in the Culberson, Pokorny , and Leonard Minerals deposits, Delaware basin. The sulfur in these deposits, in "castile" masses, and in deposits of the Fort S tockton district have 6 34s values between +9 and -15. Native sulfur in the caves of the Guadalupe Mountains is somewhat lighter [(634s = -15 to -25)]. Barite in the Culberson, Leonard Minerals, and Comanche Creek sulfur deposits have 63% values of +35 to +73; celestite in the Culberson and Leonard Minerals occurrences have values of +38 and +36, respectively, and 87Sr/86Sr values of 0.707808 and 0.708138, respectively. Barite associated with sulfide, deposits, Guadalupe Mountains, have [634s] values of +41 to +62. Barite at Seven aeart Gap, Apache Mountains, is somewhat less enriched in heavy sulfur [(634s = +14 to +37)].

As indoor positioning provides particular challenges due to the unavailability of GPS signals, various systems such as ultrawideband (UWB), radio frequency identification (RFID), ultrasound, and wireless local area network (WLAN) have been proposed in recent years. Some of these technologies are currently being marketed and some are still being developed. UWB technology allows for higher precision while also reducing power consumption. Hence, the underground automation and localization systems can use this technology for more accuracy and robustness. This article discusses new robust UWB modules used for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations.

Most primary-molybdenite producers use a selective-flotation process in which molybdenite is floated from the ore while other sulfide and non-sulfide gangue minerals are depressed in the same step (Figure 1). The process was developed at the Climax mill. Reagents used in the rougher-flotation stage include vapor oil (collector), syntex (surfactant), pine oil (frother) and occasionally sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent (depressant). Rougher concentrate is upgraded by cleaner flotation to produce market-grade molybdenite concentrates. Reagents used in the cleaner flotation stage are Dowfroth 250, vapor oil, sodium cyanide and Nokes reagent. The development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax and the role of the reagents have been well described by Born, et al, (1976) and Malhotra, et al, (1976, 1977a, 1977b, 1977c, 1980). The hydrocarbon collector, vapor oil, accounts for approximately 50 percent of the total molybdenite-flotation reagent cost. Because vapor oil sources are limited, and the cost of vapor oil has increased significantly over the last decade, several studies have been done to evaluate alternate oil-based collectors and/or blends of collectors which would produce similar metallurgical results at a reduced cost, or increase the overall molybdenite recovery at the same cost (Smit and Bhasin, 1983; Hahn, 1969; Smith and Bhappu, 1971). The approach taken in the present study was to evaluate alternate non-oil based collectors and collector systems that are less expensive than vapor oil.

There are many reasons why the US mineral and primary metals industry is in its present state. Undoubtedly, a flood of imported goods in all sectors is playing a major role in the plight of our raw materials industry. Domestic industry is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of its international competitiveness. And we are beginning to wonder what is happening to our technological edge. A number of factors affect the international competitiveness. Engineers cannot do much about some of these factors - labor costs, tax policy, government relations, interest rates, dollar strength, and labor-management relations. Something can be done about technology, however. Some say technology is so easily transferable today. But I would like to believe that we have the ability to apply it better than others. Not too many years ago, "made in Japan" meant cheap and shoddy products. Today, Japan has completely changed its image. The US is beginning to feel the threat from Japan's low-cost, defect-free products with dependable delivery. With worldwide recession and the strength of the dollar, we were shocked at the sudden weakness that developed in America's industries, not only in the international market, but domestically as well. What went wrong and what can we do about it? Senior executives from 300 large American manufacturing companies were surveyed. These executives believe US companies must: • invest in more efficient plants and equipment (27%); • invest in more research and development (23%); • improve the quality of service to customers (23%); and • adopt more aggressive marketing tactics and strategies (14%). Are we not doing enough research? The US has nearly four times as many people engaged in research and spends four times as much for research as Japan (Fig. 1). There is little doubt about the excellence of the US performance in basic science as indicated by the number of Nobel prize recipients. Japan has produced only four winners since World War II. Look at technology trade of five countries (Fig. 2). Again, US performance has been remarkable. An interesting observation here, is that the United Kingdom, another country with economic woes, is also in the black, West Germany and Japan, both with trade surpluses, are net technology importers. It is apparent that the US' performance in the commercialization of new knowledge is much more in question. Japan had $50 billion of trade surpluses with the US last year, which led to some friction between Washington, DC and Tokyo. Comparing the technology trade of Japan and the US in more detail, Japan imports disproportionately large amounts of technology from the US and Europe. This data is rather old, 1978, but the general trend is not too different even today. It is generally believed that scientific research leads to innovative technology, then to economic payoff. But, after seeing the current technological challenge by Japan, we are forced to change this traditional view. Investment in research may eventually lead to economic payoff, but not directly. There is a middle ground between new knowledge and its commercialization. This is an area where the Japanese have been successful. Until the 1970s, many western companies licensed patents to Japan for quick profits. But, in recent years, these companies have become more discrete about the terms of technological transfer. As a result, a number of scientists and engineers are expressing deep concern over the future of technological developments in Japan. The Bureau of Mines (USBM), US Department of the Interior, has developed a method of dewatering clay slurries based on flocculation by high-molecular-weight polymers and water removal from the formed flocs using a trommel or hydrosieve. The exchange ion on the clays affects their dewaterability. Metal ions in solution and on the exchange sites of smectite clays are known to act as Lewis acids. Recent work has determined that these ions can be titrated with high-molecular-weight polymers. The relative acidity of the exchange ion and the basicity of the polymer determined by the new method give insight into the dewatering mechanism.
