Widespread high-calcium (HC) limestones in New Mexico and adjoining areas, are low in magnesium, but some units include shale interbeds that would be deleterious for usage in sulfur removal. In southwest New Mexico, southeast Arizona, and adjoining parts of Mexico, limestones in the thick Mississippian Escabrosa, Pennsylvanian-Permian Horquilla, and Cretaceous U-Bar units are HC as are strata in the Mississippian Lake Valley, Pennsylvanian formations, Permian Hueco, and parts of the Permian Capitan Limestone of south-central and southeast New Mexico and west Texas. In north-central and central New Mexico, many limestones in the Pennsylvanian Madera Formation are HC as are some of the Cenozoic travertines. In northwest New Mexico, where the present-day mine-mouth coal- fired power plants occur, there are no HC limestones, but to the north in southwest Colorado some beds of the Mississippian Leadville Limestone and Pennsylvanian Hermosa Formations are HC. HC limestones considered contain at least 95 percent calcium carbonate and less than 3 to 5 percent magnesium carbonate. Limits for other impurities are alumina, 1 percent; silica, 2 percent; sulfur 0.05 percent; phosphorous, 0.02 percent; and iron oxide, about 1 percent. Chemical and physical requirements differ slightly depending upon the ultimate use.

As the environmental movement gained force during the past few years, it was inevitable that attention would be focused on surface mining, and we have seen this method of extracting minerals from the ground come under heavy attack by conservation groups, the press and television, legislators at all levels of government,, and the public at large. It is difficult, and in some situations, perhaps impossible, to measure either the need for, or the results of, land reclamation in absolute terms. Therefore, much of the criticism of surface mining has been based upon subjective analysis rather than hard data, with the result that discussion of the subject often includes a fair amount of emotional response. To be fair, this reaction is not limited to just our critics; even we hard headed engineers sometimes respond in the same way, an observation with which you may agree when I finish this talk. This leads to the thought that whether you are for it, or against it, land reclamation in many respects is a state of mind. That is, our reaction to it can vary considerably, depending on how far we have thought it through. And think it through we must, because the pressures being brought to bear need to be met with positive actions if the problem is to be brought under control, and in the next few minutes I would like to discuss from a management point of view some ideas which might aid in this thinking process. It would be a mistake, I believe, to think that the current energy crisis will suddenly bring the environmental movement to a stop, and therefore, we can relax and go back to running our busi¬ness the way we used to. The modern era of mineral exploration in Panama began in the late 1960's, resulting in porphyry copper discoveries at Petaquilla, Rio Pito, and Cerro Colorado. In contrast, Panama's early mining history (1503 to the early 1700's) was associated with gold. A single mine, Cana, in Darien Province, produced more than one Million ounces of gold in the colonial period. Except for episodic exploration activity by British and French interests, Panama's gold potential since the 1700's has been largely ignored.

The results of an extensive one- year test period of a nonelectric explosives detonating system led to the mine-wide adoption of this system at the Henderson Mine in early 1978. Since that time, extensive experience with nonelectric initiation has verified the earlier results which include the following benefits: 1. Increased blasting safety 2. Improved productivity 3. Cost effectiveness 4. High reliability At the present time, while electric blasting caps still experience a limited use restricted to trunkline initiation, all heading rounds as well as the longhole bell, undercut, boundary cutoff and raise blasting are detonated non-electrically. The primary blasting agent used is AN/FO, and primers are typically one of the following products (depending on application): PETN, semi-gelatin dynamites or a nonnitroglycerin water-gel slurry.

Precious metal mineralization at Mt. Hamilton, NV is associated with a polymetallic, garnet-pyroxene skarn system developed in middle to upper Cambrian calcareous shale, limestone, and dolomite. The skarn is developed around the Cretaceous Seligman and Monte Cristo calc-alkaline stocks. Gold is associated with intense retrograde alteration. Later epithermal quartz veins contain gold, silver, base-metal sulfides, and sulfosalts cross-cut skarn alteration. Westmont Mining Inc. is currently developing two mineralized zones containing a geologic resource of about 7 Mt (7.7 million st) that averages 1.7 g/t (0.05 oz per st) gold and 17.2 g/t (0.5 oz per st) silver. The project will have an estimated mine life of seven years, with a planned annual production rate of I t (35,000 oz) of gold and 9.3 t (300,000 oz) of silver.

With no doubt, Peruvian mining potential is great as well as the energetic one. Unfortunately, this potential is threatened by social unrest. Several methods and strategies from different standpoints have been rehearsed with respect to unrest in Peru, however, the problem goes on without getting the right conflict interpretation and most of all, effective solutions are not achieved. The mining unrest dates from ancient times and has not always had the same stages nor the same demands. In the 20´s and 30´s, conflicts focused on workers’ rights and demands. In the 70´s, conflict focused on mines nationalization that were under foreign control. In the 80´s, conflicts took place because of requesting better wages, better working conditions, better mining profits distribution and more investment in communities that surround mining projects. It is very important to highlight those transversal demands such as land purchase, agricultural property, impacts and water reduction as well as pollution, impact on water systems and disappearance of springs have always been present over the historical period.

In the underground type of mining operation, the finer portion of the waste material commonly is pumped as a hydraulic slurry to a tailings disposal pond. (1)* The tailings slurry is deposited via a pipe manifold system located around the perimeter of the pond. This method of deposition produces zoning because the coarser material tends to settle out immediately while the finer particles tend to remain in suspension and are deposited progressively nearer the center of the pond. The manifold system must be raised periodically as the pond fills with the tailings material. Over a period of time, this procedure will produce a zoned embankment known as a tailings dam. A typical pond and dam are shown in Figure 1. In plan view, the dimensions of tailings dams can be on the order of miles, with the height of the dam reaching 100 to 200 feet. Due to such factors as inadequate compaction, inherently low strength of the tailings material, and the possibility of high phreatic surface, many dams at some point become unstable, i.e., the factor of safety against a slope failure approaches 1.0. Remedial measures are required to improve the safety factor in order to prevent massive failure of the dam. In most cases, stability can be improved by effectively flattening the slope of the dam as shown in Figure 2, but this is not possible in every case. Occasionally, a tailings dam is constructed adjacent to a natural or legal boundary so that it is not possible to construct a conventional berm or to reduce the slope angle with earth moving equipment. Even a terracing process would require removal of the material and this may not be practical. In such a situation, an alternate scheme to improve stability must be found.

The concepts of sea floor spreading and plate tectonics provide more logical explanations of some geologic processes than were possible a few years ago. I plan to premise my discussion of the regional features of Philippine porphyry copper deposits on this tectonic basis, recognizing that parts of the picture can be explained in other ways, but in the belief that this is the best explanation of the whole. The sequence of events which results in the formation of Porphyry deposits (Figure 1) can be summarized as the result of collision of crustal plates, subduction of the oceanic plate, emplacement of a serpentine ultrabasic diapir, formation of a dioritic magma at depths of 300 to 500 km, rise of the magma to a sub crustal or intra-crustal chamber, eruption of andesitic volcanoes, emplacement of diorite or differentiation of the magma into more acidic products, multiple intrusion of hypabyssal rocks and hydro-

The principal concepts of computer control and automation have been successfully applied in industries world-wide, The enthusiasm generated by the proponents of computer control, and the apparent mystery enveloping the techniques of computer control, have caused attention to be focused on this infant industry from all quarters. Consequently, the motivation to "computerize" may be the hope that computers will solve all economic problems. The truth remains that not only have there been monumental successes, but there have been some colossal failures. This paper will attempt to outline a generalized guide to computer control and present methods for avoiding some of the major pitfalls. Since the investment required for computer control systems has been drastically reduced in the past year, small operations will likely find that computerized process control is attractive in areas where it has never been considered before, The discussion presented here is intentionally non-technical and directed towards those who may soon find they have a possible application for a control computer. The primary purpose of computer control is to reduce expenditure and increase profits by improving the quality of product, increasing the efficiency of operation, reducing the materials and man hours required or a combination of these. Success or failure to reach the desired goal depends, to a large degree, on a well-planned approach. This includes recognizing a possible computer application, properly defining the job which is to be accomplished, evaluating computer systems, selecting a capable manufacturer, and following through with sound systems engineering and programming.

The Upper Scioto West Interceptor Sewer (USWIS), Parts 1 and 2, consists of approximately 7,128 meters (23,385 ft) of 328 cm (129 in.) diameter tunnel. The project ex-tends from the City of Dublin to Griggs Dam in the City of Columbus. The majority of the tunnel was designed for excavation in rock by TBM. The remaining portions span pre-glaciation formed valleys in-filled with glacially-derived sediments. Tunnel construction in one of the glacial till filled sections includes excavation by drilling and controlled blasting. The other section will be constructed by ground consolidation followed by excavation by TBM. This paper describes the methods employed to mine the glacial till filled valleys.

Digital photography combined with three dimensional models of topography, mining operations and restoration plans can lead to extremely realistic images and animations of the current and future states of a mine or quarry. The amount of work and the time required for the successful modeling of a mine and its restoration plan are surprisingly low nowadays. All this means that the visual impact of mining and quarrying operations can be easily assessed using common computer hardware and some dedicated software packages. LAVA Mining and Quarrying SA is a company committed to strive continuously for the highest possible environment protection at the company?s quarries. The pozzolanic rock quarry located at Xylokeratia is one of the company?s quarries on the island of Milos and the subject of the study presented in this paper. A thorough restoration plan of the Xylokeratia quarry is being completed by the company. For its purposes, a complete visual impact assessment study was performed at the Department of Geotechnology and Environmental Engineering of the Technological Education Institute of Western Macedonia. The procedures used in this study and the produced visual results are presented in this paper.

The role of ZnSO4 in activation of sphalerite (ZnS) and deactivation of lead-activated sphalerite has been investigated. Adsorption of metallic ions at the solid-solution interface, electrokinetic results for sphalerite under different chemical conditions, and thermodynamic calculations were used to elucidate the mechanisms involved. It is shown that flotation response of sphalerite in absence of activators is rather weak and that adsorption of ethyl xanthate on the mineral mainly electrostatic in nature. Zinc sulfate is found to activate the mineral but only in a narrow acidic pH range. This is attributed to the increase of zeta potential as well as the possible increase in amount of negatively charged bulk precipitated zinc xanthate. Lead ions activate sphalerite in a wide pH range and the lead activated mineral assumes a flotation behavior similar to that of galena (PbS). However, addition of ZnSO4 depresses the lead-activated sphalerite by replacing lead ions at the mineral/solution interface.

With the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canada, the United States and Mexico entered into an international experiment in economics amid a cloud of controversy that still lingers. Central to the controversy are the disparities in wages that exist among workers in the signing countries. Wage surveys completed by Western Mine Engineering show the degree of disparity that exists among the mining industries of those three countries. Labor costs constitute 30% to 50% of operating costs. So these wage differences are a matter of interest to the mining industry. It is unclear how much of a factor they are in determining where companies search for and develop new mines. That depends on where minable deposits are expected to be found. However, a deposit that may not be minable in the United States or Canada may be minable in Mexico because of lower labor costs. Some adjustments are anticipated for the Mexican mining industry if and when its wages begin to approach comparability with US and Canadian wages. Table 1 combines the results of four recent surveys. It lists benchmark wages for mining job titles common to all the countries. About 220 mines are covered by the combined surveys. Canadian miners' wages, converted to US dollars, are typically 75% to 95% of US wages, while Mexican miners' wages are less than 10% of those in the United States. Table 1 also shows that wage disparities are not confined to international borders. In fact, the difference in average wages between the US coal industry and the US metal and industrial mineral industries is greater than between the Canadian and the US mining industries overall. Table 2 shows that managerial, technical and administrative salaries show similar, but less pronounced differences among the three countries. Salaried personnel at Canadian mines earn 80% to 90% as much as their US counterparts, while those in Mexico earn 20% to 30% as much. Here again, average US coal salaries exceed average salaries for the US metal and industrial mineral industries.

Carbon-in-leach (CIL) is conventionally used in gold processing operations when preg robbing components are present in the ore. The CIL process is becoming attractive even in other situations when preg robbing is not a factor. This article discusses the situations in which the CIL circuit can be applied. The results of leach-carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and CIL circuits at Newmont Gold's Mill No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 are presented for comparison: Mill No. 4 was initially designed for a throughput of 4.1 kt/d (4500 stpd). It is presently operating at an average throughput of 6.6 kt/d (7300 stpd) without significant changes to the original design. The design considerations of the Mill No. 4 CIL circuit are discussed. The design of any processing facility represents a series of decisions. The final design options should ultimately be resolved based on economic as well as technical considerations. Every design decision represents some sort of compromise. From the designer's view point, these decisions are made with the conviction that the final product represents the most prudent long-term expenditure. The design throughput rate is a decision reflecting a maximum return for the capital and operating costs that the plant will incur over the life of the mineral resource. The result is a plant that is not operator proof or maintenance free because it would be too costly to build. Numerous worthwhile benefits accrue to the industrial organization that is supported by a maintenance organization performing at a world class level. That organization will be favored with consistently reliable production equipment. It will be assured of meeting production goals. Its product will exceed marketplace standards. Its customers will see them as a quality organization. Its employees will enjoy job satisfaction and the plant will realize continuing profitability. Every industrial plant aspires to achieve ?world class? status knowing it can compete favorably with the best, most profitable organizations in the world. The trick is to achieve the attributes that qualify your organization for world class status. But there are no world class maintenance organizations. Rather, there are world class industrial organizations that include a world class maintenance organization. Maintenance, by itself, is a service provider, dependent on the support and cooperation of other departments. When that service is exceptional, it is made that way because maintenance is operating in a plant environment that requires it to be exceptional. Managers have created an environment in which maintenance can be exceptional. The plant, mine or facility manager must acknowledge from the start that maintenance is not a stand-alone effort of a plant maintenance department. It will require the joint efforts of all plant departments. Quality material support and full cooperation from operations, for example, are among the essential requisites for effective maintenance and achievement of world class maintenance status. When attributes such as these are reinforced by dedicated plant managers, profitability soon follows.

One of the most dramatic innovations in the materials handling industry has been the development of stacker cranes and automated material handling systems. The stacker crane with its many capabilities and the development of reliable industrial automation controls have combined to produce dramatic achievements in an area once characterized by inefficiency lack of management attention, and capital investment. In many areas of application however, stacker cranes and high rise storage systems have been designed and installed with insufficient thought given to their integration into the overall operations of the plant or distribution facility. This paper will look at some new and interesting breakthroughs in the integration of stacker cranes and high rise storage systems into the total manufacturing plant system. In this paper we will refer to both bridge type stacker cranes and aisle stackers. The bridge type stacker crane was developed first and was initially developed with forks or other handling devices hoisted up and down a rigid or telescopic mast. This mast system was suspended from a trolley mounted on an overhead crane bridge. Today, the primary application of the bridge type stacker is in warehousing systems for handling basic metal products such as coils, bars, sheets and plates. There is no question that the bridge type stacker has achieved notable results in storage and handling of these commodities. However, a new area for stacker crane application has been developing which in many cases over-shadows the accomplishments in the storage area. This is the application of the bridge stacker as an integral part of the manufacturing processes, or in other terms the production applications of stacker cranes. The stacker crane has a number of attributes which makes these applications very important. First, the crane bridge provides the stable platform for the mounting of machinery which can accommodate the hoisting and lateral movement of large capacity loads. Today stacker cranes are being built with capacities of up to 30 - 40 tons. The bridge cranes can easily accomplish accommodation Of these large tonnages. Secondly, the mast system provides a stable platform for the mounting of a wide variety of manipulating devices which can be used for the placement of material into manufacturing processes, the extraction of this material from these processes, and movement to other points in the process area. These attributes combined with excellent operator control and safety have led to development of the stacker crane as a production tool.

Languages such as SIMSCRIPT and GASP have reduced the programming skills required to build simulation models, but not to a level where these can be used by a busy engineer or manager unless he has extensive programming experience. In an attempt to make simulation a more readily available tool, Sanford (1969) structured a generalized materials handling model (UGMHS)* for underground coal mining. The majority of materials handling systems consist of a set of moves and a set of pieces of equipment required to execute the moves. UGMHS gives a technique for describing and classifying the elements in these sets and then a technique for simulating the interactions of these elements as the materials handling system operates. To apply the model, the user simply furnishes data parameters and a fixed set of orders to the computer for his own problem. This new philosophy of dynamic simulation as applied by UGMHS was demonstrated in the paper by Sanford and Manula (1973). A dynamic model of underground coal mining was presented for the purposes of systems design and selection of equipment for a completely new operation and the analysis of existing ones for possible alterations, additions, and general improvements. The main differences between this application and its predecessors is the ability to transport material from multiple mine faces to multiple mine destinations and the ready adaptability to a wide variety of mine layouts. The second difference that characterizes the model is the deterministic simulation of equipment moves according to their mechanical capabilities and the physical profile of the mining scheme. Here, the computer generates performance data in the absence of time studies to compare equipment rather than operator performance.

The early beginnings of mining geophysics in Sweden can be traced back to the reign of queen Kristina in the 17th century. The mine compass, consisting of a freely suspended magnetic needle in a casing, was in use certainly by 1640 and probably earlier for locating iron ore deposits. Whether the mine compass was a Swedish invention or not is an unsettled question since the possibility cannot be overlooked that the celebrated Nürnberg compass-makers of the 16th century may have constructed it for the first time(1). Be that as it may, the mine compass was very extensively employed in Sweden for more than two centuries and met with spectacular success in locating magnetic deposits under shallow overburden. Occasionally the diligent prospector would even be rewarded with a pyrrhotitebearing sulphide deposit, as witness many old sulphide-ore pits and some mines still in operation from the 17th and the 18th centuries. The mine compass measured only the orientation of the Earth's magnetic field and not its strength. Although it was improved in construction and sensitivity over the ages, no great strides were made in magnetic prospecting after the initial discovery of the use of the compass until Gauss, omnipresent in 19th century physics and mathematics, showed with the assistance of Weber how the strength of a magnetic field could be determined.

The electrochemical behavior of pyrite in borate/sulfate solutions was investigated using cyclic voltammetry. Three anodic peaks at approximately -0.8 V, -0.1 V and +0.5 V (SCE) were detected along with their corresponding reduction peaks. The first two peaks correspond to the oxidation of surface products. The third peak corresponds to the direct oxidation of pyrite with reaction products FeO oxides. sulfate ion and partially oxidized sulfur intermediates present as a surface film of polysulfides and So. The Few oxides and sulfur intermediates were reduced to ferrous hydroxide and HS during the negative-going scan. The HS interacted preferentially with Fe(OH), on the surface to form FeS. Excess fenous hydroxide continued to reduce to metallic iron. During the return positive-going scan, metallic iron was oxidized to ferrous hydroxide and FeS was oxidized to pyrite. These reactions are characterized by a unique double peak observed in the region -0.8 to -0.65 V. The growth kinetics of the surface sulfur film formed during anodic oxidation were studied using chronoarnperomeay. Potentiostatic measurements were well correlated by a paralinear rate equation, suggesting the formation of an intermediate passive film, associated with the simultaneous dissolution of the outer layer of the film. The reaction rates were affected by applied potential, solution pH and temperature, but were independent of electrode rotation speed. A reaction kinetics model which fitted well with experimental results, was developed.
