In order to improve the thermal environment in deep coal mines, two principles can be applied: firstly, the reduction of heat flow into the air stream, and secondly, cooling of the air current. First of all one should try to minimize the heat-flow rate into the air stream underground by the mining method itself. German coal mines prefer the caving system of advance longwall mining simultaneously on several levels with ascensional ventilation. The effects of descensional ventilation and different face ventilation layouts on the thermal environment are discussed, besides the effects of pneumatic and hydraulic stowing. Application of all mentioned possibilities together instead of today's common mining method would reduce the Basis Effective Temperature considerably. In the future, hydraulic haulage of the raw coal underground substituting belt conveying may be a mean to improve the thermal environment further on. If the working depth of a coal mine exceeds about 1 000 m, cooling of the air stream under-ground will be necessary in addition to the above- mentioned measures. Generally, in German coal mines different types of indirect-contact air coolers located nearby the face are used. Besides such so-called cooling coils, large-capacity spray coolers are used because they work more efficiently if a great cooling duty is demanded. Common designs of both air cooler types and their possible utilizations are demonstrated. Deep coal mines in the Federal Republic of Germany need up to 30 MW of total cooling capacity. Mostly, the needed chilled water is cooled by large-capacity refrigeration plants placed on surface, underground or in combination of the above locations nearby the shaft. Due to the increasing underground cooling demand, the distribution of the chilled water and the control of the air coolers become more important. The conception of a control system is discussed, which is based on the control of the single air coolers. All air coolers of a mine are controlled so as to optimize the supply water-flow rate with regard to the demanded cooling duty of the coolers. On the next upper level of the control system the whole chilled water network and finally the refrigeration plant is regulated. Present research work deals with the use of ice for cooling mines. There are some unsolved problems in this new cooling concept. Some aspects of making, transporting and storing ice are described. The use of ice may probably reduce the cooling costs of German collieries, which are at present approximately 4 DM per ton of saleable coal.

In 1962 a computerized data processing system was first installed and programmed for the grading of direct-shipping iron ore from the Sept-Iles terminal of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Over the years several changes and improvements have been incorporated into this system. It is the purpose of this paper to describe its present operation and features. Sept-Iles is located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, 500 miles north east of Montreal. The direct-shipping ore is received by railroad from Schefferville, 320 miles to the north in the Knob Lake Iron Range of New Quebec and Labrador. The shipping season extends from mid-March to December. The maximum tonnage handled in this period being 13,045,000 long tons in 1959. Crude ore receipts for 1974 amounted to 6,568,000 tons of direct-shipping and 4,700,000 tons of plant feed material from Schefferville. This was augmented by 4,447,000 tons of concentrate and 7,572,000 tons of pellets from Labrador City 200 miles north of Sept-Iles. The direct-shipping ore has come from as many as ten mines, and grade variations, even-within the same mines, have been sufficient to require blending for uniform, acceptable cargos. Shipments of low phosphorous, non bessemer and manganiforous iron ore are made, to Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan with grade variations to meet customers requirements.

This article describes and analyzes the history of research into the origins of the uranium-vanadium(-radium) deposits of the Paradox Basin. For several decades after their discovery in 1881, research was desultory and almost entirely descriptive, fluctuating with demand for vanadium and radium. Systematic geologic descriptions, accumulated between 1910 and 1950, supported rapid progress during a government-backed surge of research in the 1950s, when uranium was the chief commodity of interest. Most of the major theoretical innovations date from this decade, including the use of concepts from solution chemistry to identify the conditions and constrain the processes of deposit formation and alteration. Research from this time was highly influential in geology at large, providing the model for sandstone-hosted uranium deposits worldwide and numerous new minerals and mineral structures. After about 1960, mine production remained high but research dwindled, and most new advances were to the details of the hydrothermal model of ore formation rather than its core concepts. By the end of the 1960s, the deposits were understood to have formed at the mixing interface of an oxidized, metal-bearing water with a reducing fluid of debated origin. Research was desultory over the ensuing decades; the source of the metals and the nature of the chemicals constituting the trap were not clearly established. They remain questions today, as do factors like the relationship between ore mineralization and the geologic history of the basin. (More in the full paper.)

Two samples of iron enriched basalt (IEB) containing simulated nuclear fuel and having two distinct microstructures were prepared and tested for uranium recovery. The IEBs are refractory towards leaching by ground water. However, the uranium content (15.8%) is high enough that if aggressive leaching techniques are used for uranium recovery, these materials could be considered as man-made uranium ores. The IEBs discussed in this report were prepared to simulate Three Mile Island-2 core debris. The crushed IEBs were treated using three different methods simulating potential industrial scale processes. In one method the IEBs were fused with sodium hydroxide then the cooled mass leached first with water then with dilute sulfuric acid; about 52% of the uranium was recovered in this case. In the second method the IEBs were treated with a sulfuric acid/hydrogen peroxide lixiviant and about 13% of the uranium was recovered. In the third technique the IEBs were leached with a sodium carbonate/sodium bicarbonate/hydrogen peroxide solution. Only about 0.1% of the uranium was recovered. The results of these screening tests suggest that the IEBs can be successfully treated for recovery of the contained uranium. Other studies would be required to determine if other values, such as zirconium or silver, could be recovered from the IEBs.

In order to put an end to the uneven environmental standards and enforcement established by various coal mining States in the United States, the Congress passed and the President signed the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (Public Law 95-87 or the Act) on August 3, 1977. Within one year after passage, the Secretary of the Interior was directed to promulgate permanent program regulations implementing Title V provisions of the Act. These regulations were to form the basis for State regulatory programs under the Act and to allow States to assume primary regulatory responsibility. In order to implement the underground mining provision of the Act, the Secretary is directed in section 516(a) of the Act to promulgate rules, but ones which take into consideration the distinct differences between surface coal mining and underground coal mining. The regulations developed by the Secretary and promulgated on March 13, 1979, with respect to subsidence control, included (1) a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process, (2) substantive provisions establishing performance standards for subsidence control, and (3) provisions providing for the prohibition of mining under perennial streams, impoundments larger than 20 acre feet, and certain public facilities and urban areas.

This report describes a smoke particle detector which utilizes a novel three electrode configuration and 5.0 [] source of Americium 241. The detector operates on the principle of diffusional charging by a region of unipolar molecular ions. The detector is sensitive to particle concentrations in the range of 10 to 5 20 ug/m3. The detector is intended for use primarily as an early warning fire detector but has the potential for other applications of particulate monitoring. In particular, this report adresses the potential use of the detector for monitoring diesel particulate matter (DPM). To assess the viability of this application, particle size data obtained from in-mine sampling of both DPM and dust were used to derive detector sensitivity functions for DPM and dust as a function of their mass concentrations only. These sensitivity functions are dependent upon the average diameters and size distributions of the DPM and dust. Using the derived sensitivity function for DPM, experiments were conducted in a ventilated tunnel where the true DPM mass concentrations, measured using a Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) were compared to the mass concentrations calculated using the detector sensitivity function. The agreement between the two measurements was good, indicating that with additional experiments, coupled with in-mine evaluation of the detector, refinement of the device for use as a continuous monitor for DPM appears feasible.

The current U.S. Bureau of Mines research program is addressing the recovery of flake graphite from kish, a steelmaking waste product, and the use of zeolites from abundant domestic natural deposits for efficiently cleaning up mining industry wastewater. The United States is almost totally dependent on imports for its graphite needs, but this may change depending upon the results from a pilot plant being constructed by industry using Bureau technology. Standard mineral processing techniques were applied by the Bureau to recover high-quality flake graphite from kish. It was considered innovative enough to receive an R&D 100 Award in 1992, and its commercialization has the potential to supply the total U.S. demands for graphite many times over. Zeolites have ion exchange properties similar to ion exchange resins, but are less expensive and available in large quantities. Samples of naturally occurring zeolites were tested for their efficiency in removing metal ions from synthetic and industrial waste solutions. The tests focused on defining their selecting, loading, eluting, and regenerating characteristics, and on developing a method for recovering the metal ions as added value products. The results showed that the removal of metal ions with zeolites from acid rock drainage (ARD) solutions is technically feasible and that this technique has the potential for being used in an integrated chemical treatment systems approach either as a primary or secondary cleaning step.

Precious metal mineralization at Mt. Hamilton" Nevada is associated with a poly-metallic, garnet-pyroxene skarn system developed in middle to upper Cambrian calcareous shales, limestones and dolomites. The skarn is developed around the Cretaceous Seligman and Monte cristo calc-alkaline stocks. Gold is associated with intense retrograde alteration. Later epithermal quartz veins containing gold, silver, base-metal sulfides, and sulfosalts cross-cut skarn alteration. Westmont Mining Inc. is currently developing two mineralized zones containing a geologic resource of approximately 7.7 M.T., which averages 0.05 OPT gold and 0.5 OPT silver. The project will have an estimated mine life of seven years, with a planned annual production rate of 35,000 ounces of gold and 300,000 ounces of silver.

The establishment of a retreat system of longwall mining in this submarine coal field has been under study for many years and, although in special cases there have been limited local applications of this method of mining, there has been no attempt until quite recently to establish a uniform system of longwall retreating' in this area (see Figure 1) Where retreat walls were established, it was strictly as a result of physical, rather than economic conditions. In some of the operations- of the Corporation, where the coal was liable to spontaneous combustion- or the area subject to bumps as in No. 2 Mine of the Cumberland Railway and Coal Company in Springhills the recovery of the coal on a retreat system was more or less a necessity.

Hydrometallurgy has a well-known and established role in the production of manganese metal (1) and manganese compounds, including battery grade manganese dioxide (2). Also, several leaching processes have been developed and applied at various times for the recovery of manganese from low grade ores (3). Recently, interest in the hydrometallurgy of manganese has been stimulated by the problems presented in the processing of sea nodules (4). Fumes and dusts from the ferro-manganese furnaces also offer a potential field for the application of manganese leaching techniques (5). In treating low grade manganese ores a major requirement of the leaching process is that it should dissolve manganese from a mixture of manganese and iron oxides. The most selective reagent for this purpose is ammonium carbamate applied after preliminary pyrometallurgical reduction of the ore (6). Since soluble carbamate complexes of the postulated type (7) are formed by both manganous and ferrous, but by neither manganic nor ferric, ions, selectivety of manganese leaching is achieved by control of the reduction operation to yield, essentially MnO and Fe304? A potential improvement to this two step process would be to simultaneously reduce and selectively leach the manganese in one hydrometallurgical operation. This possibility has been experimentally studied and the results are described below. Part 2 of this article continues the discussion of a 10-year, multimillion dollar research and plant testing program on slurry rheology and grinding circuits. The first part of the article (ME, Dec. 1982) presented the basic concepts identified by the research and some laboratory test results. This section Illustrates typical Industrial scale test results and Identifies some industrial operating implications of controlling rheology by different methods. At least four controllable factors decide the rheological character of a slurry-slurry density or percent solids, particle size distribution, chemical environment, and slurry temperature. The second factor has two interrelated facets: the shape of the particle size distribution which controls packing behavior of the solids, and the fineness of the distribution. Finer particles increase interparticle forces and viscosity. As indicated in Part 1, during a given grinding test it is possible for all four factors to change. However, regardless of the particular settings of the four factors in a given test, if the resulting rheological character is either dilatant, pseudoplastic, or pseudoplastic with yield, the associated breakage rate is correlated with the current rheological character. It is obvious, for example, in batch grinding tests run at constant percent solids, that the second and third factors, where appropriate, are changing during grinding because size distributions are changing and the production of fresh surface area takes up unadsorbed chemical. Thus the corresponding rheological character change in batch tests with increasing grind time would be dilatant to pseudoplastic to pseudoplastic with yield. The degree to which this transformation occurs depends on the changing setting of the four factors over grinding time. In continuous grinding tests, one might logically expect that dramatic changes in any one of the four factors will be less likely to occur. It will be shown that continuous mill operations offer some unique opportunities to take advantage of possible rheological transformation by more direct operational control of the settings for the four factors. One extra observation noted in the rheological studies was the variability in the location and extent of region B (pseudoplastic behavior) for the various coals and ores tested. The location of region B was usually in the region of 45-55% solids by volume and was of the extent of 0-8%, or 2-11% with chemical addition. The corresponding increase in net production ranged from 0-10% in region B and 0-21% in region B&apos;. When region B is small or zero (no pseudoplastic character is exhibited) no increase in production will be observed and the use of chemicals is often marginal. There are several reasons for some materials exhibiting this quick transformation from dilatancy to high yield values often at surprisingly low percent solids by volume such as 30%. One condition identified was for materials containing high levels of viscosity-producing elements such as- carbonates or clays. A second condition documented was for materials that exhibited unusually fine primary fragment distributions (fine B1,; curves). This corresponds to materials having small y values of < 0.5. Such a slurry developed a yield value quickly during grinding because of the rapid buildup of fines. A related problem can be presented by materials exhibiting excessively coarse primary fragment distributions, y values > 0.9. Breakage of this type of material produces size distributions that give poor packing efficiencies even at long grind times, thus hindering the normal rheological transformation presented earlier. A final condition that can cause the occurrance of region B to be small or zero is when the media void volume filling of slurry is < 100%. Figures 5a and 5b use previously published data of this study to demonstrate the influence of solids loading and weight percent solids on the net production of taconite ore in a laboratory batch ball mill. In particular, Fig. 5a illustrates several trends not generally recognized until this study. They include these two: • Increased slurry density allows for increased solids loading before passing through the maximum in the net production curve where the fall-off is due to non first order breakage. • The use of rheology control chemicals such as GA-4272 allows this trend to be extended to higher slurry loadings with an increase in net production over any previous condition by keeping grinding first order. Figure 5b shows the same data as Fig. 5a plotted for constant weight loadings. These various figures of net production versus percent solids show the location and extent of the regions A, B, and C presented in Part 1 as a function of solids loading. It is obvious that the rheological transformation pattern described earlier does not hold true for slurry loadings corresponding to less than the void volume of the media, which is also a region of

INTRODUCTION Thermally induced fracture of rock is one of the oldest rock breakage techniques known to man. Primitive underground miners used fires to heat and crack rocks as early as the third century B.C. (Ref. 1). History aside, however, present-day tunneling and mining interests are reconsidering the use of modern heating units for rock fracture for some very good reasons. One of the most important advantages of many heating techniques is the lack of direct contact between the heating device and the rock. This means a lower wear rate relative to mechanical cutters, and no large reactant force to be supplied by the tunneling machine. In addition to avoiding physical contact, some heating systems (e.g., electron-beam guns and lasers) can deliver energy to a rock face much more intensely than can be conveniently handled mechanically. Thus, heating power densities of the order of lob to 107 watts/in.2 and greater can be achieved with high-power lasers. These high power levels allow much higher instantaneous penetration rates than can be achieved by mechanical cutting. Another advantage that accrues to some thermal techniques, such as, for example, surface spalling, is that the thermal fracture process works particularly well in certain rock types (e.g., granite) that are particularly hard to cut mechanically. The discovery of the gold deposits of the Jerritt Canyon district and the construction of the E. R. Bell Mine is one of the significant mining developments in the United States during the past ten years. This mine will exploit one of the larger deposits of disseminated gold presently known, with proven, recoverable reserves in excess of 67.6 million grams of gold. Interest generated by the success of this project has contributed greatly to the tremendous resurgence in exploration for disseminated gold deposits in Nevada and throughout the west. The Jerritt Canyon project, including the Bell Mine, is a 70/30 joint venture between Freeport Gold Company and FMC Gold Incorporated, both of which are wholly owned affiliates of the respective parent companies, Freeport-McMoRan, Inc. and FMC Incorporated. Under the terms of the joint venture agreement, Freeport Exploration Company, another Freeport-McMoRan affiliate, manages the exploration and pre-mine development. Drilling, design, construction and management of the Bell Mine are provided by Freeport Gold Company.

In order to improve handling of subsidence damages the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund supported the development of novel cost-effective methods of repair. The research in developing the repairs was directed towards the most common and costly damages that had been observed. As a result repair techniques were designed for structurally cracked foundations in the tension zone; structurally cracked foundations in the compression zone; and damaged or undamaged tilted foundations. When appropriate, the postulated methods would result in: 1. significant cost savings (over conventional procedures); 2. a structural capacity greater than when the foundation was untracked; and 3. an aesthetic appeal. All the postulated repair methodologies were laboratory and/or field tested. The paper will summarize the essentials of each technique developed and the test results.

In order to keep good air condition in any specific branch such as coal face and/or heading in an underground coal mine, effective factors of all the branches with respect to the specified branch have been investigated, using computer simulation. Main results of the paper are as follows; 1) A branch in a network is classified to one of three classes of effectiveness to increase, to decrease and not to change airflow rate in the specific branch by altering aerodynamic resistance in the branch. 2) Distribution of position of branches, belonging to each class, related to a specific branch is one of the macroscopic characteristic of a network which is the inherent property of every network. 3) A relation of the aerodynamic resistances of any two branches to keep a constant airflow rate in the specified branch is shown as a monotonous curve. 4) Ventilation transition diagram with the rate of airflow in the two branches as coordinates, and for different rates of airflow in the specific branch as the parameter, is found to be straight lines. 5) Existing range of airflow rates In the specified branch is given as a parameter in the enclosed area in the ventilation transition diagram. Moreover, an expert system to assist ventilation control using a transition diagram of airflow rate is introduced in this paper.

The applicability of biosorbent materials for the removal of uranium and other heavy metals from synthetic and actual uranium mil 1 tailing (UMT) solutions has been investigated. The biosorbent materials used in this study were barium loaded beads of alginate, alginate-dextran sulfate, alginate-carrageenan, and alginate-xanthan gum. These studies were performed in stirred vessels and packed columns. It was observed that 100 percent of the uranium could be removed from a synthetic solution following 2 hours of contact time in a stirred vessel, and 80-100% of U, V, Mo, Mn, Sr, and Zn could be removed from a UMT effluent solution with a packed column. Kinetic evaluations were performed, using a generalized rate equation, on the biosorption of uranium with these barium loaded beads.

The highest recorded loss of life due to the collapse of mine workings occurred at the Coalbrook North Colliery in South Africa on 21st January, 1960. A total of 437 persons died when bord and pillar workings collapsed over an area exceeding one square mile The whole mass of strata from the 470 ft (143 m) deep seam to the surface being affected. Although the Coalbrook disaster was unique in its scale the problem of pillar failure, particularly in old workings, is by no means uncommon nor confined to recent history. Indeed, the collapse of large pillared areas was a regular feature of mining in the north of England in the early part of the nineteenth century. When a section of underground workings collapses, the air under the descending roof is compressed very rapidly. The pressurised air is dissipated subsequently at a rate governed by the leakage paths available. If the collapsing area is small, such as the case of a local fall of roof, then there will be little danger of an air blast. If, however, an extensive area collapses suddenly then the rapid compression of air will give rise to a pressure shock wave that will be transmitted through the remaining workings as an air blast. If worked out areas are connected to current workings via unstopped airways an air blast caused by pillar failure in the old workings will be extremely hazardous to personne1 and may cause extensive damage to equipment, perhaps even reaching to surface plant. At Coalbrook, the air blast blew out a wall in the surface fan house. Areas that are considered liable to sudden collapse may be isolated from current workings by the construction of stoppings. However, such stoppings must be capable of withstanding the &apos;hammerblow&apos; effect of peak air pressures developed during the collapse. The work described in this paper was undertaken in order to determine the maximum air pressures that stoppings must withstand during a major pillar failure. The result has been a method of establishing peak air pressures that is quick and simple to use. Readers who are concerned primarily with the practical application of the method are advised to turn directly to the last main section of the paper.

In the Czech Republic nitrogen was first used for the fight against the mine fire in 1949 (Hajek,1969). In the years 1949¬1996 the consumption of nitrogen in the Ostrava-Karvina Coal Basin /OKB/ reached more than 220 mil. m-3. The main source of nitrogen in the OKB is a central pipeline now. Gas nitrogen is used for the prevention of spontaneous combustion in gobs of longwall faces. The nitrogen infusion technology (Froger,1985), often called "franca technology", has been applied in the Czech coal mines since 1982. The aspects of the nitrogen infusion technol¬ogy can be theoretically solved by the calculation of mixing two gas streams in the filtration space. Longwall faces are parts of the ventilation network of the coal mine. The intake airflow of the longwall face is divided into the airflow passing through the face and a part of air losses passing through the gob. Air leakages through the gob and nitrogen in¬jected into the gob mix there. There is the main problem to solve air leakages in the gob. Usually, the principles of the gob aerody¬namics were used by many authors (Glusberg,1988;Voracek, 1994; Sulkowski,1993; Michailov, 1995; Dziurzynski, 1995; Kolarczyk, 1995; Saghafi, 1995; Sedlaty, 1993) that are applied to our case as well.

The renaissance in extractive metallurgical practices for gold and silver recovery is far from over. This is one conclusion of a three year investigation into innovations in Cold & Silver Recovery by Randol International Ltd. (1981, 1983). The six volume reference report reviews a host of new processes and innovative applications of older metallurgical practices. Some of these were summarized by von Michaelis (1982, 1982a). There are several reasons to expect this renaissance to continue. One reason is the nature of gold and silver deposits. The list of known occurrences of These metals is very extensive. There are literally tens of thousands of prospects but over 99% of these are too low grade, too small or too refractory for a viable operation employing conventional processing.
