A hybrid boundary element-finite element model was formulated to model roof bolt reinforcement of the roof strata with bedding planes. This model was used to analyze the stress distribution around a rectangular opening with variables such as opening width-height ratio, number of bolts installed, number/location of bedding planes, in-situ stresses, etc. The most critical areas are identified and the number and length of roof bolt required are then determined. Two case examples are illustrated.

New, larger cutters requiring higher operating loads and thus increased cutterhead thrust, higher cut¬terhead speeds and more pronounced demands of maintaining high penetration rates also in mixed ground, constantly augment the loads on TBM main bearings. At the same time, the demand of a single TBM model covering a wide diameter range limits the available space for the main bearing at the smaller end. Innovative concepts and advanced methods of calculating bearing loads and lifetimes are needed to meet the demands which TBM suppliers and their customers face. This paper reviews different design approaches and covers the influence of lubrication on bearing life and condition monitoring as well.

"The applications for automation continue to expand within the mining industry. These applications can range from the startup, control, and shutdown of processing plants to the autonomous operation of surface haulage trucks. However, the term “automation” should not necessarily be interpreted as the total elimination of human interventions since numerous mining processes can be partially automated. The future survivability of many mining operations will be influenced by a company’s willingness and ability to understand, accept, and utilize this technology. The mining workforce, including management and engineering, should be familiar with the technological capabilities and limitations for effectively implementing automation into mines for improving safety and productivity. The Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky has recognized this educational gap and developed an automation laboratory, along with project-oriented courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The laboratory and the course objectives are described in this paper, as well as the skills and abilities that students obtain at the completion of the course(s). BACKGROUND The touted benefits of automation include: improved productivity, lower operating costs, reduced drudgery of repetitive operations performed by workers, and the removal of workers from hazardous locations. The acceptance of advanced technology by the mining industry, however, has traditionally been slow. This cautious approach is understandable considering the complex and harsh conditions routinely encountered in mining operations. Bad experiences with some premature installations of newly hyped technologies may have also resulted in lingering skepticism by many mine operators. Nonetheless, with thoroughly demonstrated reliability and proven applications, automation based on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) has made significant inroads into the mining industry. Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are the workhorses of automation. They were originally conceived in the late 1960s, long before the invention of the personal computer (PC). Initial PLC applications were directed towards sequential relay control in manufacturing plants, which subsequently eliminated the use of “relay logic” that was based on hard-wired electromechanical relays. With continuous advancements in electronics and computer technology over the years, PLCs have evolved into sophisticated and powerful devices with very stable operating systems. They are designed for deterministic logic execution with extreme consistency in timing, along with a high tolerance to temperature, humidity, and vibration (Smith 2003). Because of their robust characteristics, PLC networks now provide the backbone for most industrial automation applications."

Impurity metals can markedly influence the anodic dissolution of gold in the presence of cyanide. Several important findings related to the influence of lead are reviewed and some new observations presented. Based on the effect of pH, the scan direction, and voltage, it may be shown there are three separate voltage regimes where lead influences the anodic dissolution of gold. These are related to Pb°/ HPbO2, Au-Pb /HPbO2, and HPbO2/PbC2; oxidation-reduction reactions which provide low resistance paths for electron exchange. The gold dissolution rate was determined by direct solution analysis and is compared to the rate implied by electrochemical measurements.

The United States is the world's largest producer of hydrofluoric acid (HF), with its 1971 output of 317,000 short tons representing about 40 percent of the estimated Free World production. U. S. production has increased over five fold in the past 20 years, with a growth rate of about 7 percent per year between 1960 and 1970. However, the growth rate to 1977 is expected to be less than 5 percent per year, due primarily to a reduced rate of growth in requirements by the aluminum industry and an expected increase in imports from Canada and Mexico. This discussion will include our analyses of the consumption pattern for HF in 1972 and the factors influencing the demand forecast for 1977.

The principles of quality management are well developed and, from a practical stand- point, thoroughly implemented in the process industries of Japan. Although these principles are now applied to the U.S. manufacturing industry, and as a result, the steel industry, they have been largely ignored in the non-ferrous and precious metals industries. This paper presents the concepts and practical approaches to implement a total quality management program. Contrary to the beliefs of many managers, such a program increases yields, recoveries and output while it decreases unit costs. In fact, quality management incorporating statistical process control will be an essential ingredient for metallurgical plants to effectively compete in the '90's.

INTRODUCTION Radon, thoron and their airborne daughter products may result in a significant biological hazard when they are concentrated in enclosed places such as mines, houses and caves. High concentrations of radon and its particulate daughter have long, been known to be a causative agent for lung cancer to uranium miner: (Archer 1973). More recently increasing concern has been expressed on the possible health hazards associated with long term exposures over large population groups to low levels of radon daughters (Cohen 1980, Stranden 1980). Due to its peculiar geological features, Italy has various natural environments where the content of uranium and thorium in the soil may increase underground radioactivity. The presence in Italy of many underground waters rich in radon may be considered a further important source of radon in underground mines. A preliminary survey of the radon and radon daughter air concentrations in italian underground mines was started in 1971 (Bottino 1973). Furthermore many studies (Sciocchetti 1978, Sciocchetti 1980, Clemente 1980) have been performed during the last ten year to characterize the natural radiation environment in Italy. It has been also demonstrated that 21OPb/21OPo skeletal burden in spa workers and non-uranium miners can be heavily increased by the exposure (short or/and prolonged) to high levels of radon daughter air concentration (Clemente 1980). All these studies have been of great help to put in the right prospective the radiation hazards linked to the underground working activity in non-uranium italian mines. Two main actions have been prosecuted from 1971 until today in order to evaluate in greater detail such radiation hazards and then, when needed, to obtain their reduction to levels which may be considered acceptable. The two actions may schematically described as the following: - Measurement of the radon and daughter (and thoron and daughter when needed) concentrations in most of the italian non-uranium mines. The assessment of the radiation hazards linked to both the annual average lung exposure and the 210 Pb - 210 Po annual average dose to the skeleton is then performed for each considered mine by taking into account the main parameters characteristic of the mine. - Set up of a national regulatory recommendation on the permissible limits for the radiation exposure of workers due to underground mining activity. Such recommendation have been established in 1978 and have been designed in order to implement a national radiation protection practice during the underground mining activity. In this paper a summary description of the results obtained during the execution of these two actions will be given. MATERIAL AND METHODS Measurement of Radon, Thoron and their Daughter Products The excution of the planned survey requires the availability of specific techniques and instruments for measuring the different parameters characterizing the radon, thoron and their daughter exposure in mines. A reference laboratory was set up for the development and the standardization of the measurement procedures. Measurements of radon, thoron and daughter concentrations are performed by various methods: instanteneous or grab sampling methods and continuous read out monitors. The radon concentration is usually measured by a modified version of the two filter method. Mine air is drawn into a polyethylene bag and the sample is there after injected into a two filter tube; after sampling the exit filter is counted by the alpha spectrometric technique. The measurements is completed in a total time of less than 25 minutes at a sensitivity level as low as 3.7 Bq/m3 for a tube volume of 15 1. The measurement of radon and thoron daughter concentration and of the relevant potential alpha energy concentration is performed by means of a portable spectrometric apparatus which was developed at our laboratory (Sciocchetti 1981). The device allows multiple operating modes: instantaneous or brief sampling period and automatic cycles; computer data processing is then provided. This paper considers optimization of the design and operation of an air-injected hydrocyclone (AIHC) via a genetic algorithm (CAI. The AIHC is a mineral separating device, developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, that combines the selectivity of flotation with the capacity and simplicity of hydrocyclones. GA's are search procedures based on the mechanics of natural genetics. Computer results demonstrate the ability of a GA to rapidly locate design and operating parameters that improve AIHC performance. A computer model of the GA-designed AIHC predicts improved recovery over that currently being obtained with an AIHC in operation at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Tuscaloosa Research Center.

The simulation of randomness in a system of components is important in certain types of systems analyses. This paper presents procedures for generating ventilation networks that are random in many of their characteristics and which can be used to study the performance characteristics of various mine ventilation network analysis procedures without introducing undue bias as a result of the nature of the network. Among the parameters of a network that affect the efficiency of a network analysis procedure are: (1) the interconnection pattern of airways, (2) the distribution of resistances in the network, (3) the number and location of fans, (4) the fan characteristic curve, (5) the size of the network (number of branches), and (6) the density of the network (number of nodes compared with the number of branches). In the procedures proposed here, a single fan with a fixed characteristic is used to simplify the problem and eliminate the fan as a source of variation. The resistances of the airways, the pattern of interconnection of the airways, and the fan location are randomly chosen in an attempt to eliminate the bias in the performance characteristics of the network analysis methods caused by these parameters. A method of generating biconnected networks while keeping the "randomness" of these other parameters is suggested. At the same time, the size and the density of networks are controlled to investigate their impacts on the performances of the network analysis procedures. The combination of these two variables has been termed the "level of complexity" of the network in this paper. Finally, a summary and conclusions section outlines some characteristics of the networks generated, using the random generation procedures outlined in the paper.

The countries of Eastern Europe are former members of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA). Geographically, they are located in Central Europe (Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia) and Southeastern Europe, largely in the Balkans (Yugoslavia*, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania*). It is important to remember that all of the countries of Eastern Europe had central planning imposed on them by the Soviet Union during the years following World War II. "Stalinist" policy for industrial development had three important tenets: • central economic planning, or a nonmarket-based command economy with administratively set prices; • economic priorities that stressed the development of heavy industries such as mining, metallurgy (steel) and heavy machine building; and • self-sufficiency at all costs, which was aimed at abolishing reliance on the world capitalist market, or reducing it to a minimum. Essentially, the system of industrialization that was used in the Soviet Union in the 1930s and 1940s was imposed on Eastern Europe. Organic market economic development in Eastern Europe ceased during this period. The flaws of this experiment became apparent when mineral processing facilities were set up in many areas of Eastern Europe that did not have reliable resources. Poland, Hungary and Romania are good examples of this situation. The Soviet Union became the principal supplier of iron ore and other minerals and mineral fuels, not only to these countries but to the Bloc as a whole.

This paper describes a new development in the cyanidation of gold ores, which we expect will result in a major improvement in the way many gold ores are treated. The process has evolved through work at Hazen Research, Inc. for Kamyr, Inc. and in brief, the consists of utilizing oxygen rather than air in the carbon-in-1 each (CIL) process. We refer to this improved process for all ores amenable to cyanide leaching as carbon-in-1each with oxygen or CILO.

Discrete element is a numerical technique for describing the collision dynamics and motion of an assembly of particles. In particular, calculations are done on full three-dimensional space with a force-contact law for collisions and Newton’s law for subsequent motion. It may be said that there is no empiricism in this approach. The paper describes the full scale simulation of large diameter semiautogenous grinding mill of size 40X24 ft. It is shown that the simulation predicts the power draft of plant size mill extremely accurately. Also these simulations have been adapted uniquely to assess the motion of pebbles and slurry in pulp lifters. The passage of slurry from pulp lifters into trunnion is extremely important since flow-back and carryover must be avoided at all cost. The dynamics of slurry flow through pulp lifters is also described in this paper.

Wastewaters generated during the extraction of gold from the ore can contain a variety of contaminants such as cyanide, heavy metals and arsenic. Proper management of these wastewaters is therefore necessary to minimize the negative impact of gold mining and milling operations on the environment. The Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC),located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, has been involved in several studies related to the evaluation of various effluent treatment technologies which are relevant to the treatment and proper management of gold mill effluents. These studies have included bench and pilot scale tests, and the evaluation offull-scale systems. Furthermore, the WTC staff developed protocols for cyanide analysis in gold mill effluents, and a mathematical model for predicting the degradation of cyanide in tailings ponds. The information generated by the WTC staff has been referenced in several reports and papers published over the last ten years (Schmidt et.al. 1982, Simovic & Snodgrass 1989, Whittle et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1991). Recently, the WTC has started to develop a micro­computer based expert system for use by decision makers in the gold mining industry and relevant government agencies who are involved in process design, process evaluation, costing, evaluation of the best practicable technology, approval of suggested effluent management systems, and so on. This paper presents some relevant background information and a discussion of the latest version of the expert system being developed by the WTC.

Next month, American Commercial Barge Line Company will begin moving coal from mines on the old Camp Breckinridge property in Western Kentucky to TVA's new 2600 MW steam plant at Cumberland City, Tennessee. By April of 1973, this movement will reach a level of 7,000,000 tons per year. TVA bought the coal rights to this property from the General Services Administration in 1965 for approximately $7 million. The reserve contains about 120 million tons of recoverable No.9 coal, and about the same recover-able amount of No. 11 coal. TVA then contracted through competitive bidding with Peabody Coal Company to mine the No.9 seam through two slope shafts. The mines are about 300 feet deep and are separated by the one major fault on this property. The mine portals are approximately 3-1/2 miles apart, with the northern portal being over nine miles distant from the Ohio River (see Figure No.1). In 1969 TV A took bids on alternate methods for transporting 120 million tons of coal to Cumberland City at seven million tons per year. These alter-natives included overland transportation to the Ohio River by rail or conveyor, water transportation from Union County, Kentucky to Cumberland City, and total transportation packages from Camp Breckinridge to Cumberland City. The latter could be a joint land/water package, or all land (rail). Ultimately American Commercial Barge Line was awarded an $88 million package transportation contract to convey the coal from Camp Breckinridge to Uniontown, Kentucky; to store it at Uniontown in a quantity sufficient to allow ratable delivery to the steam plant; and to barge from Uniontown to Cumberland City via the Ohio and Cumberland Rivers.

The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located approximately 50 miles (80 km) north of Elko. Nevada, U.S.A. and produces between 250 and 300 thousand ounces of gold annually. The Joint Venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining Company and 30% owned by Meridian Gold Company. Independence Mining Company is the operator. The Jerrin Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 mining a series of open pit mines. Since the early 1990's, the discovery of deeper ores has required the joint venture to develop and mine a significant portion of its annual production utilizing underground mining methods. Underground production started with the West Generator Mine in 1993 followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Presently, two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is budgeted to produce 128 thousand ounces in 1997. This paper documents the major transition/redevelopment of the Jerritt Canyon mining methods.
