While calcium ferrite slags have been successfully used in continuous copper converting for the last 30 years, ferrous calcium silicate slag was proposed about 8 years ago as an additional alternative for copper smelting. Although both slags are normal extensions of each other their phase relations have not been completely clarified. In this paper the liquidus relations of both slags have been quantified at various areas that cover both of them. The existing experimental data have been first reviewed and discussed in relation to the solidification procedure. An original physical model is then used to predict various diagrams of the liquidus surface of both slags. It is shown that the ternary liquidus diagrams normally used for FeOx-SiO2-CaO system are not suitable for industrial slags. The new model diagrams of Fe/CaO versus SiO2 and Fe/SiO2 versus CaO as well as Fe/CaO versus Temperature and Fe/SiO2 versus temperature are proven to be much more convenient for ferrite and ferrous calcium silicate slags. Based on these diagrams the effect of SiO2 and CaO on the melting temperature is quantified. The effect of Cu2O is also quantified through the model. Some Fe/CaO versus Cu2O and Fe/SiO2versus CaO at various copper contents are predicted and the results show good agreement with the experimental data. It is also shown that in the presence of liquid copper, Cu2O is dissolved in the slag depending on the oxidation degree of the system and might lower the liquidus temperature. Polycrystalline oxide superconductors that have the perovskite structure, that are oxygen deficient, and that have compositions based. on the so-called. 1-2-3 (YBa2Cu3O7) compound, were investigated.. The materials exhibit a high critical transition to superconductivity at temperatures near 90oK. It was determined that maintaining the oxygen content within the correct range in connection with an appropriate amount of CU ions in the crystal lattice leads to high-critical temperature (Tc:) superconducting properties. High-Tc: superconductors with a critical temperature in the range of 100°K were developed. Further investigations, based. on the theoretical examinations of the origin of superconductivity, have been performed and are discussed..

"Small inclusions removal from molten steel in a continuous casting tundish by gas bubbles, which were generated in the turbulent flow region by introducing inert gas, was analyzed theoretically and the inclusion-bubble adhesion and flotation process was also observed by high-speed photo-graph in water model. Results showed that small inclusions in the range of 20-50µm removal from molten steel by bubbles flotation involves three stages: contact, adhesion and flotation. The inclusion-bubble adhesion processes include two ways: inclusions adhering to the upper part of the bubble and inclusions adhering to the lower part of the bubble. As the bubble floats up, the number of inclusions adhering to the bubble are increased. The proper size of bubbles, which could enhance small inclusions removal efficiency, should be controlled in the range of 1-2mm.IntroductionReducing inclusions content in molten steel is a very important way to improve quality of steel, and one of the main tasks in steel making process.A variety of methods have been used for inclusions removal in molten steel. At present, the main approaches to remove inclusions are gas stirring, slag cleaning, filtering, centrifugal separating, and by means of ultrasonic or electromagnetic field. Among these techniques, gas stirring is the most widely and effectively method for inclusions removal. Inclusions in molten steel will be aggregated and generated to form larger size inclusions, and subsequently floated to the surface of molten steel by buoyancy; meanwhile, some inclusions will be adhered to bubbles and floated together to metal-slag interface where inclusions are absorbed by the covering slag layer. Some research work showed that flow behaviors of small bubbles are different from that of big ones [1-2], and smaller bubbles are more efficiency for fine inclusions removal in molten steel.There are many methods to generate bubbles. During steelmaking process, highly turbulent flow in the ladle shroud can split introduced inert gas into small bubbles, which enhances the removal of fine inclusions from molten steel. Turbulent flow of molten steel injected into tundish from ladle shroud has a high speed and it is a strong turbulent area in continuous casting. The gas can be introduced into the shroud below the slide gate. The high turbulence flow would break up the gas into small gas bubbles. Fine inclusions will be easily adhered to small bubbles and subsequently floated to the surface of molten steel. Generation of small bubbles in ladle shroud have been studied in some literatures [3-4]. Some research have analyzed the fine inclusions removal with injecting gas from the ladle shroud by mathematical simulation, and the results show that the refining method can obviously improve the removal efficiency of fine inclusions in tundish [5-8]."

Norddeutsche Affinerie has operated an Outokurnpu type flash smelter for more than 25 years. In recent years, the concentrate smelting capacity was increased to 750,000 tpy, double of the initial design capacity. Maintaining this high performance level requires very good metallurgical process control. It is not enough to base this control on thermodynamics and kinetics since the furnace is highly dynamic. Understanding these dynamics and being able to quantify them can have significant financial benefits. A mass and energy balance model was developed and is discussed based on measured data. At this time the model is based on the major elements copper, iron, sulfur and silica. With it is possible to quantify the differences of the various material streams such as matte, slag, flue dust, matte carry-over to settling furnace, etc. Comparing the reconciled energy balance model with the fundamental thermodynamic model makes it possible to quantify the dynamics. These dynamics are related to input parameters using methods such as statistics and neural nets. In the future this database will be used to improve the understanding of the dynamic process as well as the dynamic process control.

Eddy current separators are increasingly used by the auto shredder operators to produce higher grade of nonferrous metal concentrate for recycling. While this increases the unit price of the concentrate, metal losses through inefficient metal recovery quickly offset the price differential. We show how to optimize the eddy current separation system at the shredder to maximize mate- rial throughput, nonferrous metal recovery and grade of the nonferrous metal concentrate.

"Printed Wiring Board (PWB) is a platform upon which microelectronic components such as semiconductor chips and capacitors are mounted. It is also called printed circuit board (PCB). In the PWBs, the organic substances are approximately 72%. The main composition of organic substances in PWBs is ethoxyline resin bromide or ethoxyline resin chlorinate. Depending on the different application and design of the PWB, various metals may be used in the manufacturing process, including precious metals such as copper, lead, silver, gold, platinum, and toxic metals such as mercury, cadmium, barium, gallium, cadmium, lead, bismuth. The current paper reviewed the recycling process for waste PWB materials, including mechanical recycling, combustion for energy recovery and different pyrolysis processes, such as vacuum pyrolysis, atmospheric inert pyrolysi and flux pyrolysis process, and hydrometallurgical recycling process.Backgrounds of Electronic ScrapsProduction and use of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE), such as TV sets, computers, mobile phones and many other daily-life items, have dramatically increased over past decades, while the lifespan of many products becomes shorter"". The rapid innovation in technology in past decades has resulted in availability of cheaper and better electronic products in the market. Thus the production of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is also increasing, with estimates of 20-50 million tons per year being generated worldwide2), and it is a problem that governments and policy makers have to handle W). WEEE is also called ""E-wastes"" or ""E-scraps"". From the points of view of recycling and the valuable materials in the used EEE, ""E-scrap"" is more appropriate than ""E-waste"" since the used EEE are not real wastes to be dumped but had much benefit to recycle. In the US, it was estimated that over 315 million computers between 1997 and 2004 and 185 million computers between 2004 and 2007 would become obsolete 5). E-scrap is the fastest-growing part of the U.S. garbage stream 6). It is estimated that only 20% of the E-scrap generated within the US is currently collected and treated, with as much as 80% being unaccounted for7)."

"For steel investigation and development, exact knowledge about the microstructural state is required. The information gained from 2D images often can't properly reflect the real 3D microstructural properties. In order to gain reliable information for meaningful models, simulations and correlations, it is necessary to accompany standard metallography with 3D information, which, unfortunately, is very difficult to access. This article presents a procedure for serial sectioning in combination with light optical microscopy. Only standard metallographic tools are employed in combination with image manipulation freeware. 3D microstructural data were extracted from three multiphase steel grades and in two cases virtual 3D-models of microstructural phases were generated.Three Dimensions Of MicrostructuresSince the invention of steel, craftsmen, inventers and engineers tried to improve its properties and tailor them to the requirements of new developments. For systematic development and enhancement of steels, the capability to investigate its inner structure is highly important, because it represents the linchpin between material production and properties. By having an in-depth understanding how production conditions form the microstructure and also how the microstructural state determines the material properties, steel design can be drastically improved. With this knowledge, microstructures can be designed to provide target material properties and process conditions can be identified that form these structures. Due to the key role of microstructure, the capability to gain accurate information about it is indispensable. It is the task of metallography to access and extract descriptive quantitative microstructural data like fractions, sizes, shapes and distributions of the different constituents. The most commonly used investigation tool in metallography is the light optical microscope (LOM). Besides this tool, additional high resolution techniques like Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) or Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) have become increasingly important. With these and other available methods, extensive information on the microstructural state of a material can be gained. Unfortunately, most metallographic methods have a major loss of information systematically built in. Analyses of microstructures are usually performed on surfaces, i.e. on 2D areas that emerge by cutting through the 3D material structure. This means, a complete dimension of information is not taken into account. How serious this reduction of information is and how it can affect interpretation of structures is exemplarily demonstrated in figure 1, which displays the planar structure emerging from a random cut through a simple 3D structure. It is very difficult to deduce or even imagine the original spatial structure from which this projection emerged and it is impossible to reconstruct it with absolute certainty without further information. The image has emerged from a random cut through a 3D structure of stacked cubes that is displayed in figure 2. The area shown in figure I is outlined. Although artificially constructed, this example demonstrates how distorted and misleading the view on structures can become by ignoring a spatial dimension."

The lateritic nickel ore sample subjected to this experimental study was taken from Çalda ore deposit (Turkey) and contains 1.43% Ni and 0.105% Co. Mineralogical investigations showed that the ore sample contains asbolane, chromite, limonite, hematite, goethite, lepidocrocite, magnetite, serpentine, and clay type minerals together with chalcedon, quartz, calcite, and chlorite. In the acidic leaching experiments, the effects of temperature, acid (H2SO4) concentration, and leaching time on nickel leaching recoveries were investigated. Leaching recovery versus time curves showed a parabolic trend and increasing the temperature shifted that curves to the higher values. The dissolution of nickel from lateritic ore can be explained by a shrinking core model and the apparent activation energy was found as 47.34 kJ/mol in the range given by the literature. The highest Ni and Co leaching efficiencies as 90.2% and 96.8% respectively were obtained at 80°C temperature, 200 g/L H2SO4 concentration, and 8 hours of leaching time.

"The use of polytetrafluoroethylene, PTFE, as a solid sorbent for elemental sulfur during pressure oxidation of chalcopyrite was investigated. The effects of agitation, PTFE particle size and lingin sulfonate addition were evaluated using leaching conditions that were otherwise similar to those employed in the CESL process. The effects of these factors and their interactions on chalcopyrite oxidation are explained in terms of interfacial forces and solid-solid interactions. Using relatively fine PTFE powder with vigorous agitation resulted in about 100% copper extraction in less than 90 minutes without the need for grinding of the flotation concentrate.IntroductionThe extraction of copper from sulfide ores has always been dominated by the conventional pyrometallurgical smelting process. Though much effort has been made to develop various hydrometallurgical processing routes, smelting remains as the dominant process, treating approximately 80% of the chalcopyrite concentrates worldwide [1]. However, some of recently emerged techniques for treating chalcopyrite through hydrometallurgical routes are showing results that are competitive with smelting in terms of economical feasibility. Representative methods include: Activox Process, CESL Process, Anglo/UBC Process, High Temperature Pressure Oxidation, and Bio-Oxidation. Among these, the CESL processes operate at a medium temperature range (typically 140-150GC) and oxygen pressure of 100 psi, with chloride as a catalyst, and reportedly achieve copper extractions of about 95% with a light regrinding of flotation concentrate to a p95 of 45 ìðé [2]. In spite of this satisfactory extraction result, the leach residues contain significant amounts of conglomerates which contain a small amount of unreacted concentrate [2], The conglomerations are formed because the elemental sulfur generated is liquid and sticky (melting point of sulfur being 119°C), and has a tendency to wet the sulfide mineral surface, a fact which inhibits the oxidation of the minerals. Michoacan?s beach sands with interesting concentrations of ilmenite were studied to produce titanium by hydrometallurgical techniques. Nevertheless, among titanium species, there are different additional components of Michoacan?s beach sands which could be of interesting applications. Some of them are likely to be applied for the manufacture of nanocrystalline ceramics. Although, the most applied mineral dressing to treat these kind of sands, that contain magnetic species (i.e., ilmenite, magnetite), is a combination of gravity separation and magnetic separation, it could be of a great deal of benefit to apply the information regarding the surface characteristics of the sands? components, in order to study the application of flotation technologies to separate selectively those species with commercial value.

Clearly, governmental regulation throughout the West will become harsher. Equally clearly, the industry has? failed to educate the public regarding lead. Instead of public support for a critical mineral, we face widespread public ignorance and paranoia. If we can demonstrate the public interest benefits of the industry, the 1990s will be a decade of continuing growth -- not dynamic growth, certainly, but growth at least comparable to the world economy. If, however, we fail to demonstrate the industry's public interest benefits, the 1990s could mark the beginning of the end of our business.
