"EXECUTIVE SUMMARYINTRODUCTIONThe commercial incentives for using molten aluminum in casting operations are numerous and substantial. Although these incentives apply broadly to both shape castings (foundry) operations and wrought alloy production, the merit of a particular motive is indeed downstream processing sensitive. Melting cost reduction is a universal incentive that impacts on essentially all aluminum products. At a natural gas burner cost of $4.50 per therm, for example, the reverberatory furnace energy cost is at least $0.01 per pound of aluminum melted, exclusive of melt loss, fixed costs, and other expenses. The Aluminum Statistical Review' cited 3.188 million metric tons of secondary aluminum that was recovered by the industry in 1995. This represents a re-melt energy cost of over $70 million. Other incentives to use molten secondary aluminum include throughput enhancement, metal chemistry assurances, environmental considerations, and the avoidance of an in-house scrap processing operation.A traditional disincentive to use molten secondary aluminum is metal quality. If a particular secondary processing operation was successful in achieving and preserving an acceptable metal quality level prior to shipment, the subsequent metal transfer and ladle delivery events would frequently obviate these efforts. For example, a metal superheat on the order of several hundred degrees is required for an unheated transfer ladle to travel 3 to 4 hours to a customer location. The rate of the y-alumina formation reaction approximately doubles for every 120°F increase in temperature, therefore, the effect of excess superheat on melt loss and metal quality is considerable. The Sepon Copper Project is located in Laos and has a mineable reserve of approximately 16Mt of ore grading 5% copper with minor gold and silver values. The deposit is a clay-hosted secondary copper mineral suite, predominantly chalcocitic in nature with associated pyrite. The current project design is based on the production of 60,000t/a of LME Grade A cathode by an acid leaching process followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning. Significant metallurgical testwork was conducted as part of the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) with process challenges identified and overcome at each phase of testing. Flowsheet configuration is geared to autogenously generating sufficient acid and ferric iron to meet gangue acid consumption and to leach the copper. The ability to maintain acid and ferric levels in the process liquors is strongly influenced by the proportion of pyrite in the ore presented to the autoclave. This paper will outline flowsheet development from preliminary variability testing to pilot plant and DFS design. The Sepon process solution seeks a balance between operability and capital/operating costs, and provides insights into the basic mechanisms influencing flowsheet selection for these ore types.

In situ synthesis of discontinuously reinforced aluminum alloy metal matrix composites was investigated. Aluminum alloy (A356: Al-7 wt% Si) was reinforced with dispersed AlN particles. Thermodynamic calculations were made for the composition determination of various phases formed during bubbling of NH3 gas into the Al alloy melts in the temperature range 1173-1473 K. Experiments were carried out for in situ production of AlN particles with the reaction between Al melt and NH3 gas in high temperature resistance furnace at 1473 K. The products were characterized using SEM, EDS and XRD. Effect of bubbling time of NH3 gas on the AlN formed in the composites was studied. The amount of AlN reinforcement in the Al alloy composites was observed to be in the range of 5 to 35 wt%. Good agreement was observed between the experimental and thermodynamic calculated data on the composition of AlN in Al alloy composites.

In rapidly solidified Fe-Nd-B permanent magnet alloys, the content and distribution of Nd-rich intermetallic and Fe-phases determine coercivity Hc and remanence Br. Consequently, microstructure plays a crucial role in deter- mining the (BH) max-product of permanent magnets fabricated from these alloys. A study has been initiated to investigate changes in microstructure and the effects on magnetic properties as the material is processed from arc-melted ingot to melt-spun flakes and finally to a product consolidated by hot-forming. Anisotropic magnetization behaviour has been observed in rapidly solidified flakes after low-temperature annealing.

The widely accepted inverse relationship between copper prices ail stocks, has been commonly used by analysts to explain the behavior of the copper market and to forecast film copper pries. However, empirical data have not shown such a clear relationship between copper prices and stacks. Existing evidence only indicates a weak tong-nut relationship that vanishes in some periods. In this paper a simple comprehensive model is provided which explains both parallel and opposite direction movements between prices and stocks. Former are explained mainly by stocks demand expansions-contractions while the latter are in essence due to increases in the supply curve. Furthermore, econometric estimations are provided, thus giving a powerful tool to forecast and explain price developments of the copper market.

CrN, TiN and Ti-B-N coatings were deposited onto H13 hot-working tool steel and alumina substrates by arc-PVD. The coatings were characterized with respect to their mechanical and structural properties. Oxidation behavior of the coatings on alumina substrates was investigated by TG/DTA. Samples coated on H13 substrates were oxidized in a tube furnace under atmospheric conditions at specific temperatures determined from TG/DTA tests of the same coatings deposited on alumina substrates. The oxide scale morphology was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Oxide scale thickness change and TG data were used to calculate oxidation reaction activation energies. It was determined that boron addition into TiN coating improves not only mechanical properties but also oxidation resistance. Depending on the substrate material different oxidation activation energy values for the TiN and Ti-B-N coatings were determined revealing the importance of film morphology on oxidation resistance.

When the applied current is interrupted in a copper electrowinning plant, and then is back in operation, the lead anodes tend to corrode. In order to decrease the corrosion, the damage protective ("back up") anodic currents are applied during the period of interruption. The current work aims to establish the effect of the concentrations of sulphuric acid, copper and cobalt on the anode corrosion, to quantify the effect of various anodic protection levels on the anode corrosion and to propose a method to select the appropriate protective current density value.

All integrated steel plants have hospitals of 650 – 750 bed capacity with modern facilities to serve it's employees and adjoining localities in a clean and sustainable environment.According to the Bio-Medical Waste(Management and Handling) Rules, 1998 and as amended to date, all Bio-Medical waste which is generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or in research activities pertaining thereto or in the production or testing of biologicals are to be categorized and taken to any facility wherein treatment, disposal of this waste or processes incidental to such treatment or disposal is carried out.The hospital management has created adequate treatment facility for Sharp and Infectious Waste, Pathological Waste and Anatomical Waste through Autoclave, Shredding Machine and developing deep burial pits. Some of these hospitals is ISO 9000-14000 certified. Creating technology, securing patent rights, and managing a patent portfolio are time-sensitive and dynamic activities. Agreements should be in place with technology partners (employees, contractors, joint venture partners), prior to embarking on research and development projects, so as to mitigate future disputes over patent rights. Technology partners should be educated on patent law basics so as to be mindful of patent bar triggering events. Accurate records must be maintained to capture information relevant for preparation and filing of patent application, including subject matter, names of inventors, and invention date. Developed inventions should be evaluated for whether to file for patent protection, delay patenting until technology is further developed, maintain trade secrecy, or effect deliberate public disclosure. Once decision is made to file for patent protection, time is of the essence, and application for patent protection should be filed as soon as possible, as many countries award patents on a "first-to file" basis. Decisions on where to file are made having regard to potential competitive advantages versus cost considerations, and can be delayed by taking advantage of priority rights recognized in patent legislation of most countries. Once patents are granted, competitors must be policed for potential patent infringement, and legal action may be necessary to prevent patent infringement.

This paper presents new theoretical and experimental data on possible mechanisms for the formation of micro- and nanophases on the surface of sulfide minerals un der the effect of high-power nanosecond electromagnetic pulses (HPEMP). The gas outflow from nanosecond breakdown channels of sulfide minerals under the effect of HPEMP is considered, with allowance for the condensation of iron vapors. The condensation of matter in an outflowing jet is shown to be an effective mechanism for structureal and chemical transformations of sulfide surfaces. It is established that electrode potential of pyrrhotite is moved together in the negative party owing to formation of iron oxides (hydroxides) and iron sulfates by HPEMP, that provides decrease of xanthate sorption and reduction flotation extraction of this sulfide, whereas electrode potential of pentlandite gets more positive values at the expense of additional formation of element sulfur, that causes increase of xanthate sorption and, as a consequence, increase of nickel sulfide extraction.

This paper describes an experimental investigation into the effects of process parameters on product quality during an aluminum recycling process. In order to build a model relating recovery to the process parameter variables and then use the model for prediction, process optimisation, or process control, a historical data analysis is employed by observing patterns in the datalogged information at IMCO Recycling Ltd. In previous work, we emphasised the importance of expressing the results of an experiment quantitatively, by implementation of a Taguchi approach, to facilitate understanding, interpretation and implementation. This research presents the technical tools that are needed to achieve quality improvement in recycling of aluminum. In this study we apply the use of historical data matching through a Taguchi orthogonal analysis, in order to control and improve the quality characteristic. For this purpose, a numerical model is developed to characterise the inputs and outputs of the process. A response surface methodology (RSM) is employed to find a suitable approximation for the true functional relationship between response and the process parameter variables. The method of least squares is used to estimate the approximating polynomials. Subsequently, Taguchi's method is used to determine the relative significance of each of the parameters. Finally, process management software (written in Visual Basic) is described, and its interface with the process modelling and optimisation routines is discussed.

Many processes developed for the mechanical processing of Automotive Shredder Residue (ASR) suffer from high processing costs. We offer a distinct concept for low-cost mechanical processing still allowing high value-added recycling of the recovered materials. The basic idea behind this approach is to produce saleable pre-concentrates at the lowest possible costs that can be further processed in existing separation facilities. Our process includes screening, size reduction and magnetic separation. Preliminary studies showed that fibers in ASR are magnetic due to adhering rust particles allowing separation into a fiber fraction and a non-magnetic rigid fraction by high-intensity magnetic separation. The fiber fraction is most suited for thermal processing. The rigid fraction mainly consists of plastics and rubbers with up to 10 wt.-% of non-ferrous metals, some inert material and copper wires. This fraction is very well suited for mechanical processing by, e.g., sink-float separation in existing metal separation plants. The non-metal fraction can be processed further to recover the plastics and rubbers. The process proposed in this study is expected to be substantially cheaper than full thermal processing. In addition, as it mainly relies on existing separation facilities, it can be applied in the short term.

The study of the formation and components of copper patina and its conservation has assumed great importance. The changing environment has accelerated the processes of patinas degradation; thus, the exhaustive study of factors capable of affecting the patina formation, growth and durability has assumed great importance for the industrial activity of copper. The main components of the patina, oxides, chlorides, nitrates and sulfates, have been determined; the effect of physical, chemical and microbiological factors on patina formation, particularly the influence of acid rain, natural organic matter, particles and microorganisms have been defined. The effect of different electrolytic solutions that accelerate the formation of copper patinas has been determined, and a review of the state of knowledge of the formation and evolution of metal patinas has been made.

Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) is obtained through calcination, hydration, and carbonation. Thus, the change in each process condition determines the particle size or morphology of PCC. To date, studies on precipitated calcium carbonate have mainly focused on process manufacturing PCC, aimed matter. Still, few studies on calcination or hydration have been conducted. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the effect of hydration condition on the synthesis characteristics of aragonite PCC. Results showed that the particle size of calcium hydroxide changed based on the variation of the initial hydration temperature. In particular, higher initial temperature resulted in the larger particle size of calcium hydroxide used in synthesis. The particle size and yield of aragonite also increased when calcium hydroxide made at high temperature was used. The water/solid ratio or total amount at the hydration time had no effect on the manufacturing process of aragonite, however.

"In steel making ferroalloys occupies a commanding role for production of varied quality of steel. Ferroalloys enable alloying elements such as chromium, silicon, manganese, vanadium etc to be safely and economically introduced into metallurgical processes thus giving certain desirable properties of the alloyed metal. Their importance grew with the progress of the steel metallurgy which implied more diversified alloying elements, in better controlled quantities, in purer steel. The ferroalloy industry became a key supplier to the steel industry. Production of ferroalloys generally involves the use of Electric Arc furnace(EAF) into which raw materials(e.g. various metal ores, quartz, coke, lime etc ) with relatively fluctuating physical compositions are loaded. Due to this, one of the major environmental impacts of producing ferroalloys is the emission of dust and fume from the smelting process. INTRODUCTIONFerro Alloys are essential ingredients used for refining, de-oxidation, desulphurization and alloying addition in the production of different types of steel and hence Ferro Alloy industry forms a back bone of iron and steel in the world. Indian ferro alloy industry is more than 45 years old. It produces most of the bulk ferro alloys and a large number of special ferro alloys. The present installed capacity of the Indian ferro alloy industry is sufficient to meet the requirement of existing level of indigenous steel production of about 46 million tonnes. Revised National Steel Policy – 2008 envisages production of more than 100 million tonnes of steel by the year 2011-12, at proportionate annual growth rate per annum. The focus of the policy is to achieve global competitiveness not only in terms of cost, quality and product-mix but also in terms of global benchmarks of efficiency and productivity. In order to achieve the objectives of National Steel Policy and also to meet the requirement of ferro alloys, the Indian Ferro Alloy Industry has to gear up in terms of enhancement in production capacity, sourcing of raw materials, up gradation of technology, improvement in productivity, automation / mechanization, customer satisfaction etc."

"The McCoy/Cove mine, located in Eureka-Battle Mountain trend of Nevada, is a gold and silver deposit. Case studies of recoverable reserve estimation for gold and silver were made using multiple indicator kriging and volume variance correction. The grade tonnage distributions of recoverable reserves were constructed and compared with the distributions defined by blast hole assays. Optimal pits were generated by Whittle 4D pit optimization package to analyze the impact of different processing recoveries at different economic cutoffs. The results were compared with ordinary kriging. The study indicates that the proposed method for multi-mineral recoverable reserve estimation is more accurate than kriging in tenns of grade and tonnage. The method of using recoverable reserves for pit optimization will maximize global reserve recovery and revenue, and is more efficient than condition simulation regarding computing power.ABSTRACT ONLY"

This paper describes a method for the determination of traces of rare earths using energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF) after preconcentration of their oxine complexes onto activated carbon. Various parameters that influence adsorptive preconcentration of rare earths onto activated carbon viz. pH, amounts of activated carbon and oxine, time of stirring and aqueous phase volume were systematically studied. A numerical method based on simple least square procedure using fifth order polynomial with 25 consecutive values was developed for smoothing and differentiation of EDXRF data which was previously digitized and averaged. First order derivative EDXRF in conjunction with adsorptive preconcentration on activated carbon enables to determine as low as 10 ppb of each of individual rare earth elements.

Over a period of one year, an in-depth investigation was carried out in a conventional copper refinery to understand the behaviour of silver in copper electrolysis. The increase in silver content in the cathodes increases almost linearly with the duration of electrolysis, and the silver content of the electrolyte between the electrodes shows similar behaviour. The silver content of the cathode deposited daily depends directly on the silver concentration of the electrolyte and this, in turn, is strongly influenced by its internal temperature. The average temperature between the electrodes rises from the first to the second and to the third crop, because of the increase in the distance between the electrodes and the heat generated by the passage of the current. The mechanism of dissolution of silver from the anode, and its passage to the cathode, are discussed. Following the change to the Isa system, it was proved that the results and conclusions are analogous. Based on these results, a reduction of more than 20% in silver losses in the cathodes was achieved.

IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. (IBC) has developed and commercialized SuperLig® materials based on Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT), which have proven to be very effective for the removal of bismuth from hydrometallurgical sulfuric acid process streams. The most common application is its removal from copper refinery electrolytes, where bismuth control is extremely critical. IBC has also developed an MRT system for extraction, recovery and refining of palladium from a copper refinery by-product stream originating from the treatment of copper tankhouse slimes. A high purity palladium salt is produced which meets market specifications. Results are reviewed and discussed.

"PET bottles are separated and subsequently crushed into flakes. Except for PET, these flakes contain PE, PVC, paper, adhesives, beverages remainders and mineral impurities. PET itself usually is a glycol and terephthalic and isophthalic acid polymer.The suggested method consists in PET flakes crystallization at 255°C. In the meantime, volatile substances evaporate and PVC disintegrates. Formed crystalline PET is crushed into small particles and then is subject to the basic hydrolysis at an atmospheric pressure. In addition to lye solution, glycol is added in the hydrolysis. Water is eliminated by boiling, which gives rise to suspension of sodium salt of terephthalic acid and glycol. The suspension is skimmed and the filtered glycol is vacuum distilled. Pure glycol is then the distillation product.Crystals are dissolved in water and the solution is filtered, which eliminates PE and impurities. Electrodialysis removes pure terephthalic acid salt from the solution. Glycol solution is returned to the hydrolysis. Terephthalic acid is precipitated by a mineral acid. Subsequently, it is washed and dried. The filtrate is separated through electrodialysis to lye and acid. The lye gets back to the hydrolysis and the acid is used for precipitation. Terephthalic acid and glycol are products in a “polymer grade” quality. The waste is a part of washing waters, distillation residues after glycol regeneration and a filter cake after the terephthalate solution filtration."
