The selection and preparation of activated carbon suitable for specific application can often involve exhaustive adsorbent preparation and testing. This work examined an emerging technique based on modelling the correlation of observed adsorption capacity to the carbon characteristics as a means of decoupling the roles of carbon textural and surface chemical properties. The insights to these specific roles are then used in tailor-making adsorbents and in establishing the optimal carbon properties for specific application. In this study, a series of activated carbons prepared from bagasse by physical and chemical techniques and commercially available carbons were used in developing the models. These carbons were tested for the adsorption of thiourea-gold (I) chloride complexes. Thiourea is an important alternative gold lixiviant with the potential to address current ecological and safety concerns in the extraction of gold. A four-component model, which correlated the adsorption gold capacity to carbon textural and surface chemical properties, was proposed. The model fit was assessed using multi-linear regression and a partial F-test. This was followed by goodness of fit test achieved through r2, adjusted?r2 and mean square error (MSE) values. The results suggest the adsorption of the gold-thiourea complex is strongly influenced by the internal surface area and pH of the carbon. Tailor-made activated carbon from bagasse showed adsorption gold capacities of up to 198 mgAu/g adsorbent, demonstrating the potential of bagasse as a precursor for gold adsorbents and of this empirical modelling approach in developing adsorbents for metal recovery.

Eng.(Metallurgical Engineering) degree The interrelationship between mineral liberation and leaching behaviour of a gold ore is ill defined, mainly due to the complexity of both leaching and mineral liberation. This study presents a neural network approach to modelling the liberation of gold bearing ores. A complete mineralogical analysis of unmilled and milled ores, including gold deportment and gangue content are used as inputs to a self-organizing neural net, which generates order preserving topological maps. The arrangement and shapes of these clusters are coupled to unmilled free gold data to predict gold liberation in milled ores (absolute error: 8.1%). Moreover, the self-organizing maps were diagnostic of the quality of data used, indicating that the relationship between particle size and gangue material content requires further investigation.

BHP Billiton, in collaboration with Sodern and CSIRO, has developed a downhole logging tool for measuring geochemistry in situ. The FastGradeTM 100 (alternatively, FG100), exploits pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis (PFTNA) to analyse the rock. This method is based on the detection and measurement of characteristic gamma rays emitted from isotopes in the material that become briefly radioactive when they are bombarded with neutrons. The tool outputs raw spectra arising from three types of neutron interaction, namely, inelastic scattering, neutron capture and neutron activation, which occur in successive time-windows (Smith et al, 2015). The spectra contain peaks at specific energies that are characteristic of the different elements interacting with the neutrons, the gamma count of which is related to elemental concentration. BHP Billiton uses in-house data processing software to convert the measured spectra to elemental concentrations.Much work has been done to understand the tool response under a wide variety of environmental and operating conditions, including logging speed, borehole rugosity, the presence of cavities, water etc. Effort has also been directed at understanding and quantifying the current sources of error in our conventional assays due to sample collection, preparation, and laboratory instrumentation in order to use this information as a baseline to compare against the FastGradeTM 100 results.To date, the FastGradeTM 100 primary use has been as a verification tool (JORC, 2012). However, beyond this, it has considerable potential to improve productivity in both exploration and production environments due to its ability to provide geologists with assay results soon after a hole is drilled.This paper presents initial test work and tool performance, including accuracy and precision under various conditions. Massive landslides display complex deformation processes. For instance, slope movements of the Downie Slide, monitored using borehole inclinometers, extensometers, and survey monuments, show considerable spatial and temporal inconsistencies in the displacement rates. This study assesses the influence that inferred shear surface geometry, as a key factor contributing to variable slope movements, has on resolving spatially discriminated slope deformations in three-dimensions. Borehole data defines the shear surface location at discrete points within the slide and therefore, the shear surface geometry for the extent of the slide must be largely inferred. A series of three-dimensional numerical simulations have been run to assess the effect of different interpretations of the shear surface geometry. This investigation illustrates the importance of rigorous geospatial definition of slip surface geometry and the value of three dimensional modelling.

In-pit crusher location selection has had an important role recently, since increasing diesel prices. One way of reducing the haulage costs is to shorten the truck haulage distance by bringing the truck dump point into the pit. This study covers the work done on the optimum crusher location definition for a company that produces aggregate near Izmir, a city of Turkey located in the west. This paper will discuss the effects of pit geometry and mine access requirements on optimum crusher location selection that are mainly based on the establishment of minimum haulage distance. The method will be introduced first and then the computer algorithm developed for this study will be discussed later in the paper. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Hons) (Eng) (Mechanical) degree Discrete element methods (DEM) are being used to provide detailed impact histories of the particles in comminution devices, such as mills. To match this immense detail of information, far more informative breakage tests than those that are generally conducted are now required. The split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus is used in this study, as it allows the calculation of breakage forces and absorbed energies. The geometry of rock particles has been identified as significant, so this project undertook to identify the influence of shape on the breakage pattern of blue stone. Comparisons are then made between the breakage pattern of angular rocks and rounded, milled rocks for single impact fracture and consecutive impact loading at low energy. Results of this experiment indicate that although breakage for both geometries occurs over a similar energy range, rounded particles have the greater probability of fracture because they absorb more of the impact energy for a given loading. Size distributions of progeny show that five pebbles or more are sufficient to predict the distribution of most particles in small energy regimes. Cumulative impact testing shows that considerably more energy is required to break a rock through cumulative damage than through a single impact?this is of considerable importance in the light of the indications from DEM simulations that most breakage in a mill will be from cumulative damage rather than single impact breakage.

This paper presents an initial investigation into the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts in a two dimensional, thin reef scenario. Deposits with gradational mineralized zones, in the perpendicular sense, are not as well served by the use of reef accumulation and thickness as deposits characterized by a sharp distinction between ore and waste rock. South African Bushveld Complex platinum deposits and Witwatersrand gold deposits are examples of this distinction. The calculation of an optimal mining cut is of paramount importance in the mining of Bushveld platinum. Two-dimensional kriging of a constant stoping width mining cut is an effective method for resource calculations once a cut is decided, but this begs the question of how to decide on the cut. Comparison of multiple cuts is used as a way of achieving this decision on many of Anglo Platinum’s operations. Although the kriging of each cut is valid in isolation, occasional negative values occur when incremental grades between overlapping cuts are calculated. Negative incremental grades cannot reflect reality. They are thought to be related to the inability of the method to include the strong continuity in the perpendicular direction demonstrated by the relevant variograms. Co-kriging of related variables has been investigated as a potential means tore impose this inherent order relationship. Various co-kriging options have been investigated. The method has been tested on a real data set from an established platinum operation. One of three types of anomaly has been investigated so far. The results show that co-kriging the mining cut grade as the primary variable, with just one secondary variable, the reef thickness, eliminates most occurrences. Severe anomalies remaining are arguably indicative of population mixing and might be more effectively treated by rezoning the data. Aim—To investigate the viability of co-kriging the grades of multiple mining cuts as a method for resolving anomalies in the estimation of such cuts on Bushveld platinum deposits, with applicability to other thin reef type deposits with a gradational not sharp cut-off between ore and waste in the direction perpendicular to the reef. This study was conducted to determine the effects of a machine-mounted scrubber and water sprays on face methane levels. Testing was conducted in the NIOSH ventilation test gallery which was designed to simulate a full-scale mine entry. In the test entry, a model mining machine, equipped with water sprays and a simulated dust scrubber, was located at the face of a 20-ft box cut. Blowing ventilation was provided using a curtain with a 40-ft setback distance. Methane released from a pipe manifold located inby the mining machine was monitored at six locations that were 1 ft outby the pipe manifold. Tests were first conducted to evaluate the effects of using sprays and scrubber separately on face methane levels. Additional tests were conducted to determine how a scrubber used with various water spray systems would affect face methane levels. The use of either sprays or scrubber reduced face methane levels significantly. The combined use of sprays with the scrubber further reduced face methane levels a small amount. Primarily the sprays affected methane levels by changing airflow distribution close to the face.

"The Wabush Mines project was formed in 1956 to develop a large iron ore property in Western Labrador. The town of Wabush along with the mining and concentrating facilities are located 640 air miles from Montreal, and 734 air miles from St. John's. The operation has been in production since late 1964.While mining and concentrating operations are located in Labrador, the pelletizing facilities are situated 275 miles south at Sept-Iles, Quebec. Dedicated in 1965, Wabush produces six million tons of high quality iron ore pellets annually. The company employs 1, 550 people at Wabush and the Pointe Noire plant at Sept-Iles.Wabush Mines is an unincorporated joint venture of three companies -The Steel Company of Canada, Dominion Foundries and Steel Ltd. and the remaining 58% by the Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. Wabush Iron Co. Ltd. is in turn owned by six companies: The Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company, Inland Steel Company, Interlake Inc., Wheeling Pittsburg Steel Company, Finsider International S.A. and Pickands Mather & Company which is also managing agent.The town of Wabush is set in a remote part of Northern Canada accessible only by rail and air transportation. But this in no way has hindered the growth and development of the area. Modern housing units, shopping facilities, airport and of course, recreational facilities are all patt of every day living amenities, an accepted aprt of southern communities, but quite unique for northern isolated mining localities."

"Over the last six years, the Kansanshi copper/gold mine has continued to process significant quantities of complex transitional mixed ores. The effect of the complex mineralogy on the flotation performance is depicted. Initially, ore treated came predominantly from accumulated stockpiles. In the ensuing years, ore treated shifted to primarily freshly mined ore that generally showed less tarnish with better float kinetics but with the downside of producing lower concentrate grades. A number of changes were made to improve the efficiency of the roughing circuit and quality of concentrate produced. These changes were as a result of initial mineralogical studies and laboratory float test work done and discussed at length in a previous paper. Salient among the adopted recommendations from previous work were increasing circuit capacity and modifying configuration to increase the residence time and the number of sulphidisation stages. These modifications were completed and commissioned in 2011. This, however, resulted in significantly low rougher concentrate grades and subsequently below-specification final concentrate product. This was primarily due to higher mass pulls resulting from the extended rougher bank with multiple concentrate discharge streams. This necessitated the need for an enlarged cleaning capability to offset this. The extra cleaning capacity came on-stream in 2014. Of note was the development of a recovery model, based on the strong correlation between the total copper and acid-soluble copper ratio, as a tool for monitoring plant performance. INTRODUCTION The Kansanshi mine, the largest copper mine in Africa, is 80% owned by Kansanshi Mining PLC, a First Quantum subsidiary. The remaining 20% is owned by the state through the parastatal ZCCM. The mine is located approximately 10 km north of the town of Solwezi and 180 km to the northwest of the Copperbelt town of Chingola. The mine has been in commercial operation since 2005. Prior to June 2009, Kansanshi mine treated only two ore types: oxide and sulphide. All transitional ores mined during the period leading up to 2009 were stockpiled. The treatment of the minerologically complex, transitional ores through a third train commenced in June 2009 but with numerous metallurgical challenges. This transitional ore (called mixed ores) could not be previously treated economically due to high gangue acid consumption (GAC) minerals association (making it unsuitable for the oxide float–leach circuit) and poor flotation response ruling out the conventional sulphide float circuit. The new novel circuit involved a conventional sulphide pre-float followed by flotation involving staged controlled potential sulphidisation (CPS)."

Batches of red or brown iron ore concentrates, weighing 100 or 200 grams, were reduced with gaseous reductants in a laboratory-sized fluidized-bed reactor. Using a loss of weight technique, the rates of reduction were measured and the effects of temperature, gas consumption, and gas flow rates were determined. Below about 725° C the rate of reduction was controlled by the chemical reaction at the reduction interface having an activation energy of about 10 kcal/g mole. Above about 725° C the rate of reduction appeared to be controlled by the flow of the gaseous reductant and therefore to be directly proportional to the flow rate. Above 725° C, hydrogen reduced the iron ore much faster than carbon monoxide. In gas mixtures, carbon monoxide or nitrogen reduced the hydrogen partial pressure and lowered the reaction rate proportionally. When present in large concentrations, carbon monoxide had a serious inhibiting effect on the reduction rate, probably owing to carburization and sintering of the reduced iron.

Seepage forces generated during tunnel excavation affect the ground response and may cause severe instability problems, including total ground collapse and flooding into the tunnel. This paper presents a new closed-form analytical solution, for stresses and displacements around a cylindrical tunnel excavated in a porous water-bearing elasto-plastic material, which includes the effects of seepage forces. The analysis is carried out in terms of effective stresses and pore water pressures. The solution shows that seepage forces may have a major effect on the effective stresses around the tunnel, on the extent of the plastic zone, on the radial displacements, and on the tunnel support requirements. The conditions for development of a ?flowing ground? condition at the tunnel face have been identified. The paper presents a procedure for the hydromechanical ground-support interaction analysis, to determine the excavation induced inflow and the pressures acting on the lining, throughout the progressive driving of the tunnel, including the effective pressures exerted by the ground and the pressures generated by the water.

In Japan, a cartridged emulsion explosive is generally used for tunneling. The workers are compelled to approach the face on charging the explosives into the drill hole with the tamping rod. Therefore, the workers are exposed to the risk of the disaster with the cave-in and the falling rock. The mechanization of the tunnel work has been advancing gradually. Especially, the development of the mechanization for charging work is desired in order to avoid the risk of disaster on workers. Recently, some charging machines such as the bulk emulsion explosives have been evaluated. However, a universal method has not been established yet, because the evaluated machines were not adequately suited from the point of the regulations and the consumption style of explosives.

Mintek and BacTech have joined forces to provide the metallurgical industry with bacterial-oxidation processes for the treatment of sulphide ores. The processes are aimed at both refractory gold-bearing and base-metal concentrates. Previously, BacTech had commercially implemented the refractory gold process at the Youanmi Gold Mine in Western Australia. More recently, the process has been incorporated in the Sulphide Treatment Plant at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in Tasmania, Australia. In addition, Mintek and BacTech have recently signed an agreement with the Laizhou Gold Metallurgy Plant in China?s Shandong Province, which will see the third commercial realization of the technology for refractory gold. Development of the base-metal technology is the subject of several papers in the proceedings of this colloquium. The implementation of the refractory gold technology at Beaconsfield is discussed in detail. Some important aspects that are covered include: ?Test work, and the choice of bacterial culture ?Process design choices, and the advantages of the Mintek-BacTech process ?Inoculum build-up ?Plant commissioning ?Plant performance. Besides the Laizhou project, Mintek and BacTech are currently investigating several other commercial prospects for the technology. These include the use of the technology for a gold-copper deposit, where the production of both gold and copper is envisaged.

"The recovery of gold by leaching is influenced by the size of the gold carrier particles and the chemical environment. Using the relationships between the leaching rate, infinite recovery and particle size for a given set of chemical conditions, it is possible to simulate gold recovery for various feed size distributions. However the use of these particle size relationships is only valid if the leaching of gold from a given size class is independent of the production history of this size class. For instance, to use these relationships it is necessary to verify that gold recovery from the leaching of the 200-270 mesh size class remains the same if the size fraction is taken from a coarse or finely ground ore sample. Several laboratory tests were carried out to answer that question. Results of the tests show that within the large error margin associated to gold content measurements, the history of the production of a size class does not affect the gold leaching from that size class. Emphasis of the discussion is put on the difficulty associated with the processing of data containing significant measurement errors as it is the case for gold assays of leaching tests.INTRODUCTIONMore than 75% of the gold produced in the world is extracted by cyanide leaching of gold ores. The ore is ground to expose the gold carriers and the ground material is reacted in an oxygenated cyanide solution that dissolves gold, leaving solids gangue minerals that are disposed to tailings ponds or returned in underground mines as paste fill. The gold contained in the solution is recovered by either the carbon in pulp process or by cementation onto zinc powder, before being melted and casted into a brick (Marsden and House, 2006)."

Efficient prevention of mine fires is impossible without predicting the self heating processes in the given geological and mining conditions. The respective forecasting method is presented in this paper based on the following assumptions: - factor deciding on fire hazard in the underground workings is the process of heating of coal from the primary rock temperature to the critical temperature when the heating rate growth rapidly - another important factor is the fire incubation time defined as time needed to achieve the critical temperature. This time is determined by balance of heat and mass in the heated coal - contact of crushed coal with oxygen in air cause some exothermic processes as : physical and chemical sorption of oxygen , oxidation reaction and evaporation of humidity Heated coal transfers its thermal energy to the environment by conductivity to the rocks and by convection to the flowing gases. The heating is possible if thermal energy generated from coal is greater then the share transferred to the environment. The paper presents the laboratory method of measurement of heat generation in adiabatic conditions. Also the mathematical model with examples of computation enabling to forecast the self heating process of crushed coal is presented.

In March of 2013, an undisclosed gold mine (MINE X), located in the Western United States, performed blast movement monitoring of three blasts occurring in one of two active pits. Blast Movement Monitors (BMMs) were placed in the bench before blasting, and located after the blast to determine vectors of movement. Using blast movement software, ore/waste boundaries were translated. These locations were compared to MINE X’s standard ore translation procedure, which consisted of moving polygon boundaries by 17.5 feet (5.3 m) in the burden direction of the blast hole pattern. This translation amount, identified by MINE X as “average” motion, had been ascertained by performing a previous blast movement study.

Frother influences water recovery through control of bubble size and a chemical effect. De-coupling the two is necessary to establish the extent of the chemistry effect. A setup is described to give steady state water overflow rate (Jwo) along with measurements of bubble size into and on top of the froth. Arguing neither bubble size correlates directly with water overflow, a frother mass balance is solved to estimate the bubble surface area flux in the overflow (Sb0 ). The solution required measurement of frother concentration using TOC analysis and frother adsorption density using surface tension data. The relationship between Jwo and Sbo reveals the frother chemistry effect, quantified for discussion purposes by an equivalent water layer thickness.

One of the manifestations of the dynamically induced failures in deep coal mines is the violent ejection of coal from the ribs. A possible protection against such failures is the use of a specifically designed dynamic support system with reinforcement units having the sufficient capacity to absorb the kinetic energy of the dynamic failure and a skin support that can adequately contain the disintegrated coal. With this method of mitigation in mind, a recently introduced yielding rock bolt, trade name Roofex, has been identified (Harvey and Ozbay, 2009) as a possible energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. According to the manufacturer?s specification, the Roofex bolts can yield 300 mm (or more) displacement while holding 80 kN pull load. In order to assess the performance of this support unit in coal ribs, a series of in situ pull tests performed in two coal mines in Colorado. The results show that, under conventional pull test loading conditions, Roofex yielding bolts perform very close to their claimed specifications, thus showing a potential for their use as the main energy absorbing component of a dynamic support system. Further studies are required to confirm the in situ performance of these bolts under dynamic loading conditions and also to develop a containment component for a dynamic support system for the mitigation of dynamic coal rib failures.
