General Description Due to the extreme cold weather experienced in Flin Flon during the winter months, thought and precaution were necessary in the design of the plant buildings. The machine shop, carpenter shop, drill shop, and coal plant buildings are similar in the building materials used in their construction. They are sided with two-inch shiplap, insulated with celotex and asbestos paper, and covered with corrugated iron on all side-walls. Roofing consists of 2 by 4 lumber on edge, laminated, and further covered by celotex and three-ply roofing. These buildings are heated by means of unit heaters. The heaters are primarily steam-heated radiators, through which the air of the buildings is circulated by electrically-driven fans. Our machine shop is located to the east of, but central to, the main operating buildings of the mine and plant, and is so connected by a net work of tracks as to be able to serve all portions of the entire plant conveniently. The building is divided into two bays, the main bay 53 ft. by 340 ft., and the east bay 24 ft. by 340 ft. The shop office and drafting room, a two-story annex 24 ft. by 30 ft., is located on the west side of the shop. The arrangement within the shop is such as to house conveniently the several departments, namely, heavy machine tool section, repair floor section, boiler shop heavy tool and floor section, blacksmith heavy tool and forge section, tool room, electric welding rooms, stock room, tin and copper shop, and electrical parts and armature winding and repair shop (see Figure 1). All the heavy tools, the repair floor section, and railway tracks are so located in the large open bay as to be fully serviced by an electrically operated 15-ton bridge crane, with a span of 50 feet and a travel the full length of the shop. A standard-gauge railway track, branched off the main line, penetrates the full depth of the building. This track lies along the extreme east side of the main bay, allowing easy entrance and movement of rolling stock and heavy machinery, loaded on standard flat-cars, to the repair floors in the main bay. Eight jib cranes, affixed to building columns, further facilitate the heavy repair work throughout the various shop divisions. Our light and heavy machine tools are standard equipment, not unlike tools used in mine, mill, and railway shops.

O movimento do fluido no interior do molde durante o processo de lingotamento contínuo possui grande impacto na qualidade do produto fabricado, pois influencia os mecanismos de formação da casca solidificada, flotação de inclusões e lubrificação da pele. A geometria complexa dos moldes de Beam Blank dificulta a garantia de fluxos térmicos simétricos, o que resulta em variação na espessura da pele; daí a importância de se estudar os parâmetros que interferem no fluxo do fluido no interior do molde. Neste trabalho verificou-se a influência da velocidade de lingotamento e do diâmetro de válvulas submersas do tipo tubulares sobre o fluxo no interior do molde. A análise do campo vetorial de velocidades revelou a existência de seis vórtices, dois na região da alma e dois em cada flange do molde. Além disso, foi encontrado que o aumento de 100L/min a 150L/min a profundidade do jato sobe de 0,74m para 0,84m, enquanto que um aumento de 67% na área de seção transversal das válvulas tubulares não promove diminuição significativa desta profundidade.

Repeated exposure to hand-arm vibration through the use of vibrating hand tools can result in the development of the disorder known as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS; (1,3)). One of the hallmark symptoms of HAVS is cold-induced peripheral vasospasms that result in finger blanching (4). Although the vascular and neural pathology associated with vasospasms has been described, little is known about cellular mechanisms leading to this damage (4). To understand how vibration may alter vascular and neural physiology and anatomy, rats were exposed to a single bout of tail vibration and the molecular responses of neural and vascular tissues were measured to determine if there are immediate or sustained affects of vibration that may underlie longer term changes in physiology. Methods Experiment 1. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 32, 6 weeks of age) were housed in AAALAC accredited facilities. All procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee and were in compliance with the CDC guidelines for care and use of laboratory animals. Vibration exposures were performed by restraining rats in Broome-style restrainers, and securing their tails to a vibration platform using 6 mm wide straps that were placed over the tail every 3 cm. Restraint control rats were treated in the same manner, except that the tail platform was mounted on isolation blocks and not on a shaker. The vibration exposure was 125 Hz, 49 m/s2, for 4 h. Rats were euthanized with an overdose of pentobarbital (100 mg/kg) 1 h or 24 hours after the exposure. RTqPCR was used to measure transcript levels for endothelin 1 (ET-1), the 3 forms of nitric oxide synthetase (NOS) NOS-1, NOS-2, NOS-3 and norepinephrine receptor subtypes 1D, 2A, 2C, in artery tissue, and to measure calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and nitric oxide synthase-1 (NOS-1) in ventral nerves. Data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVAs. Experiment 2. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n =24, 6 weeks of age) were maintained as described above. Animals were exposed to a single bout of restraint or vibration. Another group of animals served as cage controls. All animals were euthanized 24 h after the exposure, and tail arteries were isolated and frozen. Reactive oxygen species ROS) were measured using electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). Arteries were homogenized over ice in 1 ml of PBS with protease inhibitor cocktail, using a tissue tearer (Biospecs Products Inc. Racine, WI USA). The sample was split into two 0.5 ml samples. One set had PBS and the spin label hydroxyl-TEMPO [0.1 mM] added while the other set had hydroxyl-TEMPO [1.0 mM] plus the specific hydroxyl radical scavenger, dimethylthiourea (DMTU), added to confirm the presence of the hydroxyl radical. Samples were vortexed and then placed in a flat cell for ESR analysis. The ESR spectrometer settings were: receiver gain, 6.32 x 102; time constant, 0.02 s; modulation amplitude, 1.0 G; scan time, 20 sec; magnetic field, 3490 ± 100 G (2). Data were analyzed using 1-way ANOVAs.

"Description and UseDischarge liners or pulp lifters as they are sometimes called are a trough type liner used at the discharge end of the mill where ground ore passes to the trunnion.There are basically two methods of discharging pulp. The First and most common is the overflow method. Here ground ore travels from the feed to the discharge end where it exits through the discharge trunnion in an overflowing manner, hence the name ""overflow"". (See Figure I) The second method of discharging pulp is the grate method. With this method you block-off the trunnion and hold the ore inside the mill for a longer period of time. This allows only the desired size of ore out of the mill. Ore passes through the grate liners, into the Vibrathane Discharge liner, and finally down to the trunnion. Greater control of the ore size results wit1 this method as compared to the overflow method and it also eliminates reclassifying and regrinding. The Unit of Toxicological Risk Assessment of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) is conducting a 'Health Risk Assessment for Metallic Chromium and Trivalent Chromium' under the sponsorship of the International Chromium Development Association (ICDA) and the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF). This risk assessment will be conducted in accordance with the current European Union legislation in force (Council Regulation 793/93/EEC, Commission Regulation 1488/94/EEC, Dir. 67/548/EEC), but also to meet the regulatory obligations as set out in the European Commission REACH legislation proposal (Consultation Document, the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restrictions of CHemicals). Further aims include outlining the criteria for the setting of occupational exposure limits for metallic chromium and trivalent chromium compounds. Human Health Risk Assessment according to the current legislation shall entail hazard identification of the toxic end points (acute toxicity, irritation/corrosivity, sensitisation, repeated dose toxicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity) including, as appropriate, dose (concentration) - response assessment, and derivation of the N(L)OAELs (No (Lowest) Observed Adverse Effect Level) and/or DNELs (Derived No Effect Level). Exposure assessments for workers, consumers and humans exposed via the environment take into account all the known intended uses. Risk characterisation will compare the typical and/or reasonable worst case exposure estimates to the N(L)OAELs or DNELs to determine Margins of Safety (MOS) for all human populations by each exposure scenario and type of effect, followed by conclusions about the presence or absence of risk. Although all of the key elements of existing legislation remain in REACH, the principal change is that, the burden of proof will be transferred from the member state authorities to industry. The new proposed format of Chemical Safety Report (CSR) will include Risk Management Measures (RMM) as an essential part of the report in addition to the risk assessment. The RMM plays a role in the evaluation of further testing needs and advocating reasons for possible waiwer of requirements. The research programme started in March 2002 and will be completed within the time frame of two years.

Intensive process and technology improvements related to the BOF converter — the key process to increase steel plant productivity and stability — have been performed at Ternium Brazil. This paper details the road map for process developments and investments in equipment technology, as well as the results achieved. The main topics of this development are the process control and optimization systems, slag forming model, oxygen blowing pattern, end-of-blow point control and slag carryover control. The outcomes of this development are improvements in the reblow rate, end-of-blow oxidation, direct tapping, slag carryover, slopping ratio, metallic yield and lining life.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Michigan Technological University (MTU) are collaborating to develop an apparatus for measuring diesel tailpipe emissions in underground mines. A tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) is described that dilutes diesel exhaust and measures the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), CO, CO2, NO, and NO2 at known dilution ratios. The EMA was evaluated by side-by-side comparison of its measurements with those by laboratory-grade instruments. Concentrations of CO and CO2 measured by the EMA were usually within ± 14 pct of concentrations measured by laboratory-grade instruments for CO and ±20 pct for CO2. EMA¬ measured DPM concentrations were, on average, 29 pct lower than those measured by laboratory-grade instruments, with the differences being fairly consistent. The CO and CO2 differences are related to the method of calculating the EMA's dilution ratio, and the difference in DPM concentrations is attributed to thermophoretic and/or condensation losses related to the EMA's unheated sample probe. Preliminary analysis of data obtained with a heated sampling probe and modifications in the sampling procedures have indicated reduced variability in DPM and in the calculated dilution ratios.

"Sustainable development in the mining and metallurgical industrial sectors can be implemented by two distinct groups: the managers and operators of existing facilities, working with industrial processes and systems that have been operating for many years, in some cases, several decades; and those who are engineering and building new facilities or upgrades of existing plants.The focus of this paper is to look at approaches and tools available to bring sustainable development thinking and action to these two distinct areas. The paper will discuss the concept of working with existing facilities and processes to minimize waste and maximize product from a regional raw material/resource consumption perspective using by-product synergy. The BPS concept has been carried out in Texas (e.g., TXI-Chaparral’s STAR), in Calgary, Alberta, with Suncor assistance, in Montreal, Quebec, with Noranda as project leader, and currently in Ontario with Dofasco as industry champion. Successful outcomes are presented. The paper will also discuss a new approach to designing greenfield facilities or upgrades to existing plants using a sustainable development review process. Undertaking the review early in every project can institutionalize the concept of discussing and implementing waste elimination, design for environment, ecoefficiency, risk minimization and community awareness and involvement in the future capital stock. The review process has been developed as an excellent tool for measuring and reporting on a corporation’s sustainable development progress. Examples of how this approach has been adopted in the mining and metallurgical industry, and the resultant outcomes are given."

The Group Equivalent Pile (GEP) approach was proposed by researchers to analyze a laterally loaded pile group. This approach enables engineers to evaluate the behavior of a pile group in single pile analysis software, such as LPILE. A previous study showed that the calculated results using the GEP approach for piles agreed well with field test data. To evaluate the accuracy of the GEP method for analyzing laterally loaded shafts, two case studies with different shaft diameters were performed in this study. The comparisons showed that the calculated results using the GEP method and considering the contribution of the shaft cap if embedded generally agreed with the measured from the full-scale tests.

As the theme of the conference is ære-discover Otago' from the minerals point of view, it is also timely. Of the eight million ounces of gold recorded produced from Otago, perhaps a quarter of this came from the goldfields of St Bathans, Vinegar Hill and Cambrians. The most notable among them was the Kildare Hill Mine, which is the so-called Blue Lake at St Bathans today. The bottom wash encountered in this mine contained the famous Kildare lead, which averaged 7 1/2 dwt to the dish, and is still one of the richest leads of alluvial gold known in the world. The richness of this lead, the best encountered in these gold fields, is otherwise stated to have yielded more than 42 ounces of gold to the cubic yard. It should be borne in mind that this equates to about $22 000 per cubic metre, in todayÆs values. I have been told by older residents of this district that in fact about 1 million ounces came out of the Kildare mine and associated workings. In todayÆs values, this would be about 530 million dollars worth of gold. The largest mines in the district were at Surface Hill, Kildare Hill, Nicholsons, Vinegar Hill, the Never Fail claim at Shepherds Flat nearby, and at Cambrians. It would appear that in almost every case, work stopped when the bottom wash progressed too deep down dip of the anticline hills on which it was initially found. The mining methods were sluicing and hydraulic elevating, and although the gold bearing ground did not stop, eventually it exceeded the ability of the mining methods then available years ago, to work it further. When it is realised that the previous mining has removed what is likely to be only a low percentage of the gold resources in these fields, a tantalising situation presents itself today in that mining technology now available will enable another cut to be taken off these fields. As in the past, I believe this will be million ounce plus and multi-million dollar scenarios, where the economic and social benefits will become widespread prizes.

The zinc recycling is assuming more and more importance. A lot of zinc secondaries and wastes are ready to be collected and converted to zinc metal. The impurities present in these materials and the technical and economical problems that some traditional ways of treating these materials are facing, call for new technologies. The EZINEX Process, a fully hydrometallurgical process industrially proven to convert oxidised zinc bearing materials directly to zinc cathodes, is an innovative process that can deal with any kind of zinc waste/secondaries in a very powerful way. In this paper the highlights of this process will be shown and discussed to demonstrate the robustness of the process and its economic viability.

The final 26 tables of this chapter, tables 24-49, extend and expand the statistical series on production that was started in the 1963 edition of the Area Reports: International volume of the Minerals Yearbook and that was subsequently updated and expanded in the 1965 and 1967-90 editions. Mainly because of the separation of the countries that formed the U.S.S.R., the column that provided a 5-year average, was deleted. The listing order of major producers, however, continued to be, as in past years, in descending order of rank in the year of review, 1992. This group of tables now includes each of the top 19 crude minerals in 1983 in terms of value of their output plus 3 others of lesser rank. These 22 crude mineral commodities accounted for more than 98 % of the estimated value of world crude mineral production in 1983. Coal production, included in the 1983 value of production table as two separated entries, is combined in one table in this chapter. World output of five key downstream products-aluminum, steel, cement, nitrogen in ammonia, and refined oil-is included because of their significance as products.

The concept of isokinetic measurement of strength was originally related by Hislop and Perrine.(1)Characteristics of an isokinetic exertion are constant velocity throughout a predetermined range of motion. Strictly speaking, a means of speed control, and not a load in the usual sense, is applied in isokinetic exertions.(1)However, load and resistance are definitely present in this technique. In this case, the load is a result of the energy absorption process performed by the device to keep the exertion speed constant. The device prevents energy from being dissipated through acceleration in isokinetic exercise. The energy is instead converted into a resistive force, which varies in relation to the efficiency of the skeletal muscle. Since the speed of motion is held constant in isokinetic exercise, the resistance experienced during a contraction is equivalent to the force applied throughout the range of motion. For this reason, the technique of isokinetic exercise has sometimes been referred to as accommodating resistance exercise. This type of exercise allows the muscle to contract at its maximum capability a tall points throughout the range of motion. At the extremes of the range of motion of a joint, the muscle has the least mechanical advantage, and the resistance offered by the machine is correspondingly lower. Similarly, as the muscle reaches its optimal mechanical advantage, the resistance of the machine increases proportionally. It must be understood, however, that while isokinetic devices control the speed of the exertion, this does not assure a constant speed of muscle contraction. The speed of isokinetic contractions is constant during individual exertions; however, it is also possible to compare muscular performance over a wide range of isokinetic velocities. Increasing the isokinetic speed of contraction will place increasing demands on Type II muscle fibers (fast twitch and fast oxidative glycolytic). Workplace Assessment It is clear that isometric strength testing cannot substitute for dynamic strength assessment when examining highly dynamic occupational job demands. As most industrial work tasks contain a significant dynamic component, analysis of isokinetic strength capabilities appears to offer some advantage to isometric testing in this regard. However, it must be recognized that isokinetic devices are not entirely realistic compared with free dynamic lifting in which subjects may use rapid acceleration to gain a weight-lifting advantage.

Mining at Waihi on the Martha Hill commenced in 1878 and between 1892 and 1953 produced 35 million ounces of bullion from some 13.5 million short tons of ore from 40 named quartz reefs. The general geology of the ore is recorded in detail with differing interpretations by Bell and Fraser (1912) and Morgan (1924). The reefs and stringers have formed by fissure filling and replacement in mainly quartz andesite dacite flows within the Waihi 'Graben'. The host rocks are extensively propylitised with intense alteration forming zones of kaolin adjacent to the main reefs.

"This preliminary paper provides a summary of lab and mill flotation investigations into the copper collector at two Canadian operations. The orebodies illustrated in these studies both contain mainly copper and zinc with uneconomic quantities of lead. Silver is also present as a secondary precious metal.Each mill has advanced to the extended mill trial stage with Uniflot SP129 as the sole copper collector. The preliminary metallurgical results have indicated higher copper circuit zinc and lead rejection is possible as shown in Case Study #2. In Case Study #1, improved zinc circuit metallurgy has been realized during all the Uniflot copper circuit collector trials. A slight increase in silver recovery has also been observed in the extended trials at both operations. INTRODUCTIONThe Canadian base metal industry is presently going through a rationalization period in response to low metal prices and low grade ore bodies. The response from flotation mills has been to reduce costs by incorporating new technologies such as energy efficient large cells, low moisture pressure filters and low steel consumption SAG mills. Other optimization strategies have been incorporated to get better metallurgical performance such as improved process control and monitoring techniques.The newer flotation plants have embraced many of the latest equipment innovations but they continue to incorporate off-the shelf reagents like xanthate and methylisobutylcarbinol (MIBC) . New collector chemistries have been mostly unsuccessful. Our approach incorporates the best of the old and new chemistry into proprietary formulations that match the application. We have found most single chemical formulations cannot meet the demands of the optimized modern flotation plant."

Thallium is one of the rare and relatively neglected elements that has recently assumed conspicuous importance. This element is widely distributed in nature but occurs in such minute quantities in most rocks and minerals that its recovery at present is only commercially feasible as a byproduct of other industries. World War II, with its unprecedented demand for products having special or unusual properties, led to a study of a number of the rarer elements that previously had been given comparatively little attention for one or more of the following reasons: 1. 2. Limited knowledge of properties. Small quantitios present in available raw materials. 3. High cost of concentration and recovery. Some of those rare elements, either alone or in the form of compounds, have already proved of such value for certain military and industrial purposes that their extraction from ores and waste products, oven at high cost, is fully justified. On the othor hand, further investigation of their character- istics, discovery of more adequato sources, and improvement in methods of con- centration and recovery would greatly broaden their field of usefulness and establish new and expanded industries. The current market for some of these elements exceeds the available supply. One of the functions of the Bureau of Mines is to study the properties of such elements in greater detail, locate the most promising raw materials from which they can be derived, and work out methods of extraction that will render the recovery of such elements more economical. The purpose of a serios of information circulars on the raror elements is to present in condensed form the facts and data so far available. This information may serve as a basis in planning more complete investigations loading to a full utilization of such elements.

Changes in the 1980 quantity and value of the sales of various natural abrasives, compared with the data for 1979, were of a mixed nature. Output of garnet and special silica stone products increased in both tonnage and value during the year, while emery and tripoli-type materials production decreased in both tonnage and value. The reported quantity and value of sales of manufactured abrasive material-fused alumina and alumina-zirconia, silicon car-bidet and metallic iron and steel shot and grit-also decreased for 1980. "A computer model has been developed to predict grain structures in alloys solidified under unidirectional flow using a combination of three techniques -- solution of the equations for flow of an incompressible fluid bounded by curved surfaces by the SOLA-SURF algorithm, calculation of heat flow by a finite difference method, and simulation of grain formation by a two-dimensional cellular automaton (CA) model. The changing rigid surface has been taken into account. Heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation are considered, and the growth kinetics of a dendrite tip are evaluated by the Kurz-Giovanola-Trivedi (KGT) model. These calculations were applied to solidification of an Al-4.5% Cu alloy flowing over a chill on the bottom of a channel, a system for which experimental results were available. Using a variety of flow rates and superheats, agreement between the computed and experimental results were very good including transitions between columnar and equiaxed grains, the aspect ratio of the grains, and the inclination of the grains to the flow.IntroductionModeling of casting and solidification processes has developed over the years along two distinct tracks: (1.) modeling of macroscopic heat transfer and fluid flow for design purposes, and (2.) modeling of microscopic processes such as nucleation and growth in order to improve the scientific understanding of the phenomena involved. The present work is an attempt to combine the macroscopic and microscopic approaches for the solidification of an alloy flowing over a chill. The specific case chosen is that of an aluminum-4.5 % copper alloy flowing linearly over a water-cooled copper chill for which experimental results were available over a range of flow rates and superheats. For the macroscopic calculations, the SOLA-SURF algorithm for solution of the twodimensional fluid flow equations was combined with the finite difference method (FDM) for calculating heat transfer. For the microscopic calculations, heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation were considered, and the growth kinetics at the dendrite tips were evaluated. The cellular automaton (CA) technique was used to apply the microscopic kinetics to the temperature and .flow conditions."
