Introduction Gunite is a mixture of sand and cement applied to any surface by being shot by compressed air through a nozzle, where it is wetted just before leaving the orifice. The mixture is transported through a hose from a machine called a 'cement-gun'(l). Guniting of rock surfaces has been standard practice at the Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, for several years. Where used on walls and backs of cross-cuts; shaft stations, and other rock openings, as an air seal, gunite has eliminated the necessity of constant scaling to keep rock from falling from these places, and, under worse conditions, it has been used in place of timber supports. This has been of definite help in reducing costs, promoting safety, and minimizing fire hazards. During the past year guniting has been quite extensively used here in the rock head-works of the new internal shaft, No. 12, sunk from the 3,875-foot level. Gunite is at present being applied to the stations of that shaft well below a mile from the surface. This paper describes the method of guniting as carried out at the McIntyre, and illustrates how, by the adoption of this process, mining problems connected with scaling and loose ground have been completely solved. It is hoped that the information presented may stimulate discussion and assist in the use of gunite in this and other mines. The guniting method of applying cement was first developed by Carl E. Akeley (2), Curator of the Field Museum, Chicago, in 1907, and was exhibited in New York at the Cement Show in 1910. The museum was located in one of the old World's Fair buildings, built of roughcast and in bad repair. Mr. Akeley, who was a man of inventive nature, set about devising means of applying cement to repair the walls. The cement-gun was the result. Mr. Akeley was a taxidermist of note, a sculptor, and also the inventor of the Akeley camera. In his work, he was in the habit of using fast setting materials to build up foundations for statues, etc.

Area mining is a surface mining method that allows for efficient mining and contemporaneous reclamation of tabular or bedded deposits, e.g., coal. Mine planning methods for area mines differ from those of open pit metal mines. Area mines in the Powder River Basin (PRB) use various processes for mine planning at both the strategic and tactical stages. With the ever changing commodity markets, it is becoming increasingly important for mine operators to be able to react quickly to the changing business environment. Tools that allow for the development and rapid comparison of production schedule scenarios are key to ensuring agile mine operations. A survey of mine engineers responsible for mine design and production scheduling at coal operations provides clarity on the current mine design and production scheduling processes in the PRB, as well as a discussion on potential solutions to upcoming challenges. In this article, we describe various mine planning processes used by the coal producers in the Powder River Basin. The survey identifies a clear gap in the ability to create comprehensive schedules associated with limited tools and lack of engineering labor needed to frequently conduct the mine design and scheduling process.

Gold ores containing antimony suffer from poor recoveries of gold in cyanidation due to the impact of antimony on the cyanidation process. Techniques such as lowering the pH for cyanidation can improve gold recovery, nevertheless a limit can be reached where high cyanide consumption makes traditional processing uneconomic. The paper outlines a process for the pre-treatment of gold-antimony concentrates to remove the antimony resulting in a low-antimony content gold-bearing residue suitable for efficient treatment for gold recovery through cyanidation. This hydrometallurgical process produces a by-product credit of commercial grade antimony trioxide as Senarmontite that can significantly offset the cost of the pre-treatment.

The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2004 was estimated to be 635 kt (700,000 st). This was a 2-percent increase from 2003. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $164 million in 2004. Production was from six companies with 13 processing facilities in four states. Nevada and California were the principal producing states. They accounted for about78 percent of the U.S. production during 2004. U.S. diatomite exports were about 136 kt (150,000 st). Imports were negligible.

While not a new construction technique "top/down" construction is seeing increased use in high rise building construction. Using diaphragm wall, drilled shaft and mining construction techniques, top/down construction enables construction of both the below grade basements and high rise structure simultaneously. To date the top/down method has been used on at least four major building projects in the United States. This paper will review the economic, engineering, construction and schedule issues associated with top/down technology on two projects -Olympia Centre, Chicago, and One Westwood, Los Angeles. Top/Down construction is currently under consideration on several additional projects in the United States.

The underground ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant provides unparalleled ability to ensure safety of the workers, public and environment. Although small spatially, it can vary the airflow from 66,000 acfm to 460,000 acfm. It can automatically incorporate HEPA filtration in the event of radioactive contamination. Remote-capable regulators individually control the four main splits, and can be adjusted from the surface if necessary. A ventilation remote monitoring and control system provides real-time information. Future areas of concern include DPM compliance, system psychrometry, logic-based-real-time mine ventilation simulation and automation using PLC technology. This paper discusses the evolution of this system.

"The aluminum industry is the 5th largest consumer of energy and the largest consumer of energy on a per-weight basis. Process heating accounts for 25% of the energy consumed to manufacture aluminum. Consequently, the generation of this energy results in the production of a significant amount of CO2 (over 3.75 million metric tons in 2003)1. As a result, the Aluminum Industry Technology Roadmap of 2003 listed the development of improved refractory materials as a goal to reduce energy use and decrease greenhouse gas creation. The result of a R&D effort addressing this desire is the development of patented microporous refractory materials for metal contact applications in all furnace areas including the belly band. It has been demonstrated that this material can reduce energy consumption up to 38% in furnaces and significantly reduce heat loss in launder and trough systems. Furthermore the material developed is non-wetting and remains un-penetrated by metal throughout its lifetime. The material does not contribute to the formation of corundum. As a result, the energy efficiency of an older lining remains intact compared to standard refractory materials which may have an initial high insulating value (such as lightweights and board) or standard dense refractory (even with penetration inhibitors) both of which show a rapid increase in thermal conductivity as the refractory is penetrated with aluminum and formed corundumIntroductionThe aluminum industry is the second largest producer of metal in the United States, behind the iron and steel industry. It is the 5th largest consumer of energy and the largest consumer of energy on a per-weight basis. Process heating is required to melt, hold, purify, alloy, and heat treat the metal and accounts for 25% of the energy consumed to manufacture aluminum. As such, process heating is the second largest energy consuming operation. Smelting, which utilizes an electrolytic reduction process is the largest energy consuming operation1.Most process heating is accomplished through the use of fossil fuels, either directly or indirectly. The choice of fuel is dependent on a plant’s location and fossil fuel availability. Table I shows the processes impacted by refractories and the calculated BTU’s generated by usage of the respective fuels as well as the Metric Tons (MT) of metal passed through each process in 20001."

Full-face tunnelling machines were introduced into German coal mines 12 years ago. It was aimed to utilize these highly efficient systems to drive mine tunnels in rock so that the large demand for development work in some mines could be met. A characteristic feature of coal deposits in Germany - and particularly in the Ruhr Area - is a thick overburden strata. Access is therefore only possible through vertical shafts. A network of horizontal drivages leading from these shafts open the deposits between the different mine levels. The hardcoal-bearing formations are multi-folded and heavily tectonically stressed. Apart from a few extensive fault zones there are many single faults of different natures in the carboniferous strata. During the course of decades coal mining has penetrated to ever increasing depths. Nowadays coal is mined from depths of between 600 m and 1,200 m. The effects of ground pressure in connection with extremely varying rock strengths and high temperatures are particular difficulties which have to be overcome during drivage work. The first full-face tunnelling machines to be applied in the mines had originally bee deigned and developed for tunnelling projects. Not only the machines themselves, but also the back-up equipment had to be adapted to meet the special demands of German coal mines.

This report describes a field-test program to determine the effectiveness of a polymeric wall sealant to reduce the excape of naturally occurring radio-active gas radon from the walls of an underground uranium mine into the ventilation air. A 75-foot-long, dead-end drift with a surface area of about 6,000 ft2 was used as the test site in which the average natural radon flux from the normally dry rock was 16 fCi/cm2-s. The effect on radon emanation of wetting the walls with water to a depth of 3 inches was tested, after which the rock was completely covered with a coating of dry-mix concrete to provide a base for the sealant, an acrylic latex. Sealant was applied in two coats to about 0.25 mm thick. An overall reduction of average radon flux of about 75 pct was achieved. Radon production and other environmental values were measured continuously and automatically by a Bureau of Mines data acquisition system. A commercial microcomputer was programed to convert raw data to engineering units and to perform other useful operations while recording all data on magnetic diskettes. Direct measurements of radon flux from the rock surface were made by a charcoal adsorption technique.

Coal-haul and mine access roads are defined as any road constructed, improved or used by the operator (except public roads) that ends at the pit or bench. These roads constitute approximately 10% of the total area directly disturbed by the surface mining operation(l). In some cases, the land disturbed by haul roads exceeds the area included in the mining operation. Studies (2 and 3) of the U. S. Forest Service in eastern Kentucky show that typical contour mining roads exhibit poor alignment, excessive grades, insufficient strength and durability, and poor drainage. Mine roads in other Appalachian- States, particularly where contour mining is practiced, appear much the same as those in Kentucky. Access roads(4) were also found to be a large source of sediment. It is possible that of the sediment that finds its way into the streams as much (or even more) originates from the haul roads as from the mining operation. Most roads are built as cheaply as possible, and good road-building design and practice are ignored. Maintenance schedules are generally inadequate, and upon completion of mining, haul roads are usually abandoned, with little or no attempt made to bed them down(5 ) . Such roads deteriorate very rapidly (Figure 68). Area mining, which is practiced in flat to gently rolling terrain, presents fewer haul road related environmental problems. These roads through necessity are generally well engineered because of the heavy equipment using them, such as 240 ton (217 metric ton) haul trucks. They must have wide beds, good alignment, and adequate drainage to permit coal haulers to run at top speed during all seasons of the year. Excessive dust can be a public nuisance and a driving hazard, and it is hard on equipment. Calcium chloride and sodium chloride have proven to be effective materials for controlling dust. Two applications during the summer when the ground surface is moist at the rate of 1/2 pound per square yard (.26 kilograms per square meter) (3 1 have been suggested. Th4 most common procedure is to keep the roads wet by using water trucks. Sediment that reaches the streams can be traced to one or more of the following five basic phases of haul-road life:

Removing the ledge formation in the Hall-Heroult cell during the electrolysis process may significantly reduce the energy requirement of the aluminium production process. In the absence of the ledge, however, the sidewall-material types become heavily restricted since the cryolite is very corrosive at the electrolysis temperatures. This paper study the corrosion behaviour of sintered nickel ferrite, nickel aluminate, and magnesium aluminate refractories (as possible candidates for sidewall material) in molten aluminium and cryolite melts with various alumina content at 980°C. Immersion tests of refractories with various porosity were conducted to assess the suitability of the refractories in the corrosive environment of the electrolysis cells. Microstructural change of the refractory after immersion were analysed using secondary scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sampling of the melts were taken at 0, 10 min, 30 min, and each hour up to 6 hrs, and subsequently analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. Based on the projected concentration of the refractories constituents in the melts, it was predicted that the corrosion rate of NiFe2O4, NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4 in cryolite with 11 wt per cent Al2O3 were 461 × 103, 1.03 × 103, and 798 × 103 cm/a, respectively. Much lower corrosion rate of 2.3 cm/a for NiFe2O4, 2.6 cm/a for NiAl2O4 and 0.3 cm/a for MgAl2O4 were predicted if the refractories in contact with aluminium melts. Erosion played an important role in the corrosion as the concentration of the refractory constituents in the melts were beyond its solubility limit. It is therefore crucial to increase the densities of the refractory and improve its wetting characteristics.

"The preparation of high-quality synthetic ruitle from electric furnace titanium slag was systematically investigated by activation roasting followed by acid leaching process. The results showed that impurities such as Ca and Mg in titanium slag can be effectively removed and TiO2 grade of the product was markedly improved by the process. High-quality synthetic rutile containing 88.54% TiO2, 0.42% (CaO+MgO) was obtained under the conditions that roasted with 7.5%(wt) H3PO4 at 1000 oC for 2h, followed by two-stage leaching in boiling dilute sulfuric acid for 2h. Mechanism studies showed that anosovite solid solution and silicate minerals were reacted with phosphoric acid in the roasting process. As a result, titanium components in titanium slag turned into rutile (TiO2) and impurities were transformed into acid-soluble phosphate and quartz.IntroductionWith the gradual depletion of natural rutile and the rapid development of titanium industry in China, the natural rutile reserves cannot satisfy the requirement for production of titanium pigment and titanium sponge. Ilmenite is, therefore, becoming main raw material for titanium industry. However, because of its low TiO2 grade, it generally requires preconcentration to titanium-rich material such as titanium slag or synthetic rutile [1-3].Ilmenite resources are extremely rich in Pan-xi area of China, which account for 90.54% of total ilmenite reserves in China [4]. The titanium slag produced by electric smelting of ilmenite concentrate has high contents of Ca and Mg, and is not suitable as a raw material for chloride process and titanium sponge production. Therefore, upgrading titanium slag to prepare raw material suitable for chloride process and titanium sponge production has important significance for the development of China's titanium industry."

This chapter deals with the systems of laws by which governments regulate the exploration for and production of the minerals within their jurisdictions. It is a summary, restricted by necessary space limitations, of material assembled by the author for a forthcoming publication of the United States Bureau of Mines, "Summary of Mining and Petroleum Laws of the World." (Information Circular, 1959.) The present study is organized in three parts, dealing with (1) the historical background of these legal systems, (2) laws of the United States, and (3) laws of other countries of the world. The reader's attention is invited to the acknowledgments at the end of the chapter, which inadequately express the appreciation due those who have assisted in the collection of this material. Part I. Historical Development of Major Western Systems of Land Tenancy with Respect to the Ownership and Control of Minerals The use of metals in primitive societies was largely confined to the manufacture of weapons for self-preservation. The ruler's control over copper, then brass, then iron, was essential to maintenance of his own ascendancy at home and his group's position against neighbors who had access to similar metals. Ancient societies were thus characterized by the ruling group's ownership of minerals and metals. The Egyptian civilization, which emerged in the fourth millenium B.C. upon the agricultural subjugation of the lower valley of the Nile, was responsible for extensive development of the upper valley as a source of mineral wealth. The production of gold during the height of that civilization has been estimated at $30,000,000 per year, thus equaling the early placers of California and Australia. The mines of Egypt were the property of the Pharaohs and were controlled at their direction. Greek mining developed a different scheme of land tenancy which more closely resembled modem concepts. Ground instability and subsequent rock falls are a major concern in underground mines. As a result, several mining companies are conducting risk assessments of the ground support installed in their mines. Risk assessment is now commonly used to provide mine operators with a systematic process to assess the strategic risks that could lead to injury to personnel or loss of production, and evaluate possible risk control measures. Risk assessments can be carried out to identify major hazards, assess the likelihood of occurrence and consequences of each hazard and estimate the level of risk. This process allows assessment of possible remediation actions to minimize the risk and likelihood of occurrence or mitigation of the consequences to a level that is reasonable and practical. This paper presents two practical mine applications of qualitative risk assessment of ground support to highlight the benefits of this process. Yearly or bi-yearly risk assessment of mine excavations can assist mine operators in prioritizing resources and areas that require support remediation. In addition, it provides a mechanism for proactive response to reduce potential risks associated with personnel safety, equipment safety and environmental impact. It also provides a baseline against which changes in ground condition can be compared and quantified.

I. INTRODUCTION. DURING the past 50 years the attention of mining-men has been turned to Africa, and within the past decade prospecting-expeditions sent into Central Africa have resulted in the opening-up of several mines. Having recently spent two years in the Belgian Congo for the Société Internationale Forestiere et Miniere du Congo, it is our purpose to outline briefly the mining-conditions in that part of Central Africa. Before it became, in 1908, a Belgian colony, this region was known as the Congo Free State. II. LOCATION AND AREA. The Belgian Congo lies in southwestern Central Africa, west of the continental divide, is illustrated in Fig. 1. It has a coastline of but 20 miles on the Atlantic, but widens rapidly eastward to points 5° north and 14° south of the equator. Its area is 908,000 sq. miles, which is almost one-quarter that of the United States and Alaska, or more than one and one-half times that of Alaska. Stated in other terms, its area is nearly one-third that of the United States, exclusive of Alaska and the insular possessions, or more than that of all the United States east of the Mississippi river. A series of controlled experiments was conducted at four surface coal mines to study the effects of certain blast parameters upon the ground and air vibration. Preliminary scale-model blasts were conducted at a quarry to provide basic data. It was found that the amplitudes of the ground and air vibration were controlled by the maximum explosive weight per delay. Either cube root or square root scaling could be used for the seismic amplitudes, and cube root scaling could be used for the overpressure amplitudes. Both amplitudes were not significantly affected by the total charge weight per blast, the attitude of the boreholes, or the charge length or diameter. The overpressure amplitudes were affected by the charge depth, the use of cover over surface detonating cord, and the use of adequate stemming. The length of the delay intervals and the spacing of holes were important in determining the potential for reinforcement of the amplitudes in certain directions from the blasts. In downwind directions from the blast, the attenuation of the overpressure with distance decreases. Surface terrain did not significantly affect the overpressure amplitudes within the range investigated. The type of overburden affects the generation of both amplitudes and the propagation of the seismic amplitudes. Spectral analysis of the ground and air vibration is reported. A bibliography of pertinent literature is included as an appendix. A scaled distance of 300 ft/lb1/3 should produce a peak particle velocity of less than 1 ips and an overpressure of less than 128 dB linear peak. For square root scaling, a scaled distance of 75 ft/lbl/2 should limit the ground vibration to less than 1 ips.

In a paper presented at the Heavy Minerals Conference 2001 a laboratory scale investigation on the beneficiation of an ilmenite containing waste stream by magnetizing roasting was reported1.This waste stream contained a high concentration of ilmenite, which was contaminated by chromite and other gangue minerals. Interpretation of the results of the investigation was based on the assumption that during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate, under the oxidizing conditions, the magnetic properties of the chromite would remain constant. In this article thefollowing hypothesis was tested: The magnetic susceptibility of chromite would remain constant during magnetizing roasting of an ilmenite concentrate under the oxidizing conditions reported by Gouws and Van Dyk1. The results of this study indicated that the hypothesis is not true. The increase in the magnetic susceptibility is not significant though and it is expected that it will not influence the final ilmenite quality to a large extent. Based on the assumptions that the bulk magnetic susceptibility of the waste stream samples represents that of the ilmenite in the waste stream, and the bulk magnetic susceptibility of UG1 chromite that of the of chromite in the waste stream, the results also served to confirm that the waste stream with a high chromite content should be roasted under oxidizing conditions, in a reactor with a well-defined retention time distribution (i.e. a fluidized bed reactor), at a roasting temperature of 750°C (rather than the higher temperature ranges of 800°C and 850°C).

El presente trabajo señala el proceso experimental para determinar la transferencia del calor del macizo rocoso al aire en la atmósfera subterránea, dado que a ciertas profundidades cuando la temperatura de la atmósfera subterránea excede el valor máximo admisible por las normas y estándares de confort o comodidad térmica, se presenta el riesgo ambiental térmico. En ese sentido, el estudio comprende tres etapas: la primera etapa fue dedicada al desarrollo de un modelo matemático que establezca la variación de la temperatura debido a la transferencia del calor del macizo rocoso al aire de la atmósfera subterránea; la segunda etapa consistió en validar el modelo matemático en una mina subterránea de cobre, y la tercera fue realizar una aplicación práctica en dos minas con problemas de impacto ambiental térmico. En consecuencia, la metodología propuesta para la evaluación del impacto ambiental térmico en minas subterráneas se fundamenta en procedimientos científicos plenamente sustentados, cuyos resultados indican su aplicabilidad.
