Grand Junction, Colorado’s legacy with uranium mining and milling serves as a model attracting international interest. Access to water and central location to carnotite ore containing uranium and vanadium resulted in the World War II military creating a site in Grand Junction for developing extraction techniques; subsequently, several commercial mill sites were built in the area. Uranium mills produced ore into the 1970’s as well as tonnes of radioactive waste tailings. Tailings contain radium that emits radon gas. Despite the radiation hazard, sandy tailings were added to concrete and became incorporated into roads, schools, businesses and homes. Clean up of sites containing tailings and mill sites began in the 1970’s involving city, state, and federal officials. The Climax mill site had become an auto junk yard mixed with mill tailings. A new disposal site was built out of town and away from the river in the 1990’s. After Climax mill tailings were removed to the disposal site, the land sat vacant for two decades until citizens and city officials developed a masterplan for the riverfront property. The Las Colonias river park is being built in stages including an amphitheater, gardens, businesses and parks. One of the biggest obstacles to site remediation and reuse was overcoming public outrage, fear, and lack of trust which made funding sources scarce.

The formulation of a theoretical basis for the evaluation of in-situ coal through the use of geophysical logs is outlined. This involved the development of an approach to the interpretation of resistivity in environments having multiple conductive and non-conductive components. Utilizing this approach and other conventional interpretation techniques, a program was developed yielding accurate determinations of the in-situ percentages of coal, water and ash for the evaluation of coal deposits. Basic information obtained from the CWA program can be utilized in numerous aspects of total mine planning . Some examples of the practical application of this method are included.

"This paper describes the implementation of an expert system for monitoring and control of the NO. 4 autogeneous mill and spiral circuits at Wabush Mines.This process control system incorporated the mill operating expertize of Wabush Mines operating personnel and was implemented to improve spiral iron recovery and mill productivity by:1. Continuously monitoring the mill power draw and ensuring that the mill feedrate is regulated to prevent damage to the mill motor, while simultaneously maintaining the feedrate at or as close as possible to the maximum feedrate determined by the process supervisor.2. Improving control over the spiral density and feed rate.3. Improving control over both tbe rougher and cleaner wash water.4. Reducing the frequency with which pumps are plugged.5. Allowing modifications to be made easily and quickly to test various operating strategies.This system was installed using COMDALE/C, a real-time Expert System for Process Control. It was readily accepted by the process operators and produces higher production performance in comparison to the other 5 parallel mill lines at a lower power draw."

Commissioning a mineral processing plant has always been a challenging task. The process includes pre- operational verification, dry and wet commissioning, and a gradual ramp-up to full production, all of which must be executed within the shortest possible timeframe, requiring numerous highly interdependent tasks to be conducted concurrently. This phase is under scrutiny by shareholders, corporate management, and other stakeholders who are keen to see a return on investment as the operation starts yielding results. Despite extensive documentation in the literature highlighting its significance, the impact of the commissioning phase remains underestimated in contemporary mining projects. This paper provides an overview of the commissioning process and its associated challenges before focusing on a critical success factor: building a dedicated commissioning team with the required competencies and personality profiles. The roadmap to achieving an efficient plant start-up is outlined. Drawing on over 15 years of experience with more than 20 concentrator commissioning and start-ups, a general framework is presented to maximize success. This method emphasizes the crucial role of the operation and metallurgy team in supporting these projects. Finally, insights from Soutex’s involvement in multiple start-ups are shared, offering lessons learned that emphasize best practices and challenges encountered in expediting the ramp-up process while maintaining high Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards.

"Most engineers are bright, hard-working, reliable and prefer to avoid conflict. An engineering curriculum tends to self-select these characteristics. By most standards, you would expect workers exhibiting these traits to require minimal supervision. But, is this true? Is this how most current engineering managers lead? Looking at some current theories on leadership combined with personal anecdotes, this article will look at some common misconceptions about leading engineers.Engineers are different. There, it has been said. From cartoons to movies to television shows and more, there is a reason stereotypes of engineers resonate. Yes, you can find a lot of individual variation among specific engineers that you may know, but they do not detract from some of the overarching commonalities that engineers are known for.Clash of culturesWhat distinguishes a professional? Raelin (1985), in his book Clash of Cultures, describes professionals as having superior intellectual training, maintaining their own standards of excellence and being supported by associations that maintain the quality of the profession. Engineers obviously fit all three of these ideas: an engineering degree is still regarded as one of the most difficult to attain. Standards are maintained both through peer review and in academia, through ABET accreditation and through professional associations like SME to promote the discipline and foster technical growth.Six characteristics representing professional status are described by Raelin (1985, p. 9):• Expertise — prolonged specialized training in a body of abstract knowledge.• Autonomy — the freedom to choose the means to solve a problem.• Commitment — primary interest is in pursuing the practice of one’s own chosen specialty.• Identification — identifying with the profession and with fellow professionals, both through formal associations and through peers external to the organization.• Ethics — providing service without concern for oneself or without becoming emotionally involved with the client.• Standards — committed to help in policing the conduct of fellow professionals."

"The effect of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) on flotation separation of fluorite from bastnaesite and its selectively depression mechanism on fluorite were studied by single mineral flotation, artificial mixed minerals flotation, solution chemistry analyses, Zeta potential and XPS measurements.The results show that fluorite can be deeply depressed by EDTA while the flotation of bastnaesite is almost unaffected when octanohydroxamic acid (OHA) is used as a collector. The separation index (SI) between bastnaesite and fluorite increases with the dosage of EDTA, SI can be raised from 1.18 to 12.66 when EDTA dosage increases from 0 to 2×10-3mol/L.Solution chemistry analyses show that EDTA is able to convert the Ca(OHA)2 hydrophobic precipitation on fluorite surface to a soluble Ca-EDTA complex but cannot complexly dissolve the Ce(OHA)3 precipitation on bastnaesite surface. Therefore, the Zeta potential of OHA conditioned fluorite can be reduced significantly by EDTA while the reduction degree to Zeta potential of bastnaesite is relatively low. XPS measurement shows that EDTA removes the chemically adsorbed OHA from fluorite surface but has little effect on the adsorbed OHA on bastnaesite surface. As a result, fluorite can be selectively depressed by EDTA in bastnaesite flotation, which behaves an important industrial application prospect in rare earth ore flotation.INTRODUCTIONNowadays, Rare earth elements (shortened as RE) and compounds are of significant importance for a range of rapidly expanding industrial applications including catalysis, metallurgy, renewable energy, and special materials due to their unique electrical, magnetic, optical and chemical properties [1]. The seventeen RE elements, including the lanthanide-group fifteen elements, yttrium and scandium, could be divided into three groups, i.e., light, medium and heavy RE elements based on the different solubility of RE sulfates [2]. Bastnaesite ((Ce,La)CO3), containing approximately 75% REO, is one of the most important light RE minerals [3]. Flotation is the common method to recover basetnaesite [4-6]. Nonetheless, basetnaesite is often associated with calcium-bearing gangue minerals such as fluorite, and the separation of basetnaesite and fluorite by flotation is usually difficult due to their similar surface properties and therefore floatability [7-9]. Therefore, research on high selective flotation reagents of bastnaesite over gangue minerals has attracted a lot of attention [10]."

The errors resulting from field sampling, sample preparation and analysis are investigated for drainage sediments derived from homogeneous sandstone, shale, limestone, basic igneous and granite lithologies as a background to a primary reconnaissance survey of England and Wales. Emission spectrographic analyses of approximately 350 samples for Al, Ca, Fe, K, Si, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ga, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sc, Sn, Sr and V and atomic absorption analyses for Cu, Ni, Mn, Co, Zn and Pb have been treated statistically. For routine broad-scale surveys analysis of the unground -80-mesh sediment fraction proves satisfactory. Sampling error between localities in a stream is shown to be less than spectrographic analytical error for many of the elements considered here, except where mineralisation (contamination) occurs, but exceeds the atomic absorption analytical errors in most cases. Unless it it critical to reduce the amount of between-site variability (having regard to analytical errors) in the regional survey, there appears to be no advantage in the use of a more sophisticated sampling technique. The utility of moving-average maps in reducing the width of the confidence belt around the regional 'geochemical surface', and thus compensating to some extent for the sampling errors, is also demonstrated.

In a modern economy there is a compelling case why governments should not own property rights to mineral deposits. Assuming they do, however, governments will use these constitutional rights to raise revenue. They have two basic instruments to achieve this; a royalty charge on price or a rent tax on income/profits. On the one hand, a royalty charge creates a 'deadweight loss' to society by increasing cut-off grades and decreasing the life-of-mine. They are also regressive. However, they are easy to administer. On the other hand, a rent tax avoids the problem of 'deadweight loss'; it does not impact on the life-of-mine because the tax structure is neutral. But, they are difficult to administer correctly, particularly in the determination of rents and the definition of mining per se. If rents are incorrectly determined capital markets are distorted. And, if mining activities are incorrectly defined, downstream activities could be adversely affected.

The flocculation of -38 pm calcite, hematite and kaolinite aqueous suspensions by the yeast Candida parapsilosis and products derived from rupture of the microorganism was studied. Flocculation of hematite suspensions by the microorganism and its derivatives readily takes place between pH 2.8 and 11.4. Maximum flocculation occurs at about pH 6.5. Flocculation of calcite suspensions by the microorganism and its derivatives readily takes place between pH 7.0 and 11.8. Maximum flocculation occurs at about pH 10.0. Flocculation of kaolinite suspensions was less than that for the other two minerals. However, a soluble fraction derived from the rupture of the organism functioned as a good flocculant for the mineral, albeit at an increased concentration, between pH 2.6 and 11.5. Maximum flocculation occurs between pH 6.8 and 7.2. An attempt is made to relate the behavior of the various systems to the surface characteristics of the minerals and the surface and chemical properties of microorganism and its derivatives. Experimentation used to evaluate the flocculation includes actual flocculation tests, microelectrophoresis measurements and scanning electron microscopy.

This report presents the results of a joint Bureau of Mines-U.S. Department of Energy project that evaluated a newly developed low-coal mining system: the 4M miniminer system. The evaluation took place from April through October 1981 and determined potential health, safety, and productivity factors for the mining system using the surface test facilities at Bruceton, PA. The planning, testing, results of testing, and a summary evaluation of the 4M miniminer system are included in the report. The miniminer system was found to be a very good concept with future potential for safe, healthful, and economic production in thin-seam mining. The mining system was also judged to have considerable potential for use in some coal seams that are presently considered unminable by other existing mining equipment. The preproduction, prototype version of the miniminer system that was tested suffered from several safety and production problems. These problems are also described, along with suggested remedies.

"Recycling of aluminum scrap for production of secondary alloys used for automotive applications is increasing continuously. Automotive alloys require a strict control to remove alloy impurities, inclusions and excess of magnesium. The advantage of aluminum is its recyclability with large energy and emission savings with minimal loss in material properties. The aim of this work is to study the magnesium removal from recycled aluminum by chlorine injection in a reverberatory furnace, and removal by an oxidation process at high temperature in an industrial rotary furnace.The magnesium removal by gas injection is carried out by the reaction between chlorine and magnesium, with its efficiency associated to kinetic factors. In the rotary rapid oxidation of aluminum and magnesium elements at high temperature is characterized by the formation of surface films composed of magnesium oxide. Additionally this work reviews the benefits of an efficient demagging process.IntroductionThe advantages of using light alloys for automotive applications include fuel economy improvement, greenhouse gas reductions and polluting emissions. These characteristics makes the aluminum alloys an attractive option for automotive components such as powertrain products and other critical parts like cylinder heads and blocks. [1]Aluminum alloys coming from recycled automotive components, used beverage cans (UBC) and wrought alloys have positive effects in the energy savings and current environmental trends. Producing a scrap recycled aluminum ingot consumes approximately 5% of the energy required to produce a primary aluminum ingot from bauxite ore. [2]"

The objectives of the Continuous Shaft Lining (CSL) System are to reduce the costs, safety hazards, and time currently required in lining mine shafts with concrete. The CSL will line machine bored shafts downward from the shaft collar on a continuous basis using an inverted, pressurized slipforming technique. The technique for slip-forming downwards has been demonstrated and refined under this program. The approach taken involved laboratory scale testing of key features of the CSL concept. These feature tests included concrete distribution, concrete sealing, concrete slipforming and development of a reliable concrete mix. Based on these results, a full scale above-ground test facility and CSL were designed and fabricated. The objectives of these tests were to demonstrate the viability of the basic concept; to establish operating limits; and to provide input data and information for the design of a second generation shaft lining system. The results of the program have led to a CSL design and operational philosophy which will need to be tested in an underground environment before industry will accept the technology. However, the next generation CSL promises to meet all the original program technical objectives.

Annual requirements of uranium to fuel the 441 currently operating nuclear reactors in the world is 170 million pounds U3O8 (65,385 tonnes U). 2005 global production was 108 million pounds (41,595 t U), of which only 2.7 million pounds U3O8 (1,039 t U), was produced from US uranium deposits. US nuclear utilities represent 26% of the global nuclear capacity but only obtain 2.5% of their supply from US uranium mines. Since 2002 annual global production increased from 93 million pounds U3O8, a 15% increase and the US production increased from 2.3 million pounds to 2.7 million pounds, a 17% increase. Reasonably Assured Resources (RAR) of 12,332 million pounds U3O8 (4.7 million t U) are reported from a wide variety of countries and types of uranium deposits. This RAR suggests that there are significant global uranium resources potentially producible at a price of $50 per pound U3O8 ($130 per kg U). Table 1 shows the distribution of global uranium resources. This table, prepared from historic data maintained by the World Nuclear Association, does not include some areas of the world that are currently considered to contain significant resources of uranium such as Mongolia. Table 1 suggests that the United States contains the fourth largest uranium resource in the world with 890 million pounds U3O8, behind Australia, Kazakhstan and Canada in resources that are producible at a price of $50 per pound U3O8 ($130 per kg U). Within the US, the states that demonstrate the greatest amount of uranium resource are Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas and the Four Corners Area of Arizona, Colorado and Utah.

Juntas de alta qualidade foram produzidas com sucesso utilizando ferramentas de nitreto de boro cúbico policristalino (PCBN), controle de força de 38 kN, velocidade de avanço de 50 mm/min, velocidade de rotação de 200 RPM. Ensaios de dureza e tração foram realizados, evidenciando aumento de dureza na zona de mistura e falha no metal de base. Simulações térmicas calcularam temperaturas globais máximas em torno de 1176 °C e diferentes ciclos térmicos ao longo da espessura da junta, conferindo diferenças microestruturais e mecânicas nestas regiões

To respond to ever-increasing challenges, mining companies have been experimenting with new business models and technologies in order to speed mine development, production, processing and transport. The various experiments involve mobile access to data, intelligent sensors, advanced analytics, virtual collaboration, virtual reality, automated equipment, remote operations centres and strategic partnerships. A synthesis of all these components creates a ænetwork effectÆ that can dramatically improve the overall effectiveness the entire operation. The concept of the Network Centric Mine borrows from a variety of industries, including defence, aerospace, aviation, petroleum, utilities and manufacturing. Central to the concept are improvements to the way we connect people, process, information and technology, resulting in a more highly collaborative business model, with roles and processes designed to take advantage of new technology. The components of the mining operation act as a connected network aimed at a common goal, regardless of the boundaries of organisation and location.The design of this new organisational ecosystem needs to take into account the recent advances that enable the æplug and playÆ integrated collaborative environment, including cloud computing, mobile devices and social networking, as well as advances in augmented reality, robotics, geo-location, digital labelling, simulation and analytics. However, the most consistent lesson from other industries is the need to properly enable the behaviour and process changes necessary for success.Benefits from adopting a network centric approach include the more effective use of scarce expertise, improved data and information analysis, reduced process variance, and more informed and faster decision-making. The future of mining will see more technology savvy workers who will drive the adoption of new processes. The effectiveness of the grouting of saturated, fractured rock in the vicinity of underground workings depends to a great extent on the correct interpretation of the specific hydrogeological conditions at the site. During the planning of grouting operations, calculations of the hydrogeologic co-efficients and of the parameters of the isolating grout curtain(s) and the procedures for forming the curtain(s) must be based on valid hydrogeologic characteristics of the fracture system of the rock within each hydrostratigraphic unit (Anon., 1976). This chapter presents a discussion of the background information that must be collected for these purposes. Details of testing are presented in Chapter 3. The general design of new or the reconstruction of existing underground workings requires a broadly based organization having the expertise to develop a grouting operations plan once it acquires the necessary information. The needed information includes: 1) general information about the hydrogeologic section, 2) the engineering design of the underground workings, 3) the geology of the region, 4) the hydrochemistry of the ground water, 5) the hydraulic properties of the rock, 6) the characterization of all gases present, and 7) characterization of the rock's physical-mechanical properties which is necessary to avoid or control hydrofracturing . The geological documentation portion of the hydrogeological investigation is prepared based on the results of geologic mapping, geophysical surveys and on geo-exploratory operations at a regional and local scale. Geological data from the excavation of other underground workings in adjacent areas of the region is also included. Finally the results of site specific investigations in boreholes constructed at the site of the proposed underground activity are incorporated. A section of the preliminary report entitled "General Information about the Project Site" patterned after the parent STG guidance document on this subject must be com- piled based on the contents of geological reports and on the general construction plan for a new project or the plan for reconstruction of an existing operation. This section of the preliminary report must contain concise information about the conditions under which the planned grouting operations are to be conducted. The information must cover the geo- graphic, administrative, and economic subject areas also. Information about sources of electrical power, heat and water supplies, the presence and characteristics of local construction materials suitable for making grout (particularly clay and cement for the clay-based grout), transportation, and the status of communication lines and other services must be included in this section. Map scales for this section should be on the order of 1:25,000. The technical characterization of planned underground workings is presented in a project report chapter called "General Construction Plan for a New or the Restoration of an Old Operation. " The characterization comprises concise information about the purpose of the workings, the planned depths (for shafts) and the length (for horizontal and inclined workings), the inside and excavated diameters (for shafts), the cross-sectional area (for inclined and horizontal workings), and the face and mouth markers. If excavated underground workings exist in the region, then a concise description of them must be provided. The characterization of all excavations and all operational conditions must be specified. The location within the general structure of the proposed operation is specified. Flow charts must be included in this section that show: 1) the plan for opening the deposit, 2) the plans of the mining operations, and 3) the planned geological sections as they relate to the main workings. These graphical flow charts and appendices are drawn in scales of 1:2000 or 1:5000. 2.1 GEOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION The geological characterization of a site of proposed underground workings includes the following principal subject areas: stratigraphy, lithology, structural geology and a characterization of the status of fracturing. 2.1.1 STRATIGRAPHY AND LITHOLOGY A description of the geological section of the rocks to be intersected by the planned underground workings is complied on the basis of: 1) research data derived from core extracted from exploratory boreholes and monitoring boreholes, 2) the documentation and mapping of all natural out- crops in the region, 3) the data from all existing under-ground workings in the regions where operations are being canied out already, along with data from adjacent regions, 4) the data from surface and borehole geophysical investigations (standard and specially developed logging methods, and 5) regional stratigraphy. The geological description of the rock must express the maximum detail possible. The description provides the name of the rock, the granulometric composition (for fragmented rock), the composition and type of stratification, the drilling characteristics of the rock, a visual estimate of porosity and density for each stratum identified, the karstic

The disposal of mine waste continues to be one of the main controlling factors in the economics and feasibility of project development. Particular to gold and precious metal mining, waste disposal is further complicated by the environmental and political implications of the use of cyanide. Regulatory compliance criteria have partially dictated and can be anticipated to further dictate the approach and methods of tailings disposal. To develop practical, economic, and environmentally acceptable tailings disposal systems within these criteria requires the use of common sense approaches and the application of available technology. Waste disposal is typically considered during the pre-feasibility stages of project evaluation. At this time, the main emphasis is on the economics and practicality of extracting the metal values from the ore. Frequently, the result of this is that the nature of the tailings and the ability to dispose of the tailings is prejudged. It is also frequently the case, however, that during the feasibility stage and project permitting, the requirements for tailings disposal become paramount.

To study the fracture evolution of overlying strata for ascending mining in a short-distance coal seam group, a two-dimensional physical simulation model was designed based on a specific geological condition. The fracture development zone was divided into the compaction zone and active zone by monitoring and analyzing the macro fracture evolution of the surrounding rock mass during the excavation of multiple coal seams. The secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata was demonstrated with a physical model. The quantity, length, and inclination of the fracture were calculated with MATLAB software, and the results were verified by geological radar. The total number of fractures between two coal seams increased with a “parabola” shape during the excavation of the lower coal seam, the crack angle was mainly vertical and horizontal, and the number of horizontal cracks first increased and subsequently decreased; the excavation of the upper coal seam caused the secondary fracture development process of the overlying strata, and the relief range and its extent increased. The mining-induced cracks from the lower and upper coal seams connected with each other, especially the permanent vertical fracture in the cutting room side and face side. Finally, the three-dimensional gas fissure was formed.

PHOSPHATE ROCK is a low- priced commodity. This fact has influenced the choice of mining and beneficiating methods to a greater degree, perhaps, than in most other low-grade mining operations. The fact that many yards of everburden and matrix must be stripped and mined per ton of salable "rock" produced and sold has necessitated he development of relatively simple btneficiating plants having high capacity and low capital and operating costs. The law of diminishing returns must always be reckoned with in phosphate mining and washing, and often recovery must be sacrificed in favor of costs in order to achieve the highest over-all economic efficiency. The phosphate-bearing formation, known as "matrix," is composed of (1) phosphate pebbles, which are somewhat rounded in shape and which vary in size from 1-in, to micron sizes, (2) rounded quartz grains usually smaller than 10 mesh, and (3) clay, of varying "stiffness," which is the binder of the matrix. The phosphate pebbles vary in hardness. Their color, which varies from white to black, is not a reliable indicator of the Bone Phosphate of Lime (B.P.L.) content of the
