A flat slot is created in rock to cause stress relief effects in a pair of hydraulic borehole pressure cells (previously installed in drill holes above and below the slot ) , which act as sensing devices . This relief is annulled by repressuring the slot by means of a flat hydraulic cell . The slot pressure at annulment is taken to be the existing ground stress at right angles to the plane of the slot . A number of trial installations in the rib of a mine drift showed that for a valid determination of ground stress the sensing devices that respond to relief and repressuring must be within a specified zone close to the pressure transmitter ; otherwise the indicated ground stress may be excessive . By using an additional pair of borehole pressure cells , installed a few feet away , the existing rock stress can be redetermined at intervals , irrespective of a change of stress intensity subsequent to the initial installation . Based on these findings , equipment and procedures have been developed that make possible the installation and operation of a permanent rock stress monitoring station for observing mining - induced stress changes . The station consists of a 12 - in - wide hydraulic pressure cell cemented in a flat slot and four 2- by 8 - in flat hydraulic pressure cells in nearby drill holes . All drilling for the installation can be done with an air leg drill and conventional bits . Once the installation is completed , all required information is obtained by Bourdon pressure gage readings . The apparatus is simple , relatively inexpensive , and reliable under operating conditions in a wet mine . Unlike most methods of rock stress determination , this scheme permits periodic remeasurement of absolute rock pressure over several years , without additional drilling or instrumentation . "Experiments in the determination of friction factors for fan-pipe installations were carried on in a Butte mine during the fall and winter of 1922-23, under a cooperative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the Anaconda Ccpper Mining Co. The results have been summarized in a separate paper,*** and this report, which is one of several giving more detailed data, discusses the methods used and the application of the results to fan-pipe practice.The use of canvas and galvanized-iron pipe, 8 to 20 inches in diameter, with small fans, usually electrically driven blowers, is an important factor in the ventilation of metal mines and is increasing in coal mines and long tunnels. In the Matte district the standard installation is an electrically driven small blower fan and 8 to 16 inch canvas pipe.The application of available data on friction losses in sheet-metal pipe to mine installations was doubtful, and very little has been published on canvas pipe, except general statements that the friction looses are greater than in galvanized-iron pipe. Experiments by Weeks and others,**** who determined friction losses under laboratory conditions for a few typical materials used in mine equipment, supported the statements.In 1918, one of the authors (Richardson) conducted tests for the Anaconda Copper Mining Cc. on the friction losses in canvas-pipe systems and the beet type of centrifugal blower for use with such pipe lines. He obtained the average total resistance per unit of length in use, without reference to the variable conditions of the lines. The results were of great value in developing more efficient equipment for average service conditions, and indicated that average friction losses for the commercial canvas tubing then used by the company were equal to or lees than these given for galvanized-iron pipe. Later on, the particular canvas tested was discarded for a heavier and more service-material."

"This paper presents the final wall blasting practices at Eldorado Kisladag Gold Mine in Turkey. Benchmark and improved wall control designs were explained in detail. Kisladag Mine has been implementing a high quality slope stability program on-site. The quality of pit walls is generally considered excellent, with very few wall failures being evident and with presplit hole barrels prominent in most areas of the pit. However, a minor scale slope failure occurred recently at the north-east section the pit. A project was initiated to diagnose the cause of the crest loss and evaluate ways to limit its effect on final walls. Final wall blasting practices and geotechnical designs were evaluated. The work presented in this paper showed that changes to the blasting and geotechnical parameters are required atthe north-east section of the pit. Geotechnical design changes were 10 m bench heights with 70 ° slope face angle at that specific area. Having implemented several geotechnical and blast design changes (elimination of the subdrill for the catch bench, appropriate primer location, more favorable blast tie-up and delays), the crest loss was minimized significantly (<1.5 m) (<5 ft)."

Known resources of nickel laterites considerably exceed nickel sulfide resources and there is a growing consensus that most new nickel production will be sourced from laterites. The development of nickel laterite projects is very capital intensive due to inherently low grades, inability to concentrate ore prior to processing, complex processing technology and typically large infrastructure requirements. This has resulted in most recently proposed projects being "mega-projects," to achieve economics of scale. However, this may result in unacceptable project risk in many cases. Furthermore, many known laterite resources are not large enough to support a mega-project. This paper describes an alternative model for nickel laterite project development that allows, smaller scale and reduces capital exposure. The relative significance of corrosive and erosive wear in magnetic taconite grinding is examined. The influence of different types of aeration, namely, nitrogen, air and oxygen on ball war was established for mild steel and high carbon low alloy steel balls. Ball wear data from dry and wet grinding tests are compared with those obtained in the presence of an organic solvent that does not promote electrochemical corrosion. &apos;Marked ball grinding, tests along with electrochemical measurements involving ball material and magnetite electrodes indicate that contribution from oxygen towards wear (corrosive wear) is relatively small and abrasive wear appears to be significant. Rheological properties of the slurry-appear to have an important bearing on the abrasive wear of grinding balls.

Where once the oil geologist was content to pick samples out of a mud ditch and try to identify oil formations from the color or appearance of flakes of rock bailed out of a well, now he has to deal with graphic electrical logs obtained by intricate and highly technical electrical apparatus and to make exact determinations to the fraction of an inch of the depth and thickness of an oil sand 2 miles below the surface.

A conformação a laser (Laser Beam Forming – LBF) é um processo mecânico sem contato realizado pela introdução de tensões térmicas na superfície de um material com laser, a fim de induzir a deformação plástica. Neste estudo, foram realizadas conformações em chapas de 1,6 mm de espessura, de alumínio de alta resistência, classe AA6013-T4, com uso de um laser de Yb-fibra operando em modo contínuo. A potência do laser foi variada entre 200 e 1000 W e a velocidade entre 3 e 30 mm/s, com o feixe desfocalizado em 5 mm sobre a superfície da chapa. O ângulo de dobramento das chapas variou entre 0,1 e 2,5° por passe, dependendo das condições experimentais. Na condição de maior ângulo, 1000 W e 30 mm/s, a poça de fusão atingiu 0,6 mm de profundidade, porém sem alterar a microestrutura da parte inferior da chapa. Em todas as condições, a dureza se manteve constante em aproximadamente 100 HV, sendo semelhante ao material de base. Para verificar a aplicabilidade do método, foram desempenadas chapas previamente soldadas na configuração T. O método mostrou-se eficiente em corrigir o empenamento de chapas com inclinação de até 5°.

Earl C. Herkenhoff Publication of the article "The Flotation Behavior of Digested Asphalt Ridge Tar Sands" by R.J. Smith and J.D. Miller has confirmed and again spotlighted a most significant and important development in the field of tar sand and heavy oil mining. This is the ability to recover 95 % of the bitumen in dry tar sands by a hot water process. The initial investigation by Miller and Sepulveda in early 1978, "Separation of Bitumen from Dry Tar Sands," was the first blockbuter. It is disappointing that there has been so little scientific and industry ackowledgement that the authors laid to rest the long entrenched belief that the sand grains had to be "water wetted" for a hot water process to be applicable. Dr. Miller and his researchers at the University of Utah used slightly different mineral dressing terminology in describing their process but it is essentially the old, established technique of high solids attrition scrubbing at elevated temperatures with a conditioner or modifier, followed by dilution and froth flotation. Similar techniques were described in detail for other nonmetallic minerals in the mid-1940s by Stuart Falconer of American Cyanamid Co. The authors used a 15-minute "scrub" period (or in their terminology "digester step") at 73% solids and 95°C (203°F) in a 0.3 m solution of sodium carbonate -about 4 kg/t (8 lb per st) of tar sand. Flotation was at 10% solids. Obviously, the scrub is an expensive step with respect to energy input but the high recovery of bitumen appears to justify it. Two basic questions then arise: • What are the effects of shorter scrubbing time, lower temperature, and less sodium carbonate? • Would a two-stage approach be advantageous? That is, could you get the major proportion of the bitumen with a mild scrub and apply the high power and temperature only to the refractory portion? These variables should be evaluated. Apparently, all results were only for rougher flotation. What would the grade and recovery of bitumen be if multiple cleaner flotation steps were employed? We must concede that a 60-62% grade of bitumen leaves considerable room for upgrading. Finally, it should be noted by all executives who approve funds for heavy oil recovery schemes, most of which are variations of in-situ methods, that mining can yield a 95% recovery of bitumen. That is correct, 95%. Imagine what that does to the total barrels recovered from a heavy oil resource compared with the scrawny 30-35% maximum recovery we are getting now. Miller We, too, share Mr. Herkenhoff s enthusiasm for the mining of tar sands-heavy oil and continue the development of related processing technology. Specifically, it will be noted that by appropriate control of bitumen viscosity in the feed (probably the most important variable for successful separation) the recovery can be accomplished at low digestion temperature and low addition of alkali. A 91 t/d (100 stpd) pilot plant based on our technology is now being operated by Enercor in Salt Lake City (Hatfield, Oblad, and Miller, 1982). In these same pilot facilities, rougher concentrates containing more than 80% bitumen on a dry basis are being produced from Asphalt Ridge Feed. However, the processing of certain other tar sands results in incomplete digestion of bitumen/sand aggregates as discussed elsewhere (Miller and Misra, 1982). Such undigested aggregates are shown in Fig. 1. In this regard, it is intended that a recycle stream will be installed in the pilot plant to provide for redigestion of middling products. "Through-the-Earth (TTE) radio has been proposed as a means of emergency communications in mines. The propagation of a TTE radio signal depends chiefly on the subsurface conductivity distribution. Robust forward models of signal propagation can be computed based on a realistic conductivity estimate. These models can be used, for example, to optimize frequency, estimate signal range, identify zones of anomalously strong or weak signals, or to optimize the position of the above-ground TTE radio unit. A method was developed to determine the conductivity distribution of a mine overburden using TTE radio transmission data. At multiple locations in an underground test mine, we recorded a wideband electromagnetic signal, spanning a frequency range of approximately 500 to 8,500 Hz, transmitted from a vertical magnetic dipole at the surface. Using a finite-difference time-domain forward modeling code, a layered Earth conductivity model that accounts for topography was fitted to the observed data, which minimizes the difference between the calculated and observed attenuations for each transmitter-receiver pair, for each frequency of interest. Introduction and objectiveThrough-the-Earth (TTE) radio has been proposed for emergency underground communications. The most common type of TTE radio is based on the transmission and reception of signals by electromagnetic induction. These signals are in the extremely low to very low frequency range — in practice, between 400 and 9,000 Hz. This technology was historically developed for mine safety, although recently other applications have been suggested, such as communications in civilian infrastructure like high-rise buildings or tunnels, in the military, and even for wireless detonation and activation. In a coal mine, which is a setting of particular importance for TTE radio due to the higher risk of accidents, day-to-day communications can be done through a wired link. High-frequency line-ofsight systems, whose signals cannot penetrate rock, are also used for communications from nonfixed points. Another option is a leaky feeder system, which is a permutation of a line-ofsight system and a wired link, where a partially shielded coaxial cable allows the signal to “leak” (Delogne, 1982). In an incident such as a mine collapse or explosion, a TTE radio system can still provide a communication link, as wired systems can be severed, and line-ofsight systems cannot penetrate through collapsed portions of the mine, or to the surface (Forooshani et al., 2013; Yarkan et al., 2009)."

In South Africa, as in many other countries, the young engineering graduate is promoted quite soon to a management position where he uses less technical skills and more people-oriented skills. In the standard undergraduate curriculum for engineering, little attention is paid to the non-technical issues of the profession. An undergraduate course in management techniques cannot be a substitute for a MBA or Masters degree in engineering management, but can at least create an awareness of the practical problems facing the engineering manager. The aim of this paper is to provide an outline of such a course structure at the University of Stellenbosch. A survey is also presented on management training in the South African and Australian mineral industries. Feedback from students and graduates indicates that the fresh graduate does not fully appreciate the value of such a course until he/she achieves a position of responsibility after two or three years. Nevertheless, the management course appears to be successful in widening the perspectives of the engineer. As explained frequently in management journals, the technically oriented person (the engineer) has a convergent thought pattern, which could be in conflict with the more divergent thought pattern of the top, personnel or marketing manager. It becomes increasingly imperative for the young minerals engineer to be externally oriented instead of the traditional internal focus of engineering. The engineer should not only be aware of environmental issues in the technical design and operation of plants, but should also understand the inter-relationship between public relations, political pressures and environmental perceptions vis-d-vis technical facts.

"The index A*b, determined from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) drop weight tester (DWT) results, has become well-known in the mining industry as a reliable measure of ore hardness in impact or crushing, having the inferred units of t/kWh. This index evolved from a long history of comminution studies at the JKMRC, including the development of the now superseded JKTech twin-pendulum, the industry standard JK Drop Weight Tester (JKDWT) and the faster alterative JKMRC rotary breakage tester (JKRBT). A reduced version of the DWT, the semi-autogenous grinding mill comminution test (SMC test&reg;), also provides estimates of the A*b though the testing of only one particle size at five specific energies. Experimental determination of A*b using the above devices/tests requires samples, with sufficient mass, to be sent to designated laboratories, registered to conduct such tests. This protocol is fine for bankable and commercial testing, where material characterisation data is used in conjunction with machine specific data in modelling and simulation, and power based calculations. However, for comparative testing, where results are required at the time of sampling (eg for plant troubleshooting or spot-surveys), or for rapid ranking of geometallurgical samples, these existing tests simply do not provide a timely, viable and cost-effective solution. In order to address this critical void in the realm of comparative testing, a new device has been developed, exploiting a central feature of single particle impact testing – that the A*b can be reliably estimated using one precise low energy test. This device, for which a patent is currently pending, called the HIT (Hardness Index Tester), has been precision engineered to allow users to break narrowly sized fragments at a set specific energy, in a safe and easy manner. The manufacturing materials have been chosen carefully to ensure compatibility with the intended use and portability to any site, whilst minimising cost. The device is supplied with a novel quality assurance / quality control (QA/QC) feature, to ensure that the targeted potential energy is consistently delivered. The product from the HIT breakage test can be quickly sized using a single screen to determine the mass per cent undersize, from which the A*b index is calculated directly at site – eliminating the need to send the raw data off-site for analysis. On presized fragments, a single test using 20 fragments takes less than five minutes to complete, and the results are immediately available. The HIT is currently being tested at a major mining laboratory in the US and the results to date have proved it can deliver on all fronts. This paper describes the new prototype device, which offers users a low cost in-house mechanism for estimating the A*b at any mine site, with potential applications on fragments up to 25 mm from drill core, blast chip rejects or the grinding circuit feed. It also outlines the results of field tests carried out by an objective third party mining group and compares the results with those from current industry standard tests conducted on the same material.Citation:Kojovic, T, 2016. Today, we employ 22,000 people across 19 countries and have 14 mines including open pits, shafts, beach-sands and seabed. 1.2. Last year our sales were US$5.7 billion and our total production amounted to 47 million carats which means a 40% global market share. For the Kyoto buffs in the audience, the company consumes 66 million cubic metres of water per annum, 210 million litres of hydrocarbon fuel and 1,600 GWh of electricity. Concrete-infused cloth is used in several civil and mining surface applications whose circumstances are similar to some of those in underground mining. A feature of this material is that it cannot be overhydrated. In underground conditions, however, the excess supply of water to the cloth for hydration could lead to muddy and potentially unsafe working conditions, as well as resource wastage by supplying more water to the construction site than is needed. The objective of this study is to verify the water-to-cloth ratio and study the effect of hydration level on the strength of the Concrete Cloth product. We found that the strength increases with increased hydration up to a 1:2 water-to-cloth ratio by weight, after which the strength holds steady regardless of additional hydration. This confirms the 1:2 water-tocloth ratio by weight for hydration and confirms that strength is retained even if the cloth is excessively hydrated.

"INTRODUCTION Adoption of rubber-tire shuttle cars underground in conjunction with mobile coal-loading machines has introduced new problems in the control of dust on mine roadways. Where this type of loading and transportation is used, development and extraction are generally rapid, with the result that much coal is spilled from the shuttle cars during normal operation, Coal in the roadways from this source and from sloughing of the ribs is ground to fine dust by the wheels of the 'shuttle cars and by the treads of the loading and mining machines. The coal dust usually is somewhat contaminated by pulverized rock, and the mixture could not be loaded with the run-of-mine coal without undue contamination of the product even if it were cleaned up promptly.The presence of large quantities of fine, loose dust, which is constantly stirred up and kept in suspension in air by the traffic, constitutes a grave explosion hazard, reduces visibility along the roadways, and is physiologically harmful to the workmen who breathe the air. From the operating standpoint the loose material is undesirable along the roadways because it provides poor traction for the trucks and thereby increases wear and power consumption. The dust-explosion hazard could be eliminated or reduced by frequent application of sufficient rock dust on the roadbed; but this would not remedy the other difficulties, and in fact it might intensify them. Where practicable, the most direct and effective safety measure is to clean up and remove promptly all dust that forms and settles on the roadways. Unfortunately, in many cases this procedure is not feasible. A third Suggested remedy is to prevent dispersal of the dust into the air and to promote its consolidation on the floor by wetting the dust particles.During the past few years several mines have used calcium chloride on shuttle-car roadways to allay the dust thereon. When exposed to the' humid atmosphere of the mine this salt absorbs Moisture from the air and deliquesces, and in this way wets the dust on the floor of the roadway. In a survey conducted in coal mines in southern West Virginia and in eastern Kentucky where calcium chloride has been in use, somewhat conflicting re- ports were received regarding the merits of the application, and several operators have abandoned the practice either because of actual or assumed disadvantages. The purpose of the study described in this report was to collect and correlate evidence and, on the basis of experimental data obtained in the field and in laboratory tests, to present a clearer picture of the factors involved in the allaying of dust by use of salts."

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYThe Guymard mine in Orange County, N. Y., is reported to have been discovered in 1862 and mined until 1876, producing 10,000 tons of lead and zinc ore. 2/The property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines 3/ in 1948. Development work was done by the Bureau in April and May 1949 and March 1950. During these two periods four drill holes totaling 2,090 feet were completed. British Coal's mining research programme is directed towards the strategic objectives of reducing production costs, improving product quality and resolving health, safety and environmental issues. The strategy for R&D is described and selected parts of the programme are reviewed. Two major initiatives are directed towards reducing production costs: geotechnics and automation. Integrated exploration techniques are used to delineate geological structures as an aid to mine planning. Rockbolting is being rapidly introduced and the in situ stress field has been found to be of significant influence. Automation is the subject of a major programme. A strategy for coal quality has been devised. The health, safety and environmental programme concentrates on the traditional hazards together with surface environmental problems.

A study was made of filtration techniques for recovering the major part of the tin contained in iron - tin alloys known as hardhead . Special smallscale filtering apparatus and a three - stage cyclic process were developed . Eighty- seven percent of the tin contained in an alloy of 82 percent tin and 17 percent iron was recovered as pure metal by pressing at 975° C followed by a second pressing at 800 ° C and a final filtering at 250 ° C. Small amounts of Sb , Cu , and Fe impurities were removed by adding Al to the molten product and performing another filtration at 250 ° C.

WITH all the advantages of handling bulk materials by means of belt conveyor also go some problems, one of the most persistent being that of cleaning. When sticky materials are being carried; the build-up of material on the return idler rolls results in difficulty of belt training. Much attention has been given to the problem of cleaning conveyor belts, and a great variety of cleaning devices have been developed. Even the best involve troublesome maintenance, and none can completely remove the fine particles imbedded in the belt cover, which cause rapid wear of the return idler rolls, and at the same time, of the belt cover as well. One of the major rubber companies has been promoting a two-way belt system, in which the conveyor belt is given two successive 90" twists at each end to enable it to carry material in both directions simultaneously. For many years the flat belt transmission industry has installed quarter-turn and half-turn twists in countless numbers of instances. While quarter-turn and half-turn twists in transmission belts is a familiar application, the 180" twist apparently has never been previously attempted with a conveyor belt. About a year ago, two officials of the National Iron Co. of Duluth, Lester and Lewis Erickson, proposed twisting the return run of a conveyor belt on an installation that they were designing for one of the major iron ore producers. Since then the soundness of the idea has been demonstrated, both in theory and by practical test, with the result that the installation of two conveyor belts involving the twisting of the return run is now under way. These two installations are designed to have the return run of the conveyor belt twisted 180" as it leaves the snub pulley at the head drive. The clean underside of the belt is thus placed against the idlers on the return run as well as on the carrying run. Just before it enters the tail pulley, the belt will be twisted an additional 180°, restoring it to its normal position. Because this twisting of the return run of a conveyor belt is a radical departure from accepted practice, an elaborate and extensive test was conducted early in 1950 to demonstrate that this twisting of the return run could be done successfully, also to establish application data for accomplishing this twisting, and to determine if any special equipment would be required. In studying this concept of twisting the return run of a conveyor belt, a number of problems need to be solved, primarily the ones brought about by deliberately introducing an unequal distribution of stress across the conveyor belt and controlling that maldistribution of stress, while confining it to the return run portion. The tension conditions existing in the return run of a conveyor belt are clear to all designers. First, the return run carries the initial or slack side tension of the conveyor belt, the tension that must be supplied to the return run to provide proper frictional contact between the belt and the driving pulley so that the necessary power can be transmitted from the driving pulley to the belt without slippage. This slack side tension is supplied to the belt by means of takeups, either of the gravity type, which can be vertical or horizontal, or by means of the screw type. With inclined or declined belt conveyors the slope tension also must be considered, which is the tension imposed by the weight of the belt hanging from the top pulley. This slope tension frequently can furnish part or even all of the initial tension required. The maximum value of the slope tension will be at the top pulley, and it decreases in direct proportion to the length. In addition to the foregoing, it frequently is desirable to impose arbitrarily additional slack side tension to provide sufficient tension at the loading point at the tail, so that the belt will adequately support its load between the carrying idlers. Design Conditions for Twisting A number of design conditions exist, which must be satisfied successfully to accomplish the twisting of the return run without exceeding normal working limits in any portion of the conveyor belt. It is obvious that the belt edge, in its relation to the center of the belt, must stretch in making a twist, because as the twist is accomplished, the belt edge travels through a longer path than does the center of the belt. It is further obvious that if the edge of the belt is stretched, a redistribution of stress in the belt is required to allow this edge stretching. Moreover, this stress will be unequal across the width of the belt, having a maximum value at the edges, with a minimum value at the- center of the belt. With correct initial tension in the return run of a conveyor belt, the existing slack side tension will be unequally distributed when a twist is introduced.
