A prototype EM Location System was fabricated and tested at the Geneva Mine near Dragerton, Utah. This system consisted of six manpack transmitters and six manpack receivers covering the frequency band from 900 Hz to 2900 Hz as well as a six channel receiver designed for use, in a helicopter. Tests showed that EM signals from lightweight (3/4 lb) transmitters could be detected both on the surface and from a helicopter through as much as 4450 ft of relatively high conductivity (2 X 10- 2 mhos/m) overburden. Furthermore, the resulting field strength profiles could be used to determine source location to within 150 ft of the actual surveyed location in the mine. Modifications were made to a Monitoring, Locating and Communications System being tested at the Bruceton Mine, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These modifications have improved the performance and quality of the paging and voice telephony mode of the system. Goldex Mine is an underground mine located near the town of Val-d?Or. Multiple innovations were required to work the mine. Due to its low grade, it was important to develop a bulk mining method to economically extract the ore. The method used is a combination between shrinkage stope and long hole stope methods. This modified method is more than adequate; however, all of the ore body must be liberated in a very short period of time. Therefore, to bring down 23 Mt of ore, large blasts up to 1.8 Mt are required. The situation is also complicated by the fact that the mine is located in a residential area. No less that 40 homes are built within a 1 km radius of the mine site. In addition to managing mass blasts, means must also be found to mitigate the vibrations produced by the blast to diminish the disturbance to the neighbourhood. Therefore, the mine used numerous tools to properly plan the blasts and reduce the impacts. A program to control vibrations was one of the first tools put in place. The program?s aim was to draw up an action plan to ensure a follow-up of the homes by inspecting them. The second tool was to develop a methodology to plot a reliable attenuation curve and to adequately determine the maximum charge weight for each blast. Finally, effective communication tools were developed to inform the neighbourhood. There was a huge amount of work to be done in relation to the bench. Reliable and fast loading techniques had to be found to load large blasts in a very short period of time. Adequate logistics had to be developed to send underground more than 20,000 kg of emulsion per day while performing the daily underground operations. Technology had to be developed to adapt the i-kon electronic blasting system to large blasts. Since the control of the charges was the major factor to reduce surface vibrations, it was important to employ loading techniques that would permit decking of the long holes to reduce the charge weight per delays without adversely affecting the loading. All of this work requires an enormous amount of energy but also close collaboration between the different stakeholders (various departments, suppliers and consultants).

Os custos operacionais e os problemas ambientais são, efetivamente, os fatores tecnológicos importantes a serem considerados na otimização da produção de DRI. Portanto, o teor de carbono do DRI tornou-se essencial em virtude da capacidade de gerar energia química no banho de aço, complementando assim a eletricidade em FEA, e as contribuições exotérmicas da oxidação de Si e C nos conversores LD. Este trabalho faz parte de um programa completo de cooperação entre a companhia de mineração Samarco e o Grupo de Siderurgia da PUC-Rio, lidando com as equações cinéticas da metalização e carburização simultânea em fornos de redução direta. Para este efeito, o reator foi dividido em três zonas internas: Redução, Transição e zona de resfriamento. Além disso, também foram consideradas três regiões concêntricas: periférica, média e centro. Á partir desses resultados, para um tipo de pelotas RD específico, mistura de gases utilizados nas instalações industriais e similar flui-dinâmica do processo, as equações cinéticas de metalização e carburização foram estabelecidas para cada zona. Um programa computacional METCARB, totalmente baseado nessas equações cinéticas, foi então concebido. Finalmente, uma validação adicional procedeu-se tendo em conta duas corridas operacionais industriais.

An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African platinum group metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky Reef is low in chromium and does not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8?10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process, care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation of Fe2NiO4 (trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever-increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3.A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. Copper nickel separation is performed by mineral processing techniques both pre and post smelting in Copper Cliff at Vale Canada?s Operations. The separation at Clarabelle Mill takes advantage of the ore mineralogy to affect a separation on the rougher concentrate where chalcopyrite and pentlandite exhibit high liberation and high recoveries thus their separation is simple although incomplete. The copper concentrate comprises only 50% of the copper in ore with the remaining copper being separated post smelting in the Matte Separation plant where the slow cooled Bessemer Matte is again treated by mineral processing operations using flotation to separate the chalcocite and heazlewoodite and magnetic separators to remove a metallic nickel alloy. This paper discusses the mineralogy, separation processes and work currently underway to improve the separation of copper from nickel in these plants.

Tonnage quantities of hafnium metal have been prepared in Kroll-process equipment designed for producing zirconium. Some slight process modifications have been necessary, but overall operation is the same as for zirconium. Hafnium oxide is chlorinated in the presence of carbon and the resultant hafnium tetrachloride reduced by magnesium metal. Byproduct magnesium chloride is removed in a high-vacuum distillation step and the hafnium sponge metal crushed for further use. Arc-melted metal can be forged and rolled to sheet, but the best material produced to date would not be considered cold ductile. INTRODUCTION This investigation is part of the program for the production of pure metals from domestic and foreign ores that has been underway at the Bureau of Mines for several years. It was done in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission and the Bureau of Ships.

THE Fletcherville Furnace was built in 1864 and 1865, making its first blast from August until October of the latter year, when it was blown out to prevent its "bunging-up." Repairs were made in time to enable it to be blown in again December 12th, 1865, the blast ending October 7th, 1866. Total product 1921.15 tons iron, an average of 6.8.2.5 tons per day, from ores yielding 44.8 per cent. Consumption of charcoal 223.2 bushels per ton of iron. The furnace journal up to this time shows no record of furnace dimen¬sions, or temperature of the blast, but as near as can be ascertained, they were as follows, viz. Height of stack, 42 feet. Diameter of bosh, 11 feet. Angle of bosh, 7 1/2 inches to 12 inches rise, about 58°. Diameter of open tunnel head, 42 inches. Number of tuyeres 3; each 3 inches in diameter. Dam 15 inches high. Tuyeres 24 inches high. Tymp 22 1/2 inches high. Diameter of steam cylinder, 20 1/4 inches. Stroke 5 feet. Diameter of blast cylinder, 64 inches. The engine is direct-acting horizontal non-condensing. December 26th, 1.866, the furnace was again put in blast, having been considerably altered in the crucible; the height of stack, bosh, and tunnel head remaining as before. Six tuyeres were put in, three in each of the side arches. The hearth or crucible was rectangular in form, 3 feet wide x 32 feet long x 62 feet high. Inclination of bosh 58°. Height of tuyeres 26 inches ; nozzles 2 1/4 inches diameter. Temperature of blast estimated to be about 500°.

Human beings have been dependent on metals and alloys for livelihoods since time immemorial. In fact, there is irrefutable evidence that successful ancient civilizations achieved supremacy over their environments through the mastery of metals and alloys (Miller, 1995; Mtetwa, 2022). Over time, metals and alloys have evolved to become ubiquitous engineering materials indispensable to mankind, with applications in industrial and residential infrastructure, agriculture, energy generation and storage, transportation and communication systems, and manufacturing, among others (Elshkaki et al., 2018; Watari et al., 2021). Population growth, technological developments, and increase in urbanization and industrialization are all intricately linked to the intensity of use of metals and alloys. With up to 5 billion people estimated to live in urban areas by 2030 (Armstrong, 2009), the demand for metals and alloys will inevitably increase in order to satisfy the increased demand for infrastructure, machinery, and other human needs (Elshkaki et al., 2018; Watari et al., 2021). According to LePan (2022), urbanization and growth of mega-cities will increase the demand for metals and alloys, such as nickel, steel, aluminium, and copper by 116%, 50%, 57%, and 26%, respectively, between 2019 and 2035. Naturally, the production of metals and alloys from natural ores, secondary resources, and/or a combination of both, to meet this increased demand will invariably lead to the increase in generation of deleterious emissions in the form of wastes. In fact, mining and metallurgical wastes currently constitute the world’s largest anthropogenic streams by mass, often containing a high concentration of elements and compounds that can cause potential damage to natural ecosystems and humans (Hudson-Edwards et al., 2011; Lottermoser, 2011; Matinde et al., 2018; Seetharaman et al., 2022). Obviously, society’s heavy reliance on new mineral resources to drive the emerging energy transition entails that the legacy of these waste streams will continue unabated for the near-foreseeable future. The scarcity of high-grade mineral reserves, coupled with deliberate efforts to solve the anthropogenic circularity conundrum, therefore introduces a high level of urgency in the metal extraction industry to develop nascent and more eco-friendly processes and technologies. Integrating circular economy principles based on intentional configurations of circular industrial ecosystems in order to maintain the value of materials and resources in the economy for as long as possible is widely accepted as a practical approach to mitigating the negative externalities imposed by

Three hundred and twenty-eight mines and quarries, representing 36 States, took part in the twelfth yearly accident-prevention contest conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and known as the National Safety Competition. Four underground mines and one open-cut mine (which represents the quarry and open-cut mine group), each the leader in its group, were awarded the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy. Relative standing in the contest" was determined by the number of days lost from accidents in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked. Since 1925, when the National Safety Competition was inaugurated, an increasing interest has been taken in it by mining and quarrying companies as a means of stimulating mine and quarry safety by competition among similar plants. Each participating plant can, on a basis of its standing and record in the contest, determine to what extent its safety program is succeeding or to what extent it needs strengthening. With this information, each company that has a low standing in the contest can intensify its safety-promotion efforts the following year to obtain a lower rate and possibly win the trophy or achieve honorable mention in the competition. Except for 1929, the National Safety Competition of 1936 represented more man-hours of employment than any other year since the yearly contests began.

The transition of mechanical cooling refrigerants from their inception in the 1800s through to the current day has been driven by several factors. Original refrigerants such as sulfur and carbon dioxide, chloromethane and ammonia, whilst effective came with toxicity and/or flammability issues. In 1930 DuPont trademarked a new synthetic refrigerant known as Freon® 12, this development was the introduction of ‘chlorofluorocarbons’ (CFCs).Throughout the 1930s and 1940s additional synthetic refrigerants were developed, namely Freon® 11 and Freon® 22. Due to their non-toxic and non-flammable characteristics, synthetic refrigerants were extensively used for domestic, commercial and industrial applications for the next 60 years.In 1985, one of the first scientific papers suggested a potential mechanism linking CFCs and areduction in the density of the ozone layer. In 1987 the Montreal protocol is ratified; it is the first UN treaty to be ratified by every country on earth. Due to CFC’s ozone depletion potential (ODP), the treaty required the consumption of CFC’s to be reduced by 50 per cent over the next ten years. By 1996 the phase out of CFC’s (Freon® 12) is completed, the phase out of HCFC (Freon® 22) refrigerants comes into effect.On 1 January 2018 the phase down of HFC’s begins. Whilst having zero impact on the ozone layer HFC refrigerants have high global warming potential (GWP). As we transition through the HFC phase down (2018–2035) we are beginning to see the emergence of what some consider to be the fourth synthetic wave, hydrofluoro-olefins (HFO’s). HFO’s and their blends have zero ODP and low GWP’s, ranging from 150 to less than 1. The reduction in GWP with HFO’s typically comes at the expense of flammability, which is not ideal. Each refrigerant has its optimal application, therefor when considering refrigerant choices for mining systems, a complete assessment of the environmental, health and safety, efficiency and commercial impacts should be considered now more than ever.

The Hidden Valley Gold Project is located in a remote and mountainous area of the Morobe Province approximately 30 km south of the township of Bulolo and approximately 90 km south-southwest of the provincial capital, Lae. The Hidden Valley deposit was discovered in 1984 with the nearby Hamata and Kaveroi deposits discovered in 1987 and 1992 respectively. Reserves (Harmony, 2009) at these three deposits are 42.1 million tonnes of ore containing approximately 2.9 million ounces of gold and 45 million ounces of silver. A further 5.4 million ounces of gold and 84 million ounces of silver are in the resources category. The process plant is designed to treat 4.2 million tonnes per year of gold/silver ore extracted by open cut mining methods. Ore is classified into three ore types according to oxidation state: oxide, transition and primary. The silver to gold grade ratio is high for the Hidden Valley and Kaveroi ores, generally in the range 15 - 20:1, and much lower for Hamata, typically 1 - 2:1: Primary ore is the dominant ore type at Hidden Valley with sulfur grades up to about two per cent sulfur. Oxide and transition ores are more prevalent at the Hamata deposit, but its primary ore has up to five per cent sulfur grades. Variable ore types, particularly in the initial years of operation, high silver to gold ratios and limited plant site area, due to the challenging terrain, present the main processing challenges for this project. This paper describes the operating strategies and process development for the main areas of this circuit, highlighting selections of processes and equipment that achieve cost effective, yet flexible solutions to the treatment of ores from these deposits.

"Steel media wear is a major cost component in mineral processing. In the case of existing operating mill, steel media wear prediction can be used to help compare the performance of steel media from different suppliers before completing marked ball tests. It can also be used to investigate how ores from different site of a given mine affect steel media wear. In the case of Greenfield cases, steel media wear prediction can be used to estimate the cost of steel media for a given feasibility study.This paper presents a wear testing and prediction methodology that ties together abrasion wear and corrosion wear testing results through the use of a simplified discrete element charge motion model. The experimentation dimension to this methodology takes samples for steel media, mine site ore and water to determine abrasive and corrosive wear parameters of a given media, ore, water set.The test methodology development is illustrated along with a comparison of wear predictions with observed wear rates in some operating mills. A case study is included that illustrates how this methodology was used to estimate steel media wear performance. The paper closes with a discussion on the use of parts of the experimental methodology to investigate other abrasive wear conditions such as liner wear, paste backfill piping and ore breakage as well as avenues for future test development.INTRODUCTIONThe cost of comminution processes represents a significant part of the overall costs of a mining operation. Grinding media/liner wear alone accounts for 15-25% of the total operating cost. The annual steel grinding media consumption is approximately 2.5 mtpa or 0.3% of total world steel production [Smorgon Steel Group, 2005]. Using an estimated grinding media cost of about US$0.75/kg [Halbe and Smolik, 2002], gives a media cost of over US$1.875 billion per annum. Mining continues to shift towards exploitation of lower grade ores as the higher grades get depleted. These low-grade ores require finer grinding for the liberation of the value minerals, and hence it can be assumed that grinding media consumption will also continue to rise.The Bond abrasion test, dating back to 1963, [Weiss, 1985] is still used to estimate the total mill media wear. This is a purely empirical test based on the ore. From Bond abrasion index tests, it is possible to determine a wear rate using the following function:"

The structure of a comprehensive research project into mine fires study applying the Ventgraph mine fire simulation software, preplanning of escape scenarios and general interaction with rescue responses is outlined. The project has Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funding and also relies on substantial mining company site support. This practical input from mine operators is essential and allows the approach to be introduced in the most creditable way. The effort is built around the introduction of fire simulation computer software to the Australian mining industry and the consequent modelling of fire scenarios in selected different mine layouts. Application of the simulation software package to the changing mine layouts requires experience to achieve realistic outcomes. Most Australian mines of size currently use a ventilation network simulation program. Under the project a small subroutine has been written to transfer the input data from the existing mine ventilation network simulation program to æVentgraphÆ. This has been tested successfully. To understand fire simulation behaviour on the mine ventilation system, it is necessary to understood the possible effects of mine fires on various mine ventilation systems correctly first. Case studies demonstrating the possible effects of fires on some typical Australian coal mine ventilation circuits have been examined. The situation in which there is some gas make at the face and effects with fire have also been developed to emphasise how unstable and dangerous situations may arise. The primary objective of the part of the study described in this paper is to use mine fire simulation software to gain better understanding of how spontaneous combustion initiated fires can interact with the complex ventilation behaviour underground during a substantial fire. It focuses on the simulation of spontaneous combustion sourced heatings that develop into open fires. Further, it examines ventilation behaviour effects of spontaneous combustion initiated pillar fires and examines the difficulties these can be present if a ventilation reversal occurs. It also briefly examines simulation of use of the inertisation to assist in mine recovery. Mine fires are recognised across the world as a major hazard issue. New approaches allowing improvement in understanding their consequences have been developed as an aid in handling this complex area.

The reaction between calcined dolomite and ferrosilicon has been studies with the aim of developing a continuous process for magnesium production. Small-scale tests were made in vacuum retorts similar to those used in the vacuum retort process as developed by Pidgeon (1)2/ and operated during the period of World War II in several Government-owned plants. Factors investigated with respect to the silicon efficiency were the reaction temperature, reaction time, amount of excess dolomite in the charge, and effect of adding sodium silicate to the charge to serve as a binder. Additional laboratory tests were made to study the reaction at elevated temperature but at atmospheric pressure. Silicon efficiencies exceeding 80 percent were found to result when operating in the temperature range from 1,750° to 1,800° C. for periods of 20 to 30 minutes.

This report presents the development of a raw coal concentration sensor for hydro-transport of coal and refuse (rock) from underground mines, and the results of an international test series carried out at the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute in Golden, Colorado, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Hydraulic Transport Research Facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Saskatchewan Research Facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and the Steinkohlenbergbauverein Test Facility in Essen, West Germany. Test results are presented for a three-component sensor and also for the more rugged two-component (all nuclear) sensor.

The United States is rapidly depleting many of its most important minerals and fuels. The first two Annual Reports by the Secretary of the Interior, under the Mining and Minerals Policy Act of 1970, made us acutely aware that the natural resources that enabled this Nation to attain an unprecedented growth in terms of economic well-being, and to set an example of independent strength through the democratic process, are finite. Once they are depleted, large imports will be required. Simultaneously, competition for available supplies, especially of petroleum, is increasing in the expanding European and Japanese industrial communities and in the underdeveloped nations of the world. Even before the crisis of late 1973, the oil-producing nations of the world, principally in the Middle East, but including Canada and Latin America, were recognizing that the worldwide need for crude oil, petroleum products, and natural gas could be translated into an unprecedented economic bargaining position. Thus, the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) raised the price of their crude twice during the first 6 months of 1973. By yearend the energy situation had be-come acute, and it seemed probable that regardless of current political developments, the era of cheap energy was over.

Today, the mining and mineral sectors are being impacted by highly fluctuating supply ? demand, extreme price volatility and tremendous market uncertainty on a world-wide basis. This pattern is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. In particular, large consumers of tonnage quantities of industrial gases (oxygen, nitrogen) all have to make informed investment decisions in this uncertain economic environment. Plant owners ? operators need to carefully examine their current and future industrial gas needs in order to develop the most cost-effective industrial gas plant configuration. This can be done by partnering with an experienced engineering company that offers a complete technology portfolio for producing industrial gases. Ideally, the mineral and engineering companies have to work together as a single team to identify the most efficient and economic plant design. This includes an in-depth assessment of capital and operating costs, in order to deliver an optimal solution, taking plant reliability and process safety into account. It is important to consider all the industrial gas needs at a given manufacturing complex, in conjunction with available utilities and infrastructure to develop the best possible long term solution. Oxygen (O2) requirements include: oxygen enriched and oxy-fuel combustion, smelting and hydrometallurgical operations. Nitrogen (N2) is used for annealing. All of these industrial gas requirements have to be examined at a given site over a long term horizon in a holistic manner. Cryogenic air separation was first practiced at a commercial scale in 1902. Since then, the technology has been constantly refined to reduce cost; and improve reliability and flexibility. Today, using advanced engineering techniques, including proprietary process simulation, and modern fabrication techniques, it is possible to build air separation plants that are both low cost and high quality at the same time. It is important to work with an engineering company that owns a complete portfolio of industrial gas technologies, functional engineering capabilities and a variety of plant solutions. Such a partnership can quickly identify a ?sweet spot? for a given situation. By drawing on experience gained from hundreds of projects, it is possible to quickly optimize a given requirement. In situations where a customer wants a complete solution it may be appropriate to provide an air separation plant on a turn-key basis. This will enable the mining and mineral processor to focus on their core business. By using global procurement and construction capabilities it is possible reduce cost and improve project execution, thereby making industrial gas plant procurement simpler and cheaper for the mining and mineral sector.
