These volumes report on the study initiated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines to develop and apply a methodology to quantitatively assess the probability and potential benefits of technological innovation over the next twenty-five years. The potential was recognized for new technology to solve copper industry problems in the United States. Objectives of the study were to: (1) Develop a methodology to obtain the opinions of mineral experts about future events -their likelihood of occurrence, and, conditional on occurrence, when and to what extent they are likely to occur; (2) Identify, select, and describe potential technological innovations which would have significant impact on copper production; (3) Implement the methodology and obtain the opinions of the mineral experts regarding selected copper technologies; and (4) Analyze the expected future benefits of successful technological innovations :n the copper industry. Although individual technologies are continuously examined throughout the copper 'community', this study is the first known comprehensive forecast of future copper technology. This study is also believed to be unique 1n that it represents the consensus opinion of over sixty expert copper technologists on the expected use of innovative technology in the industry over the next 25 years. This report summarizes the program to develop and construct an improved light-scattering dust monitor (ILSDM). This improved light-scattering dust monitor, which operates on the forward light scattering principle, provides instantaneous measurements of airborne dust concentrations in units of mg/m. The program was divided into two phases. Phase I involved the design of the ILSDM which was reviewed by the Bureau of Mines. Phase II included the fabrication of a prototype ILSDM based upon the design developed during Phase I. After completion, the ILSDM was delivered and demonstrated at the Bureau of Mines. A description of the final ILSDM design, operating instructions, maintenance instructions and recommendations for additional work are also included in this report.

Geologically, as distinct from economically, "porphyry copper (molybdenum, gold, silver, etc.) deposits" might be defined as large, disseminated and/or stock-work occurrences of copper-minerals, generally averaging less than 1 per cent cop-per. They are normally associated with small plutons which range in composition from granite to diorite, although, typically, they consist of quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Circumstantial evidence indicates that these "minor" granitic intrusions may represent the intrusive phases of post-orogenic, calc-alkaline volcanism, this conclusion being suggested by: 1. Texture and grain size. 2. Prevalence of intrusive breccias. 3. Relationship to unconformities and estimated depth of emplacement. 4. Spatial distribution in relation to orogenic zones. 5. Age of mineralization and igneous episodes

Falkie summarized the following formal contribution prepared jointly with Dr R. V. Ramani, describing the work that has been done at the Pennsylvania State University in the development of simulation programs for mine planning over the past 15 years:During the late 50's and early 60's, Monte Carlo simulators were developed to model continuous miner-shuttle car transport systems, track haulage systems, belt conveyor networks, etc. In the mid-60's attention was directed towards deterministic simulation of equipment performance, given the equipment characteristics and the system profile. In the late (10's all these systems (miners, shuttle cars, belts and trains) were integrated together to form a complete coal mine simulator and the program could predict the output potential of the system, given the mining dimensions, method and equipment employed. The actual sequence of coal-cutting operations is entered into the computer through the use of a special programming language which permits any type of mining configuration to be simulated. The simulator is hybrid in nature in that the shuttle cars, trains and belts are simulated deterministically, whereas rate functions with delay frequencies are entered for the continuous mining operations of sumping, shearing, fleeting, cleaning, etc. With suitable manipulation of the data, the program may be applied to all belt or conventional mining sections. Most of these simulators were developed through the assistance of grants from the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and are available from the Coal Research Board of the Commonwealth,"

In November 1989, the U.S. Bureau of Mines sponsored a 2-day conference to stimulate thinking and discussion about changing materials technologies and implications for the Government's materials information programs. On the first day of the conference, speakers provided overviews of developments occurring in each of the major materials groups. Emerging technological developments, applications, economic and national defense significance, intermaterial competition, and potential market growth in advanced plastics, polymer composites, ceramics, metals, and electronic materials were described. In general, the speakers forecast advanced materials market growth rates in excess of overall gross national product (GNP) though high costs will tend to limit growth outside of aerospace, defense, electronics, medical equipment, and other typically high value-added businesses. On the second day, a wide range of speakers representing several facets of the materials community described how advances in materials technology are creating a need for new types of data, statistics, information, and analysis. Reflecting the speakers' broad range of organizational, professional, and personal perspectives, an array of information needs was identified. Most requirements, however, seemed to fall into one of five major categories: Federal materials research activities, material standards, market and economic information, health and safety, and public policy.

This article deals with the effects of high-explosive and nuclear explosions in rock masses. We first highlight the strong influence of geological discontinuities, such as joints and faults, on ground motion characteristics. Then, we briefly introduce the Discrete Element Method, as a new technique for numerical simulations. II is shown to be far superior to continuum-based approaches, when dealing with the dynamics of discontinuous media such as jointed rocks. Finally, we simulate the ground effects from a generic contained nuclear explosion, which bears some similarity to the SHOAL event in granite. This calculation is intended to emphasize the influence of the near-source geology on the distribution of energy, and on the motion at various azimuths in the medium.

In addition to increasing grain boundary area during hot working of austenite, the dislocation substructures create potential sites for nucleation of ferrite both at original grain boundaries and at transition boundaries between deformation bands. This development gives rise to a marked increase in the rates of nucleation, of growth and of transformation to ferrite. The combined net effect is product grain refinement that requires less stringent cooling between finish rolling and coiling; hence determination of the above rates would advance process optimization. The important control parameters are the preheat temperature (degree of homogenization), finishing temperature, strain (accumulation near finishing) and the extent of recrystallization after finishing. These effects vary greatly with steel composition; nevertheless, some general rules have been formulated. Moreover, there is also potential for deformation of the refined ferrite. There are other thermo-mechanical processes such as warm forming of metastable alloy austenite to provide a dense substructure that is carried into the martensite on quenching. In other processes, the austenite may be deformed during cooling through the transformation to develop a dense substructure in the ferrite that is stabilized by fine carbides.

Résumé Cent soixante (160) câbles d'ancrage ont été installés au toit de la rampe à la Mine-laboratoire de CANMET à Val-d'Or, Qué bec, Canada, pour prévenir toute dégradation suite à l'élargissement de la voie de roulage dans un secteur tournant à 180 degrés, communément appelé Virage Santa Barbara. Le roc à cet endroit est de nature bloqueuse et stratifiée, et son épaisseur au toit de la rampe est limitée à environ dix (10) mètres, le tout sous une couche de terrain meuble saturée en permanence. Le soutènement mis en place a été conçu pour former une zone de compression et supporter une strate de roc d?environ quatre (4) mètres d'épaisseur. Les critères de conception et les méthodes d'installation sont présentées. Un contrôle de qualité rigoureux a été effectué au moment de la mise en place du support, notamment en ce qui concerne la mise en tension des câbles eux-mêmes et la qualité du béton utilisé lors de l'injection. Des instruments de mesure seront mis en place sous peu pour dépister tout mouvement éventuel au toit de la rampe. Abstract Design and installation of an active mine ground support using tensioned cables at the Experimental Mine, Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada. One hundred sixty (160) cables were installed at the back of the ramp at the CANMET?s Experimental Mine located in Val-d?Or, Québec, Canada, to prevent any degradation of the ground after the enlargement of the roadway in a sector turning at 180 degrees, usually called Virage Santa Barbara. The nature of the rock mass in this area is blocky and stratified, and its thickness above the ramp does not exceed ten (10) metres. Eight (8) metres of soil, mostly saturated, cover the bedrock on top of the ramp. The ground support was designed to form a compression zone at the back, aimed to carry a strata of rock of around four (4) metres thick. The design criteria and the methods of installation of the ground support are described in the paper. A strict control of the quality of the grout used for injection and the tension placed in the cables was carried out during the installation of the support. Ground monitors will be installed soon, to detect any movement that could take place above the ramp.

The Azores islands are located on a triple junction where the American, African (AFR), and Euroasian (EUR) plates meet. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), oriented N-S, represents two branches of the T; an E-W branch defines the EUR/AFR boundary called the Terceira Rift. The nature and structure of this plate boundary, as well as the dynamics of the interaction of tectonics and volcanism remain unconstrained. The Azores plateau is seated on a mantle domain of anomalously low seismic S-wave velocities, and gravity and geoid anomalies, where the apparent thick crust is thought to relate to larger degrees of melting initiated at greater depths [1]. The cause of these anomalies is controversial but many authors consider the presence of an anomalously hot/wet enriched mantle probably supplied by a plume [2]. The geochemistry of the subaerial and most submarine lavas from the plateau reinforces the plume model beneath the Azores [3-4]. The origin, size and present location of the plume is under debate but an area near Terceira is the favoured plume centre [5]. [ ] SEAFLOOR HYDROTHERMAL SYSTEMS IN THE AZORES AREA (36ºN ? 40ºN) More than 150 active and fossil hydrothermal systems are known in the oceanic seafloor [6]. So far, a large number of algorithms have been developed for the optimization of pit limits, most of which follow deterministic rules. In this paper, a new algorithm is introduced, which follows a probabilistic logic using the Markov chain process. The algorithm is implemented on a transition matrix that corresponds to the 2D conventional economic block model of the mining area. The probability of mining a block is proportional to the desirability it may provide. Applying this algorithm, the probability of mining each block is obtained, and finally, the optimum pit limits are defined as the pit, which provides the highest probability of mining. In order to validate the proposed model, a numerical example is given and the results of the algorithm are compared to those of a dynamic programming algorithm. A 2D analysis of the problem is discussed in this paper. Although dealing with 3D problems requires larger size matrices, the optimization method is the same and the algorithm does not need any smoothing.

NICKEL Plate mountain coincides closely with that portion of the Hedley mining district which is of economic interest. From it has come almost the entire past production, and the active mines of the present epoch, Nickel Plate-Sunnyside and Hedley Mascot, lie in a compact group near its summit. The Hedley district, which is 210 miles due east of Vancouver, is situated in the Okanagan range of southern British Columbia, where this rather gentle uplift is deeply dissected by the canyons of the Similkameen and its tributaries. The region is essentially part of the Interior Plateau of the Province (Figure 1), but is adjacent to easterly elements of the Coast Range. The Similkameen canyon, 4,000 feet in depth and frequently less than 4 miles from rim to rim, traverses the district from northwest to southeast. The deepest and narrowest portion of the canyon lies between Hedley and Keremeos, 18 miles to the southeast. At Hedley, an important tributary, Twenty Mile creek, enters from the north in a bold canyon, making a focus of unusually rugged topography. Nickel Plate mountain occupies the sector to the east of this junction (see Figure 2) and its flanks are ringed by the cliffs of Twenty Mile canyon on the west and by those of the Similkameen canyon on the south. On the east, it slopes gently to the hanging valley of Eighteen Mile creek, and on the north, with only slight loss of elevation, it merges into the moderately hilly surface of the plateau.

IN THE HALF-CENTURY that has passed since the Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910, the research and technologic investigations conducted by the Bureau's scientists, engineers, and other personnel have helped significantly in improving health and safety in the mineral industries and have contributed substantially in conserving the Nation's mineral resources through improved techniques in the mining, treatment, and use of mineral commodities. From Bureau laboratories have come new materials for industry and better methods of extracting and processing minerals and mineral fuels. Bureau safety investigations-complemented by equipment testing and by programs of mine inspection and education-have brought about safer and more healthful working conditions.

"Triton Mining Corporation acquired the rights to Mina El Limon in Nicaragua in 1993 by international bid. The bid included the gold operations at Limon and an exploration concession of approximately 4000 km2. Triton assumed control of operations and exploration in May 1994.The Limon mine is located in west-central Nicaragua, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Managua. The climate is tropical, characterized by a wet season from May through October, and a dry season November through April. Gold at Limon is associated with both banded quartz and silicified breccia veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks, belonging to the lower Coyol Group. Mining is from two open pits and one mechanized underground operation. A second underground mine is currently under development for production during 1997.This paper describes the expansion of the milling facility at El Limon from a nominal capacity of 400 tonnes/day, producing approximately 20,000 ounces of gold annually, to the existing 900 tonne per day mill operation. Engineering of the new mill facility was initiated in September 1994 and construction was completed a year later."

Detailed pit and outcrop mapping of sedimentary rocks and their alteration is providing insights into fluvial processes that operated during deposition of the world-class Yandi channel iron deposit. Five prominent rock units are traceable along the strike of the Yandi deposit and permit correlation of open pits and mesas. These units are the Eastern Clay Horizon (ECH), granule-pebble conglomerate (GPC), Main Ore Zone (MOZ), Basal Denatured Zone (BDZ), and Basal Conglomerate (BCONG). The upper part of the deposit is characterised by a transition from spheroidal grains with well-defined rims and nuclei to larger, subangular grains with poorly developed rims. The distribution of rock types and sedimentary features such as lateral accretion surfaces, channel scours and fills, graded bedding, cross-bedding, reworked horizons, and slumped strata are common at Yandi and indicate deposition in a fluvial system. Bedding is well preserved despite modification of original grain shapes and textures and introduction of secondary silica and alumina in the upper part of the deposit. The high lithic and clay content of the GPC and ECH possibly reflect changes in source area or a hiatus in deposition of the Marillana Pisolite. The MOZ and the BDZ may be the same depositional unit with the latter recording alteration by groundwater and destruction of primary textures and other sedimentary features. The BCONG is a channel lag deposit reworked during deposition of the MOZ. This interpretation is supported by the dominance of basement-derived lithic clasts, the presence of BCONG clasts, the variable thickness of the unit along strike and the presence of BCONG clasts in the BDZ.

The complex organic chemicals in coal differ from those in petroleum mainly by the ratio of carbon atoms to hydrogen atoms; this ratio is about 2 for coal and 1 for petroleum. By changing the ratio, coal can be converted into compounds similar to those found in petroleum. In. very simplified form, omitting here the special conditions required, the paths by which this can be done are: [ ] Part or all of the coal is first gasified by reaction with steam and oxygen, either in a gasifier or while the coal is still in place underground. The resulting gas is mainly hydrogen and carbon monoxide, with impurities that .must be removed before further processing by one of the following routes.

Three electrostatic field sensing proximity warning devices were tested using full-scale cranes and power line systems, a scaled model facility, environmental testing facilities, and theoretical/numerical analysis. The design objective of each device is to assist in safe crane operation near overhead power lines. Several design deficiencies (varying from device to device) were observed, including inadequate overlap in sensitivity ranges, utilization of vacuum tubes and electro-mechanical parts, temperature sensitivity and inaudible alarms. In addition, the testing showed major device limitations including sensitivity to boom orientations and length, polarization dependent responses, and unreliable operation in the presence of multiple power line circuits. The multiple power line circuit problem is intrinsic to electrostatic sensing devices. The remaining deficiencies and limitations are correctable within a state-of-the-art design. This investigation is not intended to evaluate the safety aspects or policy of utilizing proximity warning devices. Rather, the purpose is to determine the performance characteristics of such devices in relation to the criteria specified in proposed MSHA regulation 77.805-4 (i. e., the devices must alarm at a distance of 10 feet from the power line).

This report describes the results of a study of longwall ignition hazards and specific suppression systems to minimize each of the major hazards. The major ignition hazards were identified by conducting a literature search and conversing with knowledgeable individuals in the United States mining industry. Three classes of potential ignition suppression systems are discussed: triggered suppression systems for face ignition, passive suppression systems, and control of ignition hazard in the gob. The triggered suppression systems included protection for the shearer, head and tail gates, welding equipment, and the shearer power cable. Passive systems include improved ventilation and water sprays, and charges in the shearer head. Gob protection can be improved by isolating the gob from working areas and by introducting inerting agents into the gob.

Within the framework of the EU Existing Substance (93/793/EEC) and REACH regulations EC/1907/2006), the copper industry initiated in 2000 a comprehensive Voluntary Risk Assessment of copper and several copper compounds. The Italian Government's Istituto Superiore di Sanità, reviewed the process and reports on behalf of the European Commission. Copper exposure levels to man and the environment from production of copper anodes and cathodes, copper powders and copper chemicals as well as fabrication and use of semi-fabrication products and down stream user products were collected across Europe. Environmental and human health effects data were obtained from literature as well as novel research programs and used to deduct safe threshold
