Since the first IMPC took place in London in 1952 there have been many developments in our understanding of flotation, both in terms of chemical and physical factors influencing the process. Many of these developments have been captured in the proceedings of thirty congresses that have taken place since that first event, as well as in numerous journal papers and special volumes dedicated to flotation. This paper attempts to highlight the individual contributions which many eminent researchers and engineers have made over the past 70 years towards extending our understanding of, especially, the effects of chemical factors on flotation. Although the focus is mainly on more fundamental aspects, it seems that the ‘pull’ of practice has often preceded the ‘push’ from laboratory-based research. As the fundamental understanding of the role of chemical factors on flotation continues to be developed, the major challenge remains to transfer this knowledge effectively into the domain of operations of this profoundly complex process.

The uphole bench extraction strategy at EKJV Management Pty Ltd?s Raleigh Mine, requires simultaneous horizontal and vertical exposure of paste filled stopes. In order to prevent excessive ore dilution, the paste fill must be of sufficient strength to prevent failure during exposure. A numerical modelling methodology has been developed to accurately simulate the initial stress distribution within paste filled stopes, together with the strain-softening loading response of paste fill material. Due to the narrow orebody width and high deformation behaviour of the host rock mass, high closure strains are likely to cause a stiff, brittle fill material to undergo crushing failure upon exposure. The stability of paste fill exposures at the Raleigh Mine was determined by conducting a series of three-dimensional numerical models that incorporate the extraction, filling and exposure sequence of paste filled stopes. Stability charts for 2.5 m and 3.5 m wide simultaneous horizontal and vertical exposures have been derived based upon the numerical modelling results. Implementation of the stability charts has proved successful in limiting the amount of ore dilution from paste fill and provides a basis to optimize paste fill cementation and stability throughout the life of the mine.

This study reviews the sulfur and suliuric acid industries in Eastern United States with emphasis on patterns of consumption and marketing. Output of sulfur in the East is relatively small, and most of the area's sulfur requirements are met by gulf coast Frasch sulfur. Over the long ten recovered elemental sulfur from sour natural gas and petroleum may become the East's major source of sulfur. In 1958 sulfuric acid manufacture consumed over 80 percent of the area's sulfur requirements. The leading uses for sulfuric acid were the manufacture of superphosphates and chemicals. Over the years, unit requirements for sulfur and acid in many major markets have been reduced through improved technology, but new markets always have been developed to keep the industry vital and growing.

This report summarizes a study conducted to determine the state of the art of various rock removal systems and their capabilities. The Objective of the study was to determine if currently manufactured equipment can adequately accomplish rock removal in surface mine reclamation applications. Evaluations of state reclamation regulations, with regard to topsoil rock content, were made to determine the rock removal requirements. The major categories of equipment studied are rock pickers and rock rakes. The impact of rock removal implementation on the reclamation operations is discussed in detail.

The high pressure acid leach process (HPAL) is being commercially used in four plants around the world to treat limonitic laterites. The two major operating costs of the HPAL process are the sulphuric acid and the energy required to heat the pulp to the desired temperature (>240°C). As an alternative to acid injection and steam heating, the in-situ generation of sulphuric acid and heat, produced during the high temperature pressure oxidation of sulphur-bearing materials blended with laterites, has been investigated at the laboratory scale. Various sources of sulphur have been examined, in particular, elemental sulphur, pyrrhotite and a Cu-Ni low-grade bulk concentrate. Under the proper blend ratios, all sulphur sources tested generated sufficient acid to result in equivalent nickel and cobalt dissolutions. A significant improvement to the process economics can result from the addition of sulphur sources containing valuable by-products, such as nickellcobalt andlor precious metals (gold and PGMs). This is especially true in the latter case, when the HPAL can be operated under Platsol conditions (i.e. with the addition of 5-10g/L of chloride), to dissolve the base metals and precious metals simultaneously in the autoclave. Various examples of the application of this concept are presented, together with a brief discussion of its implication on the autoclave design and the downstream processes to recover the values from the leach solutions. INTRODUCTION The city of Alexandria, Egypt is located on the Mediterranean Sea at the northwestern edge of the Nile River delta. The city is approximately 26 km long and 3 km wide bounded by the sea to the north and Lake Maryut to the south. The Alexandria Project is split into 2 phases: phase one included designs to update two existing primary wastewater treatment plants, five pump stations and over 75 km of sewer pipe, 18 km o f which is tunneled, (1500mm to 2750mm ID pipe). Currently the pipeline and pump stations are under construction. Phase two of the project includes expanding both the capacity of the treatment plants and the limits of the collection system. Included in this system expansion is the 3.5 km long, 2250mm ID Central Zone Conveyance, which is the subject of this paper. The project is under the direction of The Alexandria General Organization for Sanitary Drainage (AGOSD). It is an USAID funded joint venture of two American firms, CH2M - Hill and Metcalf & Eddy who share equally the major portion of the work and two Egyptian firms, Engineering Consultants Group (ECG) and Wairth Associates who are also partners. The venture, which is both design and construction management, worked under the name Wastewater Consultants Group, WWCG. Michael Gilbert was Chief o f the Geotechnical Department and Project Engineer for the Central Zone Conveyance. Gennaro Avolio was Geotechnical Exploration Manager for the Alexandria Wastewater Project.

"Gondwana coal deposits are widespread and are known to occur in four continents. They are present in Brazil, India, South Africa, and Australia. From coal petrographic examinations and a detailed literature survey, it is interpreted that Gondwana coals are present also in Canada and the United States. Laurasia, or Northern Hemisphere, coals occur in the United States, Canada, and Europe. They form the main coal producing fields of the world. Megascopically, Gondwana coals have a uniform, micro-banded appearance, with a dull lustre; Laurasian coals are bright and have distinct bands of vitrain and clarain. Petrographically, Gondwana coals, compared to Laurasian coals, are lower in vitrinite, but higher in inertinite, particularly in semifusinite. Mineral matter averages 16% in Gondwana coals and 5.7% in Northern Hemisphere coals.Gondwana coals are characterized by thick seams that terminate through lithification (Versteinerung), whereby coal passes laterally into shale. Laurasian coal seams are thinner and terminate by splitting and digitation.Vitrinite/inertinite ratio data indicate deposition of the Gondwana coals in dry marshes under strong oxidizing conditions. The Laurasian coals originated in wet marshes in a reducing environment. As deduced from fossil plants and fossil spores, temperate and near arctic conditions apply for the Gondwana coals. A tropical and subtropical climate is indicated for the Laurasian deposits. The Gondwana coals were formed under allochthonous conditions. They derived from vegetation that drifted into the peat bogs. The Laurasian coals are autochthonous and originated from vegetation that grew and was buried in the peat bogs. The Gondwana coals are Late Carboniferous and Early Permian. The Laurasian coals are entirely Late Carboniferous."

The Bureau of Mines conducted large-scale laboratory copper ore leaching tests to enable improving copper recovery from large dump-leaching operations. This was done by comparing leaching progress when copper was recovered from recycled leach liquor either by cementation or by solvent extraction. Copper was leached from 7-ton ore samples at room temperature using pH 2 ferric sulfate solutions. With are samples containing 11 percent minus 0.5-inch fines, no marked advantage in using either of the copper recovery methods was evident after 416 days of leaching. With ore containing 32 percent minus 0.5-inch fines, solvent extraction of copper was advantageous in that 60 percent of the copper was extracted after 568 days, whereas only 48 percent of the copper was extracted when cementation was used. Less acid was consumed during leaching when solvent extraction, rather than cementation, was used for copper recovery. Iron, contributed by cementation with scrap iron, plugged the ore bed containing 32 percent fines.

A fluidized countercurrent ion-exchange system was developed, operated, and evaluated by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines. The system consisted of integrated multiple-compartment absorption and elution columns in which the solution flows were continuous except for short periods when resin increments were withdrawn. The exchange of uranyl carbonate between a simulated in situ uranium leach liquor and a strong-base ion-exchange resin together with the subsequent elution with an ammonium chloride solution was studied. The effects of the number of sections, section height, amount of resin withdrawal, solution flow rate, and column diameter were investigated. The kinetic and equilibrium relationships for the absorption and elution steps were also examined. The experimental data indicate a strong interdependence between variables. Solution retention time appears to be a major limiting variable in the absorption process, while resin residence time is the determining factor in the elution process. The column was efficient over a range of conditions, but close control was needed for optimum operation.

The objective of this five year study was to investigate the means of establishing non-polluted ground-water and root zone systems in areas where surface mining intercepts physiochemically unsuitable overburden materials. Overburden may need to be sampled on a 60 m grid in order to delineate materials unsuitable for reclamation and to accurately implement selective handling operations. Unsuitable overburden materials were buried successfully in a dragline operation with a minimum of delays, but costs were increased 12 to 53%. After three years the buried material remains above the reestablished aquifer and below the root zone. Construction of a clay cap over the buried material may not be required in semiarid environments. It was shown that some unsuitable overburden materials do not have to be special handled. When inhibitory material constituted <5% of the total overburden volume, such material was essentially not detectable in the resultant spoil pile due to mixing/dilution processes. When inhibitory material exceeded 15% of the overburden volume it was always found in the resultant spoil pile, generally with a smaller extent, indicating partial dilution. At least a portion of the postmine aquifer had hydraulic conductivity rates lower than the premine system, indicating the reestablished aquifer may, in part, conduct ground water very slowly. Postmine ground-water chemical quality in spoil materials had poorer quality compared to premine ground water.

Hercules cribs make use of timber loaded parallel and perpendicular to the grain. Maximum use is made of the orthotropic properties of timber resulting in crib- having superior strength, high initial stiffness and controlled post yield deformations. Blocks and timbers can be combined in many different ways resulting in thousands of different geometries. Each geometry has a specific combination of block on block, timber on timber and block on timber contact area which results in a unique performance. Each crib can be fingerprinted by defining four parameters relating to its load/deformation curve. If the geometry is known, the performance can be predicted with a high degree of accuracy. If the mine support requirements are known, the crib geometries can be designed which met theme requirements in the most cost effective manner Hercules cribs come closest to satisfying mine support requirements. Due to the flexibility of the concept and their superior strength, they can be employed in most mining situations to enhance safety, improve productivity, reduce working costs or improve profitability.

Constraints on the mineral industry are best treated as issues that have to be understood and managed in partnership rather than in conflict with communities. TheZapopan development at Mt Todd in Australia and the Martha Hill development at Waihi in New Zealand are but two of many recent successful examples at the local level. &nbsp; However, at the national level, the issues are more complex and more difficult to resolve because the most influential stakeholders are now the urban electorates and governments defer to their perceptions when making decisions and policy. In the developed countries, government policies for the development of mineral resources have been progressively eroded since the early 1970s. At the same time policies for the environment and for native land rights have generally been carried out in a way that has reduced access to minerals and increased the cost and risks for prospectors and developers (Hancock, 1995). Since the end of the Cold War, the lesser developed countries (LDCs) have introduced policies to attract investment in their mineral resources that remained undeveloped under previous unstable or hostile regimes. The increased attraction of these LDCs and the decreased attraction of the developed countries has caused many Australian and North American companies to outlay increasing proportions of their budgets and capital investment in the LDCs. &nbsp; Significantly, LDC policies for environment protection do not discourage exploration and mine development, Surveys of the relative appeal of the LDCs and the traditional mining countries of the developed world, rate Chile, Argentina and Indonesia ahead of Australia and Canada in terms of risk, delays and ease of doing business (Australian Mining Monthly, February 1994).

Nickel laterite deposits are typically formed from tropically weathered mafic-ultramafic complexes. The resulting nickel concentration is found within soil horizons and is mineable with regular dozer units. At the time of mining, digging elevations are needed at selective mining units (SMUs). Moreover, for mine planning, the costs due to dilution and lost ore require mining elevations to be specified. A conditional simulation approach is used to calculate ?optimum? SMU mining elevations. Multiple realizations of the ore base surface are simulated. For a single bottom surface realization, dilution and lost ore costs are calculated over the entire vertical extent of each SMU. The optimum mining elevation is the elevation where the lowest summed cost of ?accepting dilution? and ?wasting ore? occurs. The reported SMU dilution is the cost of mining the volume of waste located below the bottom surface and above the optimum mining elevation and the reported SMU lost ore is the cost of not mining the volume of ore above the bottom surface and below the optimum mining elevation. For all ore bottom surface realizations, optimum SMU mining elevations and their associated dilution and lost ore costs are calculated and compiled to represent production uncertainty.

FirstMiss Gold installed a supervisory control system based on Pavilion Technology&apos;s Process Insights neural network software and Oil System&apos;s PI data historian. The primary goal of the system was to control the acid preconditioning circuit. However, our first successful control loop was on the limestone feed rate to the neutralization circuit. The information gained by modeling these circuits and the better control provided by the system has resulted in reagent savings of over $80,000 per month.

"Column flotation has been successfully applied to iron ore concentration since the 1980s with the goal of reducing silica content and allowing for the efficient production of pellet feed. Since then, columns have been widely used in iron ore processing due to: their lower capital and operational costs when compared to conventional cells their ability to generate higher concentrate grades and recoveries.Currently, more than 100 columns have been installed within Brazilian iron ore processing circuits for rougher, cleaner and scavenger duties. Despite it being a well-established approach, several technological advances have improved column design, accessories and performance. "SYNOPSISA discussion of the importance of flotation rate in the analysis of mineral flotation is presented. In particular, the highly interactive nature of the flotation ""system"" is emphasized where there are components of chemistry, equipment, and operating conditions simultaneously involved. It is further shown that: 1) flotation rate must be measured in order to economically optimize the performance of an industrial flotation circuit, 2) that consistent patterns exist in both flotation rate and equilibrium recovery when changing various settings of the system components, 3) that knowledge of these patterns is necessary in order to avoid making system changes that are either self-compensating or dramatically re-enforcing in some particular aspect of performance, and 4) the rate related role of the chemistry component (e.g.frothers and collectors) is often much bigger than is sometimes realized (especially in a negative sense involving overdosing of reagents). INTRODUCTIONFroth flotation is widely usedl-6 in mineral beneficiation processes as a method for separating different types of finely divided solids present in a liquid (usually aqueous) suspension. The approach is based on the contacting of solids with upward moving air bubbles in an agitated vessel where the solids are exposed to chemicals (collectors) which create a condition favoring the attachment of a certain portion of the solids to the air bubbles. This selected portion is then removed in a froth stabilized by chemicals (frothers) and subsequently recovered from the flotation vessel. Depending on the settings of the various components of the flotation ""system"" (see Figure 1) it is possible to achieve a wide range of flotation performance."

By 1980, the U.S. mining community had reached a broad consensus regarding coal pillar design. The pillar load could be estimated from tributary area theory, and the pillar strength from empirical formulas and laboratory coal strength testing. Then the growth of longwall mining required new thinking. Recently, powerful design methods have emerged from analysis of large data bases of real-world pillar successes and failures. These include the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), the Mark-Bieniawski rectangular pillar strength formula, and guidelines for preventing massive pillar collapses. Sophisticated numerical models have also helped transform the pillar design landscape. In the process, our understanding of pillar mechanics has been greatly enriched.
