The coal mining industry in the western United States is seeing the same boom as the rest of the country and the world. Most coal mines in the West are operating flat out as the nation’s appetite for energy continues to grow. And many of the coal mines have either increased their production capacities or are in the process of doing so. However, transportation issues along with environmental restrictions are keeping many mines from expanding even further. Some coal companies held off on further expansion plans until Congress and President Bush could agree on a national energy policy, one that recognizes coal as the nation’s leading source of electricity. In August, Congress passed and the president signed into law such a measure (see Washington Survey, page 7). The legislation includes research funding for clean coal technologies. So western and eastern coal could become even more important in the national energy picture. This is particularly true as supplies of natural gas diminish and the price of oil continues to increase.

Introduction Tanco History Tanco is sometimes known as the Bernic Lake Mine. It is located about 180 km east-northeast of Winnipeg close to the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. Tanco operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity and centrifugal concentration methods along with a flotation process which recovers ultra-fine tantalum. All tantalum concentrates are shipped to Cabot Supermetals, Boyertown, Pa., for the production of tantalum chemicals and metals. Tanco also produces lithium products from spodumene ore. The lithium concentrates from Tanco are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock to the on-site chemical plant dedicated to the production of cesium formate, a high density drilling fluid. Tantalum milling operations commenced in 1969. In the early years of the operation, feed grades were three to four times as high as they are today. Coarse-grained tantalum mineralization with complete tantalum liberation at sizes of 300 µm allowed for easy recovery with conventional equipment such as spirals and shaking tables. Over the years, the process and feed material to the plant have drastically changed. Due to drastically reduced liberation sizes, efforts have been made to try to recover as much of the liberated particles as possible in order to maintain acceptable recoveries.

Foreword Following the explosion in the Hillcrest mine, which occurred in the evening of Sunday, September 19th, 1926, and in which two men lost their lives, the writer was invited by the Hon. J.E. Brownlee, Premier of Alberta, to conduct an investigation into the causes of the disaster, and to make such recommendations as seemed advisable with a view to minimizing as far as possible the chance of future explosions in this and similar Alberta coal mines. Accordingly, the mine was visited, and extensive investigations were made underground on October 21st, 2.2.nd, and 25th, in company with Mr. John T. Stirling, Chief Inspector of Mines for Alberta, Mr. Moses Johnson, District Inspector for the Crowsnest Pass District, Mr. J as. A. Richards, Inspector of Mines, Edmonton, and also Mr. Thomas Davies, manager, and other officials of the Hillcrest mine. Hearings of the coroner's inquest were also attended on October 20th and 23rd, when testimony regarding the explosion was given by various witnesses. The following paper summarizes my general observations in tracing the place of origin of the explosion, and my efforts to determine the cause of ignition. Certain recommendations arc also made, and the writer invites discussion on these and the other matters dealt with in the paper.

Over 1500 literature citations related to diesel exhaust sampling and analysis were obtained as a result of both computer and manual searches of nine data bases. Abstracts and hard copies of relevant citations were reviewed and those considered appropriate for evaluation were included in a bibliography. Based on the literature collected, available sampling and analysis methods for the following diesel exhaust contaminants were evaluated: CO, CO2, NO, NO2, Hydrocarbons, Particulates, PNA, S04, Oxygenates Emphasis was given to both laboratory and field methods for these species. Methods were evaluated on the basis of sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy and reliability and a selected list of preferred methods was developed for each compound/ class. The selected methods were additionally evaluated through communication with current investigators. Sampling and analysis methods for all compounds except CO and CO2 were observed to have some unreliability. Recommendations were made for future research to develop, improve, and validate methods.

Typically, large volumes of data are collected during geotechnical investigations for mining projects but rarely is this done in a comprehensive manner that enables all aspects of the geotechnical environment to be evaluated. A geotechnical core logging process has been developed to record mechanical and structural properties of the rock mass. The method enables data for a wide range of rock properties and geotechnically significant major structures to be collected including rock strength, joint surface condition, fracture frequency and fracture orientation. The logging method is unique in that sufficient data is collected to enable the independent determination of all the major rock mass classification systems including rock mass rating (RMR), (Bieniawski 1976, 1989; Laubscher, 1990) Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) tunnelling quality index (Q) (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) and geological strength index (GSI) (Hoek, Kaiser and Bawden, 1995). The logging system has been specifically developed to allow better and more precise appreciation of rock mass and structural conditions across the project area thereby optimising the use and application of the available geotechnical data and improving confidence in the outcomes of geotechnical investigations. This paper describes the core logging process with case examples showing how the logged data can be used for underground and open pit mine design.

"INTRODUCTION The injection of gas into the McClosky limestone in the adjoining, Griffin and New Harmony field in Indiana and Illinois and resulting increases in oil and gas production from this zone ore described in this report.Since 1911, the use of compressed air or as to increase oil production by supplementing natural reservoir energy has been widely adopted, and has resulted in the recovery of much additional oil, which otherwise would have been left underground. In many of the newer oil fields, including Griffin and New Harmony, a part of the compressed residue gas from natural gasoline plants is returned to the reservoir as a secondary method to increase oil and gasoline production. Part of the injected gas is stored underground for future use.By presenting data on many secondary recovery operations in a series of reports 5-9/ the Bureau of Mines has sought to stimulate interest in secondary recovery as a means of increasing oil recovery and current oil production for wartime needs. Most of the elder fields in the United States produce oil from sandstone reservoirs, and probably more than 90 percent of secondary recovery operations have been developed in oil bearing sandstones. During recent years, the volume of oil obtained by primary methods from limestone reservoirs has increased steadily, but as yet little has been done to recover, by secondary means,,the large volumes of oil left in limestone reservoirs when primary methods production are no longer profitable. Because of inherent differences in the origin and nature of the pore spaces between sandstones and limestones and because of differences in permeability and fluid content, secondary recovery methods, which are successful in sandstone-reservoirs, are not always applicable to limestones. Not much he been written concerning secondary recovery operations in limestone reservoirs, and few data are available to assist operators in developing such secondary recovery projects."

Asbestos fibers are highly fibrous silicate fibers that are distinguished by having a large aspect (length to diameter) ratio and are crystallized in an asbestiform habit that causes them to separate into very thin fibers or fibrils. These fibers are distinct from nonasbestiform cleavage fragments and may appear as thick, short fibers which break along cleavage planes without the high strength and flexibility of asbestiform fibers. Since cleavage fragments of respirable dimensions have generally proven nonpathogenic in animal studies, little data exists on assessing well-characterized preparations of cleavage fragments in in vitro models. The available studies show that cleavage fragments are less bioreactive and cytotoxic than asbestiform fibers. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. The application of this study is to use helical anchors as a foundation system for small wind tower (1 ? 10 kW) guyed cables. Helical anchors are currently used to anchor guyed cables of telecommunication and electric towers. However, the increased dynamic vibrations a wind turbine adds to the tower and foundation system under working loads, as well as extreme environmental conditions (e.g., straight line winds, ice load or sudden furling shocks), require additional knowledge about the behavior of helical anchors. These field conditions were simulated in this study by instrumenting a working tower with load cells and 3-axis accelerometers to gather data on wind speed and tower response. These tower responses were then transmitted to the helical anchors through an extensive, large-scale testing program that included monitoring the performance of the helical anchor foundation under dynamic loads, subject to natural variations in both wind regimes, precipitation (water level) and variations in helical anchor geometry. This paper specifically discusses the effects of helical anchor geometry on helical anchor performance under long-term dynamic loads.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities, and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations, or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life, and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training. Once every three years the eyes of the construction and mining industry?s turn to Munich, Germany for the bauma trade fair and exhibition. From April 19-25, Messe München International (MMI) will host the 29th edition of this massive show that, despite the recent recession and global financial struggles, has grown yet again. The show, which is completely booked, will take place on a record 555,000 m2 (5.9 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. More than 3,000 exhibitors are expected to make use of this event. To prepare for the show that highlights some of the largest and most impressive construction and mining equipment in the world, Messe München began working months in advance on getting the infrastructure on the open-air site ready, in time for the arrival of the gigantic machinery exhibits, which started to arrive in March. Part of the preparations include a new entrance at the northwest corner of the exhibition center that was built to regulate visitor flow better. This should help with bauma considering that in 2007 more than 500,000 visitors passed through the gates. ?Although in 2010 the construction machinery sector in many markets worldwide will be recovering only slowly from the recession, we are pleased to report that we are seeing strong demand for exhibition space. This shows that exhibitors regard participation in the world?s leading trade fair bauma as a must, although many are at present having to make cuts in their advertising and trade-fair budgets. We have been particularly surprised by the strong demand for space from exhibitors from markets like China, India and Turkey. The fair is fully booked and many more companies are on the waiting list,? said Eugen Egetenmeir, managing director of Messe München. More than 50 percent of the exhibitors at bauma 2010 come from countries outside of Germany. While the show?s primary focus is on the construction section, it is not as if the mining sector will be difficult to find. With some of the largest equipment in world on display in section C2 (Fig. 1), the mining industry is sure to be well-represented.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries to be developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The company has since committed US$1.5 billion to construct the mine, mill and associated facilities. The first of two 50-kt/d (55,000-stpd) mill and flotation lines is currently being commissioned while engineering and construction continues on the second line. A high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) will ultimately take total throughput to 130 kt/d (142,000 stpd). The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level and it is situated in a wide east-west valley. Except for one small outcrop (Peñasquito), the area is covered by up to 30 m (98 ft) of alluvium.

WHEN making comparisons of the efficiencies of different grinding and crushing machines it is desirable to be able to estimate the work actually done in crushing the ore from a given size of feed to a given size of product, the screen analysis of both feed and product being determined. Messrs. Klug and Taylor, in a paper on this subject, published in the monthly journal of the Chamber of Mines of WA, 31st January, 1906, have described a method adopted by them in calculations made in connection with a series of trials of grinding pans. Their methOd is based upon the assumption that if a quantity Q of material consisting of particles of average diameter x be crushed down until the average diameter of the particles is y, then the work done in grinding is proportional to Q x. There is no theoretical basis for this assumption that the writer is aware of, and it does not appear to satisfy the fundamental conditions necessary. If the material be further crushed until the diameter 2 becomes Z, the additional work done is measured. The work done in crushing from diameter x to diameter Z in one operation is proportional to Q x:, and therefore we ought to have zx2 y2 x2 Q-+Q-=Q-. y2 Z2 Z2But these expressions are not in general equal to one another. One of the most important requirements to be met by any coal producer is delivery of size consists tailored to specific applications. Generally these specifications include a minimum as well as a maximum size limit. The customers of a major Indiana coal producer noticed that some shipments of sized coal contained a large proportion of undersize pieces. Also, in these shipments, the pieces which remained within the specified limits were cracked and, when handled, crumbled readily. The producer, certain that these shipments had been properly sized at the tipple, suspected that degradation had occurred in transit. The Indiana Geological Survey was requested to examine the coal from one of these shipments to attempt to determine the cause of breakage. Two basic facts about coal and coal seams led to the employment of petrographic techniques in this investigation. First, all coal seams consist of accumulations of diverse organic and inorganic constituents; and second, most coal breakage, either desirable or undesirable, can be attributed to the inherent weakness of some of these constituents or to poor adhesion between certain constituents. Analyses of degraded coal Sampling: Samples were secured from 2 stock piles of 2-by 4-inch coal in a dealer's yard. The coal in both piles had received the same treatment from mining to storage, although it had been mined and shipped on two different days. The size consist of one pile, however, appeared smaller than that of the other. The sample from the degraded pile is referred to as the slack sample, and the other is called the unslack sample. Size analyses: In order to determine the actual size consist, the samples were screened, with a minimum of rough handling, on square 2-inch, 1-inch, 1/2-inch, and 12-mesh screens. It is assumed that 100 percent of the 2-by 4-inch coal is retained on a 2-inch round screen at the tipple. Analyses of several loads at the tipple indicate that approximately 26 percent of the 2- by 4-inch coal, 100 percent of which was assumed held on a 2-inch round screen, passed through a 2-inch square screen. Twenty-six percent may be taken as the normal difference between round and square screens. Results of the analyses of stockpile coal are shown in Table 1. Cumulative percent versus size are plotted on a Rosin-Rammler chart as Figure 1. Both samples approximately follow normal size distribution; this indicates that breakage is not size preferential and also that the samples are representative of the stockpiles. Although both samples exhibit the same general size distribution, the median size of the slack sample is considerably smaller than that of the unslack sample. Fifty-five percent of the unslack sample was undersize (29 percent greater than the normal 26 percent difference), and 83 percent of the slack sample was undersize (57 percent greater than the normal 26 percent difference). Both piles contained a greater percentage than normal of undersize coal; this indicates that they were both affected by degradation, but to a different degree. The Dugald River zinc-lead deposit is located 60 km northwest of Cloncurry. It was discovered prior to 1881, and since 1937, has been the subject of several drilling programmcs which have outlined a resource potential of 60 million tonnes grading 10 per cent zinc, 1 per cent lead, and 30 g/t silver.The deposit is a classical example of stratiform zinc lead mineralization in a black shale host. It occurs within a restricted clastic sedimentary basin within the Corella Formation of Carpentarian (Middle Proterozoic) age. Sabkha, lacustrine and fluvial sedimentary environments have been recognized within this basin. Each environment is characterized by suites of evaporite mineral pseudomorphs, after both shortite and gypsum, indicating that both alkaline and hypersaline environments prevailed at different times during basin evolution. The Dugald Slates which host the zinc-·lead mineralization are lacustrine in origin. Thin Mount Isa-type K-rich tuffite beds occur in the Dugald Slates and in the sabkha sequences.The basin as a whole appears not 10 have been marine, and 10 have had strong tectonic controls on its depositional history.The mineral deposit itself is conformable within the Dugald Slates and many primary sedimentary and soft-sediment deformation structures are preserved. It has a strike length of 2 km, average width of 10 m, and a westerly dip of 50-80 . Drilling suggests continuity to 1000 m vertical depth. The predominant sulphides are pyrrhotite, pyrite, sphalerite and galena in graphitic slate and quartz-carbonate ganguc. Anomalous concentrations of barium, manganese, cadmium, mercury and antimony are present in the ore.The deposit crops out over a distance of 2 km as a gossan ranging from 5-15 m in width. There is a striking vegetation anomaly over the gossanous outcrops. The gossan is enriched in lead, silver, antimony, barium, titaniulll, silica and iron, with respect to the primary mineralization. The depth of total oxidation reaches about 20 m.Cieochemical and geophysical test surveys over the deposit give pronounced anomalies.

Sustainability of plant operations in a rapidly changing mining environment requires a well-trained workforce to ensure smooth running of operations. To ensure availability of trained labor, Mopani Copper Mines PLC set up a training facility in 2013. The school offers training in Engineering, Mining and Process. The engineering section enrolls grade 12 school leavers for artisan training. Mining section offers comprehensive safety induction program to employees and contractors to meet the Mopani zero tolerance accidents safety policy. The process training section offers advanced training programs for plant operating personnel and university graduates. The program includes needs analysis, theoretical metallurgical modules, practical plant training and e-learning modules. The school also offers assaying and sampling courses. All the above courses are extended to individuals and other mining houses outside Mopani wishing to have their personnel trained. The Mopani sustainable development academy ensures that contractors engaged on the Mopani sites are fully registered, comply with all relevant regulations and have undergone induction program before they can be allowed to work on the mine. INTRODUCTION “Sustainable operation of the mining industry requires a continuous supply of trained human resources” (Kapobe et al., 2018). The publication by the Asian Development Bank (2014) argued that there was a mismatch between the demand for high-level skills and the oversupply of low-level skills. Globally, the mining industry requires continued supply of skilled manpower for its complex operations and long term projects whose sustainability is absolutely necessary. Implementation of newer technologies in plant operations to ensure cost effective and efficient operations requires trained and skilled labor at various levels to handle ever-changing challenges. Dutz (2007:152–156) made three recommendations for Building Worker and Management Skills in India: Strengthen enterprise - based training. The government should help ensure that the benefits of in- service training are widely recognized by enterprises, while simultaneously providing strong financial incentives Improve vocational training - Vocational education and training systems have been unsuccessful in preparing graduates to meet market needs, particularly because of a lack of interaction with industry. Public and private vocational education and training providers should be strengthened to make them more responsive to industry demands. Curricula should be updated to reflect modern technologies. Strengthen business, management education, management of research and commercialization - business and management education should be strengthened through public-private partnerships. Innovative management courses should be introduced. Although these recommendations were made for India, they also apply to Zambia and other low and medium income nations.

At the inception of the gold-mining industry at Kalgoorlie the small supply of firewood required for steaming purposes was naturally all drawn from the limited local areas, which promised soon to become denuded. With the advent of the railway toKalgoorlie came the ever increasing machinery and steam power, and the accompanying demand for firewood so increased that the fuel contractors began their operations, by following the timber belts along the Yilgarn railway line, and graduallygetting further westward, until at present we find them as far as Woolgangie, 63 miles from Kalgoorlie, and with the regular railway rates, I0. per ton per mile, this maybe considered the limit of payable timber at current rates. Although in the early days the reserve of timber along the railway line must have appeared as incalculable and inexhaustible as that of coal did in Europe a couple of centurys ago, the day is now near us when even this source will fail to meet the demands made upon it, for, although a good two years' supply is available or the areas under the axe, yet it is time to look ahead and find from whence the future supplies are to be drawn. Along the railways we find the zone of felling operations limited for want ofcommunication, and only such portions of the forests as are within six or seven miles of the railway come under the axe at present while virgin forests to the rear remain practically unexploited. It is only in the course of the past sixteen months that the firewood industry has developed...

There has been much debate in recent years regarding the number of Geology (Earth Science) graduates produced in Australia. The key variable has commonly been assumed to be the placement of graduates in the mineral and petroleum industries. Although not wishing to deny the importance of this element, we contend that Geoscience studies should be given to a wider variety of graduates. The essence is to make students and future citizens more environmentally aware. INTRODUCTION Geoscience is fundamental to exploration and to the well-being of the minerals industry and hence the Australian economy. The value of mineral primary products exports for the past three years has been: 1895 $15.3 billion 1986 $14.8 billion 1987 $16.3 billion (Data source: B.M.R) The mining industry supplies about 40% of Australia's export earnings. However the overall value of Geoscience to the Australian economy is much greater. At the opening of the ANZAAS conference in Townsville during May 1987, Sir Bruce Watson , Chairman of the Mt. Isa Mines Ltd., made a plea for a national re-examination of the way science is taught in secondary schools. In particular he emphasized the point that the community should be more aware of the importance of Geoscience and the value of the mining industry to Australia.

A case study is presented on the optimization of cable bolting patterns in cut-and-fill stopes at the Chikla Mine, MOIL, India. Rock mass characterization, using Bieniawski’s RMR and Barton’s Q, indicated that the stopes lie in the “no supports required” to “spot bolting required” support categories. In contrast, the current practice of cable bolting in a 2.0 m by 2.0 m grid pattern for stope widths less than 12 m displays different results. Numerical modelling results are in line with the rock mass characterization study. It can be affirmed, as well, that no cable is carrying rock loads greater than 5 t. This fact is derived from observational behaviour of the crown pillar of an experimental stope with open stoping operations and hanging cables in the cut-and-fill stopes of the mine. An increase in the cable bolting grid spacing is, hence, recommended for implementation by mine management, based on the study described in subsequent sections. It is also suggested that the mine adopt the open stoping method, provided results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program in an experimental stope with a cable bolting grid of 2.5 m square are favourable.

Mill crushing drive systems are essential to cement producers. With the increased emphasis on operating efficiency, it is vital that these systems be dependable and reliable. No one needs the costs or headaches associated with unscheduled downtime or inefficient machinery operation. A reliable drive system starts with the proper selection of the ring, or girth, gear and continues through proper maintenance. Ideally, selecting the right girth gear brings together the gear manufacturer, the system designer and the end user. The gear manufacturer must know the details of the application, the demands that will be placed on the gear and the nature of the equipment to be driven. Similarly, the user and the system designer must be familiar with the variables that affect gear drive performance and service. For example, an application that places a torque load on the drive in excess of its rated capacity will result in gear tooth distress and, in severe cases, breakage.

Keywords: co-generation, furnace CO-gas cleaning, disintegrator scrubber, Theisen In a closed, electric, reduction furnace, no oxygen enters the furnace from the surrounding environment. The off-gases are thus not ?burnt? and therefore contain a considerable amount of CO and H2. Traditionally these gases have been captured and burnt in a flare stack. Recent developments have led operators of such furnaces to revise this strategy and to consider utilising these gases as a fuel for gas-fired generator sets to produce electricity, thus becoming more energy efficient. On 31 March 2010 the new emission standards, in accordance with the Air Quality Act, Act 39 of 2004, were promulgated. The minimum emission standards according to the act require that the particulate matter emissions from the primary fume-capture systems on closed furnaces for ?new plants? in ferroalloy and calcium carbide production not exceed 50 mg/Nm³ and 25 mg/Nm³, respectively. By implementing co-generation, the producer automatically complies with the new environmental emission standards for an off-gas. As much as 30% of the electrical power cost, which is set to double in the near future, can be saved by partly generating one?s own electrical power. In December 2010, the National Treasury published a discussion paper for public comment, one entitled ?Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: The carbon tax option?. Irrespective of how the tax is finally implemented, it will result in an increase of production costs in affected industries. This paper focuses on the characteristics of a furnace-off-gas cleaning system for closed ferroalloy smelters, characteristics that meet the requirements of both reducing solid-matter emissions and operating a safe and reliable gas plant.
