A laboratory size solvent extraction apparatus has been constructed, which incorp- orates three stages of countercurrent extraction, followed by two stages of counter- current stripping. The model uses a gravity flow system from one stage to another and air lift pumps to recirculate organic and aqueous phases. A novel pump/mixer system is used to transfer solutions from the mixer compartments to the settler compartments. The model has proven valuable in the teaching of solvent extraction principles.

"Timing and charge sequence are very important for optimized blast design. Traditional nonelectricinitiation systems have moved the industry toward a system of delays consisting of hole-to-hole androw-to-row timing sequences that mimic the application of nonelectric surface delays or dual delayinitiator systems that have been prevalent in the blasting industry for many years. The increasedutilization of electronic detonators allows for the use of Regular Rhythmic Timing (RRT) utilizing onlyone delay between charges and a selected charge firing sequence. The hole to hole and row to row (HHRR) timing method has been utilized for blasting optimization and allows for simplistic changes to the tie in phase of the blasting sequence. When using this traditional timing methodology, for some specific cases related to the number holes and rows, crowding occurs in the delay between charges with subsequent increase in the peak particle velocity (PPV) produced by the blast. This is in contrast to RRT where the timing between the delays remains constant."

The new Roasting Facility at Barrick’s Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, U.S.A. was developed to process 12,000 tons per day of refractory gold ore. The process consists of crushing, dry grinding, roasting, extensive gas purification, calcine quenching and leaching in the presence of activated carbon. The new plant is integrated into the existing Goldstrike facility, treating ore from both open pit and underground sources. The process design, procurement, construction and commissioning of the Roaster facility was performed successfully over a 3½ year period with peaks of 400 engineering personnel and 950 construction personnel supporting the project. The US$330,000,000 project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. The commissioning was well planned and proceeded smoothly through a rapid start-up to achieve all primary goals within three months of the start of processing of ore.

A mining company has entered into contractual commitments to supply certain quantities of its product to clients in each time period. Failure to fulfil its obligations would damage its reputation as a reliable supplier. The planned production would normally be sufficient unless major problems such as highwall failures, roof falls, natural disaster, or strikes that interrupt production or delays in obtaining environmental permits, occur. To overcome these difficulties, the company may be able to obtain more of the commodity: from its strategic stockpile (if there is sufficient there); by buying it on the spot market; or for some commodities such as gold and uranium, by leasing it. Two sources of uncertainty, the spot price of the commodity and the occurrence of serious incidents that interrupt production, are considered. For simplicity it is assumed that the commodity price follows a geometric Brownian motion, that productions incidents have a binomial distribution, that they are independent from one time period to another and that they do not affect prices. A branching tree structure is used to model the joint evolution of prices and production incidents. The aim of this research project was to evaluate the companyÆs options for fulfilling its contractual commitments. When evaluating these options, multi-stage stochastic programming with recourse was used to solve this problem because in addition to providing the dollar value of the project, it gives decision-makers the æroadmapÆ to reach the optimal value. That is, how much material should be bought/sold on the spot market, how much to add to/subtract from the stockpile, how much to lease and in the worst case what the shortfall would be, for each time period as a function of the current spot price and breakdown status. A case-study over a five-year period is used to illustrate the proposed procedure. In this study the production would be sufficient to cover the companyÆs contractual commitments unless production incidents occur. Focus is on evaluating the impact of the quantity initially in the stockpile on the value of the project when the commodity market is tight, that is, when only small quantities can be bought on the spot market or by leasing.

DURING the past 20 years the advantages of reinforced concrete as a substitute for timbering in so-called permanent mine openings have been fully recognized, and its use has become almost general practice in the larger mines. The term "permanent mine openings" is used advisedly and is assumed to embrace such openings as ventilation shafts, material shafts and main hoisting shafts, with their adjacent stations, ore pockets, etc. In the concreting of such openings, the actual cost as compared with that of timbering has been of secondary consideration, the support of large openings, elimination of fire hazards, and prevention of inter-ruptions to production being the primary objectives. The ultimate economy, however, of lining such openings with concrete when they are to remain in use during the entire life of the mine, and especially when they are in bad ground, will seldom be questioned. During this 20-year period there have appeared in engineering publi-cations a number of interesting articles on the use of concrete in mines, nearly always describing some specific project of major proportions, such as the concreting of ore pockets, large stations or main hoisting shafts. Such articles are unquestionably of interest, since the projects require considerable engineering thought, not only in the method of excavating large openings, but in their engineering design as well. Concreting of main hoisting shafts, particularly when this is done with the least possible interruption to production, provides some interesting problems. The concreting of haulage drifts of the dimensions commonly found in mines, on the other hand, soon develops into a routine operation, there-fore it is with some hesitancy that the author attempts to prepare an article on this subject. The writer can recall only one article on the concreting of mine haulageways, although several articles have been written concerning the concreting of tunnels considerably larger in dimensions than those required in general mine practice.

The offshore production of oil and gas resources has been active in the Gulf of Mexico since Kerr- McGee drilled the first commercial well out of the sight of land in 1947. Since then, approximately 60% of the offshore oil/gas production structures used globally have been erected in the GOM to support the production of energy resources’. The shallow, shelf and shelf edge waters of the Gulf of Mexico have reached or are rapidly approaching production maturity, requiring that the fixed structures used to support energy production be removed or otherwise disposed of by suitable means. The use of energetic materials has been determined to be a safe, efficient and cost effective technology to remove fixed offshore structures whose service life has been exceeded.

Shales in the Appalachian Region of Kentucky and Tennessee were sampled and tested to determine their use as raw materials for the manufacture of lightweight aggregate by the rotary-kiln method. Nine samples were obtained from eastern Kentucky and 143 samples were obtained from eastern Tennessee. As a result of preliminary testing of these samples, two sources in eastern Kentucky and 11 sources in eastern Tennessee were resampled for rotary-kiln tests. The rotary-kiln tests showed the two sources in Kentucky and seven sources in Tennessee contained shale that would produce satisfactory aggregate. Lightweight aggregate processed from these nine sources was tested in concrete shapes and was found to be suitable for use in structural concrete.

The paper highlights development of tunneling methodology in the UK during the years 1990-2000 using the example of two major tunneling contracts where there solution of difficult tunneling problems during construction has benefited the industry as a whole. The paper deals with specific difficulties on two Contracts. The London Water Ring Main 80 kms (50 miles) long tunnel average internal diameter 2.54 m (9 ft4 in) and the Brighton Stormwater Tunnel 5.2 km (3.2 miles) long tunnel with an internal diameter of 6 m (19 ft 8 in). The results of human endeavour and technological innovations will demonstrate the giant strides made in tunneling methodology in the last decade of the 20th Century.

From 19BS thru the present, Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company has been involved in several transportation construction projects in the Seattle area. Two of these contracts, the Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel, and The Seattle Bus Tunnel, had unique foundation features. MT. BAKER RIDGE TUNNEL ACCESS PITS The Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel is part of the general upgrading of the I-90 freeway between I-405 and I-5 (see Fig. 1). It is located on the western shore of Lake Washington and consists of a 1300 foot long large diameter tunnel thru Mt. Baker Ridge. The ridge consists of over consolidated silts and clays overlain by a loose to medium dense silty fine sand. The water table is perched in this upper layer of material. The clays of Seattle have a history of being very sensitive to excavation. The hills are marginally stable and numerous landslides have occurred recently in the area of the tunnel. [ ]

As part of the Link Light Rail project in Seattle, WA, work was completed at the Pine Street Stub Tunnel (PSST) in early 2007 for the Central Link project. This tunnel was excavated using cut-and-cover construction within the limits of Pine Street. The stub tunnel provides a turn back via double crossover for light rail trains running in the Downtown Transit Tunnel (DTT), as well as a connection point for the next phase of the project, the University Link (Fig. 1). Designing the new University Link tunnel connection to the existing PSST was a tricky task. The on-site geotechnical conditions, buried obstructions, geometry, requirements for construction and balancing operational considerations and neighborhood stakeholder concerns associated with the recently completed PSST combined to create a uniquely challenging assignment.

Final mine sealing of BMA’s Crinum North mine, near Emerald, Queensland was undertaken in December 2015. Due to the benign atmospheric environment at Crinum North, the Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS) Górniczy Agregat Gasniczy (GAG) unit was utilised to reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground atmosphere as part of the final sealing process.The GAG was utilised by way of a vertical borehole from the surface to seam to successfully reduce oxygen levels throughout the underground mine workings. Application of the GAG unit enabled the underground mine to be classified as stable and inert within days of the GAG operation, and subsequently cease gas monitoring at Crinum North. The data and information obtained from this activity provides valuable information to the underground coal mining industry on successful application of the GAG in realistic situations.This paper discusses the strategy used for sealing, the assisted inertisation and the results obtained from the application of the GAG unit. It discusses both the overall results and gives a detailed review of the gas monitoring data obtained via the tube bundle and real-time system, both during and following the use of the GAG unit.Gas monitoring results obtained and the strategy used are critical to share with the industry to obtain a better understanding of how the GAG unit works, and how it can be applied for emergency preparedness, emergency response or planned inertisation.CITATION:Westthorp, E, 2017. "IntroductionSteel Core Piles are used extensively in Scandinavian countries, where hard rock is found within reasonable depths. A steel core is cast into a drilled steel tube casing and a rock hole is extended below the casing. This pile type is considered a very reliable type of pile, and for urban environment it has several advantages compared to other types of piles. One critical phase of the installation is the drilling of the casing. Usually a DTH (Down The Hole) hammer is used. Drilling in fine grained soils, e g silt, below the ground water level, may give rise to an excessive volume of soil material flushed up from the point of the casing, resulting in unacceptable settlements around the pile installation area.Using a new method for drilling of the casings, the ELEMEX-method has proven to significantly reduce the risk for such problems. In the paper a case record from a ground improvement project in central Stockholm is described. Ground settlements around the drilling area were carefully monitored over a longer period. Both the new drilling method and the conventional DTH casing drilling method where used, so that the corresponding ground settlements could be compared. Settlement records and comments are included in the paper.The paper also gives a description of the project. The installation of new piles and foundation constructions cover a whole city block in Stockholm downtown. The reason for the replacement of the old, damaged wooden piles were due to their destruction caused by a long time lowering of the ground water table. ASARCO LLC (Asarco) Hayden Copper smelter, in Hayden, Arizona, has operated continuously (except for minor labor and economic curtailments) since 1912. The current plant configuration comprises INCO flash smelting, Peirce Smith (P-S) converting and fire refining/anode casting. In order to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 1-hour National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for sulfur dioxide promulgated in June 2010, the Hayden smelter had to increase overall sulfur fixation from approximately 95 % to 99+ %, requiring a retrofit of the existing converter department and upgrade of associated emissions controls systems. The Converter Retrofit Project (CRP) involved replacing the five existing 13’ diameter Peirce-Smith converters (2 blowing, 2 hot standby) with three new 15’ diameter Peirce- Smith converters (1 blowing, 1 hot standby) to allow for more effective process gas capture using the existing acid plant contact section. Significant upgrades were made to the acid plant wet gas cleaning section and converter primary gas handling system to improve capture performance, reliability, and sludge handling. In addition, a new tertiary gas capture system was installed to further minimize fugitive emissions from the converter aisle. The existing furnace tapping ventilation ESP was replaced with a new baghouse to enable at least 50% SO2 removal using high-surface-area dry lime injection, which was also implemented on the existing converter secondary gas baghouse system. The first two converters and all gas handling system improvements were started up in April 2018, and the third converter was brought online in November 2018. This paper presents the regulatory context; genesis and rationale for CRP; detailed description of the project; challenges during commissioning; system improvements implemented, and design considerations made, and systems performance and process optimization achieved since startup.

"A survey of 925 mineral property transactions worldwide was carried out between 1987 and 2004. These mineral properties with reported Mineral Resources include 457 gold properties, 322 base metal properties, and five platinum group element (PGE) properties. Based on constant Canadian dollars, the results of the survey indicate that:• In general, unit metal values in the ground (e.g. $/oz Au or $/lb Cu) have kept pace with the changes in the respective metal prices during the period of the survey.• A general decrease in unit gold values in the ground has occurred from about $57/oz Au in 1987 to about $11/oz Au in 2002 for Canadian mineral properties, with the exception of a peak of $58/oz Au in 1996.• A similar trend for mineral properties has occurred in the United States, but with lower unit values, in the range from $1/oz Au to $10/oz Au during the last three years of the survey. • Unit metal values in the ground for gold properties in Canada were higher than for those in the rest of the world.• Unit metal values in the ground for copper properties in Canada were in the mid-range compared with other countries in the rest of the world; the United States and Australia were higher and Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe were lower than in Canada.• Unit metal values in the ground for zinc properties in Canada were also in the mid-range compared with other countries in the rest of the world; Latin America and Europe were higher and the United States, Australia, and Asia were lower than in Canada.• Unit metal values for nickel properties in Canada were highest compared with other countries in the rest of the world, followed by the United States, Australia, Africa, and Asia.• Gold values in the ground in Canada have ranged from 6% to 14% (with an average of approximately 10%) of the gold price.• The unit values of base metals in the ground have been in the order of 2% of the quoted metal price, during the period of the survey."

Renison Bell is on the Emu Bay Railway, midway between Zeehan and Rosebery on the west coast of Tasmania. The tin deposits in this area have been described by G. A. WaIler (1902), L. K. Ward (1909), H. Hermani (1914), and Hartwell Conder (1918), for the Tasmanian Geological Survey. The ore-bodies occur in the slates, grits, altered lava flows and tufts of the Dundas Series, and consist of fine-grained cassiterite disseminated through massive sulphides (chiefly pyrrhotite or pyrite), or through bodies of quartz and sulphides. Some of these bodies show a N.W.-S.E. strike, parallel to the strike of the tin belt, but others strike N.E.-S;W. or E.-W.The ore-bodies are of two types: (1) steeply dipping fissure veins,' spoken of locally as "feeders," and (2) flatter-lying bodies more or less conformable with the bedding planes of the slates (bedded veins), spoken of locally as "floors."The feeders range from 5-12 ft. in width, with occasional bulges as great as 4q ft. Their lengths vary from 100 ft. to several hundred yards, and they are known to continue to Clmsiderable depths. 'They dip steeply, generally at angles of 45° to 60° to the east or south.The floors, where they occur, 'are directly connected with the feeders, and are sheet-iike bodies of sulphide ore. The composite ore-bodies thus have the shape of an inverted L, or a T, according to whether 'the floor extends out from one side or both sides of the feeder. Most of the floors extend from the hanging-wall side of the feeder. Where erosion has removed the connection, they appear as separate bodies.The feeders as a rule carry more quartz and arsenopyrite than the floors, and are richer in tin. In addition, the cassiterite tends to be coarser grained in the feeders than in the floors. The floors, on the other hand, carry a greater proportion of -sulphides, chiefly pyrrhotite, and the grade of ore and grain size of the cas,siterite tend to decrease as the floor is followed down the dip away from the feeder, so that the outer and lower extremities of the floors may be too low-grade to work economically. The average grade of the ore worked at present is 0·9,0/0 tin. The slates forming the roofs of the floors are commonly much contorted and silicified,' so that they form hard rocks in which the contortion and shattering of the original slates are well preserved. Joints extending upwards, more or less at right angles to the roof of the floor, are occasionally filled with finely crystalline quartz, similar to that in the orebodies, and are often rich in tin, so much so that the slate as a whole may average 0·4% tin.Some carbonate gangue is present in all of the ore-bodies, commonly on the footwall side, and, in places it becomes an important constituent...

This paper is in two parts. The first covers the evolution of dredging leading to the development of the æNZ typeÆ large dredge and the second, current alluvial gold recovery practice in NZ. NZ was the first country in the world to adapt the bucket-ladder dredge to alluvial gold recovery. Between 1857 and 1907, gold worth (at today's NZ price of about NZ$600/ounce*) over $11 billion was exported û from a country with well under one million people at that time. Over 200 small dredges operated, mostly on the Clutha River, around the turn of the century, however by 1940, only 20 or so large machines remained, and the last of these, the 4000 ton 'Kanieri' ceased operations three years ago. Recently recognition of the superior digging power of the hydraulic backhoe and reintroduction of the simple 'trommel and riffleÆ plant with about 80 m3 /hour capacity has led to a proliferation of static and floating plants, there being at least 50 currently in operation on the West Coast and in Otago. There are signs however, that the process of evolution of such small unsophisticated plants into larger, more efficient units has begun again. * At the time of writing (October 1984) NZ$l. 00 = US 50ó. Reliable and discriminating small, laboratory scale methods of study have been developed and used successfully in the critical evaluation and interpretation of the carbonization characteristics of a wide range of raw and prepared materials, the variable factors in the coking process, and' the mechanical properties of the carbonized products. The simple and highly economic technologies have been successfully and effectively integrated with detailed surface and subsurface geological exploration programmes (particularly in the coalfields of the .Central Bowen Basin of Queensland) as well as with quality and utilization studies of a nUII!ber of representative Australian and Japanese coals. Previously, only the results of comparatively large, laboratory scale studies have provided information reasonably indicative of those to be anticipated hi industrial practice, but these suffer serious disadvantages in terms of economy of material, time and resources; they have been difficult or even impossible to use as an essential part of any normal or comprehensive exploration programme. On the other hand, although previously developed smaller scale laboratory methods derive considerable advantage from their flexibility, amenity to critical control and inherent potential for speed and economy, they have hitherto permitted no effective or direct comparison with the results of industrial practice or full scale assessment. Comprehensive study results achieved through technologies developed recently at the University 'of Sydney demonstrate that carefully controlled small laboratory scale methods of evaluation quite suitable for use in exploration and, other programmes may be used to predict with considerable accuracy and reliability (in some cases exceedingthat of pilot scale study) the principal strength index of one of the established and internationally recognized full sc:ale tests-the Japanese Industrial-Standard Drum Test. It is probable that further study may establish satisfactory correlations with the results of other standard industrial procedures.
