For improvement of urban traffic infrastructure, the City of Amsterdam is cur­rently constructing the 9.5 km long North-South Metro line passing through the central districts of Amsterdam. Focal section of the project is the Central Station linking the NS Line with the Central Railway Station, the East Metro line, new bus and tramway terminals, ferries and individual traffic. Construction works required for the project are of high complexity and technical standards. They are executed under severe restrictions concerning programming, space, logistics, and impact on the integrity of existing buildings and structures as all existing installations and facilities have to maintain fully operational during the construction period. The paper deals with the main geotechnical features of the project and in particular with the diaphragm wall and bored pile construction at the Voor-plein and the De Ruijterkade sections of the Central Station.

This bulletin is the third of the series of yearly petroleum bibliographies being published by the Bureau of Mines. The two preceding, Bulletin 149 and Bulletin 165, were for the years 1915 and 1916, respectively. In arranging the references the same general scheme has been followed, but as in those bulletins, several changes and additions have been made in the classifica.tion, the more important being in the classes " Development and production " and "Refining and refineries." German periodicals for 1917 were not procurable and references to articles in those and in other foreign journals that were not available have been credited to the sources from which they were procured.

Greater use should be made of lineations in investigations of the engineering properties of rock masses and in structural studies guiding prospecting programmes.A prominent alignment of elongate mineral grains and stretched pebbles usually marks the primary direction in which metamorphic rocks have been extended by flow. In local adjustment zones separating masses that have extended different amounts, this lineation has been a direction of slip. Kinks and crumples resulting from this slip lie in secondary lineation directions transverse to the primary mineral lineation.During deformation relatively mobile materials move into dilatant zones caused by irregularities in primary flow directions. This secondary movement transverse to lineated, primary-flow directions is the cause of crenulations and folds with axes parallel to flow lineations.INTRODUCTIONThe arrangement of inequidimensional particles in rocks is rarely statistically random. Platy minerals tend to be parallel to bedding and foliation planes. Elongate particles and linear structures lie most frequently in certain lineation directions. The types of elongate particles in lineated rocks include needle and blade shaped mineral grains, sheared out segregations, and stretched pebbles, amygdules, and aolites.Crenulations and kinks are the most common of the linear structures involved.Faint lineations are readily overlooked. Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.

To minimise ore dilution induced by blast movement in surface mines it is necessary to quantify such movement. This will allow more accurate location of the grade boundaries on the surface of a blasted rock pile before excavation. A method has been developed and tested for measuring accurately the direction and magnitude of subsurface blast movement, using a caesium vapour gradiometer and a real-time, differentially corrected global positioning system to locate the pre- and post-blast positions of magnetically enhanced target objects placed in blastholes inside a bench. The procedure does not necessitate disturbance of the blasted rock and the movement information is available sufficiently quickly to allow for modification of the selective mining boundaries for each surveyed blast. It was found that the maximum depth of target detection was 18 m and the overall accuracy was plus or minus 1 m horizontally and 1.2 m vertically

IN December, 1905, a Forwood down-wheeler grinding pan (5 ft dialmter), and similar in design to those in use on the Kalgoorlie goldfields, was installed for experimental work in connection with fine grinding jig tailings.The galena remaining in this product is very finely (closely) mechanically disseminated throughout the blende and gangue, rendering fine crushing imperative for its liberation. This Bureau of Mines publication presents an overview of mine electrical power systems research currently being conducted by the Bureau. The papers, given at a Technology Transfer Seminar, emphasize the increasing importance of research related to the safety considerations of underground coal mine electrical systems. Selected topics are included that summarize results of research in the areas of electrical shock prevention, explosion-proof enclosures and load centers, discriminating circuit breakers, and trailing cables. Other topics discussed at the seminar are published as separate sections of the Bureau of Mines Hand- book "Application Notes--Mine Electrical Power Systems."

"Introduction**The progress of the ""Safety First"" movement in the oil fields of California during the past few years has been remarkably rapid. It has been generally concede by those who have learned to value the life and limbs of their employees, that safety is essential to efficiency and no company that has a high accident rate can be considered an efficient organization. Accidents have a destructive effect on the morale of any body of workers and cause disorganization and delays.The increasing danger to life and limb involved in the drilling for and the production of oil and gas, has become so great that it is clearly evident that everything possible must be done to keep it within the narrowest possible limits.There is a tendency toward carelessness, especially by men who are employed in hazardous occupations. This is brought about by the familiarity of the risk under which they are working and in no industry is this more forcibly exemplified than in the oil fields. Men have performed the same or similar duties for many years and have worked around similar hazards and unprotected machinery until many have can entire disregard for the dangers surrounding then. Very often familiarity with a hazard occasions a contempt for that hazard which only too often results disastrously."

 Broken Hills is an adularia-sericite epithermal Au-Ag deposit, hosted in flow-banded rhyolites and overlying rhyolitic pyroclastic rocks in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield. The 7.1 Ma deposit was the largest producer of gold in the eastern Hauraki Goldfield, and was one of very few economic deposits hosted in Pliocene rhyolites. This paper presents the results of a recent study in the upper levels of the deposit. Maps and cross-sections constrain structural and lithological relationships, and the lateral and vertical extent of a breccia pipe û the major feature of the upper levels.   Previous studies in the upper levels of Broken Hills have shown that gold and silver values are concentrated around and within a large breccia pipe, mined by a series of æcaveÆ stopes and in veins. Contour diagrams of Au-Ag data from channel samples indicate that the breccia pipe was a major fluid channel-way for mineralising solutions.   The breccia pipe deposits are part of the dynamic geothermal system that formed the Broken Hills ore bodies; they developed as a result of hydrothermal brecciation in areas of structural weakness within a rhyolite pyroclastic unit that overlies a massive rhyolite lava-flow unit. The main breccia pipe begins near the rhyolite/pyroclastic contact, having the shape of an inverted, inclined cone, and consists of silicified breccia, stringers of quartz, and irregular patches of clay-altered country rock. Smaller zones or pockets of hydrothermal eruption breccia are silicified and contain low grade gold in the matrix and in the adjacent silicified wall rocks.   Quartz has been classified according to its physical characteristics as seen in situ and hand specimens indicate that vein definition decreases upwards, perhaps as a result of changing lithological conditions and/or increasing proximity to the paleosurface. Hydrothermal quartz is widespread as veins and as a replacement mineral, or lining fractures and cavities and overgrowing rock fragments. Breccias contain vein quartz, but some quartz veins cross-cut breccias, indicating that vein and breccia formation was relatively synchronous and overlapped in time.   Disseminated gold-silver mineralisation is associated with vein quartz and silicic alteration of the wall rock within the breccia pipe. The auriferous zones are highly irregular and erratic, and sampling results show a wide range of gold-silver ratios, suggesting that highly volatile physiochemical conditions prevailed during mineralisation.

As part of an initiative to improve value in mining, CEMI is developing a handbook on best practice in mine design. Various formats were examined, and of these, the wiki was selected as being most suitable. Being web-based, its global reach and capability of being continuously updated allows the wiki to evolve as new knowledge is generated, and to capture the diversity of experience of practitioners in the mining industry. While wikis have many advantages in terms of organizing content and searching, their ability to be edited by users is often seen as a negative characteristic for quality control. To ensure reliability of information content, author attribution, specific authorship models, and a peer review process have been implemented, in addition to the standard version tracking capability of wikis. The first phase of the project concentrates on topics related to underground hard rock mine design. The scope will be expanded to cover other aspects of mining as the project matures. Strategic partnerships with various organizations, such as the CIM, and CANMET, are being formed to provide a wide range of seed material to stimulate growth of the site. www.minedesignwiki.org

A study carried out in the iron basin of Lorraine (North-East of France) highlighted the existence of under-oxygenated and noxious gas emissions (carbon dioxide, radon…) in vast built-up areas related to former mine workings. Site investigations showed that the gas flow was mainly due to natural thermal air circulation between old mines and external atmosphere. The main hazards associated with this flow of gas and its potential accumulation in confined volumes in buildings are asphyxiation and intoxication. A further study is in progress in order to better understand the origin of the gas generation within the old iron mine workings. Following the first hypothesis, the carbon dioxide emission is mainly due to the specific hydro-geo-chemical process associating the pyrite oxidation with the acid dissolution of carbonates. Environmental investigations have been undertaken by Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) since 1981 when the Ok Tedi Environmental Study was commenced. Environmental monit- oring and management programmes were implemented in 1983. The programmes included water quality monitoring, river flow and sediment monitoring, surveillance of aquatic biological communities and a health and nutrition survey of the local people. These original programmes have continued, and additional programmes of work have been developed and revised to reflect changing operations and the need to focus investigations on specific areas and issues of concern. In April 1990, following the establishment by the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) of environmental management criteria for the Fly River system, compliance monitoring programs were introduced. Details of the compliance and additional monitoring programmes undertaken by OTML throughout the Ok Tedi and Fly catchments, including programmes of investigation in the Fly River estuary, Gulf of Papua and Torres Strait, are presented.

The purpose of this symposium is to challenge industry to better air classification, and as a first step toward fulfillment, to spotlight three fairly recent, aerodynamically designed, highly efficient air classifiers. This discussion does not intend to imply that present practice is bad. Actually, when present air separators are used for the jobs for which they were originally designed, they give high production and uniform operation, with a minimum of maintenance. The customers of nonmetallic mineral pigment producers, however, are making increasing demands for finer products, such as 99.9 pct -20µ, which appears to be beyond the economic capabilities of standard air separators industrially used over the last 10 to 30 years. Here is an actual example. A 10-ft diam pebble mill is in closed circuit with a conventional 12-ft diam centrifugal air separator, grinding 20-mesh wollastonite to a series of fine grades up to 99.97 pct - U.S. No. 325 mesh (44µ). Fig. 1 shows variations in fineness of mill discharge (or air separator feed), recycle for regrinding (or air separator tails), and product as measured by a wet rotating sieve test. For example, when the mill is turning out a product 80 pct -325, the mill discharge or separator feed is 30 pct -325, and the coarse tailings or recycle is only 5 pct -325. Hence 25 pct of the 30 pct available is accepted as product. This is efficient separation, and the ratio of recycle to feed is only about 2: 1. How- ever, to make a product testing 99.97 pct -325 the separator feed is 62 pct -325 and the coarse tailing 60 pct -325. In this case the recycle ratio is about 13: 1 and the economic limit to produce fineness has been substantially reached with this given equipment and process arrangement.

To demonstrate the feasibility of unwatering ore reserves previously indicated in the virgin Melrose zinc-lead field in Kansas and Oklahoma, the Bureau of Mines .carried through a pumping project on the Park Walton farm in 1943. Due to success of the undertaking, attention was turned to exploration of other indicated ore deposits and promising areas within that part of the field benefited by .the drainage project, By the middle of 1946, four private mining companies were active in the field; and a considerable output of lead and zinc concentrate had been obtained from the new Park Walton mine and mill. The Park Walton Ore deposit was unwatered by installing deep-well pumps in three holes previously drilled by the lessee. Pumping was continued by the Bureau of Mines at a rate of 2,500 to 1,000 g.p.m. for about 6 months; during this time the local static artesian water-level, originally averaging 108 feet below the surface in the old drill holes was lowered to the 316-foot level, which justified beginning the initial shaft sinking and mine developments. In all, about 750,000,000 gallons of water was pumped by the Bureau of Mines at an operating cost averaging $0.024 per 1,000 gallons.

The use of walk-through inspections, approvals and ad hoc investigations to ensure risk is kept within acceptable levels is reaching its limits of effectiveness. Further improvement in occupational health and safety requires a systems approach, and the use of Quality Management principles is an obvious basis for this. SafeGuard, a æbest practiceÆ model health and safety management system and audit criteria based on AS/NZS ISO 9001:1994, has been produced by the Department of Mines and Energy. Quality style audits of mine and quarry health and safety systems are now being carried out by the Inspectorate.

Iron ore mining in the Adirondack region of northern New York dates back to the Revolutionary War. It is recorded that Benedict Arnold in his campaigns in the Lake Champlain area during the American Revolution utilized the local ores to produce armament and cannon balls. Through the efforts of early pioneers, the iron mining industry in northern New York gained impetus so that in the 1880's mines in the area accounted for nearly one fourth of the iron ore produced in the United States. Both magnetite and red hematite ores were mined during this period. With the discovery of the Lake Superior ores, the iron ore industry in New York started to decline and remained relatively unimportant until 1938. Modern day methods of mining and beneficiating sufficiently high tonnages of low-grade ores to justify the large expenditures for plant and equipment prompted a resurgence in northern New York mining. During the past several years, the production of iron ore from the Adirondack magnetites has greatly increased, and production which amounted to .6%, of the United States total during the 1918-1928 period (Mining and Metallurgy, November 1943) has been increased to 2.85% of the total in 1948. Drums of a modern longwall shearer are manufactured to include various constructional features conveying extracted material onto the face conveyor as efficiently as possible. Designing a drum with a conical shell or with reduced vane length, consequently with a stepper vane angle, is the most widely employed method in an attempt to increase loading efficiency. This study compares loading performances of two such drums, one having a conical shell with modified loading vanes, the other with a cylindrical shell with reduced vane length. Firstly, the loading performances of drums are predicted and the maximum haulage rate attainable with the drums are calculated. Then the performances of drum are compared by long-term comprehensive underground trials with coal shearers under similar conditions during the production operation of Park Termik Cayirhan coalmine in Turkey. Although higher loading performance is predicted for cylindrical drums, the in situ trials point out that Globoid drums have a slightly higher loading performance than cylindrical drums. Furthermore, the relationship between operational variables, i.e. extraction height, sumping depth, haulage rate and in situ loading performance, were investigated statistically on the basis of data gathered during the underground trials. This paper details the approach adopted to upgrade the current metallurgical facilities at both the Driefontein and Kloof Gold Mines in the Republic of South Africa. Goldfields Ltd operates eight metallurgical plants within South Africa of which three have recently been upgraded to replace the older technology previously installed, with modern equipment. This upgrade was undertaken with a view to improving extraction efficiencies and to reduce operating costs. The upgrade was undertaken in a phased approach with the first phase focused on the replacement of the filtration/zinc precipitation processes with modern pumpcell carbon-in-pulp technology. Included in this upgrade phase was the installation of an automated hands-free electrowinning cell, which represents the first commercial application of its kind in the industry. The second phase of the upgrade entailed replacement of the multiple comminution stages previously installed with large SAG and SAG/Ball mill combinations. Due to the rapid return on these projects, a fast-track approach was adopted which necessitated the purchase of available good conditioned second-hand mills from both within South Africa as well as in Australia. Goldfields Ltd is a large mining house with gold mining operations in South Africa, Australia and Ghana. A well advanced PGM exploration project is underway in Finland- Arctic Platinum.

"On July 1, 1997, a rockslide occurred on the I-40 in Hayward County, North Carolina that completelyblocked all lanes and disrupted traffic flow in the region. Remedial measures were undertakenimmediately in order to open traffic, however on-going geotechnical investigation revealed stabilityconcerns that necessitated closing the highway to ensure public safety. Access to the top of the slope was available only from the bottom of the slide on the Interstate I-40. Excavation and trim blasting started from the top and along the west slope of the failure, however, additional geotechnical evaluation indicated that slope stability remedial measures were required to support the western rock slope mass."
