"Throughout the Paleozoic, a variety of gold depositional environments were created in the New Brunswick segment of the northern Appalachians because of the complexity of arc and continental plate collisions and subsequent erosion of the orogen. In southwestern New Brunswick, recent exploration and research has focused on deposits and occurrences that can be broadly classified as intrusion-related, generated by late- to post-orogenic felsic to intermediate plutonic rocks emplaced during the Early to Middle Devonian. This work has led to the establishment of models for gold mineralization and guidelines for exploration in this area, which might also be applicable elsewhere in the southern part of the province and, perhaps, throughout the northern Appalachians. The deposits in the vicinity of Clarence Stream in southwestern New Brunswick exemplify this deposit type, and highlight the emergence of a possible major gold district in the region. Durant le Paléozoïque, une grande variété d’environnements aurifères ont été créés dans le segment néo-brunswickois des Appalaches du nord en raison de la complexité des collisions entre arcs et plaques continentales ainsi que durant l’érosion subséquente de l’orogène. Dans le sud-ouest du Nouveau Brunswick, les travaux d’exploration et de recherche récents se sont tournés vers les gisements et les indices appartenant à la classe des gîtes associés aux intrusions, générés par des roches plutoniques felsiques à intermédiaires tardi- à post-orogéniques mises en place au Dévonien précoce à moyen. Ces travaux ont permis d’établir des modèles de mise en place pour la minéralisation aurifère ainsi que des guides d’exploration pour ce secteur, lesquels pourraient aussi être appliqués ailleurs dans le sud de la province et, possiblement, dans l’ensemble des Appalaches du nord. The report covers several aspects of mine safety ground systems, primarily for underground coal mines. The design of a combined ground fault-ground check monitoring system is presented. An analysis is made of grounding systems for dc shuttle cars. Complete resistance data and results of physical inspections of self-salting ground rods are presented. A detailed resistance and economic analysis is presented for the use of composite materials for building inexpensive and effective ground beds in high-resistivity areas. The desireability of penetrating the coal seam with a borehole safety ground is investigated. A report is made of a Mine Substation Grounding and Bonding Workshop.

Students of the modern blast furnace seem unanimously agreed that they are observing a major revolution in practice. Rather than changing construction and operation of the furnaces, most of the great advances now under way deal with the raw materials feed. Prepared burdens have gained increasing significance during recent years. Sizing, concentration, and agglomeration have all become bywords to greater production and reduced operating costs. The remarkable results with test furnaces in which self-fluxing sinter makes up part or all of the ore charge foretell even greater improvements. Other investigators have reported many of these advances, and it is enough to predict here that more and more operators will turn to the use of self-fluxing sinter. This change in the operator's requirements comes at a time when one major section of the iron ore regions, the Mesabi, is finding it difficult to maintain, let alone improve, the tonnage and grade of its shipping product. To meet the new demands with respect to quality and structure, the iron ore producers of this area turned first to screening, crushing, and concentrating intermediate ores. More recently, declining higher-grade reserves have led to multimillion-dollar investments in plants to treat the low-grade magnetic taconites.1,2 To yield a suitable concentrate, the Minnesota magnetic taconites must be ground to about 80 pct through 325 mesh, too fine to be charged directly to the blast furnace or to make acceptable feed to the sinter strand. The pelletizing process was developed to meet the structure requirements laid down by the blast furnace operators. Taconite producers are succeeding in their efforts just when the attention of the blast furnace man is being drawn to the great advantages of self-fluxing sinter.3 The taconite operators are ready with an alternative. Why not produce sclf-flus ing pellets? At the Hibbing laboratory of Pickands Mather & Co., where much of the early work was done that led to Erie Mining's 7.5-million ton taconite plant at Hoyt Lakes, Minn., preliminary investigations have been made. Present Taconite Operations: Details of this work will be clarified by a brief review of agglomeration practice in commercial taconite plants. After the taconite has been ground to about 80 pct through 325 mesh to liberate the magnetite grains, the ore is concentrated on magnetic separators, thickened, and filtered to about 10 pct moisture. This structure and moisture fit in closely with the conditions required to produce good balls. It has been found with taconite concentrates that at least 60 pct of the feed to the balling drum must be —325 mesh to obtain good ball compaction within reasonable time. The filter cake moisture usually permits a slight water addition at the balling drum, and further balling control is obtained by adding about 12 Ib of bentonite and 1 1/2 lb of soda ash per dry short ton of concentrate. These additives, and occasionally small quantities of fine coal, are thoroughly mixed with the filter cake ahead of balling. The swelling property of bentonite improves the green and dry strength of the balls so they can be handled without breakage until they are fired. Soda ash is added for pH control to insure maximum performance of the bentonite, and coal is added for more heat in the firing process when required. The balls, normally 3/8 to l-in. diam, are brought to a temperature of 2350" to 2500°F in the indurating furnace. Heat for this process comes from three sources: 1) fuel burned in the combustion chamber, 2) oxidation of the magnetite concentrates to hematite, and 3) coal added to the balls. Pellet strength is developed by grain growth and bridging and, if enough slag-forming constituents are present, by slag bonding. Conversion to hematite is usually close to 100 pct in the fired pellets. Batch Test Procedures: Initial studies of self-fluxing pellets were made by producing balls on a batch basis under carefully controlled laboratory conditions. This report summarizes ongoing research at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Spokane Research Laboratory, in which collision warning systems for surface mining dump trucks are being evaluated. Common accidents involve these large trucks running over smaller vehicles or pedestrian workers. Collision warning systems currently use one of several methods, including radar, radio-frequency-signal detection, or ultrasonic signals, to detect and warn of the presence of an object or person in the blind spots of the mining equipment. Most available systems have not been tested on large off-highway dump trucks. This report evaluates several systems on two sizes of trucks, a 50-ton-capacity truck commonly used in quarries and construction and a 240-ton-capacity truck commonly used in open-pit mines. Tests were conducted to determine false alarm rates, alarm effectiveness, and reliable detection zones for a person and a pickup truck. The results indicate that radar and radio-frequency identification systems show promise for this application and that several of the improved systems are ready for extensive field tests. However, challenges still exist in applying these technologies to large trucks.

"The experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of various process parameters in rotary degassing of aluminum alloy AS5U3G. Degassing was carried out by use of argon inert gas. The flow rate of the gas was investigated in the range of 12 to 21 L/min., 350 to 500 rpm rotor speed, 6 to 12 minutes degassing time, and 755°C to 780°C melt temperature. Degassing efficiency was evaluated through measuring the density of RPT samples. By optimizing the process parameters, RPT sample density was increased up to 2.73 g/cm3, which guaranties the production of high-quality aluminum castings. Tensile strength and elongation were increased considerably by degassing process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows small size and well-distributed microporosity. IntroductionOne of the major problems associated with the casting of aluminum alloys is the formation of gas porosity. Aluminum and its alloys are very susceptible to hydrogen absorption. Because solubility is much lower in solid state than liquid state, hydrogen atoms leave their position during solidification and combine together to form hydrogen molecules. These micrometer- scale cavities, called microporosity, cause the reduction of mechanical properties, particularly strength, ductility, fracture toughness, fatigue resistance, pressure tightness, and corrosion resistance (Laslaz, 1991; Jorstad and Rasmussen, 1993; Sigworth and Wang, 1994; Korasani, 1996; Anson and Gruzleski, 1999; Zhang et al., 2000). To avoid these problems and produce good quality castings, it is necessary to remove hydrogen from the melt. Several methods are available for degassing aluminum melt. One of them is a rotary degassing system using inert gas, e.g. Ar or N2. Various thermodynamic and kinetic factors govern the removal of hydrogen from molten aluminum (Anderson, 1987; Sigworth, 1987; Pignault, 1993; King and Reynolds, 1995). These are some parameters that affect degassing efficiency. Some of them are discussed here and some are examined in this project."

The composition of ferromanganese slag is very important as it determines the slag/metal equilibrium relations including MnO content of final slag, melting relations and slag viscosity. The slag composition is further expected to influence the process temperature. The properties of ferromanganese slags are suitably described by its basicity and A/S mass ratios. The influence of slag basicity has been discussed in the previous papers. The present paper will discuss the effect of Al2O3 on melting relations, viscosity and MnO-content of final slag. This discussion will be based on assessed thermochemical databases and a recently developed viscosity model.

The applications of optical spectrochemical methods of analysis for determining trace impurities in metals are described, and the need for developing analytical procedures capable of accurately determining fractional parts per million of impurity elements in metals is stressed. Factors which determine sensitivity of detection and means to extend sensitivity levels in spectrochemical methods are discussed. Examples from the current literature illustrate the diversity of spectrochemical techniques that have been applied to the analyses of varied sample types, Many of the methods use preconcentration procedures to increase sensitivity limits. A bibliography containing abstracts of recent methods in included. Optical spectrochemical analysis is based upon the measurement of radiant energy emitted by atoms of the elements to be determined when a sample is subjected to a suitable source of excitation. The behavior of the valence electrons during excitation, usually by an arc, spark, or flame, produces radiant energy of specific wavelengths. This is recorded as spectral line images on a photographic film or plate by the spectrograph; for direct-reading instruments, the spectral lines are detected with photomultiplier tubes. The spectral lines result from the excitation of atoms in the sample. Each variety of atom produces its own characteristic set of lines, thus serving to identify the elements in the sample. Increased concentrations of elements in the excited sample results in increased blackening of the spectral line images.

An Automated People Mover (APM) transit system is planned for the growing Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The APM will improve passenger movements between the terminals, and provide a link to parking facilities, a new rental car facility, and the planned metro Light Rail. The underground works will include shallow twin bored tunnels, taxiway crossings, and underground stations constructed beneath critical airport facilities. Challenging soft ground conditions will require extensive underpinning and ground improvements. Design is underway, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2007 with project completion in 2015. The owner’s planned delivery method for the APM Project will be Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) with a Guaranteed Maximum Price.

"A 28-year study of cross folds leads to the conclusion that the northwest-southeast folds recognized in many areas of North America are part of a regional pattern. Detailed examination of over 650 geological maps and reports of Ontario indicates that this folding can be traced across the province. Evidence is presented that this fold pattern played an important part in determining the pattern and scale of intrusion, that its recognition in the field can aid in defining stratigraphy, folding and faulting, and that it may have played an important role in channeling hydrothermal or magmatic mineralization. IntroductionThe concept of regional cross folding in Ontario is not new. W.H. Gross (1955) discussed regional cross folds in the Archean of Northwestern Ontario, and A.M. Goodwin (1961) referred to regional cross folds in the Archean of Ontario and Quebec. However, the interpretation in this paper is new.The writer saw a cross fold for the first time, underground, at Little Long Lac Gold Mines in Geraldton, Ontario, in 1951. This recalled the ""transverse folds"" on E.R. Faribault's classical maps of Nova Scotia, published by the Geological Survey around the turn of the century; M.E. Hurst's cross fold(s) at Timmins, Ontario (Figure I); and the cross folds mapped by A.W. Jolliffe in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories. All these mapped cross folds had one thing in common with the fold at Little Long Lac: A northwest-southeast axial trend. Were such cross folds of purely local extent, or might they be indicative of a widespread regional fold pattern? If so, has such folding any significance for mineral exploration or potential?By 1959, based on a study of about 1000 Canadian geological maps and reports, including 291 in Ontario, the writer reached the conclusion that cross folding trending northwest-southeast is so widespread as to constitute a pattern of folding, and that such cross folding should produce changes in plunge along pre-existing greenstone fold belts."

"This paper describes mineral processing test work on drill core samples from an ilmenite deposit in Terrebonne County just north of Montreal.Mineralogical examination showed that the intimate associa¬tion between ilmenite and hematite precluded their separation. The maximum concentrate grade was therefore limited to 22.9% Ti. Liberation of gangue from the hemo-ilmenite grains occurred around 400 µm, a size which proved to be too coarse for recovery by flotation.Other physical separation techniques, such as elec¬trodynamic, magnetic and jigging, were tried in order to take advantage of the relatively coarse liberation size. An all-flotation procedure and a combination of jigging and flotation yielded similar separations.IntroductionInco Metals Company, through its subsidiary Canico, optioned an ilmenite deposit in Terrebonne County, just north of Montreal, and conducted a drilling campaign to confirm previous geological assessments of the deposit and to provide core samples for mineralogical study. Parts of these core samples were used for mineral processing studies, which will be described in this report. The objective was to identify suitable upgrading procedures, to determine the optimum combination of concentrate grade and recovery, and to provide suitable batches of concentrate for further treatment."

Refractory gold ores have been the subject of intensive metallurgical study in order to achieve more efficient recovery of contained values and at the same time to minimise environmental impact. Considerable innovative gold processing technology was introduced in New Zealand last century, the most notable being the first successful commercialisation of the cyanidation process by the Crown Mines Company at Karangahake in 1889. The Karangahake gold-silver deposit was second only +to the Waihi Martha mine in total bullion production from the region with active mining from 1882 until about 1920 and sporadic production between 1930 and 1944. Reevaluation at Karangahake with associated metallurgical testing has continued since that time becoming particularly active in the last decade as a result of increasing gold prices. Gold processing technology is reviewed and results of some recent test work are presented and discussed in the context of Karangahake history and future development possibilities. This work confirms the variability and complexity of the Karangahake deposit both mineralogically and metallurgically and suggests flotation followed by new and innovative smelting is the most appropriate processing route for the recovery of gold from the high grade ore which could be produced from the Karangahake workings in moderate tonnages.

In order to ensure safe mining and reduce surface damage in shallow multiple-seam mining, the failure characteristics of interburden strata with different coal pillar offset distances between pillars in the upper and lower seams, the distribution characteristics of stress concentration in coal pillars, and the development characteristics of stratum cracks and subsidence were physically investigated and also using UDEC2D software. Meanwhile, the effect of different coal pillar offset distances on the stress concentration of coal pillars and development of stratum cracks were studied. Based on those results, a formula for safe mining and reducing surface damage was established, which provided a theoretical basis for safe and environmentally friendly mining in shallow multi-seams. According to the results of the study, the optimal coal pillar offset distance (the side-to-side horizontal distance of the upper and lower coal pillars) between the upper and lower coal seams was developed to reduce the stress concentration of coal pillars and surface damage. The results of this study have been applied in Ningtiaota coal mine and have achieved good results in safe and environmentally friendly mining.

"The Dumont deposit is a large (1066 Mt probable reserve) low grade (0.27% nickel), nickel sulphide project located in the Abitibi region 25km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the deposit through pre-feasibility. And updated, revised pre-feasibility was released in July 2012.The disseminated nickel sulphide and alloy mineralization is hosted within the serpentinized dunite subzone of the Dumont Sill; a differentiated, pervasively serpentinized, ultramafic sill of komatitic affinity. Pentlandite, heazlewoodite and awaruite are the dominant nickel-bearing, metallic phases and can be recovered by conventional methods (flotation, mag separation). Non-recoverable nickel is also present within the silicate matrix of the serpentinized dunite and is locked in serpentine (Fe and Mg-rich variants) and minor olivine.A detailed mineralogical program including 1097 QEMSCAN® samples and 4300 electron microprobe points were undertaken to increase the understanding of the nickel deportment in the various recoverable and non-recoverable phases in a spatial context across the deposit. Eighty-three (83) metallurgical tests performed under a standard procedure have linked the mineralogy to metallurgical performance. This has allowed the creation and modelling of geometallurgical domains on a block by block basis to understand the recovery variation and metallurgical performance throughout the deposit. Understanding the spatial variability of Ni deportment in recoverable and non-recoverable phases through mineralogy is the key to understanding metallurgical performance thus, unlocking the value of the Dumont deposit and other large tonnage low grade ultramafic nickel deposits."

An average of 13 mine workers are killed each year by being run over or pinned by mobile mining equipment. At surface mines, these accidents commonly involve large dump trucks that drive over a smaller vehicle or a person that is in the dump truck’s blind spot. One method of detecting a person or another vehicle in a blind spot is to use some type of sensor technology such as radar or radio-frequency identification (RFID). Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health tested a number of commercially available and experimental sensors that monitor obstacles in a vehicle’s blind spots. None of the sensors had been previously applied to the specific problem of rigid-frame surface mining trucks. This report documents the procedures and results of tests conducted after RFID and radar systems were mounted on a 50-ton-capacity dump truck. It was determined that both RFID and radar technology show promise for detecting obstacles in the blind spots of mining equipment; however, more development work is needed to meet the unique requirements of mining equipment and the mine environment.

The research described in the paper was aimed at providing standardized information of cases of failed and intact coal pillars in the form of databases to researchers. It also offered the opportunity to take stock of the pillar stability situation in coalmining and to review the impact of the application of the safety factor formula for pillar design. It was found that the physical parameters of coalmining have not changed substantially over the last four decades. However, changes in the controllable parameters like pillar width, pillar width-to-height ratio and percentage extraction have all moved toward the more conservative side. Scrutiny of the database indicates that of all the failures recorded, only 23 occurred in panels that were mined after 1969, when one can assume that the safety factor formula was fully applied. If the pre-1969 practices had been continued, at least 144 collapses would have been expected. There has thus been a substantial reduction of pillar collapse cases, justifying the cost paid for the formula, which has shown to be in the region of 600 million tons of coal. It is evident that that are distinct differences in the natures of the failures among different coalfields. This justifies the attempts to derive seam or coal field specific strength formulae and is a topic that should be pursued.

Drifts are an integral component of underground mining. They provide access for men and material, means for transporting ore and rock and serve as air passageways. In view of their importance on the overall safety, economy and productivity of mines, empirical guidelines for controlled blasting design in drifts have been developed in this study. The application of the proposed concept was described by generating blast hole patterns for a mine with the help of a computer program. The mechanism of blast damage and the need for controlled blasting to alleviate ground control problems in underground mines have been outlined in this paper. The economic analysis between normal-and controlled blasting was performed based on the information from an operating mine. In addition, the review of drift blasting practices and problems in Canadian mines was also carried out in this study.
