Among the mining and metallurgical achievements of the latter part of the nineteenth century, not the least is the incep tion and successful prosecution by mining men of a technical educational movement which in magnitude surpasses any similar movement ever before set on foot. The following account of this undertaking has been prepared at the request of the Secretary of the Institute :*

The effect of using an anionic collector, Reagent 308, a sodium petroleum sulfonate, with a cationic collector, Armac T, a tallow, fatty acid amine acetate, was studied in a series of monomineralic flotation trials with the alkali feldspars and heavy minerals, ilmenite, rutile, garnet, and monazite. This combination of cationic and anionic collectors is employed to float feldspar and heavy minerals from quartz in the beneficiation of sand in Normanville, South Australia, to produce a suitable quartz sand for glassmaking. In the alkali feldspar trials, Armac T additions were held constant, while the 308 additions were varied. In the heavy mineral trials, the 308 was held constant while the Armac T was varied. Peak enhancement of the feldspar recovery was noted when the 308 additions were between 25% and 150% that of the Armac T additions. At higher 308 addition, depression of feldspar flotation occurred. This appears to be due to a neutralizing effect in the combined collector system and to the formation of a nondissociating complex of both collectors. This variability in flotation response when Armac T is used with 308 suggests that the two collectors do not act independently of each other.

ON the basis of compositional changes of a phase observed in a eutectoid Cu-Al alloy1 it has been suggested that mechanisms for the decomposition of the ß phase proposed by earlier workers2-5 were incorrect. The porphyry-copper province of southwestern United States and northern Mexico constitutes the largest copper-producing region in the world. More than 20 deposits discovered since World War II are being exploited or in the process of exploration and development. Because of the remarkable success in discovering new deposits, exploration activity continues at a very high rate and deeper targets are explored each year. Exploration programs for deeply buried porphyry-copper deposits require a reevaluation of the conventional exploration techniques. Though surface induced-polarization techniques have about reached their practical detection limit, aeromagnetics will play an increasing role in the exploration activity as will downhole logging tools. In addition to a valid geological concept, any successful exploration program for porphyry-copper deposits in the southwest must have two other essential ingredients: money and guts. Unfortunately many exploration programs in the southwest are underfunded and doomed to failure. Future exploration will demand more joint venturing in which larger and more expensive exploration programs can be successfully funded by groups of companies or syndicates.

Union Carbide began looking seriously at heap leaching in 1971. At that time some 1.6 million tons of mineral averaging 0.40 kg U308 /t) (0.80 lb U308) were stockpiled at various sites around the Gas Hills, Wyoming, uranium facility. Several alternatives for economically exploiting these reserves were considered and heap leaching seemed the most attractive. At the time, Western Nuclear Inc. was operating a heap leaching project nearby in which the low-grade ore was leached with sulfuric acid, the product liquor treated in an on site solvent extraction circuit, and the stripped product liquor re-acidified and recycled. The operators were most generous in allowing us to visit their site and in answering our questions. They were also helpful in discussing the problems associated with heap leaching. Their experience confirmed our belief that it was possible to operate a heap leach profitably on material too low grade for conventional milling.

Professor Somasundaran has given an excellent presentation of the numerous problems which remain to be solved before the selective aggregation of fine particulates is likely to see broad commercial application in the beneficiation of mineral fines. However it is useful, I think, to reiterate some of the major problem areas. The over-riding factor which has limited the development of selective aggregation techniques is that processes such as coagulation and flocculation tend to be inherently non-selective. Conditions which favor the aggregation of one kind of fine particles usually favor the aggregation of all kinds of particles. As Professor Somasundaran has pointed out, the state of aggregation of a fine-particle dispersion is primarily determined by the forces of interaction between the individual particles. In most systems, the dominant forces are: 1. van der Waals - London Dispersion forces between the particles themselves 2. electrical double layer forces 3. steric forces between adsorbed layers on the surfaces of the particles. The London Dispersion forces between like particles are always attractive, but for dissimilar particles dispersed in a fluid medium can, in some cases, lead to a net repulsion. Electrical double layer forces always lead to repulsion between like particles but can, again, cause either attraction or repulsion for dissimilar materials. Report of Secretary TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen -I herewith present a report of some of the more important activities of the Institute for the year of 1922. The outstanding feature of the year is the optimism felt by our members despite the continued depression in the mining industry. January 1, 1921, found many of our members out of employment or drifting into other industries to tide them over the depression; but almost universally the feeling has been that this was but a temporary condition and that sooner or later the necessary production of raw materials would enable these members to return to their former activities and renew their participation in Institute affairs As the year passed conditions improved and, before it ended, many had found employment in their previous occupations. Bearing in mind that this depression has been very real, we have reason to be well satisfied with the work that the Institute has been able to do The loss of members through inability to pay dues has been large, and income has been correspondingly reduced, but it proved to be materially in excess of that anticipated early in the year, so that a substantial and unanticipated balance was carried forward toward the activities of 1923.

At Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse limerock. While oversize material was crushed through Y4-in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity.

WOULD you like to find a large new ore deposit next year? The answer is as obvious as the question is foolish. But perhaps the question does have some merit if we alter it slightly and ask: What are you doing about finding new ore? This one is more difficult to answer. Possibly you are doing nothing about finding new ore because you have proved reserves for many future years of production. Others may be investing some small percentage of time, effort, and money in mineral exploration, and reserves may be currently adequate, or inadequate, in terms of many future productive years. Still others may be engaged in large-scale mineral exploration programs involving large expenditures of time, personnel effort, and money. In whatever category you may be, a final question might well be asked. Is your current mineral exploration program, or lack of program, consistent with the long-range needs and objectives of your organization and of the mining industry as a whole, and is it designed to stimulate the growth of the industry in future years, or is it only a short-range program in response to some current situation?

The tin deposit of Monserrat, Bolivia, consists of one major vein 1600 m in length. The ore is unusual because of the notable quantity of teallite, even though cassiterite is the principal tin mineral. The deposit, formed at shallow depth under a wide range in temperature, may be classed as xenothermal. Polished sections reveal a complex history of replacement, with low-temperature minerals deposited before high-temperature minerals.

Reconstruction of the British mining industry began shortly after nationalization in 1947 and continued until well into the 1950s with the support of the government. This support diminished as plentiful supplies of cheap oil from the Middle East made many coal mines uneconomic. The planned rundown which followed was foreshadowed in the 1965 White Paper which outlined financial measures to speed the closure of uneconomic collieries. The decline appeared likely to continue into the 21st century as the role of coal in UK energy requirements became less and less significant. This policy was well on course in 1973 when the oil crisis led to a complete reappraisal of the position. A government examination in 1974 of the coal industry then supported the National Coal Board's general strategy of major capital investment as set out in its ' Plan for Coal ' .1

This paper attempts to show the role of induced polarization (IP) and resistivity surveys in the discovery of the ore bodies of Gibraltar Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) and the importance of conducting large enough surveys to properly evaluate the results. The first IP survey was conducted in the area in 1963. This survey was extended and other IP surveys were added to it for the next seven years. The data from these surveys was finally combined to produce four large scale plan maps of resistivity and percent frequency effect (PFE) results (N = 1 and 3). A halo-type anomalous zone 6000 ft wide and 14,000 ft long was thus outlined in the PFE maps. The four ore bodies of Gibraltar Mines were found to occur along the inside rim of this IP halo.

The South Works high-tonnage billet caster was started in late March 1971, with the first heat being successfully cast to completion. Currently, over 31,500 tons per month are being produced. U. S. Steel designed and built this caster with the objective of producing quality-steel billets for critical bar, rod, and wire applications. The essential design parameters were based on studies conducted on the Research Laboratory's pilot caster, also located at South works. 1,2,3)* The caster is a four-strand, straight-mold machine that produces 7.5-inch- square billets at rates exceeding 300 tons per hour. An in-line-reduction mill reduces each strand to either 6-inch-, 5-inch-, or 4-inch-square billets.

IN the USSR considerable technical improvements have been made in hydraulic methods of mining coal. In New Zealand coal mining by these methods is still comparatively crude. The Russian techniques are closely studied in New Zealand, and this description is based mainly on translations of technical articles. Fundamentally the methods in both countries are the same-chief developments in the USSR are the use of high pressure water jets, capable of winning all but the hardest coal without prior blasting, and hydraulic pipeline transportation where the gradient is unsuitable for flume transport.

A previous article reported a combination process for recovering both metallic iron and metallic manganese from the manganiferous iron ores of the Cuyuna Range in Minnesota.' In this process, the iron was recovered by direct reduction and magnetic separation and the manganese was recovered from the nonmagnetic tailing by leaching and electrolysis. The current efficiency during the electrolysis of manganese is quite low, in the range of 60 to 70%, due to the simultaneous plating of hydrogen.2,3 The parameters that affect the current efficiency are (1) the concentrations of the manganese ion and the ammonium sulfate buffer, (2) the effect of autoxidant, (3) temperature, (4) pH, and (5) current density. Ring tension tests, permeability tests, and microscopic fracture studies have been performed to investigate the damaged zone induced by drilling (diamond, percussion, and rotary) in the borehole walls. Specimens are drilled with three different hole sizes (38, 76 and 102 mm diameter) in Pomona basalt and Grande basaltic andesite. The thickness of the damaged zone ranges from 0.0 to 1.7 mm. A larger drill bit induces more wall damage than a smaller one. Different drilling techniques show different damage characteristics (intensity and distribution). Damage characteristics are governed not only by drilling parameters (bit size, weight on bit, rotational speed, diamond radius, and energy), but also by properties of the rock. The weaker rock tends to show more intense damage than does the stronger one. Cracks within grains or cleavage fractures are predominant in coarse grained rock (larger than 0.5 mm grain size) while intergranular cracks are predominant in fine grained rock (smaller than 0.01 mm grain size). The influence of the damaged zone on the permeability of the rock around the hole is investigated by permeability tests.

IN concentration of certain ores by soap flotation, prevention of quartz flotation is desired; the contrary is true in treatment of some oxide iron ores. Experimental study of the flotation of quartz goes back at least a quarter of a century.' Clean quartz does not float with fatty acids or soaps but does float when activated by one of many metallic salts. Control of pH is important. Broadly speaking the problem of quartz flotation has been approached from the empirical side, as was the related topic of flocculation or dispersion of quartz suspensions.' Empirical studies indicated the existence of critical relationships between the additions of collector and activator. These additions were not stoichiometric for the formation of soaps of the activator cation.

Introduction In recent years, the industries of the US have been caught between ever increasing environmental concerns and an increasing uncertainty in availability of fuel. An obvious solution is to use our vast reserve of coal by direct combustion or gasification. The problem involves development of a fuel that is environmentally acceptable for these purposes. In order to resolve this problem in the shortest period of time, it would be ideal if an existing technology could be modified to produce a clean fuel from coal. Shortly after World War II, the iron ore industry was compelled to develop a high quality ore from low grade resources. This need led to the development of the taconite industry which involved milling, concentrating, and pelletizing technologies. These technologies are now fully established and applicable to conversion of coal. This presentation introduces a process for converting high sulfur coal into carbonized composite pellets, which emit low quantities of sulfur and particulate matter and may be produced by employing proven elements of technology.
