Throughout the Lake Superior Basin each of the great ironranges, from which vast quantities of iron-ore have been, and are now being mined, presents characteristics differing from each and all of the others. One of the most peculiar of these varying features is found in the dikes of the Gogebic range. From an economical standpoint this feature of the dikes has been studied by our practical mining men more than any other geological phenomena in connection with the deposits of merchantable iron-ore. In the greater portion of our mines these dikes appear to form the riffles in the sluice of the ore formation, against which the particles of iron oxide are deposited in the process of concentration out of the quartzose matrix which is termed the ironbearing formation. In composition these dikes are apparently of a dioritic formation, more or less altered and decomposed, comparatively soft, and sometimes almost steatitic. While frequently showing something of a cleavage in the direction of their pitch, they are devoid of parallel laminæ, and when broken assume the form of irregular angular fragments. They are generally of nil ashy grey color, but sometimes at great depth are found to be quite dark, almost black, and of a very hard massive nature, showing radial or fibrous crystallization. Practically all of the dikes thus far discovered in the iron formation are approximately at right-angles with the dip of the formation, and the greater number of them have an average easterly dip of from fifteen to eighteen degrees. The steady-state operation of an isothermal, counter-current reactor in which a mouing bed of hematite particles is reduced by hydrogen has been modeled mathematically using a generalized single-particle kinetic formulation for topochemical reduction with formation of the intermediate oxides, wustite and magnetite. These profiles illustrate , among other things, that the reducing-gas requirement in a countercurrent bed hinges upon the iron-wüstite equilibrium or 'pinch-point" in much the same way as in a staged reactor. standably, nearly all research has been focused on reduction of single particles of oxide under controlled conditions. While this approach simplifies the problem by eliminating interparticle interactions, the remaining intraparticle transport and kinetic processes still constitute a most formidable challenge. Only within the last few years has knowledge of single-particle reactions been developed sufficiently to make modeling of counter current-bed reduction a realistic and useful study of process behavior. By taking advantage of the fundamental difference between screening and classification—namely, that specific gravity has no effect on screening but is one of the important factors in classification—a combination of the two may be used as a process of mineral concentration. Although this fact is not new, so far as is known it has had little or no commercial application. The scheme is not presented now as a process for producing finished products but rather as a preliminary operation rejecting part of the barren material from an ore before it is subjected to more costly treatment. That is largely the function of the new heavy-media concentration processes that have been widely accepted. Original installation costs for the present sink-float processes are relatively high, however, which confines their use to operations where large tonnages are handled. Sink-float has been successful on only the relatively coarse (approximately plus 10-mesh) portion of an ore, and it is in this same range that classification screening can function most satisfactorily. Theoretically, there is no upper limit to the size of particles that can be handled in a sink-float operation, but the degree of liberation in the very large pieces usually limits this. With classification screening, particles from % to % in. would be the largest that could be handled, but the lower range could be extended somewhat below 10 mesh. In order to take full advantage of the difference in specific gravities of the minerals being separated, sorting in the classifier should be under as extreme hindered-settling conditions as possible. Laboratory tests have been made on a galena ore and on an artificial mixture of quartz and magnesite to determine the separations that may be expected. Although more than one scheme may be followed, in these tests the separations were made by cutting the underflow from the classifier as a concentrate and then screening the overflow. The screen oversize was rejected as a tailing. Classification was done in a hindered-settling teeter column and screening was done by hand, using the standard 4 2 series. The accompanying flowsheet gives the testing procedure followed.

INTRODUCTION Characterization of a site for the prediction and simulation of dynamic events requires the determination of mechanical properties of the rock at stress/strain levels and rates and at a scale appropriate for the events and critical structures involved. The structures of interest can be on the surface, underground, or designed to impact and penetrate into the site (projectiles). Dynamic events of interest are equally diverse: seismic waves from distance earthquakes or explosions; close-in phenomena associated with earthquakes and explosions; vibrations associated with heavy equipment or machinery; and stress transients associated with impact and penetration. The complexity of site characterization depends on two factors not specifically related to the nature of the site itself: the stress levels generated by the dynamic event and the sophistication of the prediction and simulation techniques. For very high stress levels, such as occur near a nuclear detonation, and for low stress levels, such as occur during seismic wave propagation, site characterization is simplified, and often certain details of the site are not particularly important, such as shear strength variations in the case of very high stress levels. In the intermediate stress range, however, all descriptive relations are non- linear, a complete finite strain constitutive model is required, and all details of the site, such as lithology and fracture distribution, become important. The site characterization must be complete enough to support the most sophisticated prediction and simulation technique that will be applied to the analysis of the dynamic event. The procedures of site characterization are illustrated in this paper by a specific dynamic event, projectile impact and penetration, and a specific site, an outcrop of Dakota Sandstone near San Ysidro, New Mexico. A SURVEY of the literature on bottom-cast practice gives but scant information as to some of the real facts concerning this most interesting method of steel manufacture, and some of the information available is very misleading.1 An exceptionally good description of this method of pouring or teeming is to be found in an English publication2 on the heterogeneity of steel ingots. Quoting from this paper: (a) With bottom teeming, the metal rises steadily and progressively in the mold with the minimum possible agitation, the main force of the stream coming from the ladle being broken down or retarded by the down gate or runner. Further, the stream of metal from the ladle, under these conditions of casting, is invariably main-tained at a much more continuous rate and is steadier than with top teeming. (b) In view of the facts referred to in (a) it follows that with bottom teeming the metal is not exposed to atmospheric oxidation to anything like the same degree as with top teeming. In this paper it is intended to detail briefly some of the advantages of bottom-cast practice and to discuss the possibilities of iron-oxide control in the basic open-hearth furnace. A description of the type of charge, ingot mold set-up, etc., is found in detail in an earlier paper.3

THE Pittsburgh is one of the most important coal beds of Ohio. It was the last of the great coal beds to be worked extensively in that State, has the largest area of virgin coal, and will in all probability be the last of the great deposits to be exhausted. The line of outcrop sweeps nearly southwest in a sinuous line from Jefferson County on the north to Lawrence on the south, a distance on a bee-line of at least 150 miles. (Fig. 1.) The maximum width of the area under which this coal is due is about 55 miles, but in most places it is less than half that and in the two southern counties it is in places restricted to narrow ridges. As the map shows, the coal is thin or wanting along many miles of the line of outcrop. The large deposits form three separate areas, which, in order of their importance, are generally known as (1) the Belmont, (2) the Federal Creek, and (3) the Gallia fields.

Laboratory-scale intact and jointed rock masses were tested in field and laboratory experiments to investigate tunnel response in high stress environments. In most of the experiments the tunnels were modeled by a rigid-plastic foam polyurethane with a crush strength of 3.4 MPa (500 psi) and emphasis was placed on jointed rock parameters: joint sets (single set of parallel plane joints versus a double set of orthogonal parallel plane joints), joint plane angle with respect to the direct loading direction, and joint spacing. Other parameters were loading stress, loading direction, and tunnel reinforcement strength. Results show quantitatively the increase in tunnel deformation in jointed compared with intact rocks, double versus single joint sets, and large versus small angle between the joint plane normal and the loading direction. A surprising result was the decreases in tunnel deformation with increases in the number of joints across a tunnel diameter. The efficacy of scale modeling with laboratory-constructed rock was tested by modeling complex reinforced concrete and steel tunnel reinforcements in jointed rock masses and comparing the results with large scale tunnels previously fielded in highly jointed granite. Tunnel response was reproduced in surprising detail, including concrete fracture, steel liner bending and fracture, and critical load to produce these responses. The scale models also allowed sectioning of the jointed rock masses to observe gross sliding along the joints that accompanied tunnel failure.

INTRODUCTION The longwall method of mining coal underground is now a highly developed and accepted mining technology. However, it was only through a long history of successes and failures that this technology now has the potential for reversing the declining trend in underground mining productivity in the United States. From its early beginnings in the United States during the 1800's, several species of longwalls have evolved. The evolutionary record consists of a series of overlapping birth-death eras, with each era giving way to another unique longwall technology. Typically, an era begins when some new longwall technology appears in response to a new technical opportunity or economic need. This new technology is adopted initially by only a few innovators. Later, other imitators get on the bandwagon and the technology diffuses throughout the user population. But evolving technical demands and socio-economic circumstances eventually cause many of the adopters to discontinue its use. This paper chronicles seven eras in the history of the evolution and utilization of longwall technologies in the United States. Some of the important factors that have influenced this history are discussed. Some distinctions are drawn between the operators who were first to adopt longwalls (innovators), and the imitators who followed. Statistics are presented which show that longwall mining is being adopted at an exponentially increasing rate, substantiating the forecast for a significant number of new longwall installations in' the future. Potential barriers to this increased utilization of long- walls are noted.

THE purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the importance and the usefulness of phase measurements in electrical prospecting for ore, a subject about which virtually nothing has been published. The paper describes a new field method for ore prospecting, the "Turam" method, which makes use of phase measurements, and which has been used with great success for five years. Of the principal geophysical prospecting methods, the gravimetric and magnetic methods determine the direction and strength of the static fields of force of the earth. By seismic and electrical methods, fields of force are applied to the block of ground under investigation. By these methods a third parameter can be measured, besides the direction and strength of the field; namely, the time of arrival of the applied field at the different observation points. This time of arrival has been practically the only parameter measured in seismic work, while in electrical pros-pecting it has generally not been considered, the measurements having been limited to determination of direction and strength of the applied field.

Man: A purely detached consideration of nature and the place of man in it may easily result in somewhat pessimistic conclusions as to man and his destiny. However, when we come to the evaluation of man's role in the development of natural resources and his achievements in this field, a more optimistic tone may be justified. Hence the possible contradictions between Man and Nature, Perfection, and the present chapter are more apparent than real. After all, progress must have a foundation of optimism, and we cannot challenge either the faculty or the students to better work and to a progressive and constructive outlook without an underlying tone of optimism and basic faith in the future. Geology is the basic science of Mother Earth; the science of the natural forces that have produced and modified the structure of our globe; the science of minerals and rocks; of landscapes and soils; of water supply and mineral resources, including mineral fuels; and of the history of life, both plant and animal, as revealed by fossils in rocks. It is difficult to reduce man and his historical significance to their proper relationship with regard to the earth and its history. Processes of rock formation have continued for at least two billion years; man's activities have been in evidence only a few thousand years. As a means of comparison, if the height of the Empire State building were to represent geologic time, the thickness of a nickel placed on the tower would just about repre-

During the heat-treatment of silver specimens for tensile tests it was observed that the bars blistered and became brittle when heated in a hydrogen atmosphere. To check this unexpected result, a wide variety of commercial silvers were heated in hydrogen at 850°C. Only a few of the materials developed blisters, the most severe of which is the tube pictured in Fig. I. The microstructure of a cross section of the tube is shown in Fig. 2. The embrit-tlernent is extremely severe at the edge; the blisters result from the severe deformation of the surface material by large under- lying gas pockets. The effects resulting from hydrogen embrittlement of silver have been observed by numerous investigators over a long time l,2,3 although it was only recently that a clear explanation was offered.4 However, the damage resulting from hydrogen embrittlement has not been generally recognized; and it is of advantage to know more about this phe- 1 References are at the end of the paper.

Copper oxide ore may be leached at all sizes from run-of-mine down to pulp, and consideration must be given to all available methods in determining the most economical one. Heap leaching was evaluated in a pilot plant at Gaspe Copper Mines, Ltd. which was designed to simultaneously leach two 1200-ton dumps of ore. The plant was operated for two years, in part under severe winter conditions. Two modes of leaching were investigated: acid leaching in which sulfuric acid was added externally to the leach solution, and pyritic leaching in which pyrite concentrate was added to the dump and acid was generated in situ by bacterial action. The pilot plant operation is described, and the results are compared with laboratory data obtained in 6-in.-diam columns. It is concluded that pyritic leaching offers certain operating advantages over acid leaching when copper is recovered by cementation in that iron buildup in the solution is prevented.

Quasi-dynamic triaxial compression tests have been done for the first time at confining pressures to 7 kb. The intermediate strain-rate apparatus employs a gas loading cylinder which allows axial strain rates up to 102/sec on a sample 2 cm in diameter and 4 cm long. Samples can be deformed at confining pressures to 7 kb. Strain gages bonded to the loading piston and to the jacketed specimen allow internal measurements of load and sample strains respectively. Westerly granite has been deformed at confining pressures to 7 kb, room temperature, and axial strain rates of 10-2 to 1/sec. An increase of ultimate strength with confining pressure was found as expected. The ultimate strength was also found to vary directly with increasing strain rate; the rate of rise increases with confining pressure. Brittle deformation has dominated the sample behavior. Solenhofen limestone has been deformed at confining pressures to 3 kb, room temperature, and axial strain rates of 10- to 10/sec. The brittle-ductile transition was found to take place at about 1.5 kb confining pressure at a strain rate of 10/sec.

SOME years ago, in the manufacture of seamless tubing from an alloy steel containing 0.07 per cent maximum carbon, 18 per cent chromium and 8 per cent nickel, at the plant of The Babcock & Wilcox Tube Co., a peculiar type of piercing defect was noticed. This defect was definitely associated with certain heats of the alloy and was independent of any of the variables of mill operation and billet-heating condition. A thorough analysis of the defective material yielded but one clue to the reason for its abnormal behavior in piercing and that was its oxygen content as determined by the vacuum fusion method. The oxygen content of the defective 18-8 alloy was found to be from two to three times that of the material that had pierced satisfactorily, and this incited an active interest in the vacuum fusion method for the analysis of alloy steels. After a critical survey of the literature on this subject, and considerable experimentation, an apparatus and technique were evolved that gave a fairly rapid, simple and reliable method of analysis. Samples selected from six years of tube production of 18-8 and other corrosion-resistant alloys were analyzed by this method. This paper describes the procedure and gives a correlation of the oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen contents of a number of alloy steel samples repre-sentative of good and bad tube-piercing quality.

The sands of Snake River, Idaho, have long been known to contain gold. They were worked by some of the first prospectors who came to Idaho, and on the banks still stand the ruins of camps abandoned for years. There are almost always prospectors searching for gold during the season of low water, and it is not an infrequent thing to find a miner of the old type actually panning the sand, or the prospect-hole which he has just left. There is more or less mystery about these miners and their methods of finding the spots where they work. They are always subjects of much speculation to the ordinary traveller. The rich discoveries are, for the best of reasons, concealed until the claims can be taken up. It is difficult to find a place where there are no prospects, but the " colors " are so very fine that they do not offer much inducement to enterprise. The California miner usually values a color at from 5 to 10 cents, often the latter; while on Snake River it would take 100 colors, or even more, to make that amount.

Results of a study aimed at assessing kinetics and mechanisms of the batch agglomeration process in suspension are discussed. A recently developed light backscatter technique which enables the increase of average particle size from 1 to 5000 µm to be followed, was used to determine agglomeration kinetics. Growth curves and agglomerate size distributions were obtained in a stirred vessel for various model systems and operating conditions. Four distinct growth regimes were identified, i. e. the flocculation regime, the zero-growth regime, the fast growth regime, and the equilibrium regime. Further, it was observed that large differences in the occurrence and duration of these regimes resulted from small variations in parameters, such as size distribution of the initial particles and the binding-liquid to solid ratio. Mechanisms that determine the occurrence of the relevant regimes are discussed. The growth process was described in terms of population balance equations. In this way, the growth rate, the equilibrium agglomerate size distribution, and the evolution of the agglomerate size distribution were generated. The agreement with experimental results is satisfactory.

THE main producing oilfields in Peru are located in the department of Piura and province of Thumbes, adjoining Ecuador on the south and west. In the department of Puno, a small field known as the Pirin or Hauncané Area was exploited some years ago by Fred Brown and associates and considerable production obtained. As. shown by the statistical table of production, this area reached its maximum production about 1909; since 1915, operations have been suspended. During the past year, however, the Peruvian Corpn. has acquired some interests in this section. It is reported to have made a few shallow tests with the hope of obtaining sufficient production to supply fuel for its railway lines, which operate between Mollendo on the coast and Puno and Cuzco in the interior. Only partial success has accompanied these efforts; nevertheless, exploitation is being continued. The petroleum of this region contains a paraffin base with small amounts of asphalt. While the gasoline content is small, the kerosene content runs as high as 30 per cent., with the fuel element varying from 50 to 72 per cent. While it is known that the structural conditions of the Huancané area are somewhat complicated, it is believed that exploitation based on a careful interpretation of the geology of the region will eventually yield commercial production of at least modest proportions. In the main fields in Piura and Tumbes, drilling operations were somewhat more active during the first half of the year, than in 1922. The latter half of the year witnessed curtailment, owing to the abnormal situation in the petroleum industry at that time. For the same reason, no attempt was made to obtain the maximum production from existing .wells. Production was pinched down and exportation of crude was correspondingly reduced during the latter half of 1923. Nevertheless, the total production of the Peruvian fields is considerably in excess of that for 1922, as is also the production of the Negritos area alone.
