Because of the attention that has recently been given to the health and safety of miners by various organizations such as the A.I.M.E., The American Congress, Mining Section, National Safety Council, as well as the Bureau of Mines and various state mining departments, your committee on health and safety deemed it best to call attention this year to the mine-accident cause that is by far the most important; namely, injuries due to falls of ground, rock, roof and coal. Each of several members of the committee contributed a brief outline of the importance of this accident cause in his district. While these papers were brief, it would require too much time and space to give them in full, therefore we present an outline of each and summation of all. Report of M. D. Cooper, Division superintendent, Hillman Coal and Coke Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., contributed the following: During the period from 1930 to 1939, accidents from falls of roof in bituminous mines average 54.3 per cent of all accidents. In mechanized mining, there is a tendency toward reduction in this class of accidents because the operator of the machine is usually at a distance of 10 to 20 ft. from the face, whereas in hand load- ing the miner is close to the face during most of the shift. No doubt the use of aluminum and light steel beams supported at regular intervals by jacks, a common practice in mechanical mining, has contributed to the favorable record so far developed. Report of M. H. Fies, De Bardeleben Coal Corporation Milton H. Fies, Vice-President, DeBar-deleben Coal Corporation, Birmingham, Ala., says: With reference to the types of mining, it is suggested that a clear understanding be had as to the character and thickness of the directly overlying strata, with especial consideration to the strength and in some cases an analysis of it. In coal mining, generally speaking, overlying strata higher in silica than others is stronger. In changing from narrow to wide places, the procedure should be experimental, both as to the width and depth of places and as to the nature of the necessary timbering. Since most of the accidents in coal mining particularly are due to falls of roof and coal, this phase of mining should be attacked with vigor There is no substitute for discipline and, in this connection, under present conditions it is important that cooperation by the labor ornanizations- be sought and that a spirit of fairness prevail. Frequent and thorough inspection of all active working places should be made.

Germanium has been rolled in the temperature range of 700o to 800°C. The thickness has been decreased by as much as a factor of four, from a thickness of 0.032 in. to a thickness of 0.008 in. For deformations below 60 pet, the true strain per pass is found to be a constant; from the temperature dependence of this slope, an activation energy of about 2.5 ev is obtained. This energy agrees with that for dislocation climb in germanium . For reductions greater than 60 pet, complete rings are seen in the Lave photographs, new grains are observed in the microstructure, considerable softening occurs, and the hole mobility is very low. This evidence indicates that the recrystallization of gertnanium has occurred. GERMANIUM has been deformed in many ways1 including tension, compression, torsion, and bending since Gallagher2 first described its plastic nature at elevated temperatures. All of these studies indicate that the glide plane in germanium is (111) and that the glide direction is (110). Rolled germanium specimens were used by Kolm, Warekois, and Kulin3 in their X-ray study of deformed semiconductors, but no information is given on the rolling itself. The present experiments deal with the rolling of germanium at various temperatures and for different orientations. In all previous deformation studies, the phenomenon of recrystallization (i.e., the transformation of a single crystal into a polycrystal) in germanium has not been observed4 despite relatively large deformations at elevated temperatures. The proposed reason4 for this was that sufficient energy could not be stored in the deformed germanium lattice. In contrast to the earlier studies this work will present evidence indicating that recrystallization occurs in germanium during rolling at an elevated temperature. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A) Test Specimens. The samples used for rolling were in the form of rectangular parallelepipeds measuring 0.3 in. long, 0.06 in. wide, and 0.035 in. high. They were cut from an undoped single-crystal ingot of p-type germanium with a resistivity of 24.4 ohm-cm, a Hall mobility of 2300 sq cm v-' sec-l, and a hole concentration of 1.1 x 1014 cm"3 at room temperature. The surfaces of the specimens were metallographically polished prior to rolling. The initial dislocation density of the samples was about 10' cm-' as determined by etching in CP4. Two different specimen orientations were used. In the first case, the direction of rolling was parallel to (251), the surfaces in contact with the rolls were of the form (1021, and the normal to the third face was parallel to (211). The following paper aims to make a full explanation of the phenomena of rock jointing. It may be unnecessary to give any general description of what are termed joints in rocks, but Professor Geikie's clear and faithful generalizations are so illuminating that no excuse need be given for introducing the following and other quotations into this paper : " Almost all rocks are traversed by vertical or highly inclined divisional planes termed joints. These have been regarded as due in some way to contraction during consolidation (fissures of retreat) ; and this is no doubt their origin in innumerable cases. But, on the other hand, their frequent regularity and persistence across materials of very varying texture suggest rather the effects of internal pressure and movement within the crust." 1 General Explanation.—In this paper I show that the phenomenon of jointing may to a large extent be accounted for by the pressure of the water contained in the pores of the rock. To understand this, each constituent grain of the porous material may be considered to be separately compressed by the water which submerges it. As all the grains are held together by cohesion, the whole mass is contracted by this pressure. In an indefinitely extended mass, however, there must be a limit to the possible contraction without rupture, because the material is restrained from moving freely by other material around its boundariee. The mass of rock thus becomes broken up. This phenomenon is known as " shrinkage" jointing. The term " shrinkage " is an apt one, if it be understood that the shrinkage of the rock is often brought about by change of stress. Stresses.—The compressive component of water stress on the individual grains is evidently the same as that of the water with which it is in contact. This is so, both before and after the jointing is formed. Before the jointing is formed there is, however, a tensile stress in one or more directions which keeps the material from contracting. At the moment of the formation of joints this stress is equal to the cohesive compressive stress. This is more commonly known to engineers as the tensile breaking stress.

I. Historical. Barite has been mined for many years in various parts of Virginia, probably the earliest mining-operations being in Prince William county, within 600 ft. of the Fauquier county line, about 4 miles south of east from Catlett, a station on the Southern Railway. It is claimed that the mineral was mined here as early as 1845. Mining-operations in Campbell and Pittsylvania counties in the Piedmont region, and near Marion in Smyth county, in the southwest Virginia Valley region, were begun about 30 years ago. The mining and milling of barite on a commercial scale in Tazewell and Russell counties are more recent, and commenced about 15 years ago. II. Geographical and Geological Distribution. Barite occurs in many counties in the State, as shown in Fig. 1, but the industry has been confined to only a few of them. Its occurrence is noted in two of the three major divisions of the State—namely, the Piedmont region east of the Blue Ridge, and the Paleozoic area west of the Blue Ridge. In the Piedmont region the mineral has been mined in the following counties: Bedford, Campbell, Louisa, Prince William, and Pittsylvania. In the region west of the Blue Ridge, composed of Paleozoic sediments, barite has been mined in Montgomery, Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell counties. Of the counties mentioned, Bedford, Campbell, and Pittsylvania of the Piedmont region, and Russell, Smyth, and Tazewell of the Valley region, have been the principal producers. In 1906, operations were confined to five counties—Bedford, Louisa, Pittsylvania, Russell, and Tazewell—but in the first two counties named there was no production, the work being solely development.

BRAZIL has had an industry based on ocean beach deposits of heavy minerals containing monazite, zircon, rutile, and ilmenite for well over 40 years, but except at the very earliest period, prior to 1906, and again during World War 11, has this industry been at all comparable in size with similar operations in other countries. Limiting factors have been neither a lack of reserves nor lack of markets (except for zircon). Although poor local transportation and shipping facilities have handicapped the development in Brazil, these conditions were perhaps equally bad (when mining operations started) in the Indian State of Travancore, and in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia, in which states the principal production of beach deposits of heavy minerals has occurred. The outstanding restraints on the Brazilian industry have been the lower quality of the Brazilian minerals, the relative small size of individual deposits that were known until recently, the lack of interest of Brazilian investors in mining ventures, and the unfavorable climate for investment of foreign capital under Brazilian mining law. The lower quality of the minerals is indicated by the fact that the Brazilian monazite carries only 5 to 6 pct ThO2,*, and the ilmenite 56 1/2 pct TiO2, whiteness of the Australian zircon. An inadequate market for the abundant zircon that will be avail- able in any operation in Brazil is certainly a heavy restraint, since otherwise it could be an important byproduct. The oxide of zirconia, baddeleyite, that has come from Brazil is from other sources. 1 Since the Brazilian beach sands carry only a little rutile, that mineral has not been available as a valuable byproduct to help finance the operations.

Material balance relationships for expansion-type reservoirs above the bubble point have been discussed in recent years by H. N. Hall and M. F. Hawkins, Jr. The former drew attention to the effects of rock compressibility, and the latter to the effects of the compressibility of any interstitial water. Hawkins derived a general relationship which took note of oil, water and rock compressibilities, and then by assuming first, the absence of interstitial water and secondly, no effects due to interstitial water or rock compressibility, obtained relationships symbolically of the same form as those previously derived directly by Hall. Hawkins defined his terms clearly, and noted an approximation, due to the omission of a term involving the product of two compressibilities, made in reaching his final equation. There is, however, possible ambiguity with regard to Hall's written definition of the oil production term. One interpretation would mean that the produced oil and initial oil-in-place, if both required as stock tank barrels, would be obtained by using different formation volume factors in the conversion in order to satisfy the conditions implicit in Hall's formulae. The other would involve an approximation which, if used, was not stated. In both Hall's and Hawkins' studies the effect of the approximation or inconsistency is very slight. Nevertheless, it may be justifiable to give a somewhat more consistent derivation, since the complexity of the final relationships is not thereby greatly increased. Let the initial pore volume be Vi and the volume after a pressure drop of Ap, V. Then V = V, (1 - ?p . cr), where c, is the rock compressibility expressed as change in pore volume/unit pore volume/unit pressure change, and is defined with the initial pressure as base. Suppose that the interstitial water saturation under the initial conditions is Sw. The total volume of interstitial water under those conditions will be ViSw. If the volume of the water after dropping the pressure by ?p is V., this will be given by Vw = ViSw (1 + ?p.c,w), the compressibility of the water being c, which is ex- pressed using the volume at the initial pressure as base. If Boi is the reservoir volume factor of the crude oil for the initial reservoir conditions, and B. the equivalent factor when the pressure has dropped by ?p, with N the initial amount of oil expressed as stock tank barrels. N.Boi = Vi - V,Sw If n is the amount of oil produced (in terms of stock tank barrels) as a result of the pressure drop ?p, the remaining subsurface volume of oil at the lower pressure will be Bw, and Bc can be related to the compressibi:ity of oil and the pressure drop, and if c, is the compressibility factor based on the initial conditions, The relationship derived by Hawkins was case to a standard at the lower pressure, while a term (Ap) had been dropped, because of its smallness arising from its dependence on the products of two compressibility factors. In a previous paper,' the results of some experimental work on the measurement of slippage in the flow of oil and gas mixtures through vertical pipes were presented. The data obtained were correlated and equations were deduced from which the performance of the experimental gas-lift could be predicted with reasonable accuracy. However, attempts to apply the equations to the calculation of pressure drops in actual flowing wells yielded erroneous results. At the time the results of the experimental work were published, no satisfactory explanation could be offered for the failure of the empirical equations to express properly the performance of wells. However, recent work has led to the development of a new hypothesis which presupposes certain conditions affecting the flow of oil and gas in wells. When the proposed equations are corrected to allow for these conditions, an agreement between the observed and calculated performance of the actual wells is obtained which in most cases is quite satisfactory, although it is subject to certain limitations. In this paper, the method of calculating the pressure drop in actual wells is considered, and the application of the method to the design of tubing is discussed. (For nomenclature used in this discussion, see Table 1.) Factors Affecting Slippage and Efficiency At the outset, a few of the principle factors affecting slippage and efficiency in the gas-lift discussed in the previous paper will be reviewed. In the flow of the mixture of oil and gas in a vertical pipe, slippage is the phenomenon of gas moving upward with a. linear velocity greater than that of the oil. Under steady conditions, if given quantities of oil and gas enter the tubing per unit of time, the same quantities of oil and gas per unit time must, on the average, pass every section of the tubing; otherwise, there would be accumulation or depletion of the oil or gas at some sections, and the flow would be unsteady. Interesting results were recently obtained in geophysical prospecting at the Questa mine of the Molybdenum Corpn. of America in New Mexico. This paper describes that survey, which was carried out during October and November, 1927, by the Swedish American Prospecting Corpn. It is hoped that the paper will make it possible for the mining man to form an opinion of the applicability of geophysical prospecting under difficult conditions, showing, as it does, the results when prospecting for small small orebodies with comparatively poor conductivity, in a region of rough topography. Some principles underlying electromagnetic prospecting not known to be published previously will also be given in an elementary way, with special attention to the general structure of the electromagnetic field. Geological. Conditions at Questa The property is situated in the Taos range of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico. About this region, L. C. Graton says:' The main range is made up of Pre-Cambrian granites, gneisses and schists but in the vicinity of Red River igneous rocks of later age are present almost to the exclusion of the older series. These younger rocks are divisible into two groups. The older of the two, probably Pre-Tertiary age, is represented by large intrusive masses of monzonite porphyry, usually containing considerable quartz. The more recent group comprises intrusive and probably effusive dark-colored andesites and coarse andesitic breccias, some of which contain fragments of the monzonite; there are also flows of rhyolite and beds of rhyolite breccia. The evidence regarding the relative age of the andesite and the rhyolite is not wholly satisfactory, but there is little doubt that the andesite is the older. The ore deposits, although occurring more commonly in the monzonite porphyry than in the rhyolite, nevertheless are believed to be genetically related to the rhyolite. They certainly cut the rhyolite or andesite in places, and hence fall in the late Tertiary. The molybdenite at the Questa mine occurs in veins in the alaskite granite porphyry belonging to the older part of the Pre-Tertiary eruptives. THE history of the froth flotation of coal is relatively short. The flotation process was applied to fine-coal cleaning about the time of the end of World War I. Coal flotation finds more widespread use in Europe than in the United States and is used on a commercial scale in nearly all major coal-producing countries in the world. In Fig. 1 the general arrangement of a froth-flotation plant at a British colliery is shown. GENERAL FEATURES OF THE PROCESS Application The flotation process is applicable to the cleaning of the fine sizes, particularly minus 48-mesh coal, although it may be used on sizes as coarse as % in. Since most cleaning processes usually are not effective on sizes smaller than 48-mesh and certainly not effective on minus 100¬mesh, the froth-flotation process offers a solution to the problem of cleaning these sizes. This process consists of agitating the feed pulp with a small amount of reagents, usually 1.0 to 91/ lb. per ton of feed in the presence of water and air; the reagents help to form small bubbles that collect on the particles having a greater affinity for the bubble surface than for the water surface, in this case the fine coal, and the bubbles buoy these particles to the surface to form the froth or concentrate. Slate and shale particles remain wetted and suspended in the water to be drawn off as tailing. The frothers commonly used in coal flotation are cresylic acid, pine oil, and alcohols. More expensive frothers, used in ore flotation, work satisfactorily but do not compare with these cheaper reagents for over-all cost. Collectors used are low-grade petroleum fractions, such as cheap, partly refined fuel oil, or lubricating oil, sometimes mixed with small amounts of kerosene. CHUQUICAMATA, as the Chile Copper Company's mine is known, has the largest developed deposit of copper ore in the world. Indeed, it is improbable that its equal will ever be found. The Union Miniére du Haut Katanga, operating in the Belgian Congo, may some day surpass Chuquicamata in the total amount of copper produced; or one of the companies developing the rich copper region of Northern Rhodesia may ultimately outdo it. But in each instance, the ore will come from a group of mines separated by 80 miles or more; whereas the deposit at Chuquicamata is one vast integral mass containing as a minimum probably 1,000,000,000 tons of ore, averaging better than 8.5 per cent copper, and as a maximum-well, most any reasonable figure might err on the low side. Utah Copper approaches Chuquicamata more nearly than any other in tonnage of exploitable ore; but Utah's ore is less than half as rich. The figure for the aggregate copper content of the reasonably assured ore at Chuquicamata is breath-taking at 50,000,000,000 pounds. Other distinctions has Chuquicamata: It was the first of the Porphyry Coppers to use leaching as the method of treating the ore; its plant cost for producing is lower than that of any of the others, only Braden and Utah being close rivals; and it was worked for its copper long before any of the others. According to an authentic article published in Ingeniería Internacional (May, v 1982) the Incas smelted copper ores from Chuquicamata prior to 1536. Diego de ALnagro, to whom Charles V, King of Spain, generously allotted a one-fourth portion of South America lying south of Cuzco, the Inca metropolis, made an expedition into Chile in 1534. SINCE the first atomic bomb exploded over Japan, a great deal of speculation has been published about the use of atomic energy instead of coal for the production of power. Atomic energy, in time, may displace coal for this purpose, but atomic energy will not displace coal in supplying chemical raw materials to the rapidly expanding carbon-chemicals market. Modern civilization demands large quantities of carbon compounds and the logical source of many of these is coal. Consequently, many progressive operators are considering the possibilities of the utilization of coal as a chemical raw material as never before. Furthermore, the demand for clean, smokeless, and ashless fuels will continue to increase and the only way to handle coal under those conditions is to take it apart, just as crude petroleum is taken apart. One can readily imagine where the petroleum industry would be now if it had insisted on selling customers only crude oil, perhaps emulsified with a little salt water to correspond to the moisture and mineral matter in raw coal. The time seems to be coming at an accelerated pace when mine operators will find that competing for a highly selective fuel market by producing a larger tonnage at smaller cost will be less profitable than to increase the value of a smaller tonnage many fold by producing something more valuable to industry and civilization than raw coal. For example, about 750,000 tons of carbon black selling for $50 to $60 per ton was produced in the United States in 1945. This tonnage is insignificant compared with the total production of coal in the United States, but a very tidy tonnage, together with the coal necessary to operate the process, for any mine operator fortunate enough to obtain a method of producing a better carbon black from coal. From the point of view of tonnage, the manufacture of coke of various kinds and its by-products is at present the most important source of carbon chemicals from coal. Nearly 20 per cent of the coal mined in this country is used for this purpose. A large proportion of the coke is used for the production of iron and steel, but even in this operation a considerable part of the coke is used for a chemical purpose; that is, the reduction of the ore to metallic iron. In addition, large quantities of coke are used in manufacturing many important products that find their way into the market. POSSIBILITIES OF ACETYLENE One of the important chemicals manufactured from coke is calcium carbide, from which many products are made. One of these is acetylene. This hydrocarbon can also be manufactured from natural gas or from waste oil-refinery gas and' these industries will probably offer competition for the manufacture of acetylene. INTRODUCTION OF the several interesting physical properties of clay which have claimed the attention of investigators in recent years, none is more important than the behavior of the material when heated to temperatures above those of dehydration. Some of the problems to be solved are: 1. The mineralogical changes that take place in firing. 2. The relation between temperature and change in constitution, shrinkage, porosity, etc. 3. The importance of the time factor, as duration of firing, either in reaching a given temperature, or of exposure to a constant temperature. Mineralogical Changes As a result of fusion, reactions take place between the constituents of a clay, which results in a reorganization of the mass, and the formation of new compounds. Of the new minerals developed, sillimanite is the one usually recorded, and has been referred to by a number of observers.1 There appears to he a difference of opinion, however, regarding the temperature at which it is formed. Thus. Klein2 notes that sillimanite forms only above. 1300° C., while Mellor claims that it can develop below 1200° C., the difference in results being conditioned by the time factor. In Klein's experiments the test pieces were fired in 12 hr., while in Mellor's, the temperature rose from 800° to 1180° in 24 hrs., and occupied the same time in cooling back to 800°.

FLUID jet mills, employing a compressible fluid to grind materials to the subsieve range, was developed in the early 1930's, and the subsequent acceptance of these units was the result of their ability to pulverize solids that, because of physical properties, could not be processed by other attrition methods, such as ball, pebble, and hammer mills. Also, the fluid energy pulverizer is the only grinding device that will discharge continuously a 5-micron or smaller product. Simultaneous ultra-fine grinding and classification is the widest application of this unit. Jet mills may be used to advantage to reduce particle size of solids suspended in liquids, for coating one material with another, and effecting chemical reactions and changes in physical characteristics other than a reduction in size. Materials that can be processed by this grinding method include nonmetallic and metallic minerals, ores, metals, pigments, insecticides, fungicides, pharmaceuticals, plastics, dyes, and numerous other organic and inorganic products. Grinding principles utilized in the fluid mills available on the market are basically the same, the major difference being in the shape of the, grinding and classification chamber. Grinding in fluid jet pulverizers is accomplished by collisions between particles of the material being ground with the energy being supplied by compressed fluids entering the grinding chamber at high velocities. The "Micronizer" is a fluid energy mill employing a relatively flat cylindrical grinding chamber. Fig. 1 shows general construction details. The mill shown is equipped with a venturi type feeder using a compressed fluid to inject the feed into the grinding chamber. The energy consumed in forcing the feed into the grinding chamber against the mill pressure is, in some cases, as much as 40 pct of the total required for processing. Recent improvements, using a compression screw feeder as shown in Fig. 2, can reduce this to 1 or 2 pct of the total energy requirements. Grinding Grinding, as carried out in the. Micronizer involves the action of gaseous jets emerging from nozzles located in the peripheral wall of the grinding chamber. The axes, of the jets are tangential to a circle of smaller diameter than the grinding chamber as is shown in Fig. 1, and the gases entering the chamber maintain a high rotational velocity. The feed introduced into the mill is accelerated by the rotating gases and is thrown to the outside where a portion, coming in the zone of action of a nozzle, is further accelerated tangentially and inward. Violent collisions occur between the particles so accelerated and other particles circulating at a slower rate in a thin band near the periphery. It is estimated over 90 pct of the reduction in Micronizers occur as a result of impact within a fraction of an inch of the orifice. The Furbero oil field lies in the Gulf coastal plain of Mexico between the important ports of Tampico and Vera Cruz and about one-third of the distance between the two points from the latter (Lat. 20" 22' N., 97" 30' W. Gren.). It is in the State of Vera Cruz, about 14 miles west by south of the village of Papantla in the canton of the same name, and is the most southern of the developed oil fields of the Tampico-Tuxpam region being a distance of 50 miles south by east from the Potrero del Llano field and 42 miles in the same direction from the Alamo field. The field has been developed by the Oil Fields of Mexico Co. and is in the midst of a large block of lands owned or leased by them. Communication is through the port of Tuxpam with which it is connected by a narrow-gauge railway and 6-in. pipe line some 52 miles in length. This field is of more than ordinary interest since it represents a type of oil deposit hitherto unknown. So far as I am aware, no other commercially valuable deposit of oil is known to occur under conditions of accumulation similar to those found here. The igneous nature of the so-called 'sand' encountered in drilling was not recognized until a number of wells had been drilled; and it was not until recently that the geological relations of the sill or laccolith, which gives rise to the accumulation of oil, were known and the so-called 'anticline' was known to be, in part at least, the result of igneous intrusion. Geological surveys in this general region were made in 1900-1901 by W. H. Dalton and in 1907-1909 by P. C. A. Stewart, F. W. Moon, Leonard V. Dalton, and Dr. Max Muhlberg. More recent surveys have been made, however, under the direction of the author, by E. L. Ickes, B. C. Belt, B. Hartley, and Harve Loomis. Notes of the earlier examinations were not available with the exception of the report by Dr. Muhlberg who apparently first recognized the true nature of the Furbero intrusion. Measures appropriate for the control of the silicosis hazard in mining cannot be formulated precisely, but sufficient knowledge1-l9 has accumulated during the past quarter century to permit the suggestion of useful, though partly empirical, rules for its alleviation. The industrial hygienist today recognizes that the peril incurred by the inhalation of harmful dust is a function of two variable factors—the degree of harmful exposure and the specific susceptibility of the exposed individual to pulmonary injury. Control of the danger arising out of prolonged contact with pernicious airborne particulate matter is consequently best exercised by influencing both of these recognized variables. Obviously the problem has two broad aspects—one, medical; the other within the province of the engineer. I—Factors Comprising Degree of Individual Susceptibility Thorough investigations conducted among miners who have labored for years in the presence of recognized silicosis hazards usually reveal an impressive difference in the injury incurred by men whose exposure to dust has been nearly identical. After a quarter century underground, one individual is short of breath and incapacitated with miners' complaint, while a fellow workman suffers no pulmonary embarrassment and is in good health. Physicians ascribe this oft-observed difference in reaction to individual susceptibility and express a universal regret when they deplore the fate that chose to make the predisposed youth a miner rather than a farmer. To trust the health of miners to fate at the present time is even more unfortunate, because many of the factors that influence man's susceptibility to dust are known, and can be accurately determined by competent medical methods. Among the most important factors comprising susceptibility to injury by dust are the anatomical peculiarities of the individual's respiratory mechanism, his physiological response to the inhalation of dust, his previous dust, exposure, the existence of pulmonary infections or other pathological processes in his lungs, his age,

Engineers who are in charge of industrial operations, and their number is legion, sense as much as anyone the present feeling of unrest in the' country and more than anyone else realize the present inefficiency of labor. Undoubtedly the two phenomena are closely correlated and no doubt are due to a multitude of causes which it will be impossible to enumerate. From my experience in mining I estimate that the present efficiency of labor is only about two-thirds of what it was under pre-war conditions. In the mining industry, at least, we have not a large surplus of men looking for work and usually under these conditions men are rather more independent and will not work as efficiently and faithfully as if they felt there were plenty of men ready to take their places. Wages in metal mining have advanced more than the increased cost of normal and sane living. The result is that the men often work fewer days in a month and do not seem to have very much interest in their work while actually engaged in it. Then again, they have been listening to the more or less vague propaganda of the I. W. W. and the radical wing of the socialists, who are harping on the fact that the distribution of newly created wealth is unfair and that the laborer really is not working for himself or his fellow laborers but is carrying on his exertions for the benefit of a small and lim-ited class of exploiters. A continued harping on this view is bound to influence the judgment of even a conservative workman who is not a student of economics and who hears little or nothing upon the other side. I am a great believer in the common sense of the American people and in the long run I do not think that they will be carried away by unsafe doctrines. The trouble with so many of these propagandists of industrial in-equality is that they do not differentiate between production and dis-tribution. Even if we admit that distribution is unfair, unless goods are produced there will be nothing to distribute. A great many unthinking people seem to feel that wages are paid out of a pot which is inexhaustible and do not realize that eventually what comes out of the pot can never exceed what is put into it. The workman is not paid in money but is paid in goods, money as we all know being used simply as a measure of value and a medium of exchange, and that all that can be used to pay the laborer is what he produces.

Development in the upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1944 resulted in the discovery of 19 new fields as compared with 11 during 1943. These discoveries include 10 oil fields, one dry gas field, and eight gas-condensate fields. Drilling During the year 590 wells were drilled as compared with 418 drilled during 1943. Of these operations, 485 wells were drilled in proven fields, with the following results: 281 oil wells, 22 condensate wells, one dry gas well and 141 dry holes. The remaining 105 wells were wildcats, of which 19 were producers. The geological distribution of these discoveries was as follows: In 1944, production amounted to 178,-522,630 bbl., which was an increase of some 31,670,384 bbl. over the 1943 figure of 136,852,246 bbl. These figures include both condensate and oil production, as separate figures are not available. Wildcatting in the area was more successful during 1944 than in 1943 as the following comparison of number of wells drilled illustrates: Discoveries during 1944 Smith Point, Chambers County.—Standard Oil Company of Texas completed its No. I State, sec. 109, on Feb. 15, 1944, in a Frio sand at 8135 to 8146 ft. The well flowed 250 bbl. of 42º gravity oil through an 1/8-in, choke. Gas-oil ratio was 800 to I; tubing pressure, 1100 bbl. Four other oil wells and one gas well were completed during the year. This discovery does not appear to be of major importance. The producing area lies on the upthrown side of a large fault. North Winnie, Chambers County.—Sun Oil Co. completed No. I P. E. Dougherty on Apr. 27, 1944, from the Frio, through perforations at 8757 to 8759 ft. The initial production was 154 bbl. of 38.3º gravity oil through an 1/8-in. choke. Gas-oil ratio Was 2526 to 1; tubillg Pressure, 2280 1b.; casing Pressure, 1225 lb.; total depth, 9519 ft. Three other wells were drilled during the Year. This discovery is on the downthrown side of the major Winnie Stowell fault, and increases in magnitude the already large producing area along this fault. Mayes Field, Chambers County.—Humble Oil and Refining Company's No. I Mary Etta Mayes was completed on Dec. 24, 1944, in a Frio sand, at 8166 to 8169 ft. through 1/4-in. for 768 bbl. of 40.3º gravity

In a paper read by title at the Washingtoil meeting of the Institute,' May, 1905,I discussed at considerable length the geological relations, mode of occurrence, and the genesis of the lead- and zinc-ores of the VirginisTennessee region. The present paper treats of the purely ecorlomic phases of the zinc-ores of the district,—such as methods of mining the ores, their preparation and treatment. The Albemarle coullty mines and plant were discussed in the paper referred to above, and mill not be considered here. Methods of Mining. Until very recently the mining of lead- and zinc-ores in Virginia mas limited wholly to the surface-belt of weathering. The mode of occurrence and the character of the ores to be mined were such as to demand the employment of niethods used in mining secondary concentrated ores. Accordingly, a system similar to that practiced in mining brown iron-ores was employed, being modified to meet the changed conditions. Oxidized or Soft Ores.—Up to the present time practically all the ore mined in the Virginia district has been of the oxidized or soft type;—the silicate, calamine, and the carbonate, smith-sonite; largely the former, which has been localized and concentrated at only slight depths below the surface. Because of the extreme irregularity with which the limestone weathers when stripped of the overlying residual clay, it presents a roughened surface of large and small irregular " chimneys"
