It is always the case with heavy and cheap materials that the area within which they can be economically used depends upon the cost of transportation, and in those days of poor roads and no mechanical means of haulage on them, coal could only be moved a few miles from the mine by any other means than water. The need of better means of transport to the areas west of the mountains had been urged by Washington and many other leaders, but the first turnpike over the Alleghenies only reached the Ohio River at Wheeling, W. Va. in 1818. The James River and Kanawha road reached the Ohio in 1831, that from Winchester, Va. to Parkersburg in 1838, and the road through the Cumberland Gap was completed in 1797. None of these affected the coal industry excepting indirectly by building up some of the river towns which coal could reach. The inadequacy of roads alone to carry the traffic of the rapidly growing interior communities was demonstrated only a few years after the National Pike was completed, and in the early 1820's several of the states embarked upon the construction of a canal system, which had been under discussion for some years. The Erie Canal was opened in 1825 from Lake Erie to the Hudson River through New York; Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland had already started similar projects designed to bring traffic to their principal cities from the interior. The Pennsylvania Canal was started from Columbia, as a railroad extended from Philadelphia to that point, and it followed the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers to Hollidaysburg; thence to Johnstown, a distance of 36 miles, where it consisted of partly railroad and partly inclined planes, the boats being hauled up, and lowered down the planes; from Johnstown the canal followed the Conemaugh, Kiskiminitas and Allegheny Rivers to Pittsburgh, 104 miles. Boats first reached Pittsburgh by this route in 1834. The Chesapeake and Potomac Canal followed the Potomac River from a point above Alexandria above the falls, to Cumberland. This canal was chartered in the eighteenth century and a portion of it was used by traffic in 1800. It was too small to be of much use and was abandoned, and later after many legal and financial vicissitudes was completed to Cumberland, traffic from there starting late in 1850. As developed up to the end of the Great War, an airplane was essentially a mechanism of wood and fabric, joined and held together by metal fittings and fastening. The engine and accessories, wire for wheel spokes and other tension members, and the occasional use of metal for inter-plane struts and the shafts of surface controls required some metal, but essentially it was a wood and fabric structure. Attempts had been made to use metal for other purposes, such as struts in the drag-trussing of wing panels and for short interplane struts, and Junkers had produced an airplane of iron in 1915. By 1917 he was using steel tubes and duralumin sheets, securing noteworthy advantages aerodynamically and from the standpoint of weight and upkeep. He was a pioneer along lines in which progress is still being made. Principles of Airplane Construction The loaded weight of airplanes ranges from 500 lb. for the light plane of which we heard so much a short time ago, to about 40,000 Ib. The great majority of planes range from 2000 to 10,000 Ib. Of this weight from 15 to 30 per cent. is for the dividend-earning load. This percentage is so low that every per cent. saved on the rest of the weight increases the pay load from 3 to 6 per cent,. The economic value of every pound that can be saved in designing or constructing a plane is sufficiently great to warrant spending money on refined methods of structural analysis, materials of superior strength properties for a given weight, methods of manufacture which may make possible the use of refinements in structural design, and the like, to an extent unknown heretofore. The weight of the airplane, without fuel, oil and crew, and pay load, ranges from 50 to 65 per cent. of the total weight loaded for planes suitable for commercial use. It is doubtful if the structural weight will ever be brought down to as low as 40 per cent. for commercial planes. THE present investigation was planned as a survey of the lead-rich portion of the ternary lead-antimony-silver system by thermal analysis. Since, however, a rigorous application of the conventional thermal analytical method is time consuming, an attempt was made to speed up the investigation by reducing the time required for a single thermal analysis. This was done by increasing the rate of cooling to 12° to 18°C. per minute, since such a rate does not permit even an approach to equilibrium conditions, the melt was stirred vigorously by a stirrer operating at the high rate of 665 r.p.m. This proved to be effective in obtaining cooling curves with distinct points of arrest and of excellent reproducibility, which satisfactorily compare with those obtained at a rate of 1" to 2°C. per min. with or without slow stirring (Fig. I). By this method the lead-rich end of the lead-alltimony system and a series of ternary alloys in sections parallel to the lead-antimony side of the ternary system were investigated and it was observed that the two branches of the liquidus curve of the binary alloys did not intersect at the euteotic temperature. An equivalent effect mas observed in the ternary system. The eutectic temperature of the binary lead-antimony system was found to be 252.0°C., which confirms the recent in- vestigation by Pellini and Rhines,1 who determined the eutectic temperature to be 2 51.5°C. The observation that the curves of primarY crystallization of the lead-antimony system do not intersect at the eutectic temperature was previously made by Dean.2 Dean explains the phenomeilon by assuming the existence of a compound Sb4pb. He felt that supercooling was not the cause of the phenomena because he was unable to influence them by inoculation. The X-ray investigation by Solomon and Morris-Jones,3 the metallographic investigations by Stead,4 Charpy,5 Gontermann,6 and Dean, Zickrick and Nix,7 and the numerous investigations of physical properties, definitely disprove the occurrence of any compound. The work of Dean was not confirmed by Broniewski and Sliwoski,8 whose experiments did not show any irregularity and who report a eutectic composition of 13 per cent antimony and a eutectic temperature Of 2500 to 252°C. at a rate Of coo1ing of about 6°C. Per min. Abell Redlich and Adler9 then report a eutectic composition of 12.1 per cent upon reviewing the previous publications and adding a few of their own cooling curves. In 1934 Quadrat and Jiriste10 found from careful analyses of the bottom portion of slowly cooled hypereutectic melts that the eutectic only 11 .4 to 11.5 per cent antimany. In two previous paperslJ dealing with the carbon-oxygcn reaction, and the simultaneous content of each, in liquid steel in the furnace, we have made use of the quantity A[O], defined as the excess oxygen beyond what would be in equilibrium with carbon then present if the pressure of carbon monoxide were I atm.; that is, if [C] X [O] is taken as 0.00222, A[O] = [O] - 0.0022[C] where [O] is the percentage of oxygen by weight as measured by the method described earlier.3 This quantity ?[O] proves to be substantially independent of carbon content over the range 0.08 to I,z per cent, as well as of the basicity of the slag, and is nearly always within the limits o.o15 to o.oz5 per cent when the bath is boiling normally and is in what we have termed a steady state, Apparently it must be at least about 0.014 per cent before boiling occurs; but this threshold value seems to depend upon the ease of bubble formation at the metal-hearth interface, hence upon the condition of the surface of the hearth. In any case, ~(01, on the average, changes considerably following any disturbance of the bath, as by addition of ore. The present paper deals with the average changes in A[O] level following addition of spiegel or crop ends, or after procedures to promote stirring, or by tapping of the steel from the furnace. The observations were made on a large number of commercial heats, and consequently are subject to the influence of various disturbing factors; the results have the compensating merit of showing the consistency obtainable under the limitations imposed by practical operation. Variability of Excess Oxygen in Normal Open-hearth Operation The preceding genera' statements refer to the average value of A[0] particularly in heats that are boiling actively; on individual heats, which are less active, there may be a variable time lag between the disturbance and its effect, which complicates the interpretation of what is going on. For instance, if in the normal refining process boiling is sluggish, the slag usually is gaining Oxygen from the gas phase above it, Or from added Ore$ faster than it is losing oxygen to the metal; Yet when the bath starts to boil vigorously, the opposite condition may prevail for Some time. The consequence of this lag is a variation of A[o], the interpretation of which in a sing1e heat may not be immediately obvious. This condition is illustrated in Figs. I and 2. In Fig. 1, A[0] at the beginning of the test period was near the lower limit of its usual range (dashed lines) in the steady state as a consequence of the lime boil, which had ended about as indicated. The bath is now cold, carbon drop is slow, and the first small orc feed causes only a small rise in A[O]; as the temperature rises and as lime dissolves in the slag, and the bath becomes more active, the

This paper serves to illustrate the application of geophysics to a virtually abandoned mine properly, an application that led to the discovery of an ore body and thus afforded an Opportunity to cOmpare subsequent geologic findings with geophysical data. The work herein described represents, however: more than mere ''case history." It demonstrates that it is possible to obtain satisfactory results by simple means and relatively inexpericnced personnel. The geophysical surveys were made by students as a part of their field assignments in the course of their regular training, and were supervised by Dart Wantland, J. E. Hawkins and R. Maurice 'Tripp. In the course of several seasons an appreciable amount of material was accumulated, which gave graduate students an opportunity for special studies. In this connection, the contributions by L. Massé, R. C. Hyslop, and J. E. Hawkins deserve special mention. The property owners cooperated wholeheartedly in the work, and special thanks are due messrs. J. F. Johnson and S. E. Zelenkov, of the American Smelting and Refining Co., for their interest and for permission to utilize the results of their development work for this publication. Location and Geology The Malachite mine is situated on the northcrn slope of Bear Creek Canyon, 4 miles northeast of Evergreen, I½ miles northwest of Idledale, and 4% miles west northwest of Morrison, in Jefferson County, Colorado. The location (Fig. I) is north of the center of set. 30, T. 45, R. 70 W., at an elevation of about 7500 ft, above sea level, Near the mine the terrain slopes rather uniformly southward at an angle of about 180 pigs. 3 and 7). The geology of the Malachite mine area has been described by J, underhill,' W, Lindgren,2 and J. Boyd.3,4 A map showing surface outcrops and mine workings appears in Fig, 2. the Malachite mine is in an amphibolite belt enclosed in gneisses and schists of the Idaho-Springs formation (probably early Algonkian age). The highly contorted beds are nearly vertical and strike slightly north of west. A series of granite-pegmatite dikes have been intruded almost at right angles into the gneisses and schists and doubtedless are postmineral. While most of the formations are exposed at the surface, a part of the 'lope is covered by slide rock and float, and in the eastern portion by alluvium and creek fill. A quartz-diorite dike cuts through the amphibolite schists at a small angle with nearly vertical dip. The copper sulphides, developed in this dike by magmatic segregation, occur in lenticular form. INTRODUCTION The business arena has dramatically changed for most producers and consumers of commodities. International debt, currency shortages, political upheavals, etc., require corporations today to be sophisticated and flexible enough to change their purchasing and sales techniques in order to maximize returns. Many external factors, such as interest rates, trading partners, currency changes, and government edicts, can have an adverse effect on a company's bottom line. Totally out of a company's ability to control or predict, these. factors force the commodities based corporation to constantly re-evaluate its operating scope and domain. The principle of back-yard only operations and the laissez-faire with blinders style of management is no longer a viable way to run a business. The industrial world has been operating for the past 10 to 15 years as though there were no commodity nor raw material crisis. For developed countries the primary products sector has become marginal, whereas it was central in the first half of the century. A radical change in the method of doing business is necessary to offset a depression in the industrial economy. The risk of collapse may be heightened by a banking crisis caused by massive defaults on the part of commodity producing debtors, whether in the third world or in our own farm producing sector. The raw materials economy has become divergent with the industrial economy. This is a major change in the world economy with tremendous implications in both developed and developing countries for economic and social policies and economic theories. Basic competition issues, such as low labor costs, are likely to become less of an advantage in international trade. In developed countries these costs are going to account for a smaller portion of total costs. The total costs of automated processes are lower than those of traditional plants with low labor costs. Automation in the commodities sector eliminates the hidden but high cost of not processing at capacity created by poor quality, rejects and maintenance for product change-overs. The cost of capital will become increasingly important in international competition. Over the last ten years the U.S. has become the highest cost country in this area. Reversing the U.S. policy of high interest rates and costly equity capital should be a priority for management decision makers. In the rapid industrialization of this century, Japan developed by exporting raw materials, (principally, silk and tea), at steadily increasing prices. Germany developed by leap frogging into the high-tech industries, mainly in electricity, chemicals and optics. The United States did both. Both avenues are blocked for today's rapidly industrializing countries because (a) the deterioration of the terms of trade for primary products, and (b) it requires an infrastructure of knowledge and education far beyond the scope of a poor country. Many explanations exist for the explosion of international money flows. The shift from fixed to floating exchange rates in 1971 may have given initial impetus by inviting currency speculation. The surge in liquid funds flowing to petroleum producers after the oil shocks of 1973 and 1979 was definitely a major cause. There can be little doubt that the U.S. government deficit also played a big role. The American budget deficit has become a massive void, sucking in liquid funds from all over the world and making the U.S. the world's major debtor country. In reality, a trade and payments deficit is actually a loan from the seller of goods and services to the buyer, that is, to the U.S. From now on, the global ramifications of business will have to be treated in economic theory and business policy alike. Economic theory teaches that the comparative advantage factors of a real economy determines operative and financial policy. A theoretical treatment of austenitic Fe-C-Z solutions (where Z represents a substitutional solute) was developed by extending a solution model which was previously applied to austenitic Fe-C alloys. The model assumes that each carbon atom in the solution excludes H interstitial sites from occupancy by other carbon atoms rmd thai otherwise the assembly of carbon atoms is equivalent to a modified Langmuir lattice gas. The results of the treatment provide theoretical justification for a phenomenological expression previously developed to represent the influence of substitutional solutes on the thernlodynamics of carbon in austenitic Fe-C-Z alloys. The expression is: where Kz is a parameter which characterizes the Fe-C-Z system at a given temperature and Xz and xj are the concentrations of substitutional solute and interstitial carbon expressed as atom ratios. The parameter, Kz, was associated with the differ- A number of investigators have measured the influence of various substitutional solutes on the carbon activity in austenitic Fe-C-Z alloys, where Z represents any substitutional solute. Experimental information is available for alloys containing the following substitutional solutes: Mn,' Si,' Ni,2-5 CO,'-', Cr,5, 9-11 CU,4 Al,= v,11, 12 and Ti.13 This information is essential for studying many phenomena in Fe-C-Z alloys, particularly diffusion and diffusion-controlled phase transformations For example the pffprts nf various ence between the interaction energies between carbon atorns and host-lattice atoms in the Fe-C-Z solution and the corresponding energies for the Fe-C solution. The carbon activity in a ternary Fe-C-Z alloy, ac, was obtained in terms of the composition of the alloy and the single parameter, Kz: where y° is the Henry's law constant for the binary Fe-C solution. Both y° and H crm be determined from the data for Fe-C solutions, without recourse to any experimental data for Fe-C-Z solutions. The theoretical treatment was extended to alloys containing several substitutional solutes. By neglecting interactions between the substitutional solutes, an expression for the carbon activity in multicomponent alloys was obtained in terms of the Kz values characterizing ternary Fe-C-Z systems. substitutional solutes on the rate of pearlite growth is explained14 on the basis of their effects on carbon diffusion, which result from their influences on the carbon activity in the solid phases. In addition, recent studies have emphasized the dependence of the pro-eutectoid ferrite transformation15 and other diffusional processes in austenite16 on the influence of substitutional solutes on the carbon activity in austenite. They have indicated the need for suitable analytical expressions to represent such influences. The present authors previously developed general phenomenological expressions to represent the equilibrium partitioning of carbon between Fe-C alloys and Fe-C-Z alloys.'2 The expressions are applicable to all the austenitic Fe-C-Z alloys for which experimental data are available, and are sufficiently simple to recommend their general application. When Hugh Lee Pattinson discovered, in 1829, that the crystals formed during the slow cooling of molten lead were poorer, and the remaining liquid richer in silver, than the original lead, an important step was made in the metallurgy of this metal. Being the first process applicable to the desilverization of low-grade lead bullion, it soon found its way into all European countries having such a product to treat, thereby effecting the saving of many ounces of silver annually which previously had been thrown away. The old hand process was expensive, as viewed from the standpoint of more modern methods; the labor was great and the tonnage was small, but on the other hand the results were fairly satisfactory. This process flourished for some time after the introduction of the cheaper Parkes process in 1852 and it is still in use in a few European smelteries. Only one notable improvement was made on the original process, that of Luce and Rozan at Marseilles, France. It consisted in the application of steam for stirring and the tapping of one-third of the liquid lead, through perforated plates covering the tap holes flush with the bottom of the kettle, thus leaving two-thirds in the form of crystals in the original kettle. This modification considerably lowered the operating costs as it permitted of much larger kettles, an increased tonnage and eliminated much of the slow, hard labor of the hand process. The Luce and Rozan process has persisted in its original form to the present day. Stephen Tredinnick, English born, spent most of his years around the Luce and Rozan plants at Marseilles and elsewhere in Europe, coming later to Eureka, Nev., in 1878, to operate the Luce and Rozan plant at that point. Mr. Tredinnick was a competent Luce and Rozan operator and being devoted to the process he firmly believed that with modifications the costs could be so lowered as eventually to supplant the Parkes process. The title assigned to this paper permits a discussion of one of the most interesting chapters in the history of the American petroleum industry. Nature was kind to man when she prepared crude oil for him in commercial quantities in the hills of Northwestern Pennsylvania. Most of the refining operations we are now accustomed to apply were either not needed or had been carried out by earth processes ages ago. Such technology as was applied dealt with the physical separation of the valuable components in the crude oil and intermediate products and did not need more than mild refining treatments to bring them to marketable quality. • The pioneer refiners were concerned principally with distilling, dewax-ing and decolorizing operations. The products produced were limited in number and the uses to which they could be put were few. Natural products from the very high grade crudes, then plentiful, supplied the domestic demand and no other markets were open. As time passed, other producing fields were discovered and crude oils of lower natural quality were made available. To refine these grades to a quality expected by buyers, refinery practice had to be changed and new methods found. At the same time the accidental discovery that crude residues could be cracked by dry distillation at atmospheric pressure to produce a much larger amount of lamp oil than had been customary, opened a new vista for the industry. Export kerosene soon became the leading revenue product for all refiners and considerable new technic was added to refinery practice. High sulfur crude oils from Ohio next made their appearance, causing the development of the first commercial desulfurizing process, the sodium plumbite treating method for "sour" lamp oil stocks and the application of fine earth for the removal of "flock." Some improvements in methods of handling lubricating oils and cylinder stock fractions of crude were worked out, but in general, it can be said that the closing decade of the last century found the industry in a stabilized condition. One of the most striking features of the coal series passing from peat through brown coal, lignite, etc., up to anthracite is the gradual reduction of moisture content with the increased coalification of the original plant material. Thus drained peat from a bog may contain 90 per cent water, brown coal contain 50 per cent, lignite 30 per cent, while a bituminous coal may contain only 1 per cent moisture. Moisture, therefore, is one of the important factors to be considered in coal classification, especially with the lower rank coals. With bituminous and higher rank coals the moisture content is less satisfactory for classification; it may even pass a minimum value and then increase with increasing rank to anthracite and superanthracite. Coal in an undisturbed seam contains moisture which is an integral part of the coal, but it may also be wet with free, underground water percolating through the seam. Only the former must be considered in evaluating the moisture content of the coal for classification purposes; this will be called the "true moisture" of the coal. When the seam is mined and sampled the sample taken may show the true moisture; on the contrary, it may contain in addition free mine water or, especially in dry, well ventilated mines, it may contain less than the true moisture. Coal contains unstable organic compounds which may decompose, with the production of moisture, when the coal is exposed to air at ordinary temperatures, or is heated with or without exposure to air. The potential moisture of a coal therefore is higher than its actual moisture. The lower the rank of the coal, the greater its instability, as a rule, and the greater the care necessary to avoid oxidation or decomposition in any investigation of moisture content. The majority of coal workers have preferred, on account of the difficulty in evaluating the true moisture of a coal, and for other reasons, to classify coals by analyses calculated to the dry-coal basis. A number of workers familiar with lower rank coals have recently insisted that the classification of such coals can be satisfactory only if analyses on the moist-coal basis are employed. The moisture-holding capacity of coal is therefore intimately connected with coal classification, and in this paper a procedure is outlined for determining the true moisture of a coal,

The first presentation of this paper was before the Pennsylvania Anthracite Section of the Institute in May, 1914, after which a committee was selected to verify and add to the data contained in the original paper. The author is indebted to G. W. Engel, H. W. Montz, R. V. Norris, and H. H. Otto, of this committee, for additional information. I also wish to acknowledge the courtesies extended me by a number of the mining companies for information relative to accidents, systems of proving, and mining practice. The paper should bring forth additional criticism and recommendations, which will be of value in establishing future practice relative to this subject. Throughout the northern anthracite field of Pennsylvania glacial and alluvial deposits of sand, gravel, and clay exist in varying quantities. The extent and character of these deposits are described by N. H. Darton in Bulletin 45 of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, entitled, Sand Available for Filling Mine Workings in the Northern Anthracite Basin. It is estimated that the northern field contains 10,000,000,000 tons of these deposits, or a sufficient quantity to cover the 176 square miles of coal area to a depth of about 25 ft. These deposits of sand, etc., overlying the coal measures attain a maximum depth of more than 300 ft., and are usually saturated to such an extent as to render them semi-fluid. It is this condition of fluidity that limits the mining of coal seams cropping in or in close proximity to these deposits, and it is in the interest of safer and more efficient mining methods under these conditions that the study of this subject is here presented. The dangers incident to mining under deep deposits of sand have long been realized by operators in the northern anthracite field, and much has been done to prove the contour of the rock and vein croppings underlying these water-bearing deposits of sand and gravel. Although, as far as we know, the accidents of the past have not resulted in the loss of life, except in two instances, yet nearly all were attended with more or less miraculous escapes of men working in the vicinity of the breaks, so that the probable existence of pot holes, etc.,

The remarkable increase in the distribution of the small underfeed stoker for use in furnaces and boilers in small industrial plants, apartment houses and homes has brought producers and distributors of bituminous coal to consider the problem of which coals and which sizes are best suited to this market. Many papers have also appeared, mostly in the trade journals, discussing the problem of the combustion of various coals and various sizes of coal in small stokers. Much difference of opinion has been apparent in these articles; due often, it would appear, to a misunderstanding of the fundamentals of the process of combustion in the stoker fuel bed. During the past year and a half, a program of research has been conducted at Battelle Memorial Institute: (1) On the process of combustion in the fuel bed of the small stoker, sponsored by Battelle Memorial Institute, and (2) on the relation of the characteristics of bituminous coals to their performance on small underfeed stokers, sponsored by Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. As a result of this program of research, two publications have been made, one1 dealing with the problem of clinker formation, and the other2 with the relation of the size of the coal fed to the stoker hopper to that of the coal that reaches the retort to be burned. The experimental research on the relation of size to the performance of the coal is being actively continued. A publication of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. presenting the data obtained on the performance of several sizes of four typical bituminous coals will appear shortly. Because of the early appearance of that publication, the present paper includes few numerical data. The purpose of this paper is to follow the coal from the hopper through the furnace with a discussion of the various actions that occur, in the hope that it will lead to a clearer understanding of the relation of the type of coal, the size of coal, and other characteristics, to the performance. The authors do not pretend to have obtained the answers to all the complex questions involved; many unanswered questions will be proposed on which future research work is planned.

Cold rolling by 50 pct a A1-4 pct Cu alloy containing many 0' plates has been found to accelerate markedly the transformation of 8' to 0 upon further aging. Although the basic mechanism of this transformation remains unchanged by plastic deformation, the nuclea-tion kinetics of 8 become appreciably more rapid and also less dependent upon temperature. Particularly at lower aging temperatures, rounded idiomorphs replace several faceted rnorphologfes. The rates of growth of 9 idiomorphs in deformed specimens aged at 300°C are appreciably more rapid than simple volume diffusion control allows. This observation is shown to be explained by an excess vacancy, rather than by a dislocation Piping mechanism of growth. ThE rather complex phenomenology of the 8' —8 transformation in Al-Cu alloys has been recently elucidated in considerable detail by means of transmission electron microscopy.'-4 This technique was also employed in the present investigation in order to examine the effects of plastic deformation upon the transformation of 8' to 8. The mechanism of the transformation in undeformed Al-Cu alloys has been established as the following sequence of events.1"4 The first step is the nucleation of 9 at (Y:8' boundaries. Nucleation of a 0 crystal takes place, however, at only a very small proportion of the 8' plates present. Each 0 crystal simultaneously consumes the host 8' plate and the a! in the immediate vicinity, with growth into a being the rate-controlling process. The remaining 8' plates are then dissolved as they fall under the concentration shadow of the growing 8 crystals. The evidence on the effects of plastic deformation upon these processes is intriguing, but much less detailed. The careful X-ray studies of Graf and Guinier have shown that the aging times required to form detectable amounts of 8' and 8 are reduced by prior cold working. Thomas and Nutting confirmed these results by replication electron microscopy. Nile-shwar,* on the other hand, reported that creep deformation decreases the rate of formation of 0. While this difference may have been caused by the use of concurrent rather than successive deformation and ag- ing, the X-ray technique which he used was able to monitor only the 0 phase. It is thus possible that the times needed to form 8' were increased moreg than the kinetics of 8' — 8 transformation were accelerated. At 90 pct deformation by cold rolling, Graf and Guinier found that the usual 0' —0 8 sequence is reversed: 0 forms first. von Heimendahl 10 confirmed this result with transmission electron microscopy. Pollard and Nutting, 11 and more recently Driver and Barrand, 9 having used the same technique, report that 9 also forms first during creep deformation. In the present study, the maximum amount of deformation was limited to 50 pct reduction by cold rolling in order to insure that 8 formed principally by the decomposition of . I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES This investigation was conducted on an Al- 3.93 pct Cu alloy, prepared as previously described. 4 Morphological and crystallographic effects of plastic deformation were studied in specimens annealed 6 hr at 548°C, quenched, and then aged for either 3 or 8 hr at 250°C to form large numbers of 0' plates. The thermoelectric power and electrical conductivity of a series of liquid alloys of thallium were determined in order to study the relation of chemical bonding to semiconduction in liquids. The results indicate metallic behavior for the alloys of thallium with arsenic, antimony, and bismuth, while the sulfides, selenides, and tellurides indicate semiconduction. The results are compared with the Properties of the same alloys in the solid state. This work supports the observation that long-range order is not a necessary requirement for semiconduction. PREVIOUS work1,5 has shown that some sulfides and oxides behave as semiconductors in the liquid state. Although the band theory has been of great help in understanding the properties of solid semiconductors, its quantitative application to liquids is difficult. The very existence of liquid electronic semiconductors shows that ascribing the discrete structure of the energy spectrum to strict lattice periodicity, or long-range order, is not always satisfactory. Rather, the short-range order determines the structure of energy levels and the width of the forbidden gap and, consequently, the concentration of free holes and electrons. This is borne out by the analysis of data accumulated by Regel and coworkers.6 The similarity of electronic structure of liquid and solid phases of certain liquid metals was pointed out by Knight et a1.,7 who examined nuclear resonance in solid and liquid Li, Na, Rb, Cs, Mg, Al, Ga, Sn, and Bi. They found noticeable changes in the electronic structure upon melting only in the cases of bismuth and gallium. They concluded that "a liquid metal possesses a band structure which is very like that of the solid, provided the short-range structure is not altered during melting." In semiconductors in which the near-neighbor arrangement remains the same on fusion, the material would be expected to retain its semiconducting properties. The quantum theory of semiconductors, with its band structure of energy levels, is linked exclusively to long-range order. Furthermore, it has limited usefulness in predicting new semiconductors. Many sulfide8-12 have made comparisons of properties on the basis of crystal structure or the position in the periodic table, both methods involving the same factors as chemical bonding. Mooser and Pearson8"10 have pointed out that crystal structure depends on chemical bonding, and that this bonding is a property of the atoms themselves. As the periodic arrangement of the atoms offers an easy comparison of such factors as atomic weight and number of valence electrons it provides clues to expected similarities of bonding for various elements or groups of elements. This approach has led Mooser and Pearson to formulate their valence-bond theory of semiconduction, in which they define a semiconducting bond. These authors state that "semiconductivity is the result of the presence in a solid of predominantly covalent bonds. These lead, through the process of electron sharing, to completely filled s and p orbi-tals in the valence shells of all atoms of elemental semiconductors while in semiconducting compounds only one atom of any two bonded together need acquire closed s and p orbitals. The presence of empty 'metallic' orbitals in some atoms of a compound does not destroy the semiconductivity provided that these atoms are not bonded together; it may, however, give rise to pivoting resonance in

RECENTLY, a description of the wartime work in this laboratory on the U-Si phase diagram was published. This diagram was available earlier in the open literature; as were Zachariasen's crystal structure identifications for the compounds in the system. The uranium end of the phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. The most recent work on this system has emphasized the peritectoid E phase, of particular interest for a number of reasons. The early work provided evidence of this phase's resistance to corrosion in water and of its slight ductility. Further information on these properties has been obtained here. Work elsewhere4 has provided evidence of stability under irradiation. This body-centered-tetragonal phase is relatively isotropic compared to the more usually applied a or ? uranium phases. Unlike the other compounds in this system, it contains no Si-Si covalent bonds.3 In addition, consideration on the basis of Pauling's concepts leads to the conclusion that in the E phase, uranium has a higher valence than in any of the other phases. Definition of the composition of the ? phase has been of prime concern in the study of this alloy. Evidence is presented below that its silicon content is slightly higher than that of stoichiometric U8Si, the composition frequently assigned this phase on the basis of Zachariasen's identification. This work on the composition required careful attention to the method of dissolving the alloy for analysis, since apparently low silicon contents could be found under certain conditions, see Appendix. Preparation: Melting, Casting, and Heat Treatment—Almost all the samples were from castings with a diameter of 13/4 or 2 in. and about 1 ft long, weighing 10 to 15 lb. The U-Si charge was melted by heating to about 1650°C in an induction heated vacuum furnace. Beryllia crucibles were used at first, but were replaced by zirconia-washed graphite as the technique of keeping the carbon content low enough (about 500 ppm) was mastered. The alloy was bottom-poured at about 1650°C into graphite molds. A few small buttons, weighing no more than 50 g, were prepared in a small arc melting unit.' Since cast material has a preponderance of uranium and U8Si2, heat treatment is necessary to ob-tain the ? phase by the solid-solid peritectoid reaetion. Once obtained, the ? phase is stable to room temperature, obviating the need for speeial attention to the method of cooling after epsilonization, see Fig. 1. It was found desirable to epsilonize at 800°C for a week. For some purposes, in which residual uranium and/or U8Si2 are tolerable, shorter periods may be adequate. The temperature of 800°C is not critical, since essentially the same results were obtained from 785° to 825°C. Further departure from this epsilonization range is inadvisable.

AN understanding of mineralizing solutions and how they carry and deposit metals is of prime importance to students of ore deposits. Lindgren states: "The whole problem surely is very complicated. One difficulty is that we know so little about the stability field of ore minerals."1 Lindgren further states: It is believed that they [the solutions] were in small part oxidized to sulphates, for instance, but in large part they were composed of hydrogen sulphide, alkaline sulphides and various halogen compounds. Doubtless, however, free carbon dioxide was present. Becker's view of the double sulphides as important constituents of the solutions probably holds good. In the fourth edition of Mineral Deposits2 Lindgren had changed his views somewhat: From the work of Day, Allen, Shepard, and others, it would seem probable that many of the volcanic gases are acid when given off but are in unstable equilibrium, and could not have preserved this acid character after having been long in contact with the surrounding rocks. It is believed that they were in small part oxidized to sulphates, for instance, but in larger part they were composed of hydrogen sulphides, alkaline sulphide, and various halogen compounds. Doubtless, however, free carbon dioxide was present. Becker's view of double alkaline sulphides as important constituents of the solution probably holds good. The writer wonders if progress would not result from an attack on the problem in steps, the steps to contribute to the attack on the whole. The initial step would deal with the simpler bodies of supposed magmatic (hydrothermal) origin, that is, those composed essentially of silicates, oxides, sulfates, and sulfides. The following discussion attempts to develop one step of a method that was proposed on a more comprehensive scale in 1929 by the writer and W. S. Burbank.3 The accompanying partial table (Table I) of the electromotive series is from a table distributed by Merck & Co. Inc., manufacturing chemists, prepared in turn from Fundamental Chemistry.& The electromotive arrangement brings together elements that in hypogene ore deposits occur: 1) in oxygen combination only; 2) in combination with sulfur as well as with oxygen; and 3) as sulfides, arsenides etc., and as native metals, see Table 11. The writer clearly recognizes that he is not qualified to discuss the formation of ore deposits as a chemical problem, but he feel that some of the relations that are met by the geologist can well be stated with the hope that the chemical explanation will be forthcoming. By consideration of a group including mainly the elements oxygen, hydrogen, sulfur and iron, complications are avoided, especially with elements of the lower electromotive group. The results can only contribute to the solution of the problem, not to the completion of it. The pH and Eh of the solutions and also temperature probably determine what minerals form. The mineral groups that contain elements high in the electromotive series are alumino-silicates, titanites, simple silicates, spinels, oxides, carbonates and sulfates, in all of which the elements are combined with oxygen. These groups are also recognized as the general order of temperature at which the minerals start to form, see Table 11. At low temperature are sulfides, arsenides, antimonides, sulfo-salts, and native metals, in all of which the elements are characteristically not combined with oxygen. The intermediate temperature group contains elements that form both oxygen compounds and sulfur compounds.

INTRODUCTION General Quebec Cartier Mining Co. (QCM) , Canadian subsidiary of U . S. Steel Corporation, operates two iron ore concentrators at the North Shore of Quebec, Canada. In its own operation at Mount-Wright, over 45 million tons per year of crude ore are ground, fully autogenous in six 32' x 11-1/2 Dominion Engineering mills. At Fire Lake/Lac Jeannine operation, property of Sidbec Normines Incorporated (SNI), over 11 million tons per year of crude ore are now ground, fully autogenous, in twelve 18' x 5' Hardinge mills. The Lac Jeannine concentrator was originally constructed by Q.C.M. in 1960 and. was since operated, in beneficiating the Lac Jeannine ore deposit until fully depleted in 1977, at an annual capacity of 18 million tons of crude per year. In 1976, the new company, Sidbec Normines, was incorporated by Sidbec Corporation, British Steel Corporation and Quebec Cartier Mining Co., in proportional holding of approximately 51 to 41 to 8 percent respectively. Since the acquisition of the Fire Lake ore deposit and Jeannine concentrator by the new company, QCM has continued managing the mine and concentrator operaions for S idbec Normines Inc . Flow-Sheet Design Jeannine concentrator comprises twelve identical mill lines grinding the ROM from 8" top size to 14 mesh nominal size range. Driven by 600 H.P. motor at 13.4 RPM corresponding to 73% critical speed, each mill is operated in a closed circuit with two 5' x 12' vibrating screens dressed with 2.5 x 25 mm slot opening cloth. The ground product or screen undersize at an average grade of 33.4% Fe is beneficiated by gravity separation to produce 66.5% Fe concentrate grade at 42.7% weight recovery. At the rougher stage, each mill line con-tains 128 Humphrey 13- 1/2" pitch spirals which produce a final tailing, middling and concentrate products. The rougher concentrate - so produced - is classified by 64 Humphrey pocket sizers into an underflow, which is a final concentrate product and an overflow which is further upgraded by 64 cleaner spirals. The cleaner concentrate together with the pocket sizer 's underflow are dewatered on a 13'[6] horizontal filter. Aluminum powder is a well-known article of commerce and in various forms has been marketed widely for use in paint, for pyrotechnic purposes and for exothermic mixtures. For a number of reasons, however, aluminum powder has not been employed extensively in powder metallurgy, although a great many proposals along this line have been offered. Aluminum and alumiuum-alloy powders oxidize readily upon exposure to air and the thin film of oxide (or hydroxide) thus formed is highly refractory, in that ordinary gaseous reducing agents such as hydrogen or carbon monoxide do not reduce the oxide to metal at temperatures below the melting point of aluminum. It has been thought that the presence of these films of oxide on aluminum particles would interfere markedly in powder metallurgical work and a number of suggestions have been made, either for preventing the formation of the film through the production of the powders in inert or reducing atmospheres, or for the removal of the oxide by means of powerful reducing agents, including "nascent" or atomic hydrogen released from metal hydrides. A second and more serious difficulty in the use of aluminum and aluminum-alloy powders in powder metallurgy resides in the fact that during compression such powders tend to adhere or cold-weld to the die walls, thus interfering with the formation and ejection of a compact. A third difficulty, which has been encountered only with aluminum-alloy powders, is their hardness when compared with elemental aluminum. Certain of these powders are susceptible to age-hardening, which further hinders the formation of strong green compacts. These conditions are particularly true of atomized aluminum-alloy powders. Even in the annealed condition, plastic deformation of alloy powders under pressure is low when compared with unalloyed powders. This fact, coupled with the lower corrosion resistance of the alloy powders. is probably the significant factor in our failure to obtain strong sintered pieces. Methods of Puoducing the Powder Many methods have been proposed for manufacture of aluminum powder, only a few of which are used commercially. Several of the more important processes include: (I) atomization of the molten metal; (2) mechanical pulverization and other types of comminution; and (3) graining, in which molten aluminum is stirred during freezing. For pigment and certain pyrotechnic uses aluminum flake powder is desirable, because of its greater proportion of surface to volume; and large quantities of such material are made by a procedure that involves stamping or ball milling. This is a critical examination of the theory that the amount of carbon necessary to form the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid is lowered by the addition of any carbide-forming element. Although this theory has been built up over a long period of years, it appears, in the light of recent published investigations upon the ternary constitutional diagrams of iron with carbon and other alloying elements, to be no longer tenable. A survey of these new results, summarized below, shows that (as is known) some metals lower the carbon content of the iron-carbon (carbide) eutectoid, whereas others raise it, but (as not heretofore clearly set forth) some first move the eutectoid in one direction and then, at higher concentrations, shift it in the opposite direction. Moreover, these differences in behavior exist even among the common alloying metals classed as carbide formers. PART I Influence of Body-centered Cubic Elements The effects of the various body-centered cubic metals (chromium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, columbium and tan. talum) are reviewed individually. Iron-carbon-chromium System.—In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Chromium, Kinzel and Crafts1 concluded that the carbon content of the eutectoid is lowered by increasing the chromium content. The quantitative influence of chromium on the eutectoid point of iron-carbon alloys was shown by Monypenny2 (Fig. I) and no data have been forthcoming to refute his findings. Iron-carbon-tungsten System.—Gregg,3 in the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Tungsten, accepted the data showing that tungsten decreases the amount of carbon required to form the eutectoid. The influence of tungsten on the eutectoid percentage of carbon as determined by Oberhoffer and Daeves4 is shown in Fig. 2; these results have received general approval. , I ron-carbon-molybdenum System.—In the monograph on Alloys of Iron and Molybdenum, Gregg5 reviewed the work of Guillet,6 Swinden,7 and ReedI8 all showing that molybdenum lowered the carbon content of the eutectoid, whereas Takei9 contradicted this conclusion. Svetchnikoff and Alferova,10 a little later, showed that large additions of molybdenum shift the eutectoid to the right. These last-named investigators found that molybdenum, up to 1.2 per cent, shifts the pearlite point and the point of maximum solubility of cementite in the gamma phase only slightly in the direction of lower carbon content; on the other hand, increasing amounts of molyb-S

INTRODUCTION Created in 1944 to help rebuild those economies, principally in Europe, which were seriously damaged or destroyed during the Second World War, the World Bank--or to use its correct name, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development-began its operational phase by making a loan to the Government of France to accomplish two tasks: (i) to import coal for space heating purposes; and (ii) to buy new machinery and equipment to help rehabilitate its coal mines. Once the thrust of reconstruction in postwar Europe was largely accomplished, the World Bank Group (for today the World Bank has three separate lending windows) turned to mobilizing funds to improve living standards in developing countries, which remains its primary goal today. Over this period of time, the World Bank Group has continued to assist the world mining industry in various ways and, since 1955 the World Bank Group has financed mining or mineral processing projects with loans/credits totalling $1.5 billion. The World Bank Group consists of two institutions--the World Bank itself and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), which was founded as a separate institution in 1956 and three separate lending windows--the World Bank, the International Development Association (IDA), and IFC. The World Bank loans are provided at commercially-related interest rates but have grace periods usually of up to 3 to 5 years and repayment periods ranging from around 15 to 20 years. Since the World Bank raises its operating funds on the international capital markets in varying currencies and in varying interest rates, it relends a basket of currencies at floating interest rates which are fixed every six months to reflect the Bank's own borrowing cost. At the present time, the interest rate is just below 10% per year and in addition, a one-time front-end fee of 1/4 of 1% is charged. Also, a commitment fee of 3/4% per year is charged on the undisbursed amount of the loan itself. For loans to industrial and mining projects, it is normal to charge an additional guarantee fee of 1 to 1.5% in addition to the annual interest rate. This guarantee fee is payable to the government of the country in which the project is carried out since, by its charter, the World Bank is required to have the guarantee of the host government for each loan made in a specific country. By far the greatest source of lending funds within the World Bank Group is that of the World Bank itself and for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1984, the World Bank approved loans totalling $12 billion. The second lending window within the World Bank Group is IDA which performs the same functions as the Bank itself and has the same staff. Nevertheless, its loans (called credits) are made on much softer terms and are made to the poorest nations only. IDA funds are subscribed by the wealthier countries, usually as grants, and these are relent as credits to those countries with the lowest per capita income. IDA credits are made for 50 year periods, including 10 years of grace, to the government itself. The credits are interest free, but there is a service charge of 3/4% per year on the amount withdrawn and outstanding to defray the administrative costs of IDA. Credits approved during fiscal 1984 totalled $3.5 billion. The third lending window is IFC. While IFC is a separate corporation and operates quite separately from the World Bank and has its own staff and regulations, it works very closely with the World Bank on its overall approach to the mining sector and to a particular country. IFC's mission is essentially to supply venture capital and to stimulate development of the local private sector in capital markets as well as to promote the international flow of private capital to developing countries.
