FACED with processing an increasing volume of raw material through its existing plant, early in 1955 Calaveras Cement Co. of California considered incorporating liquid cyclones in its raw mill grinding circuits. One of many problems was the prospect of handling larger volumes of finished slurry through existing pipelines. Fixed capacities of the mechanical classifiers also placed limits on plant expansion.

Wildcat drilling operations in Montana during 1933 did not yield any discoveries of oil or gas that were of major importance. There was comparatively little drilling in the older proven fields, as most of the interest was centered in the Cut Bank field, where 44 wells were completed. The total number of wells completed in the state during the year was 79, of which 62 were productive of either oil or gas.

Geophysical exploration for engineering purposes is conducted to decrease the risk in encountering site uncertainties. Such studies are needed in construction of underground facilities. Current responsibilities, opportunities and challenges for those with geophysical expertise are defined. Radial layout's guiding principle is the grouping under one roof of the operating processes which require continuous supervision. Separate treatment sections are isolated by outside stockpiles fed with radiating conveyors. Hence the name "radial" layout. Many plants are designed with "linear" layout where successive operating stages are dotted like beads along a string of conveyors.

Higher education is in serious trouble in the United States. With increasing costs threatening to create a taxpayer's revolt, serious thought must be given to determining whether or not we can continue to afford our present educational policies. Disinterested students with little aptitude are pushed into over- crowded universities by well-meaning parents, but they lack real objectives beyond achieving that great status symbol-the degree. Advanced degrees are heaped upon the baccalaureate degree, and the pursuit of the pure and social sciences continues at the expense of engineering and technology.
