A PERMANENT assay office is commonly established as part of the general plant equipment of operating gold and silver properties, but during the development stage of a mine, the cost of such an office is usually so assay work must be done elsewhere. THE John Fritz Gold Medal for 1929 was presented to Herbert Hoover at the Executive Mansion on April 25, at a luncheon given by Mr. Hoover to present and past members of the Board of Award, preceding medalists, and presidents and secretaries of the American societies of Civil, Mining and Metallurgical, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineers. The presentation party of forty engineers which gathered at the White House, from all parts of the United States, was made up of past presidents of the four senior national engineering societies that established the John Fritz Medal and included five men who had received the medal in previous years. These former medalists were Edward Dean Adams, J. J. Carty, J. Waldo Smith, Elmer A. Sperry and Ambrose Swasey. This medal is the highest honor bestowed by these four national engineering societies, having a membership of 60,000. It is awarded not oftener than annually for "notable scientific or industrial achievement, without restriction on account of nationality or sex." In accordance with custom, the award to Mr. Hoover was made tentatively and without announcement in October, 1927, and was formally con- firmed and announced one year later.

These will enable him to (1) arrange the minerals of a selected group of base metal mining districts in the order of their typicalities and (2) compute the degree of mineralogic association between the model so derived and a district external to the model. Equations capable of representing combined first -and second-stage creep behavior include the Andrade, Cottrell-Aytekin, Garofalo, and de Lacombe equations along with a third-degree polynomial in t1/3. Employing some recent high- temperature creep data for arc-cast tungsten the effectiveness of these expressions was evaluated. It was found that, in this instance, the most accurate representations were afforded by the third-degree polynomial in t1/3 and the de Lacombe equation. Also noted was the fact that the Andrade equation gave results just slightly inferior to those obtained with the third-degree polynomial, definitely better than those due to the Cottrell-Aytekin equation, and slightly superior to those furnished by the Garofalo equation. EXPRESSIONS designed to describe combined first -and second-stage creep behavior must possess certain specific characteristics. At time zero the equation must reduce to a strain value corresponding to the instantaneous deformation on loading. Then in the early moments following load application transient-creep behavior must be described to reflect a creep rate which constantly decreases with time. And finally at larger time values linear (or at least nearly linear) strain-time behavior must be accounted for to yield the steady state or minimum creep rate. Some equations, such as the one based on the parabolic creep law, yield fairly satisfactory results in transient analyses but are not effective at all when combined first- and second-stage data are to be analyzed. Other equations give equally accurate results in both instances although in general the complexity of the equation is slightly increased. For example the Andrade1 equation: has found fairly general application in expressing first-stage creep behavior. Furthermore the contribution of the exponential term becomes more and more prominent as the time increases and causes this equation to exhibit a point of inflection at large values of time. With a proper selection of equation constants the curve can be made fairly flat in the region of the inflection point indicating a desirable equation form for combined first- and second-stage creep analysis. Another equation form with the proper characteristic is that of Cottrell and Aytekin:2 e =a +bt1/3 +ct [2] Obviously as time increases the first derivative of this expression approaches a constant value to suggest application to combined first- and second-stage creep analysis. Similarly a third-degree polynomial in t1/3: e -a + bt1/3 + ct2/3 +dt [3] has the same characteristics. Expressions of this type have been shown3 to be very effective in the analysis of transient-creep behavior and the fact that the first derivative has the same characteristic as Eq. [2] suggests use in the combined analysis.

A unique method of measuring weight loss as a function 3 of time, with a sensitivity of 10-5 grams, while leaching copper minerals with a flowing acid leach solution has been developed. Kinetic results obtained coupled with visual and microprobe analyses show topochemical reaction for the leaching of chrysocolla with sulfuric acid. The kinetics follow a shrinking core model and show ion diffusion through a product layer, chemical reaction at the unreacted core interface and mass transfer through the boundary layer as being important.

In experiments for the production of steel the principal problem has always been the introduction into, or removal from, the iron of a definite quantity of carbon. Although the solution of this problem had engaged a more or less blindly and empirically directed effort for a long time, it was only with the development of analytical chemistry that the rôle which carbon plays in the constitution of steel was disclosed in its full significance, and that many of the problems confronting the steel-maker were thereby more clearly defined than before. For a long time, and to a certain extent even to this day, the percentage of carbon in steel has been the controlling means of deter mining its quality and hardness. In many cases the percentage of carbon alone has been relied on for judging large consignments, such as the large deliveries of wire-billets and blooms to America during the past twenty years; and though to-day the influences of the other constituents are recognized and many other considerations are taken into account, and though, moreover, some special steels, such as the Hadfield manganese steel, apparently dispense to a certain extent with the assistance of the carbon, yet fix our Bessemer, Thomas, Siemens and crucible steel the carbon still remains one of the most important constituents, and I venture to say it is indispensable. In order to produce in the Bessemer converter a steel of a certain required percentage of carbon, two methods, as is well known, present themselves. By the one the decarburization process is stopped when the desired carbon limit in the bath has been reached ; by the other the bath is completely decarburizecl, and then a calculated amount of carbon added in the form of spiegel, ferro manganese, etc. In Germany the latter method only was adopted, and it was retained when the Thomas-Gilchrist process for the production of low-Phosphorus steel from high-phosphorus iron eame into use, since from the nature of the new process complete decarburization is neces-

AN insistent and steadily growing demand is evident for the broadening of undergraduate curricula in engineering. Among suggested additions are training in public speaking, report writing, business law and contracts, accounting, finance, money and banking, scientific management, economics, social and labor problems, psychology, and ethics. The demand for these subjects comes from the older engineers and from the industries that employ our graduates. Of course, many of the men who suggest such changes are influenced largely by their personal needs and contacts, but the demand is sufficiently widespread to merit serious study by educators. In fact, many educators themselves concur in the proposals for broader training. These matters were examined intensively a few years ago in an exhaustive study of engineering education. Opinion at that time was rather strongly against any profound change. Since then, however, the whole economic system has undergone violent disruption. Even if recommendations made a few years ago were appropriate to the conditions then- obtaining, the enormously changed conditions of the present make advisable a further careful study of this problem. In recent years, mergers, to reduce costs, have sharply limited the number of engineers employed and have thereby intensified the struggle to secure positions. In this stiffer competition, engineers with the most adequate training undoubtedly fare the best.

The choking-free cyclone was developed primarily to remove solid particles suspended in a slurry containing fibrous materials, such as municipal solid waste. This cyclone is characterized by a screw conveyor at the underflow side of the cyclone. The screw conveyor has a hollow rotational shaft for air supply and is driven by a variable speed motor for discharge control. Even if the underflow discharge is highly concentrated, this type of cyclone can be stably operated without nozzle choking. High classification efficiency similar to that of a conventional cyclone can be obtained as a result of air introduction through the hollow rotational shaft. The recovery of organic matter and the removal efficiency of inorganic matter were actually improved by the application of this cyclone to municipal solid waste. After applying this cyclone to the desliming of fine sand, sand product of low water content was recovered.

MANY mechanical advances have been made on mining equipment during the year 1951. There have been a number of trends established and many modifications made on open-pit equipment to increase the efficiency and availability of all the machines necessary in the moving of overburden and iron ore. Some years ago, the trend toward larger shovels for the loading of off-highway trucks began, but in the last year, it has become general practice to use the 5 to 7 ¼ -yd quarry-type shovels in the loading of haulage units. For years these larger shovels were used in the locomotive haulage pits. As the truck capacities increased from 15 to 20 to 30 tons, the need for larger loading units became apparent. Today in most mines, large shovels are in evidence and a few 8-yd shovels will be delivered this year for loading off-highway trucks. Torque Converter-Shovel The Diesel-driven shovel with its friction bands has been modernized with the torque converter. There have been about ten shovels remodeled to take a torque converter in the drive system. The large high-torque, low-speed Diesel engine was removed and replaced by a high-horsepower, high-speed, automotive-type engine. This engine was connected directly to the torque converter. The torque converter was connected to the shovel through the standard original sprocket and chain. Dual governors controlled engine performance. One governor controlled the high idle of the engine; the other governor, which is connected through a flexible shaft to the output shaft of the converter, controlled the loading of the engine. With this dual governor hook-up, the engine anticipates load conditions and is operating at high idle and full throttle before the shovel load is transmitted back through the converter to the flywheel. It has been found that with this automotive-type engine and converter, the shovel capacity has been increased about 20 pct. Also, the wear on the friction bands, breakage of hoist cables, and other mechanical breakages has been reduced materially. Alloy-Steel in Shovels The shovel equipment manufacturers have been experimenting with low-temperature-strength, high-alloy steels to combat the excessive breakage that occurs in extremely cold weather. High-nickel alloy steel has been used in critical areas that are affected by low temperatures, the most notable being dipper sticks. Most shovels ordered today are equipped with some of this special, alloy steel. More and more manganese alloy is being used for replacement parts such as shovel pads, idlers, drive sprockets, etc. Although the initial cost of these parts is considerably higher than the standard replacement items, the life of these manganese parts is considerably longer and well worth the added expenditure. Dipper-teeth repair is still a problem. Most companies use the small replaceable inserted tooth. It has become common practice among some of the companies to "job out" their dipper-tooth repairs to outside welding companies. This necessitates an additional inventory of teeth, but it does guarantee an adequate supply of replacement teeth at all times. These contractors have set up their shops on a production basis and can do an acceptable job at a high rate of speed. Thermite welding has been used in retipping teeth. To date, the process cannot be called successful but with improvements the time required to repoint the dipper teeth will be decreased considerably. The submerged arc process has been tried in the replacement of these dipper points, but like thermite welding has not proven successful. The ores treated at the concentrating plant of the Mahoning Mining Co. at Rosiclare, III., come largely from the blanket replacement deposits of the northeastern part of Hardin County, Illinois, and consist of complex mixtures of galena, sphalerite and fluorspar in a gangue of quartz, limestone and sandstone. The several minerals are so intimately inter-grown that they are not liberated at the sizes usually treated by gravity concentration in the usual fluorspar plant. For this reason, an all-flotation method of concentration was developed in cooperation with the station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Rolla, Mo.1 This flotation separation made possible the commercial production of four concentrates: (I) lead, (2) zinc, (3) acid-grade fluorspar and (4) metallurgical-grade fluorspar.2,3 Although fluorspar had been floated in Canada in 1921 and a plant at Rosiclare had been floating fluorspar since March 1929, fluorspar flotation was given considerable impetus by the Mahoning developments, since some features of the separation were quickly adopted by other fluorspar companies. The Bureau of Mines6 reports that in the 10 years preceding 1938 only 50,552 tons of fluorspar flotation concentrates were produced in the United States. The rise from this almost nominal figure to 153,750 tons (largely acid grade) in one year (1944)6 is indicative of the activity in fluorspar flotation occasioned by the war. The industry thus proved to be in a position to expand and keep up reasonably well with the requirements imposed upon it by such developments as occurred in high octane aviation gasoline alkylation, in the use of Freon as a refrigerant and as carrier in the Aerosol "bug bomb," and in the atomic bomb project as well as in the expansion of other activities requiring hydrofluoric acid; for example, the aluminum industry. Despite the fact that the greater portion of acid-grade fluorspar produced in the last few years went directly into war uses, the future of the acid-grade field still appears bright. As a result of the activity in fluorine chemistry during the war, it seems likely that in the relatively near future almost every phase of human endeavor will find some fluorine compound involved. The other three concentrates produced deserve some attention in these introductory remarks. The lead concentrates first produced contained both zinc and fluorspar but these did not interfere with their marketing. As will be pointed out later, the quality has steadily improved until today it is a relatively high-grade product. Although some zinc smelters accept concentrates containing limited quantities of fluorspar, it is a very objectionable impurity. In both Canada and the United States, a company making a public offering of securities must comply with regulations which have been passed by Federal, State and/or Provincial Legislatures. These regulations usually require the distribution of an acceptable prospectus which provides essential background information about the issuer, the project and the share offering. when the public offering has been accepted, the unlisted company may then seek a listing of its shares for trading on a Stock Exchange. Once listed, the company will be subject to rules of the Stock Exchange. This paper will deal with the specific information required for inclusion into a prospectus being submitted for a resource company and particularly those parts of concern to mining engineers and geologists.

AS a result of drilling operations during 1943, West Texas again added sufficient new oil reserves to replace the oil produced during the year, but failed to maintain its position in currently available reserves because the deeper discoveries will require years for development. Drilling failed to provide the additional oil necessary to meet the increase in current and anticipated market demand. Although 13.3 per cent of the total footage drilled was in wildcat exploration, the ratio of oil discoveries to total wildcats was less in 1943 than in 1942, but comparable to that in 1941. Of the 732 field wells completed, 270 were at Slaughter, 55 at Wasson, 45 at Mascho and 31 at North Cowden. As of Dec. 31, 1943, there were 361 drilling wells including 71 wildcat and 290 field wells; 19.7 per cent were wildcats. It is anticipated that the percentage of wildcats of the total wells will be higher during 1944 than in either 1942 or 1943. Tables 3 and 4 present a three-year comparison of drilling activity and illustrate the downward trend of development that has been in effect during that time. Because of development lag in the deeper Ordovician fields, several years elapse before 2 sufficient number of wells is completed to give a substantial producing rate. As these new oil reserves cost more to find, and will cost more to produce on a barrel basis than the oil marketed during the year, their reserve replacement value to the industry is less in money. Costs While complete costs for deeper drilling are not yet available for analysis, it is evi- dent from the data on drilling rates to comparable depths, contract prices, and general increases in costs, that the cost of drilling has risen approximately 20 per cent during the year. One representative drilling contractor estimates that the average drilling time on a 5000-ft. field well has increased nearly one third and that out-of-pocket costs have increased a dollar per foot. Three major factors contribute to this increased cost: (I) less experienced labor, (2) deterioration in mechanical equipment and expendable material, and (3) increased contract prices. In the past, when there were more drilling rigs than wells to be drilled, some contractors would cut their drilling profit to keep their personnel and rigs working. As this practice is no longer necessary, the contract prices are adjusted upward to assure a profit. On deep and difficult drilling, contracts are let on a cost plus basis. A number of mechanical difficulties have become evident. Inferior quality of steel used in drill pipe and rock bits has added appreciably to drilling time and cost. Contractors are experiencing delay in obtaining repair work and repair parts for prime movers. As the length of drilling time required an shallow-field wells has not increased in proportion to that on deeper wells, it seems that the medium-sized drilling rig is better adapted mechanically than the heavy one to the work imposed. One of the main deficiencies in the heavy rig equipment is inadequate pump capacity. DURING the roasting of zinc sulfide concentrates and by-product recovery from flue dusts, the zinc sul-fate phase may occur in various stages of the processes. In addition to zinc sulfide, other sulfide phases are usually present such as CdS, PbS, CuzS, and FeS. Consequently, the effect of these sulfides on the thermal decomposition of ZnS04 was investigated. Merck high-purity, anhydrous zinc sulfate was used as the starting material. The sulfate was heated under an argon atmosphere, at a rate of 10°C per min. With the first slight indication of decomposition as determined by gas analysis, the sample was removed from the furnace and allowed to cool. X-ray patterns showed no other phase present. It is estimated that less than 0.05 pct of the ZnS04 decomposed. The metal sulfides were also heated under an argon atmosphere to drive off any adsorbed water. The materials were then sized (-200 to +270 mesh), mixed in predetermined mole ratios, and pressed into pellets. The experimental measurement of the reaction rate consisted of purifying the argon carrier gas, continuous flushing of the heated reacting mixture with argon, and collection and analysis of the SOn product gas. AT Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse lime-rock. While oversize material was crushed through %-in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity. Prior to 1938 the relative proportions of zinc receipts were low and extraneous flux requirements at a minimum. However, subsequent war-inflated zinc demands brought marked increase in fine concentrate and slimy zinc leach residue receipts and an abrupt introduction to smelting a more refractory zinciferous charge. The higher temperature demands of the more refractory zinciferous charge required a higher smelting column and the higher column, in turn, rendered the blast furnace less receptive to improperly prepared feed. Inadequate presinter processing facilities prevented the production of acceptable sinter, and blast furnace production declined to 50 pct of former capacity. In view of a prevailing contention among lead metallurgists as to the deleterious action of high zinc slag on blast furnace capacity, it was natural to overstress this factor and to concentrate on possible changes in furnace design. Another interpretation was that primary correction should be sought through expanded sintering facilities. I PROPOSE in this paper to treat of the chimney merely as a heat engine, as one of the devices resorted to in practice for the conversion of heat into mechanical work. For the sake of simplicity and clearness in the discussion, let us consider the subject in its simplest form. Conceive a chamber, heated from without, in free communicatioH at one end with the external atmosphere, and at the other end opening into a vertical chimney. Let the. cross-section of the chamber be so great, relatively to that of the chimney, that we can neglect the actual energy of the air passing through the chamber. We will neglect, also, all passive resistances to the passage of the air. We will assume that the cross-section of the chimney is constant, and that the air in passing through it neither gains nor loses heat. THE orientations of tetragonal tin crystals are commonly examined by either the transmission Laue method or the back-reflection Laue method. The predominant planes and zone axes of the pattern are plotted on a Wulff net and indexed by measuring the angles between planes and directions. The problem of identifying the Laue spots has been approached in several different ways. Nicholas 1 tabulated interplanar angles for ten planes but did not relate the angles to permutation of indices or sign. A table of angles between adjacent planes and of angles between adjacent zones was published by Chandrasekhar and veal.' These tables are very helpful, provided the film shows all the low-order zones that occur within about 20 deg of each other. Frounfelker and Hirthe's compilation3 of angles between the (001) plane and twenty-nine other planes is useful for the indexing, only if the (001) spot can be found on the film. For all but the simplest orientations, however, more information is needed to index the diffraction spots. Standard stereographic projections, such as those published by Bicelli, 4 provide part of the information required. By their nature, these projections show the positions of only a few zone axes. In the tetragonal system many low-order zone axes are not normal to the planes having the same indices. Consequently, planes and directions can have entirely different positions on a stereographic projection. For example, the [011] zone axis is 33 deg from the normal to the (011) plane. The crystallographic orientation usually has to be deduced from a combination of the predominant zone axes and a few low-order planes that appear on the film. In addition to a standard stereographic projection of the planes, a stereographic projection of the directions is needed. Such a projection can be constructed from the angles given in Table I. To provide more information about angles between planes and directions, we have calculated interplanar angles up to (332) and angles between planes and directions up to [332] on an IBM 1620 computer. The angles are differentiated according to permutations of sign and indices. Those doing research on tin single crystals are welcome to request a copy of these tables from the authors.
