Within the last year or so, a great deal has been heard about Southern iron ; even the Eastern markets have felt the effect of the cheap Alabama ores and coals, and public attention has again been drawn to what is now getting to be an old story—the great mineral wealth of the South. The following paper is based on a report prepared several years ago for a special purpose; but since then, through association with Mr. C. B. Going in a large analytical practice and as chemists to the Queen and Crescent Railway, I have had opportunity to increase my material so greatly that the present paper is really a completely different work. I am under very great obligation to Mr. Going, without whose assistance my work would have been very incomplete, and have also been materially assisted by Mr. F. P. Dewey, of Washington, and a host of gentlemen connected with the railroads and furnaces of the South. The arrangement of this paper is not all that could be desired. Some localities of importance are very poorly represented, both in the description and the tables of analyses. This, however, was in most instances unavoidable, as the study has been done ill the intervals of professional work. In a recent study1 of the deformation of metastable beta copper-zinc and beta copper-tin crystals, it was established that the parallel markings that appear on the surface of these crystals after slight deformation represent lattice transformations. Stereographic analysis showed that in beta copper-tin, the poles of these markings deviated one or two degrees from poles of the form {133}. In beta copper-zinc the plane delineated by the markings corresponded to no one crystallographic plane of the matrix lattice; the marking poles deviated from 5° to 11° from poles of the form (110), and were displaced only a few degrees from (110) zones. Inasmuch as the new transition lattices produced as the result of the deformation are different for each alloy, it was thought at first that the habits of the markings might be the result of a cooperation between matrix lattice and transformed lattice. (Both matrix lattices arc body-centered cubic.) Such a cooperative effect is thought to obtain in the formation of Widmanstätten figures, for it is well known that the matrix lattice alone does not determine the habit assumed by a segregate phase. On the other hand, it is not inconceivable that the dissimilarity in marking habit might be due to differences in deformation characteristics of beta brass and beta bronze. Barrett and co-workers2 have shown that slip-line habits in pure iron are markedly different from those in high-silicon ferrite; and although it has been repeatedly demonstrated that plates of a segregate phase do not necessarily form on the slip planes of the matrix lattice, deformation characteristics may be more intimately allied with plate formation when a transformation is made to occur as a result of plastic deformation. However, there is the fact that the orientation of markings in metastable beta copper-zinc is the same whether the markings be produced by quenching, deformation, or liquid-air cooling; likewise, quenching and deformation markings in metastable beta copper-tin are oriented in the same way with respect to the beta matrix. Twinned metal crystals are usually designated as either deformation twins or annealing twins. If twins are to be classified according to the treatment the metal has undergone just prior to the observation of the twins, there are two other possible groups: (1) solidification twins,† when observed in the as-solidified or as-cast condition, and (2) transformation twins,† when observed in a metal which has been cooled from above an allotropic transformation temperature. McKeehan has demonstrated that ferrite does, occasionally at least, contain twinned structures2. The twins, which he studied by optical methods, were obtained during the preparation of iron single crystals by very slow cooling through A3. He proved that the twin relation was actually that which previous investigators had predicted; namely, twinning along three planes of the form (112). Since McKeehan's discovery, little or no attention has been given to this transformation twinning of alpha iron, or to the possibility that it might occur at all speeds of cooling from above A3 instead of merely during the preparation of single crystals. McKeehan's twins were evidently regarded as interesting only in proving that a body-centered cubic metal could form twinned structures—at least under certain conditions. It is generally believed that iron seldom if ever forms annealing twins. Certainly the straight-line banding which is so abundant in annealed face-centered cubic metals is characteristically absent in iron annealed below A3. However, O'Neil13 has studied "twin-like" crystals in annealed alpha iron and concludes that the specimen he studied actually contailled a few annealing twins. Tamura4 as reported "twin-like" crystals both in wrought iron and mild steel; specimens of the latter were annealed above and below A3 and showed "twin-like" crystals after both kinds of treatments.

The object of this paper is to record and interpret field and laboratory observations made by the writers during five years of study of the barite deposits of North Carolina. Deposits of barite are known to occur in three localities in North Carolina (Fig. 1) two of which—the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain —contain material of economic value. The Hot Springs area begins near Bluff, some 6 miles south of Hot Springs, and continues northeast by Stackhouse; a total length of 7 miles. The Kings Mountain deposits lie along a belt that extends from the north end of Crowders Mountain in a southwestward direction, along the east side of this and Kings Mountain, to Kings Creek, South Carolina. The third locality is 3½ miles southeast of Hillsboro, Orange County, a short distance west of the highway leading from Hillsboro to Chapel Hill. It is not known when barite was first discovered in North Carolina, but production from the Hot Springs area began some 50 years ago. The state has never produced large quantities of barite—usually there have been less than three producers—and definite figures are not available, but reasonably reliable estimates indicate a total production of 300,000 tons. From 1901 through 1920 barite mining was on a seemingly prosperous basis and a large tonnage was shipped from the Hot Springs and Kings Mountain areas. With the depression of 1920 the industry began to decline and production practically ceased in 1926. Geology of the Barite Areas In the Hot Springs area barite is found in the Max Patch granite of Archean age and the Snowbird formation of Cambrian age. The Max Patch granite is of two varieties, one gray to whitish and the other red. The gray granite is coarse, at times porphyritic, and composed of quartz, orthoclase and plagioclase feldspar, with a little biotite and muscovite. The red granite is also coarse and differs from the other only in having conspicuous pink and red feldspar. Two samples of drilling mud from the Hastings oil field, Texas, were tested, and the solids in each were separated into small fractions of a limited range in particle size. The mineral composition of each fraction by X-ray analysis is reported, and the results are interpreted in relation to other measured quantities, such as the physical properties of the original samples and the density of the various fractions. It was found that only 7 to 8 per cent by weight of the solids was of colloidal dimensions and that neither of the samples contained montmorillonite but did contain illite. Considerable calcite was also found. These data should be useful to the geologist interested in the origin and history of sedimentary strata as well as to the petroleum engineer. Introduction The questions, What is good drilling mud? What constitutes bad drilling mud? are pertinent, because the proper use and control of drilling fluids has been a factor of great importance in the successful drilling and completion of oil wells since the days of Captain Lucas. Adequate control of the characteristics of drilling fluids has assumed greater significance comparatively recently because of the problems introduced by caving formations in deep wells, costly blowouts and impressive mud bills. Much is known about the solution of some of the problems but, despite extensive research directed toward a better understanding of the physical and chemical properties of clay suspensions, it is difficult to define precisely a drilling mud, and much more difficult to say what constitutes a good mud. It is generally believed that the smaller particles of a drilling mud greatly affect its physical properties. In fact, it is customary to blame the colloids in a mud for nearly everything that goes amiss, because colloidal properties have effects out of all usual proportion on viscosity, filtration rate and reaction to electrolytes. It is germane to know whether drilling muds possess colloids and if so, the quantity and kind. Source oF Samples Two drilling muds from the Hastings oil field, Brazoria County, Texas, were selected because it is generally agreed that in this oil field good natural muds made solely from formations penetrated by the drill can be used until the well is nearly ready for completion. Customary drilling procedure in this field is to spud in with water, set a protective string of pipe, drill to 2500 ft. and set the surface casing. The. prospect of winning aluvinum from clay was recorded almost a century ago at a time when the metal was no more than a curiosity.$ As the industry developed, and it has probably developed faster than that of any other metal, the expanding need for raw materials was adequately met by the ample supplies of bauxite ore. As with the other metals older in industry, however, lower grade ores have gradually entered the raw-material field through improvements in ore dressing, insufficienoy of high-grade ore supplies, favorable geographic location, or national necessity for domestic supply. So with aluminum, or alumina, which has been established as the requisite intermediate, the time may have come when a satisfactory process, with favorable location and suitable raw materials, can hold a sound place both in metallurgy and economics. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the Ancor process and its proposed application in treatment of clay in a plant now under construction at Harleyville, South Carolina, by the Defense Plant Corporation. Development of the AncoR Process The Ancor process has developed through successive stages of laboratory investigation, pilot-plant demonstration using neph-eline syenite and pilot-plant demonstration using kaolin-type clay from South Carolina, and is now in preparation for unit trial on an operating plant basis using the latter material. The laboratory studies were carried out over a number of years in the laboratory of the American Nepheline Corporation in Rochester, N. Y., and for the same company in the ore-dressing laboratory of Beattie Gold Mines, Que. Ltd. at Dupar-quet, Quebec. Both companies are associated with Ventures Ltd., Toronto, and its associated American companies. The work was originally undertaken with a view to recovery of alumina and alkalies from nepheline syenite as an adjunct to the American Nepheline Company's established business in the glass and ceramic trades, but as a process developed the possibility of application to clay and other aluminous raw materials became apparent and the laboratory studies were broadened to include these as well. Under the more pressing impetus of wartime needs and possibilities, pilot-plant operations were undertaken at the Canadian Bureau of Mines Ore Dressing Laboratories in Ottawa, and for purposes of demonstration under joint sponsorship of the Canadian Bureau of Mines, The American Nepheline Corporation, and The Aluminium company of canada Ltd. The organized curtailment of California oil production is not yet one year old but during its first year it has accomplished so much that it is now firmly established as an agency of economic efficiency. The principle of cooperative curtailment has been adopted by other states and it is safe to say that the principle will continue as long as the demand for petroleum is notably less than the potential production. It' is interesting to note that this same principle of regulating supply to meet demand is now being urged for other industries, such as agriculture and mining. Since Oct. 31, 1929, when curtailment was instituted by the oil producers of Santa Fe Springs and Long Beach in an effort to avert the disaster of ruinously low prices which confronted them, there has been a constant and increasingly effective curtailment program in California. Prior to that time a notable effort toward the restriction of oil production was made under the direction of F. C. Van Deinse during the early summer months of 1929. A considerable reduction of oil output was recorded as the result of this effort, but because of incomplete cooperation and the discovery of still deeper zones at Santa Fe Springs the effort was abandoned; flush field production became unrestrained and prices soon fell to low levels. This initial curtailment movement was educational and experimental. It showed all operators a way out of their overproduction difficulties and developed the principles followed in later curtailment efforts. Thus it was that only a few days after their oil had been reduced to 60 c. per barrel, the operators of Santa Fe Springs got together and agreed to restrict their current production of more than 270,000 bbl. daily to not more than 150,000 bbl. daily. The operators at Long Beach followed the same course a few clays later and agreed to limit their production to not more than 110,000 bbl. daily. The Santa Fe Springs operators chose H. P. Grimm as umpire and director of their proration program. Neal H. Anderson was chosen umpire for Long Beach. This paper treats primarily of the valuation of developed coal properties by the method of capitalizing their estimated average future earnings. However, reference is also made to valuations of undeveloped coal lands and to various methods of appraisal other than by future earnings. Fundamental Valuation Principles Before discussing in detail coal property valuations, a few statements bearing on the general subject will be made to present certain of the writer's views on the question as a whole. 1. A certain property at a given time has but one true value. This is not universally admitted. The appraiser rather frequently finds that a coal owner has in mind three valuations for his holdings; one, the figure at which he feels they should be appraised for taxation purposes; another, the much higher one that should be used if a loan is to be negotiated on the property; and a third, intermediate between the other two, the price for which he would be willing to dispose of his holdings were they for sale. The last is usually nearest to the true value, and because this is so the statement is generally accepted that the fair value of such a property is the price arrived at by negotiation between a willing seller and a willing buyer who are otherwise disinterested. 2. Notwithstanding the foregoing, it is only very generally and approximately true that the proper measure of the value of a given developed' coal acreage is the unit or per-acre price for which one or more bodies of similar coal in the same district have been sold recently. To give a few reasons why such a measure of value can not be strictly applied, it may be noted: a. That sales are often forced by circumstances at times when the coal business is depressed and buyers can be found only for properties that are offered at figures far below their true value. b. That conversely, during periods of unusual prosperity, abnormally high prices are paid. Such conditions obtained several years ago when coal brokers, with very profitable contracts but no sure source of supply, were bidding against inexperienced or shortsighted operators for proper-

THE average lead and zinc content of the ores mined and milled in the Joplin district is low as compared with that of other lead and zinc deposits throughout the United States. Because of this fact and of the high grade of the concentrates, the ratio of concentration is unusually high. Most of the operating companies have aimed to produce as high a grade of concentrate as possible in order to obtain the highest price for their product. They have done this at the sacrifice of the percentage of zinc recovered. The average percentage of zinc recovery is from 60 to 70 per cent. For percentage of recoveries from actual mill tests, see tables. The concentration is commonly effected by crushing the ore to h-in. (12.7 mm.) size and subjecting it to a roughing and cleaning over two or more large Cooley jigs, of the Harz type, the finer sands being treated on the usual types of sand and slime tables. The treatment of slimes by flotation is being tested at several of the larger mills. COARSE CONCENTRATION When the ore. has been hoisted from the mine it is dumped onto a chute leading to a grizzly made of iron bars, usually heavy rails, spaced 4 to -5 in. (101 to 127 mm.) apart. The oversize is caught on the grizzly, the mineralized pieces are broken with sledge hammers so as to pass through, and the boulders that are practically barren are sorted out by hand and trammed to the waste-rock pile. The proportion of waste rock thus sorted out varies from a fraction of 1 per cent to 15 per cent., depending on the nature of the rock.

In the last several years a type of application of the fundamental permeability-saturation relationships has been developed which offers great promise in the interpretation of general reservoir performance.l-' In these developments no attempt is made to solve the detailed flow dynamics in actual oil and gas-producing systems. That problem still remains unsolved. But the permeability-saturation phenomena are incorporated in the analysis of oil-producing reservoirs in a manner such as to reflect the true role they play in controlling the gross reservoir behavior. In particular, they are introduced in such a manner as to determine the gas-oil ratio of the production at any stage of depletion, and, when combined explicitly with the so-called material-balance principles in differential form, one can obtain a differential equation describing completely the average pressure and gas-oil-ratio history of oil-producing reservoirs. While thus far they have been applied directly only to gas-drive reservoirs, they are susceptible of extension to partial water-drive systems, and qualitatively the same principles are of value in the study Of complete water-drive reservoirs. Moreover, in addition to giving a means for computing the variation of the reservoir pressure and gas-oil ratios vs. the cumulative production, they automatically lead to predictions of the gross ultimate recovery under natural depletion—and when properly extended they provide means for predicting the ultimate recovery under gas or water injection. The data required for such applications are the initial fluid distribution in the producing section, the pressure-volume-temperature data on the gas and liquid phases, and the permeability-saturation relationship for the oil-satuiated zone. The former can be obtained with reasonable accuracy by methods that are well established and available throughout the industry. AMONG the genetically interesting iron ores of the United States are those of the St. Francis Mountains near Ironton and Iron Mountain, Missouri. They are specular hematite in porphyry. The Iron Mountain and Shepherd Mountain deposits are generally spoken of as veins and those of Pilot Knob, Cedar Hill, and Russell Mountain as bedded deposits. Iron Mountain has produced nearly 4,000,000 tons of ore and Pilot Knob about 1,500,000 tons. The output of the other three localities has been insignificant. Pilot Knob is no longer worked as an iron mine, but the rock is now being crushed for use as road metal. Iron Mountain has continued as an active producer. In 1927, the property was acquired by the M. A. Hanna Co. and an extensive prospecting and exploration campaign was undertaken, so that the ultimate production of Iron Mountain will doubtless greatly exceed the figures mentioned.

PRELIMINARY experiments in these laboratories showed that whereas pyrite1 produced only sul-fate the action of aqueous chlorine solutions on most other sulfide ores resulted in the formation of a mixture of sulfate and elemental sulfur, the production of the latter being favored by a very dilute solution of oxidant. The reactions taking place were obviously complex and only a detailed kinetic study could be expected to clarify the position and enable a prediction to be made of conditions leading to the rapid formation of metal salt and the economically desirable elemental form of sulfur. Galena was chosen for the first investigation as it is of widespread occurrence and is representative of a simple cubic lattice sulfide containing the monosulfide unit, S2-. Experimental Procedure The apparatus and general technique used in this work have already been described.' Analyses for chlorine and sulfate were carried out by the same methods as those used for pyrite. The lead in 1 ml aliquots of solution was determined polarographi-cally, after destroying chlorine with hydrazine hy-drochloride and making solutions 0.5 molar with hydrochloric acid. A large sample of Kansas galena, assaying at better than 98 pet PbS, was crushed and wet sieved to give fractions of —10 + 14, —20 + 28, —28 + 35, and —48 + 65 Tyler screen. The particles were almost perfect cubes and the apparent surface Per gram was calculated assuming each particle a cube Of side equal to the mean mesh opening. A volume shape factor, calculated as for pyrite, was exactly unity. The main apparatus was unsuitable for direct visual examination of the ore particles during the reaction. For this purpose a small cell from a Spekker Absorptiometer optical flats 1 cm apart) was l by a greased microscope slide after filling with oxidant solution. One or two ore particles were placed in the cell and the solution was stirred by a glass covered speck of iron wire activated by an external rotating magnet. The surface of an ore particle was examined under a binocular microscope at between 10 and 40 magnifications. Results Experiments were made under a wide variety of conditions, the form of presentation of the data being illustrated by Fig. 1, where the concentrations of chlorine, sulfate, and sulfur are plotted against time. The fictitious concentration of solid sulfur is used for convenience and is the molarity of sulfur which would be recorded if the elementary sulfur formed during the reaction were dissolved in the liquid iii the reaction vessel. Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), founded in 1942, is located near the town of Itabira, Brazil. Its iron ore deposits include over 500 million metric tons (mt) of high-grade hematite and about 2 billion mt of itabirite (banded rock formed by thin alternate layers of hematite and silica). These deposits are part of the Iron Ore Quadrangle, of which the overall reserves have been estimated at more than 30 billion mt. The magnitude of the project meant difficult early years for the company, including large investments, extensive railroad rehabilitation, and construction of ore port and ore handling facilities. Companhia Vale do Rio Doce was organized as a stock company, and 91% of its shares are presently owned by the Brazilian government. Financing has been accomplished in part through loans from international monetary agencies foreign banks, and foreign industry, as well as Brazilian banks. The company markets mainly abroad. In 1967, it exported 10.6 long tons (It) of ore, principally to West Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Italy, France, United Kingdom, and the United States. The Rio Doce geographic region where CVRD operates is strategically located among the large population centers of Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, and Vitoria (Fig. 1). It covers an area of approximately 81,000 sq km in the states of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo, and its population in 1968 was about 3.5 million. This region presents excellent prospects for development, with factors favorable for forestry, agriculture, grazing, and exploration for minerals other than iron ore, Electric power (hydroelectric plants) is available, as well as two main systems of transportation: the Rio-Bahia highway and the Vitoria-Minas Railroad. It was said by many who discussed Professor Posepny's admirable paper on the "Genesis of Ore-Deposits," read at the Chicago meeting of the Institute, in 1893, that its most valuable feature was the clear distinction which it drew between the influence upon ore-deposits of the " vadose " circulation of waters descending directly from the surface, and that of the deep underground circulation of waters generally coming from the depths, and assumed by the author to be ascending through more or less open spaces under the influence of heat. As an example of nonmetallic mineral flotation, the separation of several pegmatite minerals will be discussed in considerable detail, from both the laboratory-testing and plant-operation standpoints. The pegmatites have been chosen to illustrate the practicality of the selective separations of the minerals in a complex nonmetallic ore and, in so doing, to set forth a summation of the flotation art and technology which is applicable in part to the beneficiation of several less complex nonmetallic ores. In addition, a brief summary of descriptions of other nonnietallic mineral flowsheets and separations is included. Some of the industrial minerals now being concentrated by froth flotation methods commercially, or in the laboratory, are listed in Table 1. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS There are two classes of chemicals that are normally utilized as collectors in froth flotation separations of nonmetallic minerals. These are defined as anionic and cationic and are typified by the fatty acids and amines, respectively. The fatty acids are selective to those minerals that have a high concentration of positive surface charges, such as the various calcium minerals typified by calcite, phosphate rock, and fluorspar. The amines are selective to those minerals with a high concentration of negative surface charges, such as silica sand and silicates. It should be noted, however, that by using various inorganic chemicals, a new or synthetic surface can be placed on specific minerals which produces different characteristics, thereby reversing the flotation reagent required for separation. The polar end of the collector attaches to the mineral surface either by chemical or physical adsorption; the nonpolar unreactive end is oriented away from the mineral surface. The result is a hydrophobic coating at the mineral surface which causes attachment to air bubbles. It is this surface condition that permits the floating of minerals which normally sink in water. THE literature of geophysics as applied to the discovery of mineral deposits has been very extensive during the past few years,1 but there seem to be few references to the use of the method of least squares for obtaining better interpretations of the observed data .2 There seems to be a general reluctance among geologists and engineers to acquire the technique of least squares, in spite of the fact that a thorough knowledge of the theory is not necessary for the use of the method.

For blasting in coal mines the U. S. Bureau of Mines recommends that permissible explosives be used exclusively, that these shall be fired electrically, and that where feasible the working place shall be cut or sheared. These recommendations are made to promote safety and prevent mine explosions. Although permissible explosives are not flameless, their lower flame temperature and shorter duration of flanie make their use safer than that of nonpermissible explosives. Mixtures of air with both methane and bituminous coal dust, which are liable to occur in coal mines, may be ignited by coming in contact with any type of flame or spark of sufficient temperature and duration or by the firing of a blast. In a working place where a blast is to be fired, in addition to the use of permissible explosives, adequate ventilation for the dilution and removal of accumulations or outbursts of flammable gas should be provided. Bituminous coal mines should be rock-dusted as a means of rendering the coal dust harmless The efficient use of permissible explosives depends upon the proper preparation of the working place, standardized drilling, the strength characteristics of the explosive, and the use of a proper weight of charge. Experienced shotfirers should load, tamp and fire all holes. The major part of the information and data here presented is based on the results of efficiency tests made in large producing mines of Pennsylvania and Illinois. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations, Serial No. 2697, describes how a standard method of blasting was worked out and put into operation in a mine in southern Illinois.' This paper contains a description of the methods worked out subsequently in another mine in that district. Descriptions of tests in two Pennsylvania mines are given in Bulletins 11 and 19 of the Carnegie Institute of Technology.2 These tests

In recent years many new appliances have been introduced into German steel-works and rolling-mills for the purpose of improving working-methods, and of creating and maintaining increased production, and satisfying the ever-growing demand for metal of closely specified hardness, strength and form. One result of the improvements has been to aid very effectively in demonstrating the real superiority of ingot- over wrought-iron for almost every possible purpose, and in dispelling the last vestiges of prejudice unfavorable to the new metal. If, nevertheless, no marked decrease in the number of puddlingfurnaces has yet been noticed, the cause of their survival must be attributed to the greatly increased consumption of all kinds of ironmanufactures. Several large new works for the production of ingotiron are now, however, in course of erection in the Rhenish-Westphalian district, and upon their completion a rapidly diminishing output of wrought-iron may be anticipated. The present aim of all large works manufacturing ingot-iron is to work the molten blast-furnace pig into a finished product without any further fuel-consumption than is required to furnish steam for the rolling-mill. Though practice has established the feasibility of this principle, no works can yet point to its complete adoption, partly because of the limitations imposed by existing conditions and plant, and partly, also, on account of the highly-diversified character of the finished products. The Bessemer-works were the first to feel the influence of the basic process; but of recent years a similar influence has affected the open-hearth, and the owners of works possessing both a converterand an open-hearth plant are now seeking to arrange them for combined working, in charging as well as in casting. The segregation process, an alternative to benefi-ciation of oxidized and mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores, is studied here with particular emphasis placed on time, temperature, and coke and salt percentage factors. The results show that in a segregated charge, the copper assay of the coarsest fractions normally is of the same order as the copper assay of the tails obtained from grinding and flotation of the same charge. This observation suggests the possibility of limiting or even eliminating the grinding step from the flowsheet of a segregation plant. The segregation process, which offers an alternative to beneficiation of oxidized and mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores, was discovered in 1923 by Moulden and Taplin1,2 who were attempting to apply the Perkins process3'4 to a Chilean ore from the Sagasca mine. After a number of investigations and pilot plant tests,'-' the segregation process became a successful industrial operation.'r9 The process aroused considerable interest in Chile because of the existance of large reserves of oxidized copper minerals which could not be treated by conventional hydrometallurgical methods because of the high consumption and prohibitive cost of sulfuric acid. During the last two years, the Mineral Dressing Dept. of the Institute de Investigaciones Tecnology cas of University of concepci6n (Chile) has carried out a test program on 23 different ore samples representative of the national territory. These tests were carried out on a semi-continuous and batch scale with a rotary, automatically controlled and gas-fired furnace (supplied by Bartlett and Snow, Fig. 1). The results of these tests indicate that out of the 23 samples 20 can be successfully treated by this process with recoveries of copper ranging from 85 to 95%.10,11 The purpose of this paper is to treat some specific problems related to the segregation process. TIME AND TEMPERATURE FACTORS Time and temperature of calcination play an important role in the segregation process. When moderate salt and coke conditions were maintained (each of reagents was added in the quantity of 1 — % wt), systematic testing easily demonstrated the influence of these two factors on segregation and flotation recovery. The pertinent results are summarized in Fig. 2.
