The practical experience obtained from designing and commissioning of fully controlled coal preparation plants, using centralised mini computers is discussed. The importance of defining a workable operating philosophy is highlighted with particular reference to the problems associated with trying to achieve a total 'hands off' concept. These experiences with a centralised computer controlled system have led to a deeper understanding of the interaction between the operation and the control system and the role of local control and management information within the overall control philosophy of a highly automated process plant. The utilisation of an extensive fully distributed microprocessor control system with over 6500 digital and analogue signals split into six autonomous areas with a supervisory system to provide operator interface is described. The important aspects of project definition and design needs are outlined with particular regard for achieving maximum efficiency with minimum complexity. Views of future trends are offered, based on the experience of both centralised computer and distributed processor systems.

SHORTLY after our previous paper on this subject was printed,1 we located a source of uncertainty in the results arising from the unexpected fact that hydrogen slowly reduces silica at 1100° C. in presence of iron, even when the iron nowhere touches the silica, although in absence of iron it does not do so. This difficulty has been completely obviated by the use of a small high-frequency furnace, which enables us to heat the specimen for analysis without raising the temperature of the silica vessel to a point at which any appreciable reduction of the silica glass occurs. We now describe this modification of procedure, and present some typical results obtained with it. For any given specimen of steel, the results are entirely definite and. reproducible, but their precise significance is still open to some question, as indeed is true of all methods of oxygen determination so far developed. Further elucidation of this question is to be expected from the cooperative comparison of the several methods now under way under the auspices of the Bureau of Standards at the instance of the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E.

THE sound made by ball, pebble and rod mills has long been used by the operator as the "telltale" of their operation. The nature of this sound depends upon local conditions and the type of mill used. By experience an operator can tell whether the mill is running properly or not. Some operators are able to detect the difference in sound much better than others and get better results running the same mill tinder the same conditions. The automatic operation of a mill using sound as the fundamental means for maintaining control presents many problems. The satisfactory solution of these problems requires, for given operating conditions, a greater average output, with improved product for subsequent processing, than can be obtained by manual control.

Reserve Mining Co. produces 5 million tons of iron ore pellets per year. The finished product runs about 65.50 pct Fe, with 7.75 to 8.00 pct SiO2. Less than 12 pct arrives at the blast furnaces smaller than 3/8 in. This plant was originally designed to produce 3.75 tons annually-not 5 million. To handle the increased tonnage a fifth fine crushing line was added, and some very minor changes were made.

The press, trade publications, and special circulars, some elaborately illustrated, have been liberally employed within recent years in this country, to set forth the advantages of various locations as industrial centers, having as a basis the possibility of profitably producing pig-iron at these proposed centers: and special stress has been placed upon opportunities believed to exist at certain points for making iron of a quality suitable for the manufacture of Bessemer steel. The remarkable statements and prophecies made in some of these publications, have suggested the present paper, treating of the influence which location exerts upon the special industries named.

Mr. Eschholz discusses the particular case of large precipitators installed in connection with large metallurgical operations, and receiving their high-potential energy through the conversion of alternating current to direct current by means of the mechanical rectifier. He classifies these mechanical rectifier installations, according to source of power, as follows: System A.-Applications utilizing individual alternating-current generators, either single-phase or polyphase, installed exclusively for furnishing energy to one or more transformer-rectifier-precipitator units. System. B.-Applications having no special alternating-current generators, but utilizing the existing alternating-current industrial or lighting mains to supply the energy to one or more transformer-rectifier-precipitator units. System C.-Applications receiving their energy from high-tension power circuits supplied directly to potential regulator-rectifier-precipitator units. I do not intend here to enter upon a detailed technical discussion of the foregoing classes, which would really interest only the manufacturers of electrical apparatus and the electrical engineers. The study of mosaic structure of crystals1 has been confined until recently to the field of theoretical physics. Crystallographers, in general, have neglected the subject, although X-ray crystallographers constantly make use of formulas for intensities of X-ray reflection as modified by mosaic structure. Work on mosaic structure has centered chiefly on the task of proving or disproving the secondary-structure theory of Zwicky,² and very little attention has been paid to the visible imperfections of crystals. A. Goetz has been responsible for most of the supposed experimental confirmations of Zwicky's theory.3 On the other hand, Smckal,4 and Orowan,5 among others, maintain that there is neither theoretical nor experimental evidence to substantiate Zwicky's secondary structure. Lately the subject has been intensively investigated by Buerger,6 one of whose recent papers led to a symposium on mosaic structures.'

Foreword I HEREWITH present some notes on the use of Portland cement to cement in the casing, and for plugging, to exclude water from oil and gas wells, and the methods employed. I have used my best efforts to make each step of the operation of cementing wells perfectly clear. The information is the result of actual experience and observation. The illustrations are from original drawings made especially for this paper. Portland Cement It is not necessary to discuss here the manufacture of cement. Any established brand of the slower setting Portland cements may be purchased with the confidence that it will harden, if properly used, and exclude water from and plug wells efficiently. Setting.-By the setting of cement is meant its initial change from a soft or plastic mortar to a friable solid. After the cement has become thoroughly set it is still very weak and can be readily pulverized in the fingers. Setting is thought to be effected by the crystallizing out of the silicate and the aluminate of lime, which are soluble in water in their anhydrous form. After dissolving in the water they pass to the hydrated state, in which they are insoluble, and hence are precipitated in a crystalline form.

I. INTRODUCTION THE geology of the Tintic mining district, fully treated, would occupy an elaborate monograph. This less comprehensive paper is devoted primarily to the occurrence and origin of the orebodies of the district, while space is given to those phases of the general geology only which seem necessary to a proper setting of such a discussion. The first geological report on the Tintic district to be issued was that by Tower and Smith, published in 1899, in the form of a paper in Part III of the Nineteenth Annual Report of the U. S. Geological Survey, and also as Folio No. 65, Geologic Atlas of the United States. About four years ago a second investigation was begun by Waldemar Lindgren and G. F. Loughlin, of the U. S. Geological Survey. With the exception of a paper on the oxidized zinc ores of the Tintic district by Mr. Loughlin, the results of their work are still unpublished. The writer's acquaintance with the district began in the fall, of 1913, and has extended over a period of about two years.

In August 1957, a cutter suction dredge started the removal of overburden from a bauxite deposit near Paranam, Surinam (formerly Dutch Guiana), South America. This event marked the climax of a program of investigation, design and construction which lasted almost five years. Cutter-suction dredges are used predominantly for harbor and river work, and land reclamation. While they have been utilized to remove overburden from ore bodies, notably at Steep Rock, Ontario, and Black Lake, Quebec, the conditions under which one is being used for this purpose in Surinam are unusual. Paranam is a mining town built by Suriname Aluminum Company, a subsidiary of Aluminum Company of America. It is located on the Surinam River, about 30 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The bauxite mining, drying and shiploading facilities have been in operation since 1941.

IN the last several years the coal industry has intensified its effort to solve the growing problem of cleaning and recovering fine mesh coals. On one hand there has been increasing civic pressure for cleaner streams, and on the other hand there has been increasing production of fine mesh coal, resulting directly from adoption of the modern mining methods so essential to the economy of the coal mining industry. Cleaning fine coal with the same precision possible with coarser coals is a difficult task, and for coals finer than 200 mesh it has been impractical. Furthermore, the inclusion of -200 mesh material in the final product markedly increases costs of dewatering and thermal drying, which are necessary steps if coal is to meet market requirements. Consequently these extreme fines have generally been wasted. As a result, problems have been created in many districts because there has not been enough area for adequate settling basins.

FIFTY-three alloys have been examined in the Fe-W and Co-W alloy systems in an attempt to verify the finding of o phases in these systems as reported by Goldschmidt.' The alloys were examined metallographically and by X-ray diffraction. The 10-g specimens were made by powder metallurgy techniques. Very fine, high-purity powders were compressed in a double-acting die at 120,000 psi after hydrogen reduction. All compacts were then sintered for 200 hr at 950°C in a helium atmosphere. Metallographic investigation and X-ray diffraction proved this time to be sufficient to allow complete homogenization before the subsequent high-temperature anneal. Each specimen was then sealed into an evacuated silica capsule and annealed at 1400"or 1500 C (except two) for 25 hr. (The 60 pct Fe and 55 pct Co alloys taken to 1610"and 1680°C respectively were held at these temperatures for 1hr.
