The scope of this paper is the description of two districts in Peru in which deposits of vanadium have been found, and the consideration of much laboratory-work that I and others have done to determine the nature of these deposits. It is with regret that I present some of the data in a state of evident incompletion, particularly the analyses of a few of the minerals, which leaves some doubt as to whether the true nature of the migerals is understood. I make no apology, however, since in this case, as in many others referring to ore-deposits, conclusive opinions cannot be stated until a great amount of work has been done, and the deposit has been thoroughly exploited. I believe that the data and the tentative conclusions here presented indicate a unique and interesting condition which may assist others in work along similar lines; arid further, what is of more practical importance, stimulate a search for a metal which, though long considered rare, is probably so merely because proper care has not been taken to recognize it. An excellent bibliography on the occurrence of vanadium in nature is given by I?. W. Clarke in his paper, Data of Geochemistry;' and in the preparation of this paper 1 have consulted many of the references contained in the Bibliography of the Chemistry of Vanadium, by M. Moisan.2 A brief review of the subject having special reference to the metallurgy of vanadium is contained in the small book by P. X-ray dif action techniques were used to investigate ordering and domain coalescence for the B2 (CsC1) superlattice in this alloy. Essentially complete disorder is obtainable by drastic quenching. isothertmal ordering occurs very rapidly at temperatures between 565° and 680°C, only a few seconds being required for development of substantial long-range order. A very fine antiphase dormain structure, found in samples annealed for short times, undergoes coalescence with further annealing. Domain "size" is found proportional to (t)1/2 . This Yate law can be derived by adapting the formalism of Hillert's analysis 01- metallurgical grain growth. For this Purpose the material is descvibed in terms of a "Swiss-cheese " structure, consisting of two multiply connected, mutually intertwined domain volumes. The observed activation enevgy for coalescence, 70 kcal per g-atom, agrees with an estit~lated value ,for volume diffusion in disordered rrzaterial. It is suggesled that the experimental value vejlects the substantially disordered environment of mobile vacancies located in the moving antiphase domain boundary. The alloy Fe-Co-2V is bcc below about 900'C and orders into a B2 (CsC1) superlattice below about 730c It has important applications in magnetic components, including many requiring extensive cold rolling.* example, Marcinkowski and Brown6 observed a re1atively small as-quenched domain size of about 250Å in B2 Fe3A1. Since there appear to be no published data on domain coalescence in B2 alloys, this process was studied in detail. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES A commercial high-purity alloy, nominally 49 Fe-49Co-2V, was obtained from the Arnold Engineering Co. in the form of cold-rolled sheet 0.004 in. thick. Samples were annealed for 1 hr at 800°C in dry H2 to produce disorder and quenched into iced brine. They were then annealed in a nitrate-nitrite salt bath for various times at temperatures between 525° and 625°C. Estimates of the LRO parameter S and the APD size D were made using established X-ray diffraction techniques. Superlattice peaks are best observed using CoKa radiation, for which the value of (fFe-fCo) is maximized. Peak-to-background intensity ratio was improved by filtering CoKß from the incident beam to eliminate sample fluorescence, and by using a pulse-height analyzer. The LRO parameter S was computed from the ratio of integrated intensities I 100/I 200- Owing presumably to systematic errors associated with the presence of crystallographic texture and X-ray extinction, only rough agreement was obtained between experimental and theoretical (absolute) intensity ratios. For this reason certain experimental refinements (e.g., use of balanced filters) were considered superfluous and were omitted. Emphasis was placed on maximizing intensity in order to reduce the time taken to accurately determine the contour of the very small (loo), peak. This was done by point counting 105 counts at appropriate intervals. Background intensity averaged about 1200 cps.

Gravity drainage is the self-propulsion of oil downward in the reservoir rock. Under favorable natural and operational conditions, it has been found to effect recoveries comparable to water displacement. With modern technical knowledge, the operator can often make a choice between dissolved gas drive, water drive and gravity drainage as the principal recovery agent in a reservoir. It is desirable that the opeator be able to determine which of the three agents will be most effective under each set of conditions. So far, gravity drainage has received less consideration than the other two. In this paper. an endeavor is made to set forth some of the principles of gravity drainage, to point out the types of reservoirs favorable for it, and to show how it may be applied in them. Field examples are described and discussed. Introduction Since early in the history of the oil industry, it has been recognized that gravity is one of the three important natural forces for expelling oil from the reservoir rock. As knowledge of the technology of oil recovery progressed, ideas changed with respect to the relative importance of the three forces and with respect to the manners in which they functioned. For a time, disproportionate emphasis was placed on the importance and function of gas and the need for conserving gas pressures. More recently, disproportionate emphasis has been placed on encroaching edge water. Only lately has there been evidence that the function and importance of gravity was to receive due consideration. Study of this neglected phase of oil recovery is needed to round out our knowledge of reservoir behaviors and to gain a balanced viewpoint of the interplay of forces that may operate in varying importance in reservoirs. The purpose of this paper is to discuss mainly in a qualitative way, the functions of gravity, to present some concrete instances where it has been important and to raise some questions that should be investigated further. Oil-recovery Agents The important natural agents for effecting oil recovery that may be originally available in a reservoir are gas, both dissolved in the oil and free in gas caps, encroaching edge water and gravity. Each of these agents can act in a dual capacity—physically to overcome the surface energies that hold the oil within the pores and mechanically to overcome viscous . resistance and to propel the oil through the porous reservoir rock to the wells. Advancing edge water displaces the oil from the pores and lifts it updip to structurally lower wells. Gravity drains the oil from the pores and flows it downdip to the wells. Gas displaces oil from the pores, entrains it in the gas stream and flows it to the wells, but gas in solution also affects the physical properties of the oil and thus can influence oil recovery by the other agents, whether or not the mechanical energy in the gas is utilized. During the course of the war the supply of tin in this country has steadily decreased and a continued effort has been made since the beginning of the emergency to use alloys that are either tin free or contain appreciably lower quantities of it. Even with the use of emergency materials, the tin supply has become particularly acute, and it is estimated that after recovery of the far eastern mines probably one to two years will be required before our normal annual supply is attained. One of the major tin-consuming fields is the bronze industry. Recommendations were made several years ago by the War Production Board toward the use of bronzes of lower tin content and manganese bronze and yellow brass for the customarily used tin-bronze alloys. The substitution of 88-5-5-2 copper-nickel-tin-zinc for composition G received considerable attention before the war, and consequently this alloy and modifications of it have been adopted for some current structural and pressure castings requiring high mechanical properties. Another of the commonly used bronzes is the 10 per cent tin 10 per cent lead copper alloy for heavy-duty bearings. It has been known for some time that about 2.5 per cent nickel could be substituted for an equal amount of tin with retention of equivalent casting and tensile properties; however, it was desirable that a still greater conservation of tin be made. Consequently the present paper deals with the development of an alloy of low tin content that could be used for bearings. Selection or Composition While the final criterion of the suitability of an alloy for a bearing must of course be determined by practical applications where all the ramifications of service conditions are encountered, certain short cuts in the initial selection of compositions are necessary to avoid an extensive and time-consuming investigation. The present program has been to match certain metallurgical properties of the 80-10-10 bronze that have been shown by previous investigations to be related to good bearing qualities. Such properties as microstruc-ture, hardness, compressive yield strength, ductility, and castability have been considered, and certain simple wear tests have been made. Of the readily assessed characteristics desired in a good bearing alloy, one can be certain that a uniform distribution of lead is required in a leaded bronze. It has generally been found that segregation of lead is one of the chief difficulties with this type of material. Tin has a powerful effect on lead distribution, and with 10 per cent present produces a random distribution of chunky particles, such as are shown in Fig' 1. Lead and zinc contents of elm, maple, and oak trees and of soils in which the trees grew were determined in samples from the Upper Mississippi Valley mining district, and from an area outside but contiguous to the district. The lead and zinc analyses of plant materials served to differentiate the mineralized and nonminer-alized areas. Stems contained about two times as much lead and about two to five times as much zinc as did leaves taken from the same stems. Lead and zinc analyses of all soil horizons could be used to differentiate between the two areas. Soils at most sample sites in the mineralized district seemed to be more reliable than plants for geochemical prospecting and are a more practical sampling medium. Soil samples from areas with thick loess cover, however, failed to indicate the presence of mineralized bodies whereas tree samples from the same sites contained anomalous amounts of lead and zinc. It is suggested that in areas of thick loess cover, plant samples could be used in prospecting for lead and zinc. The important part that plants play in the cycling of elements through the soil horizons is well-known. The concentration of elements in the upper soil horizons by the action of plants has been called the Goldschmidt enrichment principle.' The fact that plant species vary greatly in their ability to concentrate particular elements in their tissues is also well-known.' Agricultural literature has dealt extensively with relationships of the major nutritive elements in soils and plants3 The extent, however, to which plant actions cycle the minor nutritive and the nonmetabolic elements in the soil has not been adequately investigated. Lead is non-nutritive and toxic to plants, whereas zinc is a micronutrient in low, but toxic in high, concentrations.4 This report presents the results of a biogeochemical study concerned with the amounts of lead and zinc in some plants and soils that occurred both within and adjacent to the Upper Mississippi Valley lead-zinc district. Field work for this study was done in the summers of 1961 and 1962. SAMPLE TARGETS AND CHEMICAL ANALYSES Geologic and physiographic descriptions of' the district have been made by Heyl 5 and several other authors in a series of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports and quadrangle maps.6-I Sedimentary rocks, mostly dolomite, limestone, shale, and sandstone, of Cambrian, Ordovician, and Silurian age predominate in the area. Mineral deposits are of the vein and cavity-fill type; the principal ore minerals are galena and sphalerite. Vegetation of the area was characterized by Curtis1 6 as southern hardwood forest interspersed with patches of oak savanna and prairie. Plant genera typical of the eastern United States Temperate Zone, including ash, cherry, dogwood, elm, hackberry, hickory, maple, oak, and other woody and herbaceous genera, are present. The natural vegetation has been greatly modified by agricultural, logging, and mining operations. The species of the original flora are present, but not in their former relative abundance. Soils of this district belong, for the most part, to the Brunizem and Gray-Brown Podzolic great soil groups. The Brunizems are the soils developed under prairie vegetation.'' The Gray-Brown Podzolics are the soils developed under deciduous forests,18 They are derived from both bedrock and from loess parent materials, and

Previous laboratory studies have demonstrated that the injection of small quantities of reverse wetting agents during water displacement can increase oil recovery from unconsolidated porous media.9 In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to determine more fully the effects of reverse wetting treatments and to clarify the mechanism by which increased oil recovery is effected. Water-oil displacements were performed in beds of 140-200 mesh silica sand. Hexylamine slugs (injected after 0.25 pore volume of water throughput), when adequate in size and concentration, were effective in promoting additional oil recovery. Their effectiveness increased with the quantity of amine injected. However, slugs of sufficient size and concentration to stimulate oil production at water flow rates of 34 ft/day did not do so at 4 ft/day. Visual studies in a glass grid micromodel have shown that the stimulation of oil production, via ayueous hexylamine, is a result of transient changes in the oil wettability of the pore walls. if the amine slug is of sufficient size and concentration to induce significant changes in the adhesion-tension, large continuous oil masses will be formed. if the superficial water velocity is high enough to result in rapid desorption of the amine, a favorable "wettobility gradient" may be established across the masses; under such conditions, high oil mobility is observed, and increased oil recovery results. INTRODUCTION It is generally agreed that the efficiency of oil displacement by water in porous media is limited in part by capillary forces which cause the retention of isolated masses of oil — resulting in the so-called "irreducible minimum oil saturation". Recent estimates10 indicate that there are about 220 billion bbl of petroleum in United States reservoirs which are not economically recoverable with present techniques (such as water flooding). This amounts to almost five times the known recoverable reserves. It has been recognized for some time that a suitable alteration in the water-oil interfacial tension and/or the contact angle, as measured between the water-oil interface and the solid surface, should result in better displacement efficiency. Surface active agents can be used as interfacial tension depressants to accomplish this objective,1,2,7 but unfortunately, the additional oil recovery is seldom commensurate with the treatment cost. In contrast to interfacial tension depressants, the effect of contact angle alterations on water-oil displacements has received relatively little attention in the literature. It is known that the wettability affects the displacement process.3,4,11 Displacements in water-wet systems generally result in lower residual oil saturations than those in oil-wet systems. The effect of "'transient" wettability alterations concurrent with the displacement process have been investigated by Wagner, Leach and coworkers,4,11 wherein it has been demonstrated that the establishment of water-wet conditions during water flooding of oil-wet, oil-saturated porous media is accompanied by significant increase in oil displacement efficiency. Michaels and Timminss studied the effects of transient contact angle alterations resulting from chromatographic transport of reverse wetting agents through unconsolidated sand. It was demonstrated that chromatographic transport of short-chain (C4 through C8) primary aliphatic amines can improve oil recovery and that the recovery increases with the quantity of amine injected (i.e., with either the amine concentration or the volume of the slug injected). Circumstantial evidence indicated that the increased displacement efficiency resulted primarily from transient changes in wettability of the porous medium. In the Present investigation. additional information has been obtained on the effects of reverse wetting treatments and the mechanism by which increased oil recovery is accomplished. The same unusual grain structure, preferred orientation, and stringerlike dispersion of purticles are found in heal-ily rolled and annealed foil of tungsten which has heen doped wilh small amounts of aluminum, silicon, and polassiutvt. Both the proper dispersion of the particles and severe working (reductions in excess of 98 pct) are necessary to produce the elongzcted grain structure. RECENTLY, the author reported on the origin of the elongated or "nonsag" grain structure in tungsten foil which was doped with aluminum, silicon, and potassium.' It was observed that particles, identified as mullite (Al6Si2Ol3), were present in the doped ingot (as sintered) and at all stages of processing from ingot to sheet or wire. It was shown that the particles, being plastic at tungsten working temperatures (up to 1550"C), underwent a "stringing out" parallel to the working di-direction. It was concluded that these strings of particles were responsible for the formation of the highly elongated interlocking grains observed in doped tungsten wire or sheet. To give further credence to this explanation of a long-observed but not understood phenomenon, it was decided to design a new system, one which was analogous to the doped-tungsten system. Thus, a bcc metal, iron, was chosen to be doped with glass which would be plastic at reasonable working temperatures for iron. The glass chosen was a #0080 Corning lime glass which melts at about 810°C. This is approximately the same fraction of the melting point of iron (0.6) as the melting temperature of mullite is of tungsten. It will be shown that all the observed unusual features of the doped tungsten are duplicated in the glass. doped iron, even to the preferred orientation of the grains in the recrystallized sheet. In the tungsten sheet the preferred orientation consists of two components, (1i3)(691) and (013)(362), neither of which has been observed as a component in textures of primary recrystallized bcc metals. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The glass, in the form of fine powder, was added to high-purity electrolytic iron powder and mixed dry. The particular composition chosen was 0.007 vol fraction of glass. After mixing, the powder was mechanically pressed to a disk 0.5 in. diam and 0.15 in. thick at a pressure of 5000 psi. The pellet was sintered, in pure dry hydrogen, for 2 hr at 8 50°C. The sintered pellet was then heated to 750°C and rolled to 50 pct reduction of thickness in two passes, with reheating between passes. The rolling temperature was then reduced to 600°C and the slab was rolled to a thickness of 0.050 in. Rolling to 0.010 in. was accomplished in several passes at 300°C. Final reductions to 0.003 and 0.001 in. were taken at room temperature. This rolling temperature schedule was similar, in terms of the fraction of the melting point, to that used in the rolling of the doped tungsten. The total reduction of thickness was in excess of 99 pct. Samples of the rolled foil were lightly electro-polished and annealed for 1 to 6 hr at temperatures of 650" to 85O°C in hydrogen. Samples for transmission electron microscopy were thinned on a Disa Electropol using AC-1 electrolyte.

During the course of a study on the periodic precipitation (Liesegang phenomenon) of water vapor bubbles in solid silver, some interesting observations were made concerning the formation and growth of these bubbles. Under certain conditions it was found that the bubbles which formed in the single crystals led to the formation of large blisters ad cracks, and when poly crystalline specimens were used grain boundary cracking was observed. These two phenomena were examined in some detail, and it was found that an important step in the formation of the blisters and grain boundary cracks was the impingement of neighboring bubbles. DURING the study of Liesegang precipitation in solid silver,' some interesting observations were made concerning the formation and growth of water vapor bubbles. The bubbles were formed by annealing oxygen-saturated silver in hydrogen. Because of the similarity of this phenomenon to the hydrogen embrittlement of tough pitch copper,' it is known in the literature" as the hydrogen embrittlement of silver. In some respects it appears that the hydrogen embrittlement of silver is similar to the processes of hydrogen attack of steel5 and blister formation.' Hydrogen attack results from the high-temperature reaction of hydrogen with dissolved carbon or carbides in the steel to form methane (usually at grain boundaries). Blister formation occurs in steel and other materials as a result of hydrogen produced by corrosion, pickling, and so forth. Because of these similarities, some speculations were made concerning these other processes. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Water vapor bubbles were formed in 99.999+, 99.99+, and 99.9 pct Ag by annealing in a partial pressure of oxygen (pq) until saturated and then in a partial pressure of hydrogen (pH,). The hydrogen diffuses into the silver and reacts with the dissolved oxygen to form water vapor which precipitates in the form of bubbles. The specimens were then sectioned, silver-plated, mounted in cold-setting plastic, ground and polished through a preliminary polishing, and finally chemically polished.' The bubbles were visible without etching.

If interfacial equilibrium is maintained at the interface between a growing precipitate and the supersaturated matrix, so that solute diffusion alone determines the growth rate, the precipitate shape should evolve toward that characteristic of the dendrites found in solidification. However, this shape is rarely observed in precipitation reactions proceeding at high temperatures where interfacial equilibrium is usually felt to prevail. Thus some other stabilizing factor must enter, to keep the interface smooth. It is shown that a slow interfacial reaction (low interfacial mobility) will stabilize the interface, while transformation stresses have a IN studying the kinetics of phase transformations such as solidification or proeutectoid precipitation at high temperatures, it is customary to assume that equilibrium exists across the interface and that the rate of the reaction is determined by the rate at which heat and solute diffuse to and from the interface. In the case of precipitation, such an assumption predicts an almost infinite rate of initial growth. It is generally stated that the rate cannot be infinite and that during some initial period the rate must be determined not by solute diffusion but by an interfacial reaction, i.e., transferring atoms across the interface. The duration of this much weaker stabilizing eFfect and impurities tend to enhance instability. It is also concluded that a sets an upper limit on the wavelength of the perturbation that can give instability. Thus initially all flat or smoothly curved particle interfaces will be stable even if their growth is diffusion-controlled. Proeutectoid precipitation in the Fe-C system is considered in some detail and it is shown that the experimental results can only be rationalized if the growth rate of ferrite in steel transformations is determined by a slow interfacial reaction for all hut a few orientations between the two phases. initial period has never been clearly established, but it is generally assumed to be too short to affect any measurable results.' Several authors have pointed out that in the case of interfacial equilibrium any bump in the surface will grow out ahead of the planar interface due to the higher gradient in front of it.2j3 Thus the interface will be unstable with respect to an irregular interface with points (plates) propagating rapidly out ahead of the interface into the supersaturated phase. Recently, Mullins and Sekerka have given equations for the stabilizing effect of surface tenion.~ They found that for particles with a radius of curvature of 1 p or greater the stabilizing effect of surface tension will be completely overcome by a supercooling, or supersaturation, of as little as

A method is described by whichX-ray pole figures and axis density figures may be plotted automatically. The X-ray data are obtained using a Siemens texture gonionleter and the Schulz reflection method. Composite sampling methods are used to obtain a full quadrant of the pole figure. The contour lines of the pole figure and axis density figures are drawn using a computer-controlled x-y plotter. The computer program used to draw the contours was obtained from ZBM. POLE figures used to describe crystallographic orientations of poly crystalline sheet materials are usually plotted manually from X-ray diffraction output in the form of a strip chart recording of the intensity distribution of a given crystallographic pole in physical space. Today's computers and associated plotting equipment now make it possible to plot pole figures and axis density figures automatically. Inverse pole figures have been determined by mathematically "inverting" X-ray pole figure data.'-' In general, these methods require complicated, time-consuming numerical calculations. A more economical but less accurate method is to determine the axis densities of low-index crystallographic poles using an X-ray diffractometer. When these axis densities are plotted in a unit stereographic triangle contour lines can be drawn to represent the axis density distribution. This can now be done automatically. Computers were used to plot pole figures by a method developed by Holland, Engler, and powers.' In their method intensity ratios based on a random standard sample were obtained from a strip chart recording, and the stereographic (x, y) coordinates of these ratios were determined by a computer. Symbols characteristic of different intensity ratio levels were then plotted using an automatic x, y plotter and intensity contours were drawn manually. The present paper describes a method by which pole figures and axis density figures have been automatically plotted from digital data obtained from a Siemens X-ray unit. Plotting was accomplished using an IBM 1620 computer and a Calcomp 563 digital plotter. COMPUTER PROGRAM The computer program was obtained from IBM Systems Reference Library, No. 1620-CS-05X, and was designed to plot contour maps from randomly distributed data. It consists of a set of twelve separate subprograms, four of which were used in this work. The program takes a given distribution of data points and by a numerical method determines the values at mesh points of a square grid system superimposed over the input data. The output data from this program is in a form suitable for input to the contour plotting program. A smoothing program is also available which calculates new mesh point values from a continuous function fitted to neighboring mesh points. The degree of smoothing depends on the number of points around a given grid point which are used to adjust or smooth the grid value. The contour plotting program is designed to allow the user to specify the interval, scale, and annotation of the contours to be plotted. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Pole Figure Data Points. One of the most important problems facing the steel industry at the present time is that of maintaining at a minimum the sulphur content of many grades of steel where sulphur is known to have harmful effects On both quality and yield. The present outlook in this struggle to reduce the amount of sulphur in steel is rather gloomy since the sulphur content of the raw materials available in the United States is gradually rising, with little relief in sight. A flow sheet of sulphur in the steel process is shown in Fig I. The values used here were obtained by averaging coke oven and blast furnace data at No. 5 furnace in Cleveland and are considered typical for high top pressure practice. The sulphur evolved in the blast furnace top gas was obtained by difference and since the amount is relatively small, little significance should be attached to this particular value. From Fig I it is apparent, however, that coals used in the production of metallurgical coke represent by far the largest single source of sulphur in steel-making. As an indication of the decrease in quality of these coals as regards sulphur content the weighed average annual sulphur analysis of the coals supplied to two different steel plants, since 1925, is plotted in Fig 2} The sharp rise since 1940 is strikingly apparent. Another indication of this trend is found in estimates of coking coal reserves. Thus in the case of Pittsburgh seam coals available in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Counties in Pa. as of Jan. 1937 only 25 pct of the coal reserves would contain less than 1.50 pct sulphur after washing.2.3 Many of these lower sulphur reserves have been seriously depleted in recent years because of accelerated war demands. still another demonstration of the increasing sulphur content of coals on a country-wide basis is found in a report by the Bureau of Mines4 which shows a steady increase in the sulphur content of coke made in the United States. It should be noted that this increase continues in spite of the wider use of coal washing in recent years. Sulphur occurs in coal in three forms, pyritic (FeS2), organic sulphur, and a small amount of sulphate sulphur (CaS04). The sulphur is subsequently found in the coke in combination with carbonaceous material of is composition and as calcium and iron sulphides' In considering the general problem of sulphur elimination, the Republic Steel Corp. was interested in determining which, if either, of the two major forms of sulphur in coal contributes the greater portion of sulphur to the coke. Since the ratio of pyritic to organic sulphur varies widely in different coals, it was thought that if it could be shown definitely that the major part of the sulphur occurring in coke originates from one of the two ""jar forms of sulphur in the coal, it would then be possible to select with confidence coal which, although high .in total sulphur, would yield coke of fairly low sulphur content. The rediffraction of Bragg diffracted beams by differently oriented regions (such as twins) of a crystal may give rise to "extra" reflections or reciprocal lattice points. These two papers are concerned with predicting these additional reflections which result from twin related regions of a lattice. Analysis is made for {111}fcc twins, (112)bcc twins, and {hkil}hcp twins. It is first required, knowing the specific variant of the twinning plane in each case, to predict the positions of the twin reflections relative to the matrix reciprocal lattice. Once this is done, the positions of the "extra" multiply diffracted reflections may be deduced. Part I is devoted to establishing "selection ru1es" for twinning, i.e., the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of twinned reciprocal lattice points. 1. INTRODUCTION. Transmission electron diffraction patterns are frequently complicated by multiply diffracted beams. Pashley and stowell1 have recently demonstrated that certain extra reflections in evapo- rated films of gold result from the rediffraction of matrix Bragg diffracted beams by (111) microtwins in the gold. It was previously (and erroneously) suggested 2,3 that observed "irrational" reflections in fine-grained gold were due to the presence of some hcp gold. A similar situation exists, apparently, for some bcc materials; fine (112) twins in bcc martensite in Fe-Ni alloys4 give rise to extra reflections. There are many other examples. The number of transmission electron microscopic investigations is continually increasing, and because of the importance of double (and multiple) diffraction in the interpretation of diffraction patterns, it was judged that a detailed elaboration of the principles involved is desirable, as well as the extension of these principles in reasonably closed form to other crystal structures, particularly bcc and hcp. The present analysis considers double diffraction caused by (111) twins in fcc metals, (112) twins in bcc metals, and {hkil} = {hkl) twins in hcp metals. For each case of twinning, the various possible (variants of) twins give rise to a set of interpenetrating reciprocal lattices. The relative spatial arrangements of these reciprocal lattices can be deduced (Part I) and are expressed in terms of simple "selection rules". The resulting sets of interpenetrating reciprocal lattices are then analyzed for possible doubly diffracted reflections (Part II). The notation used, and some important formulas are given in Appendices I and 11.

THE properties of the company lie within the Pachuca district, State of Hidalgo, Mexico, connected by three railway lines with Mexico City, 55 miles southwest, and by two lines with Vera Cruz, 250 miles southeast. The ores were formerly divided by sorting into two classes, smelting and milling, the former averaging about 2 oz. gold and 335 oz. silver, the latter 0.12 oz. gold and 23 oz. silver. The smelting ores were sold to custom plants, principally the American Smelting & Refining. Co. at Aguascalientes. The milling ores were treated by the patio process at the Guadalupe Hacienda, at Pachuca. This patio was probably the largest in existence at the time and continued in active operation up to March, 1910. In January, 1910, the mines and patio were sold to English interests, represented by Camp Bird Limited. Two new companies were formed, the Compañia de Santa Gertrudis, S. A., to operate the mines, and the Compañia Beneficiadora de Pachuca, S. A., to build and operate a custom cyanide milling plant. (Fig. 1.) GEOLOGY The historical geology of the Pachuca district is described by Fred J. Pope as follows: 1. The most recent sedimentary rocks in the district belong to the Cretaceous period. 2. The Cretaceous rocks were penetrated by large intrusions of ande-site (referred to hereafter as primary andesite) which occur as elliptical dome-shaped masses, striking northwest-southeast. These andesite bodies are from 8 to 15 miles long and from 6 to 10 miles wide. 3. A period of erosion during which the contour of the andesite domes was changed. 4. Andesite flows (secondary andesite) which rest unconformably on the primary andesites.

KNOWING the endpoint, or the equilibrium state, in steelmaking reactions is only part of the story. The rate at which the reactions proceed can be equally important. But the power of thermodynamics, which enables us to estimate the endpoint, is that a knowledge of the mechanism is not required. The methods of kinetics, however, are step-by-step analysis in which a knowledge of the detailed reaction mechanism is essential. As is evident from Chapter 16, a great deal of thermo- dynamic data for steelmaking are available and the underlying theory rests on a completely sound basis. This is far from the case with kinetic data and even kinetic theory. Nevertheless, it is worthwhile to examine the present state of knowledge, to see how far it may be applied to electric furnace reactions. KINETIC THEORY Heterogeneous Reactions. Classical kinetic theory and experimentation have been mainly concerned with homogeneous reactions taking place between different chemical species in a gas or liquid phase. The species are mixed together and the progress of the reaction can then be observed. This is possible because most experiments have been done at relatively low temperatures where the characteristic time for the mixing process is much shorter than the time for the chemical reaction to be completed. For example, in the homogeneous gas reaction, H2 (g) + I2 (g) 2HI (g) hydrogen and iodine may be added to opposite ends of a tube containing a diaphragm. When this is withdrawn, gaseous diffusion (and convection) mixes the two types of molecule almost completely before any hydrogen iodide molecules begin to appear. Such an experiment is inconceivable at more elevated temperatures, since the rate of the chemical process is so sensitive to temperature that reaction would be completed almost instantaneously wherever hydrogen and iodine came into contact; the rate of the mixing process would then determine the rate at which hydrogen iodide was formed. We should not, therefore, expect to observe many homogeneous reac-

Phase transformations in a series of relatively pure nickel-titanium-aluminum binary and ternary alloys were studied. The purpose was to clarify age-hardening mechanisms, especially in predominantly titanium-hardened compositions. The micro-structures, as determined on a tirne-temperature-transformation basis by light and electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, were correlated with room temperature and hot hardnesses. The stability of the ? phase under nonequilibrium conditions was shown to be important in this system. MANY of the alloys designed for service in the temperature range of 1200oF (649°C) to 1800°F (980°C) are austenitic iron-.nickel base alloys hardened by titanium and aluminum. The control of high-temperature properties of these alloys has been advanced by the knowledge of microstructures provided by the equilibrium diagrams of Taylor and Floyd1 and Taylor.2, 3 However, there have been notable instances in the predominantly titanium-hardened alloys where the correlation of properties with microstructure and the equilibrium diagrams has been unsuccessful. Mihalisin and carrol14 have noted in electron microscope studies of commercial alloys of this type that a fee phase precipitates and transforms to 71 (hep Ni3Ti) in stress-rupture tests. Bieber5 found that this fee phase remained in nickel-chromium-titanium alloys even when aluminum was excluded. Age hardening in iron-nickel base alloys has been attributed to 71 by Craver, Aggen, and Dyrkacz,6 ? (fee phase based on Ni3Al) by Beattie and Hagel7 and both phases by Lena,8 Yet, on the basis of the nickel-titanium-aluminum equilibrium diagram of Taylor and Floyd shown in Fig. 1, it has been difficult to understand the presence of ? in low aluminum alloys. Furthermore, the characteristic coarse dispersion of 71 has not been commensurate with the marked aging response. Also there have been anomalous grain boundary transformations in the iron-nickel base alloys which have markedly reduced notched stress rupture properties.9 These have been related to boron content and residual cold work. Recently, Golubtsova and Mashkovich,10 Buckle and Manene11 and Bogaryatskii and Tyapkin12 have noted a transition fee Ni3Ti in titanium-hardened nickel-base alloys. It was apparent from the latter studies that a transition phase was important in the nickel-titanium-aluminum system. The purpose of this study was to identify this phase, measure its transformation characteristics and kinetics, and attempt to correlate these findings with age hardening. It was believed that time-temperature-transformation studies, because of their adaptability to transition phases, would be of most value for this investigation. Accordingly, this method of study was undertaken on relatively pure nickel-titanium-aluminum alloys with controlled variations in boron content and residual cold work. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Compositions were selected from the nickel-titanium-aluminum isothermal section of Taylor and Floyd.' These compositions are plotted in Fig. 1 and were selected to obtain equal aging potential of approximately 15 pet by volume of the equilibrium precipitate. The materials were vacuum melted from

The resistance to dry sliding abrasion us been measured for some hardened and tempered carbon steels. The wear resistance, defined as the reciprocal of the volume loss per unit sliding distance, is found to vary linearly with the hardness of the abraded surface. The data fit two lines, one, of high slope, for the pure metals and for the annealed steels and another, of smaller slope, for the hardened and tempered carbon steels. A relationship is developed showing the alwasion resistance to be proportional to the hardness of the material and to en, where n is the exponent of work hardening. The values of n and of the hardness FOR most materials a high resistance to abrasion is generally associated with a high value of indentation hardness. Brine11 even used the abrasion resistance as a measure of hardness in an attempt at expanding the hardness range covered by his indentation-hardness test.' When comparing different types of materials there is, however, only a very general relation between abrasion resistance and hardness. Sample brittleness seems to contribute to the deviation from a direct relationship. In general, increased brittle- are those relating to the heavily deformed abraded surface. However, for materials having n constant or varying m a regular manner over a wide range of strailts, the wear resistance will also be a linear function of the bulk hardness of the material. For tempered steels containing a dispersion of cementite in ferrite the increase in wear resistance due to the dispersion is found to be a linear function of the volume fraction of Fe3C and of the reciprocal of the mean free ferrite path. This indicates indirectly that the yielding of this material, when it is already heavily deformed, follows the Orowan criterion. ness leads to decreased abrasion resistance.' When comparing materials in the same group, e.g., the metals, the spread is less. Kruschov found that the abrasion resistance of pure metals and of annealed steels is directly proportional to the hardness of the metal. For hardened and tempered steels he obtained another linear relationship, one of smaller slope and intersecting the line for the pure metals at the location of the data for the annealed steels. He also found that the abrasion resistance of cold-worked metals is independent of the degree of cold working. This shows, as he concluded, that the process of abrasion work hardens the metal in the surface region to a very high degree.

Korea, the ancient" Hermit Kingdom," is a peninsula jutting out from the coast of eastern Asia. By the natives it is called " Chosen," nfhich, translated, means " Land of the Morning Calm." It lies between the Yellow sea and the Sea of Japan. On the north it is separated from Manchuria and the Russian province of Primorsk by the Yalu and Tiumen rivers; on the south the Korcan straits interpose a rough voyage of 120 nliles to the nearest point in Japan. The entire country is situated between the parallels of 34O and 42O N. latitude. The surface of the country is made up of successive ranges of ul~glaciated mountains, separated by narrow, fertile, and more or less densely populated, valleys. Through all the obscure centuries of its history, Korea has succeeded in maintaining a monastic seclusion, over which, from time immeniorial until the late Chino-Japanese war in 1894, China exercised a shadowy sovereignty. Although Korea had been forced into slight foreign contact previously, her first forcign treaty was signed with Japan in 1876. Under the restraining guardianship of China, the Japanese treaty bore but infiignificant innovations for Korea; but when, in 1883, a treaty was made with the United States, the first of the western nations, a decade after the American gunboats, under Commodore Rodgers and Lieutenant Schley, forced their may up the Salee river, Korea awoke from her sleep of 4,000 years. The Eorean peninsula suddenly became the arena where the enterprises and individuals of many foreign nations met in fiercest rivalry. Out of this struggle grew two singularly successful American enterprises, both of which have played an important part in developing the natural resources of the country. Mineral fillers are employed in United States industries to the extent of more than seven million tons annually, valued in excess of a hundred million dollars. This substantial usage involves a wide variety of mineral materials. To this may be added products manufactured from minerals, such as carbon black, portland cement, lime or chemically precipitated calcium carbonates, which would add substantially to the total. The purposes for which fillers are used differ considerably. Minerals used as fillers are mostly silicates, silicas, and carbonates as referred to hereinafter. The term "mineral filler" has various meanings in mineral technology and in the arts. Fillers are comparatively inert and their action is mainly physical. Materials that are employed primarily for chemical reactivity, or for pigment or abrasive functions ordinarily would not be considered to be fillers when used for these purposes. Nearly all filler usages are based on advantages which are gained by desired modification of composition properties or by improvements in processing. A simple definition for a filler is an inert material that is included in a composition for some useful purpose. This definition may be amplified or made more specific for each of the filler usages, the major ones of which are: paints, paper, plastics, rubber, bituminous compositions, pesticides and fertilizers. There are in addition a whole host of minor usages. Powdered minerals when employed as components in paints, varnishes and lacquers are considered as extender pigments or low refractive index pigments. In paper, the term loading material as well as filler is used; in pesticides, the terms diluents and carriers connote different functions. For bituminous compositions, rubber and plastics, the usage of the simple word "filler" is more usual, but the designation loading material is sometimes used. Minerals Used as Fillers Most of the industrial minerals, and many rock powders are employed to some extent for different filler uses. These usages vary from year to year depending on availabilities, costs, technologic trends and advancements. For the major applications, however, and for the more particular requirements at any given period, there are general trends which favor a more or less restricted group of filler products for each of the major consumer fields. This selection of materials is determined by the characteristics of the individual filler products, their effectiveness in fulfilling the primary function or functions for which they may be employed, and the cost after incorporation in the finished product. The mineral-bearing materials of major importance as fillers are: limestones, clays of several types, talc, pyrophyllite, mica, barite, diatomite, crystalline silicas, asbestos, slate and other rock dusts. Others of secondary importance include: gypsum, vermiculite, phosphate rock, perlite, and pulverized wastes, such as slag and fly ash. A considerable number of other minerals are used to lesser extent. Among these minor mineral materials are: feldspar, pumicite, wollastonite,18 tripoli, nepheline syenite,6 coal, altered volcanic rock and others.2 Indeed, most mineral materials, when reduced to fine particle size may have some potential usage as fillers, depending on their properties, availability and price. Some attention should be given to definitions. The term "unit operation " may have at least two meanings. One meaning is the merging of titles and the development and operation of the unitized area, as if it were one tract of land held under a single oil and gas lease, according to a definite program intended to accomplish a maximum recovery from the pool as a whole at a minimum of cost. It is incomplete when the royalty owners do not also merge their titles to their oil and gas rights in the area, and is complete when they do. The other meaning is not accompanied by any merger of titles, but the development and operation of the area is in accordance, as nearly as reasonably practicable, with such a program. This second conception may be nothing more than a cooperative development and operation plan, but in this paper it is regarded as more than that. If there cannot be unit operation without a merger of titles, it would seem that the state cannot require unit operation, for it cannot require a merging of titles; but if it may consist in requiring each and all of the leaseholders to develop and operate or to submit to a development and operation according to some such common plan as is referred to above without at the same time requiring a merger of titles, it would seem that unit operation may be required by the state. Whether the states have this power is the subject to be herein considered. If the state can so bind the several lessees, it also can so bind the several lessors. The writer does not know what would be an ideal plan for the development and operation of a pool; but it takes into account the fact that the accumulation of gas and oil is not uniform throughout the formation; that often free gas, highly compressed, occupies the upper portions of the reservoir, the oil with compressed gas in solution coming next in order; that at places oil is not overlain by free gas, and sometimes there are peaks where free gas is not immediately underlain by any oil; and the fact that these substances are held under a uniformly distributed pressure, generally referred to as "rock pressure." It also recognizes that the most efficient utilization of this naturally existing reservoir pressure in the recovery of the oil requires that there be no operation of wells completed into areas where gas only has accumulated, for this diminishes the
