An unusually large number of crystals of magnetite obtained in the exploitation of a deposit of magnetic iron-ore of remarkable purity, encouraged the preparation of this paper, and its presentation at this time, that the matter might go on record in the Transactions. To make this record more complete, a preliminary statement is offered concerning the district and locality in which the ore is found. To the northeastern portion of the State of New York the United States is indebted for a large percentage of the iron-ore which has assisted in developing the resources and industries of the nation. As early as 1804, iron-ore was mined between Lake Champlain and the Adirondack mountains, and this district has since been an important and continuous contributor to our iron-ore supply. HERETOFORE, there has been very little study of the effects of various metallurgical factors on the behavior of thermoelectric materials, the need for which is evident if optimum processing and design of thermoelectric devices is to be realized. Accordingly, we have undertaken such an investigation on the thermoelectric materials bismuth and Bi-Sb alloy and in this paper present some preliminary results which merit consideration, in particular the relatively high thermoelectric power and figure of merit values obtained for the Bi-12Sb (at. pct) alloy powder compacts. The thermoelectric parameters for ingot and powder compact specimens are determined and the results are compared with published data for single crystals. Preparation of Materials. The bismuth and antimony used in this investigation are six nines pure. Melting and casting of the ingots was carried out in air for expediency, since most oxidation unavoidably occurs during the preparation of the powder by filing of the ingots. Chill cast ingots of pure bismuth were prepared by pouring the melt into split copper chill molds, and unidirectionally solidified ingots of bismuth and Bi-Sb alloy were obtained by slow directional cooling in pyrex tubes. All melts remained bright during melting and casting, indicating minimum oxidation. Powder for the powder compact samples was obtained by filing the ingots with a fine and coarse file to give a variation in the particle size of the compacts. BY far the most conspicuous of the Pennsylvania slate districts is that extending from the New Jersey line at the Delaware Water Gap westward almost to the Schuylkill River. This covers parts of three counties in east-central Pennsylvania: Northampton, Lehigh, and Berks. The most important development, both in geographic size and product importance, is in Lehigh and Northampton counties. The greater part of the region is underlain by only one formation-the Martinsburg, consisting of slates, clay slates, and sandy shales, all of the Ordovician period. The slate-bearing Martinsburg formation is underlain by Cambro-Ordovician limestones. Immediately overlying the Martinsburg formation is the Tuscarora quartzite of the Silurian period. The Martinsburg formation itself is divided into three distinct divisions, termed simply: the upper, the middle, and the lower members. Commercial slate has been extracted from all of these members, but the formation of greatest importance is the upper member, representing 2600 ft of the total formation thickness of nearly 11,000 ft. The upper member is commonly referred to as the "soft slate" and consists of three facies: 1) beds of blue-gray, very sandy, almost quartzitic slate, in many places, approximately a medium-coarse sand- stone with calcareous cement; 2) blue-gray sericitic slat-the dominant rock type of this member-with occasional chloritic beds; and 3) dark gray or virtually black, highly carbonaceous beds, referred to locally as "ribbons."

THE preper classification of mining methods has received the earnest study of many mining engineers and has resulted in much technical controversy, depending no doubt upon the point from which classification is viewed or the use to which it is put. So far as the writer is aware, the discussion has invariably centered around the classification of underground mining methods, and only superficial attention has been directed to surface methods. Volume 72, page 10, of the Institute Transactions, presents such a classification, sponsored by the Mining Methods Committee of the Institute. A similar classification by Prof. Hugh P. Nicholson appeared in Mining and Metallurgy in October, 1934. The two classifications are quite different in their treatment of underground methods but are identical in classifying surface methods, although Professor Nicholson does suggest possible further divisions for surface mining and admits that such subdivision is more difficult than appears at first. RECENTLY, areas of abnormal rock pressure have been drilled on the Gulf Coast of the United States. These pressures may be caused by the recent and pronounced raising of some of the structures without loss of the formation pressure that existed when the reservoir was developing and the producing sand much more deeply buried. It is possible also that a permeable fissure may connect a shallow accumulation of gas with the gas cap of a much deeper reservoir of oil, gas and water. The pressures are so great that dependence on blowout-prevention equipment alone is hazardous to life and property. Fortunately, wells with excessive casing-head pressures, such as the Stanolind Oates No. 1 of the South Houston field, an 8700-ft. gas well with 6000 lb. per sq. in., and the near-by Stanolind Candelari No. 1, and 8100-ft. gas well with 5000 lb. per sq. in., have not blown out and cratered. A case is on record of drill pipe in a, well in Harris County, Texas, (Oates No. 1) rotating for 8 hr. through blowout-prevention rants holding a back pressure of 2900 1b. per sq. in. at the casinghead after the mud was altered by salt-water intrusion. Such conditions warrant the use of extremely heavy muds having low viscosity, made from galena (PbS) or specially prepared mixtures of hematite (Fe203) and galena suspended by bentonite. In some Gulf Coast wells, sodium silicate mixed with concentrated brine is used to drill through heaving shale formations. Such a fluid inhibits heaving remarkably, but it is expensive and costs as much as $10 per barrel. Barite has been used to weight this mixture. However, this mineral too rapidly increased an already excessive viscosity and it was thought that galena might be better for weighting such drilling fluid. The operator was anxious to try the latter, but none was available in the district.

THE copper mines of the Katanga region in the Belgian Congo lie along the same mineralized belt as those of Northern Rhodesia. There are two distinct types of deposits in that belt, the dolomitic and the quartzitic. In the dolomitic type the metallic minerals are found in a dolomitic limestone country rock. Through oxidation and enrichment, large deposits of high-grade oxidized copper ores were formed, some of which are being worked by the Union Miniere du Haut Katanga. Such deposits are all in Katanga. The quartzitic deposits are found in Katanga and Northern Rhodesia. Here the primary mineralization occurred in sandstones and quartzites, in horizons stratigraphically lower than the dolomites. These rocks are not favorable to secondary enrichment and the oxidized zone is poorer than the sulphide zone, which alone contains the ore. There are also in Katanga a few ore-bearing veins. One of them is being worked in the Prince Leopold mine at Kipushi.

THE Parkes process lead refinery of the International Lead Refining Co., at East Chicago, was built by the International Smelting & Refining Co. to treat the lead bullion produced by its Tooele plant, at Tooele, Utah. The plant was designed and constructed under the direction of the writer. Ground was broken Apr. 16, 1912, and exactly six months later the plant was in operation and lead was being cast. The capacity of the plant, running 25 days per month, is 5,000 tons. The four products of the plant are common lead, corroding lead, antimonial lead, and Doré bullion. The site is an area, 64 acres in extent, lying north of 151st Street, between McCook Avenue and the Canal. The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, Baltimore & Ohio Chicago Terminal, and Pennsylvania Railroad enter, the yard at the plant. There are five, storage tracks and space for storing 100 cars in the yard. The oxidation of CbO was studied by a gravimetric technique from 400° to 1200°C in oxygen. In this temperature range the oxidatiotz is characterized by an irlductive period of low oxidation rate, which becomes shorter as the temperature increases, followed by a rapid parabolic oxidation. The oxidation of CbO cannot be rate controlling in the oxidation of Cb metal in the temperature range, 800° to 1200°C. A thin optically inactive layer has been observed between the metal and Cb2O5 layer of Cb oxidized at 700°C or higher temperatures. Figs. 1(a) and 1(b) show the edge of a sample of Cb reacted to 50 pct of complete oxidation at 800°C. W. F. Hosford, (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) —evelopment of methods for predicting the plastic anisotropy of textured metals is an important step toward the improvement of properties by texture control. The engineering value of the present analysis is indicated by the good agreement between prediction and experimental findings. The purpose of this discussion, however, is to point out the weakness of the assumptions on which the analysis is based. The authors state that "the relative width and thickness strains are believed to depend only on the slip direction" and accordingly they disregard the orientation of the active slip plane. where E,, cW, and et are the tensile, width, and thickness strains, A,, A,, and At are the angles between the tensile axis x, the width direction w, and the thickness direction t, respectively; and G,, GW, and 4 are the angles between the slip-plane normal and x, w, and t, respectively. Therefore, the ratio of width to thickness strains resulting from slip on a single system would be These relations hold regardless of whether the slip plane is a crystallographic plane of the {110}, (1121, or (123) type or whether noncrystallographic slip occurs. If noncrystallographic slip occurs, it might be reasonable to assume that the effective slip plane is the most highly stressed plane containing the slip direction. Since 1571, when the Institute was founded, many of the most important papers in the English language, on the various phases of mining and metallurgy, have appeared as Institute publications. As members of the Institute regularly receive the publications in which they are interested, this discussion is primarily for nonmembers who wish to know of them. The Institute has several means of issuing papers which have been submitted and accepted. The monthly journal, Mining and Metallurgy, is the magazine of the Institute. In it appear notices and reports of official business as well as many papers and contributions which do not appear otherwise. The annual subscription price of the magazine to nonmembers is $3 per year; Canadian and foreign postage $1 extra; single copies 50 cents; back issues $1 each. Many papers are published separately each year. They are issued in one or the other of two numbered series; namely, Technical Publications and Contributions, and of the latter there are four forms: Preprints, Mimeographs, Reprints, and Unpublished Manuscripts. A Technical Publication or Contribution (in any form) is issued by the Institute when it is listed in Mining and Metallurgy. Technical Publications are sent automatically to members who have asked in advance for papers on a given subject. All members are entitled to a copy of every paper in either series, except when a Contribution is an Unpublished Manuscript. Con¬tributions in the form of Unpublished Manuscripts are filed in the Engineering Societies Library and copies of some of these papers may be found in a few selected libraries throughout the country.

INTRODUCTION The treatment of colloidal suspensions is a subject of increasing interest in mining and benefication (1). Colloidal suspensions are not readily operated upon by mechanical and physical methods useful with coarse suspensions, such as filtration, thickening, and flotation. This is because colloids are strongly affected by interfacial and interparticle forces that may be large compared with, and resistant to, external forces. The degree and type of interactions between colloids can be modified by small additions of reagents such as coagulants, flocculants, dispersants, and immiscible liquids. These alterations in turn change the properties of the suspension and provide possible opportunities for transforming suspensions to a more favorable condition for a given processing operation. Phosphate slimes are an example of a colloidal system of interest today. In the mining and beneficiation of phosphate rock in Florida, slimes are a waste product. The phosphate ore (called matrix in the industry) is slurrified hydraulically and pumped to a beneficiation plant, where the -150 mesh material is removed by cycloning from the coarser phosphate rock and silica. The resulting -150 mesh slurry, called phosphate slime, is pumped to large impoundments. The solid content of the slime entering the impoundment is around four weight percent, and over 80% of the solids is less than one micron in size. The immediate problems with phosphate slime relate to their disposal (2, 3). The disposal problem is associated with the very large volumes and the poor dewatering characteristics of the slimes. Well logging provides valuable information for planning coal mining operations. In addition to locating, defining, and evaluating coal beds, electrical logs indicate the relative competence of roof and floor formations. Electrical well logging is the .recording of various physical, chemical, or physicochemical properties of the strata penetrated by a drill hole. To perform logging operations, borehole measuring probes, or sondes, are lowered on a cable into the drill hole. Insulated conductors in the cable pass power to the sonde and transmit signals to the surface. As the sonde is pulled up the hole, the measurements are recorded as a well log. These measurements serve to define the formation lithology. Common rock minerals exhibit characteristic log values such that computer analysis of the log data defines the mineral content of the formations. Shales, carbonates and sandstones, and coal beds are readily distinguished. Furthermore, preliminary results in coal studies indicate the log data delineates variations in ash and moisture contents. Of major concern in planning mining operations is knowledge of roof and floor competence. Here again the logs provide valuable information. Measurements of formation density and acoustic wave velocity provide data for computation of a compressional modulus. This compressional modulus is an effective index of formation competence. Electrical logging thus efficiently provides information for economic planning of mining operations.

THE high tension belt conveyor is introducing a new and tremendously expanded era of low cost bulk material handling. High tension belt conveyors are generally those installations involving very long centers, high lifts, or drops, in which the belts are stressed up to their maximum tension values, and further, where the belt construction provides tension capacity far beyond what is possible with conventional belt constructions. With these high tension installations, the magnitude of the forces involved demands careful refinement of accepted design practice in order to achieve optimum balance of all factors.

IN the broad survey of the nonferrous' metallic elements contained in this book, the reader may well be impressed by the wide range of property combinations offered by the many metals and alloys the metallurgist has prepared since before Kubla Khan. The diversity is great and the overlap is considerable. It is particularly surprising, then, to find the latest structural metal new- comer designated by such extravagant terms as "Cinderella Metal," "Wonder Metal," "Miracle Metal," "The Metal of Tomorrow," "Dream Metal or Nightmare?" and "The Middleweight Champion of the Structural Metals." Of these and others, the most appropriate designation for the metal involved, titanium, appears to be that of The Middleweight Champion. Its intermediate density of 4.5 and elastic modulus of 16 million is a unique combination between the lower density and modulus of magnesium and aluminum and the higher density and modulus of copper, nickel, and iron. It is light, strong, ductile, and corrosion resistant. A chemical neighbor in group IV of the Periodic Table, zirconium, is similar to titanium in many respects but is appreciably denser, 6.5 instead of 4.5, less stiff and relatively much less abundant. On the other hand, the resistance of zirconium to acids and alkalies is better than that of titanium. Also, compensating for its higher density, lower stiffness, and somewhat lower strength level compared with titanium, zirconium has much better permeability to slow neutrons and is much more suitable as a material of construction for nuclear reactors.

The dissociation of cupric oxide to cuprous oxide and oxygen was studied with a microbalmce technique at 700" to 750°C. In this temperature range the dissociation pressure of the reaction 2CuO= Cu2O + 1/2 O2 was: The theory of near-equilibriwm reaction rates predicts a linear relationship between reaction rate and the Gibbs free-energy change for small values of AF/RT. This correlation is found to be valid for AF/RT = -0.1 or approximately 200 cal per mole away from equilibrium. THE theory of reaction rates near equilibrium as developed from classical thermodynamics suggests a small range of linear behavior between the overall reaction rate and the free-energy change accompanying the process. The extent of this linear correlation is generally unknown, even to the order of magnitude. The idea of linearity is also found in the formal mathematics of coupled transport phenomena, e.g., chemical diffusion, thermal diffusion, thermoelectricity, and so forth. The linear array of forces and fluxes which leads to various main and cross coefficients is predicated upon linearity between reaction rates and the bulk thermodynamics which govern the process. The general case in reaction kinetics is well-known: the magnitude of the free-energy change does not cor- relate with observed reaction kinetics, irrespective of whether the process occurs by diffusion or chemical reaction or both. The real need is to investigate specific reaction paths near equilibrium in order to learn of the limitations in attempting to correlate reaction rates and thermodynamics. It is the main purpose of this paper to examine the dissociation kinetics of cupric oxide under conditions of known driving force where the dissociation process is likely to occur by chemical reaction. A secondary objective is to obtain equilibrium data for the CuO-Cu20-O2 system. In a prior paper Edmiston and race' investigated reduction kinetics of wustite in H2-H2O gas mixtures. In 1961, a research program started at Columbia into the mechanical aspects of flotation,* and certain ends are now in view. The purpose of this note is to explain these tentative conclusions in the hope of stimulating discussion and eliciting new data, especially industrial data, with which to test the views expressed. The variables presently under consideration are impeller rotational speed, N, volumetric air rate, Q, and impeller diameter, D, the latter being the parameter chosen to designate cell size. THE GRADE AND RECOVERY SURFACES With a given ore, chemical treatment, and flotation machine, both grade, G, and recovery, R, are functions of N and Q. The GNQ and RNQ relationships are best viewed in terms of three-dimensional surfaces (Fig. 1) which are experimentally determinate.2 TO maintain grade at an acceptably high level, it is necessary for N and Q to lie within certain limits, and similarly with recovery. In this paper, the background and performance of some of these tech- niques for fine particles processing are reviewed. A brief sum mary of the problems associated with fine particles in flotation and related processes is presented.

Efficient mining of copper ore at the White Pine mine in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is partially dependent on the rather unique problem of predicting variations and rock types in a barren stratum called the upper sandstone. The pronounced effect which this formation has on the local mining techniques is reflected by the necessity of deciding whether to mine the sandstone along with ore-bearing rock, thus diluting overall ore grade, or, alternatively, leaving the sandstone behind to form the mine roof. THE OREBODY AND MINING TYPES In the mine, the cupriferous zone of the Nonesuch shale is divided into three major portions (Fig. I). Lying conformably on top of the Copper Harbor formation (or "lower sandstone") is the lower part of the orebody, the parting shale. The parting shale is overlain by the upper sandstone. On top of the upper sandstone, the basal portion (8 ft) of the upper shale is quite similar to the parting shale. Both the upper shale and parting shale are divided into a number of smaller stratigraphic units, each having a characteristic copper content, as shown by the histogram of Fig. 1. Other authors have dealt in detail with the stratigraphy and mineralogy of the orebody, so it will suffice here to call attention to the low copper content of the upper sandstone.

THE A1-Mg phase diagram in the composition range from 30 to 60 pct Mg remains uncertain. Four intermetallic compounds are reported in this composition range. All of the published diagrams are in agreement as to the existence of intermediate phases near 37 and 52 pct Mg (Mgl,A1,). Confusion exists, however, as to the number and identity of the intermetallic phases present in the intervening composition range from 37 to 52 pct Mg. Mikheeva and Kurnakovl denote the existence of a phase e near 42 pct Mg. Kawakami," Reiderer? and Laves report a phase near 48 pct Mg. Eickhoff and Vosskuhler, from a critical survey of the literature, composed the diagram shown in Fig. 1, with the exception of the eutectoid horizontal of the e-phase shown at 210°C. RaynorV n a similar survey discounts the existence of the phase proposed by Ka-wakami et al.' at 48 pct Mg and reports a composite diagram similar to that of Eickhoff and Vosskuhler."
