Exploration activities were maintained at a high level throughout 1966. Numerous significant discoveries and developments in which geologists played an important part were announced. Although the complete results of exploration activities carried out during the year by private companies have not been announced, the following are among the more important developments that have been made public knowledge. In the western states, exploration for practically all of the metals continued at a high rate. Substantially increased interest in uranium occurred this year, and it is felt by many that a real boom in the demand for uranium may come about in the near future. The reasons have been the more rapid acceptance of atomic power than had been anticipated, and that uranium producers can now sell their product to private interests and even foreign countries. A tremendous demand for uranium is anticipated by many, and this has rekindled exploration activity. On the Colorado Plateau, in Wyoming, and in the area around Grants, N. M., a number of companies have undertaken uranium exploration programs, among which are Kerr-McGee, Homestake, Anaconda and Utah Construction. A new uranium orebody in Texas was brought into production early in 1966 by Susquehanna Western.

In this paper, major attention is given to misfires in mines where electric multiple shot-firing is the system used. Misfires are sometimes caused by one action or condition and at other times by a combination of two or more. They may be divided into two classes: (1) those caused by workers in the mines, (2) mechanical or manufacturer's causes. The second cause will be discussed first. Misfires Caused by Faulty Detonators The important part of an electric blasting cap, to the user where multiple shot-firing is done, as in the steep-pitch, thiek-vein, anthracite mines, is the bridge wire. In single shot-firing this factor is not apparent, but in mines where multiple firing is done any variation in the resistance of the bridge wire, where full or even rated battery capacity is required, will most likely cause a misfire. The reason for this is obvious. If the resistance in the bridge wires is not the same, some of the detonators will fire because of their greater comparative resistance. Variance in resistance of bridge wires is caused by a slight difference in the diameter of the bridge wire, also by a difference in the composition of the bridge wires. Again, where the bridge wires have become rusted, there will be a variance in resistance. About the year 1922, one of the large coal companies was greatly alarmed by the number of serious and fatal accidents caused by misfires. The general manager issued an order that these accidents must be greatly reduced, and if possible, entirely prevented. The officials at the mines had to determine the various causes of misfires and have them corrected. The rock contractors who use large quantities of 60 to 80 per cent. explosives and do all firing electrically were thoroughly instructed as to the proper methods of doing their work, and closer supervision was given to their work. The manufacturer's representatives stressed the importance of the use of galvanometers; accordingly these were purchased and used. Larger firing lines were installed under the supervision of a demonstrator of the company manufacturing the caps and explosives. Forty-three years ago a record for low cost was made at the Spanish mine, in Nevada county, California. In 22 days of September, 1887, there was mined 2796 tons of ore at a cost of 37.5 cents per ton, of which 32.4 cents was for labor and 5.1 cents for supplies. The mill treated this ore for 23 cents per ton, of which 12.3 cents was for labor and 10.7 cents for supplies. Thus the total operating cost was 60.5 cents per ton. The yield was $1.16 in gold per ton, leaving a profit of 56 cents per ton, or 48 per cent of the yield. The mine was an open-cut in a schist formation on a hillside and the work was done by Chinese laborers that were paid $1.40 per shift. The ore was soft, and could be ground effectively in four Hunting- ton mills, supplemented by silvered amalgamating plates.* The engineer in charge was F. W. Bradley, a student from the University of California. As has been indicated, the conditions were unusually favorable in respect of softness of ore, accessibility to the mill, metallurgic simplicity, with cheap labor and power, but even at that the results were so remark- able as to attract general attention, which, as might be expected, was magnified, for advertising purposes, by the manufacturers of the Huntington mill, the firm of Parke & Lacy, at San Francisco. The rates of sulfurization and desulfurization of calcium aluminate, silicate, and ferrite melts by CO + CO2 + SO2 mixtures at 1550°C are reported. It is shown that for melts 10 to 15 mm deep transport of sulfide ions within the melt controls the rate of sulfur transfer. The rate data from shallow melts, i.e., 1 to 4 mm deep, have been analyzed on the basis of a diffusion or a reaction controlled process and indications are that the both processes may play a part in controlling the rate of sulfur reaction. The rates of desulfurization of silicate XVEACTION equilibria between metals, metal oxides, and gases have received considerable attention in recent years. However, the understanding of and aluminate melts increase with increasing PCO2/PCO ratio in the gas stream, the effect being most marked for aluminate melts. The sulfide equilibrium data obtained from the present work are shown to be in accord with the results of previous studies. It is shown that carbon dioxide has a measurable solubility in silicate, aluminate, and ferrite melts. Consideration is given to the partial equilibria which control the directions and the rates of reactions occurring simultaneously in complex heterogeneous systems. the kinetics of heterogeneous reactions, particularly those occurring at elevated temperatures has not been improved appreciably. Almost all the metallurgical reactions occur in heterogeneous systems involving two or more phases. Although in many authoritative text books and original Papers the basic principles concerning the kinetics of heterogeneous reactions are clearly underlined, they are seldom used to the best advantage in kinetic studies, particularly those involving the metallurgical reac-

The Roan Antelope Copper Mines Ltd. are situated in the north central part of Northern Rhodesia, at an altitude of 4000 ft. and 13" south of the Equator. The town site (Luanshya) is well situated and enjoys among other things a really temperate climate for 10 months of the year. The two spring and summer months, October and November, while hot and humid, do not bring any great discomforts as compared with many other mining camps. Strictly modern brick homes, with electric lights, purified water, telephone and water-borne sewage, add to the comfort of the employees. A rainfall of approximately 60 in. per year furnishes ample water for both industrial and domestic purposes. The rainy season generally begins in October and lasts through until March. As much as 3 to 4 in. is recorded in 24 hr., but this offers no difficulties because the runoff is very rapid. The property is connected by a 24-mile branch line from Ndola with the main line of the Beira-Mashonaland and Rhodesia Railways Ltd. Practically all supplies from overseas are transported over this line from Beira, 1743 miles distant on the east coast in Portuguese East Africa. The mine output also leaves Africa from this port. Passenger service is principally via Cape Town or Durban, a distance of about 2100 miles to either port. The Imperial Airways maintain a service from Cape Town to Croydon, taking 9 days for the trip. Connections can be made with this service at Broken Hill, 150 miles south of Luanshya, by either rail or automobile. Thus, after several days of travel through virgin bush, a visitor arrives at a typically modern town site in the heart of Africa. Every development in mining, milling and smelting practice is used to advantage. (written discussion ?).-The two papers on coal-mine costs and pride fixing that Mr. Norris has contributed to the Transactions possess as much general interest and are of as much value to the coal-mining industry as any papers that have been presented in recent years. Until recently one of the troubles with the coal business, and especially the bituminous branch of it, has been that because of the lack of a uniform system of cost accounting (many operators, I regret to say, not having had any system at all), the industry as a whole may be said not to have known where it was at. The system adopted by the Federal Trade Commission may not be absolutely perfect but it has accomplished something in that it has compelled a uniform method of reporting and tabulating costs giving results of these compilations which are comparable. The Institute and the coal-mining industry owe a vote of thanks to, and of confidence in, Mr. Norris and his two associates on the Engineers Committee of the Fuel Administration, Messrs. Garnsey and Allport, for the great work they have done in interpreting the results compiled by the Federal Trade Commission, not to speak of the personal sacrifices made by them in giving their services to the government. Those who have read Mr. Norris' paper will probably join me in wishing he had brought out a little more fully the real meaning of the charts so far as they indicate the difference between the cost of producing a ton of anthracite and the price the operators receive for their product. Mr. Norris could have done this more satisfactorily than anyone else. It seems to me that particular attention should be drawn to the fact that, according to these charts, and the tables accompanying them, not less than 25 per cent. of the total output of anthracite, whether "company" or "individual," during the period covered by Mr. Norris' paper,

Relatively few data have been collected on the rates of diffusion in ternary solid solution systems. In general it does not seem worth while to gather extensive data for such systems until the factors that determine the rates of diffusion in binary systems are better understood. But the rates of diffusion in a ternary system of limited solid solubility, in which the terminal solid solution is in equilibrium with an intermediate phase and may thus be represented as a quasibinary system, represents a case of special interest. In this case, where by reason of the association of the two solute metals in an intermediate phase a special attraction of the two solute atoms may be safely assumed, some interaction of these atoms during simultaneous diffusion in the solvent lattice might be expected. It has frequently been proposed that molecular solid solutions exist in quasibinary and in other ternary (and binary) solid solutions. There is no direct evidence for such solid solutions; arguments based upon the supposed anomaly in certain physical properties1 are hardly important; unexpected density relationships have proved deceptive;2 suggestions of molecular solid solutions have been made on the basis of solution laws in their application to certain systems, but without result;3 attempts to find lattice parameters in the solid solution Al-MgZnz, which cannot be calculated from the separate effects of magnesium and zinc and might therefore be taken as evidence for a molecular aggregation, have given negative results.* Fundamentally, methods for the determination of the state of molecular aggregation in solution depend upon the kinetic behavior of the particles constituting the system. If it could be shown that the two solutes in a quasibinary ternary system diffuse in molecular proportions, despite a radical difference in the separate rates of diffusion of each solute when diffusing alone in the solvent lattice, some basis for the concept of molecular solid solution would be afforded. A series of wedges of 1020 steel (2 1/2 by 6 by 8 in.) were explosively loaded, as shown in Fig. 1. A slab of explosive on the surface of the steel wedge was initiated simultaneously along one edge, producing an essentially two-dimensional oblique shock in the metal. Pressure and density in the metal were measured as a function of distance from the explosive-metal interface by a method described elsewhere.' While for pressures below 130 .kbars the technique produces accurate results, for greater pressures the presence of two shock waves in the metalzy3 makes interpretation of the data uncertain. However, the location of the transition in pressure at 130 kbars can be readily identified from the data. The assumption of a single shock in the region above 130 kbars overestimates the pressure computed on a multiple-shock model. After firing, the wedges were sectioned, lapped, and etched with 2 pct Nital. A photograph of an etched specimen is shown in Fig. 2. The specimens were examined metallographically. The dark region, at the top of the specimen, was heavily banded, Fig. 3, while the lighter area was comparatively free from banding, Fig. 4, the boundary between the two regions being quite abrupt. The very light regions at an angle of about 45 deg to the explosive-metal interface show virtually no banding. The origin of these light regions, which are not Luder's bands, is not yet explained. The thickness of the heavily banded area was measured and compared with the pressure at the boundary between the heavily and lightly banded regions. The Black hills rise like a dark island above the far-flung prairie lands of the Dakotas; to their sombre pine-clad slopes they owe the name, Black mountains, by which they were known to the early explorers. Pahasapa, a Sioux word with the same meaning, was the name given to these hills by the Indians, who avoided them, believing them to be mysterious and dangerous. The aborigines entered the hills rarely, to pick berries, hunt the deer, or to cut lodge-poles, the central supports of their huts. The French explorer Pierre de la Veréndrye reached Dakotan soil in October 1738, coming thither from Montreal by way of Lake Superior and the Lake of the Woods.* Five years later his sons, François and Louis Joseph, reached the Black hills, as is recorded on a plate unearthed at Fort Pierre in 1913. The French-Canadian explorers and trappers of that time, however, appear to have been diverted southeastward to the more promising lands of the Mississippi valley, so that we find no mention of the Black hills in the chronicles of the period until Lewis and Clark, on their way to the Pacific coast, in 1805, met a French trader, named Jean Vallé, on the lower Cheyenne river, and from him they heard of the Black mountains in a casual manner. Next, Wilson P. Hunt, who, at the head of an expedition crossed the Rocky Mountains on his way to the Astor trading-post on the Columbia river, in 1811, had a glimpse of the dark hills to the north, but that was all. Then in 1823 Jedediah S. Smith, one of the earliest discoverers of gold in California, crossed the southern part of the Black hills on his way westward. Two trading-posts were established in

1 1.4-1. Source of Water. Precipitation in the form of rain or snow is the original source of water that enters most surface mines. The precipitation, which does not escape to the atmosphere, either becomes surface run- off or infiltrates into the ground to become ground water (3,4). Evaporation and surface run-off can be measured. The water that infiltrates the ground disappears from view and is more difficult to evaluate. In general, it moves in a pattern similar to the surface run-off, but at a much slower rate, since its progress is impeded by many subsurface conditions. The infiltrating water descends through the soil and rock by whatever passageways permit flow until the water table or top of the zone of saturation is reached. Though usually pictured as a level surface, it is dependent upon the topography and the permeability of the enclosing material, and therefore it can be as erratic and unpredictable as the subsurface geology. Ground water may become surface run-off again at a lower point, and likewise, surface run-off of lakes and streams can infiltrate to become ground water. Should the ground water be confined to a permeable zone overlain by an impermeable barrier, a pressure is created. Such water is said to be artesian if the pressure head is sufficient to raise the confined water to the surface. These conditions are more commonly found in relatively flat-lying bedded formations. 11.4-2. Recognition and Estimation of Water. Dewatering and flood control should be considered by the design engineer at an early stage in all surface mine planning. Recognition of the possible problems, and making allowance for their solution, is an inexpensive precaution. Circumstances which should lead to investigation are: 1. High rainfall 2. Experience of other mines in the area 3. Evidence of water and caving in drill holes 4. Presence of springs and artesian wells 5. Geological evidence of aquifers.

The following notes are descriptive of a country as yet in its infancy as regards the advancement made in mining operations. Its inaccessibility and other militating circumstances have retarded progress in that direction. With the completion of the railroad, now under construction, having the city of Cali as its objective point, with the concomitant civilizing and developing consequences, it is certain that the slopes of the Cordilleras will prove to be a South American Eldorado. Deposits of coal, copper, and minerals other than those of the precious metals are known to exist in quantities which, under more favorable conditions of accessibility, etc., could be profitably mined. The Government of the United States of Colombia, I think, is disposed to encourage and foster mining enterprises. Articles designed for mining are admitted free of duty; the permanency of the government is, at least, as well assured as that of Mexico (which is not noted for its immutability), and a more sincerely friendly sentitment towards Americans prevails in the United States of Colombia than in Mexico. This paper is confined to a description of the property of the Cauca company's mines, and is intended rather as a preliminary notice than as an exhaustive report. The Cauca mining district is reached by the following route: New York to Aspinwall; to Panama; to Buenaventura, a port on the west coast of the United States of Colombia, distant thirty-six hours from Panama by steamer; to Cali in the State of Cauca. The State of Cauca is bounded on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, on the northwest by the State of Panama, on the northeast by the States of Bolivar and Antioquia, on the east by Brazil and Venzuela, on the south by the Republic of Ecuador, and on the west by the Pacific. Ocean. It has a territory of 41,443 square miles, which is about one-tenth of the entire territory of the United States of Colombia. Its population, including the 50,000 savage Indians of the Caqueta (some of whom are cannibals), is nearly 450,000 souls, or about one-sixth of the population of the Colombian republic. Not so many years ago the interest of the average mining engineer in money matters-aside from his pay check or his consulting fees-was confined to the per-ton cost of mining and beneficiating ore and to the amount of capital that would be required to erect the plant necessary to carry out such operations on a prescribed scale. The so-called "business men" assumed that questions of marketing the products, of profits, and of dividends were in their exclusive sphere-matters too intricate or, perhaps, too practical for the mere engineer! In the case of a new enterprise, the promoter shouldered the entire responsibility for raising the necessary funds, and incidentally he got the lion's share of profits. In fact, he frequently profited handsomely even though the mine earned little or nothing. Occasionally the engineer turned promoter or entrepreneur--conspicuous examples are Herbert Hoover, D. C. Jackling, William Braden and F. W. Bradley- but by and large he remained in a sphere of his own. To what extent this condition of affairs has changed is difficult to say. Experiments on Al-4.5 pct Cu alloy shou the dendrite arnz spacing increases with time during isothermal holding in the liquid-solid region. This coarsening of the dendrite structure is then shown to occur at roughly the same rate during solidification as during isothermal holding. Final dendrite arm spacing in both types of experiments depends primarily on coarsening kinetics. It is concluded that driving force for the coarsening is reduction of liquid-solid sur/ace area. Calculations based on two simple models show qualitative apreement with experinzent. 1 HERE has been considerable interest in recent years in determining effects of solidification variables on dendrite arm spacing in cast alloys. The interest has resulted primarily from the clear evidence that 1) the degree of homogeneity which can be obtained in a cast alloy with commercially practical homogeni- zation treatments depends on dendrite arm spacing, and 2) mechanical properties of the heat-treated casting depend on the homogeneity obtained.'-' In wrought alloys, microsegregation from the original ingot is carried to some extent into the final wrought product, and affects mechanical properties in similar fashion Experimental evidence available indicates that dendrite arm spacing in cast aluminum alloys is influenced only by cooling rate (or "local solidification timev*) and alloy content.Fig. 1, for example,

The permeability of an oil or gas sand is its capacity for transmitting fluids, either liquids or gases, under pressure. The permeability of a sand depends upon the size and shape of the openings in it and the extent to which these communicate with one another, as well as upon the ratio of their volume to the total volume of the sand. The apparatus employed and the method of procedure used by the authors in conducting the permeability tests have been described in a previous pub1ication.l For the tests described here 1/2-in. cubes were used. They were set in the lower end of a 1-in. union, inserted in a square hole cut in a hard rubber stopper which fitted into the lower end of the union. In the tests with air, volumes were measured with a wet American gas meter of 100 cu. ft. capacity. In those with water, distilled water at room temperature was employed, unless otherwise noted. DescRiption of Sands Tested The tests described in this paper were performed upon 18 samples representing typical oil and gas sands from 7 localities in northwestern Pennsylvania. For purposes of identification, the cores from which the samples came have been designated by capital letters, the sequence of the samples in the cores by numerals, and the individual cubes by small letters. All cubes from the same samples came from adjacent portions parallel to the bedding. Core A of the Bradford sand came from the north central part of the Bradford field, from an area where water-flooding operations have proved highly successful. Core B of the same sand was obtained from the southern part of the field. This core contained a so-called "loose streak," 7.5 ft. thick, in the middle portion of which B2 is a representative sample. The "loose streak" has given trouble in water-flooding but responded favorably to an air-drive, using a pressure of 300 lb. In discussing the petroleum products situation the first thing that comes to mind is "what is happening to gasoline." Is the consumption increasing? How is the export market? What about imports? Are stocks on hand too high? Have we produced too much? This paper will attempt to answer these questions. Consumption of gasoline (motor fuel) in the United States in spite of the depression and the chaotic conditions of many industries has increased during 1931 about 2 per cent over 1930. This favorable factor was offset by a severe contraction in exports, which fell off about 30 per cent from 1930. This drop in exports was so large that very little more export business was done than in 1926 or 1927. Taking all demand combined, there was a decrease from the peak year of 1930 of nearly 11,000,000 bbl., amounting to slightly over 2 per cent. The units of the industry, though, should have expected some decrease and governed themselves accordingly. Let us see what they did. They reduced imports over 3,000,000 bbl., which helped. Production was cut 3,000,000 bbl., but this was not enough, so that stocks increased 1,800,000 bbl. whereas during the previous year stocks were reduced 2,500,000 bbl. It is apparent, therefore, that something was done to keep the industry in balance in regard to gasoline, but not enough. If the year had ended on Sept. 30, we could have said that production had been cut 19,000,000 bbl. and stocks had been reduced from the previous year, but the excessive production during the last three months of the year changed everything. It is a strange thing and worthy of note that the price of gasoline fell to its lowest levels when apparently the greatest improvement was being made, and that during the last quarter of the year prices started to improve, when, in spite of an improvement in total demand which approximated 1930, an excessive production caused an uneconomic condition to set in. Stocks on hand on Dec. 31 were unquestionably too high, possibly 10,000,000 bbl. more than was needed for a strong condition to obtain. CHEAP power is essential to large-scale mining and metallurgical operations, particularly where fine grinding of large tonnages has to be resorted to, as is the case with an increasing number of. mines treating disseminated copper ores, or low-grade gold ores, in the grinding of which considerable power is consumed. A comparison of the cost of generating power with Diesel engines and steam turbines and a brief discussion of the different factors governing the profitable use of either type of prime mover may be timely in view of the importance of. a cheap supply of power to the mining industry, and the prominence that has lately been given to Diesel engines in America. As many of our most important mines and largest producers of metals are located in sections where neither cheap coal nor water power is available, and the price of oil fuel is increased by long hauls, the Diesel. engine will. become a prime mover of increasing importance. This applies particularly to the Southwestern States, where an ample supply of cold water for condensing purposes is unusual and local climatological conditions interfere in securing the high vacua essential to high turbine efficiency. About 12 times as much water will be required for condensing purposes with steam turbines under general conditions as is needed for jacket-cooling of two-stroke, cycle Diesel engine; four-stroke cycle Diesel engines require only one-twentieth of the cooling water. Another condition favoring the use of Diesel engines is the high load factor at which most mine power plants operate. The influence of load factor on the cost of generating power is shown in Tables 1 and 2 and in Fig. 1.

THIS communication reports film-recorded low-energy (-100 kev) proton blocking patterns'-3 for hcp and wurtzite crystals. In particular the sequence of relative line intensities* (corresponding to planar blocking) of common hcp metals is compared with those of the wurtzite semiconductors CdS and CdSe. The results show that the sequence is characteristic of structure. For closely similar structures such as those of CdS and CdSe, differences of line intensity attributable to the difference in atomic number, 2, of the scattering centers may also be seen. The apparatus and techniques used in this work were identical with those reported previously in a study of cubic systems.3 All metals were given standard metal-lographic etches, and the semiconductors cleaved, immediately prior to introduction to the vacuum system. Fig. 1 shows the unit cell of the wurtzite structure, and the geometry used to obtain the [1120] and [0001] patterns of Fig. 2. The axial ratio, c/a, for all ma- terials of Fig. 2 is close to 1.63. The patterns are then directly comparable in linear dimensions inasmuch as they have been reproduced at the same overall magnification of the patterns. (Overall magnification is proportional to the product of film-to-target distance and printing magnification. The events which led to computer control of the grinding circuit at Brenda Mines are described, beginning with mill operating philosophy. High production rates are encouraged so that, despite severe upstream disturbances, a manual control method to meet this philosophy had developed. Unfortunately, due to the time interval between manual control adjustments, losses in production resulted. An analog control method was devised and, although superior to manual control in some situations, was found to suffer from several practical limitations. The data logging capabilities of a control computer seemed warranted. Circuit testwork combined with an analysis of operating data showed that (1) metallurgical personnel at times could increase production rates by as much as 10% over that achieved by grinding operators; (2) the chosen data base required an increase of 2% or more to be statistically significant; and (3) for a 2% increase there would be a significant rate of return of investment in computer installation. Consequently one grinding circuit was fully instrumented, and a rented computer was installed by Brenda personnel. Prior to installation, Brenda metallurgical and instrumentation personnel were trained in the use of the computer. An experimental program was devised with short and long-term objectives. The short-term objective was to develop a practical control strategy which would yield immediate production improvement. This goal has been successfully met as described in this paper. Statistically significant increases in excess of 2% have been established. Work is being completed for the permanent installation of computer control on all four grinding circuits at the present time. Long-term objectives are (1) off-line analysis of the circuit using mathematical models of process units; (2) on-line experiments to study alternative control tactics; and (3) possible expansion of computer facilities to the crushing plant.

In some research work carried out by the writer, certain results have been obtained which bear on the fundamental nature and origin of coal and the relationship between coal and petroleum. Without entering into a discussion of the details of the experiments, which were conducted on petroleum and derived bitumens, there are given here, by way of definition, some of the relations that the writer has established between certain classes of bitumens of petroliferous origin. Bitumen.—-A natural organic substance, gaseous, liquid, or solid, consisting of hydrocarbons and the oxy-or thionic derivatives of the same, or of a mixture of all three. Diaspha1tenes.—-Those portions of bitumens that are soluble in ether or carbon disulfide, but are insoluble in a mixture of equal parts of ether and alcohol. Diasphaltenes are produced by the oxidation or thionization of petroleum oils; they have, as the name indicates, twice the molecular weight of asphaltenes, into which they are converted when subjected to moderate temperature. For example, an artificially produced diasphaltene, which was readily soluble in pentane and ether, was quite insoluble in either of these solvents after heating for three weeks at a temperature of 100" C., and was converted into an insoluble asphaltene. Aspha1tenes.—Those portions of bitumen that are insoluble in ether or ether alcohol but are soluble in carbon disulfide. Aspha1tites.—Those solid or semisolid natural bitumens that are composed, for the most part, of asphaltenes or diasphaltenes. A pure asphaltitel would be composed wholly of asphaltenes and diasphaltenes, but most asphaltites contain small percentages of oil and wax, which have not yet been converted into asphaltenes; they may also contain A small percent.age of kerotenes, which represent the next stage of the metamorphosis of asphaltenes. Among the naturally occurring oxyasphaltites may be mentioned grahamite; and among the thioasphaltites, gilsonite.

The paper presents background information, a description of mine characteristics that affect air monitoring techniques, and a review of Portable measurement techniques and instruments for gas and particulate matter sampling. A general review of the laboratory and field research being conducted at Michigan Technological University in the area of diesel emissions is presented. The facilities involved with this research are also described. These are the experimental mine, the diesel dilution tunnel test cell, the mine air monitoring lab (MAML), portable instruments, and the production mines used.
