Amongst those whose task it is to design tumbling mills and other comminution machines there is an almost religious divide between devotees of the Bond method and devotees of other methods developed in more recent times. For a decade or so the issue was between the Bond power-based methods and the JKMRC (JK) simulation based approach. The newest method to challenge the status quo is power-based and was developed by Steve Morrell. As the title suggests, this paper will take some liberty at concluding that Fred Bond and Steve Morrell may be separated by history, but not by their approaches to their individual contributions to the science of comminution. Another driver for the paper is that although it is good to have diversity of thought, the existing divisions are problematic for those of us signing public disclosure documents. If alternative design methods produce materially different outcomes for the mill duty, then at least one of them is wrong or being used incorrectly. At some point the unsustainable argument may need to be put in a court of law that we metallurgists have two or more materially different design methods, each of which is correct! Therefore, perhaps a resolution is needed before this occurs?The works of both Fred Bond and Steve Morrell are each directly related to their contemporary grinding mill design and operational environments. Both their approaches are empirical, borne of observing and measuring real world situations. Both worked with theories that preceded them, gathered their own data and then each saw shortfalls in the status quo.Fred Bond was an escapee from revolution, a victim of The Great Depression, and had several near death experiences during his early site-based career. Perhaps he was fortuitously rescued from himself when asked by Allis Chalmers (A-C) to set up its rock testing laboratory in Milwaukie in 1930. Fred’s testing led him to conclude that neither the Kick nor the Von Rittinger theories explained his measurements. His writings on the failings of these old theories caused a divide between devotees of the old and new methods at that time. After many years, and much thought and plotting of data (the old way!), he came up with his now-famous equations (and his Third Theory) which have stood the test of time, certainly in the world of Bond-era machines.Coming from England via several African diamond mines, Steve Morrell immersed himself into the comminution world of the JK in Brisbane about a decade after Fred passed on. The JK had developed its semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) simulation framework using its own pendulum breakage tester, itself a derivative of the twin pendulum impact device invented by Bond decades earlier. At the JK Steve developed his authoritative Tumbling Mill Power equations and was involved in real world analysis of comminution problems on the global stage. Steve’s JK experience coincided with the demise of the rod mill, the rise of autogenous grinding (AG) and SAG milling and a rapid expansion in concentrator capacity.Morrell left the JK to pursue his own interests, which included ongoing consulting work, now demanded by the comminution world. He then turned to investigating a growing list of discrepancies between the opinions of designers and theoreticians, and the factual outcomes. The Morrell Method of design arose from this re-examination of ore testing, real world operating data and these glaring and expensive discrepancies between design and outcome. A vast majority of the operating longwall sections use shield-type face supports to provide ground control in the United States. As a co-operative research program between the University of Alabama (UA) and Jim Walter Resources, Inc.(JWR), a joint research program is underway to study interaction of shields with surrounding rock masses. A series of analyses on the response of shields are performed using monitored data at a longwall face in a deep coal mine. In this paper, various effects of parameters, such as leg pressure, setting load, developing load, maximum loading rate, pressure in capsule, and convergence between canopy and base, are discussed and recommended as stability indices. A microcomputer program is being developed for instantaneous interpretation of the shield monitored data, and for giving warnings of potential problems. The preliminary results define the effects of the setting load, developing load, and rate of developing load or leg closure rate. The objective of the study is to understand the shield characteristics and their interaction with surrounding strata in real time, then develop a reliable program for maintaining longwall stability.

Pillar mining methods at the Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations are not new. Since mining commenced on Pasminco's leases at the turn of the century virtually every pillar extraction method tried throughout the world has been used. Much of the remaining mineral resource in the Pasminco Broken Hill leases is contained in pillars.However, due to the on-going need for mechanisation with bulk mining methods, and the very peculiar physical circumstances surrounding the formation of these pillars, their exploitation requires the development of a virtually new method based on excavation technology not previously used in the Australian mining industry. Trials of the method are to take place at the southern operations during 1991.

The Great lady gold deposit presented the challenge of providing a new grade control system for an usual type of orebody in the Eastern Goldfields. Mineralisation occurs as secondary enrichment about a quartz sand - granite saprolite contact 30m below surface. The ore horizon, which averaged 2.5m thickness, was near-horizontally disposed in contrast to the typical steeply dipping, shear hosted deposits of the region. A trial mining operation was undertaken on the richest, most continuous portion of the deposit to test the economic viability of this type of orebody. Controlling and minimising vertical ore dilution was considered crucial to the profitability of the operation.An understanding of the grade distribution combined with the practicalities of mining produced a grade control system which allowed for the mining of 1/2rn composited grades on level lm benches. Ore mining was combined with strict monitoring of levels, truck destinations and ore boundaries. Ore reconciliation results showed this system to be effective.

An 8 ha trial landform was constructed in late 2009 at the Ranger Uranium Mine, located 250 km east of Darwin in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics of northern Australia. The objective of the trial, which comprises two surface cover types on a uniform two per cent slope, is to provide long-term data to guide the development by Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) of its landform closure strategy. The scope of the work program for the landform includes many aspects; however, this paper is focusing on run-off and erosion rates. The run-off and erosion rates are used to assess the long-term geomorphic stability by comparing measured with modelled export rates from a landform evolution model.Monitoring of wet season run-off is undertaken collaboratively by the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (ERISS) and ERA, on four purpose-instrumented 30 m by 30 m erosion plots. Continuous measurements are made in rectangular broad crested (RBC) flumes located at the outflow of each plot, of water level, turbidity (a surrogate for fine suspended sediment) and electrical conductivity (EC) (a surrogate for solutes). Each plot has a tipping bucket pluviometer located near the RBC flume. Bed load is collected monthly.This paper reports the findings of rainfall and bed load from the first two wet seasons (2009 - 2010 and 2010 - 2011) following construction. The field measured loads will be compared with the predictions made by the Cellular Automaton Evolutionary Slope and River (CAESAR) landform evolution model. Initial results indicate that predicted rates of sediment export from the CAESAR model are similar to measured export rates. This provides confidence in the capability of the model to predict stability of the future rehabilitated mine area, especially during the critical initial years following construction. The Australian coal industry has undergone sevenfold growth over the last 30 years and since 1985 has been the world's largest coal exporter. Three quarters of Australia's coal production is exported so its future is dependent on it remaining internationally competitive with other energy sources and other coal exporting countries. Coal is likely to increase its share of the energy market during the nine- ties as oil prices increase, new coal-fired capacity is commissioned and some form of nuclear energy is developed which is of acceptable safety standards to the community for use in the 21st century. Gas may take a part of coal's anticipated market share by the Year 2000. While coal exports will increase from China, Colombia, Indonesia and Venezuela and satisfy some of this additional coal demand Australia will also expand its export production, due to its existing advantages. The United States, Canada, South Africa, Poland and USSR seem unlikely to enjoy the same degrees of expansion and some, particularly Poland and USSR, will decline. Australia will always find it difficult to compete in the more distant markets due to levels of ocean freight, although its high quality coals will tend to partly offset such disadvantage.

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is an underground sublevel caving mine located in north-west Queensland with a production rate of 6.4 Mt/a. The mine has sublevels spaced with a 25 m vertical interval. The production process on each level starts with the drilling and firing of a blind uphole rise to start the slot extraction. These rises are fired as a single shot and routinely need to achieve a design height of 22 m to 30 m depending on the local mine geometry. If the rise fails to perform as designed then the production phase of the level is delayed with significant rework required to remedy the situation.This paper describes the process that the EHM team has followed to improve the first time performance of each rise. The improvement process commenced with a review of results from previous rises and resulted in the identification of a number of improvement opportunities. A revised holistic approach was established for the process, which included involvement from operators and engineers. Through continued measurement and review of rise performance, inputs to the process were improved to a point where reliable results can now be expected. The successful performance of subsequent rises has been verified through a comprehensive quality assurance quality control (QA/QC) program. Before quality control processes were implemented, the success rate of blind uphole rises was only 11 per cent (one out of nine rises) at EHM. In comparison, the success rates have been vastly improved to 25 per cent (one out of four) and 75 per cent (three out of four) respectively following two stages of improvements. It is shown that coke has a major influence on the pattern of operation and on the aerodynamics of the blast furnace and that the physical and chemical characteristics of coke, at each stage in the furnace, determine its ability to satisfy requirements for iron production and coke economy. Analysis of coke sampled from operating furnaces is compared with furnace behaviour. The available data suggests the importance of segregation, strength, size change and chemical degradation of coke on furnace performance. Correlations are presented for coke breakdown ratio as a function of coke rate and hearth diameter which shows that breakdown increases with hearth diameter and with decreasing coke rate. It is also shown that the Micum tests do not reflect the coke strength in a predictable way and that solution reactions appear to play an important role in giving rise to a pitting effect on the cell walls of the coke with the resultant deterioration in coke properties. The catalytic effect of activating substances, such as alkalis, is noted and results are presented which show the effect of carbon solution on the coke strength. The importance of coke in the stack and in the bosh is discussed and flooding results are presented for BSC furnaces which show the probable driving limits for the furnaces considered. It is also shown that coke sampled from different tuyeres in a furnace gives quite different flooding limits. Other applications of the coke test work at BSC are also noted and the relevant objectives listed.

"Determining the deportment of economic and environmentally significant elements in sulfidic mine materials (eg ore, gangue and waste) requires the use of advanced microanalytical techniques, including electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). Sulfidic boulders were sampled from an acid rock drainage impacted ephemeral stream adjacent to historical copper-silver workings at Baal Gammon, northern Queensland. The abundance and deportment of a range of trace elements and precious metals were analysed in these samples. Whilst many of these elements represent a potential environmental risk if leached from sulfidic rocks into streams in the surficial environment, significantly some of these elements (eg In, Sb and Co) represent specialised metals that are currently considered to be in critical supply.Sulfidic waste rock material at Baal Gammon is dominated by chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. Microanalytical investigations revealed that chalcopyrite contains significant quantities of In, Sn, Ag and Zn either substituted directly into the crystal lattice or occurring as discrete sphalerite and stannite inclusions. Arsenopyrite, which may comprise more than 50 per cent of some boulders, is notably enriched in Sb, Co and Ni but also contains inclusions of sphalerite, chalcopyrite and stannite. In contrast, pyrrhotite contains no trace elements of economic significance, but instead represents a likely contributor to acid generation during oxidation in the surficial environment. Trace metals (eg In, Sb, Co, Ni, Zn) are liberated during sulfide oxidation of these boulders in the surficial environment, generating a metal-rich, low-pH leachate.Fe-oxides precipitated as rinds on the surface of these boulders under low pH conditions also contain abundant As, Bi, Sn, Cu and Zn. Abandoned or historical mines represent potential sources of metalliferous drainage that poses potential environmental risks to water and habitats. However, sulfide-rich historical waste rock, stockpiles and processed waste (eg tailings) at abandoned mines may also represent significant sources of critical (eg indium) or other significant metals (eg Sn) that if liberated economically could improve environmental conditions in and around abandoned and historical mines.CITATION:Fox, N, Parbhakar-Fox, A and Lottermoser, B G, 2016. Commencing with early experiences in iron ore beneficiation made at Beeshoek Mine, the paper follows through the process of extensive mineralogical and metallurgical investigations carried out during feasibility study. The paper will discuss the design process and logic followed over the last years, the challenges and decisions the design team faced in order to draw the conclusions that ultimately resulted in today’s value add approach at Assmang’s Khumani Operations.As integral part of the benefi ciation concept, a focus is set on the jigs, explaining the plant concepts, planned expansions and their contribution to the overall value add approach at the mine.The case study is intended to describe the outcomes of the design versus the actual achieved and the further value add projects to be implemented. As for future prospect, the incorporation of Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS) demonstrates Assmang Khumani’s pursuit to maximise productivity and overall recovery.DMS was evaluated as an alternative to jigging within a comparative test work study, but in conclusion the option had to be excluded due to its inability to achieve the high density cut point required to achieve the sales specifi cations. In contrast, the investigation on producing an additional middlings fraction on the lumpy ore jigs prove to be an adequate option for further improvements of overall mass yield. With further liberation, a saleable product will be achieved by secondary beneficiation on Fines Jigs and WHIMS.Concluding, jigs are considered the most viable and cost effective benefi ciation process for off-grade ore +0.8 - 32 mm at Beeshoek as well as at Khumani, while WHIMS is the process under consideration for super fines recovery.

"The Syama Gold Mine, located in southern Mali, was established in 1990 by Broken Hill Propriety Limited (BHP). The operation began treating oxide, and in 1994 it transitioned to processing hard and refractory ore based on ‘whole-of-ore’ roasting. In 1996, BHP was succeeded by Randgold Resources and the operation ran until 2001, when it was placed into care and maintenance.The Syama ore is classified as a double refractory ore with pyrite occluding the fine grained gold present in the ore and high levels of organic carbon presenting a challenge in terms of preg-robbing behaviour. The ore is extremely competent and this combination of metallurgical features was the main source of metallurgical problems encountered by the previous owners.Resolute Mining Limited (RML) acquired the Syama project in 2004. Following a feasibility study and the development of a revised processing flow sheet the plant was recommissioned in 2008 using a combination of old and new equipment. The revised flow sheet enabled primary sulfide ore to be treated by flotation and roasting of the concentrate to produce a calcine suitable for conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing.Commissioning and ramp up of the plant was a troubled process, with monthly gold production being as low as 3000 oz in 2010. Poor availability of equipment and lower-than-forecast recoveries were the primary contributors.During the last five years, RML has utilised a systematic approach to improve production, focusing on mechanical reliability, metallurgical recovery and process bottlenecks. Modifications to the circuit have been as a result of both innovation and the application of technological improvements. Improvements have been made to the flotation, roasting and CIL circuits and RML has introduced a deslime circuit to treat flotation concentrate, in addition to the very successful commissioning of a new 1 Mt/a oxide circuit in December 2014. These changes have resulted in gold production increasing to more than 20 000 oz per month in 2015.This paper presents the processes, change implementation and outcomes of the modifications made to the sulfide circuit to address the availability and recovery problems.Apart from the expansion of an existing, world-class deposit and discovery of new resources, future improvements on the path to a class-leading gold mine include the continued reduction of the unit cash cost, increase in overall sulfide circuit gold recovery, increased throughput through continued innovation and consistency in the plant’s operation.Citation:Sinclair, R, Hunter, I and Landwehr, D, 2016. This paper is based on an evaluation project engaged upon jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited nnd" IBM Austra]ia Limited. Mount Isa Mines Limited produces most of its copper from large underground open stopes within massive orebodies. Variations in the position and shapes of these stopes can result in improved metal recovery. An interactive graphics system has been developed to assist the mine design engineer optimise his design. The system can assist the engineer throughout the orebody visualis- ation, initial design and optimisation phases of his design. At any stage the engineer may call upon the display of gridded mesh data, digitized ore outlines or existing stopes or development (drives, cross-cuts). This information may be viewed in plan or any vertical section or in three dimensions with rotation. Tonnage and grade calculations may be quickly performed for initial stope outlines or for modifications to them during the optimisation phase. The system design is highly modular. An array of functions for the manipulation of coordinate and line information may be linked with the development or stope design functions in whichever way the designer desires.

Mine projects are complex opportunities that demand a constant assessment of uncertainty, ie risk and upside potential. This is because the value of a mine project is typically influenced by many underlying economic and physical uncertainties, such as metal/mineral prices, metal/mineral grades, costs, schedules, quantities, and environmental issues, amongst others, which are not known with much certainty at the beginning of the project. But, is uncertainty an enemy or an ally of the mine planner/analyst? To answer this question, this paper first assesses and elaborates upon the general concept of uncertainty. It then looks at the different sources of uncertainty in a mining project, such as the orebody, costs and product price uncertainties, and their effect on the final project value. Next, a general?review?of current mine evaluation techniques highlighting their limitations when dealing with uncertainty is made. Finally, an extended evaluation and risk management framework that addresses the existing uncertainty in the (greenfield/brownfield) mine evaluation process is proposed. One important characteristic of this framework is that it uses and manages uncertainty in order to generate additional value to the project; this is done through operational and managerial flexibility, which allow mine planners to minimise/maximise project risk/upside-potential giving a more realistic estimate of the projectÆs market value - this is shown in practical and simple examples occurring at different stages of a mine project, such as exploration and operation. The Iron Ore Company (IOC) of Canada Mining and Operations Departments expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1 m × 1 m × 1 m) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment, and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine and to date has significantly improved upon baseline measures.One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion into the blastholes provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduced the infi ltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rock mass. Blast results showed reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muck piles. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realised.To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used shovel based camera technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A digital vision system (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with global positioning system (GPS) locations. A large population of digital images was analysed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the æAMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and ReconciliationÆ project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called æthe propagation of errorÆ.

The 3.5 million tones per annum Enterprise mine is the newest underground copper mine at Mount Isa in northern Australia. At a depth of up to 2000 metres, it is the hottest and deepest mine in Australia. In situ rock temperatures sometimes exceed 60¦C requiring the installation of substantial amount of refrigeration to provide safe working conditions for mine workers. The latest refrigeration project at the mine, R67, required the design and installation of the worldÆs largest bulk air cooler and AustraliaÆs largest chilled water plant. The plant is mounted on the surface of the mine and provides 25 MW of refrigeration to cool some 580 kg/sec of ambient air to 11.4¦C. This is equivalent to the production of 6300 tonnes of ice per day. The plant was designed for high availability, as any downtime would result in substantial production losses to MIM, and also had the potential to quickly result in unsafe levels of heat stress within the underground workplaces. The bulk air cooler has been designed for a capacity of 34 MW(R), the expected ultimate carrying capacity of the 7 m vertical intake shaft. Being located well inside the tropics, technical issues such as control of thermal pulldown required special consideration. Also, the bulk air cooler had to be designed to handle whatever demand for fresh air was imposed by the mine below, with over 100 per cent variations in airflow expected, and without loss of thermal efficiency. A substantial program of risk assessment and HAZOP studies was used to protect underground miners from leaks of ammonia into the air or water circuits. Fully automatic control systems result in a totally unmanned plant that is supervised remotely. To improve efficiency, the plant is controlled by the outlet air temperature from the bulk air cooler û the first in the world to be controlled in this fashion. Engineering solutions to address environmental considerations were incorporated at the design stage through features such as the use of ammonia (a greenhouse-friendly gas) as the refrigerant, zero atmospheric discharge and a wastewater collection and re-use system.

"Mine decommissioning is the final phase in a mining project. Planning for decommissioning must commence for a proposed mine even before the government approves it. Queensland mining approvals require proponents to commit to completion (or closure) criteria defining successful rehabilitation. Queensland mining project statutory environmental authorities must also specify how progressive rehabilitation is to occur throughout the mining project. Final landforms with graded banks together with creek and run-off diversions are often required and constructed early in the life of a mining project. At closure, mining projects must demonstrate that future medium-term risks are not significant, or failing this, a residual risk financial payment must be made to the state. CSIRO climate change projections indicate that Queensland is likely to become warmer this century with less rainfall in parts and with extreme rainfall events likely to occur more frequently. This project was undertaken to?determine: if current rehabilitation planning tools assist in determining the environmental risks from mining closure not adequately addressing climate change if these risks are addressed by current rehabilitation outcomes.The north-west Queensland mining region and the central Queensland coalfields were represented in this project by five study sites. Local data sets for temperature, rainfall and rainfall intensity were produced using conservative greenhouse gas emission scenarios representing likely future atmospheres, and using the SimCLIM climate model, Evaporation data sets were also derived from available climate parameters. These projected climate variables supported equations and models used in Queensland to determine mining project rehabilitation completion criteria. Storm intensities and return intervals were directly applied to assess the likelihood of failure of engineered structures such as stormwater diversions and banks. Plant cover change determined by an existing growth model together with rainfall intensity and changes in the R and C factors of the universal soil loss equation (USLE) erosion model enabled estimates of long-term erosion rates. Flood estimates were undertaken using regional rated catchments.The study found that stormwater diversions and banks on recontoured rehabilitated landforms, if constructed to currently accepted completion criteria, would likely fail within 30 years and with the likelihood of failure steadily increasing thereafter. The change in likelihood of failure was able to be estimated and could be applied to the determination of residual environmental risk for approval of a surrender application involving rehabilitation. The USLE model showed that long-term erosion rates increased as a consequence of climate change from north to south across the Queensland mining precincts. Because the growth model did not consider carbon dioxide fertilisation affects, results would likely be worse-case.Likely climate change outcomes have consequential residual environmental risks of mining project rehabilitation failure. This increased risk may result in increased payments to the state from mining projects where high consequences exist. There are various methods currently in use to determine detonation performance of bulk explosive products including velocity of detonation (VOD), high speed photographic analysis, fragmentation analysis and unconfined detonation of samples. For assessment prior to detonation the current practice is limited to a measurement of cup density. This paper presents additional techniques that have been developed to provide measurement and assessment of bulk explosive products. Techniques applicable prior to detonation include a mobile laboratory to allow on-site chemical and physical analysis of sensitised products and ‘in-hole density’ measurement to monitor the in-hole density during sleep time. Assessment of detonation performance is achieved using detonation pressure sensors. These sensors allow measurement of detonation pressure, average VOD, propagation time and magnitude of the pressure induced in the explosive column by detonation of adjacent blastholes.CITATION:Cavanough, G, Torrance, A C, Rock, J and Olsson, A, 2015.
