Macraes Mining Company Limited operates a 2.1 million tonnes per annum gold processing plant at Macraes Flat, Otago. This uses a conventional CIL route to treat oxide ore, and a flotation, grind, CIL route for sulfide ore. This paper describes the design and operation of this process plant.

Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) is a copper, gold and magnetite mining and processing operation located 38km north east of Cloncurry. The EHM ore body has an average grade of 0.9% copper (chalcopyrite), 0.5g/t gold and 22% magnetite.Open pit mining commenced in March 1998, but EHM transitioned to underground mining in December 2012, extending the life of operations beyond 2024. The underground mine currently produces up to 3Mt/year of ore, hauled up a decline by truck. This figure shall double in 2014 with the completion of a 1000m shaft. The EHM Concentrator has a nameplate capacity of 10Mt/year. In June 2011, Xstrata Copper acquired the Mount Margaret resource to supplement underground production and utilise the full capacity of the Concentrator. The Mount Margaret Mining (MMM) operation was established to develop the five deposits making up the resource by way of open pit mining.Copper concentrate is produced by the EHM Concentrator via grinding, flotation and dewatering circuits. The grinding circuit comprises a SAG and ball mill in a closed AB configuration. Flotation consists of a rougher train, regrind and three stages of cleaning, with the tail from the first stage reporting to the tailings thickener.The mineralogy of the MMM ores is complex, comprising fine textures of active pyrite, copper oxides, native copper, clay and secondary copper sulphides. This paper provides an overview of the metallurgical test work completed to forecast the performance of the MMM ores through the EHM Concentrator and identify flow sheet modifications for maximising copper recovery and producing a saleable concentrate. A large and increasing data base of apatite fission track results from sedimentary and granitic rocks exposed within the south-eastern highlands and along the continental margin ofAustralia provides constraints for the tectonic development of the south-eastern passive margin. The fission track results suggest that many regions of the south-eastern margin of Australia experienced distinct episodes of relatively rapid cooling during the middle Cretaceous to early Tertiary that can be attributed to the effects of rifting. One cooling episode is middle Cretaceous in age and related to denudation of the south eastern highlands from Tasmania to northern New South Wales between ~90 - 100 Ma. Rocks exposed along the present coast line record a later episode of rapid cooling, which is diachronous and decreases in age northward from ~80 to 90 Ma in northern Tasmania to southern New South Wales, ~60 - 80 Ma in central and northern New South Wales, and to ~50 - 60 Ma in southern Queensland. The results are consistent with models suggesting that underplating occurred inward of the rift along the eastern margin of Australia as a result of the onset of continental extension in the Tasman Sea at ~96 Ma. This resulted in a significant change in base level and km-scale denudation of much of the southeastern highlands. Subsequently, as breakup commenced during the Late Cretaceous at ~80 Ma and continued into the Paleocene at ~60 Ma, the second stage of cooling was imprinted on the rocks along the margin. This cooling is probably due to the relaxation of elevated geothermal gradients associated with rifting as well as some denudation. Because rifting was oblique to the present-day coast, different regions record different ages of cooling associated with the rift. The southern regions of New South Wales and Victoria yield ages associated with earlier rifting while regions of northern New South Wales and southern Queensland give ages associated with later rifting.

Solid. dense, air-cooled slag can fulfil most, if not all, the functions of natural stone for civil engineering purposes. The value of pumice, also, has long been appreciated, and processes for the manufacture of similar synthetic material for light-weight concretes and insulating fills have been developed in past years.Foamed slag is, in effect, blast furnace pumice and is often referred to on the European continent as metallurgical pumice. It is made by the treatment of molten blast furnace slags with a critical quantity of water during which process the slag cools and expands into a sponge-like mass. The connection between foamed slag and air-cooled slag is also considered and a basis for density control given.All blast furnace slag cannot be foamed to give a product which would comply with B.S.S.877; 1939 Foamed Blast Furnace Slag. A large proportion of the total output of molten slag lacks the necessary inherent properties. This investigation attempts to discover the conditions necessary for the production of foamed slag capable of meeting the British specification.EARLIER WORKIt was generally accepted (Parker, 1951; Gallai-Hatchard, 1955) that the spongy structure of foamed slag was caused mechanically by steam trapped in the slag when it was poured into water. It was assumed that slags which would not foam would not trap steam, because their viscosities and surface tensions were unsatisfactory, on account of temperature and/or composition. The earliest systematic investigation was made by Frisak (1923) who attempted to establish a limiting chemical composition for foamable slags. He decided that foamable slags covered most blast furnace slag compositions on the basis of silica, alumina, and lime, and further "that the replacement of lime by magnesia up to 15 per cent has no noteworthy effect on foamability, that moderate quantities of alkalis are not deleterious, that sulphur raises the foamability and that MnO is only deleterious in the presence of 1...

Dust sampling is pivotal in estimating the ‘dose’ of dust exposure and in deriving dose-response curves in epidemiological studies. Over the last half century, gravimetric sampling has been the fundamental means for dust exposure monitoring using recognised respirable size-selective standards. In Australia, a gravimetric sampling technique has been followed since 1983 using the Higgins-Dewell (HD) type cyclones (AS2985). The re-emergence of ‘Black Lung’ or Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis (CWP) in Queensland, Australia has re-kindled the need for better understanding of personal dust monitoring, compliance determination, accuracy, timeliness of sampling results and dust control systems. Reporting dust levels in real time empowers miners and operators to take immediate action to avoid being exposed to excessive airborne dust. Two decades of intensive research in the USA has led to the introduction of gravimetric based continuous personal dust monitors (CPDMs) called PDM3700 as compliance tools. The new real-time mass based sensor is a continuous mass based dust monitor using the Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) principle and is regarded as significantly superior to the current gravimetric sampling methodology.Recently the overall respirable dust standard in USA coalmines has been reduced from the historic 2.0 to 1.5 mg/m3. This paper provides the results of a comparative pairwise study of an existing gravimetric sampler and the PDM3700 carried out in 3 different Australian underground mines. The field results consistently suggest that there is a significant ‘measurement bias’ between the current gravimetric HD sampler and the PDM3700 monitor operated using a similar HD type cyclone. The results show that the currently used cyclone measurements are approximately 59 per cent higher than the ‘auditable’ PDM3700 monitor data at the current compliance limit of 3 mg/m3. Based on a review of the extensive data collected, the differences can in part be attributed to the aerosol size selectivity of the samplers with the current gravimetric sampler used in mines, collecting more larger sized particles (D90 of 15 µm). This finding has significant consequences for historic exposure results and their use in medical surveillance programs, as well as the current approach to non-compliance determination.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. The success of smooth blasting essentially depends on geological condition of rock. Also, in the perimeter hole, borehole pressures with light, well-distributed explosive loads are important to minimise overbreak. In order to simulate perimeter holes with scaled model test, the borehole pressure was considered as a factor of scale. Hydraulic oil pressure is applied as borehole pressure instead of using explosives and detonators in order to remove the undesirable effects of detonators in an experimental set-up of just two perimeter holes in a tunnel blast. The borehole pressure on a perimeter hole is nearly reproduced with hydraulic pressure which is generated by non-electric detonators in the hermetical cylinder.

Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. This paper discusses the progress of the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine from the pre-feasibility study completed in 2005, through commencement of development access in 2008, completion of the feasibility in 2010 and cave initiation in late 2015. This fourth lift of caving in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is located 500 m below the currently producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and represents approximately half a billion tonnes of ore and around 1900 planned drawpoints, scheduled to be mined at a peak of 80 000 t/d.The paper reviews the mine design, access requirements, planned footprint sequence and major fixed facility installations such as ventilation, oreflow and shops. The Mesozoic iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) mineralisation in southern Perú and the northern Chile coastal IOCG belt have emerged as two of the major exploration targets in the Central Andes in the last two decades. These Mesozoic Andean IOCG deposits formed in two mineralisation epochs, the Middle-Late Jurassic (170–150 Ma) and Early Cretaceous (130–110 Ma), with the major Cu-rich IOCG deposits located in the Early Cretaceous mineralisation belt. The early studies in some IOCG centres support a magmtic-hydrothermal model for both Cu-rich IOCG deposits and broadly contemporaneous Cu-poor ‘Kiruna-type’ magnetite deposits. However, recent evidence from field, geochronology, fluid inclusions and stable isotopes show that in the major Central Andean deposits (eg Raúl-Condestable, Mina Justa in southern Perú, La Candelaria-Punta del Cobre and Mantoverde in northern Chile), the incursion of evaporite-sourced basinal brines or sea water may be a prerequisite for economic Cu mineralisation. Moreover, the Cu-poor massive magnetite deposits could be interpreted as a product from iron oxide melt, with minimal intervention by non-magmatic fluids. Therefore, they could represent two contrasted deposit types and contain little genetic relationships. The different roles of magmatism during the Mesozoic are responsible for the variable mineralisation in the Central Andes, including IOCG, magnetite and ‘manto-type’ deposits. THE Wonthaggi coal-field lies south easterly from Melbourne at a distance by rail of 86 miles, on the flats of the Powlett River, immediately to the south of the deep-cut valleys and steep intervening ridges in the Jurassic rocks of the Bass Range and itsfoot-hills. The coal-bearing area is covered with a thin layer of late Tertiary and Recent deposits, which serve to mask the true character of the underlying coal-bearing rocks and effectually prevent the appearance of any coal outcrop. Two or three bores sunk prior to 1890 had shown the locality to be really a potential coal-bearing one. Project management is not a task to be undertaken lightly. Mining projects generally present even more challenges due to ChinaÆs remoteness and complexity. Having experiences in project management in the West is certainly an asset, but China can present the uninitiated with any number of headaches. To undertake a project there can have many problems that are unique to China. For the last 15 years, China has seen an increasing number of foreign capital investment projects in the mining industry. Practices involved in mining project development have experienced/are experiencing an evolution. Since 1996, Sino Gold Mining Ltd has delivered three mines in China, ie Jianchaling Gold Mine, Jinfeng Gold Mine and White Mountain Gold Mine. Through the work, Sino Gold has established a solid knowledge base and a capable and skilful workforce in effectively undertaking mining projects in China. This paper is concerned with the experiences accumulated so far by Sino Gold in project management in China. An overall review is conducted regarding the reform of the mining project development in China. Opportunities and challenges are highlighted within the political, economic and culture context. Brief summaries of the development of the three gold mines are presented.

Deposits of the metalloids arsenic and antimony occur in quartz veins of mesothermal hydrothermalsystems in the South Island as arsenopyrite (AsFeS) and stibnite (Sb2S3). Arsenopyrite and stibnite occur in natural exposures in gold-mining areas, and additional arsenopyrite and stibnite have been exposed to the atmosphere by mining activity. At present the drinking water limits for dissolved As and Sb are 10 ppb and 3 ppb respectively. Sampling and analysis techniques are critical to determination of metalloid concentrations at these low levels. Endeavour Inlet in the Marlborough Sounds is an historic mining area (late 19th Century) with elevated As and Sb in waters emanating from mineralised rocks. Waters running out of abandoned adits have concentrations of As and/or Sb up to ppm levels. Natural waters have high Sb and low As, and the As levels increase markedly where anthropogenic activity has exposed rock. Changes in Sb/As ratio could potentially be used to quantify the anthropogenic component of metalloid mobility on mine sites on the 100-year time scale.

In stopes of the 2000- and 2150-ft. levels in the North mine section of North Broken Hill Limited, whence a substantial proportion of the company's production is being drawn, and especially in stopes which involve the portion known as the Northern orebody, occurs it light-coloured friable porous material which represents average grade ore from which the lead and zinc minerals, and certain gangue constituents, have been largely or wholly removed by leaching. The 2000- and 2150-ft. levels lie, respectively, 1550 and 1700 ft. below extreme base of the pre-mine oxidized zone. Composition of the cellular product shows it to be supergene. Test Work on High Throughput Diamond Tracer Recovery from Alluvial Recovery Tailings with a Containerised Optical Sorter Under Real Production Conditions Worldwide alluvial diamond deposits are traditionally processed with dense media separation and XRF sorters, hand picking or grease tables. The test work conducted verifies the performance of an optical sorter detecting the transparency of particles for diamond recovery from the DMS concentrate, eg XRF-sorter and handpicking tailings. The containerised setup enables economically feasible, high throughput, semi-mobile setups to retreat recovery tailings from alluvial and also primary deposits. The test work has been conducted with quartz and glass particles, which are less transparent or comparably transparent, under realistic production conditions on a 600 mm belt machine with an installed electrical power of only 21 kW. The results show that 99 per cent recovery can be reached at a throughput of 10 t/h in the -8 + 2 mm fraction and at 22 t/h in the -25 + 8 mm fraction. At a throughput of 18 t/h a recovery of 88 per cent has been assessed. At a further escalation of the throughput, dust in the sorter container made sorting impossible in the coarse fraction and the recovery decreased significantly in the fine fraction. Analysis of the belt coverage indicates that higher throughputs of the coarse fraction can be fed onto the optical sorter if the dust extraction system is improved. The results are basis for the decision to conservatively feed 20 t/h of the coarse fraction and 17 t/h of the fine fraction in day to day production. The settings have been applied to sort alluvial recovery tailings in South Africa and will be applied to sort the recovery tailings of a primary deposit in Lesotho. The test work has shown that an optical sorter can be used to retreat recovery tailings with high throughputs. The compact setup of a screen and a 9 m standard container enables semi-mobile, temporary setups for small recovery tailings dumps and remote areas. In addition, sorting on transparency ensures the recovery of high value low-fluorescent diamonds.

Water use and wastewater management is becoming a focus for many industries around Australia and the rest of the world. Good quality water is increasingly being recognised as a precious resource, and regulations on the bulk storage and discharge of waste streams is becoming more stringent in order to protect the environment, existing water reserves and the communities that use these resources. Components such as heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide, and sulfate from acid mine drainage are some that occur at mining and metallurgical processing sites. Removal of such components can allow safe re-use of these streams, reducing the new water requirements of the process, or else allowing acceptable discharge to the environment. Re-use or discharge of treated water eliminates or reduces the risk associated with storage of large volumes of contaminated water on site.Technologies where a contaminant is selectively precipitated and removed as a sludge are used for many of these treatments. Selection of the best treatment option for wastewater must depend on what is suitable to each site, and consider not only the nature of the contaminant, but also other aspects, including the location and situation of the site, local regulations, cost of reagents, the sensitivity of the local environment and waste sludge disposal options.
