The cyclone, or centrifugal separator, ,is firmly established in industry as a low cost separator of solids from gases.While it will also separate fluids of different densities, and solids from liquids, its main use is to remove relatively fine dusts from gases whose pr~erties are generally not greatly different from those of air. This latter phase of operation is the one that will be dealt with here.The duty of such a cyclone separating system is to take in a supply of dusty gas and separate it into its components of dust and clean gas as perfectly as possible for the least consumption of pressure head. Any separation at all causes pressure loss and, in general, the greater the separation, the greater the pressure drop needed to effect it. The percentage of dust in suspension which is separated from the gas-dust mixture is commonly called the collection or separation efficiency. Overall or "true" efficiency must take pressure drop into account and may be considered as proportional to the ratio of the percentage of dust collected to the resultant pressure drop. For any cyclone It will vary with different dusts.Many commercial adaptions of the simple cyclone are made solely on the basis of pressure drop improvement, without taking into account the effect on separation efficiency, probably because the latter is so difficult to assess correctly. It appears unfortunate but true that the majority of such adaptions and patent gadgets fitted to cyclones which decrease pressure drop, do have an adverse effect on separation. In other' words, the true efficiency is seldom increased but often diminished.Without a knowledge of what actually goes on inside a cyclone, it is impossible fully to appreciate the real effect of a modification. Recent work on decoppering lead is reviewed CUS is formed rapidly even from dilute solutions of copper in lead. The mechanism of decoppering is discussed and an explanation for the retention of metals such as silver in lead is advanced. As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the, Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300°C.. CuS, which is not an equilibrium product, is found m decoppermg drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3Pb2S2 is formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by stirring in sulphur. Decoppering bIsmuth IS thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of CuBiS2 The Cu-Pb-S system IS the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as the presence of ternary sulphIde or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.

Our ultimate resources come from the Sun and the Earth System. At this time we face a world crisis in energy, water and soil resources. Global pollution problems are increasing in almost all nations. There is an urgent need to use our vast knowledge with a new wisdom and this requires new integrated teams of experts to provide the best alternatives for the needed new development problems. These teams must include economists, engineers and a broad spectrum of scientists. Today it is possible to produce clean energy, stop soil erosion, clean water and reduce and use wastes of many types.   There is a great need to improve science, natural science, education at all levels. All people must know how our planet works and that fluctuations, some inevitable, some controllable, are inevitable and that we must prepare for them. And it is clear that protecting the environment, eliminating pollution, preserving bio diversity is good economics. Ecology Economy cannot be separated.

The Greymouth Coalfield contains New Zealand's greatest known resource of bituminous rank coal. The coals are of very high quality, with low ash and sulphur contents and a range of other properties that makes them desirable for a wide range of uses. In fact only a few producers around the world today can offer coals with such exceptional properties. This suggests that Greymouth coal has potential as a premium export trading commodity. These assertions have been largely confirmed by a comprehensive exploration drilling programme funded by Mines Division û Ministry of Energy between 1979 and 1984. The program, forming part of the NZ Coal Resources Survey, was carried out under contract by Lime and Marble Ltd. The drilling of 49 deep, predominantly cored, holes at 1000 m intervals over the coalfield has generated a vast amount of data. It has shown the existence of three major potentially minable coal deposits containing 233 x 106, 33 x 106 and 15 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. Investigations have at this stage only identified targets and these estimates represent 'in ground' resources, not recoverable reserves. Recent geological studies as well as past and present mining have clearly highlighted the problems posed by the complexity of the coalfield geology. The coalfield lies within a mobile zone in the earth's crust known as the Paporoa Tectonic Zone, which has been active from at least mid-Cretaceous to the present time. Currently this factor poses the greatest obstacle to the determination of mining possibility of the, defined deposit and ultimately will strongly influence any future mining development. The Greymouth Coalfield has, however, had a long and eventful mining history spanning the last 120 years, where 32.5 x 106 tonnes of coal has been won from over 100 mines. In spite of the problems facing development, the large quantities and exceptional quality of the remaining coal will act as a strong inducement to persevere with this difficult but potentially valuable resource.

When zinc is electrowon from concentrates or residues of high manganese content, the zinc sulphate electrolyte may contain high levels of manganese. The manganese level is usually controlled by removal of manganese at the anode as the dioxide during the zinc electrodeposition stage.By increasing the temperature of an electrolyte containing 8 gll manganese from 35°C to 90°C, decreasing the acidity from 100 gll to 30 gll, reducing the current density from 432.A.m-2 t6 286 A.m-2 and using new lead anodes containing over 0·75 per cent silver, the current efficiency for manganese dioxide removal was .increased from less than 1 per cent to over 20 per cent.At the same time the current efficiency for zinc deposition was maintained above 90 per cent by additions of high molecular weight cationic polyacrylamides to the cell. By utilization of these conditions in a small number of cells, the manganese level in the circuit could be economically concrolled to any desired level.With these conditions the formation of the dioxide changes from an indirect route, via Mn04-, to a direct oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn02.The incorporation of impurities such as Pb, K, NH4, Cu, Ni, or Fe makes the deposit unsatisfactory for direct use in Zn - Mn02 dry cells. The deposit structure changes from cryptomelane at low temperature to y3-Mn02 at high temperature.

Truck fires in a tunnel can create heat release rates (HRR) significantly higher than 100 MW. Because of a fast spread of smoke and heat the self-rescuing period is shortened significantly. Furthermore, it was experienced that firefighters are not able to approach the fire because of enormous heat and radiation. As consequence, the fire may spread to adjacent vehicles, which is reported for distances of more than 50 m. Tunnels can be damaged severely by fires and the repair works causes long closing time of tunnels. In addition to direct costs for the refurbishment of the tunnel, further economic losses will occur due to the closure time. Conventional deluge systems in Japanese and Australian road tunnels have been known since the 1960s. During the last years the research work was concentrated in the development of more effective and cost-effective solutions based on water mist technology. Orientating fire tests as well as specifications of minimum requirements were carried out within the European research project UPTUN. This basic work was extended by the safety of life in tunnels (SOLIT) research project, funded by the German government. The scope of SOLIT was not only to study the effects of water mist fire suppression systems in tunnels, but also the interactions with other safety systems, such as fire detection, passive fire protection or ventilation. Furthermore, the integration of active fire suppression systems into a holistic tunnel safety system was part of the work program. Within this research project a large-scale fire test program with more than 50 fire tests, including 25 truck fires with a potential HRR of almost 200 MW, was carried out in the test tunnel of San Pedro des Anes (Spain). Furthermore, a two-week testing and training period with the Madrid Fire Brigade was carried out after the SOLIT program. Two fundamental results were achieved during the fire tests:Primarily, water mist systems are able to control the HRR of fires in tunnels, so the atmosphere will be improved significantly. Hazardous effects of toxic smoke on people will be reduced and due to the reduction of temperatures and radiation, a firefighterÆs approach is improved significantly. Furthermore, the fire spread will be hampered and the thermal load on the building structure also be reduced. Secondarily, due to positive interactions with the ventilation system, the effectiveness of a tunnel ventilation system, longitudinal as well as semi-transversal, is increased significantly. Based on the results of the SOLIT research project, a water mist system was applied into several parts of the M30 tunnels in Madrid. As a basic principle the technical equipment and the methodology of implementation comply with the UPTUN 251 guidance, recommending minimum standards for water-based fire suppression systems in tunnels.

Flat jack stress determinations in selected colliery roadways have revealed a range of measured stress from 330 lb/sq. in. tension to 3,750 lb/sq. in. compression. Photoelastic examination of loaded plastic and actual rock model mine openings has shown that the primary horizontal stress required to attain these measured stresses would be from one to three times the superincumbent vertical load.Examination of roof movement with a borehole extensometer and a series of anchors at various horizons to 30 feet in a vertical roof borehole showed that when a standing face was advanced the roof movement was practically confined to the lower two feet. The majority of this movement occurred during the 36 hours after mining at this face commenced.The use of a radioactive isotope and a scintillation counter in a pair of parallel boreholes is a sensitive and accurate method of roof bedding plane crack detection.INTRODUCTIONA knowledge of strata stresses is required to understand the deformation of an underground opening and, in particular, the roof behaviour. It is the aim of investigations currently being conducted by Australian Coal Association (Research) Ltd. to determine the stress existing around mine openings and the location and magnitude of roof movement.STRATA PRESSURE MEASUREMENTMost measurements of strata stress are performed at the surface of underground openings and the majority measure the change of strain resulting from stress relief. The accuracy of the measured value of stress depends upon knowledge of the rock modulus of elasticity. The flat jack method has the advantage that strain relief is restored by a measured stress applied directly by the jack. The rock modulus of elasticity can also be determined.

Single particle breakage tests have been used by a number of researchers to investigate some salient features of the complex comminution process. The characteristics of the common single particle breakage tests such as single impact, double impact and slow compression tests are examined and the results from these tests are compared. A comparison of the results from single particle breakage tests with grindability and ball mill tests is given. Application of the results from single particle breakage tests to modelling industrial comminution processes is described. The necessity for further research into single particle breakage tests to develop a simple but comprehensive technique for estimating the breakage characteristics of ores is discussed.

THE following paper embodies the present practice and the results of past experience in the survey departments of two of the leading Broken Hill mines, the Central (Sulphide Corporation Ltd.) and the Broken Hill South S. M. Co. N. L.The authors intend to limit the scope of this paper to a consideration of office methods, as much has recently appeared in technical literature concerning field work, both surface and underground. Special reference may here be made to a valuable paper on 'Mine Surveying' by H W Gartrell, in Vol XIII of Transactions, in which the author gives considerable attention to field work. Moreover, much of the office work described in current literature is American, and sometimes not suited to local conditions, being ·often exceedingly elaborate and demanding a large staff of assistants. It is believed that the methods of recording information described in this paper are sufficiently simple and flexible to be adapted to most Australian mines. Brief acknowledgement must be made to the work done by Americans, who have raised mine surveying to the position of a separate profession, instead of being merely an unimportant branch of land surveying.

Beaches contain the residue of eroded rocks which have resisted weathering, and it is common to find in all beaches some of the harder, heavy minerals. The natural sorting action of waves and winds tends to concentrate the heavy minerals into banded deposits.The value of such deposits is extremely variable. Even amongst the more concentrated deposits, the principal minerals, in the vast majority of cases, are magnetic, titaniferous magnetite and other forms of iron oxide, which, in the present state of mineral economics and technology, are of little or no value.Valuable minerals of fairly common occurrence in beach sand deposits are rutile, zircon, ilmenite, monazite and chromite, and each of these minerals, as well as others of less common occurrence, is obtained from beach deposits in various parts of the world.Along a stretch of 300 miles of coast from Coff's Harbour in New South Wales to North Stradbroke Island in Queensland, occur unique concentrations of heavy minerals. The principal minerals which occur are rutile, zircon and ilmenite, and for some years these deposits have contributed half to three-quarters of the world's consumption of rutile and zircon 1, ,2. The only other notable beach sand concentrations in Australia are at a number of places in the southwest of Western Australia, where deposits containing highgrade ilmenite are being developed.

With the expansion of magnetite projects in Australia has come the opportunity to take advantage of newer technologies that were not necessarily available when the magnetite industries of North America and Europe were maturing. One of these technologies is the IsaMill, originally developed for the economic treatment of ultra-fine grind (UFG) duties of Mount Isa Mines. As understanding of the IsaMill has increased, so too has the ability to process coarser feeds while maintaining the same energy efficiency advantage and tight product size distribution that originally made the IsaMill so attractive. In the case of magnetite the hard non-elastic ceramic grinding media is ideally suited to the grinding duty when compared to steel grinding media. The centripetal separator and naturally steep product size distribution curve provide a mill discharge that maximises the critical concentrate grade. This paper analyses the effect of the IsaMill grinding technology on the full-scale Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) magnetite operation along with pilot and lab scale demonstrations of optimisation. Issues encountered and the solutions to maximise the mill throughput and quality are examined in an effort to promote better understanding across the industry. Deposits of the Reefton Goldfield, West Coast, New Zealand, are hosted on N-NE striking, upright folds of the Greenland Group. High-grade quartz lodes are hosted on axial planar shears, typically have short strike lengths, and form shoots that pitch steeply on the hosting shears. Deposits within the field area of a detailed structural study share these characteristics. Field mapping and microstructural analysis have demonstrated that the Greenland Group was affected by a multideformational sequence. Gold mineralisation is hosted on shears axial planar to the F2 folds, but occurred during a subsequent deformation event (D4). Deformation during D4 resulted from N-NE directed shortening, near parallel to the trend of the F2 folds. This event produced F4 kink folds that were accommodated by layer parallel slip on S2 parallel shears, gold mineralisation during D4 being confined to the dilational hinges of F4 kink folds. The semi-brittle nature of D4 allowed the formation of stockwork veining and disseminated mineralisation within the F4 hinge zones. Most deposits within the goldfield are similar to those within the field area, and are interpreted to have been mineralised during D4. The two largest known deposits within the goldfield, however, are distinct. The Blackwater Deposit, striking parallel to the hosting folds, has a combined strike length of 1 km. The Globe-Progress Deposit is hosted on an E-W striking discordant shear in which a brittle zone of disseminated mineralisation encompasses high-grade quartz lodes. The characteristics that distiguish the Globe and Blackwater deposits may be due to formation before and after D4 respectively. Detailed field mapping in the vicinity of known deposits throughout the goldfield will further refine the relationships between the F2 folds, later deformations and the localisation of ore deposits. Additional mapping may also help constrain the position, orientation and extent of additional orebodies.

On the southern flank ofLihir Island, a group of three volcanic cones were discovered at water depths from 1000 - 1500 m. The volcanoes are located in a narrow zone of recent seismic activity and elevated heat flow (up to 100 mW/m2). The recovered rocks consist of fresh alkali-olivine basalts, clinopyroxene-rich basalts, and porphyritic phlogopite basalts. One of the volcanoes has a recently erupted ejecta blanket (recovery of warm ash!), containing a suite of abundant mafic to ultramafic xenoliths. These xenoliths appear to represent a unique cross-section of subduction-modified mantle material sampled by volatile-rich primary fore-arc magma during its ascent to the seafloor. The most spectacular finding was the discovery of an active hydrothermal system with associated vent fauna and mineralization at Edison Seamount, and the recovery of unusually gold-rich (up to 43 ppm Au) hydrothermal precipitates in 1050 m water depth at the top of Conical Seamount, only 25 km south of the world-class epithermal Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir. The discovery of submarine hydrothermal vents associated with highly alkaline, quartz-undersaturated fore-arc volcanics represents a significant departure from similar hydrothermal systems on the mid-ocean ridges and in back-arc basins. The high gold grades in hydrothermal precipitates at Conical Seamount may indicate the first documented example of a shallow-marine epithermal system analogous to those known on land, and has important implications' for the gold potential of submarine arc environments.

This paper aims to summarise the discovery of the QTS Central resource, a previously unidentified +1 Mt inferred resource that lies between two major CSA resource systems.The 1.7 Mt at 5.76 per cent Cu, QTS Central ore system represents 1/6th of the CSA mineral resource and was discovered in 2014 based on the accumulation of historic exploration records dating back to 1989.The CSA deposit consists of five ore systems hosted within turbidite-derived siltstones (CSA Siltstone) and lesser sandstones (five per cent) of the Devonian Amphitheatre Group. The host sediments strike approximately north–south with a steep westerly dip and exhibit a well-developed east dipping cleavage. Most CSA mineralisation is hosted within dilation zones at the intersection of cross-cutting structures and is interpreted as epigenetic in origin.Alteration and weak mineralisation, up plunge to the reported QTS Central mineral resource, was initially detected in 1990 during a downhole electromagnetic conductivity (EM) study, where one hole indicated an off-hole conductor, later tested with four diamond holes. One of these diamond holes intersected 3 m at 7.5 per cent Cu at 200 m. Development of the 9070 Subway drive in 2005/2006, linked the QTS North and QTS South workings and intersected structures interpreted to host QTS Central mineralisation. Subsequent drilling proximal to the 9070 Subway in 2007 identified an up plunge extension to the QTS Central zone (UDD07152: 1.8 m at 6.3 per cent Cu from 10.7 m). Work on QTS Central was largely forgotten until 2012 when the mining of a 450 m infrastructure drive provided a platform to test the anomalous grades. In December 2013, drill hole UDD13055A intersected 20.9 m at 7.2 per cent Cu from 378 m. By the end of 2014, the QTS Central inferred resource was 1.0 Mt at 6 per cent Cu and 18 g/t Ag (Hosken and Apaza, 2014). Late in 2016, further infill drilling occurred from two fronts to increase confidence in the QTS Central resource. The results of this drilling are expected late in 2017.The current interpretation indicates the QTS Central system consists of two main lenses hosted within closely bedded sandstones and siltstones. The sandstone in general is not mineralised, being heavily silicified, while the siltstone is mineralised and chloritised. The main mineralised lens is 75–200 m along strike and 450 m high. Massive sulfide feeder structures lie at the core of the two main lenses, although the characteristics of the QTS Central system tend toward the mineralisation being more chlorite-rich than in QTS North and QTS South.CITATION:Apaza, E and Neumayr, R, 2017.
