Magnesium and its alloys are attractive for use in automotive and aerospace applications because of their low density and good mechanical properties. However, difficulty in forming magnesium and the limited number of available commercial alloys limit their use. The present work reviews the efforts to improve the attractiveness of magnesium through non-traditional processing, and presents results of current work on producing magnesium alloys via powder metallurgy (P/M). P/M can be used to alleviate the formability problem through near-net-shape processing, and also allows unique chemical compositions that can lead to new alloys with novel properties. The surface layer formed on the Mg powders during processing acts as a barrier to diffusion and sintering is problematic. The layer contains oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of magnesium, formed by reactions with the atmosphere. There are several means to possibly overcome this barrier. Alloying additions have been identified that may promote surface layer disruption during sintering. Processing variables such as sintering atmosphere may reduce the layer or allow the formation of less detrimental compounds. Post-sintering processes such as hot working may disrupt the layer and improve density. The experimental effect of all these processing parameters is presented in this paper.

Arsenic bearing minerals such as enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13), which may associate with major copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), chalcocite (Cu2S) and bomite (Cu2FeS4), usually report to the copper concentrate in conventional flotation due to their similar flotation properties. Arsenic in a copper concentrate causes environmental problems and also problems in the subsequent pyrometallurgical process. Voltammetric studies were carried out to investigate the oxidation characteristics of enargite, tennantite, chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bomite. Contact angle measurements and micro-flotation tests were conducted to examine the flotation characteristics of enargite and chalcopyrite under controlled pulp potentials. Selective flotation of enargite from chalcopyrite under varied pulp potentials was conducted to investigate the feasibility of arsenic removal from a copper concentrate. The test results indicate that the non-arsenic bearing copper minerals ( chalcopyrite, chalcocite and bornite) were easier to oxidise than arsenic bearing minerals ( enargite and tennantite) in an alkaline solution. Enargite floated well at a potential as high as +0.45 V vs. SCE while chalcopyrite was completely depressed at a potential higher than +0.43 V vs. SCE. Selective flotation revealed that enargite can be successfully removed from chalcopyrite through controlling the pulp potential at +0.30 ~ +0.50 V vs. SCE.

MOIL Limited (formerly Manganese Ore India Limited), a Government Enterprise, under the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, produces about 1.1 million tonnes (T) of manganese ore annually from three opencast and seven underground mines. The underground operations are mining using an overhand cut and fill method. The orebody is too narrow for the use of larger equipment and the poor to fair rock mass quality limits the size of stable excavations. Prior to the 1990s underground support consisted primarily of timber square sets in tandem with timber chocks and props. As mine production requirements increased throughout the 1990s led to larger opening sizes and more modern support practices. Research was conducted on ground support design based on rock classification and empirical techniques for designing ground support. Based on the findings and field trials, the Company adopted full column cement grouted cable bolts for back support. Instrumented field trials, using extensometers and load cells on the cable support confirmed the support effectiveness. Stope design was based on two and three dimensional stress modeling which resulted in a significant increase in stope dimensions. The rock mechanics studies for safe stope design were carried out using numerical modeling tool in two and three dimensions for the analysis of stresses. Based on the findings, the safe stope geometry with new stoping parameters was introduced. The earlier stope length of 30 mtrs were changed to 60 mtrs with in situ rib pillar at the cross cuts and in situ post pillars to be left-out in the stope. This leads the formation of of panel comprising of three stopes, for production, supporting and filling. For mechanical handling of ROM in stopes Side Discharge Loaders (SDL) were introduced. The above changes have improved the face productivity from 2?3.5 T with manual operation and 9 T with SDL. The above rapid mining operations has improved the stope productivity but reduced the stope life from 6 to 3 years. For the improvement of the stope availability, further studies were conducted by numerical modeling of stress analysis. The related studies confirmed that with the existing supporting system and proper instrumentation, level interval could be increased up to 45 mtrs from the existing 30 mtrs at deeper levels. At present below 12th Level interval is 45 m at Balaghat Mine. For future mechanization program for introduction of Single Boomers, LPDT, Cutting Machines etc for the development headings rock mechanics studies are underway. The paper provides details of rock mechanics studies that were carried out to study efficacy of the cable bolt support, safe stoping parameters and increased level interval for the improvements in safety, production and productivity at Balaghat Mine.

The mining industry is facing declining feed grades which require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. Pre-concentration aims to remove barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible to reduce processing costs, energy consumption, water losses, and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing production and profitability. This may be achieved using bulk ore sorting—the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor. This paper evaluates the technical and economic viability of bulk ore sorting for the PanAust Phu Kham copper deposit in Lao PDR. Bulk ore sorting technology is described briefly along with discussion of appropriate sensor and diversion systems for the Phu Kham operation. To evaluate the economic implications, the actual mined material and costs from 2014 were used as the base-case. Sampling data was not available; therefore, the ore grade variability that would feed a bulk ore sorter was estimated using geo-statistical tools based on mine grade control data. The sorter performance when treating this material was simulated considering the accuracy of the sensor measurement and errors associated with material diversion. The impact on inferred cash flow was estimated for several different scenarios considering the additional costs for sorter operation and reject handling. The evaluation demonstrated that bulk ore sorting at Phu Kham has the potential to increase the amount of metal in product and/or reduce processing plant throughput (and costs) to improve the annual inferred cash flow for the conditions investigated. The sorter is the gatekeeper – only material above the cut-off grade (value-adding) reports to the processing plant; no waste dilutes the feed. Likewise, above cutoff grade material is not lost to waste; preventing lost revenue.

In this work, a detailed characterization of the cyclic damage mechanisms on duty in car heat exchangers has been carried out in order to improve their reliability. The material which consists in very thin (<0.3 mm thick) sheets formed of 3 co-rolled aluminum alloys (4045 /3916/ 4045) has been brazed in order to obtain metallurgical and surface conditions representative of those of the real components. Fatigue tests at constant stress amplitude have been performed at room temperature and 120°C in order i) to characterize the cyclic resistance of the studied materials and ii) to study the effect of temperature on the fatigue damage mechanism. The mechanisms leading to failure have been identified from post mortem fractographic analysis. The Wohler curves obtained show that, contrary to common structural Al alloys, this type of thin sheet brazed multi material can be cycled for several hundred thousand cycles at very high stress level (> ~ 80 % of the tensile strength). This behaviour is analysed with respect to the microstructure resulting from the brazing process and the low number of grains present in the sample thickness (around 5 grains).

"Among the first published papers from Prof. Torstein Utigard was work on imaging the aluminum electrolysis process and in-situ measurements of aluminum in cryolite melts. He and Prof. Jim Toguri used an x-ray radiographic technique to measure interfacial tension of aluminum drops. Publications using this equipment for aluminum electrolysis spanned from 1985 to 2006. As well, other methods were used to better understand electrolysis in molten salts, including hot-stage microscopy, direct observations from above the bath and water modeling techniques. For chloride systems (for magnesium and lithium), it is possible to see side-on the electrolysis using a quartz cell. In honour of Prof. Utigard’s contribution to this field, this paper presents a summary of work on visualization of molten salt electrolysis, including work done at the authors’ labs and others around the world. The paper will summarize key findings and their possible impact on molten salt electrolysis."

"The present study reports solvent extraction and separation of zinc from concentrated nickel sulfate solution. In our previous study, Zn and Cd in cold filter cake (CFC, 45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, and 2.5-4% Ni) were extracted by alkaline leaching followed by electrowinning processes respectively. The strip solution from electrowinning process, was a pregnant liquor solution (PLS) containing 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process for separation of traces of Zn from high grade nickel. The zinc free raffinate containing 16.6 g/l Ni sulfate solution will flow to nickel electrowinning plant for cathode production. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is the organic phase used in this study. The effects of various parameters such as organic phase concentration (10- 40 % v/v), pH (1.5-3), and temperature (25 and 45°) are investigated. Zinc over nickel separation factor increases by increasing pH from1.5 to 3. The results show that 98.7% of Zn was loaded at25°C O/A ratio of 1, pH 3, and 10% vol. D2EHPA. A 10 M NaOH is used for pH control. However, replacement of pH controlling agent with ammonia solution (25%. v/v) results in interesting observations. Ammonia addition, reduces the solubility of Ni2+ cations in solution. Nickel starts to precipitate from raffinate in a crystalline bluish-green form. The obtained crystals are characterized by XRF and identified to be nickel-bearing analog of boussingaultite, a rare sulfate mineral of nickel with chemical formula of Ni (NH4)2(SO4)2.6H2O. The crystallization rate of crystals is studied. It is a slow precipitation process with 75% in 4 days.INTRODUCTION Annually, many hydrometallurgical processes such as electrowinning, solvent extraction and leaching are applied to waste filter cakes in Zanjan, Iran. These additional processes on filter cakes are critical from both environmental and economic points of view. CFC (cold filter cake) is a toxic but valuable filter cake (45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, 2.5-4% Ni, and 0.2-1.5% Cu) produced in many zinc production plants. Our research group at Research and Engineering Company for Non-ferrous Metals (ReCo.), developed a series of hydrometallurgical methods for extraction of zinc, cadmium and nickel from CFC (Moradkhani, & Rasouli 2012). The recovery of zinc and cadmium with alkaline leaching and electrowinning was successfully studied. The strip sulfate solution from cadmium electrowinning unit, contains high concentration of nickel with some traces of zinc impurity. This pregnant liquor solution (PLS) was analyzed and reported to contain 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process to separate Zn from nickel (Fig. 1). The organic phase stripping solution containing 4.2 g/l zinc and 200 ppm nickel can be circulated and used in the acidic leaching step. This generates nickel solution with high purity suitable for nickel cathode production."

Introduction Probably the newest thing in mining safety is the apparent dissatisfaction on the part of the mineral industry, as represented by both management and labour, and the general public of many nations in which mining is conducted, with the safety record of the mining industry. This is reflected by published comments in the technical press;&apos; in labour periodicals, in popular Journals and periodicals, and in the daily press (5, 11). Despite what may be said to the contrary, mining in the United States is becoming safer, and this trend has been evident for several years (see Figures 1 to 4). Because the author&apos;s experience has been mostly in the United States this paper will discuss briefly some recent observations in the United States that have a bearing on mining safety. Because coal mining is of primary interest to the Mining Society of Nova Scotia, the paper treats mostly of coal-mining safety; however, many hazards in mining .are common to all mines, regardless of the minerals mined.

Newmont Ghana Gold Limited&apos;s Ahafo Operation has matured from its project ramp up stage into steady state operations after three years of operation. Management focus has shifted from addressing construction and commissioning problems to optimization and improvement. This focus change has coincided with the introduction by Newmont of a Continuous Improvement (CI) program across the company which provided a project management methodology that can be used in the execution of smaller scale projects. This paper focuses on the application of CI principles at the Ahafo Plant through the discussion of several case studies that demonstrate how these principles are applied.

Introduction Situated 182 miles east of Vancouver, on the Kettle Valley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, the Princeton coal field is readily accessible to the Coast markets. The area covers approximately forty square miles and present indications are that the deposits should contain at least 300,000,000 tons of coal. Comparatively little development has yet taken place in this coal field. Since the commencement of recorded output, the collieries operating in this area have produced 1,640,518 tons of coal. The coal field proper includes only the Tertiary deposits adjacent to the town of Princeton and does not include the Coalmont or Nicola deposits. Production has never been on a large scale. The largest annual output from any property was 81, 780 long tons mined at the Granby colliery in 1940. Coal output was first recorded in 1909 and since that time fifteen properties are reported to have either mined coal or to have done prospecting or development work; of these, only two are presently active. However, none of the properties now inactive were closed because their coal resources were exhausted. The accompanying key map shows the extent of the Princeton coal field, and the location of the coal mines and prospects in this field General Geology The Princeton field is underlain by rocks of Oligocene age and is one of the series of more or less isolated Tertiary lake basins in which coal, or lignite, has been found in the interior of British Columbia. Resting on the Nicola group rocks of Triassic age, the Princeton sedimentaries consist of sandstones, conglomerates, shales, bentonite, bentonitic clays, and several seams of coal. Tertiary volcanics occur both above and below the stratified rocks and in places they have been thrust through the overlying measures. In some areas, the coal has been burned to a red ash as the result of vulcanism, while in other parts some of the moisture has been driven from the coal, thus improving the grade. The field can best be described by dividing it into two areas: the Southern area, lying to the south of the town of Princeton, where most of the mining has been done; and the Northern area, to the north of Princeton, where very little development has taken place.

"Copper-zinc ores often contain gold and silver, which can be recovered into copper concentrate by flotation as by-product. The challenges for operations that produce copper, zinc, gold and silver are the separation of copper and zinc and the low grade of precious metals. Ashele copper-zinc ore in north China contains 2.38% Cu, 0.69% Zn, 0.21 g/t Au and 18.10 g/t Ag and the plant produces copper and zinc concentrates, with gold and silver being recovered into copper concentrate. Copper occurs mainly as chalcopyrite and Zn occurs as sphalerite. Copper is well recovered with a recovery of over 94%. However, the recovery of Zn is substantially low (around 50%) due to fine grain size of sphalerite. In addition, gold recovery is much lower than expected and only 33% of gold in the flotation feed was recovered. The grade of gold in copper concentrate is also lower than the required payable grade (1.0 g/t). To determine the cause for lower Zn and Au recoveries, a plant survey program was conducted on the operation. The information acquired shows that the loss of Zn was mainly in the copper concentrates (accounting for approximately 38% of the head assay); of which, 24% was liberated, 8.5% was associated with chalcopyrite and 4.6% was associated with pyrite, indicating that the separation of copper and zinc was the main cause for the Zn loss, with liberation being the second cause for Zn loss. Future effort in improving Zn recovery should be focused on the separation of zinc from copper. Gold in the ore occurs as both microscopic gold and submicroscopic gold, accounting for 36% and 64% of the head assay, respectively. Microscopic gold occurs mainly as native gold and electrum; it is relatively coarse with a grain size of 10 to 240 µm and a large portion can be recovered by gravity. Submicroscopic gold was mainly carried by pyrite (accounting for 38%), and to a less extent, by tennantite (15%) and chalcopyrite (10%). Gold in sphalerite is nominal (1%). It is suggested that more coarse gold and tennantite be recovered and a gold recovery increase can then be achieved to obtain a copper concentrate with over 1.0 g/t Au through flowsheet optimization. Gravity concentration should be investigated and may be worth added into the existing flowsheet to maximum the gold recovery and grade.INTRODUCTIONCopper-zinc ores containing gold and silver is a subtype of polymetallic sulphide ores. Unlike porphyry copper sulphide ores and iron-oxide copper-gold ores, this type of ores often contains substantial amounts of zinc and lead. Polymetallic sulphide ores are mainly distributed in Canada, such as at the LaRonde and Horne deposits. Other examples include Mt. Morgan in Australia and Boliden in Sweden. Globally, production and reserves from gold-rich VMS deposits account for 1370 t gold. This is equivalent to 1% of the world production and reserves, whereas the Canadian total for gold-rich VMS deposits is 870 t, representing close to 10 % of Canadian production and reserves (Gosselin & Dube, 2005a, 2005b). Flotation is the principal process for processing the copper-zinc sulphides ores, for subsequent smelting, roasting, or hydrometallurgical treatment. Oxidized copper-zinc ores can also be processed using leaching technology. For example, at LaRonde operation (a Cu-Zn-Pb ore containing 3-4 g/t Au and 60-100 g/t Ag) the flowsheet consists mainly of a copper flotation circuit and a zinc flotation circuit followed by a cyanidation process of flotation tails. The precious metals are recovered with copper concentrate, zinc concentrate and cyanidation of zinc tails via Merrill Crowe precipitation (Zhou et al., 2005)."

This paper deals with coal sampling in general and with mechanical coal sampling in particular. The necessity of obtaining representative samples is emphasized. Other sections of the paper are devoted to the design and selection of automatic samplers, with a consideration of the three main types, and the testing, operation and maintenance of these samplers. The cost of the installation of an automated sampling system must be related to the value of the material to be sampled, to the volume of coal involved, and to the savings in labour and economy which can be achieved. Introduction T HE Committee?:; on Coal Sampling of the Coal Study Subsection, Thermal Power Section (Eastern Zone), Canadian Electrical Association, was established in November, 1963, to "study the various problem areas of coal sampling." The first undertaking of the Committee was to at-tempt to survey the problem areas of coal sampling through an evaluation of coal sampling difficulties as experienced at both the plant design and operational levels within the electric utilities represented on the Committee. "The LaRonde mill was commissioned in 1988 and began treating ore from the Penna shaft in 2000. The mill has been expanded to accommodate 7,500 t/day, but ramped down to 6,000 t/day since the deep extension began. The process recovers gold, silver, and base metals. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking gold-pyrite concentrate to a treatment plant feeding pulp to the LaRonde mill, increasing gold output by 40,000 oz. In 2009, the high-grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the LaRonde plant, increasing gold output by 120,000 oz. This paper outlines the metallurgical considerations related to the treatment of different ore types.RÉSUMÉ Le concentrateur de la mine LaRonde a été mis en service en 1988 et a commencé à traiter le minerai du puits Penna en 2000. La capacité du concentrateur a augmenté afin de permettre le traitement de 7 500 tonnes de minerai par jour, capacité qui est retombée à 6 000 tonnes par jour (tpj) depuis le début de l’extension en profondeur de la mine. Ce procédé permet de récupérer de l’or, de l’argent et des métaux communs. En 2008, l’usine de traitement Goldex a commencé à transporter par camion du concentré de pyrite et d’or vers une usine de traitement alimentant en pulpe le concentrateur de LaRonde, augmentant ainsi la production d’or de 40 000 onces. En 2009, les installations de traitement du minerai à haute teneur de Lapa ont été annexées à l’usine de traitement de LaRonde, augmentant la production d’or de 120 000 onces. Cet article passe en revue les considérations métallurgiques liées au traitement de différents types de minerai.INTRODUCTIONThe LaRonde metallurgical plant in the Abitibi region of Quebec, Canada, evolved into a mature milling site following expansions in 2000–2003, thanks to improved processes, manpower, and water treatment capabilities that better accommodate the complex constituents of the LaRonde ore. The ore requires a sequence of grinding, copper- lead and zinc flotation, and precious metals leaching, ending with a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery. A portion (35%) of the tailings is sent back underground as paste backfill after being treated with the SO2-air cyanide destruction process. The tailings area has a dedicated cyanide destruction and metal precipitation area through which the used water passes before returning as recycled water. A biological water treatment plant was built in 2004 to address water toxicity in the final effluent. The water toxicity was the result of the high sulfide content of the LaRonde ore (from thiocyanate or stable cyanide species buildup) and the use of 90% recirculated water in the mill. The water treatment plant uses bacteria to transform thiocyanate into nitrates and precipitate phosphorus from the water before it is discharged into the environment."

"An innovative concept is proposed whereby the operating power for haul trucks in certain areas of an underground mine are reduced in order to lower ventilation costs. Airflow that must be provided for diesel-powered equipment in most jurisdictions are regulated based on engine peak power capability and engine emissions, both of which can be lowered by artificially reducing the capacity of the engine through the engine control unit. Advances in asset tracking and ventilation on demand enable this methodology and this study demonstrates that it could represent significant value for mine operators. An examination of haul truck duty cycle indicates that de-rating of engine operating power based on the truck’s location in the mine can enable a step change in ventilation rates, often with no material impact on working conditions. Methods for implementation and estimate of cost savings will be defined.INTRODUCTION Ventilation of underground workings remains a significant operating cost burden for modern mine operators. In particular, ventilation rates for underground diesel mining equipment are often defined by local regulatory bodies and are assumed to present minimal opportunity for optimization or savings, at least until battery propulsion systems can be adopted. Commonly, the quantity of air flow required is defined by the peak rated engine output power of diesel equipment. For example, Ontario Regulation 854 SS 183.1 (3) states that “The flow of air must be at least 0.06 cubic metres per second for each kilowatt of power of the diesel-powered equipment operating in the workplace”. Jurisdictions that define air flow using the prescribed CANMET or MSHA ratings use peak engine emissions to calculate air flow required for dilution ventilation. These approaches are similar in that the maximum power capability of a vehicle’s engine is used to define the ventilation rate in all areas where it travels, regardless of what power output is actually used in any of those areas. Examination of the duty cycle of a typical underground haul truck identifies a large variance in the power output of the vehicle depending on its location in the mine and the activities undertaken at these locations. For example, travel on a mining sub-level requires a fraction of the truck’s peak power due to the minimal grade and significantly reduced travel speed. So if we can reliably reduce the peak engine power capacity and engine emissions in areas where peak power is not required, we can logically cut the ventilation rates for those areas."

Cylindrical samples of pure titanium were subjected to uniaxial compression at room temperature, leading to the formation of three generations of twins. Many primary contraction twins were observed as the initial texture was favourable for their formation. Numerous secondary extension twins formed within the primary contraction twins and some tertiary contraction twins within the secondary extension twins. The orientations of these three generations of twins were determined by electron backscatter diffraction techniques and their associated Schmid factors (SFs) were calculated. The formation of the twin variants selected in each generation and the absence of certain potential variants are accounted for by rotating the twinning displacement gradient tensor expressed in the twin system reference frame into the crystallographic reference frame of the relevant neighbouring grain. The presence of the observed primary, secondary and tertiary twins is explained in terms of the ease of imposing the required accommodation strains on the neighbouring grains. By contrast, certain first, second and third generation potential high SF twins were absent because their formation would have required accommodation by the most difficult deformation mode: pyramidal glide.

As the Cadia mill was the first 40ft diameter SAG mill, commissioned in 1998, its performance, liner and discharge design attracted considerable international attention. Twelve years on, the liner design and the control philosophy are being readdressed to further improve the mill?s performance. A comprehensive series of 3D liner scans, over life of the liner, have been used to calibrate liner mass loss and progressive changes in the liner profile. This data is being used to provide true charge mass and mill filling, plus progressive trajectory profiles over life of liner. This information, along with measures of mill performance over liner life, is being used to select the optimal operating conditions as the liner wears, and hopes to inform future liner design.

As part of Inco&apos;s $115 million Fluid Bed Roaster SO2 Abatement Project, a new weak acid treatment plant (WATP) was constructed to treat bleed solutions from the Copper Cliff Smelting Complex gas-cleaning circuits. The WATP produces an iron-arsenic co-precipitate, termed "basic ferric arsenate" (BFA), which requires disposal in an environmentally acceptable manner. Following analysis of many potential options, the short-listed disposal alternatives were: A) Co-disposal of the BFA?gypsum sludge with rock tailings, a portion of which would be used in mine backfill, with the remainder being sent to the tailings area, and B) Co-disposal of BFA?gypsum sludge with pyrrhotite tailings in the tailings area. Testwork showed that the addition of BFA?gypsum sludge to mine backfill samples increased the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the backfill for most samples, especially those at lower binder content ratios. Extensive analysis was conducted on samples taken from the Copper Cliff tailings area, where BFA?gypsum sludge from Inco&apos;s Copper Refining Electrowinning Department has been co-deposited with pyrrhotite tailings since 1990. Pore water samples from these areas contained very low arsenic concentrations, indicating that the arsenic had remained stable in that environment. Ultimately, co-deposition with pyrrhotite tailings was chosen as the preferred option for the disposal of BFA?gypsum sludge from Inco&apos;s new WATP.

The cost of raw material and energy is a continuing driving force towards working with increasing the recycling of ore based steelmaking residues. In Sweden no on-site sinter plants are operated at the integrated steelworks. Instead, selected residues from the plant are incorporated in a cold bonded briquette product which is recycled to the process via the blast furnace (BF). Since the BF sludge is the major bleed of zinc out of the furnace it is required to be de-zinced prior to recycling in the briquette product. In the present work landfilled BF sludge has been characterized with respect to chemical composition, particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The sludge was also subjected to laboratory scale hydrocyclone trials aiming at reducing the zinc content making the sludge viable for recycling. The results suggested that the sludge had been agglomerated prior to the characterization and hydrocyclone treatment. The zinc removal using the hydrocyclone was discussed.

Introduction By far the largest part of the money raised for mining is raised by honest and legitimate means; but a not inconsiderable amount is raised by fraudulent sales methods. It will be conceded without argument that the greatest menace to the mining business is the fraudulent promoter. The sale of worthless mining stocks to the public by high-pressure. salesmen, house to house canvassers, telephone campaigns, fraudulent use of the mails, fraudulent statements, and reloading, has seriously prejudiced the public against even legitimate mining. A very small percentage of the funds raised by such fraudulent means is ever spent on the property, but instead is absorbed by the promoter in illegitimate&apos; profits, enormous commissions, high office rents, and other expenditures, and is just so much subtracted from the fund which the legitimate developer needs to bring new mines to the point of production. The mining fraternity has been at fault in that, while they recognized this situation, they made no adequate attempt to rectify it. They knew that these fraudulent practises were conducted by parasites who attached themselves to the mining business in boom times and claimed to be part and parcel of it, but who were merely professional salesmen and promoters who, when there was not a mining boom, were selling sky-line real-estate, worthless oil stocks, or fraudulent securities which happened to be popular with the public. While mining people had this distinction well in mind, the public did not differentiate between the crooked promoter temporarily selling fraudulent mining stock and the honest promoter who made mining finance his life work; and we did little to make this distinction clear to the public or to sweep these money grabbers out of our house. The historic boom of 1927-8 and &apos;29 brought with it the usual crop of crooked mining promoters, and the scandals resulting from their operations forced the Governments into the enactment of laws to attempt to protect the gullible public against the operations of these meanest of thieves and to appease public clamour.

Compared with the traditional pre-treatment process, biological oxidation process has many advantages including higher gold recovery, less cost, easier operation. The bio-oxidation reactor is the most important equipment for biological oxidation process. In this paper, the characteristics of biological oxidation are investigated, and the design principles are proposed based on laboratory tests. Both increasing the tank height and taking new inflation system can enhance higher dissolved oxygen. The new type of large-scale industrial bio-oxidation reactor is designed, which is 9.5 m in diameter and 10 m in height. The bio-oxidation reactor metallurgical performance has been tested by industrial-scale experiment. The slurry of flotation concentrate is divided into two parts to feed two bio-oxidation reactors. The feeding rates of two reactors are adjusted on the basis of getting the same content of S, Fe, As in overflow. The result shows that the feeding rate of the new type of 700 m3 bio-oxidation reactor is 3.72 m3 per hour, and the feed rate of the conventional 700 m3 bio-oxidation reactor was 3.23 m3 per hour. The processing capacity of the former is 15.2% higher than that of the later, which demonstrates the new type of bio-oxidation reactor has higher oxidation rate.
