The effect of leach promoting reagent LPF on the leaching process of a weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore has been investigated and the mechanism is discussed. The result shows that the leach promoting reagent LPF can enhance the leaching extraction of rare earth ore effectively. With the addition of LPF to the lixiviant at a concentration of 0.1%, the leaching extraction increased by more than 8%, the ammonium sulfate concentration could be decreased by 25%, and the leaching liquid/solid ratio reduced by 34%. The mechanism analysis shows that LPF can react with rare earth ions and form soluble coordination compounds, thus reducing the activity of the leached rare earth ions, increasing the concentration difference for ion diffusion, and promoting the rare earth leaching process. These results will hopefully help point to a new approach to making the leaching process of low-grade weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore more efficient and with lower lixiviant consumption.

"The sillimanite group minerals, kyanite, sillimanite and andalusite are identified as alumino-silicate minerals with the common chemical composition AIP3.Si02' so that each possesses similar physical properties. Kyanite is the most abundant mineral and mainly occurs in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia; sillimanite occurs in Ontario and Manitoba; and andalusite in Nova Scotia. The main use for the sillimanite-group minerals is in refractory applications for the production of refractory bricks and shapes. In refractory applications, the main performance criterion is the relative percentage of mullite formed within the material during firing. This phase gives a greater degree of resistance to creep deformation and slag attack, and improves the ability of the refractory to withstand high temperatures under load. The beneficiation of refractory silicate minerals has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, and the former Mines Branch. Eighteen kyanite, two sillimanite, and three andalusite evaluation studies were conducted between 1933 and 1987. A review of some of the more important studies is presented, which includes information concerning mineralogy, beneficiation methods and flotation data."

A synthesis of colloidal gold shell particles with a silica core is described. Small gold nanoclusters were attached to the functionalized surface of colloidal silica particles. Reductive growth and coalescence of these clusters lead to the formation of a closed gold layer. By variation of the thickness of this gold layer and the radius of the shell it is possible to adjust the plasmon resonance of the gold shell particles over the whole visible and infrared region of the spectrum. The optical properties of the particles made are in good agreement with theoretical calculations for coreshell particles. Due to their low polydispersity these gold shell particles form in solution large crystals with submicron lattice constants. It is also possible to produce hollow gold shells by dissolution of the silica core. A new method to coat the silica core gold shell particles with an additional outer silica shell is also presented. This allows due to a reduction in the Van-der-Waals forces to make more permanent dried crystals and facilitates functionalization of the particles for use in various photonic applications.

"In order to obtain reproducible and reproducible results in batch flotation, researchers have tried various approaches, from normalized testing, to modifying existing cells, and even designing new machines. The paper reviews the basic concepts that must be fulfilled in a laboratory flotation machine, and present the FLOTOMATEC design, which results from five years of testing and development. In addition to providing accurate measurements of air flowrate, power consumption, agitation speed, the cell eliminates most operator induced errors. Results of experiments comparing FLOTOMATEC to a conventional cell, as well as reproducibility tests are given. Introduction The use of batch flotation machines in mineral processing research and development is very common. These machines have been used for many years without almost any change in their design, instrumentation or automation. "The utility of high-density stream sediment and stream water sampling to the exploration for silver deposits was investigated by the study of the epithermal Ag-Au base-metal prospect at Lagalochan in western Scotland. The geology of Lagalochan is dominated by a calc-alkaline Caledonian intrusive complex emplaced into Dalradian Supergroup rocks (Harris et al., 1988a). The complex consists of subvolcanic porphyrytic rocks associated with intense hydrothermal alteration and brecciation. Early Cu-Ag-Mo-rich mineralization is found in the core of the complex with later Pb-Zn-Ag-Au-As-Sb-rich mineralization toward the margins (op. cit.).Stream sediment sample analysis spatially resolved the Cu-rich and Ag-rich mineralization. Ag and Cu anomalies relative to local background values were found in all size fractions analyzed (-125µm, +125 µm, +180 µm, +250 µm) but the more pronounced anomalies were found in the -125 µm fraction. The coarser fractions generally revealed more erratic but longer dispersion trails. The separation of Cu-rich and Ag-rich mineralization is also apparent in the distribution of relatively high dissolved Cu and Ag in stream waters, particular when expressed relative to the solute load as Cu/TDS and Ag/TDS.The mineralization at Lagalochan is indicated by Ag, Cu and Pb stream sediment and water concentrations that are anomalous with respect to local backgrounds, but are difficult to distinguish from regional backgrounds. This emphasizes the further potential of high-density stream water sampling,in particular, as a viable geochemical exploration tool on a sub-regional scale for epithermal depositsin relatively unpolluted upland terranes."

"The High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is gaining acceptance in the mineral processing industry and has become a competitive technology in reducing the specific energy consumption in Mineral processing plants. The amount of samples required for HPGR amenability testwork and HPGR wear tests is usually high and often cannot be available at early stage of projects were only a few drill cores are available.Although HPGR was initiated from small scale piston die compression tests, the development of small scale piston die test to predict the performance of HPGR has been slow.The objectives of this paper was to present the designs, operating procedure of piston-die press and operating conditions which have resulted in similar particle size distribution obtained from a piston die test and HPGR Labwal unit starting from the same feed size distribution. Testwork were conducted using a 2 MN piston-die press and a Labwal HPGR unit on major South African ore types, viz, gold, platinum and iron ores. The results obtained show that piston-die test can generate data to predict energy consumption, product size distribution, and even to evaluate the edge effect."

The in situ performance of Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB) systems can be monitored to improve understanding of the paste?s behaviour and therefore optimize the geomechanical design of the cemented paste backfill system (i.e., minimize binder content, minimize fill barricade complexity, maximize fill rate-of-rise during backfilling, and minimize cure time before resuming production blasting in proximity). However, undertaking such a monitoring program is inherently complex, because the rate-of-rise and accompanying self-weight induced stresses occur at a time rate that is similar to the rate of hydration and associated increase in the paste?s stiffness and strength. In addition, arching within the stope complicates the overall stress distribution. Therefore, to obtain a complete picture of the CPB?s response, it is necessary to measure several variables (3-D total pressures, water pressures and suctions, hydration rates, and blasting induced vibrations) at a given ?point?, and take all such measurements at many points throughout the fill mass as well as at barricade locations. The overall testing program can therefore be logistically difficult to implement and have an apparent high cost. However, if the program is successful, the benefits arising from improved mine design can significantly outweigh the seemingly high initial capital and labour costs of the monitoring program. A case study involving an instrumented paste fill in a tall and narrow Alimak stope is briefly outlined. Plans for a similar experiment in a large long-hole stope are then considered.

Abstract - The flux of sediment matter was determined using sediment traps near a black smoker ("Saracen’s Head," Broken Spur hydrothermal field) and the mineral and chemical compositions of the settled matter were examined. The metallic minerals are represented by Fe sulfides (pyrite and pyrrhotite), and Cu and Zn sulfides are also found in small and equal quantities. The hydrothermal suspended matter contains abiogenic calcite in amounts comparable to that in Ca sulfates. The content of silica and, specifically, of amorphous Si is unusually low. Such correlations between chemical elements and minerals, together with the isotopic compositions of S and C, are characteristic of a relatively young and active stage in the evolution of a hydrothermal system. Sediment traps within and under neutrally buoyant hydrothermal plumes collected biogenic material in addition to hydrothermal components. Microbial chemosynthetic production of organic carbon near the hydrothermal vent is comparable to primary production in the euphotic layer. Fe, Zn, Ca, Si, Ba and P are enriched in particulate matter in comparison to the background. A vast compound plume containing the discharge of multiple hydrothermal vents was found to the south of the Broken Spur hydrothermal field.

Due to the detrimental effect of platelet iron-rich intermetallics on mechanical properties (particularly ductility) in cast alloys, it has been essential to transform these phases into Chinese script morphology. In the present work, the effects of Mn and/or Si addition and cooling rate on the phase transformation of the iron-rich intermetallics in 206 cast alloys with different Fe contents ranging from 0.15 % to 0.5 % were systematically investigated. The results obtained showed that platelet ß-Fe and Al3(FeMn), Chinese script a-Fe, Alm(FeMn) and Al6(FeMn) can be observed in the 206 cast alloys, depending on the Fe, Mn and Si contents as well as the cooling rate. It was found that the addition of either Mn or Si favors the formation of Chinese script iron-rich intermetallics but inhibits the precipitation of the platelet phases. In addition, the combined addition of both Mn and Si has a synergistic effect on the phase transformation. Furthermore, there exists a critical cooling rate to effectively suppress the formation of platelet iron-rich intermetallics for a given alloy. The threshold cooling rate decreases with increasing Fe, Mn and Si contents. Casting process maps are established to correlate the intermetallics precipitated with alloy chemistry and cooling rate for 206 cast alloys containing various Fe levels.

The control of carbon concentration in a counter current carbon absorption circuit is critical to optimise gold recovery. MINTEK has developed a carbon movement controller to address this potentially problematic area in gold extraction. This controller reduces operator interaction by automating carbon movement. Elution schedules are entered into the control system, which then moves the carbon through the circuit into the first adsorption tank until enough carbon is available for elution. This is done while maintaining the specified carbon profile within the circuit. MINTEK has also developed an online-carbonconcentration- meter to measure carbon concentration in pulp. The meter uses an ultrasonic measurement technique. Long term testing has shown the measurement to be robust and require minimal maintenance. Results from a gold mine in South Africa’s well known Witwatersrand gold producing area has shown a decrease in soluble gold loss between 30 - 50% when the controller was used.

"The effect of nitrogen on the flotation separation of sulphides from complex ores from Brunswick Mining and Smelting (New Brunswick) and Mattabi Mines (Ontario) was investigated. The most significant finding was enhanced pyrite floatability after as little as 3 minutes nitrogen conditioning. This was used in a novel sphalerite/pyrite separation process developed on the Brunswick ore. After aeration and Cu/Pb bulk flotation in air using xanthate the slurry was nitrogen conditioned, xanthate added and the pyrite floated in nitrogen. As an example up to 70% pyrite recovery with about 20% sphalerite recovery was achieved. Sphalerite was recovered from the pyrite tailings and the pyrite concentrate by copper-activation, raising the pH to 10 and floating in air. About 65-70% recovery at 35-40% Zn grade was achieved compared to 25% Zn grade by the conventional route. The process offers a promising alternative to current practice which seeks to depress pyrite at all stages. A possible mechanism of the effect of nitrogen is presented. INTRODUCTIONUse of gases other than air in froth flotation has been reported from time to time. [Podobnik and Shirley, 1982; Lin and Metzer, 1975]. Of all the gases, nitrogen would appear to hold the greatest practical promise because of its easy availability and chemical inertness. It is used in froth flotation in chalcopyrite-molybdenite separation [Redfearn, 1983]. The use of nitrogen in polysulphide chalcopyrite. this case is mainly to reduce the oxidation of a compound (Nokes reagent) used as a depressant for There is no reported use of nitrogen in the flotation of other sulphide minerals."

"Sulphide ores under certain circumstances will react with explosives to generate an autocatalytic chemical reaction. This reaction is exothermic and results in the production of large volumes of poisonous gases and creates an unsafe, unstable condition with the possibility of a low energy deflagration or even a detonation of the loaded hole. A Conjugate Anvil-Hammer Mill (CAHM) has the potential to replace conventional crushers and SAG mills, with their respective conveyors and stockpiles, in a SABC circuit. It may improve comminution circuit efficiency by 100%. CAHM compresses rock in a more efficient way, similar to 19th century stamp mills, which follows the fundamental research of Schönert (1990 & 1996). CAHM efficiency is being proven through the use of ROCKY (2011) Discrete Element Method (DEM). ROCKY features allow it to simulate realistic comminution. CAHM is customizable with many geometries that are rock-property specific. ROCKY’s wear modeling compliments the structural integrity of the design.

Accurately modeling and predicting long term mill throughput is one of the challenges facing metallurgists, geologists and mine engineers in their quest to consistently deliver accurate life of mine business plans. Batu Hijau has systematically improved long and short term mill throughput predictions since feasibility and commissioning in 1999. This has been achieved through a combination of ongoing improvement to the geology ore hardness and grade characterisation model, drill and blast optimisation and, by application of these data to model mill throughput. Batu Hijau has demonstrated the ability to consistently estimate long term mill throughput within ±2% accuracy. Aside from reliably predicting expected production rates with the existing plant configuration, this predictive ability provides a solid foundation for identifying operating and design criteria for short term grinding circuit optimisation and future expansions. This paper discusses ongoing throughput prediction model development at Batu Hijau based on geo-metallurgical characterisation. Also discussed are tools used for day to day production performance management. This includes on line "Mine to Mill" variable monitoring to improve operations parameter ecision making and performance assessment.

This paper presents an overview of the metallurgical work on the Strange Lake Alkalic Complex (SLAC), from historical development of the "Main Zone" to present day develoment of the "B Zone". The SLAC, originally discovered by the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) in the northeastern Canadian Shield of Québec and Labrador, is one of the world’s largest deposits of rare earth elements (REE) including yttrium and high field strength elements (HFSE) including zirconium, niobium, and titanium. It is part of a Precambrian, post-tectonic complex of peralkaline granites which intruded along the contact between gneisses and monzonites of the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield. Mineralization of interest at Strange Lake principally occurs within peralkaline granite-hosted pegmatite and aplite sheets and, to a lesser degree, within the host granites, particularly in intra-pegmatitic granites. The highest grade and metallurgically most favorable mineralization is in the upper, open pit mineable parts of the SLAC. Metallurgical development has been conducted under a number of mining companies, and various value metals have been targeted throughout the history of the deposit, including yttrium, zirconium, niobium, and rare earths. Historic processing routes tested have included ore beneficiation, atmospheric leaching, solvent extraction (SX), and metal precipitation. This paper also presents the metallurgical development supporting Quest Rare Minerals Ltd.’s (Quest) 2013 Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and 2014 Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA).

De nombreuses opérations mimères exploitent et traitent des minerais sulfurés pour concentrer des métaux precieux (Au, Ag ... ) OU des métaux de base (Cu, Pb, Zn ... ), laissant en fin de parcours des tonnages considérables de résidus plus ou moins générateurs de drainage minier acide (DMA) selon leur contenu en sulfures. De nos jours, Jes restrictions en matière de protection de l'environnement obligent Jes opérateurs miniers a trouver Jes solutions Jes plus efficaces pour préserver Jes sites environnants de la pollution due a l'oxydation des sulfures. Cette oxydation cause une acidification accrue du milieu et une mise en solution des metaux toxiques. L'utilisation des recouvrements multicouches est l'une des solutions Jes plus efficaces pour limiter la pollution liée au DMA mais entraine des coilts de construction qui sont souvent considérés par l'industrie miniere comme prohibitifs. Une façon de rendre cette technologie applicable, d'un point de vue économique, est de désulfurer Jes résidus à l'usine de traitement et d'utiliser la fraction inerte comme composante d'un recouvrernent multicouche. Cette opération de desulfuration peut etre réalisée par flottation non sélective des résidus dans le but d'obtenir d'une part un faible volume de concentré de sulfures qui devra être géré convenablement et d'autre part un rejet non générateur d'acide.

The Garford bulb anchor is a modified cable geometry developed and patented by Garford Ply Ltd. of Australia, and which has recently become widely available in Canada. It is produced by deforming the seven wires (including the central kingwire) of a standard cable into a bulb" (Fig. 1). Laboratory cable pull tests indicate that the bond capacity of the 25 mm Garford bulb anchor is comparable to the nutcase cable, in excess of the birdcage cable, and significantly higher than standard 7-wire strand. Its comparative advantage over the latter is most significant for tests at low radial confinement and high water:cement ratio grout, which corresponds to operational conditions of low quality rock (i.e. weak, highly fractured rock masses, foliated hanging walls, failed ground, etc.) and poor installation quality control (perhaps the most common explanation for cable bolt failures). It is under such conditions that cable bolting is often ineffective. The most impressive result is that for a reduction of the effective rock mass modulus by a factor of five, the Garford bulb cable capacity remains virtually unchanged.
