"The effect of sulfite and metabisulfite ions on the amyl xanthate flotation of copper-activated pyrite, in distilled water and seawater, has been studied by micro-flotation tests and redox potential measurements. The activation of pyrite was carried out varying copper ions concentration. It was found that in the presence of copper ions in solution, sulfite and metabisulfite are able to depress copper-activated pyrite at neutral or slightly acid pH. After the addition of sulfite or metabisulfite ions the resulting pH is more acidic with metabisulfite ions. A significant increase of the redox potential of the solution was observed as copper ions concentration increased. Then, the initial reducing conditions brought about by sulfite and metabisulfite ions, change abruptly to oxidizing conditions in the presence of copper ions. Under these oxidizing conditions, the metabisulfite showed to be an effective depressant for pyrite mainly in seawater. However, sulfite was a pyrite depressant in both distilled water and seawater. Based on these results, the pyrite depression by sulfoxy-depressants during the flotation of Cu/Mo ores in distilled water and seawater is discussed.INTRODUCTIONDepression of pyrite by sulfoxy-depressants (sulfite and metabisulfite) in the presence of copper ions is an important issue. This is particularly true when pyrite depression in the flotation of Cu/Mo sulfide ores is carried out in seawater. The use of lime in seawater must be avoided because the formation of magnesium hydroxy-complexes and precipitating magnesium hydroxide strongly depresses molybdenite flotation (Castro et al., 2014). In order to solve this problem, one large plant in Chile uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) instead of lime to depress pyrite in seawater. In plant practice, this also improves molybdenite flotation since with the use of MBS the pyrite depression is carried out at pH 6-7, instead the pH 11-12 usually employed with lime.From a general point of view, pyrite exhibits some natural floatability over acidic pH ranges and may be partially floated without thiol collectors (a coating of sulfur/polysulfides has been claimed). Therefore, pyrite flotation with xanthates is usually high in the acidic pH region, but decreases greatly at alkaline pH (Leppinen, 1990; Fornasiero and Ralston, 1992; Zhang et al., 1997)."

"All attempts to remove significant amounts of arsenic from enargite via neutral or reductive pyro routes have required operating temperatures between 600 and 700 º C, too high to propose an equipment development program. Operating at reduced pressures, or using hydrogen or elemental sulphur as a sweeping gas did not help to lower these temperatures. Admixing iron powder gave excellent results, but still required 700 º C. By fortuity, in recent experiments to produce tennantite from an enargite mineral sample, it was observed that enargite was completely converted to bornite, chalcopyrite with minor residual tennantite within an hour at 400-450 ºC. This is believed to be due to the presence of pyrite in the mineral sample treated. All earlier decomposition work appears to have been done on predominantly enargite (i.e. low pyrite) samples, or at high operating temperatures, ignoring possible reactions at lower temperature. The decomposition of enargite into iron substituted tennantite plus some bornite under evolution of liquid elemental sulphur, followed by further decomposition of this tennantite into bornite and volatile arsenic sulphides, appears experimentally feasible at these low temperatures and mimics described ore genesis pathways at > 250 ºC in saline solutions. "The Brenda mine is located in south central British Columbia, 22 km north west of Peachland, in the heart of the Okanagan Valley. Situated at an elevation of 1500 metres, the mine area straddles the divide between the headwaters of Trepanier Creek and Peachland Creek. These flow into Okanagan Lake, the chief valley water resource located 1100 metres below. The creeks are of great significance to the water management of the area as they constitute the water supply for the Municipality of Peachland, a thriving retirement community with a population of 5000. A location map is shown in Figure 1.The history of the Brenda Mine operation has been well documented previously. After twenty years of operation, the open pit mine shut down in June 1990 due to the depletion of its ore reserves. During the course of its life, it produced 109 million tonnes of waste rock which is thought to contain approximately 0.10% copper as chalcopyrite and 0.015% molybdenum as molybdenite stored in four rock piles around the pit. Similarly, approximately 200 million tonnes of tailings were produced grading 0.015% copper and 0.005% molybdenum. During operation, tailings were hydrocycloned to produce a coarse sand for dam building with the fine slime stored behind the dam. It is estimated that 40% of the tailings were used for the dam construction. The layout of the mine site is shown in Figure 2.The mine was operated under a zero discharge permit. This was achieved by diverting practically all surface water flowing towards the mine area around the site. Water affected by mine operations, was discharged to the tailings impoundment, and recycled to the mill for reuse. The recycle rate was 90% and seepage from the tailings embankment and saddle dam was pumped back to the tailings pond. Because acid drainage was not a problem with the low grade Brenda rock, runoff from the rockpiles was initially released to the local environment. However, due to the alkaline nature of the waste rock, dissolution of low concentrations of molybdenum in the site runoff waters became evident by the late 1970's. The molybdenum content of Peachland Lake, the water reservoir for the municipality of Peachland, approached the Canadian Drinking Water Standard of 0.25 ppm. By 1979, a series of diversion and collection ditches was completed to direct all runoff water from the rockpiles to the tailings impoundment area. This had a significant detrimental effect on the site water balance causing it to go into a considerable surplus condition. During normal operation, this oversupply was contained by the rate of tailings dam building. An economic shutdown of the mine during 1984 forced a limited discharge from the site to protect the integrity of the tailings dam."

"The internal operation of a tumbling mill is a very hostile environment and precludes the sustainable operation of internal sensors to measure the mechanisms of charge motion and breakage events. Instead indirect methodologies are required to expand the current understanding developed within a framework of perfect mixing of the mill contents. A number of measurement approaches have been successfully used to explore the operation of SAG mills including strain instrumented lifter bolts, mill shell strain measurement and thermal (energy balance) of operating mills.Early acoustics measurement was developed by Hardinge using a 'microphone' located close to the expected toe location. This signal was an indicator of the mill fill. Improvements were implemented with the use of two microphones straddling the toe location to try to increase the sensitivity of the measurement and reduce ambiguities. Further improvements included a filtered signal indicative of steel interactions. Unfortunately, the mechanisms of signal generation and the complexity of the processes do not provide a consistent signal.In recent years, advanced acoustic measurement using arrays of microphones utilising signal processing techniques have been implemented as SmartNoise and validated on over 30 mills. This paper will discuss the results obtained with signals such as water holdup, mill shell steel hits and two each of the toe and shoulder angles. An estimate of the internal mill component wear rates is also accessible.Advanced acoustic measurements with wide bandwidths when combined with physics models and process understanding has achieved a step change in the understanding of the dynamic internal operation of a tumbling mills on time scales of 80 ms. These techniques have been used extensively on SAG mills, but have also been applied to FAG and ball mills. Acoustic measurement is used for the rapid diagnosis of mill conditions and holistic control for optimisation and stability."

"Simulation of rare earth element solvent extraction processes for plant design and optimization is complex, requires extensive bench scale and pilot scale testing, and is traditionally performed using proprietary algorithms. The complexity of simulation is mainly due to traditional simulation software solvent extraction modules not being designed to simulate rare earth separation processes because of the interaction between each element. This paper presents an alternative method for designing and optimizing rare earth element solvent extraction separation processes using METSIM to converge each stage of the battery individually until the full battery reached ultimate convergence. A feed-forward controller is used to control the organic to aqueous flow ratio feeding the solvent extraction modules. This method minimizes the complexity of simulating such processes by using inexpensive batch solvent extraction data, and allowing for rapid theoretical optimization, by varying the process configuration and parameters from a graphic interface instead of the traditional code-based interface of most proprietary models. Comparison of the model predictions to pilot plant data reveals that the method can be used to accurately model rare earth solvent extraction processes, as illustrated by its application in the development of Rare Element Resources innovative process.INTRODUCTIONThe Rare Earth Elements (REEs) consist of 16 metals, specifically the 15 lanthanide elements and yttrium, which is typically found in the same mineral deposits as the lanthanides. Scandium can be associated with the rare earth elements, but is usually only present in trace amounts, and therefore omitted. The term “rare earths” originates from an old term used to designate minerals (earths) and their believed scarcity upon their initial discovery. The rare earths designation is now considered a misnomer because it was demonstrated that the crustal abundance of some rare earth elements, such as cerium, is known to be higher than many common metals, such as copper. However, enriched deposits are fairly uncommon compared to other similarly abundant metals. The REEs are typically divided into groups commonly consisting of light rare earths (LREEs), medium rare earths (MREE), and heavy rare earths (HREEs). Light rare earth elements include lanthanum to neodymium, medium rare earths include samarium to gadolinium and the heavy rare earth elements include terbium to lutetium, and yttrium. The REEs exhibit similar chemical characteristics and are usually extracted from the ore and processed into a mixed rare earth concentrate. The rare earth concentrate requires further processing in order to separate the REEs from each other and produce a series of single element products."

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC} has mined and processed an iron deposit in Western Labrador along the Labrador-Quebec border since the early 1960' s. Current capacity is approximately 19 million tonnes of concentrate, 70% of which is converted to pellets at these facilities.The ore deposits are located in hills rising 150 to 300 meters above the adjacent lakes, and most of them are covered by very little overburden. The iron minerals are mainly specular hematite and magnetite hosted in a quartz formation. Crude ore averages 40% Fe that is concentrated to 65.5% Fe. IOCC is an extensive operation extending from Labrador City NF to Sept-Iles Quebec. It consists of open pit mining, concentrating, pelletizing, railway, and dock loading facilities.The Concentrator liberates iron from the silica by crushing and grinding the ore to -14 mesh (-1190 microns}. Ground ore is concentrated in spirals and filtered for transportation. Spiral tailings are treated in a Magnetic Recovery Plant (Mag Plant} that recovers lost magnetite. Mag Plant tailings are treated in a Hematite Spiral Plant (Hem Plant} that scavenges fine iron remaining in this stream.This report deals with ongoing iron recovery initiatives within the ConcentratorIron Losses in the ConcentratorIron recovery at IOCC is approximately 70.5%. This compares with recoveries that range from 65% to 86% for other iron mines in our area. Other world large iron ore producers dig and ship concentrate quality ore directly out of the ground and have an effective recovery of 100%. With increasing costs for labour, equipment, and supplies an increase in iron recovery is required to keep the operation viable.More than 90% of our iron concentrate is produced by gravity separation using spirals. The physical characteristics of the iron minerals that most effect recovery are mineral grain size and degree of liberation. We divide ground ore into three size categories -coarse, intermediate, and fines. A brief description of each size fraction follows:"

"This paper reports solvent extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) carried out using a microfluidic device and considers the REE loading limit of the organic phase under laminar flow. The microfluidic device contacts aqueous and organic phase streams for a precisely defined contact time (subsecond resolution) and then separates them for offline analysis. Experiments are reported examining the effect of contact time on extraction. We focus on three REEs: one ‘light’ (Nd), one ‘mid’ (Dy), and one ‘heavy’ (Yb) REE, which are extracted using Cyanex® 572. It appears that loading limits may be locally exceeded in the organic phase near to the liquid-liquid interface, where third phase deposits are observed. Third phase formation was also observed close to the liquid-liquid interface in two-dimensional confinement, showing similar third phase adsorption on glass plates. It is also shown that, under microfluidic flow, a typical first ‘split’ between heavy REEs and light REEs can be carried out without exceeding loading limits.INTRODUCTIONMicrofluidic solvent extraction has emerged as a useful tool for studying extraction of metals in a mineral processing context (Ciceri, Mason, Harvie, Perera, & Stevens, 2013; Ciceri, Perera, & Stevens, 2011; Kriel et al., 2015; Mason, Ciceri, Harvie, Perera, & Stevens, 2013; Priest, Zhou, Klink, Sedev, & Ralston, 2012; Priest et al., 2011). The main advantages are the extremely well-defined and tunable flow behaviour, large surface-to-volume ratios, short contact times, and minimisation of sample and reagent amounts. Two main flow configurations have been studied to date: droplet-based and co-flowing streambased extraction. In the former, droplets are formed at a microchannel junction (usually a T-junction or flow-focusing junction) and flow downstream as plugs or ‘free’ droplets. In our case, stream-based extraction, the chip is a plate (often glass) with embedded microchannels (i.e. with cross-sections of tens of micrometres) that carry the aqueous and organic phases in contact without forming droplets. Thus, these chips play the role of a mixer in a conventional mixer-settler and phase separation takes place by branching the streams or collection in a vessel at the chip outlet. Stream-based extraction requires stable streams that are usually supported by a particular channel geometry (e.g. guide structure or small ‘pillars’) or surface chemistry, and flow parallel bounded by the liquid-liquid interface(Aota, Nonaka, Hibara, & Kitamori, 2006; Hibara et al., 2005; Hibara et al., 2002). Phases are disengaged downstream at a Y-junction, which is a qualitative difference between microfluidic and bulk extractions."

"Mesoporous materials with large specific surface area, pore size, and pore volume have been widely used in many fields such as ion exchange, gas separation, adsorption, and catalysis. Mesoporous materials prepared using natural zeolite have the advantages of both acid and alkali resistance. In this work, mesoporous materials were prepared using natural zeolite as the starting material and diethylenetriamine (DETA) as a template. The resulting samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and N2 adsorption-desorption experiments. The influence of the crystallization temperature and crystallization time on the specific surface area, pore volume, pore size, and morphology of the resulting mesoporous materials are also discussed. Our results show that for an increase in both the crystallization temperature and time, the average pore size first increases then decreases, while the specific surface area first decreases then increases. Based on this work, we concluded that the optimal crystallization temperature was 2003 and the optimal crystallization time was 60 h. These conditions gave an average pore size of 17.93 nm, a pore volume of 0.048 cm3g-1, and a specific surface area of 16.48 m2g-1.INTRODUCTIONMesoporous zeolite, as the name implies, is a highly porous crystalline zeolite. This material is of interest due to its high hydrothermal stability, its adsorption and diffusion properties for macromolecules, and its excellent selectivity and activity as a catalyst. In recent years, it has become a hot spot among research of porous catalytic materials and has been widely used in petroleum and natural gas processing, fine chemical processing, various adsorption and separation tasks, and other uses (Carvalho & Urquieta- Gonzalez, 2015; Teh, Triwahyono, Jalil, Mukti, Aziz, & Shishido, 2015)."

"Shore Gold Inc. (Shore) is presently designing a diamond processing plant for the Star and the Orion South kimberlite deposits in the Fort à la Corne (FalC) area in central Saskatchewan. The first step in the plant is diamond liberation and occurs in the comminution section. Diamond liberation is the process of breaking up the kimberlite rock, as gently as possible so as not to damage the diamonds.Autogenous grinding mills (AG mills) use a combination of impact crushing, abrasion and attrition to break up the kimberlite. The forces that occur during the actions of abrasion and attrition cause the kimberlites to break up preferentially along lines of weaknesses which offers a “diamond friendly” method of comminution.Hard competent kimberlite is commonly found in the diatreme zone as well as the root zone of the volcanic pipe and is the source of kimberlite for most of the Southern African diamond mines. Softer kimberlite is typically found in and around the crater area of a volcanic pipe and it is this kimberlite that makes up the majority of kimberlite for both the Star and Orion South deposits. These softer kimberlites can be readily broken up using abrasion and attrition imparted by AG mills. In order for Shore to benefit from the softer kimberlite found in the Star - Orion South diamond project, two large (10.97 m diameter x 7.10 m long) AG mills were designed for the comminution section based on extensive test work and simulations by Metso Minerals (Metso)."

"One of the disadvantages of the federal government's idea of ""taxation by consultation"" is that it seems to take longer to enact new legislation. The proposed new rules for taxing automobile benefits is one example. Here is a ball which has been batted around between government and the public several times and still has not come down to earth. Fasten your seatbelts, there may be more to come. IntroductionThe draft legislation released on April 13 contains the details of the government's current proposals on car expenses and benefits. They differ significantly from the last announced position. Finance Minister Wilson has indicated that the release in draft form will provide an opportunity for the Commons Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs (the Blenkarn committee) and other interested persons to comment before the legislation is introduced in Parliament. Accordingly, there may yet be revisions.Notwithstanding the prospect of further changes, the proposed rules generally come into force in 1988. While taxpayers may welcome some of these changes, particularly the increase in the tax-exempt allowance, many must be frustrated that, at this late date, the rules for the current taxation year are not yet finalized."

An underground mine fire can seriously threaten the lives of all personnel in the mine. This fact makes fire emergency planning a high priority in the mining industry. A fire emergency plan includes a means of warning miners of the existence of a fire, and the need to evacuate or retreat to a place of refuge. The warning alarm must be fast and must reach all miners, regardless of their location or work activity. Means of fire warning are varied, and include such methods as stench, flashing lights, telephones, and word-of-mouth (messengers). Unfortunately, none of these methods are entirely satisfactory. Stench can be slow and seldom achieves total mine coverage, especially in high-back room-and-pillar mines with low ventilation velocity. Telephones are effective only where personnel are close enough to hear the phone ring. A novel fire warning alarm system has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines which enables instantaneous warning of all underground personnel. The warning alarm is sent by an electromagnetic signal which penetrates through mine rock from a transmitter to small person-wearable receivers. Each miner's cap lamp battery could be equipped with a small receiver and when a fire or other emergency occurs the miner could be alerted to the danger by a blinking of the cap lamp. Testing of prototype equipment has demonstrated that the transmitted signal is capable of penetrating through over a mile of mine rock and activating the receiver. This paper describes the theoretical basis for through-the-rock ultra-low frequency electromagnetic transmission, design of the prototype transmitter and receiver, test results, and status of commercial development of systems utilizing this technology.

"The industrial processing of ores containing gold and/or platinum minerals is generally mining site specific, e.g. McQuiston and Shoemaker (1985). The variety of various mineral processing techniques employed is extensive and includes size classification, gravity concentration, amalgamation, roasting, cyanidation, chemical leaching, ion ex-change/solvent extraction and froth flotation. Because of the relatively small quantities of Au and Pt that exist in the earth’ s crust, the economical recovery of Pt and Au often requires that the Au and Pt be associated with other industrially important minerals. This association of Au and Pt with other minerals can occur in very complicated mineralogical forms. It is probably safe to say that Au and Pt mineral concentration from natural ores represents some of the most complex metallurgical challenges facing the mining industry.Froth flotation is a technique that is receiving increasing industrial attention for the treatment of finely disseminated and/or associated Au and Pt minerals. The high throughput at relatively low capital cost, the potentially high selectivity, and the existence of a well-established technology for treating more abundant associated minerals such as base metal sulfides makes froth flotation an attractive processing alternative. Broadly speaking, the industrial oriented froth flotation experience with Au and Pt minerals exists in two major categories: 1) the flotation of Au and Pt associated with pyrite (or pyrrhotite) and 2) the flotation of Au and Pt associated with primarily Cu, Zn, or Cu/Pb/Zn containing sulfide ores.In the case of the precious metal association with pyrite (or pyrrhotite), much of the published froth flotation experience comes from South Africa. Typically, such processes are done using an acid side flotation with a collector such as mercaptobenzothiazole. The approach obviously is to float pyrite and hence recover associated gold. Generally the higher the total sulfur recovery the higher the gold recovery. Similar experiences of Pt associated with pyrite are a lot less common mineralogically and hence less well documented industrially. For example, in Canada, Pt is often associated with pyrrhotite but is not really processed as a straight pyrrhotite recovery.For the situation of Au and/or Pt associated with other base metal sulfide minerals, the industrial experience base is quite varied and is well documented from both North and South American operations. The nature of most of these flotation processes is to design, operate, and optimize the installed concentrator to get the Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, etc. that is the bulk of the valuable sulfide ore and then take whatever precious metal recovery comes. Typically, such flotations are on the basic side using standard thiol collectors such as xanthates, dithiophosphates, thionocarbamates, etc. It is very common with such ores to use mixtures of collectors in order to get ""everything"". Often in such plants, there is an inherent balancing act occuring so as to operate in such a manner to reject pyrite (and pyrrhotite) in order to maintain high base metal mineral concentrate grades and yet recover sufficient precious metals such as Au and Pt minerals which often are associated with the iron sulfides being rejected. Obviously in such an environment, the smelter operation often ends up telling the concentrator what the precious metal recovery actually was in a given production period."

As part of the Goldcorp Inc growth plan Minera Peñasquito SA de CV has developed its polymetallic deposit with a large “state of the art” concentrator to process lead and zinc ores. The plant consists of two grinding lines including 38ft diameter SAG mills and 24ft diameter ball mills. During mid to late 2009 concentrator commissioning activities commenced. First concentrates were produced in October 2009 and now the plant is meeting its design basis of 65,000 mtpd per line. This paper describes the design and operational experience to date for its grinding circuit design, together with the recently commissioned HPGR crushing circuit.

"As explosives become more widely used in urban and other congested areas, governmental regulations pertaining to their use are becoming more pervasive and stringent. This is forcing the blasting industry to review its entire spectrum of operations. Greater attention is now being paid not only to the design and layout of blasts, but also to the monitoring and recording of their after-effects for both legal and business reasons.Current PracticesThe major users of explosives in urban areas are quarry operators and construction companies. A characteristic of both of these industries, at least in recent years, is a relatively low margin of profit. This, coupled with the fact that their use of explosives is relatively intermittent, prevents them from having the kind of professional consulting services that blasting operations really warrant in today's regulatory environment. When such services are obtained, they tend to be directed more at the design and execution of the blast than at the recordkeeping function. The records that are kept tend to be more in the form of a summary of the consultant's design data as opposed to the kind of after-effect detail that is necessary.The more experienced consultants and operators now realize that at least as much attention must be paid to the record-keeping as to the design work. Regulatory bodies at all levels of government are insisting on the availability of such records.Unfortunately, the instrumentation in use today for taking such measurements does not lend itself to the practice of intermittent consulting. Current monitoring and recording instruments are based on so-called analog technology of the type that has traditionally been applied to the monitoring of earthquakes. They require set-up and calibration procedures which must be repeated each time the instrument is moved, or the blasting parameters are changed, as well as complex total analysis of the recorded data. This can lend to confusion and a dilution of responsibility for anything other than the design work and possibly some summary reporting."

"The High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) plant for nickel-cobalt mixed sulphide production at Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) in the Philippines has been in operation since 2005 with a capacity of 10,000 t/year of nickel. Subsequent to the commissioning of the second plant in 2008, the production capacity increased to 22,000 t/year of nickel (Llerin et al., 2011). CBNC’s annual nickel production reached more than 24,000 tons of nickel in 2014. The concepts to achieve this capacity are the high availability and the reciprocally flexible operation of both plants. The availability depends on some factors, such as the control of impurities in the process and the equipment condition, to mention a few. In the HPAL process, it is not only the autoclave operating conditions that affect nickel extraction but also the impurities in the ore greatly influence it. The major element in the ore is iron and most of this iron is precipitated as Fe2O3, while the rest remains as Fe2+ or Fe3+ sulphate in solution. These ions in solution reduce the availability, so it is important to control the formation of iron ions by controlling the impurities in feed ore as well as the HPAL conditions. This paper presents the general HPAL process and the behaviour of impurities, focusing on iron behaviour in the HPAL process.INTRODUCTIONCoral Bay Nickel Corporation ProfileCoral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) was founded on April 2002, as a joint venture of four companies; namely, Mitsui Corporation (18%), Sojitz Corporation (18%), Nickel Asia Corporation (10%) and Sumitomo Metal Mining Corporation (SMM) with a controlling stake of 54%. Aside from its capital share, Nickel Asia Corporation also supplies the ore and limestone for the High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) plant located in Rio Tuba, Philippines, as shown in Figure 1 (Tsuchida, 2008). The objective of the CBNC project is to produce 22,000 t/year (original design) of nickel and 1,500 t/year of cobalt, as sulphide, by the treatment of nickel laterite ore which is a low grade nickel oxide ore in the Philippines (Mines and Geosciences Bureau, 2014). The sulphide product has been exported as a raw material to the SMM Nickel Refinery in Japan for 30 years. The product of this plant, a mixed (Ni/Co) sulphide, is shipped to the SMM’s Nickel Refinery in Niihama, Japan. SMM Corporation provides the technology and management personnel to the plant. SMM Corporation also supplies the sulphuric acid, which is the main reagent for the HPAL process."

Realizing the potential of cutting greenhouse gases (GHGs) associated with mining, a variety of approaches has been proposed for their mitigation. The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has been a key mechanism to assist in implementation of mitigation measures. The objectives of CDM are not only to assist Annex I countries in meeting their GHG emissions reduction targets with cost-effective reduction but also to achieve sustainable development in non-Annex I countries. However, apart from China, India, Brazil and Mexico, many developing countries are still in the stages of formulation or realizing CDM strategies. Projects associated with methane capture and flaring are the fourth most prevalent type of CDM project internationally. This research primarily has addressed emissions abatement and sustainable development aims and effectiveness of registered CDM projects associated with coal mining in China. The paper reviews 30 currently registered CDM projects in China on the UNFCCC database and six other non- Chinese projects. Systematic evaluation involving content analysis of documentary evidence regarding coal mining CDM projects is presented in relation to firstly, quantitative reduction of GHG emissions and secondly, sustainable development outcomes. The projects have been assessed via a set sustainability criteria. Overall it was found that sustainable development goals are only briefly referred to in Project Design Documents, Letter of Approvals and validation documents. Varying types of sustainability initiatives have been implemented with weak to strong indications of effectiveness. This has implications for the future effectiveness of CDM projects in the mining sector, the proposed new market mechanism under UNFCCC, and for assessment of projects under mechanisms established outside the UNFCCC.

Slurry flow, including flow through the charge, through the discharge grates, along the pulp lifters and its discharge from the mill is an important contributor to the efficiency of the grinding process within a SAG mill. Poor transport of finer ground material can adversely affect grinding leading to excess energy consumption and over-grinding of fine material. This paper extends a 1-way coupled DEM-SPH method to three dimensions and applies it to a 1.8 m diameter by 0.6 m long AG/SAG pilot mill. This provides detailed information on the internal flow of slurry within a SAG mill, including the prediction of dry regions and of slurry pooling. Full 3D analysis also allows the pulp flow patterns into and out of the mill via pulp lifter chamber to be investigated.

The company also produces and sells copper concentrate, copper sulphate, copper arsenate, sodium antirnonate, silver, gold, cadmium, bismuth, indium, and germanium dioxide and a range of fertilizers and sulphur products.Zinc OperationsRoastingThe roasters currently treat about 1400 t/d of zinc concentrates. Over half of the total concentrate treated originates from the Red Dog Mine in Alaska. During the summer, concentrate is shipped from Alaska to Vancouver where it is loaded into rail cars and hauled inland, transferred to trucks and delivered to Trail. The remainder of the roaster feed is made up of Sullivan concentrate and various custom concentrates. These arrive either by train or by truck.There are three roasters available for roasting the concentrate. The two major roasters are Lurgi fluid bed units. Each Lurgi roaster can process concentrate at about 1:7 tonnes per hour (tlb). A smaller Cominco suspension roaster with a capacity of 10 tlb is also used. The flowsheet for the high temperature section of the fluid bed circuit is shown in Figure 1.Concentrates fed to fluid bed roasting are conditioned with 7 1/min water to give 8% moisture in feed. Two slinger belts throw the mixture into the fluidized bed. The fluid bed roasters are 10.4 m in diameter with a bed depth of 1 m. Grate area is 84 m2• Normal operating conditions include bed temperatures of 930°C to 950°C, fluidizing air at 750 Nm3/min and a wind box pressure of 2000 mm H2O."
