The Australian Government?s Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program launched in 2006 obliges companies that use more than 0.5 PJ (petajoule) or roughly 139 GWh (gigawatt hour) per year to conduct an energy assessment in order to identify measures to improve energy efficiency. The opportunities identified by the mining sector were assembled in the Mining Significant Opportunities Register that permitted companies not yet embracing and adopting an energy management program to see what those who are, were doing and how much energy was saved, and helps disseminate best practice. The measures can be filtered by company, year, category or equipment type. The creation of a central repository of energy efficiency initiatives is valuable but this existing database could be improved; fields identifying the energy and carbon emission savings associated with a given initiative are a surprising omission. Consequently it does not permit the relative effectiveness of different measures for energy and carbon reductions to be readily assessed. A review of energy management efforts implemented in the mining industry, published in peer reviewed journals, corporate sustainability reports or industry publications during the last 40 years has revealed many examples of best practice. However, the lack of a standardized reporting framework in any of these sources has made it difficult to assess the effectiveness and compare the adopted energy management measures ? just as is the case with the Australian register. In an attempt to address these issues, an improved database structure has been created for energy management measures from the mining industry which identifies energy and financial savings arising from energy management initiatives, classifies applications to specific processes or equipment, and recognizes leaders in the mining industry with respect to energy management. The structure of the register includes the key data relevant to energy management in mining that is absent in the Australian version. The mining industry energy management database has been made available in the public domain where stakeholders can examine the best practice examples. Mining energy champions may also contribute to the register by providing case studies; a standardized entry template affords a quality assurance dimension that is absent in other reporting initiatives. Adoption of this database with its standardized reporting mechanism will enhance transparency of the mining industry in energy matters and help it maintain its social license to operate.

This paper demonstrates experimental studies on bioprocessing of different waste streams. In Part I of this paper three tailings from mining industry were bioleached with mixed acidophilic culture in order to solubilize valuable metals, like copper, nickel, zinc and manganese to leaching liquor. Bioleaching resulted in > 70 %, > 85 %, 100 % and > 70 % leaching yields for Cu, Ni, Zn and Mn, respectively. However, contaminants like arsenic and chromium were not leached efficiently and they will cause challenges in residual solids and sometimes also in metal recovery from leaching liquor. Bioleaching resulted in 99 % leaching yield for copper. Part II demonstrates mine water treatment and also gold recovery from process liquids with biosorption method. The novelty of biosorption was finding that certain fungal species were able to be cultivated to self-immobilized systems, which are easier to operate than traditional suspended biomass methods. Biosorption resulted in more than 90 % removal for all contaminants, but was also seen to be gold selective.

Supported gold catalysts were prepared by Direct Anionic Exchange on an alumina support and tested during the reaction of CO oxidation and of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons (C1 to C3). The catalysts showed high activies over a range of concentrations and temperatures compatible with an application to automotive exhaust cleaning. Furthermore, a complete resistance to thermal ageing at 600°C in the absence or presence of water was observed due to the obtention of strongly anchored nanosized gold particles during the preparation step.

Many gold deposits also contain significant quantities of deleterious elements such as arsenic. Several biological pathways are possible for arsenic exposure; special care and caution must be used while undertaking metallurgical testwork on ores and concentrates that contain high levels of arsenic. Abstract - A simple linear model for interpreting duplicate analytical data for a range of values is described. The conceptual model can be quantified using a reduced major axis model rather than the inappropriate traditional least squares approach. The reduced major axis parameters (slope, intercept) and associated errors provide a quantitative basis for: (1) defining bias, and (2) comparing results within laboratories, between laboratories and between sampling/analytical methods. Application of the linear model must be preceded by extraction of obvious outliers or small groups of values that have an inordinately large impact on values of the statistical parameters defining the model. In addition, consideration must be directed to the presence of more than one population of sampling error, as in the case of multiple styles of mineralization being sampled.

Design and validation of an integrated guidance system for articulated ground vehicles is investigated. The development of an autonomous industrial vehicle must take into the account the specific geometry of these vehicles; they can be composed of a tractor with 1 or 2 trailers or of articulated type like LHD. Moreover the tractor-trailers type vehicles can have on-axle hitch configuration or positive/negative off axle configuration. The path-tracking of a tractor-trailer vehicle in restricted space is presented and discussed in this paper. Recent results obtained in simulation and validated by experimentation are also presented. These studies can lead to better ways of maneuvering an articulated vehicle in a restricted space or automatically executing of docking and parking maneuvers

In an effort to better understand and manage the growth of this expenditure a significant supply chain management program was implemented. This was complemented by a series of technical initiatives focussed on grinding media specifications, quality management and the prediction of grinding media wear rate as a function of physical ore characteristics. This paper discusses the methodology and outcomes of these activities.

The paper describes and discusses the use of stainless steels for leaching plants emphasising the duplex family, i.e., austenitic-ferritic stainless steels. This group has generally twice the proof strength of the more common 300-series austenitic grades, which implies possibilities to reduce the gauge at construction of pressure vessels and atmospheric tanks and vessels and thereby possibilities to reduce the weight. The duplex grades have also higher surface hardness resulting in better resistance to mechanical wear, i.e., abrasion and erosion corrosion. The lower contents of nickel and molybdenum imply lower cost and a more stable price considering the present market situation for these alloying elements. Abstract - Traditional mine planning based on block models built with interpolation techniques such as kriging does not take into account the uncertainty associated with the estimates. These models are inadequate for short-range mine planning. In contrast, conditionally simulated models reproduce the actual variability (histogram) and spatial continuity (variogram) of the attributes of interest. Conditional simulation can be used to address the problem of measuring the uncertainty associated with an estimate. This paper outlines how the sequential Gaussian conditional simulation algorithm can be used to assess uncertainty of grade estimates and also illustrates how simulated models can be incorporated into mine planning and scheduling. A case study demonstrates the efficiency of the method in assessing risk associated with geological and engineering variables.
